he law of attraction has proven that negativity brings on negativity. Prior to starting this magazine, I continuously found myself surrounded in harmful environments with turmoil and corrupt results. It took many years, but my inner spirit led me to realize that the epitome of who I really wanted to be was a more positive person. At that very point, I transformed my life, mindset, direction, and energy into creating a platform for communicating positive information. The Trendsetters to Trendsetters magazine is that platform. The concept of the magazine began eight years ago. Our mission is to educate, inspire, support, and produce positive mindsets, to motivate people across the globe. Through the content in T2T magazine, our audience can absorb knowledge, and study the success of established and upcoming trendsetters and game changers. T2T’s goal is to encourage self-development, community support, higher education, purposeful living, and to stimulate and motivate our readers to be the best that they can be. As we move into the holiday season, I begin to reflect on what I am thankful for. While a number of things come to mind, one of the most important things on my list is “you.” You have played a critical role in the success of this magazine. Through your support of our mission, your knowledge and strategies for success, and the compelling stories you’ve shared, T2T magazine is eight years strong. T2T magazine is your voice. Use it to your advantage. It is a tool for success!!! ■

lthough I’m not a fan of Newt Gingrich, I do admire a quote he made. He said, “Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did.” Personally I feel that a portion of not quitting easily exists in all of us. It’s just for some people, it needs to be awakened. While growing up, athletics played an important part of my life. Football and baseball was a part of every summer season. I was fortunate to compete in the Little League World Series, win of two high school football State Championships and three high school State Championships in track and field. (Shout out to S.U. Lab, Baton Rouge, La.) Being part of an elite organization took determination, persistence and a desire to be the best. Those elements, along with great parenting, coaching, combined with encouraging instructors and dedicated teammates helped me become the person I am today. I was short in stature but as a football player, I managed to perform at a position normally awarded to taller players. I became a wide receiver. Fast forwarding to present day, I reflect on Trendsetters to Trendsetters Magazine. It has been a hard fought battle and we as a publication still manages to exist and flourish, not just in the Atlantabased area but in communities all over the country. Our desire to expose positive people doing positive things in their communities holds strong as much today, as it did during the inception over eight years ago. Perseverance is the word that comes to mind when I think about publisher, Willie Stewart and this great publication. Despite obstacles, setbacks, disappointments and broken promises, he still perseveres and hold fast to his vision for T2T. As trendsetters, we have an obligation to ourselves and others to press on, even through tough times, so that others may be blessed. Please continue to support us as we continue to persevere towards excellence. Press on! ■

The hour-long series takes a humorous look at Smiley’s hectic life as he manages his career, single fatherhood and personal life. TV One’s Rickey Smiley For Real is a voyeuristic view into what makes Smiley a successful media mogul in radio, comedy and television, as well as captures the syndicated host as he juggles two families – one at home and the other at work. Throughout the season, viewers get a sneak peek at Smiley’s most important role – fatherhood – as he keeps his head above water with an untraditional schedule and lifestyle. They will see Smiley in both relatable and unrelatable situations – cooking dinner, performing on stage, family outings, business meetings, raising his kids, celebrity dates and coaching coworkers – as well as get an insider’s look at his professional life on the road, in-studio and backstage. Splitting his time between Atlanta and Birmingham, as well as his struggle to find work-life balance while trying to maintain a love life will be a central focus of the series. oshua’s start in music was the result of many factors, including how he was raised. His dad was not in his life at all, and his mom did all she could to give him the best possible life, including sending him to the best schools. Although he grew up in the suburbs, and attended some of the best schools, he still faced many issues that could have caused him to stumble. Pressured to join gangs and often bullied to the point of tears, Joshua experienced physical abuse by other students. One day, while in the 5th grade, Joshua was introduced to music. He tried the cello first, then the viola, and finally the violin - all in a matter of minutes. He immediately fell in love with string instruments over the wood wind and brass instruments. He developed an instant love for music, and found it was an escape from the abuse and bullying at school. He felt in his heart that he really wanted to play music. Even though he wasn't very good in the beginning. Joshua loved playing music on his violin. When he first started playing, no one believed in him except his mom and his orchestra director, Ms. Proniv. Most of his peers said that he would be nothing but a “fat loser.” Joshua’s mom was his biggest supporter and promised him he could be anything he wanted to be. She introduced him to sports and he tried soccer, football, and was a blue belt in tae kwon do. However, music was his calling, and gift from God. Joshua and his mom eventually relocated to Twinsburg, Ohio a place that she felt would be better for him. The move was difficult as Joshua broke his ankle for the second time the day before they moved, and was unable to help his mom with the move. He was incapacitated, causing him to start the school year without making any friends. The head of the orchestras for the Twinsburg Schools, Mr. Conn, waited for Joshua in the hallway on his first day of school, and encouraged him. Joshua didn't

14

think he was any good, and not being so good, meant he was in the back of the violin section. During his transition to high school, Joshua went through several violin teachers, and eventually had to teach himself because he had such a love for the instrument. His mom encouraged him to be the best he could be, and to utilize the gift that God gave him. However, she had to have major surgery, which meant they didn't have money for violin lessons. The move to Twinsburg proved to be the best thing that could have ever happened to Joshua and his career as a violinist. Mr. Conn was a major influence for him and introduced him to more things in music than he could ever imagine. There were years of constant competitions, concerts and auditions. His freshman year he failed every audition and felt like an utter disgrace as a violinist. The next year he was very determined, and soared to the top of his game. He was principal violinist of his section and scored superior ratings in all of his competitions. He was a leader and feeling God's blessing with his gift in music. Today, Joshua is a senior and proud to be a member of the Contemporary Youth Orchestra. He auditioned for and made the North Eastern Region Orchestra, and was the first black to be named the Concert Master of the Twinsburg High School Orchestra! He didn't think he could be Concert Master, but his mom knew differently. She knew he could do it and said "Josh, I want Concert Master," and he gave her just that. He is also a straight “A” student and has over 3 years of perfect attendance. Joshua is preparing for auditions for college scholarships focusing on staying in Ohio. Ashland University and Bowling Green State University are his first choices but he will go wherever he’s granted a scholarship. His plan is to major in Computer Science Engineering and minor in Music. But, he’s leaving it all in the hands of God. ■

