Crow Hawking

Alec May

The joys of training and flying a Crow Falcon

This was a first for me, I had flown hawks before be it Harris or Redtail but I had only dreamed of flying a longwing. Eight years prior to flying my first longwing I spent a couple of seasons with the Hunter brothers, John and Neil. They where flying pursuit hawks and gamehawks at the time and looking back now, they where doing a pretty good job of it. This came to a break period for me, as my wife fell pregnant with twin girls. We moved house for help with family and the harris and redtail followed with 2 gwp dogs left for new homes not sold but re homed. I knew then it would only be a break and I would be back flying bops again in the future, when the kids started school and I knew I had enough time to do a crow falcon justice. The passion started again, but worse than before, every book or web site I could find was read until my mind was filled with a plan to train a Rook Hawk. I settled for the Nick Fox way of training a Rook Hawk and thought if it alll goes wrong I can blame him! - LOL. The only part that I didn’t do was to feed through the hood for obvious reasons (although i have trained a gamehawk in this manner since then with good effect) anyway on the 25/07/09, I went to collect my new charge a female Pere x Saker from

www.ukfalconryforum.com

Martin Jones in Wales. I did a 7hr journey (plus another 1 hour or so tracking and recovering a wayward black Gyr x Saker with Neil Davies - an eventful day!) The next morning, I collected ‘Millie” from Martin Jones and headed back home to the Borders. She was a dream to train, full marks to Nick Fox and Neil Davies for being at the end of the phone. ‘Millie’ arrived fat at 2.41/4 enterd at 1.131/4 and finished of her 3 month season at just over 2lbs with 45 head under her belt.

Slip 2 was at about 50 plus. They were a good bit out and she went along the ground real low she was undetected up to the point of about 60 yards and they were all up she got up with them and they went for cover the last I saw her was over some trees I got the telem out and it pointed to a field and guess what the field had 30 plus bullocks all standing in a circle. I got in the field she had nailed a adult crow and wasn’t for giving it up even with the cattle round her. I picked her up on her crow and let her sit on it in the van. I fed her up on it in the safety of the garden.

She was a steady fit and confident falcon, who always made me look good, never a high flyer, but always worked out her path before she left the fist, stealth was her key. Below are some examples of crow hawking day in the Scottish Borders with ‘Millie’ my first rook hawk: Millie’ was at 1.141/8 today. Real windy here. I slipped her at what I thought was 15 plus mixed and all hell broke loose there must have been 500 plus mixed in the sky. She was in about them no fear. I lost sight of her there was to much going on. I saw them diving at a field full of bullocks ,headed over and she was on a rook with 20 big noses nudging her. I picked her up and hooded her and took the rook just in case.

Rescued Female Harris Hawk

Maya before her moult

It was the morning of 3rd of May 2010, I got a call from the RSPCA asking if I was able to take on a hawk, I said I would so went to the local centre and saw ‘Maya’, for the first time. She was sat in a cardboard box and she looked a right mess. The Officer who called me explained how they had received a call from a woman complaining about her neighbour keeping a large bird in a rabbit hutch, when they called to the property they found ‘Maya’. The day after collection I did mute samples and found she had worms but other than that was fine and healthy so wormed her and gave her a good check over to see the extent of feather damage etc and was promptly bitten by her (and not for the last time). So a couple of days later she was put away in an aviary to settle down for the summer and a well deserved moult. Through the summer went to visit ‘Maya’ as often as possible in her aviary, most of the time she was calm and approachable but, others was cowering in the corner almost shaking with fear. So decided to leave her well alone from that point until she had finished the moult.

www.ukfalconryforum.com

‘Maya’ was finally pulled from her moult on 1st November and she had a slight attitude problem initially which after the problems she’d had was pretty much expected. It was obvious she had thickened out a fair bit during the moult and she looked stunning, after a couple of days of handling and some light creance work I upped her work rate a bit, starting some rope training to get her as fit as possible due to her late start to the season. She was now getting fit fairly quickly and her weight had settled at around 1lb 13oz but still plenty of room on her so it was time to start hunting in earnest. Through the early stages of training ‘Maya’ had a massive problem with bare hands being anywhere near her and would bite hard and on more than a few occasions drew blood, but I kept at it and eventually this started to slow down. To this day, she will still occasionally bite my hand, but not so hard, I think it’s just a reminder that she will only be touched when SHE wants! The one thing she has never done and that’s foot or grip me. Thankfully!

