COVER STORY “We cannot change the past, but we can change our attitude toward it. Uproot guilt and plant forgiveness. Tear out arrogance and seed humility. Exchange love for hate, thereby, making the present comfortable and the future promising.” --Dr. Maya Angelou

P

uerto Rican actor, Luis Ramos was raised in the South Bronx, NY during a time when racial barriers were both struggling and evolving simultaneously. He has seen it all, when it comes to diversity and intermingling of races. He said, “Growing up in the Bronx, Latinos were Diaspora, (scattered population with a common origin in a smaller geographic area) we were not Puerto Rican, not American, not Black nor White and so there was a tremendous identity crisis. My greatgrandparents on one side were as dark as midnight and my other grandparents were White with green eyes. However, it was vital that I grew up with such a unique perspective where I learned about all of those cultures. Once, Roberto Clemente, a Black Puerto Rican baseball player for the Pittsburgh Pirates said in an interview, I never understood racism until I came to the United States and people began to judge me by the color of my skin.” Ramos is part of the cast of the new hit STARZ TV series, POWER, now in its third season, it focuses on the lead character James “Ghost” St. Patrick played by Omari Hardwick, who is a wealthy New York night club

8

owner who has it all, caters to the city’s elite and dreams big, while living a double life as a drug kingpin. Luis’s character, Carlos “Vibora” Ruiz is a part of his crew who represents the Latino culture and is determined to protect and provide for his family at all costs. The show is centered in Brooklyn, NY and has heavy integration of races all fighting for power using any means necessary. The alliances that are built among the cultures, although profiting through illegal means, are driven from the desire to provide a better life for their families. Luis says, he can relate to his character in that, he grew up around these same races, especially the African American culture. He knew more about Alabama, by the time he was a teen, than he did about Puerto Rico. Coming from the street-life, he understands all the characters mindset on POWER, “The streets have transitions just like elementary, Jr. high and high school, and you have to graduate from each and hopefully survive. But it takes intuitiveness to stay in the game as long as those characters have. Carlos has a ‘no matter what’ attitude to get what he needs to get done. Only those with families will understand this, whether the pathway is legal or illegal.” Luis hopes that those who watch, realize that power corrupts. It

can do many things and there are a lot of aspects similar to prison enlightenment involved with it. He explains that one must have the ability to shift and adjust to the life they are given. Ramos had no idea he would be an actor. He was chosen to attend the famous SCHOOL FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS in NYC where the TV show Fame was based out of--over thousands of other inner-city kids. There, he found a love for performance inspired by many of the instructors. When his street mentality threatened his expulsion, he set on the path to “getting it right”. Because of his determination and the opportunity given to him, he met Harry Belafonte at the age of 17 and became a friend of his daughter. Since then, he has met many iconic individuals. After doing films like “The Miracle of Spanish Harlem” and “Trouble in the Heights” to name a few, he decided to move back home. He felt the need to be closer to his family. There was a sense of belonging that had to be fulfilled and he was now in a position to give back like so many of the “Ghosts” and “Viboras” that he watched growing up had done in his community. He remembers NBA’s Nate “Tiny” Archibald, who used to walk up to him when he was a kid and interact with him. Luis wants to be just as accessible in his hometown. His mom instilled in him, “Don’t put on airs for yourself, be respectful.” Ramos has been that way his whole life…He states, “At some point, someone will come into your path and tell you the truth and when they do, it will change your life. We must teach our children to be openminded when that time comes. During this point in my life and career--my life has unfolded before me. You have to open your ears, eyes and heart to see what’s in front of you and adhere to it. Sometimes the things in your life chooses you, you don’t choose it.” You can watch the POWER Television series on STARZ when it returns in 2016 with Luis Ramos, Omari Hardwick, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Naturi Naughton, LaLa Anthony, Lela Loren and more. EDUCATIONAL TRENDS

Understanding the Latino Culture Ann W. Clutter, Ph.D. Extension Educator, EFNEP OSU Extension, Montgomery County

L

Ana Claudia Zubieta, Ph.D. Director, Ohio SNAP-Ed/FNP OSU Extension, Department of Human Nutrition

atinos constitute the largest minority group residing in the United States since 2001. According to U.S. Census projections, Latinos comprised 15.1% (45.5 million) of the U.S. population in 2007 (12.5% in 2000). Mexicans are the largest ethnic segment of Latinos (64%), followed by Puerto Ricans (9%), Central and South Americans (7.7% and 5.5%), Cubans (3.5%), and others (10.3%). Hispanics, another word for Latinos, is a term created by the federal government in the early 1970s as an attempt to provide a common denominator for a large and diverse population with connection to any Spanish-speaking country or culture. Thus, the U.S. Census Bureau includes in this category about 350,000 Spaniards. The term Latino reflects the Latin American origin of the population and is more commonly used by the Latino population; therefore, Hispanics or Latinos define an ethnicity and it may be of any race. In Ohio, this population group has grown progressively for the last decade, becoming an important piece of its changing ethnic composition. From 2000 to 2002, the number of Latinos living in several Ohio counties experienced significant growth, especially in the following counties: Pickaway and Franklin (9% and 13% increase, respectively), Delaware and Fairfield (22% and 23% increase), and Union (25% increase). In the last 14