The AUDELCO Awards are held annually in November in New York City. AUDELCO is still alive and thriving thanks to its president, Grace L. Jones, and others. At just 13, Colby was labeled a formidable “triple threat” nationally and internationally. To her credit, she has accomplished many “firsts” in the arts and academia, and is the recipient of many awards, citations, proclamations, and honors as a professional dancer, actress, singer, model, choreographer and motivational speaker. She has been studying at the Restoration Center for Arts and Culture since the age of two. As an honor student, Colby will complete high school at the age of 16, and prides herself on academic excellence. What is most amazing about Colby’s story is not only that she received the most prestigious award in Black Theater, but that she achieved all of this (and more) before the tender age of 13. Standing before a packed theater, Colby gave a riveting acceptance speech which will forever be noted in the AUDELCO and Entertainment World Archives. She stated, “Thank you for keeping black theatre alive. To all those whose shoulders that I stand on, I am ready to work, ready to achieve and ready to rise. So call me!" Changing the Mindset– From Rich to Wealth! Brentley Enterprise, LLC --

Jeremy Burris and Brian Gray By Kimberly Cross

I

ts not often you find two 20year old young men that truly understand economics in the way Jeremy Burris and Brian Gray have. Totally disturbed by the disproportionate number of black millionaires in the US, Jeremy and Brian have decided instead of making excuses for this inequity, they will make a difference. Using the knowledge they have gained through research, these young men have decided to create programs under their LLC, Brentley Enterprises, in hopes to eventually open the nation’s first African American Entrepreneurship Leadership Academy. This will be a school whose core values will center on young men obtaining sustainable wealth opportunities for themselves. “We want to help young people learn how to be innovative and think,” says Burris. “Teach them to use proven strategies to create business ideas to positively impact our community and people.” Brentley Enterprise, LLC, currently in its incubation stage, plans to start their quest for change by starting with a 3 day/ 6 week pilot program in Charlotte, that will begin to get young people fired up about “owning their own wealth—and creating their own businesses.” By using the resources from like-minded people and partner organizations, this program will help change the mindset of our young people, being able to distinguish between being rich and being wealthy. “We want to ultimately resurrect a ‘modernized’ Black Wall Street, modeling that of Tulsa Oklahoma before 1921!” says Burris. “We want to help Jeremy and Bryan are both able to recite statistics that young people they want to combat. “With high school graduation rates for black males plummeting –and the school to prison learn how to be pipeline ever so prevalent, Brentley Enterprise is ready to innovative and respond.” “Owning only 7% of US businesses is just not good enough! We truly must change the narrative and think,” says mentor our young men into success, and really show them Burris. what wealth and success looks like.” These two young men have a true passion for making a change. After talking for over an hour, it is evident they have done their homework and are ready to start a program where their mentorship can yield the transformation of lives. Not only teaching black young men about the power of money and what it takes to be an entrepreneur—but, teaching them how transfer that power to navigate society. “When you hear about African American communities you only hear about unemployment, poverty and crime—which often overshadows the more positive trends in the community. We want an entrepreneurial mindset to be the new “sports league or record label deal,” … where everyone wants one!” “It starts with us!” says these two. “Individuals make families, families make communities and communities make change, we must insert ourselves into this mix and be that change for Charlotte and the world!” ■

Top Reasons to Oil Your Scalp

any consumers have asked me these questions…Do I need to oil my scalp? I have heard that it clogs your scalp? What should I use when my scalp is dry? Here is a Trichologist’s prospective of oiling the scalp. When there is a scalp malady/condition, yes you need to address your scalp. African American’s have approximately 90,000-140,000 sweat glands. When the sweat dries, it leaves a film or residue on the scalp, which is sodium buildup. This sodium buildup is not removed or cleansed from the scalp, in many cases, as often as it should. Many consumers neglect shampooing their hair and scalp for 3-4 weeks, or longer, to hold on to a trendy hairstyle. Sometimes it is laziness. This will result in dry hair, dry scalp, an excessively itchy scalp which leads to tender scalps, erythema, inflammation, and irritation just to name a few. This is when oiling of the scalp and hair becomes routine after shampooing. On the other hand, there are some consumers who have overactive sebaceous glands, where their scalp produces more oil. Frequency of shampooing should become common practice. In addition, in the Indian community, I have several clients who share with me about applying oil to their scalp and hair for shine and hair regrowth. Lastly, many natural hairstylists will instruct their client who wear twists, and locks to postpone shampooing their hair and scalp for 6-8 weeks to preserve their style. I DISAGREE with this recommendation when there is a scalp condition. The scalp condition needs to be addressed first, then the trendy hairstyle second. More professionals need to realize this important fact. ■

Why use Dr. Amerson’s Anti-Itch Soothing Oil? It was exclusively formulated by Dr. Amerson. Some of the benefits include:

Offset dryness from sodium buildup Pruritus of the scalp Scalp diseases Scalp lesions Soothing an irritated scalp Scaly scalp conditions Dry scalp conditions

Carmen has taught classes at Next Level Fitness and Training, the Far East Recreation Center, and LA Fitness centers, where she serves as a certified cycling instructor. Her students and colleagues affectionately refer to her as Cardio Carmen. This indicative of her highenergy and drive that she demonstrates during her dance fitness, cycling, and boot camp classes, where her enthusiasm and tenacity for greatness are contagious. During the summer months and after school, she provides fitness classes to youth at the Center for New Directions, the King Arts Complex, and the Eldon and Elise Ward YMCA. Through her motivational speaking engagements, Carmen often talks about her passion to help young adults and youth fight obesity through exercise, healthy food choices, and eating in moderation. Some of her presentations include, speaking to more than 1500 High School Students during the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) conference. She also speaks to staff and administrators at JP Morgan Chase, and

various youth groups and organizations. She learned early on that food choices and eating in moderation are important when competing in bodybuilding championships. With that thought in mind, Carmen came with a vengeance in May 2015 as she prepared for her first competition in Columbus, Ohio. She secured a fourth place spot in the Masters Bikini competition, NPC Mike Francois Bodybuilding Championship. She didn’t stop there. In June 2015, she traveled to Dayton, Ohio where she competed in the Julie Palmer Championship. She walked away with another 4 th place win in the Open competition and a 5th place spot at the Masters level. In September 2015, Cardio Carmen traveled to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to compete in the IFBB North American Championships. It was her first national level competition, but she proved to be a serious competitor. She left with a 4th place trophy out of a field of 1,600 competitors. Carmen was pleased with her fourth-place spot but believed first place had a nicer ring to it. So in October 2015 during the NPC Natural Kentucky Championships, she left with 4 trophies: overall winner, in the Bikini Division(35+); Ffrst-place winner, in the Bikini Division - Class A (35+), third-place winner, Novice Bikini; and finally, fourth- place winner in the Open Bikini Division. Be sure to watch for Carmen beginning in January 2016, during her first one minute commercial called “Cardio Carmen’s One Minute Fitness Tips,” on Bounce TV. ■

