When Jim Karadimos and husband Bill Beever purchased their home in Northborough in the late 1980s, they had no idea how their lives would begin to intertwine with one of the area’s most prominent attractions: New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill. About the same time when they purchased their home, the Worcester County Horticultural Society purchased Tower Hill. As regular visitors to the Garden they learned more about the natural environment and drew inspiration from the Garden incorporating ideas into their own landscaping. In 2012, Jim joined the Board of Trustees and, in 2016, he became Board President.

Jim’s leadership style is inclusive, and his vision was to create ways to make the Garden more accessible to all people. During his tenure, membership, attendance, and donations all grew allowing for the expansion of the gardens, art and plant exhibits, and cultural events.

Jim and Bill want to help protect the organization they love. They decided to include the Garden in their estate plans through a bequest. This gift qualifies them for membership in the Perennial Circle which honors people who make a planned to New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill.

Honoring Philip

Marsha Platt has always enjoyed walks through the woods. As a member of New England Botanic Garden, you can often find her strolling along the woodland paths, enjoying the wildlife, or exploring the gardens.

Marsha and Phil Platt’s association with the Worcester County Horticultural Society began at the flower shows held in downtown Worcester. Initially they attended the shows to support Phil’s mother’s love for flower arranging and became avid members as the organization made the move to Tower Hill.

Phil was a geologist and had travelled extensively for work. He and Marcia settled down in Grafton to raise their family. They visited Tower Hill often, walking the wooded paths and watching as the gardens developed over the years. They were inspired by the ever-changing landscape, diverse plantings, and seasonal displays of flowers.

Sadly, Phil passed away in 2019. To honor Phil and their shared love of New England Botanic Garden, Marsha made a gift to support the building of the Ramble – the newest garden for children – and named the Stone Stacking area in Phil’s memory.

On a recent visit Marsha was delighted to hear that visitors, young and old, are having fun building rock towers and playing throughout the Ramble. Even more importantly, Marsha is thrilled this gift will help inspire the next generation of nature lovers, gardeners, and horticulturists.

A Place for Self-reflection

Sitting quietly in contemplation brings solace to Indira Maini. When she moved to Northborough in 1986, she discovered the beautiful botanic garden less than ten minutes from her home and visited frequently to reflect and renew her spirit. Soon visits included her children and family, continuing a tradition of visiting gardens and appreciating the beauty of the natural world that her mother shared with her in India.

A gardener who takes risks, and tries the latest ideas and methods, Indira revels in the notion that a garden is never completed. She is inspired by what she sees and learns at the Garden and returns to her own garden full of energy to make a change.

As a new board member, Indira feels a responsibility to make sure the Garden is accessible to all who enjoy nature and gardening.

“The gardens, staff, and plans are always evolving! It has been a delight to see our membership rapidly expand, watch 1,700 second graders explore the natural habitats, meet visitors from New England and beyond, and be part of an organization that teaches people the importance and joys of the natural world.”

In 1994, Gigi Casella asked her friend Anita to volunteer at a plant sale.

Inspired by her friend Gigi’s love for the Garden and seeking a place quite different from her day-to-day role as a Principal Analyst/Program Manager at National Grid, Anita was hooked from the start. Thus began a joyful 28-year relationship with New England Botanic Garden that would give Anita volunteer opportunities to greet guests, give tours, serve as a Garden Explainer, plant, and weed gardens, and most recently learn to drive a golf cart to make the gardens more accessible for all. Volunteering became a relaxing, stress-free opportunity for her to connect with nature and people while helping to grow the gardens.

Anita has become one of the Garden’s greatest ambassadors now inspiring others to love the Garden she cares for so much. Her joy is radiant, her energy infectious, and her care for others and nature a true

example for all. She is always willing to help to see NEBG thrive for future generations.

Anita and her husband now spend winters in Florida where she has started volunteering at the Wonder Gardens in Bonita Springs. However, each spring she looks forward to coming home to New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill.

“Wandering the pathways and sitting in the gardens helps to calm my mind, tune into all my senses, and open my creative channels. It’s a real laboratory for letting your mind be open to solving problems of any kind. In my case, it’s memorizing and arranging musical scores.”

For loyal member Roderick MacDonald, Music Director of the Worcester Symphony Orchestra, New England Botanic Garden is a place of creative inspiration. His senses awaken as he walks through the gardens and forest paths, inhaling the fragrances, seeing the beauty, and listening to the sounds of nature. This immersive meditation enhances Roderick’s ability to memorize his musical scores, tune into his inner ear, and create the score “out in the wild.”

Roderick is a world-renowned trumpeter and Maestro whose impressive career included engagements in Germany and Japan where he performed as the principal trumpet of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Virtuosi Saxonia (Dresden), the Bach Collegium (Munich), and the Super World Orchestra in Japan, among others.

He delights in the design of the Garden flowing from indoor spaces to formal gardens to natural wild spaces. Like the music he works on in the Garden – well-known scores with new arrangements – he is comforted by the endurance of old growth and inspired by the constant rebirth of new plantings.