ten years, Delaware County’s Latino population has quadrupled and in Columbus, it increased by 162%. The Latino community, the majority being of Mexican descent, is also a very young population group. Family Values Traditionally, the Hispanic family is close-knit and the single most important social unit. The term familia usually goes beyond the nuclear family. The Hispanic “family unit” includes not only parents and children but also extended family. In most Hispanic families, the father is the head of the family and the mother is responsible for the home. Individuals within a family have a moral responsibility to aid other members of the family experiencing financial problems, unemployment, poor health conditions, or other life issues. Family ties are very strong: when someone travels to another town or city to study or for a short visit (e.g. vacation, business, or medical reasons), staying with relatives or even with friends of relatives is a common practice. Families often gather to celebrate holidays, birthdays, baptisms, first communions, graduations, and weddings. Latino families instill in their children the importance of honor, good manners, and respect for authority and the elderly. Preserving the Spanish language within the family is a common practice in many Latino homes.

T2T LATINO WINTER 2015-16

EDUCATIONAL TRENDS Etiquette Spanish speakers tend toward formality in their treatment of one another. A firm handshake is common practice between people as greeting and for leave-taking . A hug and a light kiss on a cheek are also common greeting practices among women, and men and women who are close friends or family. The Spanish language provides forms of formal and non-formal address (different use of usted vs. tu for the pronoun you, polite and familiar commands, the use of titles of respect to preface individuals’ first names such as Don or Doña). In non-formal settings, conversations between Spanish speakers are usually loud and rapid with animated gestures and body language to better convey points. Hispanics usually recognize and value looks and appearance as a sense of honor, dignity, and pride. Formal attire is commonly worn by Hispanics to church, parties, social gatherings, and work. Gym shoes and jeans, however, are becoming more popular among Hispanic women, particularly in non-formal settings. Hispanics tend to be more relaxed and flexible about time and punctuality than U.S. natives. For example, Latinos who are invited for an 8 a.m. event may not begin to arrive until 8:30 a.m. or later. Within the Hispanic community, not being on time is a socially acceptable behavior. Hispanics tend to be reserved about public speaking because of their foreign accent. Rituals and Religions In the Hispanic world, religion has traditionally played a significant role in daily activity. Catholicism is still the most dominant religion. The church influences family life and community affairs, giving spiritual meaning to the Hispanic culture. Each local community celebrates its patron saint’s day with greater importance and ceremony than individuals do for personal birthdays. As in other parts of the world, traces of the religions of the indigenous groups and African-Americans of Latin America are found in the Catholicism that Hispanics practice. Celebrations and Holidays Hispanic countries celebrate the more popular international holidays, notably Easter, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year Day, and Three Kings’ Day. In addition, each country celebrates its El Dia de Independencia. The term fiesta nacional refers to an official national holiday; las fiestas refer to festivals—local, regional, or national—that may be held only one day or may last veral days. Most holidays are centered on or have their origins in religion. Many celebrations of the Catholic Church are officially designated by the government as holidays. National government offices may be closed or have limited hours for local or regional holidays. Eating Habits In Hispanic countries, a light meal is served for breakfast. Lunch, referred to as el almuerzo (Comidain, Mexico), usually is the main meal of the day for newly arrived Latinos. In some countries, it is customary for adult family members and children to come home from work or school for about two hours to be together for this meal. La siesta, which is a rest period taken after lunch, is known to be a common practice among adult

T2T LATINO WINTER 2015-16

Hispanics, but modern work and school schedules are influencing the disappearance of this practice, especially in the urban areas. In the early evening, la merienda, a light snack of coffee and rolls or sandwiches, is served. This meal is often very informal and may be just for children or for adults who are at home at that time of the day. In the evening, often as late as 9:00 p.m., la cena, a small supper, concludes the day’s meals. Once settled in the United States, most Hispanics adopt the three-meal system. Mid-day and evening meals are important family or social events. Especially when guests are present, the meal may be followed by the sobremesa, a time to linger and talk over coffee or perhaps an after-dinner drink. Usually when food or additional servings are offered to Hispanics, they tend to accept only after it is offered a second or third time. Teaching and Learning Implications To fully engage Hispanic audiences in the learning process, particular attention should be given to gaining and maintaining trust. Greater educational efforts will occur by learners if Hispanic community leaders are involved in the planning, delivery, and evaluation of these educational efforts. Be aware that the physical distance between Hispanics when holding a conversation is much closer than in other cultures. Exhibiting respect for learners is another important aspect of the Hispanic culture. Teachers need to pay individual attention to learners (e.g. greeting each learner, handing papers to each individual rather than passing them down the row, being sensitive to different cultures among Hispanics, writing educational materials at appropriate reading levels). Differences in educational levels, language skills, income levels, and cultural values among Hispanics need to be considered by Extension educators when planning educational programs. Even though Hispanics share the same language, their cultures (including their foods) may vary considerably. Acculturation also plays an important role in defining the dietary habits of Latino immigrants. Although less acculturated Latinos have a higher consumption of fruits and vegetables as well as a lower consumption of fat when compared to their more acculturated peers, that doesn’t mean that all traditional Latino foods are “healthier.” Some traditional Latino foods, although high in dietary fiber, are also high in fat (e.g. refried beans). Churches, local libraries, and recreational centers (with child-care arrangements, if needed) may be appropriate places to hold educational programs with Hispanic audiences. Among Hispanics, information is passed mostly by word of mouth. Grocery stores and churches are the main places people meet, visit, and exchange information. Latinos have emerged as an influential component of Ohio’s economic sector. Employment opportunities have evolved into increased demand and support for local businesses that cater to Latinos’ needs. Spanish-language services in schools, libraries, and healthcare facilities are frequently available for Ohio Latino families. It is anticipated that the surge in the number of Hispanic households in Ohio will continue to grow exponentially, presenting challenges within the labor market and the housing industry, in providing adequate social services, and in education. In addition, the growing demand for culturally specific food products poses a challenge to Ohio food producers, processors, and marketers.■

