Why the Parthenon? Welcome to the Parthenon, the Interfraternity Council’s semesterly newsletter! This newsletter was born out of a need to communicate our council’s news, updates, and happenings with students, alumni, parents, and many other supporters of the Greek Community at the University of Georgia. You’ve probably asked yourself “why call a newsletter the Parthenon?” The real reason for naming the newsletter such is that, like the real Parthenon which was constructed in 432 BC and still stands today, the Fraternity System has stood the test of time at the University of Georgia. With over 145 years of tradition, the legacy of fraternity men at this university is undeniable and has shaped the institution into one of the premier land-grant universities in the nation. It is our goal to continue the legacy of excellence and naming the newsletter “The Parthenon” was a way to remind the Greek Community to stand solid through difficulties and to hold steadfast to our core values The Parthenon is a temple constructed in Athens, Greece , built to honor the Greek goddess Athena. In 1975, the Greek government began reconstructing the Parthenon. which have allowed us to succeed. I am proud to say that we’ve had a great summer, and have already been extremely busy this semester. I am very grateful to be working with such outstanding student leaders and I look forward to you reading about their accomplishments in the pages to come. Interfraternally, Michael Pisciotta

RECOGNITION IFC Chapters Receive National Awards

Fraternity Alumni Recognized as “40 under Forty”

UGA IFC Wins SEIFC Awards

Sigma Chi’s Andrew Heffernan won the Balfour Award, presented to the most outstanding senior nationally for the 2010-2011 school year. The award goes to a senior who exemplifies service and scholarship during his last year in college.

Tau Kappa Epsilon after their re-chartering ceremony

Tau Kappa Epsilon Re-Chartered on July 23rd, 2011 at the University of Georgia. This past summer TKE won the following awards: Excellence in Alumni Relations based on alumni events hosted, alumni involvement, and our current actions in establishing a formal alumni association, Excellence in Extracurricular Activities more than 80% of members involved in other organizations on campus, The Chalice of Apollo - given as a challenge to the most recently chartered chapter, and President Grayson Jacobs was awarded the Kenneth L. Duke, Sr., Memorial Scholarship 2011- for outstanding service to the fraternity, community, and academic achievements. Phi Kappa Theta received an Honorable Mention for Alumni Relations this past summer at their National Convention. Alpha Gamma Rho was recognized as a Gold Chapter and won the following awards this summer: Highest Honor in Scholarship, Highest Honor for Membership Development, High Honor for Promise & Values, High Honor for Best Single Newsletter Issue, & Advisor Dean Pringle was recognized for 15 Years of Service. Alpha Epsilon Pi’s Blake Helfman was presented the Outstanding Master Award for the 2010-2011 school year. The award is presented to the top President out of all of the fraternity’s chapters.

Alpha Tau Omega received the True Merit Award for the fourth consecutive year at their National Awards banquet in Indianapolis. They were also recognized for excellence in scholarship, recruitment, and new member education programs. President Miles Buchanan was chosen as an Undergraduate Representative on the National Board of Directors and will serve a twoyear term.

UGA IFC received the Educational Programming, the Risk Management & the Sustainability Awards

The University of Georgia Interfraternity Council was honored with three regional awards by the Southeastern Interfraternity Conference this past February. The awards were presented at the SEIFC Leadership Academy. The Educational Programming Award for its sponsorship of various educational programs throughout the year. The council’s members participate in two Greek Life Office leadership programs, the Sophomore’s Leaders Circle and the Greek Ambassador’s Program.

The UGA Alumni Association recently held their inaugural “40 under Forty” Awards Luncheon on Sept. 15 at the InterContinental Buckhead in Atlanta. The awards recognized 40 outstanding graduates under the age of 40, with over 450 nominations being sent in to the Alumni Association for consideration. Two former Interfraternity Council Officers, Chris Carr and Eddie Garrett were honored as well as many other Greek men and women. Congratulations to all those who were honored!

The Risk Management Award recognizes the IFC that best sets and enforces minimum standards and promotes ethical conduct and responsibility while educating chapter leaders and members on risk management issues. The Sustainability Award recognizes IFC programs and initiatives that encourage sustainability in order to meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the needs of future generations. This past year, the UGA IFC partnered with the UGA Office of Sustainability in a nationwide recyclable waste collecting competition for fraternities.

