Countryfolk Rumford and Dixfield Music Scholarships The Countryfolk Music Theatre on route 2 in East Dixfield held their youth music scholarship weekend / Mountain Man Rendezvous recently and provided local youths with nearly a thousand dollars in music scholarship monies. Larry Bisbee, operator of the Countryfolk project, said, “We are so pleased with the volunteers and donations that have made this all possible. For the first time we are able to send two youths to music/theatre camp at Camp Mechuwana in Winthrop for a week through our scholarships and a partnership with the camp. We have high hopes that local businesses and community organizations will support this scholarship effort by partnering with us with donations so we can continue the program. Four other youth musicians also received cash scholarship monies. We can only give what we have, but it’s to encourage

youths to continue with their musical dreams.” Scholarships were awarded this year in memory of Steve Bull and to all past, present and future members of the Old Crow Band for their 50 plus years of community music and support of youth musicians. Pictured are Krystal Blood and Erich Zurhorst, two of our Countryfolk Youth Music Scholarships awardees in 2009. They will be attending Music / Theatre camp for a week in August at Camp Mechuwana in Winthrop, Maine, directed by musician-playwright, Mitch Thomas of Lewiston, Maine, formerly of Livermore Falls. Krystal Blood of East Dixfield, Maine, was awarded her scholarship to music/theatre camp at the annual Countryfolk Youth Music Scholarship weekend. Richard is one of Irene’s sons and has completed the Nile Family genealogy. He brought this documentation with him to share with us. Part of that talk included: “My grandparents had 14 children. Those born in Dallas, Maine were Lloyd-1913, Floyd-1914, Richard-1915, Thelma-1916 (died age 3 be-

cause of an accident), Maurice-1918, Hildred-1919 (died age 11 with brain tumor), Ruth-1920, my mother Irene-1921, William-1922 (died shortly after birth), Martha-1923 and Isabel-1926. The last three born in Langtown, Maine were James-1928, Elizabeth-1929 and Lillian-1931.” Also included in his talk were his memories of growing up in Stratton, his school day shenanigans, his teachers, etc. Good job, Richard. We all enjoyed your talk. n

Dedicated to the Rumford Heart Walk

George Viger has given his family even more inspiration to participate in the Heart Walk that will begin at Hosmer Field on September 27 this year. Having lost a grandmother and an uncle to heart disease, Rose Marie Woods has had plenty of motivation to captain Community Energy’s Heart Walk team in the past and to help organize the Rumford part of the Central and Western Maine Heart Walk. But for the September 27, 2009 walk she has even more incentive. Since last year’s walk, her father has been added to the list of family members touched by heart disease. George Viger, Woods’ dad, had a heart attack and bypass surgery this past year. Woods isn’t the only family member who invests her time and energy in the walk. Brother Greg Viger

of Heart and Soul Photography not only photographed but also put together a slide

show on CD of the 2008 Rumford satellite walk. He has volunteered to do the same this year. Of course, these siblings aren’t the only dedicated walkers and organizers. Teams representing Bangor Savings Bank, Becky White’s family, Dead River Company, Franklin Savings Bank, Hannaford, Marden’s, Med-Care Ambulance, Mountain View Eyecare, Oxford Federal Credit Union, River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition, Rumford Hospital and Victorian Villa are also signed up to raise funds for the American Heart Association by participating in the walk. To learn more about the Heart Walk, to register a team or sign up as an individual, call Community Relations at Rumford Hospital, 369-1143 or go to www.centralmaineheartwalk.org. n

Have you ever heard of Herman? Herman was very popular in the 1800s with prospectors during the Gold Rush of 1849 and also in the Yukon Gold Rush of 1890. If your family was one of the many who crossed the states due west on the Oregon Trail, it’s almost certain your mother would have Herman to make her bread. It’s a safe bet that the cowboys all did too while out on the range herding cattle. They would keep it warm by putting it close to their chest while riding. Have you guessed yet that I am speaking of sourdough starter? The original recipe has been passed down from generation to generation. They say the prospectors named it Herman but where that came from, we don’t know… but there are those who believe it dates back to Jesus’ time and was named for Mount Herman in Israel.