Run for Change Sandra Santos

By Camela L. Douglass, M.S. ED.

“R

BEFORE

un Forest run” are the only words I could cheer when I saw my client Sandra Santos run her first 5K (3.1 miles) race. After months of personal training, Zumba classes, and an overall lifestyle change, Santos (as she’s endeared by her peers) had achieved one of her personal fitness goals—run and finish a 5K. Not only did she run it, but she placed 2nd in her age group. Running has always been an indirect form of exercise for Santos. As a teenager, she played soccer, basketball, and volleyball leaving little time for laziness and inactivity. However, after her first few months of college, Santos’ active lifestyle instantly changed. Her days were consumed with classwork, missed meals, late night snacking, and college parties. She had gained the famous “freshmen fifteen” but had no immediate plans of losing it. By the age of 23, things went from bad to worse after she landed her first job as a Physical Education teacher. Even though her class involved a lot of activity for the students, Santos’ days were spent giving instructions to the

AFTER students and making frequent visits to the nice ladies in the cafeteria. Santos’ weight had ballooned beyond recognition and the word exercise was no longer in her vocabulary. The day of reckoning finally came when she was eating McDonald’s and a fellow teacher called her out about her eating habits. He said, “how are you eating McDonald’s and you’re a gym teacher? You’re not setting a good example for your students.” This challenge hit home and sparked a desire for change. She enlisted my help and the mission began to get her on the right track to living a healthy, more fulfilling life. My first goal was to assess Santos’ current eating habits and exercise regimen. Culturally, being a Latina, Santos informed me that eating what society calls healthy was not the norm in her household. Santos’ perception of eating healthy included a “healthy” helping of fried pork chops, fried plantains, and arroz con dulce (rice with sugar). She was true to this way of life. Her parents were born and raised in Puerto Rico, raising her with a strong Latino heritage of eating cultural dishes. Holiday celebrations also created opportunities for Santos to indulge in pasteles, pernil (with extra seasoning), rice and beans, flan, and

Sandra Santos of course drinking bottomless Bacardis. This newfound knowledge helped me set some realistic, attainable and timely goals for Santos. The teacher had homework. Her first assignment was to increase her water intake to half her body weight. Next, she had to add color to her meals and cut white foods from her diet. This included: no sugar, no salt, no white bread, no white potatoes or rice, and no creams or sauces. Her meals had to be lean, green, and clean. I also instructed her to eat 5-6 small meals a day to increase her metabolism. Lastly, her exercise regimen had to include two personal training days and four, 45-minute cardio days per week with one day to rest. Although challenging, Santos did exactly what I asked her to do. After the first 60 days, it was clear to see that Sandra Santos was becoming a new woman. Not only was she eating and drinking cleaner, but she was running again and modeling in fashion shows. In the first year, Santos lost over 50lbs. and 6 dress sizes. She changed her thoughts and ultimately changed her life. In the Spring, Santos will run in her 13th 5K race.â–

nytime you have an opportunity to make a difference in this world and you don’t, then you’re wasting your time on this earth,” This one of Marisa’s favorite quotes by Roberto Clemente. Sitting in her office, Marisa sets her pen down to take a break from hours of writing – she’s working on a children’s chapter book about Puerto Rico. As she gets up from her chair, she glances to the right where her office wall is lined with pictures. Some are personally autographed of her Puerto Rican role models and book endorsers: Roberto Clemente, Rita Moreno, Jose Feliciano, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Chita Rivera, Erik Estrada. She ponders and admires on how they held onto their dreams despite coming from humble beginnings; and how they overcame many obstacles they encountered in life. This motivates and inspires Marisa to continue to write children’s stories about her beloved island, Puerto Rico. It reminds Marisa that no matter where you come from, dreams do come true, and she is extremely thankful to the Lord Jesus Christ for fulfilling those dreams.

