Chairman’s Chat I will start this issue by welcoming Peter and the team from Cherished Vehicle Insurance (CVI) who are our official insurance partner. They are a company who share our passion for motoring and understand what our cars and our hobby mean to us. Club members receive a 25% discount on policies that will be tailor made to your requirements. I know that a few members have already called them and all were very happy with the quotes. Spring has finally arrived and the 2010 show season kicked off with Race Retro at Stoneleigh Park. Clive and I had a wander down to see how the event had progressed in the second year of Live Promotions input. To be honest I felt that it needs a lift and the sad looking live stage with Steve Parish gamely making the best of a poor situation pretty much summed things up. There is a lot happening over the next few months starting with Santa Pod on the 17th quickly followed by AGM on Sunday 18th April. We would be delighted to see lots of members in attendance to discuss their ideas and what direction TIPEC should be taking during 2010 and beyond. There is a formal element to proceedings which is wrapped up fairly quickly and the bulk of the morning is spent informally sharing ideas and discussing suggestions. A free lunch is provided and afterwards we have access to the museum to wander at our leisure. Please confirm your attendance to Club Office by 10th April so that we know how many to cater for. Planning for the Porsche Show on June 5th/6th is well under way, with the majority of the entertainments already confirmed. We plan to hold more seminars at this year’s event; Jim will be back by popular demand to answer questions and discuss 944 maintenance. Tickets for Saturday night’s party are already selling well, I have seen the band and confirm that we are in for a great night. Tables can be reserved, please drop me a note to book your requirements. We have reserved rooms at the Holiday Inn Leamington Spa, which has secure parking. Cost is £70 including breakfast for a double room. Call 01926 425 555 and quote POR. This offer ends on 3rd May. Sadly the test track will not be available to us on Sunday because Jaguar has enforced a blanket holiday over half term and it’s their team which manages the track. Unfortunately there is nothing I can do to remedy the situation and apologise. Happy polishing and I am looking forward to seeing you at an event during 2010.

Porsche 918 Spyder concept The surprise star at this year’s Geneva Motor Show was a brand-new condept design from Porsche, the 918 Spyder. This gorgeous machine is a demonstration of intent from Porsche, showing that striving for fuel economy does not have to mean sacrificing real sports car performance.

With a top speed of 198mph and a 0–62mph time of only 3.2 seconds, the 918 Spyder concept is nevertheless capable of 72mpg and emissions are as low as 70g of CO2 per kilometre. All this is acheived because the car is a petrol/electric hybrid, with a mid-mounted V8 and three additional electric motors. It’s a parallel hybrid, meaning that the powertrains can operate separately or together in various combinations— all selected from the dashboard much like switching a modern car into ‘sport’ mode. Porsche were initially at pains to explain that the 918 Spyder is just a concept, nothing more, but they have since started accepting letters of intent from potential buyers and talking about there potentially being cars based on this design on the road in five years.

TIPEC would like to welcome the following new members to the club, all of whom joined recently. Smarter Security Systems Ever sat down and added up the cost of what’s in your garage? Let’s take the car, your pride and joy, then there’s your tools which have taken years to collect … you may have track day equipment or spare parts stored away, and of course not forgetting the normal things such as golf clubs and bicycles. With that cost in your mind, now think how long would it take for an intruder to enter your garage and remove your prized possessions. On the right are three photographs showing a security smoke generating machine filling a standard single garage full of dense (non harmful) smoke within 30 seconds. If you can’t see it, you can’t take it and with an additional high powered strobe and siren inside your garage it’s not the place to be. How does it work? The wall or ceiling mounted smoke generating machine requires connecting to an intruder alarm panel, this needs two devices to activate (ie. a door contact and a movement sensor) to prevent false alarms. The fluid inside the smoke unit is injected onto a warm plate which turns the fluid into the smoke and with the aid of a powerful fan it’s released into the area. The fluid in the system will generally provide you with three to four activations and will alert you via the control panel when the fluid is getting low. The smoke unit can be connected to an existing intruder alarm system or supplied with a standalone system. Smarter Security Solutions is a company recently started up by a TIPEC member. Autosport International (The Racing Car Show) The South East Region were invited to join the Brighton & Hove Motor Club on a coach trip to the 20th Autosport Racing car Show at the NEC on Thursday 14 January, which is a joint event with the Pistonheads Performance Car Show.

