BITTERROOT VALLEY

T U O B A L L Y 4th Annual T I N U IT IS A M M O C Darby Bitter Root Darby, Montana and the Bitterroot Valley community are proud to again host this year’s Elite Professional Bull Riders’ competition. The community and businesses in the Valley have come together to provide entertainment and create another reason for travelers to visit, shop, and recreate in the Bitterroot Valley. The town of Darby may be small, but make no mistake … it is mighty! This is Darby Logger Days 10th Anniversary which means that for 10 years, this stalwart group of community volunteers has drawn one of the valley’s largest event crowds while raising money to give back to the community. Go Darby! To be fair, however, remember the community of Stevensville – “Where Montana Began?” The crowd in the photo on page 20 says it all. I understand that around 10,000 showed up for Founders’ Day in 1941, when Ravalli County’s total population was only 14,000. Impressive, to say the least. Now, let’s see if we can top that. We hope to see ALL of you at the Mission this September 24th. It is only the 170th anniversary. There is more! From River to Ridge just printed an historical piece for The Creamery Picnic. If you don’t know where The Creamery Picnic is held, where have you been the last 99 years? August 5th and 6th, the Stevensville Civic Club is again hosting this community and familyoriented event. Mark your calendars to attend, or better yet, sign up to volunteer, and be a part of your Bitterroot Valley history!

Descendants Reunion June 17–20, 2011 at the Darby Clubhouse Whether you’re from pioneer stock or are newer to Darby Tiger Country, you are invited to the Darby Bitterroot Descendants Reunion (formerly the Darby Pioneer Reunion)! You will be glad you did not miss this weekend of music, food, auctions, camaraderie, and history. There will be activities and games for all ages including entertainment for the younger Darbarians. Programing includes: Moonshine & Lake Como Area, The Salish, Lumber & Timber Life, Cowpoke Poets, Darby Diaries, Judge Solander, and Darby Looks at Itself, a study done in 1945, among others. Old-timers will recall their family connections and everyone is encouraged to bring photos, exhibits, albums, scrap books, and CD’s, to share their Darby area family history. Throughout the weekend there will be a Silent Auction of antiques, arts, crafts, tools, & gift certificates.

Friday Evening: Montana Beef Association Hamburger BBQ and a pot luck of local favorite side dishes. Only $5 per person. A Musician Jam will keep toes tapping and feet a dancing. Everyone, bring your instruments!

Speaking of Bitterroot Valley history — the Museum at the Old Court House puts on a number of great events. Check out their schedule on page 30, and help raise some very important money for history education. Support the museum by stopping in at Mikesell’s Jewelry (on Main in Hamilton) for a raffle ticket. Who knows, you may be the winner of the $1,440 Montana Sapphire Ring that Mikesell’s graciously donated in support of the museum’s mission.

Saturday Evening: Montana Beef, Pork, Lamb, and Elk BBQ. The

I was supposed to use this space to talk about the National and International Rodeo and Wrestling Champion – Russell Friend. He’s the rider pictured on the cover, and will ride at the Elite Bull Competition this summer. Then, I started thinking about the amount of selfless volunteer work that goes into every event in every community throughout the Valley. You volunteers are the type that “get back on” when you get “bucked off,” just like Russel, and you focus on tasks with the intensity of an International Wrestling Champion, just like Russell Friend. You have a desire to be successful, like Olympic Athlete Russell Friend, and you are “in it” for the long haul, like Russell with 15 years in Professional Bull riding. YOU are the ones to promote. Without your hard work, your donations, your patience, your ability to put aside your opinions for “decision by committee,” the world famous, record-setting, Elite Professional Bull Riders, like Russell Friend wouldn’t get to visit the beautiful Bitterroot Valley!

Bull Shippers & Yarn Spinners. Pre-registration is required Other shorter field trips are also scheduled including one up Lick Creek to tour the historic old logging camp.

Make sure to attend the Elite Bull Competition in Darby, Montana on July 8 and 9. Russell wants to say “thanks,” and so do I. Eric Elander, Publisher From River to Ridge

LOLO

Relics & Roses Lolo, MT Gateway to the Bitterroot

Traveler's Rest State Park marks the location of a Native American campsite at the crossroads of travel routes which linked centers of commerce and culture for centuries. In September, 1805 Lewis and Clark stopped here to prepare for the difficult mountain crossing on the advice of their Shoshone guide, they called the nearby creek "Travellers Rest." Lolo, Montana still offers travelers a nice spot to rest at the crossroads to worlds of recreation in the Bitterroot Valley and Mountains. Home to the country’s third largest Wilderness Area, you can get away, as far you as want. Spend a little time in Lolo before heading south up the Bitterroot river, or west to the hot springs or over Lolo Pass to Lochsa Lodge. You will be pleasantly surprised. The Hayloft restaurant is a community gathering place where the bar is always hopping for the “over-age” crowd. You will find bargains at Crazy Horse Consignment and don’t miss the new Relics and Roses antiques shop, just opened in mid May. The ladies there are very creative.