Marisa de Jesús Paolicelli By Tina Williams Marisa was born and raised in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and is of Puerto Rican descent. During her childhood years, Marisa lived in low-income housing developments. She was not exposed to many opportunities, and she was saddened about the things she could not afford to do that other children could. Books opened a new world for Marisa, and she fondly remembers the best time of the week was when the bookmobile came to her block. Marisa’s love for books and reading would take her to different places where she would experience other worlds. Little did Marisa know that one day she would write her own books that spoke to her Puerto Rican roots. Marisa’s sincere desire is to share the wonders and beauty of Puerto Rico with children of all backgrounds through her award-winning educational and entertaining children’s books: “There’s a Coquí in My Shoe!” (Winner of 3 International Latino Book Awards) and “Lightkeepers to the Rescue!”(Winner of 13 awards to include several International Latino Book Awards), both published by ChiChi Rodriguez Books. After finishing her first children’s manuscript, Marisa sent copies out to these same Puerto Rican role models for their feedback, and she was overjoyed that each one of them sent back glowing endorsements! To Marisa’s surprise, Chi Chi Rodriguez found interest in publishing her stories, and on a handshake deal, Marisa’s dream of producing children’s books became a reality. Marisa keeps the numerous rejection letters from publishers that did not want to take a chance on publishing her award-

28

winning children’s books on hand. During school author visits, she shares the letters on a laminated scroll and unrolls them for the children, reminding them to always believe in their project. Bringing hope to the children she meets and encouraging them to never give up on their dreams is a driving force in Marisa’s life. Thousands of copies of Marisa’s books have been sold and her countless workshops have inspired children to follow their passion. Marisa returns to her office and picks up where she left off. As an author, she knows that the first draft of any manuscript isn’t the final. She writes, re-writes and writes again until she’s happy with submitting “A Jibarito’s Miracle” to the publisher. She knows that revision makes the piece even better. “A Jibarito’s Miracle” is set for release in mid 2015. Contact information for the author is as follows: Marisa de Jesús Paolicelli P.O. Alison Feliciano C.E.O., Speaker, Author and Coach

A

lison Feliciano was born in Bedford-Stuyvesant Brooklyn to a single mother. Her mother died when she was only eight years old. She then moved to the Bronx with her Aunt and Uncle. Alison’s birth father died when she was only 14. From the age of eight and for the next 20 years, every 2 to 3 years someone in her life died. By the time she was 28 her birth parents, her parents that raised her (aunt and uncle), all of her grandparents and countless aunts and uncles all died – she even suffered the loss of a child. Amazingly, despite so much loss, Alison was fortunate and able to attend Nyack College at the age of 16. She graduated in 1990 with a degree in Business Administration. Since then, Alison has been in the Finance industry in different capacities for over 25 years. She has also owned Mortgage and Real Estate companies. To date, Alison has accomplished many things. To name a few, Alison has… § Started and successfully built three companies § Built and trained a team of over 600 agents in the credit education industry § Trained over 300 people in the Mortgage Industry § Assisted in training and developing over 50 Real Estate professionals § Never had an employee leave to become competition § Thrived and excelled in industries that were predominantly male Alison and her husband Marcus lost everything over eight years ago when the Real Estate and Mortgage industries collapsed. She and her husband lost their 6000 square foot home, both of their companies and more. She moved her family to Florida to start all over again in a 1200 square foot apartment. At this same time Alison learned that everything her industry taught her about credit and debt was a LIE. She took the time to relearn everything she knew about credit. To date she has helped hundreds personally. Indirectly, she is responsible for helping thousands to understand their credit, get it restored and go on to achieve their dream of home ownership. She has rebuilt her career and has a successful company in the Financial Education arena - she helps people save money, make money, create great credit profiles and become debt free. Alison and her family moved to the Atlanta area over four years ago. She loves the area so much that currently Alison is running for Mayor of Powder Springs, GA. When elected Alison would be the first Hispanic Mayor in Powder Springs History! Ac-

tually not just Powder Springs history but she would be the FIRST Female Hispanic Mayor in the State of Georgia! Alison is also on the Corporate Staff for I AM MUSIC.co. She was attracted to the opportunity that I AM MUSIC presented because it gives her a chance to teach all that she had learned in the Personal Finance arena to a group of individuals who could really benefit from it. Independent Musicians/Artist. I AM MUSIC takes the Independent artist and gives them a platform from which they can market, promote and brand themselves. This platform will give the Musicians/artist access to Alison, but more importantly, gives Alison access to them. It is her desire to help them develop as business owners while I AM MUSIC helps them to build their brand as an Artist. Alison’s mantra is “You only go as far as you are believing so DREAM BIG!” She kept her faith and kept dreaming – today she and her family are back in a 6 bedroom/4 bath home….and that’s just the beginning!

Eva and Samuel Rodriguez

E

By Deann Alford

va Rodriguez had been serving as a church's associate pastor for more than three years when the senior pastor suffered a moral failure that disqualified him from leadership. Although she sensed the Holy Spirit's urging to step into the senior position, many in the congregation refused to support her because of her gender. The conflict wrenched her heart. She continued to seek guidance from the Lord. Her husband, Samuel Rodriguez, also an Assemblies of God pastor, is president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, a network of more than 40,000 churches in the United States and 440,000 in Latin America. He told his wife, "You were born to preach," verifying what she heard from the Holy Spirit. With that, she planted Centro Cristiano De Adoración (Christian Worship Center) in a member's living room in Sacramento, California. From the Spanish-language church's first gathering of 18 adults and children in 2006, today the church is flourishing under its new name, Cántico Nuevo (New Song). Eva Rodriguez is its senior pastor. The couple maintains a high national profile. In 2008 Eva's prayer opened the Republican National Convention; Samuel's prayer opened the convention in 2012. Samuel frequently appears on Fox News. Time magazine named him among the world's 100 most influential people of 2013. He's a key adviser to Trinity Broadcasting Network's new English-language Hispanic faithand-family channel called TBN Salsa. Meanwhile Eva Rodriguez leads the women's division of the NHCLC and speaks at Hispanic women's church retreats and other events across the nation. Four years ago, Samuel Rodriguez became senior pastor of New Season Christian Worship Center, a multiethnic Englishlanguage congregation that shares a building with Cántico Nuevo. Between the two churches, weekend attendance is 1,300. In addition, the Rodriguezes have three children: Yvonne, Nathan, and Lauren. Juggling family and ministry has proven