The weather has been atrocious, with white fluffy stuff everywhere, but it didn’t stop this trip and what a fantastic day we all had. Travelling on the congested motorways by coach, especially in these poor weather conditions, is definitely more enjoyable than driving our cars along congested boring motorways (even when we are behind the wheel of our Porsche). We were able to relax, chat and enjoy the company of like minded colleagues. The show was fantastic with something for everyone, including shopping opportunities at hundreds of trade stalls. We had the added bonus of free entry on one of the two trade days, so didn’t suffer the usual crowds that occur on the public days. Autosport International covers all areas of motorsport, both professional as well as grass roots, from karting right up to Formula 1. During the first two trade days, the show incorporated Autosport Engineering, a specialist show dedicated to motorsport and high performance engineering. Autosport International covers two trade days, followed by two public days, and so is unique in catering for the industry and motorsport fans alike. The unique mix of major team launches, international drivers, the very latest products, a live indoor motorsport arena and Autosport’s central stage created an exceptional showcase event that offered an excitingly wide range of interests. Over a hundred of the world’s best racing drivers joined forces to take part in David Brabham’s Celebrity Karting Challenge on the Friday, offering members of the public the rare chance to race alongside their motorsport heroes.

The Live Action Arena is the UK’s largest indoor racetrack, which this year has a new tri-oval layout, with an arena seating 4,750 people and is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the show. We were amazed by the best of driving talent as they raced around the indoor racetrack, performing daredevil stunts to really get your heart rate going! From single seaters, historic saloons and rally and drift cars to the very latest GT coupes and full-on oval races, the show had us on the edge of our seat from start to finish. The original Stig, 1984 FIA World Rally Champion Stig Blomqvist, was amongst the drivers. The highlight for me was the Porsche stand, which was dominated by the new 911 GT3 R making its world debut. The car is built by Porsche’s Motorsport Department at the Weissach Development Centre and will be delivered to customer teams the world over in 2010. The 911 GT3 R is powered by a four litre six-cylinder boxer engine delivering maximum output of 480 hp transmitted to the rear axle by a sequential six-speed dog-leg gearbox. The 911 GT3 R weighs just 1,200 kg and its increase in engine size by 0.2 litres offers 30 hp more than the Cup model. The car is based on the extra-wide body of the 911 GT3 RS. Flared wheel arches added on to the body, both front and rear, bear clear testimony to a wider track than its predecessor and a huge rear spoiler really adds the finishing touch. Like all second-generation versions of the 911, the new 911 GT3 R also comes with striking LED rear light clusters. An anti-lock brake system (ABS), traction control and an e-gas with ‘throttle-blip’ function make it much easier to get used to this new GT3 racing car than its predecessor, meaning that the new model is also more appropriate for the ambitious amateur racing driver. The base price of the Porsche 911 GT3 R is 279,000 euro excluding VAT, so sadly I would have to be a banker or rob a bank to buy one … but it’s nice to see and touch our dream machines. Classic Preservation Central Region visited Classic Preservation in February, Paul Bird tells us all about it. This event seemed a very long time coming to fruition. The proprietor, Paul Standley, had been along to club night on a couple of occasions and enjoyed a beer and a chat as well as offering an invite to visit the workshops. Unfortunately the busy schedule of events in 2009 meant that it never happened so I promised we would sort something out for early in 2010 and so it was that this became the first outing of the year. Saturday 22nd February was the agreed date and whilst the sun shone, snow and ice on all the grass verges were a reminder we were still in the midst of the coldest winter for many a long year. Classic Preservation is a small independent business that specialises in the repair and restoration of classic cars, with a particular emphasis on Porsche and Mercedes. The workshop is well hidden down a country lane in Wythall and had it not been for the satnav I would probably have figured I was going wrong and turned around. Those that didn’t arrive via Wythall came in from the other end of Houndsfield Lane and had to brave the ford … running about 12 inches deep after the snow! There were various Porsches parked in the lane when I arrived which confirmed I was indeed at the right place and I headed into the workshop to be greeted by some well known friends and faces as well as the aroma of bacon. A mug of coffee in one hand and a bacon buttie in the other seemed the ideal start to the event and we all spent the better part of an hour eating, drinking and wondering around looking at the various project cars in the workshop. There were four 911’s in evidence as well as an Austin Healey, a Mercedes SL and various others under covers. When everyone had been fed and watered Paul introduced himself and began to explain the business and the nature of work carried out for customers. The firm offer high quality restoration work to discerning owners looking to protect their investment and extend the life of their cars.

The spray booth had a 911 shell completely stripped and on a jig so that the shell was effectively upside down for painting the underside. This was clearly a major restoration project but Paul made it clear that much smaller repair work is also welcomed in the workshop. The most enlightening part of the visit involved another vehicle in for work; a 911 cabriolet that looked like a decent car and reminiscent of many I see at club events on a regular basis. Lifted in the air Paul pointed out that this ‘tidy’ car had some serious issues and we were invited to feel the ‘kidney bowls’ to see the extent of the deterioration that was hidden from sight. A large chunk of corroded metal was pulled off easily by hand … I thought this was a sound justification for my choosing to purchase a 928! Seriously though, it demonstrated that a nice looking car can be hiding some major problems and so it is well worth having a proper inspection carried out on a prospective purchase before parting with the hard earned! This particular car was going to set the owner back in the region of £1,500 per side to resolve the kidney bowls although of course this would give the car another 25 years of life.

