Supporting Our Values

Community

Botanic

at Tower Hill

In many ways, horticulture is a universal language. When people come together in nature, they find belonging and a shared purpose. New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill seeks to develop inclusive experiences for a diverse community so all can access its educational and recreational resources.

Conservation

As individuals become disconnected from nature and the environmental challenges that society faces, the Garden must consider how to continue to keep these issues in the forefront of the public’s mind. Outreach programs, lectures, and interactive exhibits work together to strengthen commitment to nature and transform citizens into climate advocates.

Discovery

We can learn so much about the world around us when we look closer at nature. As young people engage with the great outdoors, they gain greater understanding of complex systems and are empowered to be innovative throughout their lives and committed to the environment.

Wellness

As mental and physical health is severely impacted by an increasingly technological world, experiences that connect people to nature are proven to improve mental and physical wellbeing in people of all ages. The Garden is committed to reducing barriers and connecting more people to the natural world.

Creativity

From stunning displays to curious exhibitions, the Garden encourages people to appreciate different perspectives and express themselves. When connected to the science of horticulture, people find deeper connection to the natural world and are inspired by plants to find innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing needs.

While the Garden is relatively young, New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill's parent organization, the Worcester County Horticultural Society has been a staple of the community since 1842. The Society, located in the heart of downtown Worcester, MA, was a place for the community to gather in celebration of horticulture.

In the early 1980s, the Society saw the need to reexamine how to remain relevant. They took the bold step to reinvent the Society as a public botanic garden, dedicated to connecting people and plants.

The Garden's mission is to “create experiences with plants that inspire people and improve the world.” We see it as our responsibility to create lasting connections between people and plants through our programs in addition to developing significant living collections and creating aesthetically stunning displays.

Today, New England Botanic Garden consists of 171 acres of formal gardens, subtropical conservatories, stunning bulb displays, vegetable gardens, an heirloom apple orchard, woodland plant collections, trails, meadows, ponds, and conservation land.

The Garden strives to remove barriers for people to learn about plants. Through this conscious effort, we have welcomed more visitors than ever before and are proud that they are becoming more representative of the community around us. To reach those who cannot visit our Garden, we have a unique outreach program that improves the urban tree canopy and instills as sense of pride and ownership of the urban forest in City of Worcester residents.

New England Botanic Garden continues listening to the community and the result is a rich and authentic experience where we truly deliver on our bold mission statement. Our continued evolution with and for our community is what has kept us relevant since 1842.