Tales for the Journey - Live Your Dream - By Kevin Pennell The French romantic, poet, novelist, and dramatist Victor Hugo said, “There is nothing like a dream to create the future.” Humphrey Bogart, as Sam Spade in the Maltese Falcon, made the statement, “the stuff that dreams are made of” referring to the Maltese Falcon as something, a “dream” to be pursued. The last stanza of Van Halen’s song “Dreams” reads “And in the end, on dreams we will depend ‘cause that’s what dreams are made of” implying we should depend on and pursue our dreams. Finally, to round out purely arbitrary sources of references to dreams, Carly Simon wrote a song “The Stuff That Dreams Are Made of.” The focus of this dream reference points to maintaining a relationship. The refrain reads, “It’s the stuff that dreams are made of It’s the slow and steady fire It’s the stuff that dreams are made of It’s your heart and souls desire It’s the stuff that dreams are made of”

Dreams may create the future. They sometimes unveil one’s hopes and desires. Dreams may also be the fuel to keep one in pursuit of a task after others have quit. The most important question is this “What is your dream?” There are several definitions of the dream. One defines the dream as a series images, sensations, and thoughts that usually take place during sleep. Another speaks of a dream as a cherished ambition, ideal, or aspiration. Then there’s the one shadowed in disbelief as a self-deceiving and unrealistic fantasy which, given the proper circumstances, quenches the fire of nearly any dream. How strong is your dream? Is it strong enough to stand against its arch enemies, fear, ridicule, and doubt? List upon list can be produced identifying those who never gave up on their dream. Thomas Edison, Abraham Lincoln, Leonardo Da Vinci, Albert Einstein, and Mary Anderson are some. Who’s Mary Anderson? you say. She may be little known; you can

thank her for your windshield wipers the next time it rains when you’re in your car. That’s right. While some were leery of her bogus idea of the windshield wiper in 1903, she followed her dream and saw it through to a reality. Our dreams, while we sleep, can often open doorways to a new future, a better life, a key to overcoming an addiction, a new concept for a book or song, or even an invention. Some dreams remind us of events from our past that need to be addressed, so we can move forward with our life. Some also sense or see something or an event yet to take place. Then there dreams we daydream about like that new career, the new home, our soul mate,

or furthering our education. How do these come into reality? This subject has also been addressed from authors, to psychologists, teachers, and seers. The consensus among many of these would say that we create our reality (our dreams) through manifestation and putting the laws of attraction into practice, which is entirely another subject. The focus of this writing is to instill within the desire to follow your dreams. Don’t lose sight of them for a moment. Pursue them until you see the dream become the future you seek or until a better dream comes along. Dreams are not objects to pursue until the journey becomes to difficult to follow, and then we give up. Dreams give

He also has other acting creds, has performed in the Mid-Maine youth orchestra, studies jazz and dance with Boston City Lights and is a very talented young man. Countyfolk partnered with Camp Mechuwana for the scholarships for the first time this year. Larry Bisbee, operator of Countryfolk Music Theatre in East Dixfield, Maine, said, “I am so pleased we are able to offer the music camp experience in this, our 10th year of operation at Countryfolk. Nearly a thousand dollars in scholarship were awarded this year. We hope to partner with other businesses and community based organizations to provide continued musical opportunities for young

people. Music is the hearts of all of us, and we should do all that we can to offer opportunities to young people.” Other scholarships in 2009 went to 14-year-old Adam Mitchell of Fayette, Maine, 4-year-old Dakota Rich of Jay, Maine, and 10-year-old Lucas Mitchell of Fayette, Maine. Another award will be going to a deserving Downeast Country Music Association youth this fall from the Countryfolk Music Theatre in the name of Countryfolk’s “heart and soul,” Linda Latham, who died in a tragic car accident a year ago. August Concert in Rangeley