t is inevitable that everyone will die one day. Human beings are mortal. Everyone is subject to death. Many have asked, “When will I die?” According to the bible, “the years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty..” (Psalm 90:10). Then the followup question is, “How will I die?” Even with cancer, murder, and vehicular deaths on the rise, people have more control over “the how and when” than they realize. There’s a preventable method of dying that has increased at a substantial rate over the past few years: eating too much! Americans are dying at an alarming rate from overeating. Most would rather sugar coat this statement because it’s too hard to grasp that someone can actually die from eating too much. Therefore, if you want to put a little sugar on it (which is in itself unhealthy), it is politically correct to say that people are dying from obesity-related complications. A prime example of the effects of this epidemic is the increase in the eating of junk food. Grab bags of chips, sodas and candy bars are stocked at every checkout line, vending machine, and corner store. Eating junk food alone is one of the main contributing factors to the development of certain cancers. The body desires and needs certain vitamins and minerals to function properly. However, when you eat a poor diet, you severely impair the body’s ability—its immune system—to fight off toxins and diseased cells. As a result, those cells can become cancerous. It’s just like playing dominos without a winner. Eating too much of the wrong foods lead to obesity, obesity leads to other medical conditions such as heart problems, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. Unfortunately, these conditions

30

can ultimately lead to a preventable death. Therefore, overeating is literally killing people. Type II Diabetes and heart disease has increased and surprisingly asthma has been at the top of the list. One in 3 Americans born after 2000 will contract Diabetes. The number is lowered to 1 in 2 in minorities. Who would choose to die like this? According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 300,000 adult deaths in the United States each year are attributable to unhealthy dietary habits and physical inactivity or sedentary behavior. It is time for all people to adopt a 3-E plan of action to live a more active and healthy life. The 3 E’s are: EDUCATE, EAT WISE, AND EXERCISE. It is important to educate yourself on the risks taken when you choose to eat the wrong foods. Find out your personal need for the intake of vitamins, minerals, and water. After you do your research and consult with your doctor, eat the right foods and get moving. It’s simple, it’s realistic, and it’s a lifestyle change.■ Camela Douglass, M.S. ho would have thought a small transistor radio would play such an integral role in shaping the success and career of media giant—Cathy Hughes. Her name is synonymous with the word radio, and for 35 years and counting, Hughes has been the voice and face of Radio One–with the story of her life still playing tunes of progression, passion and purpose. Cathy Hughes always felt at home behind the microphone, and her confidence and competence in radio landed her very first position at KOWH radio station, in Omaha. Her early success paved the way to our nation’s capitol, where she was appointed assistant to the Dean of Communications,

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015

and lecturer at Howard University. Taking her talents back to radio full-time, Hughes took on the General Sales Manager position at WHUR—leaving her mark as the brains behind the “Quiet Storm” radio program, which is said to have revolutionized urban radio. In 1980, Hughes and her husband decided to purchase their own radio station, WOL 1450. She realized going in that the odds were slim, and this journey would be far from a walk in the park. In baseball, we would call it an OUT, for she had three strikes against her – she was black—she was a woman –and she wanted to do talk/news radio! But, Hughes beat the odds, because she did not listen to the “naysayers,” nor allow them to influence her direction towards

the pursuit of happiness. Hughes would not let anyone “deny” her destiny, and remained relentless and resilient in the face of countless bank denials, until she finally heard three magical words from a venture capital firm called Syndicated Commu-

nications—“Yes, with conditions.” The late Herb Wilkins, founder of Syndicated Communications, wanted to protect his company’s investment, so he made Hughes secure a loan guarantee from the Small Business Association (SBA). Although she initially looked at this agreement with disdain, Hughes had no choice but to comply, and soon found it to be one of the best ‘reluctant relationships’ she could ever have. She was versed in the world of radio, yet green to the world of business, and the SBA embraced Hughes and her business, acting more as a “big brother” than an outside entity. To her surprise, they provided mentorship and business strategies that saved her money, and possibly the life of her business. Don’t get it wrong, the procurement and backing of a 15 million dollar loan did not promise or guarantee profit margins or overnight success. There were times when the radio station doubled as living quarters, “but those were sacrifices that I had to make to keep the business afloat,” Hughes says. You would never hear her complain because in Hughes’ mind, this was her calling. There were even times she couldn’t affo rd to p ay “herself,” but the opportunity to give a “voice to the voiceless” was payment enough! Her mother would tease her, saying, she made “broke look good.” One thing for sure, despite her company’s hardships and capital shortfalls, Hughes made sure to take care of her employees first! “In 35 years …I am proud to say, I have never missed a payroll or bounced a business check!” When asked what she would attrib-

ute to her company’s success, Hughes could not pinpoint one thing, but admittedly named three. Two of those are Syndicated Communications and SBA. The other is her son Alfred Liggins, III, who is now carrying the torch as CEO and President of Radio One and TV One dualistically. Telling Cathy’s story is like telling Alfred’s story, for he has been by his mother’s side through it all. No wonder he seems to embody many of his mother’s attributes—her grit, strongwill, persistence, and response to the word No! “To Alfred,” Hughes explains, “the word NO just means I haven’t provided enough information for you to make the right decision. Therefore, it doesn’t mean NO,” she laughs, “it just means NOT YET!” As only a loving mother-employer could, Hughes proudly shared with us several stories about Alfred, which gave us a glimpse of his journey through the ranks. Going from commission to management –from management to President, Liggins proved immediately that he had what it took to be an effective leader. The most compelling story was that of Alfred’s first power move and executive decision to change the company name from AL MIC Broadcasting to Radio One. Hughes, learning of the

name change from the Washington Post, immediately asked Alfred to explain why he made such a decision. He explained that he, his stepbrother, and Hughes’ husband at the time, found the combination of the sons’ names (Alfred and Michael) to be “hokey,” non-inclusive, and providing no room for growth and expansion. Who would have thought that Alfred’s foresight and vision years later would help frame a branding umbrella of companies and subsidiaries—bearing One as the common denominator. Radio ONE, TV ONE, Interactive ONE, News ONE, and ONE Solution, are all companies that confirm this name change was both warranted and fitting! Each entity embodies excellence, making great strides to keep up with the ever-changing world of media through radio, television and now—the internet. “We make it our business to have people on our team that help us remain relevant and keep us in front of trends in the business. We have to stay true to our goals of forward progress, while enhancing our company’s (stakeholders) value,” Hughes says. Hughes states that the purpose of black media, radio in particular, is to create a direct connect to the community. “Although we have turned into a visual society—you know the #1 medium to reach black folks is still radio…We, currently