Maya on rabbit

Just over 3 weeks had passed from ‘Maya’ leaving the aviary to her getting entered on a Jackdaw, a couple of days later a moorhen, then a cock pheasant! Things were going well with some cracking flights most days and ‘Maya’s’ fitness and determination growing by the day. Finally a few days later her first bunny… now we were cooking. Hunting ‘Maya’ became very addictive as she was pretty much a point and shoot hunter taking on most stuff even at silly ranges, on a few occasions some of the slips I would have been over the moon with a female Goshawk taking on and being successful let alone a female Harris. One flight I will remember was when she took her hare, we were heading out to be on the fields just after dark and left the house with about 20 -30 minutes of daylight left , just as we got to the first of the fields I am allowed to hunt on I spotted a hare squatting about 30m out in a field and thought why not, ‘Maya’ had chased and connected with 2 hares previously but didn’t hold, but since then had become adept at stopping bunnies with a good head bind. The hare spotted her coming and set off with ‘Maya’ closing it down quickly but missed on the first attempt, she spun up and over

8

THE CHASE

and back in pursuit, her second attempt she narrowly missed again this time turning the hare towards us, this time she swung out wide and came in very low to the ground, just as the hare tried to jink her she hammered it one foot on the neck the other between the ears, the hare leapt but landed perfectly with ‘Maya’ fully in control. I sprinted in to help her but needn’t have worried when I got there she had the hare perfectly balled up. Just as I opened the hare the final bit of sunlight dipped and I need to switch on the lap to let her feed up. Over the next couple of months ‘Maya’ had taken a good selection of prey including Hare, Pheasant, Rabbits, Crow, Rook, Herring Gull, Black Headed Gull, Common Gull, Moorhen, Woodcock and a Mouse! There were a couple of others that’s she mugged that didn’t make the list. On the night of 2nd January, I switched ‘Maya’ over too lamping and by God she proved to be a bit of a demon on the lamp. The first night out I gave her 2 calls on the lamp of about 30m or so then set off in search of a bunny and a short time later her first was in the bag, for some reason I wanted to carry on and glad I

did she had her 2nd of the night and then I gave her a good feed up, by now her hunting weight had gone up from 1lb 13oz to around 2lb, after this first night out on the lamp she weighed in at 2lb 10oz with her crop, so the next night was a rest night. ‘Maya’ ended the season at a best hunting weight of 2lb 2oz, but was killing well at around 2lb 4oz during the really cold spell around Christmas. From that night till now ‘Maya’ has taken 92 bunnies on the lamp and her totals for the season are: 5 Pheasants 2 Partridge 100 Bunnies 1 Woodcock 1 Hare 2 Herring Gulls 6 Common Gulls 2 Black Headed Gulls 2 Rooks 6 Crows 1 Jackdaw 1 Moorhen 1 Mouse TOTAL: 131 Kills and 14 mercy kills on myxy rabbits

TLC-40 Eco for better brooding of exotic birds. Altricial species of birds (including all parrots and birds of prey) are blind and helpless when they hatch and it is some weeks before they are able to move around, control their body temperature and feed themselves. During this period the young birds need to be kept in a clean, temperature controlled environment. As they grow and develop down and feathers they can gradually tolerate lower temperatures and the breeder needs to be able to reduce the chamber temperature easily, whilst still maintaining control. Young birds also benefit from being able to see humans from within the chamber; during this early stage in their development it is essential for young birds to become familiar with the presence of people if they are to be tame in adulthood. The new Octagon TLC-40 Eco brooder fulfils all these functions very cost effectively and can also double as a Hospital Cage for sick or injured birds. The Eco provides digital control and read-out of temperature whereas the TLC-40 Advance also shows humidity,