The Rangeley Friends of the Arts is excited to bring Daniel Taylor to Rangeley on August 28th for a concert at the Church of the Good Shepherd. Daniel Taylor is a Maine musician with a very feel-good style of writing. He has been playing guitar and singing since he was about 10 years old. He taught himself how to play guitar, drums, bass, and keyboard and then taught his two best friends, forming his first band by age 13, and played some of the finest venues and festivals in Central Maine as well as Nantucket and Boston, Massachusetts. At age 16 he tried out for Maine's American Idol and finished

in the top three but never pursued it, because of his commitment to his band. After playing around Connecticut for a few months in October of 2008, he had the opportunity of playing with Merle Haggard's world-renowned band "The Strangers" at Penn's Peak in Pennsylvania. Daniel has played at many of the finest venues in New England and just recently appeared on Ralph & Friends, a public broadcast in the greater Connecticut region. Daniel is also going to be on Community Auditions, a New England TV show seen by over 16 million people, later this month. Daniel says recently he has been focus-

ing on his writing and performing full-time. Tickets are available at Rangeley Lakes Chamber of Commerce, 864-5364. n

Gastroenterology Returns to Rumford Hospital

The doctors of Central Maine Gastroenterology will again be performing colonoscopies and endoscopies at Rumford Hospital at the end of August. For several years Central Maine Gastroenterology did not have enough physicians in the practice to come to Rumford on a regular basis, but now patients will not have to travel to be seen in Lewiston. These patients will be treated in the new, expanded surgical suite right in Rumford. “We are thrilled to have them back,” says Jane Aube, Director of Nursing. “They were in great demand when they were here before and, I know, that once people find out they’re back, they will have a busy practice again at Rumford Hospital.” Drs. Philip O’Connor, John Lewandowski and Michael Sivulich had been coming to Rumford Hospital on a regular basis until their schedules no longer permitted their travel. O’Connor, a graduate of St. Louis University School of Medicine, served his residency in internal medicine at Albany Medical Hospital in Albany, NY. He is certified in gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Lewandowski graduated from the University of MA Medical School in Worcester. He was a resident at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in NH and is certified in Gastroenterology. Sivulich earned his MD at Hahnemann University School of Medicine in Philadelphia and served his residency at the University of Pittsburg affiliated Western Pennsylvania Hospital. He is also certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Gastroenterology. Joining these physicians in rotations through Rumford Hospital day surgery will be Drs. Oswaldo Bisbal and Mark Branda. Bisbal earned his MD degree at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru, and served his residency in internal medicine at SUNY Downstate/ HSC in Brooklyn, NY. He is certified in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine. A graduate of the University of Vermont medical school, Branda completed his residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, CU. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. To make an appointment with the gastroenterologists, a patient must call Central Maine Gastroenterology’s main office at 7845784 upon referral from a primary care provider. n

Ask the Trainer, The Bittersweet Truth about Herbs and Spice well. In the July 2007 issue of “Today’s Dietitian,” an article written by Sharon Palmer, RD, focuses on the health benefits of herbs and spices. She concludes that one of the reasons for the high attention to herbs and spices is that they contain many antioxidants. In one such study, Karen Siegel, MPH, MS, RD, a nutritional consultant specializing in Chinese medicine practices in Houston, Texas, was noted as stating, “The benefits of culinary herbs and spices are primarily due to their antioxidant, antimicrobial and antiviral effects.” For decades Eastern practices have focused on the health benefits of herbs and spices and have used herbs for medicinal purposes. In this country, we are

Jodi Cornelio

The truth is that herbs and spices are better for you then you think. In fact, the spicier the better. Recent research is suggesting that people who indulge in the zesty types of spices are actually healthier. The American Spice Trade Association reported that “hot spices” such as red pepper, black and white pepper, and mustard seed make up 41% of the U.S. spice consumption. My guess is that many people are onto the fact that these spices have metabolic enhancing effects and they zest up favorite dishes as

just beginning to recognize these holistic approaches to better health. In fact, at the fourth annual Nutrition and Health conference held in Phoenix, Arizona, much attention was given to the use of herbs and spices for medicinal purposes in fighting disease. Many health professionals from around the country spoke to this topic.

