New Student Orientation SUMMER2020

WELCOME TO THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING! New/Transfer/International Student Orientation

The purpose of New/Transfer/International Student Orientation is to provide an introduction to the many resources the University offers to enhance your student experience as you pursue your degree. The University only admits students who they know can be successful. We are here to provide the challenge and support to help you in that endeavor. Besides earning a degree, you may also earn one or more minors, a second major, conduct undergraduate research, participate in a co-op or internship, participate in or lead one or more student organizations, do study abroad, become a teaching assistant, participate in RISE, or a myriad of other things. The Academic Advisement and the Student Development and Support Offices can provide further information about all of this. Through our Virtual meetings this summer, we will present all the information we would have normally presented in-person to orient you to the college and your department. As well, we are looking forward to meeting you virtually for your Academic Advising Appointment where we will be able to answer many, if not all, of the questions you may have. Kind regards, F. Charles Shermeyer Assistant Dean for UG Services 141 P.S. DuPont Hall (302) 831-8659 eg-advisement@udel.edu

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING ENGINEERING COMPUTER & INFORMATION SCIENCES

GOAL OF NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION ADVISEMENT (NSO) The College of Engineering (COE) conducts Advisement sessions for students during New/Transfer/International Student Orientation, the goal of which is to ensure COE students are oriented to the College and have a complete semester schedule. Students are strongly encouraged to review their major requirements in the on-line UG Catalog (https://catalog.udel.edu/) prior to attending NSO so they can fully participate in this process. ADVISING INFORMATION SNAPSHOT • • • • • • • •

COE freshmen are admitted directly into an Engineering major or as an EGU (Engineering Undeclared). “Engineering Undeclared” is an Admissions category, not a major. All College of Engineering majors take a required First Year Experience (FYE) course, EGGG 101: Introduction to Engineering (2 credits). Biomedical Engineers take integrated Biology/Chemistry classes in the fall, BISC 207/CHEM 107, if seats are available; other EG majors take CHEM 103/133 instead of CHEM 107; Chemical Engineering majors and Materials Science Engineering majors take CHEM 111. The curriculum for Chemical Engineering majors starts with MATH 242: Analytic Geometry and Calculus B whereas other COE majors start with MATH 241: Analytic Geometry and Calculus A. Some majors take a Breadth Requirement course instead of ENGL 110 during the first term. Most freshmen COE students will select a lower level (100 to 200 level course) Breadth Requirement from the University Breadth Requirement list if they need one (see a listing of University Breadth Requirements being offered this fall later in this document). As necessary, adjustments will be made to account for Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), CAPE, or other test credit from high school, transfer credit from other colleges, and mathematics proficiency as indicated by the Math Placement Assessment (see next section). Students normally take their courses during the fall and spring semesters. However, it is possible to complete certain courses during the optional winter term in January/February or during one of the two five-week summer sessions. The courses COE students most frequently choose to take in the winter or summer terms are Calculus and Breadth requirement electives.

Mathematics • •

All COE students must take the on-line Mathematics Placement Assessment (MPA) accessible through their My Blue Hen Home Portal by June 16. Completion by June 16 will ensure their ability to register for the math course they need during their NSO appointment. Failure to complete the assessment process (including any remediation needed) by June 16 may preclude them from being enrolled in their required classes, which, in turn, may preclude them from completing their degree in a 4-year timeframe.

University Honors Program students may be instructed to take a paper Calculus Placement Exam by the Honors Program office depending upon their anticipated AP Calculus AB/BC score(s). Please contact the Honors Program at honorsprogram@udel.edu if you have questions about this.

Important:

Engineering and Computer and Information Sciences students who are not ready to begin with the first Calculus course specified for their major should plan on taking a Calculus course during the winter session of the first year or the summer prior to their sophomore year to get back on schedule. Students who place into MATH 010: Intermediate Algebra and do nothing to remediate that placement will most likely NOT be able to complete a COE degree in four years. Information about the MPA and entry-level math courses may be found at: http://www.mathsci.udel.edu/courses-placement/ud-mathplacement. Students who have taken an AP examination in Calculus may have credit for MATH 241 and, possibly, MATH 242 depending on the AP examination taken and the score earned, but it is not always advisable to “skip” ahead in the math curriculum. Some students may have transfer credit from other institutions for all or part of the mathematics sequence. Transfer credit is recorded in the Student Information System (UDSIS) once the University has received an official transcript from the other institution. The following Transfer Credit site provides very helpful information on all aspects of the transfer of coursework to the University: http://www1.udel.edu/registrar/transfer/. AP Credit • • •

CHEMISTRY: Students in all COE majors, except Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Engineering, with an appropriate score on the AP Chemistry exam may use the credit for all or part of the CHEM 103/133 and CHEM 104/134 (or 107/108) sequence. PHYSICS: Students in all COE majors with an appropriate score on the AP Physics-C1 (Mechanics) and/or Physics-C2 (Electricity) exam(s) may apply it to PHYS 207 and/or PHYS 208, respectively. COMPUTER SCIENCE: The AP Computer Science-A course is taught in Java, so it bears no resemblance to our CISC 106 or CISC 108 course content. While it covers much of CISC 181, there are still significant pieces that are missing. So, we will award CISC 166 (elective) credit for a score of 3, 4, or 5 on the AP Computer Science test and invite those who earn a 5 to test out of CISC 181. Effectively, this means that students who have taken the AP Computer Science exam will still have to take CISC 106 or 108 in the fall term.

