As a midwifery student at the University of British Columbia, you’ll be equipped with the tools and expertise to provide maternity care services across a broad range of settings. Midwifery Program at the University of British Columbia (UBC) has been preparing midwives for over a decade.

on a full-time basis, the four-year Bachelor of Midwifery (BMW) degree program provides a relevant and high-quality educational experience that allows graduates to enter directly to practice following licensure. receive close mentorship from highly-accomplished faculty and clinical faculty, with wide-ranging expertise in research, social justice, the humanities and international health.

of the classroom, students gain hands-on, professional experience through a series of clinical placements across the province — including in rural and remote midwifery practices.
ff Outside
are also given an opportunity to expand their maternity care skillset beyond the borders of Canada. Through the Midwifery Global Citizenship Program, a select group of UBC midwifery students are afforded the opportunity to travel to a developing region of the world and gain experience working in under-resourced health care settings, alongside local midwives and physicians.

Island Cohort The Island Cohort is a unique initiative that offers midwifery students the opportunity to move to Vancouver Island in their second year of the program.
ff Our
graduates are working as midwives across a variety of settings in B.C. and across Canada. Additionally, many graduates are now serving as preceptors and clinical faculty in our program, supporting the education of our current students.

Every year, up to eight midwifery students are selected to join the Island Cohort. After completing their first year of academic study in Vancouver, Island Cohort students move to Victoria, where they have the opportunity to develop close bonds with the community of midwives on the Island.
With a number of family doctors, obstetricians and midwives set to retire in the coming years, there’s a need for more maternity care providers in British Columbia and across Canada.
