Mineral County… nty… Over the rainbow, but under the radar

There are new paved roads to boat ramps somewhere in Montana, and big new parking lots by trailheads, but not here. If you are searching for the old Montana, with carpets of trees covering ridge after ridge of mountains, with a sky so big it seems that the horizon can’t quite hold it, where we measure the acres per person, and not the other way ‘round, then welcome to Mineral County!

A quick look at the numbers tells the story. Nearly 90% of the county is set aside for recreation. There are over 680,000 acres of public land, and under 4,000 residents. Hundreds of miles of trails follow streams or traverse ridges to countless lakes. Here is a place you can still spend a hot day in July wading a trout stream, or a crisp morning in November on the trail of a bull elk, alone in the wilderness. If just the thought of it makes your heart beat a little faster, you’ve come to the right place. Mineral County has something for every outdoor enthusiast. Whether it’s backcountry skiing or a scenic drive down a back road, whether you carry a rifle or a camera, whether you dream of a down bag under a blanket of stars or a pillowtop under a handmade quilt, you’ll find it here. And what if you’d prefer to spend a day or two in the Great Indoors? Well, we’ve got that, too.

Why not plan a wild winter weekend in Mineral County? Take I-90 to it, not through it! Kick it off by gathering with friends for dinner and a murder at a Mystery Dinner Party. To add a little spice to the meal, it’s served at Ghost Rails Inn, Montana’s most haunted B&B. Spend the night at the Inn and the next day in the outdoors, possibly skiing at Lookout Pass, or exploring hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails. When the sun goes down, come in out of the cold for the best pizza in the west at Billy’s, or steak and lobster (really!) at the Old Montana Bar & Grill. There’s poker at the O Aces in Deborgia, and always a wild time at Sportsman’s in Alberton, not a family tavern. Rent a cabin for up to five people at the Black Diamond Guest Ranch for a real Montana experience. Wake up to snowmobile or crosscountry ski trails right outside your door, or spend Day 2 of your getaway treasure hunting in the antique shops in St. Regis or the Valley Bookstore in Alberton. Another night? Another day? Why not! There’s always more to do in Mineral County! by Thom Garrett

Alberton, Montana 59820 Here’s a place where ghostly trains still run on time, a place where mountains live large, where rivers crash through timeless gorges, and where folks still take time to get to know you. Welcome to Alberton, Montana, an old railroad town without a railroad, but still with plenty to offer. Alberton is the gateway to the Alberton Gorge of the Clark Fork River, western Montana’s best white water rafting, not to mention some of the best fly fishing anywhere. If you prefer an arm chair to a raft, there is also an historical book store worth the drive and the time to browse. You can grab a latte at the knitting shop or lunch at the cafe, pick up groceries (and liquor) at the local grocery, find all of your hardware and western needs at the feed store, and end your day with a good conversation at either of the local bars. and a night at Ghost Rails Inn, one of the “Best of the Rockies” according to one of the “Best of the Rockies” according to Bedandbreakfast.com. Alberton is charming reminder of simpler times just off Interstate 90 at exits 75 or 77, west of Missoula.

2010: July 17 - Alberton Railroad Day: An historical, fun family event . . .

““100,000 Used Books.”

That’s what the sign on the highway sa says. Actually it’s more like 150,000, bbut who’s counting! Lo Looking for a good read? So Something no longer in print? So Something rare? Or just like to bbrowse old books and visit the cl classics? Keren Wales invites you to stop by. There you will find ppaperbacks, hardbacks and books in and out of pprint. Keren runs the book store with help from SScarlet the cat and other members of the family. Her father ran it before her, until 1981. Many of the books are ones he picked up on bicycle trips across the British Isles. Keren says: “My aim is to get as many books as possible into the hands of the people who will love them the most. Running a used book store with old books that are sometimes hard to find is a public service, like a museum or a library. There’s value in just having those books there for the public to look at, even if they don’t take them home.” You will find the store nestled in a mountain valley along Interstate 90, in the town of Alberton, Montana, just 30 miles west of Missoula, Montana, and 140 miles east of Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho

he luxurious experience of a Bed and Breakfast for the price of a motel room in Missoula! You not only get a better night’s sleep, but you‘ll wake up to a wonderful home cooked breakfast in a newly remodeled historic hotel. What could be better? If you check the reviews online, you ‘ll see why quests are raving about Ghost Rails Inn. Thom says “People who stay here don’t know what to expect.” They love the nine comfortable guest rooms on the second floor, each with a unique theme celebrating the history and natural beauty of Montana, not to mention the relaxed hospitality p y and outrageous stories of their hosts. Many guests spend a night at the inn because it is a convenient stop as they travel I-90. Many make this their base camp for wilderness adventures or shopping excursions. Still others, especially quilters, have chosen the In to host their 2 and 3-day retreats.

ATV’rs/Snowmobilers come from Washington, W Idaho, and Montana to explore the hundreds of miles of perfect trails into the mountains. The trails, scenery and experience are great and so is the food. Always a Good Time and Great Pizza . . . at Billy’s Good times have been had, had by Montanan's and trav travelers alike since the bar, now known as Billy Bigriggers, was built in 1921. That makes this one of the oldest bars in the country. Yes, there have been extensive remodels, but the Montana tradition continues — good food, (Best Pizza in the west), good friends, and good fun. And did we say, the best Pizza (and Calzones) in the West? Eat in, take out, or just hang out. Check the schedule for the live bands. Where else can you dance on an original dance floor, from 1921. A small shop with a lot to offer! Not to mention this is the only Quilt shop in Mineral County. As you drive I-90 it will take you just 60 second to take the exit, drive 3 blocks to 3rd Ave. and turn west. Now you are at a quaint little quilt shop, with sewing and quilting notions, patterns and books and a good selection of fabrics. Be sure to ask about the Flower of the Month patterns/kits. Judy is very friendly and we are sure you will have good time, and you can be back on the interstate in another 60 seconds. But we hope you will visit the other businesses in Superior first.

MONTANA’S BITTERROOT VALLEY Bring your family to the Bitterroot Valley to discover the best that winter has to offer — where the cost is reasonable and the scenery unsurpassed. At the southern end of the Valley, Lost Trail Powder Mountain sits atop the Continental Divide on Highway 93, where Montana and Idaho meet. With over 300 inches of snowfall every year, these uncrowded slopes offer an excellent downhill ski and snowboard experience. There you will find high-speed lifts ready to take you to the top! There is no better way to explore Montana’s winter wonderland than on a pair of cross-country skis. In the Bitterroot, you can immerse yourself in a world of beauty, solitude and adventure. The Chief Joseph ski area, open to the public and maintained by the Bitterroot Cross Country Ski Club, is just across from Lost Trail Powder Mountain. There are trails of varying length and difficulty and are all rarely crowded. Here you can ski trails once explored by Lewis and Clark as you traverse the magnificent Continental Divide amongst towering pine forests. The Bitterroot Mountains receive hundreds of inches of snow each winter - more than enough to allow your skis to take you places limited only by your imagination. Conversely, our Valley snowfall rarely exceeds 6 inches, so finding suitable lodging, food and drink, is never a problem. For those looking for more of an adventure, the hiking trails in the Bitterroot and Sapphire ranges — the two mountain ranges that envelop the Bitterroot Valley — offer hundreds of miles of trails that climb deep into the wilderness. So, strap on your snowshoes and pack for enjoyable adventure! Be sure to visit the Forest Service’s web site for more information on ski trails and conditions before you depart. Welcome to Montana’s Bitterroot Valley Winter Wonderland!