penetrate about 82% of African American homes daily (through all mediums), and we reach an audience of just about 28 million!” Those are impressive stats for a company that was once accused of being a “social settlement house that benefits black people.” Reminiscing on the ‘good old days’ and the life span of her career, Hughes says laughing, “I have been in business probably longer than most of my staff has been living.” She goes on to talk about memorable personalities like Melody Spann of Chicago and Frankie Crocker out of New York, to name a few. “I would like for us to return to personality driven local radio… for us to truly regain a relationship with communities, raise awareness to issues, and give back, because that’s what they are looking for!” Hughes unapologetically acknowledges the source of her being, and is known to start each year’s stakeholders meeting with a prayer. Not to be confused with religion, she articulates that her success is rooted from her spiritual core, her desire to give and her willingness to love. Despite her achievements and accolades, and her many “acknowledgements of firsts,” Hughes admits that she is only a vessel and says, “He takes ordinary people to do extraordinary things.”

We can be unapologetically black all day, every day.” Martin says that it is critically essential for us to address our issues, while not worrying about what others think about the African American community. “I make the point all the time that on TV One/NewsOne Now, we’re not a demographic, we’re the demographic. We focus on stories from our perspectives. When is the last time you saw a black General on CNN, ABC, NBC or CBS that wasn’t named Colin Powell? We are not a part of the conversation, we are the conversation.” Martin is also a former founding editor for Savoy Magazine and the former founding editor of BlackAmericaWeb.com. I asked him if he ever had any aspirations about running for political office. Martin told me that he thinks he’s much too honest to be a politician.

“I’ve had people approach me numerous times over the years. I’m not going to say what voters want. I will say what people need to hear. Voters don’t want a 100 percent truthful politician. MICHAEL COLYAR “Laughing But Very Serious” By Kimberly Cross

his appearance as Reverend Hubbard, and expressed his excitement of playing alongside Anthony Anderson –who he describes as “genius and generous,” and Tracie Ellis Ross as the “present day Lucille Ball.” “I was honored to be a part of this show, for I feel the writers are clever and do a fabulous job of telling the story of how real Black America “navigate the waters.” One thing for sure, his physical address has proved not to have separated his love for the city, where it all started! The desire to be an “agent of change” has ignited a fire in Colyar—prompting the production of a project. “Gunshots…helicopters and sirens...” are the resounding sounds on repeat in our inner-cities, and it is no secret this epidemic is hitting the comedian’s hometown the hardest. With a name so fitting, Colyar’s project, THE SOUNDTRACK OF LIFE, will be a 20minute animated film that will have lifelong impact using music and messaging to encourage our youth to “put the guns down” and stop the violence! Michael has already managed to rally support from some of Chicago’s hip-hop greats: DaBrat, GLC and Twister to name a few. These artists were eager to come on board to help shine light on the senseless killings and unmanageable gun violence across our nation. “We have to teach them,” says Colyar, “that they are more than what statistics would have them to be…we have to re-educate and show our children from where they came…a lineage of Kings and Queens –make them realize that they come from royalty, dammit! We have to be diligent in giving them examples and lessons to show them they are Powerful…they are Awesome …and they are Wonderful!” Colyar welcomes community support, expertise and experience to the ta-

ble—and is actively seeking financial support–“cause it does cost money to produce such a project”—laughing, but very serious! From what he calls the Kansas City Shuffle (a form of media diversion) to the inspiring details around his attendance of 10th Anniversary of the Million Man March— to finally his views on actually living to see a “Black Man” answer the door at the White House –I realized I was talking to more than just a comedian, …but to a humanitarian and social activist that just happens to be funny! Colyar is no stranger to hard work, and is currently involved in many projects that are near and dear to his heart! Make sure to stay tuned because his “King of Venice Beach” comedy special is in the making. How fitting, to return to the very place that made him the man he is today! Michael Colyar’s journey began when he packed up his 1967 Buick LaSabre, praying to make it to his destination! Along the way he has met a lot of people and accomplished many things. “Despite my success at the end of the day…” he explains, “I want people to remember me for my humor, talent and generosity!” Michael goes on to say that the real key is the “re-education” of our people, be it through comedy, music or social commentary –the end goal is to “win, win, win –loving our black skin!” ■

BVS—is a phrase millions of Americans use daily in text messages, emails and social media tweets…but, Michael Colyar the comedian, embodies this phrase as he manages to keep us laughing no matter what the subject. Just learning he had a gift to make people laugh on “Tuesday,” (lol) Michael Colyar –the actor, husband, father, friend, social activist and now producer, is staying pretty busy these days! A native of Chicago, Colyar is often known for his many roles over the years on television and the big screen. Some, however, feel he made his true footprint when he was crowned the winner of Star Search in 1990, where he proved his true liberality by donating half of his winnings to charity. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Redd Foxx, Lenny Bruce, and Eddie Murphy –Michael has definitely mastered the craft of being much more than a “funny man.” From Unit 909 to Area Code 213, Michael has well established himself in sunny California, with his beautiful wife and kids. Although he has not physically lived in Chicago for over 30 years, Colyar definitely hasn’t forgotten his humble beginnings. From making money 4 days a week doing comedy shows outside the Water Tower Place, to spending countless hours performing on Venice Beach, this comedian has always had something to say…and made you laugh saying it. Not shying away from the “hard subjects” –Michael’s often socially conscious comedic commentary and raw humor hits home. From racism to politics, and from police brutality to the “N” word…this comedian is genius in the way he makes us conscious of issues that make us think and laugh simultaneously. o, you are not seeing double—but you are seeing Damian and Jermaine Johnson, founders of No Grease! Inc., and twins who have managed to multiply their success in both the barber and business arena. Since 1997, respectfully known as “The Twins,” these brothers and entrepreneurs have surely made a name for themselves in Charlotte. However, No Grease! Inc. was not the beginning for The Twins entrepreneurial journey. This started as early as junior high, when they found themselves with a clothing and apparel company named Blackness, Inc. This urban line consisting of t-shirts, hats, jerseys and more, became popular in their hometown of Buffalo, New York. While Jermaine was busy designing, Damian focused on growing the company through sales and marketing. The Twins found themselves serving “double duty” by mastering the tonsorial (barbering) arts, while continuing to build their apparel line. Their formative business years have surely served them well, as currently No Grease! has four barbershops, including an exclusive men’s grooming lounge located at Time Warner Cable Arena, home of the Charlotte Hornets. From the Johnson C. Smith (JCSU) campus (No Grease! Mosaic) to some of the busiest malls in Charlotte (No Grease! Concord Mills and No Grease! Carolina Place), these establishments prove to be successful serving clients from all walks of life. The Johnson brothers, having twice the drive and motivation, are now the managing partners of two barber colleges, including Park West Charlotte, which boasts an enrollment of over 150 students. But, it doesn’t stop there, for they have expanded their campus brand of JCSU by opening a NeighborHOOD Café, a place to experience great food, drinks, and music. Today, the Johnson brothers have authored a book “Urbanpreneurship,” while also sharing their business knowledge, experience and story in a motivational business seminar, called “Beauty/Barbernomics.” No Grease! has been featured many times in the Charlotte Observer, Pride Magazine, Charlotte Post, Charlotte Business Journal and Creative Loafing, and has also been the recipient of numerous awards for civic and community involvement in Charlotte, North Carolina. On June 19th (Juneteenth), you will find the mayor and citizens of Buffalo, New York, celebrating Damian and Jermaine Johnson Day! How fitting for these two young entrepreneurs, who are truly living the freedom of their ancestors 150 years later! Look out for The Twins as they take their brand and brain to Georgia in December 2015, opening their fifth No Grease! location - proof positive that two minds are always better than one!■

