There is nothing better than to start the day aiming high, so why not choose Spain’s highest peak at 3,718 metres above sea level. Mount Teide National Park is home to locations and species that you will not find anywhere else on the planet, such as the Mount Teide Violet or the Tajinaste. Right at the foot of Mount Teide lies the Valley of Ucanca. A significant part of the filming took place within the limits of the park due to the highly unusual characteristics of its lunar landscapes.

Tour “Clash of the titans”

It is possible to reach the park along a number of roads, either from the north (TF-24 from San Cristóbal de La Laguna or TF-21 from La Orotava) or from the south of the island (TF21 from Granadilla or TF-38 from Chío). If you start from San Cristóbal de La Laguna, a university city and a World Heritage Site (a visit to the historical centre is a must.

Tour “Clash of the titans”

There are guided visits offered free of charge from the main tourist information office1, driving up TF-24, you will come to the village of La Esperanza, where, if you are lucky enough to be there at the weekend or on a public holiday, you will be able to stop at the “farmer’s market”2 and supply yourself with the best produce of the land”:

In the scene of the film in which Perseus and the group of warriors leave Argos, on their way to seek out the Stygian Witches, there is a spectacular image of the sea of clouds, shot only a few kilometres away from these viewing points.

On the drive up the TF-24, you will find two of the best viewing points on the Island: Ortuño and Chipeque. They are both in the upper part of the pine forest, which means that just beneath, on many days in the year, you can enjoy a natural spectacle that we really recommend to you: the sea of clouds. 1 Casa Alvarado Bracamonte. C/ La Carrera, 7 2 Farmer’s Market of La Esperanza: Carretera General, Kilometre 7.8. Opening hours: Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays: 8.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.

¿Sabías que…? La limpieza del cielo de Tenerife y sus condiciones climatológicas, le permiten tener uno de los observatorios de estrellas más importantes del mundo.

Further on, with the Izaña Observatory and its wealth of modern telescopes for viewing the sun and the stars so as to discover new phenomena in the universe, already behind you, you come to El Portillo at the crossroads with TF-21, which you can also reach by driving up through La Orotava. At El Portillo, there is a visitors’ centre, which offers you all kinds of information about the Mount Teide National Park, and a small museum on the geology, flora and fauna of the park itself. If you have any doubts about the locations where the film was shot, you can get information from this centre.

Tour “Clash of the titans”

Due to the clarity of the skies and the peculiarities of our climate, this is the ideal area for lovers of astronomy to observe the stars. According to the time of year, the constellations of Andromeda and Cassiopeia or Perseus and Pegasus, will be waiting for you to discover them. Tour “Clash of the titans”

Continuing along TF-21, in the direction of Mount Teide, you can appreciate the stunning views of lunar landscapes caused by the different lava flows in the area. Observing this landscape, you will feel like a human being in the times of the Gods. In this part, at the Mines of San José, after passing Montaña Mostaza, you will be able to stop your car and take a walk around the location where Perseus and the group of warriors fought with the enormous scorpions. From there, you will be able to take superb photos of the area.

Further along the road, to your right, there is the cable car that you can take to enjoy the best views of all. It will leave you only two hundred metres from the peak. In order to go to the very top of the mountain, it is necessary to get a permit, which you can apply for at the offices of the National Park, which are currently in the city of Santa Cruz3. And, if you want to feel like the gods in Clash of the Titans, you can spend the night on Mount Teide and watch the sun come up from the peak. For this purpose, you have to spend the night at the Altavista Refuge, located at 3,270 metres above sea level (a pathway of medium-tohigh difficulty), from which there is another footpath which leads you to the peak. It is necessary to make a reservation at the offices of the mountain refuge4.

Tour “Clash of the titans”

A little further on, you will come to the Parador Nacional (State-Owned Hotel) and Roques de García. Behind the Parador, only 15-20 minutes away along a footpath, known as “Las siete Cañadas”, there is the Cañada del Capricho, the spot where the group of warriors set up camp after the battle with the giant scorpions. At this point, you might decide to have an aperitif at the Parador5 – where indeed you could also stay the night – or simply take a walk around the Roques de García, where you have sensational views of the Ucanca Valley. This location, together with the Cañada del Capricho, is especially attractive for lovers of climbing and hill-walking.

Tour “Clash of the titans”

Leaving the Parador Nacional behind you and continuing along the road which runs alongside the Valley of Ucanca, you will reach the crossroads of TF-21 and TF-38, Boca Tauce. There is a viewing point, just before you come to the crossroads, on the right, from where you can see the lava flows from the Pico Viejo and a magnificent panorama with Mount Teide in the background. A landscape of the “forbidden world” where Perseus and the group of warriors fought against demons and terrible beasts. Continuing along the TF-38, in the direction of Chío–Guía de Isora, you will again see the sea of clouds with the islands of La Gomera and La Palma in the background. You will go through the Chío pinewoods and you will be at the centre of the battle between Perseus and the beast, Calibos (the old king, Acrisius).