New to Lolo, this quaint store is an eclectic collection of wonderful antiques, shabby chic, used furniture, and home decor. Lots of mirrors, tables, benches, and chairs, with an air for the “rustic garden.” New items arrive daily. You won’t be disappointed!

Friday-Saturday-Sunday — August26-28 Daly Mansion Grounds, Hamilton Montana With nationally sanctioned events and just plain fun for all ages, the Bitterroot Scottish-Irish Festival is quickly becoming one of the major events of its kind. The weekend of August 26th-28th will be full of food, music, dancing, and friendly competitions. Celebrate the Scottish and Irish heritage of the Bitterroot Valley, meet clan representatives and find out more about your own ancestry. Watch jousting demonstrations performed by knights in armor, listen to and watch the spectacle of world class Pipe and Drum competitions, as well as Highland and Irish dancing. Get out there and toss a caber or hurl a stone. The action is not limited to adults, children can participate in their own athletic events. There will be demonstrations all weekend including Blacksmithing, leather-working, fly tying and casting.

Highland Games Competitions

Scottish Highland Games originated over a thousand years ago. Kings and Clan Chiefs held them to select recruits for their entourage and armies. They also helped keep men-at-arms and camp followers out of trouble and impressed rivals with how strong and skilled their men were. These continued as trials of strength, speed, agility, and skill at the various religious fairs, military musters, and cattle fairs from medieval through early modern Scotland. The tradition came to America with our Scottish ancestors and continues to this day. Competitions are sanctioned by the Scottish American Athletic Association. Local and out of town athletes alike are encouraged to participate. Each event is scored individually (much like Track and Field), and the athletes can sometimes win metals or other prizes in multiple events. For more information, please go to www.SAAAIdaho.org

Hammers — The Scots’ hammer has a shaft made of cane or PVC pipe, an overall length of 50 inches and comes in 16 pound and 22 pound weights. They are thrown standing, with the athlete winding them several times around the head, and releasing them straight behind the thrower. Weight for Distance — This graceful athletic event uses a

weight consisting of a ball on a chain thrown with one hand in a combination of balance, rhythm and power.

Weight Over Bar — The Athletes throw a 56, 28, or 42 pound weight, usually with a ring attached. Each athlete is allowed three attempts to clear a height before the bar is raised. The victor is the thrower who clears the highest bar.

Stone Throws — There are two categories. In one, the competitor throws a 24-28 pound stone from a stationary position. In the second, called Open Stone, a 16-20 pound stone is thrown with an approach similar to the Olympic shot put. Cabers — The caber is a long pole held at the narrower end,

while its thicker, more unwieldy end points skyward. Once the athlete lifts it, they run forward, stop and heave it end over end. The competitors strive for accuracy, trying for the perfect “twelve o’clock” toss where the caber lands dead straight ahead with its narrow end pointing away from the athlete.

Pipes and Drums

Bagpipes are a strong image of Scottish culture both playing solemn laments and leading armies to war. Pipe bands were

406.363.6323 www.bitterrootscottishirishfestival.org

considered instruments of war and an essential element in many military regiments. Their sound could cut through the din of battle and be heard for miles, intimidating enemies, and inspiring comrades. The music of the pipes tells tales of glorious battles, lost love, and sad defeats. Saturday’s Pipes and Drums Competition is sanctioned by the Saskatchewan Pipe Band Association.

Highland & Irish Dancing

Highland dancing, one of the oldest folk dance styles may be named after legends, famous people, historical events and even inspired by a piping tune. In early times, Scottish kings and chiefs would watch men compete. Those that showed great stamina and agility were chosen for the armies. Now, of course, women also compete with the men in many categories — Solo, National Dances, Twosomes, and Sets. The festival hosts both demonstrations and nationally sanctioned competitions of many styles steeped in tradition from Scottish Country Dancing, and Highland Dancing, to Irish Dance with its intricate footwork.