An early orange 911 had been stripped out and was awaiting parts for an ongoing restoration and rebuild to specific customer specification. I would love to see this one when it is completed as it reminded me of John Anderson’s car that adorned the club stand at the NEC in November last year. What was clear as the morning wore on is that Classic Preservation offer a high quality service and a real enthusiasm for their work. There is no interest in providing a ‘botch job’. Work is carried out with an attention to detail aimed to ensure that the repair will most likely outlive the car and so offers a real assurance to the owner who is planning to keep a car for the long term. If you have an older car in need of some care and attention or are looking at a possible classic purchase it would be worth giving Paul a ring to discuss your requirements. A pre-purchase inspection might save you from buying the wrong car or can at least arm you with information so that you can knock down the purchase price enough to allow for any immediate work required. If your car is in good order then the firm offers preventative treatment using Dinitrol wax and this must make sense to stop the rot before it takes hold! Many thanks to our hosts for an enjoyable and eye opening visit as well as the food and hot drinks that were enjoyed by all. I received a considerable number of comments back from attendees after this event, a testament to the success of the event and the hospitality we were extended. Thanks to Paul Standley and the whole team at Classic Preservation. If you are interested in discussing requirements please contact Paul and the team direct.

Save Donington The legendary racing circuit at Castle Donington is under threat of permanent closure. Graham Waller attended the Save Donington awareness raising event on 7th March. Castle Donington is home to a once-great motor racing circuit. Originally opened in 1931 at a cost of ÂŁ12,000, Donington Park was the very first permanent motor circuit in the UK. It was used as a military vehicle storage depot during the war years. Eventually, the circuit was bought by Tom Wheatcroft in 1971 who funded the rebuilding of the track and it was re-opened in 1977 and was thus revived as a premier motor racing circuit in the 1970s. It hosted just one Formula 1 event, but became a favoured home to motorcycle racing including the MotoGP, the British Touring Car championship and the British Superbikes. It is also home to the largest collection of Grand Prix cars in the world, contained in a museum started by Tom which now houses over 100 cars.

However, in 2007 Tom Wheatcroft sold a 150 year lease on the land. After much hard work, the new leaseholders secured the rights to stage the Formula 1 Grand Prix for 17 years from 2010 and subsequently secured the necessary planning permission. However, the track required a major upgrade and after commencement of the work, funding dried up and further sponsors could not be found in time. Subsequently, the circuit lost the rights to Formula 1 and due to the disrepair of the circuit, all other events

Park Racing Association Club (who donated a cheque for £2,000) and Leroy Boyce, the organiser of the Facebook group and Savedonington website. Kevin suggested that racing could well be back at the circuit before the end of the season but would require a £1.5m investment to repair the track. There was a display by the rescue team using the ‘jaws of life’ to enter a car and evacuate a casualty and discounted entry to the museum also proved popular. followed suit forcing the leaseholders into administration and therefore reverting the lease back to the Wheatcroft family. Unfortunately, Tom passed away in 2009, never realising his dream of seeing F1 back at Donington. The lease and land is now back in Wheatcroft hands, currently owned by Tom’s son, Kevin.

All in all a fantastic, sunny day albeit a little cold. Let’s hope that racing returns and Tom’s work was not in vain.

A grass roots Internet campaign was launched and Savedonington. co.uk attempted to gain public support for returning the track to racing. 12,500 people joined the Facebook group in an effort to get supporters to attend an event at the circuit on Sunday 7th March. Given the timescale involved (which was very short), they did exceptionally well as over 2,000 fans of Donington turned up in a multitude of cars. From a Porsche perspective, there were well over 30 Porsche’s on display from a 1972 912 through to a 10-plated GT3 (yes, only four days old!) During the day there was a chance to visit an autojumble in the Exhibition Centre, which turned out to be so large that it spilled in to the car park. Many corporate exhibitors were there including Santa Pod and some race starters (yes, you know the ones: short skirts, high heels). There were interviews with Kevin Wheatcroft (owner), the Donington

Maintenance report: Stewart Gordon’s 944S2 Stewart Gordon’s recent experience with a stripped camshaft is a salutory warning to anyone with a 16 valve engine

In April of 2009 I had my cam cover color coded. As I had it off, while I had the cover removed, I did a visual check of the camshafts, chain and tensioner. I was mainly looking for the shape of the inlet shaft teeth, to see if there was any hooking shape taking place, and the color of the tensioner slipper (the whiter the better) along with the height of the adjuster. Everything looked fine including the chain tensioner slipper. I did however change the ‘O’ ring seals for the spark plug holes and the cover gasket at the same time. I was on my way to our regional meeting five months later and I spotted the temperature gauge up in the red zone. It turned out that the water supply elbow to the throttle body had decided to come out and had lost all the coolant. The ones fitted to the 1991 cars were superceded by aluminum ones on the ’92 models and the 968s. After waiting a long time for it to cool enough to start adding water, I made a quick fix with the aid of a hammer and a tie strap to hold the elbow in place until I could get it sorted properly. From that time until a few weeks ago (and a couple of oil and filter changes later) I could not get rid of the cam follower rattles. I decided to remove the cam cover again and have another look to see what was going on. I discovered that the timing chain was running higher on the tensioner and also found on closer inspection the inlet cam shaft had three chipped teeth, caused probably by the slackening chain, and had stripped out both the camshaft and the tensioner along with the ‘J’ pipe. I ordered a new chain from my local Porsche Centre and gave them the part numbers for the top and bottom slippers. The top slipper was available at £7.99 but the bottom slipper, despite having a part number, wasn’t available. They did however advise me that Porsche sell a service kit for the tensioner for £80.49, but weren’t able to tell me what it contained. They agreed to order a kit on a sale or return basis, which duly arrived a couple of days later. I didn’t need to open a box, it came in two polythene bags: one bag contained the top slipper and the other