e disappears as if Terry McMillan wrote his exit. Ducks between tall buildings and plays keep away down dark alleys but the shadows scare

him. He hears the heavy footsteps of his predator. Hot breath singes the back of his neck as the hairs commander to fear. So he runs. When you are scared you either run or you fight. He runs. He looks for a haven in between soft pink petals that die in the winter, yet give you temporary solace and sunshine. He sniffs the fragrances of purple flowers in a field knowing that they are too wild to tame. The enemy is near, too close for comfort. His breath is heavy yet faint - shallower than his heart after the day she left. Testosterone reminds him of his strength as the bravado permeates through his skin. He is now determined more than ever to win against the odds, so he chooses to fight. Man up. Real men protect their homes. His foundation has cracks because of shoddy workmanship and lack of needed repairs. He goes to his arsenal. A bunker filled with weapons of mass destruction. He is armored with bitterness, regret and a broken heart. Who needs a gun and ammunition when anger and pain has fueled wars since the Israelites left Egypt? He has all he needs to win this holocaust. But it isn’t enough. He could call in the cavalry, myriads of soldiers willing to help him defeat this Goliath, but he knows he will never sustain the enemies brigade…he has no choice. He is tired of running. Limp with dehydration, he reasons with himself that there is honor in admitting that you've been defeated. Maybe once captured, the enemy will see that he's been broken. Unreciprocated love wreaks more havoc than a lack of food and water. He prays that mercy is shown. And maybe his fragility won’t cause the injuries that leave so many of his counterparts with PTSD. He surrenders - waves a white flag - falls into her embrace and tries to love again.■

Within my name are two opposing persons; I took a little from both of my uncles.” As Dichotomy began writing, he started to recognize these contradictions within himself. Oftentimes he finds himself having opposing views on the same issue. This is contradictory… Dichotomy! There are no particular topics that Dichotomy favors. He doesn’t write unless it is something that he feels strongly about. One of his favorite pieces is “The Truth.” It is a poem that discusses chivalry and the importance of showing that there are still good men who are willing to make a relationship work. “Think for Yourself” is another favorite calling for females to take more responsibility in relationships. He shares, “If you stay in a bad relationship, you’ll never be able to find the person that is right for you.” His final favorite is titled “Vincent Maurice” which tells the story of how he chose the name Di-

incent Hockett was born in Nashville, Tennessee and made Atlanta, Georgia his home in 2002. He noticed that he had the gift of poetry around the age of ten. One evening in 2003 at a coffee house in Nashville, Vincent heard spoken word and fell in love with it! In 2005, ironically he started speaking at that same coffee house, and he still performs today! This ‘truth’ spoken word poet, that now uses the stage name Dichotomy, has no problem being real. His poetry cuts to the bone; it goes much deeper than the heart! When I listen to him, I hear life lessons, everyday realities, love, wisdom, instruction, truth… and yes, humor. The content of his spoken word has so much depth, yet it is so easy to grasp. The word Dichotomy means a division into two opposing parts. When asked why he uses that name he explains, “I was named after my uncles, Vincent, who is known to be a very traditional and religious person, and Mau-

chotomy. Being named after his two uncles, he took on different aspects of their personalities and grew into them both. Evolution of Dichotomy was his first CD released in 2007. In 2010, he challenged himself to do something that no other poet has done by releasing two separate albums at the same time titled, Not Just a Love Poet and The Other Side of the Story! During Hank Stewart’s 12th Annual White Linen Affair in 2013, he released The Best of Dichotomy with poems from previously released CD’s plus four unreleased poems. Currently, Dichotomy is participating in a spoken word play. He has an annual show in February for his birthday titled, “Aural Fixation”! This young man is busy creating his own poetry book, writing a stage play, and working on his next CD project, as he continues to perform his spoken word. Dichotomy is more than poetry. Not only is he one of Hank Stewart’s (Hank Stewart Foundation) mentees, but he also speaks at schools, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and to other groups. With his family, he started the Hockett/ Williamson Scholarship, named for his deceased mom and grandfather. This scholarship is for high school seniors that despite personal and academic challenges can now be accepted into college. He feels a personal obligation to empower. He continues to encourage by saying, “Words are extremely powerful! Continue to write and express yourself pushing the art form forward, because poetry changes lives; it changed mine!”■

go to Step 2. Step Two: Set up a working “business audit” session to review your business documents (contracts, leases, policies, etc.). Afterwards, you will have a better idea of the legal threats to you, personally, and to your business. Step Three: Create a billing plan or fee arrangement that covers the fees required to bring your operating documents up to par. Step Four: Develop an action plan to determine how, and how often, you need to interact with your attorney. Step Five: Manage the relationship. If you want your attorney to review documents, supply them in time for your attorney to review and respond to them. mall business owners often feel as though they cannot afford to hire a lawyer. Instead of consulting with an attorney before they make decisions and enter into agreements, they contact an attorney when there is an emergency - a lawsuit, a contract dispute, or an employee issue. As an attorney, I can tell you that it is usually more cost-effective to prevent a problem than it is to resolve one after the fact. Moreover, if cost is not your chief concern, I promise you that it is less stressful to prevent a problem (or reduce the legal consequences of one), than to wait until the situation is terrible. When it comes to defending your business’s interests and reputation, and maintaining a smooth-running operation, taking a proactive approach to legal matters will prove beneficial. An experienced attorney is an ally who can help you effectively steer your business towards success. A good attorney will ask the “What if . . .?” questions that you may not have thought of, and will help you prepare for a prosperous future. Calling an attorney only after problems occur, on the other hand, forces an organization to work defensively, while a proactive approach enables the organization to anticipate events and control its destiny. Preparing this way gives the business owner the ability to adapt and respond to a variety of business situations, and enables the owner to grow and prosper. Here are five steps that you can take to engage with an attorney. Step One: Arrange to meet with at least two attorneys to determine what each can do for you. Once you have found an attorney that you think is a good fit for you and your business,

