BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING

Engineering Meets Biology and Medicine Biomedical engineering (BME) applies quantitative engineering analysis and design to biological and medical problems. BME reveals basic knowledge of disease mechanisms to improve human health and develops new technologies and therapies to improve the quality of life. Examples include designing stroke rehabilitation equipment, developing drug delivery methods for cancer, modeling HIV disease processes, engineering cardiovascular tissue models, researching the progression of osteoarthritis, and more! Our undergraduate program trains students to bridge the gaps between engineering, medicine, and biomedical research. We provide a design-focused curriculum that couples a broad foundation in chemical, mechanical, materials science and electrical engineering principles with opportunities to develop depth and tailor the curriculum to students’ career goals and interests. We prepare students for professional employment in biomedical industries and entry into advanced studies, including graduate school, medical school, and other health-related professions. Our faculty make our department truly special. Several of our professors have been recognized by professional societies as among the best researchers and educators in the country. Undergraduate students have opportunities to do research in nanomedicine, biomechanics, neuroengineering, tissue engineering and more, enriching their coursework.

BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING BME @ UD Our program enables students to apply quantitative engineering design and analysis to biomedicine. Beginning in their first year, students are exposed to the engineering design process and coached through building their technical excellence and professional skills, making them desirable candidates for a variety of career paths. Equipped with a strong foundation in mathematics, the life sciences, and engineering analysis and design, students learn to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems based on fundamental biomedical concepts; to design and conduct laboratory experiments; and to critically analyze and interpret data.

Chemical ENGINEERING Research opportunities Our undergraduates benefit from the active research programs in the department. Ongoing forefront research ensures not only that the content of the undergraduate program is constantly renewed and maintained at a challenging technical level, but also that discovery learning is integrated into the program. Our undergraduates often work with faculty and graduate students as research assistants—for pay or credit—during the academic year or the summer. In fact, more than 75% of our graduating seniors have participated in some type of research experience in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering or other engineering scientific discipline on campus.

Civil ENGINEERING

Designing The Future

Employment of civil engineers is projected to grow by 11 percent between 2016 and 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Our civil engineering program prepares students with foundations in math, science, and engineering through required courses. Starting spring of junior year, students take technical electives in the focus areas of structural, geotechnical, environmental, water resources, transportation, railroad, or ocean and coastal engineering. Minors in environmental engineering, sustainable infrastructure, and environmental sustainability are also offered. Our faculty are active researchers, ensuring that the content of the undergraduate program is current and maintained at a challenging technical level and integrates discovery learning. Opportunities abound for undergraduates to work with faculty and graduate students as research assistants, either for pay or independent study credit. Research in the department covers a broad range of topics with particular strengths in bridge design, construction, evaluation and rehabilitation; applications of composite materials to concrete, steel, and earth structures; field studies and numerical and physical modeling of wave/ shoreline interactions; intelligent transportation systems; management and operation of civil infrastructure systems; natural disaster risk modeling and sustainability.

Well-qualified civil engineering majors may apply to the 4+1 program to earn a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (BCE) and a Master of Civil Engineering (MCE) degree within 5 years.

Construction ENGINEERING & Management

Building the Future

Construction engineers lead the most dynamic, costly phase of civil and environmental engineering projects: construction of the physical facility. Construction engineers are at the center of an industry that is going through a revolutionary transformation into the next generation of construction project delivery: Construction 4.0. UD’s construction engineers are prepared to lead the industry into the future. Thanks to technologies such as building information modeling (BIM), virtual and augmented reality, and advanced visualization, construction engineers can now construct virtually and optimize the processes before breaking ground. Drones and photogrammetry, laser scanning, infrared tools, and advanced sensors are making construction sites safer and more productive. Robotics and integrated manufacturing promise to improve quality while drastically reducing the time for project delivery. “Big Data” analytics, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence are bringing the creative solutions of Silicon Valley into construction engineering design. Meanwhile, new materials and methods such as 3D printed concrete promise to change the way business is done in the future. UD construction engineers are uniquely positioned to lead the industry and integrate cutting-edge tools into the construction process because of our rigorous core curriculum and added benefits. Endless career opportunities

From heart-rate monitors and refrigerators to laptops and mobile phones, computerized gadgets are everywhere. More and more of these gadgets are communicating and coordinating through networks to massive cloud computing centers that are distributed around the world. Not only do computer engineers design computers and digital equipment, but they also design software that runs on the computers and develop algorithms that are implemented by the software. Today’s computer engineers brought us the internet in our connected world. How will you change the future as a computer engineer?

After graduation

UD electrical and computer engineering graduates pursue exciting, rewarding, and successful careers. On average, 70–80% of graduates with a Bachelor of Computer Engineering degree choose employment in private industry, government laboratories and agencies, and non-profit research centers. Approximately 15–20% of computer engineering graduates choose to continue their education toward a master’s or Ph.D. degree, and some graduates will opt to attend medical, law, or business school. Students who earn advanced degrees in engineering usually pursue a career in advanced research in industry or academia.

