Reizen is geen vrijetijdsbesteding. Reizen is een manier van leven. Voor mij is het reizen op paden die hart hebben het belangrijkste. Zo reis ik, en de enige zinvolle uitdaging is om die in haar volheid te volbrengen. Zo reis ik, kijken, kijken, ademloos kijken.
Travelling is no hobby, travelling is a way of life. For me there is only the traveling on paths that have heart. Thats the most important. There I travel, and the only worthwhile challenge is to traverse its full length. And there I travel, looking, looking, breathlessly.

Bij elke oversteek check je het weer vooraf, maar wat je krijgt is wat je krijgt. Voor de meesten van ons, is het begrip van de zee op basis van ervaringen op het strand, in de havens, op de boot of gedurende het zeilen in kustwateren. Overal, behalve op de eilanden ver weg in de oceanen, werd mij gevraagd, als ik weer eens een oceaan overstak, of ik langs de kust ging. In elk van deze gevallen denkt men dat dat relatief veiliger is met het land nooit meer dan een paar uur weg. Maar als ik dan aan de grote stormen denk, die ik uiteraard heb meegemaakt, dan was ik altijd blij dat deze ver van de kust af waren, daar waar ruimte is. Niets kan vergeleken worden met wat er psychisch met je gebeurt als een zeeman echt in het grote, hoge, wilde blauw daarginds tuurt. Huilende geluiden rond de masten, groen, koud water dat over het dek davert en hard water dat soms zo hard tegen de romp slaat dat het voor een ogenblik lijkt dat de tijd ophoudt te bestaan. En dat dagen achter elkaar. Binnen een kwinkslag van de tijd kan een hevige storm het scheepje versplinteren en kan het gebeurd zijn en verdrink je in de duisternis beneden je. Dan bidt elke zeeman het bekende Bretonse gebed: Gedenk mij, Uw zee is zo groot en mijn schip is zo klein.

At each crossing you check the weather before, but what you get is what you get. For most of us, the notion of the sea is on the basis of experiences on the beach, in the ports, on the boat or while navigating along coastal waters. Everywhere, except on far offlaying islands, people asked me, before I crossed an ocean again, if I was following the coast. In each of these cases, it is thought that, if the land is never more than a few hours away, it is relatively safer. But when I think of the great storms, I’ve been through, I was always pleased that these were far from the coast, where there is room. Nothing can be compared to what happens to you psychologically if a sailor really peers into the big, wild, blue yonder. Howling noises around the masts, green cold water on the decks and bouncing water sometimes so hard against the hull that for a moment it seems that time ceases to exist. Day after day. A violent storm can shatter a boat, within a twist of time, in pieces and in no time the boat can sink in the darkness beneath you. That’s the time of praying the wellknown Breton prayer: Think of me, Your sea is so large and my boat is so small.