T2T LATINO WINTER 2015-16

challenging for Eva. "If you are a woman pastor, you're also a mom and a wife," she says. "To balance those three out, it's not easy." She adds that male pastors often have a wife at home who cooks, cleans, helps children with homework, and goes to games. Her husband had a demanding job and an extensive travel schedule. "I did pay a price, but today there are no regrets," Eva says. "My kids love church and love God. At the end of the day, so many lives have been transformed by the ministry." The key, she says, is prioritizing family time and couple time. "We complement each other," Eva says. "He has a national platform. He's a busy man. We always made sure whenever the kids were home and he was at home, it was family time." The couple shares a vision: making the Hispanic community self-dependent. To that end, they aim to help Latinos gain skills to increase their ability to serve one another, strengthen the next generation, and thus become empowered to achieve their dreams while following Christ. Eva often leads events for pastors' wives. She encourages them to become pastors as well. "You don't have to be the woman behind the man, but the woman next to the man and work together," she says. "A lot of women have low self-esteem. My aim is getting these women to believe in themselves and what the Lord has called them to do." Nick Garza, secretary-treasurer for the Northern Pacific Latin American District of the Assemblies of God, has known the couple for more than 20 years, dating to when they were district youth directors for the AG Eastern Spanish district. "They have some of the most Pentecostal youth meetings I have ever seen -- hungry for God, powerful, intense," Garza says. "They're extremely dedicated to revival. Their church is very experience-driven, that every service should have altar time and free flow of the gifts of the Spirit."■

hristian Louboutin, the Iconic footwear designer known for his signature shiny red- lacquered soles launched an exquisite nail polish collection mid season of last year. The Christian Louboutin empire has sold over a million pairs of shoes to both women and men. Celebrity driven A- listers around the world emerge to his design studio for their personal made to measure footwear. According to Christian Louboutin, the red-sole was birthed by accident. As a result, it became his official trademark. The nail polish collection consists of 30 shades, in collaboration with the iconic red color – Rogue Louboutin, it’s not your average colors or price point. Price ranges from fifty dollars up to sixhundred and seventy- five dollars. These are limited editions for the holiday launch. It’s called Starlight. Trendsetters to Trendsetters Latino Magazine conducted an online survey. We asked the question -Would you purchase Nail Polish for $50.00? The results were astounding due to the participation from The Ladies of The Conversation ClubCreator/Visionary, Attorney Daryl Kevin Washington. Listed below are a few comments in reference to the survey. “Myshoska Shocum -If I can apply it myself and it looks as flawless as if a salon had done, of course. This would be crazy savings. I get shellac and it lasts ~14 days. That's $28 per application”

“Bobbie Bee- Sounds like a winner! But I'm not real good at polishing my own nails. Practice could equal some savings for me considering it's about $30 every cpl weeks for my shellac” “Beverly Glam- I have two bottles that someone bought for me. I don't think it is any different than getting a mani or pedi for $30 or more (not comparing the acrylics or gels that cost more and last longer” “Meme Amaechi- I have this in flaming red, It doesn't chip” “Regina Jones- I need this polish in my life” “Carolyn Woullard- Where can I purchase this nail polish? I absolutely love the Red color” Descriptive details: “Long-wearing, chip resistant formula is highly pigmented with luxe, glossy color and UV protection to keep the color true. Two coats give the effect of 20 layers of traditional lacquer, with a brilliant shine. A custom-designed, patented triangular brush ensures precise application, while shorter bristles pick up the right amount of product, preventing air bubbles and ensuring flawless coverage” Trendsetters to Trendsetters Latino Magazine appreciates your feedback! T2T LATINO WINTER 2015-16

