Their rustic western lighting is just that — made from old wagon wheels, lanterns and hand forged iron pieces. They custom make their lamp shades right here in Hamilton, Montana and carry metal and rawhide shades in many sizes. Take the time to browse their Western Art Gallery. You will find the work of some of the nations leading western artists, including Andy Thomas, Martin Grelle, G. Harvey and Nancy Glazier. You are always welcome, as are questions and special requests. You can also find top quality in shoes and clothing accessories. Leather vests, as well as canvas and wool vests are part of the traditional old west style of attire, but with a modern cut these vests are very stylish today. Visit the store on Hwy. 93 in downtown Hamilton, or their web site, for a classy welcome to the beautiful Bitterroot Valley.

Lewis and Clark O L LO Rested Here …

Shouldn’t You?

Traveler's Rest State Park marks the location of a Native

American campsite at the crossroads of travel routes which linked centers of commerce and culture for centuries. In September, 1805 Lewis and Clark stopped here to prepare for the difficult mountain crossing on the advice of their Shoshone guide, they called the nearby creek "Travellers Rest." Until 2002, historians conjectured that the only tangible physical evidence of the Voyage of Discovery still in existence was William Clark’s name crudely carved into a stone pillar near Billings, Montana. They also believed that the creek Meriwether Lewis called Traveller’s (sic) Rest located at the confluence of the Lolo and Bitterroot Rivers. Then archeologists found evidence of the Corps of Discovery's latrine and central fire at what is now the Traveler’s Rest State Park. This gives the Park the distinction of being one of the few sites in the nation with physical confirmation of the group's visit.

Park Hours (Day Use Only)

April 1 to May 30: Daily 9 am – 6 pm June 1 to Aug 31: Daily 8 am – 8 pm Sep 1 to Oct 31: Daily 9 am – 6 pm Nov 1 to March 31: Mon through Fri, 9 am – 4 pm, Sat and Sun, 12 pm – 4 pm The Park is closed New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas

The park strives to present an interactive, interpretive experiences that bring history to life. Schedule a guided tour or take the self-guided walking tour to easily get in touch with America’s premiere explorers. This is more than the re-hashing of a familiar story, Traveler’s Rest has incorporated elements of astronomy, archeology, geology, botany, and Native American arts into a well-rounded and unique experience. Travelers’ Rest State Park is in a unique partnership. Owned and managed by Montana State Parks, its education and interpretive programming is provided by the Travelers’ Rest Preservation and Heritage Association.

Chief Victor tried to balance the two worlds. He was a devout Catholic and, at the insistence of the priests, tried to encourage his people to take up agriculture. Yet, he also held on to may Salish traditions and lead bison hunting parties as well as war parties against their enemies.

Chief Victor died in July 1870 while on a hunt in eastern Montana. It was reported that his body was returned to his homeland and buried at St. Mary’s Mission.

Chief Victor remained a hunter and warrior. He resisted the pressure to relocate his people and force them into an agricultural way of life but he never allowed hostile behavior towards white settlers at the hand of his people. His political savvy when

Where Montana Began:

Established in 1841, Stevensville is Montana’s first permanent settlement. Situated in the Bitterroot Valley, the Stevensville business community brings together outstanding customer service with small town charm and hospitality to create the air of a Norman Rockwell painting. The historic St. Mary’s Mission prides itself on the chapel that has been faithfully restored as well as the attached study and dining room and the house/pharmacy of Father Ravalli. Father Anthony Ravalli was recruited from Italy and was Montana’s first Medical doctor. It was he who built the mission and his handiwork that furnishes its interior. There’s a great gift shop manned by a wonderful volunteer staff who are always happy to help you select a unique Montana gift. There is much more to see and do in Stevensville. The first Friday of every month residents and visitors alike are treated to “First Friday” when the stores stay open late to show off their wares and “Stevi Hospitality.” Every Saturday from spring through fall the local Farmers Market is held on Main Street. In June, Western Heritage Days will immerse you in a mix of local history and fun. Look to the skies in July during the 2nd Annual Summer Fest to see hot air balloons but head over to the St.Mary’s Pavilion for the food, beer, and games. August is famous for the Creamery Picnic, the 98th one is being held this year and will feature food, music, dance, raffles, and all around good fun. September has a golden glow thanks to the Northwest Honeyfest where you can find all things honey. Sample honey based food, watch cooking demonstrations, ogle the bee product vendors, and of course there will be great entertainment. There are tasty restaurants with incredible coffee, desserts and teas. You can stop into the Blue Parrot any time to see what’s new with the Victorian Ladies Tea Guild. Enjoy a tea with fine music and experience the history, dress and dance of days gone by. A memorable experience awaits you in Stevensville, Montana - “Where Montana Began!” Contact the Stevensville Main Street Association, 777-3773 or visit www.mainstreetstevensville.com, for information about community events for you to enjoy.