The United Kingdom Falconers Club (UKFC) and Jemima Parry-Jones MBE are proud to announce the launch of The UK Falconry & Hawking Event taking place on the 3rd and 4th of September 2011 at the International Centre for Bird of Prey in Newent, Gloucestershire. Because we feel so enthusiastic about our sport and because we know you also feel so passionately about falconry’s future, we have devised a new falconry event from the grass roots up. The UK Falconry & Hawking Event 2011 will cater specifically for falconers and their families. We have arranged top quality flying displays, a UK and International Club Marquee, Artist Marquee, Demonstrations and Seminars, Trade Stands and a Food Court. Running alongside the Event, we will be running an International Hood Making Competition kindly sponsored by American Hoods and Falconry Bells. There will also be camping on-site, BBQ and evening entertainment provided for standholders and exhibitors. We believe that a new falconry event held at such a historic and well known venue will be beneficial to all falconry clubs both in the UK and internationally, Raptor Breeders and Falconers alike. Also, holding this new event in September will make it easier for everyone to attend and meet club members prior to the new hunting season. We hope that you will be able to attend The UK Falconry & Hawking Event and if you have any questions, please contact: The UK Falconry & Hawking Event Event Organisers Office Rosslyn, Burgage Wellington Somerset TA21 8NB Tel: +44 (0) 1823 666 176 Email: info@falconryhawking.co.uk Web: www.falconryhawking.co.uk

GEOFFREY DASHWOOD contemporary bird and wildlife sculptor

Geoffrey Dashwood was born in Hampshire, England in 1947. At the age of fifteen he won a scholarship to study fine art at the Southampton College of Art, but left after a brief period preferring to study directly from nature. He worked in many varied occupations experimenting in various mediums and exploring techniques in his spare time. His last employment was with the Forestry Commission when he was engaged as a keeper in the New Forest. However, he also became the unofficial artist in residence for his employers. He left in his mid twenties to pursue a freelance career and received commissions from various patrons for illustrations and design work, concurrently drawing and painting independently. In the 1980s, Dashwood discovered a gift and passion for sculpture. His earliest works were small, highly realistic studies in the mainstream of traditional English

wildlife art and comparable in style to the famous 19th century French Animalier School of Sculpture. Although these early works brought him commercial success, he soon became increasingly dissatisfied with the constraints of realism and the lack of personal expression the genre afforded him. Dashwood started to experiment with larger life-size and monumental works and began to eliminate all superfluous details, creating boldly modelled pieces, and attaining refined tactile sculptures in smooth, pure forms, further enhanced in bronze by the application of coloured and multi-coloured patinas. In these sculptures he combined his own aesthetic ideals, establishing a distinctive style, which is now internationally recognised as being quintessentially Dashwood. His affinity for and empathy with birds and his ability to express these emotions to others through his sculpture is undisputed. His work is exhibited and collected worldwide.

Latest News from

The UK Falconry Club We have taken on some very big mountains this last few months, getting Hawk Board affiliated was something that I thought after a couple of years, we would achieve, only to be registering with them now, again this will help us have a say within the falconry world. The Event is something that has been a mammoth task , but is almost completely done and I hope will be a annual fair for the falconry community to build on.