It’s comforting to hear we are adopting some of the Eastern holistic approaches to health. One of the best gifts I ever received was the start of an herb garden given to me by a client and dear friend. I’ve continued to nurture my herb garden and set these precious herbs next to my BBQ grill. I sea-

Any-Deer Permit Deadline

State Representative Dale Crafts (R-Lisbon) would like to remind licensed hunters that time is running out to submit online applications for a 2009 Any-Deer Permit. The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (IFW) will accept applications through its website until 11:59 P.M. on August 17, 2009. A chance drawing will be held on September 11, 2009. Individuals must possess a valid Maine license to hunt big game at the time of applying for an AnyDeer Permit. Valid lifetime and complimentary hunt-

ing licenses are also acceptable. Licenses may be purchased online or from a licensed agent. Only those possessing an Any-Deer Permit may hunt doe deer or bucks with antlers less than three inches during the regular firearms and muzzle-loading seasons. A permit holder may take a buck with antlers three inches or longer anywhere in the state or any doe or buck within the wildlife management district for which the permit is valid. Applicants chosen through the random permit drawing will be issued a number. IFW will

no longer be mailing out Any-Deer Permits/transportation tags. Instead, Any-Deer Permit winners will need to record their permit number (which can be found online after the drawing) and report this permit number when tagging their deer. IFW suggests that Any-Deer Permit winners write down their permit number and keep the number with their license so it is readily available when needed at the tagging station. IFW decides how many permits to issue based on management goals for each district. Few or no

permits are granted in areas where deer populations are low. In areas where deer are more abundant, a larger number of permits are allocated. IFW also takes into account hunter success rates from previous seasons. There is no application fee to apply for the permit. Online applications and additional information about the program are available online at http:// www.maine.gov/ifw/licenses_permits/lotteries/ anydeer/index.htm. n

son grilled foods with these delicious herbs every night. My philosophy is that if you use herbs and spices to enhance the flavor of your food, you not only enhance your health but you also eliminate the use of fats or butter, which only add unneeded calories. It’s not too late in the season for you to start your own herb garden. Some culinary herbs you can plant now, like dill, I’m told from one of the local nurseries, and many you can still find at various greenhouses. Choose herbs that not only taste good but also add specific health benefits for your needs. Here are just a few of the common alignments and herbs that heal. For a cold or sore throat, use basil or sage. Bothered with arthritis, try celery, garlic, nutmeg, pepper and sage. For memory enhancement, use rosemary and basil, which are also good for circulation. If you are sometimes bothered with headaches or migraines, try clove, ginger or Indian hemp. Trouble

sleeping? Use aniseed, celery, cumin, nutmeg, hemp or poppy seed. If you are bothered with stomach issues and acidity, try aniseed, caraway seed, celery, cloves, cinnamon, cumin, ginger, rosemary or turmeric. Last, but not least, every garden needs parsley. Parley is a great garnish, it smells nice, and if you eat it, you can reap the benefits of ridding your body of waste products and strengthening the kidneys. It also provides a good source of potassium for you folks who tend to sweat a lot in the summer heat. If you are new to herbs, a word of caution, while most herbs have little or no harmful effects, some may cause an undesirable reaction in certain individuals. Just experiment with one herb at a time if it is new to you. Happy planting. n Live Long, Live Well. Jodi R. Cornelio Personal Trainer, Nutritionist