bag contained the bottom slipper and two screws. This was the kit, £72.50 for a bottom slipper and two screws. Shocking! This nylon slipper is working out at least twice the current price of gold, which might well be something to do with their recent price alignment with Europe. Anyway, getting back to the camshafts; I had asked the price for a replacement shaft and it was going to work out at over £600 for a new one. I checked on eBay, but no luck. I had won a set of 16 cam followers a few weeks before, but not knowing I needed a shaft didn’t bother to bid. Bummer! I phoned John Mitchell who had said he had a shaft welded a while back and it worked out fine. I phoned around a few specialist welders in my area and eventually found one who said to bring it over. He just looked at it and said no problem, he would tig weld it for £20 and it would be ready in two hours. Brill! I picked up the shaft and with a little a bit of tidying up over the course of an hour with a Dremel, a straight edge and some Tipp-ex, it was back to size and shape. I took the tensioner and camshafts over to Brian Miller Motors in Edinburgh who checked everything over with me and gave it the all clear to build, even giving me a loan of the special tool for re-fitting the camshafts to the head. I finished off the rebuild and 50 miles later, after a run in, the top end was silent. I have since then removed and cleaned up the elbow and refitted it with Araldite—it is holding fast. Porsche don’t have a service interval for this chain or tensioner, but if you are ever buying a 16 valve 944, check to see whether this job has been done. If it hasn’t, then make it a priority. A broken chain or slipper failure will be catastrophic to your engine! Writing & photography by Stewart Gordonr

Probably the

oldest 944

in the UK Cavan Hulbert is perhaps not that well known as a club member and his car is seldom seen at club events because of family and work commitments but on special occasions both surface and offer us a glimpse at a rather special car. You would be forgiven for thinking this was just another early 944, well looked after but nothing out of the ordinary, but when you start to take a closer look there are a few signs that something about the car is different. To start with the car has the early berber cloth interior and is sitting on Fuchs wheels and then there is the unusual ‘pebble dash’ finish on the rear spoiler that isn’t like the usual smooth finish on these cars. Cavan is happy to explain that these apparent anomalies are because this car is a pre-launch 944, first registered on 24th March 1982, only a few months after the car was first shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show. More importantly the registration date precedes the official UK launch of the 944 and records show that the car spent the first six months of its life as a press test car. Cavan believes the pebble dash rear spoiler and fuchs wheels were used as the factory didn’t yet have the normal parts used on production 944s and so used those from the 924 Carrera GT The rear of the car shows another strange anomaly; there is no raised 944 badge, presumably as the factory didn’t have one, so it is replaced with a sticker! In addition the car has no preservation coating and a removal roof; two more features from the Carrera GT. According to Cavan the first proper owner was a lady from Wolverhampton and Cavan acquired the car in 1985, moving on from a much loved 924 into the

updated car. Cavan was actually planning to buy a brand new 944 but spotted this one in the showroom with around 17,000 miles on the clock and it was a bit cheaper so he opted to save a little cash and went for the light metallic blue car that he still owns 25 years later! When you see this car at a show take some time to look around as it’s a real blast from the past. I defy you to find any part of the car that doesn’t look in showroom condition and is not totally original. The car has only covered 36,000 miles from new and its condition reflects the limited use. Nowadays the car is really only used for concours competitions and the growing collection of trophies on the mantelpiece suggest the concours judges love this car as much as Cavan does. The car won the TIPEC national concours in 2005 and 2007, separated by a visitors choice win in 2006, and has won the PCGB national concours as well as numerous other trophies at classic shows across the Midlands. In short this is a stunning car and is a testament to the care and attention lavished by it’s owner. Whilst it’s not a high mileage car it still takes many hours of hard work to keep a car as clean as this 944 and the additional provenance just adds to the overall package. Taking the normal annual service cost and replacement tyres out of the equation, Cavan explains the total repairs cost for the car over his 25 years ownership amount to just £12 for a clutch slave cylinder. Apart from that, fluids and tyres, everything else on the car was fitted at the factory so the car is as original as it’s possible to be unless there is a car out there in a plastic bubble? Cavan is convinced this is the oldest UK registered 944 in the country and I am inclined to agree but if you know different we would love to hear from you! Many thanks to Cavan for the photos and the information for this article.