UgaMiracle Exec Member Robert Knotts hard at work in the Joe LoCicero Conference Room. On an everyday basis many of our students find a quiet place in the Greek Life Office to study. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Joe at the GLOâ&#x20AC;? is a program we offer during finals where snacks and coffee are provided free of charge to all students to increase awareness of where the Greek Life Office is on campus. Academics are a top priority in the Greek Community and we are very proud of the consistently excellent performance of our fraternity men.

Past IFC Advisor Wes Fugate is to be credited for initiating this re-branding effort and we believe that it was pivotal for reaching out to the large number of men who participated in IFC Fall Fraternity Recruitment. We anticipate it adding a central theme to our new website which will be launching very soon!

GIVING BACK Phi Kappa Theta Helps Dedicate Remembrance Trail

Sigma Chi’s Commitment to Service Wins Award FIJI & UGA ROTC Team up to host Blood Drive

The Delta Rho Chapter of Phi Kappa Theta played an integral part in a local Alumni’s 9/11 Remembrance Trail Ceremony that was attended by many Athens Residents. Before the 10th anniversary of the tragedy that was 9/11, Phi Kaps went to the home of fraternity alum Bob Hart to help maintain and update the trail in a variety of ways. They tended all the paths along the two-acre wide trail, updated name markers in remembrance of those who died during 9/11, refurbished benches that had been donated, and repainted murals located on the trail. During the Memorial Ceremony, brothers honored those who passed by reading their names, ringing a chime after all names were read, and brother Will Jourdain playing Taps.

This past year the Delta Chapter of Sigma Chi was honored with The Peterson Significant Chapter Award. The award is the highest honor bestowed upon an undergraduate chapter. Over the past two years the chapter has raised enough money to fund its’ own Habitat for Humanity house, which construction will begin on this semester. Throughout the year, the fraternity hosts semi-annual blood drives for the American Red Cross, actively participates in the Athens’ Boys and Girls Club, and many members mentor at local schools in Athens-Clarke and Oconee County. Last year, Sigma Chi raised money for M.D. Anderson, an experimental cancer treatment center in Houston. The fraternity became aware of the center after one of their brothers was diagnosed with Stage 4 Melanoma.

In recognition of the tenth anniversary of September 11, 2001, the Kappa Deuteron chapter of Phi Gamma Delta and the UGA ROTC hosted a blood drive in Memorial Hall. With the help of the Armed Services Blood Program, the organizations were able to collect 111 pints of blood for armed services members serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition to current University students and Phi Gamma Delta alumni, current members of the military attended the blood drive.

OF NOTE: …Over the past year the Gamma Chapter of

Kappa Alpha Order has raised over $23,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. They have also continued their tutoring program with local churches and recently sponsored UGA Miracle’s Little Big Town Concert at the Georgia Theatre.

NOTABLE ALUMNI Every semester this section will highlight 2 outstanding University of Georgia fraternity alumni with a brief description of their impact on the state and the nation

Joe Frank Harris was governor of Georgia from 1983 to 1991. He started off working for a family concrete business. Eventually, he was convinced by local leaders to run for the Georgia State Legislature, and was accordingly backed in a gubernational race in 1983. Harris was known for bringing a businesslike approach to the role of governor, and he achieved great results. He is credited for securing education reform, the Georgia Dome, the 1996 Olympics, and education reform. After his time in the public sector, he went to serve on the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.

Sinkwich was honored as being the first Heisman winner from the University of Georgia. He played under coach Wally Butts, where he led the Bulldogs to a national championship. In his three-year college career, Sinkwich rushed for 2,271 yards, passed for 2,331 yards, and accounted for 60 touchdowns–30 rushing and 30 passing. He was honored as being voted the Number 1 Athlete of 1942 in the Associated Press’ annual poll. He then went on to play at the Detroit Lions, where he was voted NFL MVP of 1944. After his two years in Detroit, he went into the Merchant Marines and the Air Force. Vince Dooley stated that "we've lost one of the great legends in football history," about Sinkwich’s death in 1990.