Movie Review: Public Enemies in this performance than in this summer’s Terminator: Salvation though I still prefer him as Batman. I don’t know how many Oscar nominations it might get, though I’m sure it can be debatable among the fans and critics. However, I don’t think it’s the Oscar-caliber film it could be. If you’re expecting some Oscar-worthiness out of this film, you’re not gonna find much of it. Still if I were to nominate this film in any way, I might give it Best Actor, Best Art Direction, and Best

The new movie Public Enemies is an intense action-packed drama set during the era of the Great Depression when people became desperate and crime became a part of everyday life. Among the great heroes of law breakers from that era is John Dillinger, who was dubbed “Public Enemy No. 1” by the F.B.I. Now the film paints a stunning portrait of Dillinger’s exploits, and the lawmen that worked hard to capture the elusive outlaw. In 1933, John Dillinger (played by Johnny Depp) was already a formidable figure in crime alongside other famous foes as “Baby Face” Nelson (played by Stephen Graham) and “Pretty Boy” Floyd (played by Channing Tatum). After Dillinger makes tons of money in robberies and engineers various escapes from prison, J. Edgar Hoover (played by Watchmen’s Billy Crudup) puts F.B.I. Agent Melvin Purvis (played by Christian Bale) in charge of a special division to catch Dillinger. Meanwhile, Dillinger begins dating the beau-

tiful Billie Frechette (played by Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard) and starts giving her the time of her life, including gifts and travel. But with Purvis hot on his trail at every moment, Dillinger has to find a way to stay one step ahead, which leads to one confrontational moment after another. This film is directed by Michael Mann, and he understands how to make the action part of a great story. If you’ve seen one of his best efforts, the 1995 film Heat, which has one of the greatest shootout scenes ever made, he puts you in the middle of the scene and it makes you feel like you’re part of the action. The scene in Public Enemies where Dillinger is confronted by Purvis in the woods at night is very reminiscent of that scene. With bullets flying everywhere in surround sound, you get the feel of the intense excitement of the gun battle. The cast did their jobs with the spotlight pretty much owned by Johnny Depp. When it comes to playing eccentric characters on screen, Depp can

Costume Design. In the end, it is a pretty good Michael Mann-directed drama highlighted by an excellent Johnny Depp performance. It’s not great, but still entertaining. For those still shaken by the really fast, seizureinduced action of this summer’s biggest movie, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (an average sequel by the way), hopefully this film becomes a much more sophisticated viewing than seeing so much CGI eye candy. Final Rating: 3 Stars (Out of Four). n

do no wrong and no wonder he has become such a beloved Oscar-nominated actor. His performance here wonderfully mimics the real Dillinger as Depp becomes a cool and collected criminal with entertaining humor and drama. I look forward to more of

Depp’s performances, including playing the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland along with the possibility of playing Capt. Jack Sparrow in the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film. As for Christian Bale, I think he did a much better job

unlocked an opportunity to pick one of ten brand new cars. Mark chose a brand new Hyundai Sonota GLS. It couldn’t have come at a better time as Mark was keeping his car together with parts from many other cars. Rowe Auburn has been a proud business neighbor in Lewiston/Auburn and the surrounding communities for nearly 90 years and was excited to be a part of such an exciting event where one person drove away with a brand new car. “Everyone who does business at Rowe goes home a winner,” said sales manager Jake Anderson. “Especially right now with our Cash for Clunkers program.” Congratulations again to Mark Cable and happy motoring from Rowe Auburn. n