COMPUTER ENGINEERING Two degrees at once Talented undergraduates are urged to apply to the ECE department’s 4+1 Bachelor of Computer Engineering/ Master of Science Electrical & Computer Engineering program. The program allows students to finish both a bachelor’s degree and a Masters degree in five years. Students must be accepted into the graduate program, must take 6 of their technical elective credits in 600 level ECE courses acceptable to the ECE graduate program, and must complete all other requirements for the BCpE degree. Computers are integral to modern culture and are the primary engine behind much of the world’s economic growth. Moreover, the field continues to evolve at an astonishing pace, making computer science a vibrant discipline. UD’s Department of Computer and Information Science Program is producing the next generation workforce with a solid foundation in the theory and practice of computer science. Electrical Engineering Two degrees at once Talented undergraduates are urged to apply to the ECE department’s 4+1 Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (BEE)/Master of Science Electrical & Computer Engineering (MSECE) program. The program allows students to finish both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in five years. Students must be accepted into the graduate program, must take 6 of their technical elective credits in 600 level ECE courses acceptable to the ECE graduate program, and must complete all other requirements for the BEE degree. Safeguarding The Future

Environmental engineering applies scientific principles and engineering tools to improve the natural environment, address pollution problems, and ensure environmental sustainability. Environmental engineers provide safe drinking water, treat and dispose of hazardous wastes, clean up contaminated soil and groundwater, and maintain the quality of air, water, and land resources. Our strong core curriculum provides students with rigorous training in the causes, control, and prevention of environmental contamination and the flexibility to secure their future in an environmental profession. Students gain knowledge in the fate of environmental contaminants, analysis and design of solutions to real-world environmental problems, and the application of modeling and simulation methods to assess risk and estimate cost. Active research ensures that the content of the curriculum is current, maintained at a technically challenging level and that discovery learning is integrated into the program. Opportunities abound for environmental engineering undergraduates to work with faculty and graduate students in our world-class research program. Roughly two-thirds of our students work as research assistants.

Real-world experience An optional co-op program provides students the opportunity to gain valuable experience working in the profession while completing their degree. To be effective, these systems must aid and enhance our business, government and service organizations, which requires a careful understanding of the factors controlling human interactions, as well as the technical potential and limitations of computer systems. Information Systems Intense preparation Students pursuing a degree in information systems must fulfill a set of major courses along with 1) a set of business courses (referred to as the business core) and 2) a set of information systems courses (referred to as the information systems core). The business core emphasizes management and marketing issues. Materials Matter Everything we see and use is made from materials derived from the earth, and advanced materials are essential to nearly every modern technology. Materials Science and Engineering is the broad interdisciplinary field that uses the principles of physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering to develop better, safer and more sustainable materials. Materials Science & Engineering MSEG @ UD The Materials Science and Engineering (MSEG) Department at the University of Delaware is a world leader in research and education related to the design, synthesis, processing, and characterization of solid organic, inorganic, and hybrid materials. MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

We Build Engineers Mechanical engineering is one of the most diverse branches of engineering, and it involves the design and analysis of machines, structures, and materials by applying the principles of physics and materials science. Mechanical engineers can do it all, from designing cars, airplanes, and robots, to developing renewable energy systems, medical devices, and stronger and lighter composite materials. Our particular focus of UD’s mechanical engineering program is the development of hands-on engineering and design skills. Our 5,500-squarefoot Design Studio combines state-of-the-art facilities such as 3D printers and computer-aided manufacturing with collaborative areas where student design teams work together. Our internationally recognized faculty conduct research in multi-disciplinary areas of Biomechanics, Clean Energy and Environment, Composites and Advanced Materials, Nanotechnology, and Robotics. Students are encouraged to work directly with faculty on state-of-the-art research projects. With a degree in mechanical engineering, you can find employment in many industries such as aerospace, automotive, biomedical engineering, consulting, manufacturing, petroleum engineering, robotics and autonomy, structural engineering, or thermal and mechanical design. Because mechanical engineers have such broad exposure to fundamental engineering science and design, they are also frequently drawn into business, finance or law. UD mechanical engineering graduates are prepared to face any challenge they encounter – no matter which path they choose.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Additional Opportunities Active research ensures that the content of the undergraduate program is constantly renewed and maintained at a challenging technical level that integrates discovery learning into the program. Opportunities abound for mechanical engineering undergraduates to work with faculty and graduate students as research assistants, either for pay or independent study credit. Minors

Choosing a Minor

Minors are less intensive and comprehensive than majors but provide greater coherence than a group of courses selected at random, allowing students to explore their interests in a particular field. In general, a minor requires five to seven courses to be completed in its subject area. Because students may count courses for credit against both majors and minors, it is often possible to complete a minor by doing no additional work if a student chooses his or her courses carefully. In addition, many engineering majors choose minors in complementary subjects such as biology, chemistry, economics, foreign languages, mathematics and physics.