The Stevensville Historical Museum features displays

and artifacts emphasizing the early history of the Bitterroot Valley and Stevensville. Historical items include the belongings of early settlers, particularly the missionaries who came to convert the Native Americans. Other exhibits provide an overview of the area’s original cultures (Salish, Nez Perce, and Lemhi Shoshone), background on Lewis and Clark’s two visits, and a look at later residents, from orchard farmers to today’s cyber-commuters. On the heels of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, another famous personage entered the saga of North Idaho’s combination of hunting and history — famed Canadian fur trader and map-maker David Thompson, whose exploits from 1807-1813 brought the first commercial fur trading enterprise into the region, well before any American free trappers. Now a major book outlining Thompson’s efforts to establish fur trading posts in the area has been published. Titled Sometimes

Historic St Mary’s Mission Imagine the vast wilderness that was the northern Rockies in the fall of 1841. You and your little band of fellow Jesuit “blackrobes” have trekked westward across half a continent and now you stand on the bank of a wide, shallow, sparkling river coiling through a broad, meadow-lush valley nestled in these wild highlands. Above you the majestic, snowmantled crags of a breathtakingly gigantic mountain range rear up, and behind you rises a pine-shouldered ridge of gentler peaks. For hundreds of miles in every direction — and weeks or months of painstaking travel — there is nothing but untrammeled nature — no towns, no farms, no roads. But there are people here, of course: strong, proud Indian tribes. You have come to this wilderness, in fact, at the request of the people of this land. From your little wagon-carts you take out your tools and you begin the hard work of building the mission named for St. Mary, the first permanent settlement in Montana. Now, nearly 170 years later, St. Mary’s Mission still vitalizes the culture of western Montana. A visit to St. Mary’s, famously known as “Where Montana Began,” is a valuable educational experience, indeed, but it’s also a magical step back into American history and the people and places of the Old West that makes Montana such a special place. Tour St. Mary’s Mission in Stevensville for an unforgettable American journey.

In the 1820s, two decades after the pioneering

exploration of Lewis and Clark had passed through this same valley, a group of Iroquois came to the northern Rockies with Hudson Bay trappers, and

some of them married into the Salish tribe. Their descriptions of the Jesuits and their religion and knowledge fascinated the Salish and their neighbors, the Nez Perce, so they sent several delegations in the 1830s to St. Louis to obtain their own “blackrobe.” Thus, Father Pierre DeSmet arrived with two other Jesuits and three lay brothers on September 24, 1841.

However, in the late 1840s the relationship became strained, and so the Jesuits decided to temporarily close St. Mary’s. By terms of a Conditional Bill of Sale in 1850, John Owen, a former army sutler bought the saw and grist mills and farmed fields for $250.00 Thus was born the trading post, Fort Owen.

The missionaries quickly built a chapel from cottonwood logs and two small cabins; a larger church was built shortly thereafter. Father DeSmet, a tireless traveler, journeyed twice to the west coast to bring the first wheat, oats, potatoes and garden seeds, as well as cattle, swine, and poultry to Montana. He also traveled eastward to recruit others, and in 1845, a brilliant young Italian Jesuit priest named Father Anthony Ravalli arrived at the new mission. He was Montana’s first physician, surgeon, pharmacist, miller, architect, and sculptor. The county is named for him. He even planted an apple tree, which still bears fruit.

Father Ravalli and the Jesuits returned in 1866, reestablishing St. Mary’s Mission about a mile south of Fort Owen. They built a little chapel (the fourth), to which was attached a study, dining room, kitchen and a story and a half barn. St. Mary’s was made the Jesuit mission headquarters for the Rocky Mountain province. In 1879, the size of the chapel was doubled. It is to this period that the entire Mission complex has been restored to the peak of its beauty.

For several years, St. Mary’s thrived as a tiny island of civilization in an ocean of wilderness. (There was even a band that played works by European composers.) The relationship between the Jesuit missionaries and the Salish Indians thrived as well. Religion classes were held twice a day. The fathers taught their hosts how to farm crops and tend livestock. There were classes in reading, writing, and arithmetic taught in the Salish language. Masses in the Mission chapel were well-attended, and visitors came from other tribes.