The membership for the region is sitting at 90. We would like to welcome new members George McGregor (944), Gordon Taylor (Boxster) and Alastair Ratcliffe (944S2)

February saw us back at Bo’Ness for our normal meeting with 29 members attending and nine Porsches in the car park. We went through a load of things that are coming up. One of the things we had to try and establish was who was going to our TIPEC national show at Gaydon this year, as our club had decided to move the date and it now collides with the Thirlestane show that we also go to every year. Turns out we will be about 50% down on attendance at Gaydon and about the same at Thirlestane. We also had a few more names added to the list for our CCLASP Fun Day on the 8th August in aid of terminally ill children. We still need more cars! We then had our second winter meeting on the 21st February, this time at Blair Athol. We had 29 adults and four children attending this outing and meeting. We have to give a special thanks to Martin & Lorna Foyle from Wick and Wildie & Cath Brown from Ayrshire who travelled about the same round trip of nearly 400 miles to attend. Well done! The good thing was that it was fabulous weather, wall to wall blue sky all day. We finished off the day with a shopping trip to Bruar Falls. We are now looking to our third and last Winter Meeting at Brunston Castle Golf Club Near Dailly on the 21st March.

We set about putting together the diary of events for this season, working with some new suggestions from members and the SVVF year book (thanks Pete Weston for lending us a copy). We worked on it well after all the group had gone, Neil then took it away with him and set it out, and we have now circulated a copy to everyone. It’s another busy year ahead, lets hope we see good turnouts for all the events as we did last year.

15–16th May (Saturday–Sunday) The spring weekend run and show will be a trip down to Corbridge, Northumberland to the Fastlane supercar show which will be on the Sunday. 4th–6th June (Friday–Sunday) Our annual weekend trip to the national show at Gaydon, which is on the 6th. Anyone not already on the list and wishing to come to the national show, please contact Neil ASAP. Three rooms left! (a double, a twin and a single.)

Meetings are held first Wednesday of every month 8pm for an 8:30pm start in the 007 bar at Bo’Ness Motor Museum, Bridgeness Road, Bo’Ness EH51 9JR. www.motor-museum.bo-ness.org.uk The January and February meetings were bitter cold nights, but despite the ice and the snow we had a great turn out braving the elements to attend. January was a get together with not much to discuss, February however was our busy meeting with voting for the RO & ARO positions. We had circulated voting forms and suggestions forms in the months leading up to February for ideas and voting for 2010. The response was excellent, with a show of hands on the night along with the voting forms returned. It was business as usual, Alan Neil and myself were all unanimously voted back in again to carry the TIPEC Scottish Region flag for 2010.

27th June (Sunday) Knockhill Classic Speedfair Our club section at this event is now full (20 cars allowed and all spaces now taken) If you wish to go to the Moffat Classic Car Show on the same day as Knockhill then please contact Neil ASAP and he will arrange for you to go to that show instead.

Meetings are held fourth Tuesday of each month 7pm at The Bunbury Arms, Ixworth Road, Great Barton, Suffolk IP31 2NX. www.nextnorth.com/bunbury/findus.htm Since our last update as a region we have had two monthly meetings, both very well attended despite the weather we have been subjected to. Not many cars are out of mothballs yet but the nights are starting to draw out, so hopefully not too much longer to get back to some good old tyre kicking. We have also had the pleasure of attracting a couple of new members to our ranks. Forthcoming events we have committed to the diary for 2010 are: 7th May (Friday) Weekend away to Cley on the Norfolk Coast 16th May (Sunday) North Weald Activity Day 25th July (Sunday) Helmingham Hall Classic & Sports Car Show This was a very successful show for our region last year. Anyone interested please contact Colin or myself for further information. 5th September (Sunday) Norfolk Show As a region we are pleased to have the opportunity to go to another county in our region. If anybody knows of a show in Cambridgeshire or North Essex that would be a good day out and feel it would be beneficial for the Anglia region then please let us know. We are planning to go to North Norfolk for a weekend away touring the Norfolk coastline in May 2010. If anyone is interested in joining us, please call Yvonne King for further details on 01638 508 815. The weekend will consist of two nights away, staying in a lovely hotel in Cley (near Holt) from Friday, 7th May.