here are certainly things that just don’t mix –like oil and water, toothpaste and orange juice, and glass houses and stones –but a combination here in Charlotte, that seems to “work out just fine,” is the name Herb and Felicia. These successful, loving and philanthropic Charlotteans definitely have the makings of a perfect mix! Like salt and pepper, Herb and Felicia Gray are seen around town as a team, and very seldom will you hear one name mentioned without the other. Collectively, this couple has proved they have what it takes to mix love and money!

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015

Being the parents of a beautiful baby girl, the Grays find themselves busy growing their personal businesses and careers, while finding time to give back! From local charities like 100 Black Men to The Harvey B. Gantt Center, the Grays are heavily involved in raising awareness and funds for worthy local programs. Known for their popular “happy hour” gatherings, annual holiday party, and golf tournaments, they make it their business to make giving “FUN!” Having raised well over a half -million dollars for charity, this power-couple is truly a blessing to many. The Gray’s most popular charitable event is the annual Gray Classic Golf Tournament, which they have been hosting since 2008. The mission of the Classic is to provide an avenue for young students to achieve higher education, network, and engage in mentorship programs. This couple also supports various causes in the community, like helping needy families and veterans, and donating to several local and state political campaigns. Collectively, Herb and Felicia have been awarded the Urban League of Central Carolinas Whitney M. Young award, the Good Scout Award by the Mecklenburg County Council Boy Scouts of America, University of North Carolina, Charlotte’s Black Alumni Chapter Excellence in Leadership Award and the Johnson C. Smith University Presidential Distinction Award. Herb is an entrepreneur, who owns Life Enhancement Services, a nationally accredited mental health agency headquartered in Charlotte –with additional offices in Georgia and Washington, D.C. He keeps “extra” busy serving on a number of boards for various organi-

zations and non-profits, including the Urban League of Central Carolinas, the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts & Culture, the Harris YMCA, Opera Carolina, Livingstone College, the JCSU Board of Visitors and the Chris Canty Foundation. This North Carolina A&T alum is also a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Felicia, a graduate of Johnson C. Smith University, has worked in the information technology field for over 20 years. Currently as a Quality Assurance Testing Manager at Bank of America, she manages end-to-end systems integration, and testing consumer and small business banking initiatives. Together - a “match made in heaven.” The Grays believe strongly in giving back to their community and using their influence to encourage friends to do the same. “It started with our parents,” says Felicia. “Both our parents had us involved in the church doing things since we were little ...what we are doing now, is third generation.” Felicia goes on to say that they have been very fortunate to have met friends and supporters who honor their same desire to give back, which ignites them to coordinate efforts to carry out the work. Herb and Felicia’s love, benevolence and dedication to community keep them going strong. Although they make marriage look easy, we know like with anything, their success takes hard work –and more hard work! This couple has seemingly found the ideal ratio of ingredients—mixing their love for one another, with their love for giving back—a “recipe for marriage” definitely worth sharing. ■

HOCOLATE, CHOCOLATE, CHOCOLATE...CHOCOLATE - everywhere!! I’m talking about Hank Stewart’s Annual Hot CHOCOLATE Affair!! The featured artist this year was Grammy award-winning guitarist, Norman Brown, and the event was hosted by acclaimed chef, cookbook author, television host, and philanthropist, G. Garvin.

T2T

Wow! When I first entered the Porter Sanford Performing Arts Center, I felt the excitement!! There were soooo many people...soooo much energy!! One of the first people I greeted was Mr. Hot CHOCOLATE himself, Hank Stewart. Since chocolate was the theme of the event, most everyone in attendance wore shades of brown or brown print. The coordination of colors that the ladies and the men wore was on point. There was a DJ set up in the lobby playing music that kept me wanting to move my body and my feet. The total feeling was electric, with all of the laughter, music and buzzing chatter!! The lobby was set up with chocolate stations to display the culinary crafts of participating chefs. I walked around to each table and

tasted some of their treats...it was enough to send you into a CHOCOLATE coma! Some of the chefs represented were Navarro Lane of Twisted Pastry, L. Marie's Southern Cuisine, LeAndra Harris (Simply Delicious Cakes), and Kool Kakes by Cheryl. Ashley N. Keyes was the featured chef for the evening, showcasing her culinary skills. She started her company, Keyes In The Kitchen, two years ago, and has been cooking for 15 years. Wow! That means that she was only 13 years old when she started!! I found Ashley to be a remarkable young lady. She stated, “I take unhealthy foods and make them healthy!” Later, before the performance of the featured artist, there was a contest to judge the best chef of the evening. The

2015 winner was Malika Williams Miller (Social Butterfly Catering)!! I absolutely enjoyed myself and even saw a few familiar faces. When I finally had to visit the ladies room, to my surprise the air freshener was even CHOCOLATE scented!! Lol. I proceeded to the auditorium along with all of the other guests to enjoy the performances. Every seat was filled...a FULL house!! The room seemed to drip with chocolate because of all the beautiful people dressed in shades of brown. The host, G. Garvin, was hilarious - dancing around on the stage, singing, and making jokes. He kept the audience totally engaged! Dichotomy, spoken word poet, was the first to come to the stage. He performed my favorite, “It’s You,” with Desmond Champion accompanying him on vocals and guitar. I love when he performs the “Caramel” poem. It is too funny!! Dichotomy is always lots of fun. He said that this poem represented the caramel brothers in the building, because they were outnumbered by Hank Stewart and ALL the other CHOCOLATE brothers!! Next, Hank Stewart, spoken word poet and CHOCOLATE brother extraordinaire, came out and gave us a taste of his brilliance by performing several of his pieces. He recited, “I’m Mad,” accompanied by Jesse Hall on trumpet and Michael El on keys. He also came at us with some of his other works “It,” and two of my favorites, “Savoring the Moment” and “He Smells Me On You,” again accompanied by Jesse Hall and Michael El. This event also included visual artist, Sean Mulkey. He began his painting in the lobby, when the doors opened, and finished on stage during the performances. An auction was held before the featured artist, Norman Brown, came out. The piece, entitled “Chocolate Lust,” was absolutely beautiful; I would have loved to have owned it myself! Sean’s painting sold for $400.00!! Oh! I must not forget that Congressman Henry C. "Hank" Johnson Jr., U.S. Representative for Georgia's 4th congressional district, was in the house!! The most electric part of the night was guitarist Norman Brown!! He and Gerald Albright, whom I interviewed last year, produced the album, 24/7 in 2012. What an awesome collaboration! I was excited because I know Norman Brown’s talent and was well prepared to hear him for the first time in person!! He came out and surely did his thing, performing a medley of songs from his album, “After the Storm.” His daughter, Lanika, accompanied him vocally on a couple of songs. Norman also did snippets from Jimi Hendrix, Wes Montgomery, Donny Hathaway and George Benson, and says that his Norman Brown sound came from these guys! I could hear the ‘flavor’ of each artist in his music. Oh! What a flavorful mix!! I truly enjoyed the entire event, mingling with people, tasting the treats and watching as photos were being taken of all the beautiful people. This is a must attend annual event, and all for a great cause...to support the Hank Stewart Foundation! ■