“Your tour of Historic St. Mary’s Mission begins in the Visitor’s Center where you can explore the museum, art gallery and gift shop. Following a brief video that provides a foundation for the walking tour, experienced guides take you on a visit of the Mission complex which includes St. Mary’s Chapel with attached residence, dining area and kitchen, Father Ravalli’s cabin and pharmacy, Chief Victor’s cabin which houses a Salish museum and the old dove cote. Throughout the buildings are original hand carved furnishings by Fr. Ravalli, Salish artifacts, historic documents and photos of days gone by.” —Article by Lyn R. Fisher

The Bitterroot Valley is the place I call home, but it is

much more. Yes the scenery, the recreation, the artists and their art, the shops, bars and restaurants are as good as anywhere in the country — actually better. "Bitterrooters" all have their opinions and we may or may not all agree, but more importantly, as demonstrated by the number of fund raisers in the first four months of 2010, the Bitterroot Valley is a community. A community that comes together and supports ‘the cause’ and puts aside the discussions – we come together because we truly care about one another and want to help in anyway we can. There must have been a fund raising event every weekend, probably more, the first four months of 2010. I was privileged to help out at some of them – the Crab Feed for Hamilton United Businesses, the CASA Auction and the Chamber Banquet. The Youth Home and Ravalli County Museum had dinners – there were raffles, dances and more good times for good causes than I can remember, and it doesn’t stop there. Darby, Hamilton, Corvallis, Victor, and Stevensville all have major events coming this summer to help fund their programs. It is these events, the people and their passion that keep the Bitterroot Valley alive and prosperous.

Nothing could be better, and I know. My son was the beneficiary of one of these fund raisers and I want to personally thank each of the over 400 friends and acquaintances that showed up that evening, to help offset his medical expenses with their contributions and support. To the caterer that donated food, businesses, friends and churches who donated items, and numerous friends that setup early and stayed to cleaned up until midnight – Thank You! This is beyond a doubt what really makes Montana's Bitterroot Valley beautiful.

Take a day to play in Hamilton!

Hamilton is a welcome spot for visitors touring the Bitterroot Valley. This big small town, the county seat of Ravalli County, is a great place to visit or live. Surrounded by beautiful scenery and recreational opportunities there are also dozens of community events to draw a crowd.

There are lakes, rivers and streams for fishing, as well as bike trails and more back country than you could explore in a lifetime. Opportunities abound for adventure whether you are into camping, backpacking, horse riding, river floating, or ATV-ing. Hamilton is just big enough to provide both cultural amenities and material goods, while staying just small enough for a western town flavor. The Hamilton Playhouse boasts one of the finest community theaters in the region. (Turn to page 40 to learn about some of this summer’s productions.) The Ravalli County Museum and the Daly Mansion will satisfy the history buffs in your family. Antique shops, galleries, candy stores, and everything from fashion to furniture plus fun and funky shops are all just around the corner.

Come to the River … and Fish It Whether you prefer to walk, wade, or float the Bitterroot River offers a premiere fly fishing experience.

The Bitterroot River in Southwestern Montana is characterized by pristine waters and fine fishing. There are opportunities for

fishermen who prefer wading as well as those who prefer floating from a raft. Many access sites provide the wading fisherman ample stretches to spend a few hours or the entire day. From its tributaries of the Bitterroot River’s East and West Forks to its finale at the Clark Fork you can find a variety of fishing opportunities including Rainbows, Cutthroats, Browns, Bull Trout and Brookies. West slope Cutthroats abound here due in part to the catch and release regulation for this species. Many of the tributaries such as Skalkaho, Tin Cup Creek, Blodgett Creek and Sleeping Child have good populations of catch able Cutthroat. Upper tributaries of the Bitterroot, above Painted Rocks Reservoir on the West Fork such as Blue Joint and Martin Creek are full of Brook Trout. They provide some excellent small creek fishing for lighter two and three weight rods.