How Does it Work? 4+1 Bachelor’s/Master’s programs allow a select group of students to apply for graduate programs in their junior year. If granted provisional acceptance, you may take graduate-level courses during the final year of your undergraduate program. Because some courses are counted toward both the undergraduate and graduate degree in an accelerated program, you’ll be able to earn both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in only one additional year. WHEN DO COE STUDENTS TYPICALLY COMPLETE THEIR INTERNSHIPS?

WHEN SHOULD I START LOOKING FOR A SUMMER INTERNSHIP?

Students typically complete their internships during the summer and/or winter sessions. Some local organizations also hire student interns to work part time during the fall or spring semester, as the student’s schedule permits.

Many engineering organizations begin their hiring process for summer interns as early as the fall semester. Your internship search should be an ongoing process, beginning in the fall and continuing throughout the year until you have secured a position.

CAN I GRADUATE IN FOUR YEARS IF I COMPLETE AN INTERNSHIP? Because internship opportunities typically occur during the summer or winter sessions, engineering students still have the opportunity to complete their degree in four years.

CAN I COMPLETE INTERNSHIPS WITH MORE THAN ONE COMPANY? It is common for students to complete internships at more than one company.

WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO FIND AN INTERNSHIP? The Career Services Center posts internship opportunities for UD students to their online job portal, Handshake. WHAT IS THE AVERAGE HOURLY PAY RATE FOR ENGINEERING INTERNSHIPS? Engineering student interns can expect to be paid approximately $15-$30 per hour. This may vary depending on your major and the employer.

HOW MANY INTERNSHIPS ARE POSTED EACH YEAR FOR COE STUDENTS? The Career Services Center receives over 1,000 internship postings for students majoring in engineering each year. Some of these companies also come to campus to conduct on-campus interviews for these positions.

Tackling the problem of beach erosion

Using virtual reality to help patients heal

Sydney Cargill, a civil engineering major, developed a solar array to study sand movement during heavy wave action on a beach. The results could be used by resource managers to mitigate erosion. Her advisor was Jack Puleo, Director of the Center for Applied Coastal Research.

Alina Christenbury, a computer science major, studied tools for augmented reality and virtual reality experiences and was part of a team that built a virtual reality game designed to increase physical therapy patients’ enjoyment of their treatment. Christenbury worked with Roghayeh (Leila) Barmaki, assistant professor in computer and information sciences.

Helping people heal from injury Arif Peracha, a biomedical engineering major, explored whether leg dominance is correlated with different mechanical properties of the Achilles tendon. This research could help clinicians offer improved treatments for people with Achilles tendinopathy. Peracha studied with Karin Silbernagel, associate professor of physical therapy.

Developing next-generation spacesuits Erin Hogan, a chemical engineering major, developed and optimized materials to be used in spacesuits. These materials can enhance astronaut protection from micrometeoroids, abrasions, low-pressure environments, and other hazards. She studied with Norman Wagner, the Unidel Robert L. Pigford Chair in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.

Protecting our electrical systems Jeffrey Neumann, a mechanical engineering major, and Ahmad Tamimi, a computer engineering major, were involved in the NASA Cubesat Radio Interferometry Experiment (CURIE) mission, which used satellites to gather data about the super-charged plasma that radiates from the sun, especially during solar flares. These violent eruptions of highenergy radiation can damage electrical systems here on Earth. Neumann and Tamimi studied with Ben Maruca, assistant professor of physics.

Keeping bridges safe Colleen Murray, a mechanical engineering major, worked on the development of carbon nanotube-based sensors that can be used to monitor cracks in againg infrastructure. She studied under Erik Thostenson, associate professor of mechanical engineering and member of UD’s world-renowned Center for Composite Materials. After graduation, Murray continued the project as part of a master’s degree in materials science and engineering.

Global learning experiences Did you know that America’s first study abroad program was launched at the University of Delaware in 1923? Today, UD engineering students have a variety of opportunities to enhance their education through global experiences.

Here are just a few of the paths you could take.

STUDY ABROAD DURING WINTER SESSION WITH THE INSTITUTE FOR GLOBAL STUDIES (IGS). UD’s winter session is an ideal time to study abroad, and IGS supports study abroad through its IGS Need-Based Scholarships and the Delaware Diplomats program. SPEND A SEMESTER ABROAD THROUGH AN EXCHANGE PROGRAM. Chemical engineering students can apply to spend a semester at National University of Singapore to complete UD-transferrable coursework. USE YOUR ENGINEERING SKILLS FOR GOOD. UD has an active chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB), a non-profit, humanitarian organization of students and professionals who believe everyone should have access to adequate sanitation, safe drinking water and resources to meet their basic needs. Recently, UD’s EWB chapter has worked on bringing potable water to communities in Malawi and the Phillippines. HAVE A GLOBAL EXPERIENCE RIGHT AT HOME. UD offers a variety of programming on campus, from international film screenings to music performances to workshops and much more.