Live Concert

Potcheen, Colorado’s Premiere Celtic Pirate FolkPunk Rock Band, will be Saturday evening’s featured concert. Potcheen is the Irish word for moonshine, the raw

whiskey that comes from an illicit still, and this music is as raw and real as it gets. The band plays pub standards, favored by every Irish band to hoist a pint, but they play them with energy, enthusiasm, and expertise. Formed in 2003, Potcheen has been touring nationally, fusing Irish music with bluegrass, rock and punk in pirate and drinking songs. They have been listed in the Denver Post underground music poll "Top 100 Bands in Colorado" 2005 – 2011. Members Christian Blochinger on drums, Manuel Nuñez on bouzouki, Laura Quam on fiddle, Melissa Ivey on guitar, and Ryan Waller on bass deliver some of the finest Celtic rock you're ever likely to encounter.

Red McWilliams

Red is a top Celtic music performer and entertainer from Puyallup, Washington. He travels far and wide to sing, play and share his love of Scottish and Irish culture and history. We are more than pleased to have Red back as Master of Ceremonies this year, as his breadth and depth of knowledge in putting on a great festival simply cannot be matched. He has become a wonderful friend to all involved in the festival, as his affable nature and laid-back demeanor are a natural fit in the Bitterroot Valley.

The Order of Epona The Order of Epona is a medieval equestrian performance troupe based out of Fort Collins, Colorado. They perform live, costumed, medieval period skits and stunts on horseback including jousting and live steel sword fighting.

STEVENSVILLE

Celebrate 170 years of Community Stevensville, Montana

Montana’s First Pioneer Community “They came not to exploit, but to enrich not to take but to give, not with guns and flags, but with the Cross and the Word of God.” On a cool autumn day in 1841, a small band of travelers made their way along an ancient Indian trail through a valley, now known as the Bitterroot, in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. They had come by invitation from the Salish and Nez Perce people: six men in black robes, accompanied by an Founders Day Celebration 1941, looking south. escort of Indians and guided by frontiersman, Thomas Fitzpatrick. At a signal from their leaders the little band stopped beside the river that traversed the valley. There, on September 24, 1841, Jesuit Father Pierre Jean DeSmet planted a rough-hewn wooden cross on the east bank of the Bitterroot River, thus, establishing the mission which he named St. Mary. Over the years a community, St. Mary Village, developed around the little mission, later the Fort Owen trading post and finally the town we now know, Stevensville. On that day Jesuit Father Nicolas Point observed,

“Everyone thought we would be able to find nothing better anywhere else.”

Providing stewardship and grants to community nonprofit organizations. A Montana Celebration of Fine Wine! Last year Linda Eals and many of her associates successfully orchestrated a wonderful party/fundraiser at the Daly Mansion featuring fine wine and gourmet foods served by the best restaurants in Western Montana. The event raised tens of thousands of dollars. That success helped Linda attain her dream in the guise of a new non-profit (501c3) organization, Montana Cares Foundation. Her goal is to help other non-profits in the Valley fulfill their mission. Montana Cares organizes successful fund raisers to help other non-profits succeed. Sunday August 14, 2011, from 5-9 on a wonderful private estate in the Bitterroot, you can enjoy connoisseur wines and gourmet small plate entrees, accompanied by a live dance band and good friends. The best part is that it is all for a good cause, supporting non-profits that have great missions but may be struggling to raise needed funds. Tickets are $150 per person and can be picked up at Provisions in Hamilton. Learn more about Montana Cares and join the Montana Celebration of Fine Wine and Food, call Linda or visit online.

Kris Prather Kris Prather, a native of Stevensville, Montana, had set her goals at a very young age to become a jockey and race at the notorious tracks of Kentucky. She had the good fortune to be mentored by two of the greatest women jockeys in history, Donna Brothers and Julie Krone, the Racing Hall of Fame rider. They offered her guidance and encouraged her to pursue her dream of becoming a jockey. By 2000 Kris was setting records at Turfway Park in Florence, Kentucky. Kris set high goals and went after them with vigor, she wanted to be the best and was well on her way when her dream was ended by severe injuries in 2004. Fortunately Kris is equally adept in writing and painting. She now funnels her boundless creative energy into these talents. Kris has a wonderful artistic style that mixes both impressionism and realism. She has prints of her work available and also does commissions. Prather also published her first young adult novel, The Horse Tamer’s Niece, that centers around the fast-paced, colorful world of racing and has completed both a mystery and a literary novel which have not yet been published.