Meetings are held second Monday of every month 7:30pm onwards at The Red Lion, Lady Lane, Earlswood, B94 6AQ. Our first real event for 2010 was a visit to Classic Preservation and I won’t go into any detail here as the event is subject to an article elsewhere in this issue of All Torque. February’s Club Night was thrown into confusion by the closure of the Red Lion for refurbishment. Unfortunately the venue didn’t let us know about the planned closure and we were forced to make our way just up the lane to the Reservoir for a beer and the quiz. I would mention a big thank you at this point to Derek Cashmore who waited around on the Red Lion car park on a bitterly cold night to advise any late arrivals where we had gone and only joined us after I rang him to suggest he had waited long enough; thanks Pal. The quiz seemed to go down well amongst those that found their way to the Reservoir and the first prize of Meguiars goodies went to Lindsay Brown for the highest score on the night. Runner up was Adrian Langford who received a copy of the Club Calendar for his efforts. Looking ahead to this summer’s events I have posted out an email suggesting early booking for the three Transtar events we are attending as well as for Prescott on 9th May to avoid missing out. If you haven’t already booked you should do so now! Steve Jones and Adrian Langford have been plotting a dedicated 928 event and I am delighted to advise that a date has been fixed for this addition to the schedule of events. Sunday 30th May is the agreed date for the 928 garage day and the event will run from approx 10am till 4pm. Included on the day will be: • Demo of Flexplate Check, pressure release and Crank Play/Movement Measurement • Demo of Bosch Hammer tuner • Demo to show how 3rd level brakelight fitting was completed on SCJ’s 928 • LED Upgrade Demo • Demo replacement of Bonnet struts • Removal of door panels

This event will be held at Steve’s home in Uttoxeter, Staffs and so the full address will only be provided to attendees nearer the event. The event will be strictly limited to 10 cars because of space and priority will be given to 928 owners for obvious reasons. If you want to come along please contact me at the earliest to book a place. I am delighted to announce that our WotY for 2010 is now finalised and we are heading back to the Lake District. Details for the weekend are as follows: 1st October (Friday) Drive up to the lakes at your leisure and check in to our chosen hotel, The Abbey House Hotel near Barrow in Furness. Meet for drinks from 7pm and dinner at 8pm 2nd October (Saturday) We have two tour routes planned to take in some of the best scenery depending on which suits you best. Tour one: Following the A592 alongside Lake Windermere to Bowness where you can stop for a couple of hours to poke around the shops and maybe grab some lunch. There are boat trips on the lake and other local attractions depending on your interests. When you’re ready to move on the suggested route will take you to Ambleside where you will pick up the A593 and follow this back alongside Coniston Water and Grizedale forest back towards our base in Barrow. This route will total around 65 miles (about 1.5 hours driving). Tour two: Follow the A590/A592 alongside Winderemere. Unlike route one you continue on the A592 up Kirkstone Pass, picking up the A5091 and then A66, A591 to Keswick. There are shops and plenty of pubs here for a spot of lunch but the main attraction is the Car’s the Star Museum. www. carsofthestars.com/cots.html The return route uses the more direct A591/A592 roads that will take you back to the hotel via Windermere. This route totals around 96 miles (about 2.75 hours driving). Alternatively you might want to just chill out at the hotel or visit a particular tourist attraction by yourselves such as the Beatrix Potter house, the lakeside aquarium, Haverthwaite railway or Ulverston, birthplace of Stan Laurel, amongst the many on offer. Evening drinks from 7pm and dinner at 8pm.

Depart the motor museum and head for home or enjoy the afternoon in the lakes, as you like.

Bristol RO Paul Harrison 07884 116 971 (mobile) paul@harrison167.freeserve.co.uk Meetings are held first Tuesday of every month 8pm at The Fox, Easter Compton, B35 5RA, one mile West of M5 J17 (Cribbs Causeway). The days are getting longer and the evenings lighter, even the weather is starting to improve (famous last words!!), which means that it’s time to get the pride and joy out of the garage and bring it along to the monthly meetings or weekend events to show off … We have a few dates in the calendar already but there's plenty of time left to fill. If you fancy doing something particular, let me know or come along on a Tuesday night to discuss it with everyone. Now that we can actually see what’s going on in the car park, we can kick some tyres while we’re doing it! The year to date has seen healthy attendance at The Fox on the first Tuesday of the month, which has been very encouraging, so it’s just down to me now to organise some interesting events! Having said all that, I can always do with some help so if you have a few moments to spare, I would be grateful … 18th April is the date for the TIPEC AGM which I will be attending so if you fancy coming along to find out how the club is managed, let me know. Into May and on the 9th, we visit Prescott Hill for the Classic Hillclimb. This is a great repeat event which, although the paddock is already full, still has some places for static entries in the Orchard. Come along, bring the family for a picnic, and see some great machinery while you're there.

famous circuit for this event and it has yet to disappoint! There's still time to book. Other themes that I reckon might be popular are a Sunday drive with pub lunch, a visit to an outdoor karting circuit, or a trip to a local festival of transport. If you have any ideas, let me know! Either way, come along on a Tuesday to discuss them and I look forward to seeing you there. Happy motoring!