A

ngel’s childhood journey originated in the brick city of Newark, New Jersey; she was raised in a two parent household, a (PK) Preachers Kid. After the demise of her parents divorcing, Angel and her brother became estranged from their paternal father for over twentyyears. Angel’s family continued to persevere; her mother up-rooted her children and relocated to Los Angeles, California. Shortly thereafter, she decided to leave the big city lifestyle for a more laid-back, family oriented atmosphere in the state of Atlanta, Ga. Angel describes her youthful years as one of the most dreadful experiences a child could have ever endured; she struggled severely with her skin completion, leading to an identity crisis based upon her ethnicity of Portuguese, Caucasian, Choctaw Indian, African American, and of Latin descent. Angel was a very inquisitive child in her youthful years; she asked a plethora of questions. Simultaneously her mother knew she was a gifted writer, therefore she encouraged her daughter to develop her creative ingenious gift. Unfortunately, after high school, the gifted and talented aspiring writer's life began to transition; by the age of nineteen-years old Angel’s life took a surprising left turn. She began dating a young man whom she assumed was her fairy-tale prince charming, Angel was proud to call this young man her boyfriend, and now lover. Shortly thereafter, they became live-in lovers, residing under the same roof in the home of his parents. Within this time frame, he began to physically and mentally abuse her. Angel says “he beat her repeatedly until every piece of clothing was ripped off her body.” This was the start of what she assumes and considered to be a normal relationship. Angel’s father wasn’t present in her youthful years, therefore she was oblivious of how a young man should honor and respect the very essence of a young lady. Unfortunately, she couldn’t identify nor comprehend what a healthy, viable, and monogamous relationship looked like. The domestic violence cycle continued; Angel recovered and moved on from her teenage lover. She was hopeful that the cycle would not repeat itself, but it escalated within the next chapters of her life. Years later, Angel was finally in a new relationship. She is elated to be the proud mother of a son (Alex) and a daughter (Alexia). She was praying for a better outcome now that she had children. Unfortunately, her relationship started to emerge and show its ugly face. Angel says it was a gradual process, but her children’s father literally put a gun to her head and threatened to pull the trigger. As her children watched, her son called 911. It was the call that would save her life! Angel says, “I thought this would be my last breath taken.” This episode was a very traumatizing life experience for Angel. Every time she conjured up the courage to leave her abuser, he would find her. She recalls an incident that occurred as a result of her trying to escape. She proceeded to the nearest bus station, but he found her, beat her in front of everyone that was present, and then he dragged her into his car. According to Angel, no one knew her battle scars. But she was bruised but not broken. Voice trembling, she replies, “I’m not proud of my past, but it’s prepared me for the future; and I’m not ashamed.” In her darkest hour of despair, when she was on the verge of contemplating suicide, something diverted her.

TRENDSETTER SPOTLIGHT Quote: "Find someone in your life that will push you off the cliff, forcing you to fly."

Emelyn Stuart FOUNDER/CEO STUART FILMS, ACTRESS, PRODUCER

SHARING HER TRUTHS AS SHE INVESTS IN WHAT’S MOST IMPORTANT…PEOPLE Written by Shernita Wiggins

E

melyn Stuart is one woman celebrating her Hispanic heritage through entrepreneurship and leaving legacies not only for her own culture, but for anyone who wants to achieve success through persistence. I met her over a year ago, after she recently moved from New York. She struck me as an inspirational individual after I watched a video interview about her life and work. When I had the opportunity to talk to her personally, she shared such motivational words, that it put me on the path to achieving my own dreams that I was once told would be impossible. I thought it was only befitting that her story is revealed to others, no matter the gender or culture. T2T: Share your upbringing and how it inspired you to become the woman you are today. I grew up in a primarily Caucasian neighborhood in Brooklyn and there was a strong emphasis on education. When I was growing up, my Hispanic parents couldn't speak any English but they wanted me to have what they called a "fighting chance." They hired a college student to help me with my homework and even got me a language coach to help me speak without our traditional Hispanic accent. The efforts my parents made and their belief in my abilities, gave me the strength to aim for the sky, and a drive for success. T2T: What/Who influenced your career? Explain how you are using it to help others. Being a producer allows me the privilege of helping people live out their dreams. I've often said that as a producer, who is an investor, I invest in people - their vision and talents. I have come to understand that making money is great, but helping others is a more powerful and lasting position. It allows me to serve and create change at the same time. I am influenced by women like Oprah Winfrey, Hillary Clinton, Kathleen Kennedy (Producer), Sheryl Sandberg (Lean In) and the countless women who pursue their dreams against all odds. T2T: How do you maintain balance with a career and family? Outside of Stuart Films, I live a very simple life. My theory is, the smaller my house, the less time I have to spend cleaning, the more time I get to spend with my children when I'm home. I have a nanny who handles the everyday chores which frees me up to spend a lot of time with my children. Many working moth-

T2T LATINO WINTER 2015-16

ers have to work inside and outside of the house, most times leaving them with little time for themselves and their families. I place a larger value on quality time with my children than I do on material things like designer clothing, cars, etc. When I'm with my family, I'm with my family and when I'm working, I'm working. I try to live in each of those moments separately, enjoying every aspect of my life to the fullest. T2T: Do you find it hard as a woman to succeed in your career field? Being an independent producer is difficult; being a Latina producer is even more challenging. There are credibility issues and a lack of trust in women's ability to not just produce, but also direct projects. The great equalizer for me has been my business savvy and my ability to fund some of my own projects. That has removed the need for me to obtain a "permission slip" from the gatekeepers in this industry. It has also allowed me the opportunity to prove myself on my own dime. One of the things I think is important for women in this business is to not compete with the men, but rather learn to form profitable partnerships with them. Each of us brings something to the table that is worth money. We have to leverage our skills in a cooperative way. T2T: Tell something about yourself that you have not shared with the public, but it could help encourage someone else. I don't have some kind of master plan for my life. I'm seizing every opportunity that is presented to me and I'm pursuing all of my interests every day. I'm not saving anything for later, because later may never come. More than anything, I'm a servant who wants to leave a legacy of hope and opportunity for the next generation. To those sitting on the sidelines, waiting...I would say, "Find someone in your life that will push you off the cliff, forcing you to fly." T2T: Share a motivational quote that has inspired you to achieve. A rising tide will lift all boats. - John F Kennedy To learn more about Stuart Films Group or upcoming ventures, follow her on FaceBook at: https://www.facebook.com/ emelynstuart or visit http://www.stuartfilmgroup.com/ This is not the last you will be hearing about Emelyn Stuart, Atlanta… so brace yourself for more! ■