The Bitterroot in its seventy plus miles of meandering is almost like two rivers. The upper stretches have a higher gradient and

are characterized by the runs and riffles of a free stone river. Most of the stone flies hatch here. The stone nymphs prefer oxygenated water and the upper runs provide this. The lower stretches of the river are much slower because of a more gradual gradient. You The Bitterroot in its seventy will find an occasional riffle plus miles of meandering is and run but mostly longer and deeper pools. Here you find almost like two rivers. larger hatches of mayflies. There are twenty or more combinations of stretches that can be floated and fished as well as waded on the Bitterroot. Stream access laws in Montana are very friendly to fishermen and there are plenty of available walk in sites providing miles and miles of river bank to fish. A copy of the access laws are available at any local Licensing Agency.

The Bitterroot is well known as one of the finest dry fly fishing rivers in the state. The dry fly fishing season begins mid- March and ends in

late November. The first major hatch is the Skwala (stonefly) in March. If the conditions are right the fish will key on the imitation pattern for a full 6 weeks. One pattern to use for the Skwala is a bullet head fly tied with a black egg sack and dark body. The underwing is dark brown or black and the overwing is tied in bullet head style with dark brown premo-deer hair. The fish seem to look for this hatch to begin their yearly feeding habits and with the size of this stonefly they can build bulk fast. The summer fishing is best described as a continual opportunity for dry fly action. With the abundance of mayfly hatches the expert as well as the novice fisherman can do well. If you are not capable of matching the hatch a well tied attractor pattern such as a stimulator will usually do the trick.

Photo Nelson Kenter The late fishing which continues into November includes patterns such as the October Caddis and Midges. The October Caddis are large and can be fished with an imitator that is size #8 or #10. The Midges on the other hand are from #20 #24. In between the major hatches include Pale Morning Dun, Blue Winged Olive, Green Drake, Salmon Fly, Golden Stone and several varieties of Caddis. The mayflies are typically sizes 14 - 18 with the exception of the Green Drake which is size 10. The Salmon Flies should be fished with a size 6 or 8 and the Golden Stones are sizes 8 - 10.

September and Labor Day mark an end to the heavy tourist season.

With children going back to school and vacations over, the river lulls to a slower pace. As October approaches the local Montana people begin to ready themselves for the winter. Many begin gathering wood that they will use to heat their homes during the next 6 months. Elk and Deer seasons begin later in the month and it is time to sight in that favorite rifle. After the third weekend in October you can count on having the river almost to yourself almost the entire day. The only local fishermen you will bump into are those like yourself who have chosen to spend their time fishing rather than hunting. Late fall fishing can be the golden opportunity that you have been waiting for. By Bill Bean

Nelson Kenter Photographer

A native of Wisconsin, Nelson Kenter has lived in Missoula, Mont. since 1980. He has served as staff photographer for the daily Missoulian Newspaper, and been a frequent contributor to Regional magazines and many other publications. After receiving an associate of arts degree from the Western Wisconsin Technical Institute, Kenter combined professional experience with an average 150 days a year in the "great outdoors" to build a library of nearly 10,000 images. The result is a body of work with a deep understanding of nature and wild animals, outdoor recreation and mountain splendor. Kenter's unique contributions include such remote vistas as the Bob Marshall Wilderness' Chinese Wall, elusive animals such as mountain lions and bald eagles, and wilderness events like 400,000-bird flocks of migrating snow geese. His base in Missoula puts him in easy travel range of Glacier and Yellowstone national parks, Lewis and Clark Voyage of Discovery landmarks, the National Bison Range, Flathead Lake, the Missouri River, numerous national wildernesses, and wildlife refuge areas. 43 R-R_Mar2010.indd 43

SKALKAHO STEAK HOUSE Skalkaho Steak House guests spend the summer months enjoying fine dining and drinks on the outside patio while viewing Montana’s wildlife, elk, bighorn sheep, deer and even humming birds. You will be amazed at the 300 some hummingbirds that gather around the feeders and foliage each summer. The Bitterroot Valley of western Montana is confirmed as the summer breeding home of three species hummingbirds, the Black-chinned, Calliope, and Rufous You will be hard pressed to find a better restaurant, with a more natural entertainment or more beautiful scenery than here, just 10 miles southwest of Hamilton. The Skalkaho Steak House is a labor of love for the Roses. Most of the crew are family members. They have a stake in providing an enjoyable experience and a satisfying meal. You will feel the friendly atmosphere the minute you walk in the door. It was a natural progression to open the steak house after the fire of 2000 took out both hay and barn. They had already spent many years in the outfitting business treating hunters to fabulous meals. The Skalkaho Steak House was soon known as the best steak house in the valley. Steak is not their sole forte, however, their seafood will spark memories of fine dining at the coast.