13

Tour “Clash of the titans”

On the left hand side of the road is the Chio recreation site, where you can stop and enjoy a short rest, with the option of having a picnic and enjoying the Forest Crown Nature Park. The images of Perseus, with Calibos in hot pursuit, will be running riot in your imagination. From this point on, you will have different options as you follow in the footsteps of Perseus:

Tour “Clash of the titans”

Take the TF-82 road, in the direction of Chío and Tamaimo, and then take the TF-454, and go down to the port of Los Gigantes, where you can enjoy the spectacular views of the Los Gigantes Cliffs and even have a swim at the mouth of the Masca Ravine, the “bay” of the city of Argos, where some boats will anchor and allow their guests to enjoy the crystalline waters of the area. You will feel the reverberations of the final battle of the Kraken against Perseus. Apart from the cliffs, you will also be able to appreciate another of the privileges that Tenerife offers you: observing free-living whales at any time of year and only a few miles from the coast. And the fact is that off the coast of Tenerife there are highly significant marine ecosystems with the result that there is a permanent colony of pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins, as well as many other species such as the loggerhead turtle. This is an experience that we warmly recommend to you because there are few places in the world where you can see these mammals so close to you, 365 days a year and, the best part, in your swimming costume while you enjoy a pleasant boat trip. There are three departure points: Los Cristianos (Arona), Puerto Colón (Adeje) and Los Gigantes*. 15 Más información en Infoturismo Tenerife: 00 800 100 101 00

Take the TF-375 road to the village of Arguayo and make a stop at the Cha-Domitila craftwork centre6, which is a traditional building showing the evolution of the products of the Guanches (the ancient inhabitants of the Canary Islands) and there is a tribute to the last few craftsmen and women of the area. Continue towards Santiago del Teide and turn right at the crossroads with TF-82. In the centre of Santiago del Teide, at the weekend, you can pay a visit to the farmer’s market7 and buy some local produce: honey, wine, bread, basketry, etc.

6 Cha-Domitila craftwork centre: Carretera General, 39. Phone: 922 863 465 7 Santiago del Teide: Saturday and Sunday from 8.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.

Tour “Clash of the titans”

Right opposite the central square in the village (where the church is), there is a small road, the TF-436, which will take you to Masca, one of the best conserved hamlets on the island. From the village itself, it is possible to observe the breathtaking Masca Ravine, at the bottom of which the city of Argos was recreated. If you continue along TF-436 towards Buenavista del Norte, going past El Palmar, you will find another farmer’s market, this time in Buenavista8. Once you are in Buenavista you can decide to head for Punta de Teno. Observe the signs and advice as on occasions there may be rock falls, which makes access difficult along this road.

This road leads to the Teno lighthouse. Here too there are marvellous views of the Los Gigantes cliffs from a different perspective, which were a location for a number of scenes in the film. From here you can also see the northern coast of Tenerife, where a number of scenes involving the sea were shot such as the destruction of the statue of Zeus, which took place in the municipal district of Icod de los Vinos.

8 Buenavista farmer’s market (Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.).

Tour “Clash of the titans”

Take the TF-82 road, in the direction of Guía de Isora, and go down the TF-463 towards Playa San Juan. Outside the mole of this little port, a number of scenes with the sea as the horizon were shot. From the south-west coast of the island, other scenes at sea were shot. This is a good place to try the local fish. Playa San Juan, Alcalá or Los Gigantes are just a few of the possibilities and, of course, do not forget to have a pleasant swim at one of the beaches.

18

Tour “Clash of the titans

You will be able to enjoy quiet sunsets in this area such as the one that was shot for one of the final scenes of the film.

For active tourism enthusiasts, there is the possibility of combining the Titans Tour with hill-walking: the network of footpaths of the Mount Teide National Park, or those of the National Park of the Forest Crown or the Teno Rural Park; with a dive (at Adeje, Arona or in Santiago del Teide there are numerous diving clubs which offer this option); surfing, windsurfing or kitesurfing (at El Medano, Los Cristianos or Costa Adeje; or paragliding, with different take off points along the central ridge of the island.

The movie

Synopsis In “Clash of the Titans, the ultimate struggle for power pits men against kings and kings against gods. But the war between the gods themselves could destroy the world. Born of a god but raised as a man, Perseus (Sam Worthington) is helpless to save his family from Hades (Ralph Fiennes), vengeful god of the underworld. With nothing left to lose, Perseus volunteers to lead a dangerous mission to defeat Hades before he can seize power from Zeus (Liam Neeson) and unleash hell on earth. Perseus sets off on a perilous journey deep into forbidden worlds, leading a daring band of warriors, including Draco (Mads Mikkelsen), an experienced soldier who encourages the defiant Perseus to make use of his god-given abilities. Battling unholy demons and fearsome beasts, they will only survive if Perseus can accept his power as a god, defy his fate and create his own destiny.