President’s Message ben_crane@ukfalconryforum.com To describe what UKFC and its members have achieved requires one word: PHENOMENAL! In just over 12 months the club has increased membership, been present at UK Game Fairs, represented British Falconry in Austria, had invites and affiliation to clubs in Croatia and the USA (Trapping available this Christmas to all). Launched, what is arguably the best club magazine in the World and arranging a brand new Falconry Event for the whole of the UK. However, on top of all this activity, the two most important crowning glories have been the regular, high quality field meets and the invitation and membership to the Hawk Board (Well done to Charlie & Lee for a great race in the nominations). A club is as only as strong as its members and its committee. This club is therefore a testament to the strength of UK Falconry at this moment in time. Well done all UKFC members. Ben Crane, UKFC President

Chairman’s Update

The internet is the future, falconry must make use of it and use it in the correct way in which falconry should be exposed to the outside world, this must be done with the same care and thought that goes into noninternet falconry publicity. I think you can all praise yourselves in helping achieving this. The future looks bright for the club and long may it continue to grow and prosper. Lee Featherstone - Chair

Membership News jan_hart@ukfalconryforum.com On the 23rd March 2011 it will be 12 months since the first members joined the UK’s first internet-based falconry club. Happy Birthday to the UKFC! Numbers have swelled to 50 members whose benefits include access to the Club’s section on the UK Falconry Forum invitation to a number of field meets held throughout the UK, Public Liability Insurance, field meets, club BBQ’s, plus other social events. If you are not already a member you can apply to join the UKFC by completing the application form: http://www. ukfalconryforum.com/misc.php?do=fid=1 and paying the relevant membership fee via the buttons on the forum’s home page: http://www.ukfalconryforum.com/content.php Finally, a remainder to our current members that your membership will need to be renewed by 31st May 2011.

lee_featherstone@ukfalconryforum.com

I will be in touch with you all soon!

Well firstly, I am honoured to be in a position to report on the newest & fastest growing club in the country right now... to think that 12 months ago this was just an idea I had. Personally, I would like to thank Kevin Massey for his help and guidance in getting things rolling (Thanks Kev).

Jan Hart - Membership Secretary

I would also like to thank all of the committee for all their hard work and commitment to making this club work. It is very much appreciated by myself and I am sure by the members themselves.

Financial News tommy_miles@ukfalconryforum.com Hi everyone, as the Treasurer I can confirm despite having heavy promotional commitments the club has come through its first year in the Black. We will of course be committing to further expenditure over the coming months, but I am confident with the controls in place

the club funds will remain in a healthy state. I have enjoyed the job of Treasurer and I am very proud of what the committee have achieved in the last year and also grateful for the support of all our members both financial and moral. We will be committing to Hawk Board membership soon and I would like to thank Lee featherstone for his generous gift of the membership fees for all us members in the first year. Tommy Miles, Treasurer

Club News steve_lambert@ukfalconryforum.com As the club approaches its first birthday and I reflect over the previous twelve months, a couple of highlights stand out; firstly the club’s first Falconry Fair, a true representation of team spirit, everyone pulling together to make sure the club hit the fair ‘running’. It was truly amazing for such a young club. The display was great and the UKFC made itself known, it even managed to give a hefty donation to the Campaign of Falconry out of the proceeds taken from the club’s raffle and sales of the first ever printed version of the excellent on-line club magazine ‘The Chase’. Clubs are all about field meets for me, and as an eager Austringer I would have liked to have seen more, (with more members on them too) but I have enjoyed the meetings I have attended with my Goshawk with excellent sport and even better company. It’s great to see so many ideas and suggestions along with offers of support coming from members of the club. Having been involved in committees for awhile it does make a welcome and refreshing change. An active core of club members makes a club very strong. The club will be holding its first AGM later this year, so it is hoped that all members will support the club and attend, your thoughts and opinions are welcomed. Elections will take place for committee positions and votes will be taken on important changes so your attendance will be truly appreciated. The meeting will coincide with the club’s first ever three day field meeting. This will be a huge undertaking for the club and again everyone’s support is appreciated and required in making the field meet a success. More on this will, but for now just enjoy the summer and I will see you in the field next season. Steve Lambert - Club Secretary