Stevensville

Where Montana Began These books and several others from the publishing house of Stoneydale Press, located in Stevensville, Montana, take a look into truely local history of Stevensville, MT and the people that are making Montana history today. By The Discovery Writers Jean Clary • Patricia B. Hastings • Jeanne O’Neill • Riga Winthrop. A new 256page book titled “First Roots: The Story of Stevensville, Montana’s Oldest Community” chronicles in incredible detail with text, photographs and drawings the story of Stevensville, the oldest permanent community in Montana. Edited by Robert J. Bigart Published by Salish Kootenai College Press, this book chronicles the story of how St. Mary’s Mission in Stevensville, Montana, served the Salish Indians and other Roman Catholic residents of the Bitterroot Valley in its early years. By Mario Locatelli* – Also known as the “Montana Mountain Goat”. The Bitterroot Valley man known as the “Montana Mountain Goat” because of his mountain climbing exploits – he’s topped 50 of the highest peaks in the United States including Mount Denali in Alaska, plus Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, since he reached 70 years of age – has just released a book about his exploits as a climber.

By Craig E. Thomas - He has, however, and the result is a 224-age book titled “Regurgitations of a Montana Woodsman” in which he writes on such topics as his accident and the efforts to rehabilitate his body and continue as an active outdoorsman and woodsman, about his close-knit family, some of his outdoor experiences.

Hospitality first . . . Established in 1841, Stevensville is Montana’s first permanent settlement. Situated in the Bitterroot Valley, the Stevensville business community brings together outstanding costumer service with small town charm and hospitality to create the air of a Norman Rockwell painting. The historic St. Mary’s Mission prides itself on the chapel that has been faithfully restored as well as the attached study and dining room and the house/pharmacy of Father Ravalli. Father Anthony Ravalli was recruited from Italy and was Montana’s first Medical doctor. It was he who built the mission and his handiwork that furnishes it’s interior. There’s a great gift shop manned by a wonderful volunteer staff who are always happy to help you select a unique Montana gift. There is much more to see and do in Stevensville. The first Friday of every month residents and visitors alike are treated to “First Friday” when the stores stay open late to show off their wares and “Stevi Hospitality”. On December 5th & 6th check out ‘A Montana Christmas’ a two day event for the whole family, or catch ‘You’re a good Man, Charlie Brown’ at the Stevensville Playhouse. GLACIER From its inception in 1997, Glacier Ice Rink

(GIR), Missoula Area Youth Hockey Association (MAYHA) and Glacier Hockey League (GHL) have operated as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation. The mission of the organization is to provide affordable hockey, figure skating, and recreational skating to a wide range of citizens of all ages and skill levels.

Since GIR’s enclosure in 2003, and the addition of a second sheet of ice in 2006, use of the facility has expanded to now include more than 12,000 recreational skaters annually, more than 400 boys and girls playing youth hockey, and adult hockey programs that welcome more than 700 participants. That translates into 1,500 to 2,000 skaters weekly, or 70,000 visits per year. With the addition of the Missoula Maulers, an additional 30,000 spectators visit the facility annually for a total of approximately 100,000 users. The ice sheet in the enclosed rink is operational from August through May. The outdoor sheet follows a more seasonal schedule and is operational October through March. Notably, GIR is the only facility in the state of Montana which houses two sheets of ice in one location. As the GIR continues to improve its facilities, more area youth and adults are responding as greater numbers of those living in Missoula and outlying areas take advantage of the programs offered by the rink. Public skate times are filled to capacity with enthusiastic participants of all ages. Young children share the ice with parents and grandparents, while teens find the rink a welcome place to meet friends and engage in an activity that is both fun and healthy.

-Missoula Area Youth Hockey Association (MAYHA) includes approximately 20 In-house and 10 travel hockey teams. Youth hockey programs are available in the fall, winter, and spring. Fall and Spring Inhouse programs, winter schedule runs Monday-Friday. -Glacier Hockey League (GHL) includes 6 leagues of recreational hockey. 50 teams total. Fall and spring leagues, winter leagues play SundayThursday nights.

-GIR’s user groups: • Women’s Hockey Association of Missoula (WHAM) • University of Montana men’s and women’s hockey teams • Missoula Figure Skating Club (MFSC) Providing recreational and competitive skating opportunities for Missoula area youth and adults since 1997 - Officially sanctioned by the United States Figure skating and Home Figure Skating Club to Glacier Ice Rink • Missoula Maulers Junior A Hockey Team