South Central Joint ROs Clive & Jo Gosling 01604 863 666 clive.gosling@tipec.net Meetings are held fourth Monday of every month at The Green Man, Brackley Hatch, on the A43 (Eastbound) near Towcester. Well, like all I guess, we are looking forward to the spring weather and some sunshine. Personally I would settle for something dry! Things are gearing up for a busy spring and summer of events, some organised by South Central region and others just tagging along and letting others do all the hard work. First up will be our club night on March 22nd. This will now take place at Formula Fast Karting in Banbury. By the time you read this the event will of course be over and the winner will no doubt claiming Schumacher like genius and the losers foul play and a rubbish kart. At the time of writing Paul Smith is my favourite to lift the trophy, lets see if I am right in the next edition.

In June, we have the TIPEC National day on the 6th, with party and BBQ the night before. All the details are on the club website and if it's as good as last year, it’s worth putting on the calendar.

First main event in Spring is the Cotswold drive on the 24th April, starting with a visit to C&N Customs near Banbury before a hoon out to the wolds followed by lunch (a pub type thing, not gourmet).

Later that month, I'm hoping to attend an airfield trackday at Hullavington on the 25th.

If interested please register details on the forum thread under Gruppe Central.

July sees us visit the Le Mans Classic on the 9th: we catch the overnight ferry on Thursday night and come back on Monday afternoon. This will be our third visit to the

I can always reduce the numbers should the rain interfere with your plans, but can’t increase them if you decide to come along at the last minute.

Going forward we then have Prescott Hill climb on the 9th May, a Porschehsop open day in conjunction with Central region on the 22nd May, then of course the big National day on the 6th June. Then we move in to Supercar Sunday, Goodwood and Silverstone, all great events. One date to bear in mind for the future is Sunday 18th July. We have space for 25 cars at the Kimbolton classic, not far from Wellingborough. This is a large event with hundreds of cars (900 last year) and numerous car clubs attending. It’s new to us and I think it will become a regular event. I will be posting details as soon as our space is confirmed and it will be on a first come first served basis. I am sure as we get in to the season longer reports will follow, but for now keep your eyes peeled for email communications from Gosling towers and info of all events we organise will be posted on the forum.

East Midlands RO Graham Waller graham.waller@polypipe.com ARO Alan Fuller susancarolfuller@googlemail.com Meetings are held third Tuesday of every month 7pm for food (meeting proper begins 8:00pm) at The Field Head Hotel, Markfield Lane, Markfield, Leicestershire LE67 9PS. At our latest meeting in February, we welcomed our new members. Andy & John were in attendance for the first time, and Steve & Linda came with a view to joining. Not a lot has been happening during the winter months, but this year proves to be as exciting as last, and probably more challenging with the number of events we are planning. It goes without saying, that these events, meetings, shows, drives out and track events cannot possibly take place without the hard work of the people organising them. Your RO doesn’t do all the work; that would be impossible! We are supporting six Transtar shows this year (Weston Park, Catton Hall, Ragley Hall, Trentham Gardens, Beaumanor Hall and Arbury Hall), and those who have previously been should have received an entry form in the post. My advice is to book all the events we are supporting that

All Torque 81 page 31

you can attend as soon as possible, as some of them fill rapidly and it is better to spend the £3 entry fee than decide nearer the event and end up paying the full entry fee of £16-ish as I have in the past. Entry forms can be downloaded at www.transtarpromotions.co.uk. We are organising three track events for 2010 (given enough interest). Central region will again be visiting Curborough on Wednesday 14th April which is very reasonably priced and we are invited to join them (this event is now full), then the RWYB (Run What Ya Brung) at Santa Pod raceway, Northampton on Saturday 17th April, then later in the year (Friday 10th September), a race day at Abingdon Aerodrome (runway-based with plenty of run-offs). If anyone is interested then please let me know. These are in addition to the Prescott Hill Climb in May. Paul Bird (Central Region) is organising a trip to Le Mans proper on the weekend of 12–13th June, again through Travel Destinations. This is the first time TIPEC as a club has made an appearance. If you want to be one of the ones that says “I was the first”, then please contact Paul or your RO. You can book direct with Travel Destinations, but please advise us of your attendance. Le Mans website: www.lemansrace.com Not in the calendar yet, but hopefully to be included this year is a trip to the greyhound racing at Colwick, and (very hopefully) a trip to MIRA. Gruppe South Cornwall & Devon RO Steve Switzer 01208 816 397 07867 556 869 (mobile) steve_switzer@me.com Meetings are held third Sunday of every month 12:00–2:30pm at The Winds of Change, South Petherwin, Near Launceston, Cornwall, PL15 7LP. Please contact Steve in advance so that he can advise the pub of probable attendee numbers.

Great chat and a good meet with much tyre kicking afterwards, including Laurance and I going round the block in his ’44 to reassure him that his car really was as good as I thought it sounded and was. So where were you folks? I know it’s early in the year and the weather isn’t great but it would have been nice to see the other Regional members. Pauline and I are trying to organise bits and bobs for the remainder of the year and if you’re not with us we don’t know how you feel about the suggestions, nor what your own suggestions might in turn be.

February meet looked like being a quiet one, a worrying return to the distant past as a few years ago it wasn’t unknown for Pauline and I to be the only members present—one of the difficulties of a wide geographical spread and a small member base.