Over 1,000 men, women and children spanning 23 states and three Canadian provinces have registered to cycle, run or walk in The Dempsey Challenge, a fundraising event scheduled for October 4 at Simard-Payne Police Memorial Park in Lewiston. Registrations are ongoing and will be accepted through the morning of the event. Participants may choose one of four cycling routes (10, 25, 50 or 100 miles) or a 5K (3.1 mile) run/walk. The event’s namesake: actor, Maine native and avid cyclist, Patrick Dempsey, is scheduled to take part in the festivities along with pro cyclists George Hincapie, a five-time Olympian and David Zabriskie, a Tour de France record holder for fastest time

trial. The event’s Festival in the Park will provide fun for the whole family with a Health and Wellness Expo, KidZone, lobster bake, live entertainment, health screenings and more. "We are thrilled with the response we have received for The Challenge and are very optimistic we will reach our goal of 3,000 participants,” said event manager Wendy Tardif. “There is a lot of excitement around forming teams with co-workers, family and friends and raising money that will directly affect cancer survivors and their families everywhere.” Funds will benefit the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center which

provides free support, education and wellness services to cancer patients and caregivers. Dempsey created the Center in response to his mother’s multiple bouts with ovarian cancer. In its first year, the Center had over 6,000 direct patient contacts and served over 2,000 on its toll-free cancer helpline. Through the Challenge, the star of TV’s Grey’s Anatomy hopes to raise cancer awareness and promote healthy lifestyles. Participants are encouraged to create or join teams to build camaraderie and assist their fundraising efforts. Among the 116 registered teams, four have raised over $4,000 thus far. Although the event offers fundraising incentives, no fundraising minimum is required to participate. More information, including registration tools, route maps and a fundraising toolkit, is available at www.dempseychallenge. org. n

FIND THE PHONY AD contest! There’s a good reason why you didn’t always play ‘dress up’ with your friends on Saturdays. His name was Dad. With him, even yard work was fun. And while you’ve idolized Dad your entire life, you’ll want to celebrate these times after his death. A meaningful funeral allows you to grieve and say goodbye, as well as remember and laugh. It’s a significant celebration that honors Dad. One that in many ways, is also for you. Contact your local NFDA member, who knows the value of creating a meaningful funeral service.

The Charming Chipmunk

Carleen Cote Chipmunks are probably the most charming animals in the woodland. They can be spotted near bird feeders, stone walls or woodpiles, are extremely industrious and spend most of their time collecting and storing food in their burrows. You may hear a continuous birdlike chirp from a chipmunk when it feels threatened. A chipmunk can often be seen filling its pouches, which are located in its cheeks, and running to a burrow to empty its pouches by pushing on them with their paws. They'll store more food than they need in the event a thief chipmunk is brave enough to enter another's burrow. Chipmunks are somewhat territorial and will chase away intruders. They are also solitary, except during the spring mating season Only six inches long and weighing 1 to 5 ounces, when they run, their three-to-four-inch tails are straight up. The chipmunk spends a lot of time in its burrow, which it has either dug itself or found vacated. The burrow can be 10 to 30 inches underground, 6 to 8 inches high and 12 inches in diameter. The animal will start digging a burrow as a working tunnel and dirt will be seen at the entrance of the working tunnel - but the actual entrance has no dirt around it. When the site of the entrance hole is finally selected, the chipmunk will

dig backward, moving the dirt to the working tunnel. This is done as protection from predators. The female will carry leaves and soft grasses to build a nest where she will sleep, give birth and hibernate. Chipmunks are true hibernators. Their body temperature and breathing rate fall as they start to hibernate. However, there are exceptions to every rule - some hibernate for short periods, some may not hibernate at all! And this can change from year to year. They mate from February to April and June to July, having two litters a year, consisting of three to seven babies. At birth, the babies are tiny, blind and hairless, with reddish skin. At two weeks, they have fuzzy hair, at three weeks they can hear, and at about four weeks, their eyes open. The female stays constantly with her young, leaving the nest only briefly. At six weeks, the young start venturing from the burrow to explore; and, at the tender young age of eight weeks, the female chases them away - never to let them return. They must find their own areas and start digging their own burrows. In the wild, a chipmunk lives only two to three years. We have cared for very few chipmunks over our 45 years of rehab. Since they are born underground, they are rarely found at an age when they are dependent on humans for care. Those we have received have been wounded by predators and, if they survived, were released right here at the Center. NOTE: Carleen and Donald Cote operate the Duck