atanya Washington was born in Manhattan, New York. As a child, she always enjoyed acting, doing fashion shows, writing poetry, and performing skits. After high school, she was spotted at a popular nightclub by a casting agent who asked her if she was a model. The casting agent told her that she “had a great look” and wanted to know if she would be interested in appearing in music videos. Washington went to a casting call the very next day to audition as a backup dancer for a reggae artist, and was chosen. From that point on she appeared in quite a few hip hop videos while touring with the reggae artist. She also did skits on video music box commercials. After a few years in the music industry, Washington attended New York Technical College. She wanted to get involved with working in "non- traditional" fields for women. "I always wanted to do the opposite of what everyone else was doing," Washington stated. After completing a 9-month program in Building Maintenance &

"Every day I wore a hard hat and boots; it was different; I learned a lot," said Washington. She enjoyed the work, but often got hit on by customers and coworkers, and it became overwhelming. They used to call me ‘Ms. Glam,’ Washington stated. She always dressed fabulous, and even in a hard hat and boots, added her own flair. Washington then relocated to the Midwest and became an Operations Supervisor for a call center. She always wanted to help others, and would often cook meals for the staff who were mostly college students. "I feel fulfilled when I'm making a difference," she said. After a couple of years in the Midwest, Washington pursued her Bachelor's degree. She started as a Communications major because she wanted to get into public relations and broadcast-

Her education helped land her a position in the Administration for Children's Services, interning as a family advocate, where she earned an award for her contribution to the agency. She did not stop there! Washington also worked at a school for children with Autism, and even took a test to become a Corrections Officer at Rikers Island, after obtaining her degree. She took another exam for Probation & Court services in the Midwest, and passed both the written and oral exams. After

With a love for hair since the age of 10, Courtney has been in the beauty industry for 6 years and has recently relocated to Atlanta, Georgia. As a child, Courtney saw her mother experience hardships and started braiding hair as a hustle, in order to help support the household. By high school, Courtney was dubbed the “kitchen beautician,” braiding the hair of friends, classmates, and kids at her church. It was then that Courtney says she realized hair as “the gift God had given me,” and states, “this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I knew I would be very successful at it.” Courtney graduated from high school in 2006 and went straight into beauty school, where she experienced some major challenges. Associating with the wrong people, after 8 months, Courtney was kicked out of beauty school and shortly after found out she was pregnant. Regarding her pregnancy, Courtney states, “finding out I was pregnant with my son put the spark back into me to figure out how to get back in school.” Owing a significant amount of money to the beauty school, Courtney was overwhelmed, but resolved that she would do all she needed to do in order to be a hands-on mother and be happy in her career. A special cousin, who prefers to remain unknown, believed in Courtney and gave her the $5000 that she needed to get back into school, declaring that she knew Courtney to be an ‘amazing hairdresser’ that would be known all over the world. With the support of her cousin, then the birth of her oldest son, Malachi, who Courtney refers to as her “miracle baby,” Courtney went on to work a full-time job and attend school full-time, graduating in 7 months.

ontray is a California native raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He was intro-duced to music at a very young age by singing in his church choir. As Rontray grew, he knew that singing was his passion, but never had the confidence to sing in front of large crowds and audi-ences. However, at age 13, he auditioned for the AMTC competition and left with the top singing finalist award. This achievement solidified his goal of becom-ing a great vocalist, and he began singing in multiple venues such as local talent shows, open mic nights, and even ven-tured into writing his own music. At age 15, he wrote, produced, and released his first mix tape, Minds of the Times, on soundcloud, which included R&B covers such as So Beautiful and Just Friends (Musiq Soulchild), and also original mu-sic such as Phone Call and My Gurl. At age 18, he independently released his first EP, I Chose You, which includes four original songs. Rontray plans to attend Georgia State University where he will co-major in music technology and vocal performance, and pursue a career as a singer/songwriter and producer. â–

hen you think of soulful R&B, you think of JT. A native of Columbus Ohio, he is incredibly equipped with raw talent, and he is able to display an amazing ability to intrigue audience of all cultures. His strong and smooth tenor voice brings about the soulful sound of R&B, as it makes knees tremble with desire. The fourth out of seven children, JT grew up in a gospel filled environment where he began his singing career. During many life experiences, JT, Carlos, and Dink began to challenge the music industry as they became exposed to the world as Rated R (Reckless Attitude toward Entertainment Dominance), a national recording R&B group from the Midwest. Pure soul, perfection, hard work, and determination provided them with numerous opportunities to travel the world, performing in many states across the US. After dedicating several years to RATED R, JT decided to branch out on his own with an album titled “Release”. To create a unique sound, JT collaborated with producers (Maestro, D Soundz and Antuan Walker) to capture a sound defined as the Old School Flava with a New School Twist. Always on the grind, when JT is in his mediated stage he ends up in the lab writing, coproducing, and collaborating heartfelt, up and personal, soul searching pieces of art that gives the audience a piece of him. JT has welcomed his fans into his world by enticing and mesmerizing their minds with his soulful music like Lies Too and Lets Go Steady while quickly getting the listeners on the dance floor with Pop them Bottles and Swervin. The Release Album and videos are gaining notoriety and is in rotation through several media channels such as Pandora, ITunes, Vevo, not to mention that JT has signed a distribution and licensing deal in Japan with BBQ Co Ltd.