She has written and performed two, one woman shows, Lagrimas de mis Madres. This an autobiographical play based on the women in her family. The other is entitled, I Will Not be Silenced, based on the life of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz. Maria has performed her work at various colleges/universities, and conferences; both locally, as well as nationally. She has been featured on Bronx Net, News 12 and NBC Latino. In 2010, Maria received the V-DAY Award for special recognition from the Eve Ensler Foundation for “someone who has suffered or witnessed violence, and then does extraordinary work to make sure it doesn't happen to anyone else in their community.” In May 2013, Maria’s book, Transitions of a Nuyorican Cinderella, won second place for best poetry in English, at the International Latino Book Awards. Maria is a Career Counselor and Coordinator of Diversity Initiatives in Career Services at Fordham University. In May 2014 Maria received her Masters in Latin American and Latino Studies from Fordham University. Maria’s current journey and passion is heading the group called Latinas Plus 50. 50

"In honoring these women I am creating an annual event that will highlight the selected Latina Women over Fifty who will be invited to a community gathering where they will have an opportunity to speak about their journeys of challenges and accomplishment. The women will be honored in their specific field, be it community activism, education, law or the arts. In addition to an annual event celebrating the vibrancy of these women and their contributions to society we hope to have other events where they can shine a light on their passions." ~ Maria Aponte Interview with Maria Aponte

CMC: In a society that ostracizes women for getting older, does our traditional ways of reversing and respecting our elders clash or embrace women over 50?

MARIA: In terms of ostracizing women for getting older, I think that culturally we are in a transformation as to how society views women and aging. There seems to be a contradiction on how you are supposed to age, versus the idea that being youthful is still the cultural norm for acceptance. The whole concept of women aging and becoming acceptable is only about a decade old. And for as much as we publicly like

T2T LATINO WINTER 2015-16

to say that aging is becoming, it is not. When you look at the workforce, and I say from the perspective that I work in a career counseling field, many older women and men are being phased out from their jobs because of age. When you work in a very youth oriented workforce, the older woman tends to be shut out because they are placed in a category where they are related to the younger person’s parents age, or what their concept of the older person should be and then the dynamics of interaction change. As for our traditional ways of revering and respecting our elders, and if our traditions respect or clash or embrace women over 50, depends on the person their background and family experience. In general, I feel that Latina women over 50 are expected to age a certain way and grow into the roles that traditionally has been held for older women. I think older women are embraced up to a certain extent.. Again it goes back to the role that the woman has defined for herself from the very beginning in the family. So basically we are accepted for what we project to our families and to others. The tricky part is when one decides after several decades of doing the same thing and makes a decision to change, and then it can become an issue for the rest of the family and your friends. You are no longer in the familiar role and that is the litmus test. Will they accept the “new you” or not? Also, because we live in a more modernized version of what our parents and grandparents knew in terms of life style, cultural differences and interest, I think that if a Latina over 50 is clear about what she wants then the support will come and should be there.

CMC: In your opinion, what do women over 50 have an advantage of over their younger sisters?

MARIA: What women over 50 have over our younger sisters is time. And this is a personal comment not all women over 50 may feel this way. I feel that what we have is the wisdom of time. We have lived long enough to speak from that place of having had to deal with life in all its stages, and have learned from our mistakes, and are willing to move forward and let stuff go when we have to. I am not saying that younger women don’t. I know some amazing younger women who are handling their lives very nicely and with strength. But there is something about being a woman in her 50‘s and older and the aging process that fortifies the spirit, especially after you have gone through menopause. There is a feeling of coming full circle with certain aspects of your life. That feeling of not doing enough or wondering if what you’re doing works passes. You are more settled in who and what you are. Because we have been through so many changes in terms of culture, society, history, modernization those life experiences do not come over night. I can certainly tell you that I don’t live nor think the way I did in my 20’s 30’s or 40’s. For me, those were what I call the “life ladder lessons.” It was in learning how to deal with loss, death, and being alone that taught me how to be my best friend first. So imagine going through all of that and realize that you can have a certain kind of peace of mind that you value more than material things?

space to acknowledge their experiences. Particularly that my generation and older grew up in a time where it was not expected of us to be no more than what society wanted us to be. Our roles in life were delegated to being uneducated, working menial jobs and never to have the opportunity to go beyond high school let alone college. But that was not the way it was many of us went to college started careers were the groundbreakers for many social and cultural programs that started and are still in existence today, or have transformed into other programs. I wanted to create a program that would honor those women who stayed behind to make something work for their children and their community. Create a space for them to tell their stories and histories, especially their histories because history is slowly disappearing. I think it would be good for our younger sisters to learn from these women in their own words what it took to get to this place where information is dispensed instantly from those who put in those years of work and sacrifice to make life a lot easier for others today. The future goal for Latina 50 Plus is to host an annual conference where Latina Elders will be invited to facilitate workshops where they can share their expertise in various career fields. Also, to start a scholarship fund for Latinas over 50 who may be in need to perhaps go back to school, take that art class, or self-improvement workshop, Of course this is the concept and as the program grows this will be open to discussion. This is my vision as a Latina Elder and as someone who works with young folks all the time because I am surrounded by college age students and I hear their stories too. I want to leave them a blueprint and a map to the future and to let them know that with time it does get easier and life is meant to be lived with peace of mind and heart. Thank you Maria Aponte. To support Maria in her latest endeavor, the 2016 Latina 50 Plus Nominations are open! Who is your favorite Latina 50 Plus? Nominations open until Feb. 25 th. The official website for this event is http:// www.latina50plus.com/.