Breadth Requirements UNIVERSITY BREADTH REQUIREMENTS: All COE students are required to complete a minimum of 12 credits from the list of University breadth courses. This includes 3 credits from each of the following categories: • Creative Arts and Humanities • History and Cultural Change • Social and Behavioral Sciences • Math, Natural Sciences and Technology*

* COE students usually satisfy this category requirement by one of the following courses required in their major: CHEM 103/133, CHEM 107, CHEM 104/134, CHEM 108, CHEM 111, CHEM 112, CISC 106, CISC 108, MATH 241, MATH 242, MATH 243, PHYS 207, or PHYS 208. REGULATIONS REGARDING UNIVERSITY BREADTH REQUIREMENTS: • Students must earn a minimum grade of C- in each course. • Students must take breadth courses from four different department/subject areas (i.e., the fourletter subject code ACCT, HIST, etc.). • Students may not use a course that is cross-listed with a department/subject area that has already been used to satisfy a university breadth requirement. • Students enrolled in a single major may not satisfy the breadth requirement with courses in the subject area of that major (e.g., Chemistry majors may not use CHEM courses). • Students who are enrolled in more than one major or degree are allowed to meet the University breadth requirement by taking approved breadth courses from within the subject areas of their majors. • The requirement may be fulfilled through a course or courses taken to complete other degree requirements, subject to the limitations above. COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING ADDITIONAL BREADTH REQUIREMENTS • Engineering, Computer Science BS, and Information Systems BS majors must complete an additional 9 credits of breadth requirement coursework as specified in the UG Catalog. • Computer Science BA majors must complete an additional 25 credits of breadth coursework as specified in the UG Catalog. NOTE REGARDING CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT (CEM) BREADTH REQUIREMENTS • The CEM major is structured so students earn a Certificate in Business Essentials offered by the Lerner College of Business and Economics. Therefore, CEM students should consult their Academic Advisor every term to make sure they are taking the proper Breadth courses. FOREIGN LANGUAGE COURSES The only major in the College of Engineering that requires proficiency in a foreign language is the Computer Science Bachelor of Arts degree. However, other COE students can take foreign language courses as part of their COE Additional Breadth Requirements. • • •

Students with no prior experience in high school start at the 105 level (SPAN 105, GRMN 105, etc.). Students with 2-3 years of experience in the same foreign language in high school start at the 106 level (SPAN 106, GRMN 106, etc.) Students with 4 years of experience in the same foreign language in high school start at the 107 level (SPAN 107, GRMN 107, etc.).

If you are interested in taking a foreign language course, please let your academic advisor know during New Student Orientation.

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING GUIDELINES FOR ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT PROCEDURES FOR ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT Academic advisement encompasses the development and delivery of information regarding career options, academic programs, support services, policies, and administrative procedures to aid students in pursuing their educational goals. Students are responsible for setting their goals, making use of the normal advisement process, and seeking timely assistance when difficult situations arise. Engineering students are assigned a Faculty Advisor and students should consult with their Faculty Advisor at least twice a year during the fall and spring registration periods. Engineering students should also obtain their Faculty Advisor’s approval when registering for winter or summer sessions and when adding or dropping courses. The fall and spring registration procedure is as follows: 1. Student schedules an appointment to meet with their Faculty Advisor. 2. Student makes a tentative selection of the courses they wish to take before meeting with their Faculty Advisor. When selecting Breadth Requirement Electives, the student must refer to the UG Catalog sections pertaining to University Breadth Requirements and College of Engineering Additional Breadth Requirements. 3. Student meets with their Faculty Advisor to discuss their plans and obtain Faculty Advisor’s approval. 4. Student registers on-line via “Web Reg” in the UD Student Information System (UDSIS).

IMPORTANT NOTE: Students who need additional information or help with the registration/advisement process during their first semester should contact their department Academic Advisor at the phone number or email address listed on Academic Advisors page in this booklet.

ACADEMIC TIPS FOR INCOMING STUDENTS Following is a list of tips that have proved helpful to previous new students in the College of Engineering: •

Familiarize yourself with your UDSIS Student Center page.

Get to know your Faculty Advisor (listed on your UDSIS Student Center page) and obtain their assistance in selecting courses each semester, but remember, it is your responsibility to make sure all your graduation requirements are met.

Familiarize yourself with the contents of the UG Catalog http://catalog.udel.edu/ for the year you entered the University.

Check your UDEL e-mail often. Always add your UDID # to email pertaining to academic issues.