came from a mother who expressed a strong passionate in music, which she instilled in her seven children. She groomed her children into a gospel group called the (Taylor X) where at the age of six I became the lead singer of original music written and produced by my late mother Helen Saunders. People used to call my mom Joe Jackson, (lol)... We rehearsed every day from sunup to sundown perfecting steps and harmonies we thought that was normal, we didn’t realize the gift until later in life. So, what have been your most favorite moments in your career? Well, throughout my career I have met and performed on stage with numerous artist. Rated R has had the pleasure of opening for the late great Gerald Levert at the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, Janet Jackson “The Red Velvet Tour” which was a powerful moment for so many reasons. Just having the opportunity to perform in front of hundreds of thousands of people till this day that makes me feel like entertaining is where I belong. However, the most memorable moment was when I got a chance to spend time with Earth, Wind and Fire back stage and see their full rehearsal which literally blew my mind. It taught me the difference between just being a singer versus an entertainer. It was a great collaboration that Rated R (Myself, Dink & Carlos) conveyed each time we stepped on the stage; performing original music from our Album titled “Tomorrow 2 Yesterday” Who have been your icons? Of course my mom. I know that I keep repeating myself but she was an amazing powerful woman, Michael Jackson, R Kelly and Mint Condition just to name a few. Not forgetting about the Motown movement that created the sound of true R&B. What’s next for you?

Why do you think you’ve had longevity as a music artist? I’ve always been a competitor and up for the challenge. There’s nothing worse when I see talent that’s lacking passion “No will power to sacrifice and invest in one’s own dreams”. If this is your passion, your love, hold on to your dream and continue to grind! Artist are entrepreneurs, entertainers and mentors that communicates to the world by invite fans into their lives through music. We’re like a character, a musical author. That’s what has inspired me always. When you listen to my music or watch my videos it should always spark an emotion because of my passion. You mentioned character. What character did you draw about yourself?

Music wise I feel like there’s so much to explore; I’m back in the lab working on a new project due to be released February 2016. This LP is diverse and will take you on a ride from the bedroom to the dance floor. I have captured the mature audience with the “Fall in Love” crossover single that will captivate lovers as they too can relate to being loved, true life “Grinding” we all hustle to survive “the hustle is silence, now let your success make the noise”; while enjoying the “MidWest Shuffle” an up temple Line Dance flow that gets the party goers on their feet. As I expand my brand of entrepreneurship I look forward to creating my own empire by discovering new and upcoming talent. I control my destiny, it’s not over until I decide it’s over. ■

uying a new home is one of the most exciting things that you will ever do in life. It is a great privilege to say that "I am a homeowner!" I want to talk about a few things that you should avoid during the process of buying a new home. There are so many things to consider while you are searching for the right property, like location, schools, proximity to freeways, square footage, and lot size. Many home buyers make certain assumptions about their ability to qualify for a mortgage, but savvy home buyers won’t let those assumptions get between them and their dream home. Mistake #1 You must be pre-approved by a mortgage broker. It’s much more fun to look at properties, than to actually fill out a loan application. I get it, home shopping is fun – but, you cannot close on the home unless you have been pre-approved by a bank or lender.

T2T

Mistake #2 Make sure you have a good credit score when applying for your home loan. Remember when we heard, "credit is worth more than actual cash sometimes" – it’s true. Good credit can sometimes get you a whole lot more than what you have in the bank in liquid assets. So, keep your credit in good standing. If your credit is not in good standing, talk with a credit repair special-

72

REAL ESTATE TRENDS

ist. Mistake #3 Be prepared to go through the home loan process. The bank will ask you for almost everything you own to get the loan approved. So, keep your cool, and be prepared to have all your vital documents together. Some of the documents you will need are bank statements, picture ID, pay stubs, and tax returns dating back at least 2 years. Mistake #4 Be sure not to go purchase a big ticket item that will go on your credit, such as a car ,boat, or a house full of furniture. Your mortgage person pulls your credit before the process begins, and guess what ?? They pull it right before you go to the closing table. If your credit score has dropped, we have a problem. So, be mindful of these things when purchasing your new home! Mistake #5 Never bite off more than you can chew; look at homes that are within your budget. We never want you to go in foreclosure if we can help it, so listen to your mortgage broker and believe what price point they say you can qualify for. Stay within your means, and live comfortable. As time passes, then step into a larger home if your situation changes. So, now, go out there and find your new home! Happy House hunting! ■

An Antidote To The ‘No Vacation Nation’

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015

If you’re looking to awaken your romantic relationship, vacation ownership can be the answer there, too. The study showed that approximately 63 percent of vacation owners had taken a leisurely trip in the past 12 months with one other individual or as a couple, which was higher than the nonowners at 55 percent. If you think that timeshare means you have to go to the same place every year, you may want to give the product another look, as ownership has become quite flexible. Most properties are also affiliated with a vacation exchange program, such as RCI, that lets you trade your time for resort stays in locations all over the world. Such vacation exchange programs prove to be incredibly beneficial if you are looking to explore new and exciting destinations. In fact, the Phocuswright study showed that vacation owners are more likely to travel internationally, with 57.8 percent of respondents reporting they had traveled abroad for their most recent trip, which is significantly higher than the 24.7 percent of non-vacation owners who reported the same. If you still have a fear of commitment, you can try out timeshare accommodations by renting them for one-off vacations through sites such as EndlessVacationRentals.com. If you do decide that this type of accommodation works well for your family, don’t be afraid to commit. ■

TRAVEL TRENDS

73

T2T

(NAPSI)—When it comes to vacationing, Americans have commitment issues. The vacation situation in America is looking dire. According to the U.S. Travel Association, on average, workers are leaving nearly five paid vacation days on the table—that’s almost an entire week of time spent with family and friends or investing in yourself. The situation continues to get worse. In 2000, the average worker took 20.9 vacation days. Today, workers are down to just 16, losing almost a whole week in just 15 years’ time. There’s a list of reasons Americans aren’t traveling, including tightened budgets, work responsibilities and school schedules. Some of these reasons, though, can be addressed simply by planning ahead and committing to taking time off each and every year. One great way to commit to travel is to purchase a timeshare. Becoming a vacation owner means you are planning on years of travel—which takes away some of the pressure of booking a trip. Many timeshare owners also report spending less on accommodations over the course of several years. The proof of this concept is in the stats. According to a study conducted by Phocuswright, 41.8 percent of vacation owners had taken a leisurely trip with the family, including children, in the past 12 months. Comparatively, only 30.4 percent of those who are not vacation owners had done so.