Final question.

CMC: If you could please speak to the motivation and inspiration that moved you to begin this journey, can you tell us where would you like to see these event lead and progress to?

MARIA:

The reason I started Latina 50 Plus is because I felt that the voices of the Latina women over 50 was not being given that

The young songwriter has performed in different markets of the US as well as international events like the Miss América del Mundo 2011 in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. In 2012 SEICH released his second single, “Sueña,” produced by RCeez, which debuted on the top ten of one of the most important Latin stations in Atlanta, LA Mega 96.5 FM. Thanks to the fans, it continued playing for 3 months. After finishing the recording process in Miami, Florida with producer Fernando Pastorino, the songwriter is ready to release his new album and its first single, “Cuando Hay Amor,” in early 2013. The people involved in making this album possible include Boris Milan (three time Latin Grammy winner), Glenn Schick (who has worked with Justin Bieber, Paulina Rubio), “El Papa” Pastor (bassist of Grammy Award winner artist Carlos Vives), along many others. Thanks to hard work and perseverance, SEICH is paving the road and climbing upwards to become one of the most promising performers in Latin pop and he is ready to bring his music in your town! ■

Obie say’s “His church is an advocate for community outreach one of the essential reasons why he worships and is an active member.” Obie’s favorite past time is raising his 7year-old son, and spending quality time with his beautiful wife Jennifer. Ambassador Obie’s hiatus from the entertainment industry was solely intentional. He aspired and desired to see his son transition from making his first steps, to hearing his son speak for the very first time, all of the memorable gestures and moments a parent treasures. Obie replies, “The entertainment industry is rather demanding in regards to your personal and family time, therefore leaving me with no other option but to evoke a standard, family first.” Ambassador Obie’s success as a singer/ songwriter is no overnight success story. He fought diligently; he was tenacious and driven to acquire his childhood dream of respectfully earning the right to be known as a world-renowned artist. A plethora of doors proceeded to open and cultivate his musical excursion. In 1998 Obie recorded his first CD (Locales) with BMG records, his official coming out as a professional artist. Unfortunately, Locales didn’t receive rave reviews, however it created a buzz, and the verdict did not hinder his progression. The Man behind the Music continued to cultivate and refine his gift. Three songs catapulted, soaring on the Hot Latin Billboard charts reaching the number 10 top singles on the Billboard. ELIZABETH ULLOA Continued From Page 32 should be a model” and “Wow, you’re better looking in person.” Here’s how to make sure you’re putting your best face forward.” 1. Start out in front of the mirror. Try different angles, poses, etc. to find your best side. 2. Pose in different lights and spaces to discover what works best for your complexion. 3. Find your natural smile. Don’t force it. If you’re cheeks start to hurt, it’s too much. 4. Wear your most flattering colors – keep in mind that what looks best in person might not look best on film. 5. Backlighting is better than overhead lighting. Overhead lighting causes excessive brightness as well as unflattering shadows. 6. Stance counts. Stand at a 45 degree angle as opposed to facing the camera directly. Put one foot slightly in front of your body but keep the weight on the back foot. Try different “hand on hip” stances. 7. Keep your head level and then drop your chin slightly. Hello big eyes! 8. Whenever possible, shoot from a position slightly above you, so you’re almost looking up into the camera. A lot of picture perfecting is trial and error, so snap until you can snap no more! SMART BEAUTY: HOW TO MAKE YOUR EYES AND LIPS APPEAR BIGGER / FULLER NATURALLY I often get asked “how do you make your eyes and lips appear bigger / fuller naturally? "For eyes the key is fuller lashes! it gives the illusion of a wider opened eye. Concentrate on the root of your lashes wiggle the wand back and forth extending the brush upwards for gorgeous volume. I personally like to concentrate on the center of the lashes for better results; also choose a high volume formula mascara It's all about using the right brush and formula! The key to a natural fuller lip is to carefully line your lips with a flesh tone lip liner. Begin lining your lips just above your natural lip line. Next, apply a peachy nude lipstick onto your lips for warm skin tones and Pinky nude for cool skin tones. Finish by applying a clear gloss on the center of the lips to create a natural highlight ( as you can see here ) it gives the lips a subtle sheen making them appear fuller and luscious! and Voila! its that simple. Bi-lingual beauty expert Elizabeth recently became Neutrogena's first Hispanic Beauty Ambassador and she is thrilled to be part of an amazing brand. Elizabeth says "I completely identify with Neutrogena and feel very excited to be able to represent a brand that believes health and beauty go hand in hand and that shares my philosophy of a clean, fresh and natural appearance. This is a wonderful opportunity that fills me with great pride as I am able to share my experiences and communicate a message of beauty, wellbeing and confidence to Latinas." ■
