Welcome Note Founded in 1979, the University of Algarve (UAlg) is the reference university institution in southern Portugal, and is recognized for its competitive research at international level, quality teaching and social commitment. UAlg has ten thousand students, eight hundred teachers and researchers, and four hundred and fifty non-teaching employees. It includes three university faculties - Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, Faculty of Sciences and Technology and Faculty of Economics - and four polytechnic schools - School of Education and Communication, School of Management, Hospitality and Tourism, School of Health and Institute of Engineering. UAlg is established in four campuses, three in the city of Faro (Penha, Gambelas and Saúde) and one in the city of Portimão, and offers forty-eight undergraduate courses (1st cycle), five integrated Masters (1st and 2nd cycles), 68 Master degrees (2nd cycle) and 23 Doctoral degrees (3rd cycle). UAlg has ten students’ residences with accommodation for more than six hundred students, several canteens and cafeterias, sports facilities and access to medical support. The University of Algarve develops wide and competitive developmental research activity at international level, carried out through seven Research Centres and eleven Study and Development Centres. UAlg conducts research in a large diversity of areas: i) Arts, Communication and Heritage; ii) Earth, Sea and Environment; iii) Economics, Management and Tourism; iv) Engineering and Technologies; v) Health Sciences and Technologies, and vi) Social and Educational Sciences. The internationalization strategy of the University of Algarve has been reinforced through active participation in several student and staff mobility programmes. In the last years, there has been a significant increase of foreign students from more than 60 countries due to this internationalization strategy. The number of students from third countries currently represents more than ten percent of all students, forty percent of them integrating programmes benefiting from international or bilateral protocols. UAlg is pioneer in coordinating mobility projects in Portugal, particularly in the Erasmus Mundus programme, which offers Masters and Doctoral courses in partnership with a wide number of Higher Education institutions, especially in Europe. UAlg also has cooperation programmes with Brazil, Cape Verde and other Portuguese speaking countries, as well as other regions in the world. UAlg signed about 350 inter-institutional agreements in the most varied scientific areas. Another point worth highlighting is the entrepreneurial drive of UAlg’s students and graduates in establishing many successful spin-offs of knowledge-transfer to the market in the prospect of creating value and social impact. In these last three decades, the University of Algarve has consolidated the link established with regional businesses and with public and private organisations, encouraging the transfer of knowledge and making a relevant contribution to social development with an impact across the community. On behalf of the academic community of the University of Algarve, I would like to welcome all the Masters and Doctoral students and wish them a memorable stay. João Guerreiro Rector September 2012

BRIEF HISTORY A chosen place of settlement for various groups of people, the Algarve derives its name from the Moors AL-Gharb, meaning “The West”. This is but one clear example of the rich cultural heritage that the Moors left dotted across this region. The castles, fortresses, narrow roads and laceworkpatterned chimneys are some of the other landmarks that have survived the passage of history. From the Carthaginians and the Romans, the Algarve received further valuable legacies. The Ruínas de Milreu, in Estoi, and the Roman villa Cerro da Vila, in Vilamoura, are good examples of Roman civilisation and come fully equipped with visitor centres that illustrate the realities of everyday life many centuries ago. The golden age of the Portuguese voyages of discovery placed the Algarve at the centre of some of the key events in those great adventures that opened up new worlds to the West. Setting sail from Lagos and Sagres were caravels of Prince Henry, the Navigator, and explorers such as Gil Eanes, a renowned Algarvian honoured for his daring feats.

ABOUT THE ALGARVE Due to its geographical situation, the Algarve enjoys one of the best climates in Europe all year round, with only a short period of rainfall (normally between November and March), maximum temperatures varying between 15°C and 31°C, and long hours of sunshine (the highest in Europe). With fine white sand beaches all along its coastline and a calm sea with water temperatures of around 22°C in the summer, the Algarve is perfect for the so-called “beach tourism”, although a wide range of different activities is offered. This is why the Algarve, the southernmost region of mainland Portugal, is its most popular tourist destination, and one of the most popular in Europe. With an area of 5,411 km2 and a permanent population of approximately 451,117 inhabitants, its population triples in the summer season due to a high influx of visitors. In total, the Algarve receives almost 10 million people every year, including national visitors, of which 7 million are foreign tourists. The Algarve possesses two main urban centres: (1) the city of Faro, capital of the region, with an international airport, sports stadium, three university campuses and the main hospital; and (2) the city of Portimão, Algarve’s second main city and home to the University’s fourth campus.