Become very familiar with the list of Breadth Requirement courses as they apply to your major. Access University and College Breadth Requirement lists at the College of Engineering page in the UG Catalog (http://catalog.udel.edu/)

If you need guidance, first contact your Faculty Advisor or your Department Academic Advisor. If they cannot provide you with the assistance you need, they will refer you to the Office of Academic Advisement in 141 P.S. DuPont Hall.

If you are planning to add or drop a course, be sure to find out how the registration change may affect the date you expect to graduate or your ability to continue in other courses you are taking.

If you must change your schedule of classes, be sure to do it before the published deadlines.

Check to see if you have satisfied the pre-requisites before registering for upper-level sequential courses.

• •

Get to know your professors. Meet with them before you encounter difficulty in a course. If you are having serious difficulty in a course or personal problems that affect your class work, seek assistance promptly from the Instructor, your Faculty Advisor, the Department Academic Advisor, the Department Undergraduate Coordinator, or the Assistant Dean (in that order).

If you are planning to change your major within the College of Engineering, contact your Department Academic Advisor for information on this process.

If you are planning to change your major to one within another College, contact the Assistant Dean.

If you are considering permanently withdrawing from or taking a temporary leave of absence from the University, contact the Assistant Dean.

Always be aware of deadlines that apply to Drop/Add and Change of Registration.

If you are considering taking a course at another institution during any semester, winter term, or summer term, read course transfer information at http://www1.udel.edu/registrar/transfer/ . Contact your Department Academic Advisor if you have questions.

Keep copies of all your important documents: receipts of bills paid, financial aid letters, grade reports, correspondence, e-mail correspondence, etc.

Manage your time wisely. Academic events move much more rapidly in a university than in a high school!

Enjoy being a college student. There will be lots of new demands and challenges and lots of new friends and opportunities.

ACCELERATED DEGREE PROGRAMS

4+1

BACHELOR’S/MASTER’S PROGRAMS Leading employers recognize the value of master's-level education. In as little as one year beyond your undergraduate degree, you can enhance your career opportunities by earning a graduate degree.

How Does it Work? 4+1 Bachelor’s/Master’s programs allow a select group of students to apply for graduate programs in their junior year. If granted provisional acceptance, you may take graduate-level courses during the final year of your undergraduate program. Because some courses are counted toward both the undergraduate and graduate degree in an accelerated program, you’ll be able to earn both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in only one additional year. Available Programs Diversify your career choices by combining your bachelor’s degree with a master’s degree in one of the following areas:

Business Administration (MBA) Civil Engineering (MCE) Cybersecurity (MS) Electrical & Computer Engineering (MSECE) Materials Science & Engineering (MMSE) Mechanical Engineering (MSME) Particle Technology (MEPT) Learn more: engr.udel.edu/four-plus-one Contact us: College of Engineering 141 Du Pont Hall Newark, DE 19716 Phone: 302-831-8659 Email: eg-advisement@udel.edu

The College of Engineering has no specific requirements regarding brand, operating system (i.e., Microsoft Windows vs. Apple macOS), or configuration - in general, we recommend using the University of Delaware’s recommended minimum system requirements as a guideline, with the following additional notes: •

Students in all programs will benefit from using a laptop computer (vs. a desktop) due to an emphasis on in-class and group technology-based projects. •

Students in the Electrical and Computer Engineering program have no brand or operating system requirements. Students in these programs can be successful using hardware that meets the minimum UD specifications. •

Students in the Computer and Information Sciences program pursuing either a BA or BS in Computer Science or a BS in Information Systems should purchase computers satisfying the following requirements. Machines meeting these specifications will likely suffice for a 4-year CIS undergraduate career: ▪ Type: a laptop/notebook is necessary for many classes ▪ CPU: 8th Gen or later Intel Core i5, i7, or i9, or 2nd Gen or later AMD Ryzen 5 or 7.  The CPU should have at least 4 cores. ▪ OS: • Windows: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise or Education version • Mac: Macintosh OS X 10.14.X “Mojave” or later • Linux: Ubuntu 18.04.X LTS (or later LTS) ▪ RAM: at least 16GB •

Students in the Material Science and Engineering programs are encouraged to use a computer with the following minimum specifications in addition to UD’s recommended minimum system requirements. ▪ CPU: 8th Gen or later Intel Core i5, i7, or i9, or 2nd Gen or later AMD Ryzen 5 or 7.  The CPU should have at least 4 cores. •

Students in the Biomedical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering programs will benefit by having a computer powerful enough to support the demanding video and computational requirements necessary for their coursework. For these academic programs we recommend a computer with the following minimum specifications in addition to UD’s minimum recommendation: ▪ CPU: 8th Gen or later Intel Core i5, i7 or i9, or 2nd Gen or later AMD Ryzen 5 or 7.  The CPU should have at least 4 cores. ▪ OS: Windows 10 (64bit) ▪ RAM: at least 16GB ▪ GPU: Discrete graphics processor from AMD or NVidia. ▪ Students with experience setting up and operating virtual machines or dual booting machines may elect to choose from a wider range of operating systems, such as macOS and Linux. • Storage: a 512GB SSD or larger is recommended if you intend to run virtual machines or dual boot.