It’s not too easy to organise something different to do over the summer if we don’t have some discussions about it. Not every one enjoys hillclimbs or trackdays or visits to motor museums, but it would be nice to be able to organise some things together.

However it quickly went from two to four then to six of us. Looking better. Shortly after we got to our meeting place a Boxster and another 944 rolled up to make two S2s two 944s and the Boxster.

Or even if you can’t always come to the meetings, drop me a line or an email with your ideas which can then be discussed.

It was good to welcome back Peter and Sandra after a long gap, nice to see Myles and Sally of course. Good as well that Laurance was able to come up in the 944 for the first time since getting it back on the road. Best of all was to be able to welcome our two new members Roger & Sarah in their S2.

One date which is now up will be, as in past years: 18th July (Sunday) Wheels Vintage Rally Wadebridge 2010 Wadebridge Royal Cornwall Showground Put it your diary, an excellent event, not to be missed and raising money by Rotary for a worthy cause.

South East RO Derek Flanagan 01342 717 754 07767 254 820 (mobile) derek.flanagan@btconnect.com Meetings are held second Wednesday of every month 8pm at The Bolney Stage, London Road, Bolney RH17 5RL, just off the A23, 10 miles south of Crawley. For those who haven’t made it along to a monthly meet yet, we always welcome new members and prospective members. Come and see if you like us, we’re a friendly bunch no matter what model of Porker you own or desire and you will be guaranteed to receive a hearty welcome. You also have the opportunity of winning our own regional lotto with all SE Region members going into the hat each month, but you have to be at the meeting to win. Our events calendar continues to expand and our Regional monthly meetings are becoming a real buzz of activity with details of our numerous regional and national events, general Porsche news and members’ stories as well as holding the monthly lotto. See our regional section on the website for the 2010 calendar of events and links to the applicable event websites. Sadly we had to cancel our January club night for the first time in our history due to those white fluffy crystals that continued to descend from the sky. We also had a snow storm a couple of hours before our February meeting that resulted in reduced numbers, but there were still 20 of us in attendance and a nice cosy warm log fire in The Bolney Stage to greet us. With better weather for the March Club night attendance crept up to 25+ and we welcomed new member Phil Smith (with his friend Janet) who owns a Gold 1976 930 which was a four year project. ‘Bumper’ Brown also brought along Porsche Centre Mid Sussex’s new demo Boxster Spyder for us to drool over .

Cornwall & Devon Region cars at the monthly meet

We held our annual Porsche Quiz which had a number of topical questions on the new Porsche model releases and the 2010 F1 Grand Prix season. This was a closely fought

contest with David Green taking first prize with 28 points, narrowly beating Lawrence Peacock on 27 points and Michael Bowden 3rd on 26 points. 23rd January (Saturday) Supplier Visit to Paragon GB Ltd Independent Porsche specialists in Five Ashes, East Sussex. A group of members enjoyed a visit to these Porsche specialists and had an insight into Paragon’s history and Sales department within their showroom and afterwards they gave us a talk on the Service side of their business in the workshop, including the valeting and preparation facilities. Paragon also have an off-site bodyshop and although we did not see that, we were given an overview of the facilities. 28th March (Sunday) Go Karting In addition to teams from both the SE Region and SELNK region we also have a team from the Sussex Ferrari Club to add a little extra spice to the occasion, where the ‘Krazy Gang’ (Flanagan family) will be trying to retain their trophy. By the time you read this issue of All Torque this event will be history and we will publish a full report in the next issue. 4 April (Sunday) Goodwood Breakfast Club Meeting Sporting Family Favourites: four seater fun 14th April (Wednesday) Club Night 15th April (Thursday) Trackday Passenger Rides With 2009 Porsche Club Champion Ben Demetriou of Faze1 Motorsport in his race

This event is ideal for those members who do not want to use their own car on the track and have never experienced a trackday. 14–16th May (Friday–Sunday) SE Region WotY We have 13 bookings to date but are still taking bookings for our 2010 WotY staying in the Snowdonia National Park area in North Wales, subject to availability of rooms. The venue is The Royal Oak hotel in the stunning Victorian village of Betws–y– Coed overlooking the river Llugwy. It is a three star former coaching inn with 27 en-suite rooms at affordable prices and an excellent restaurant, awarded Les Routiers hotel of the year 2008. The hotel are offering a special group tariff on a three night dinner, bed & breakfast deal: Standard room (six doubles) £60.00 pppn Superior room (six doubles) £75.00 pppn Deluxe room (six doubles) £90.00 pppn Single room (three singles) £82.50 pppn Single occupation of a Standard double room £97.50 (provided not too high a proportion of total rooms). Those staying the third night will be charged the B&B price only (ie. free dinner) for the third night. This is a reduction of £25 off the above DBB tariffs. These prices include £25.00 allowance against the a la carte dinner for each night. 2nd–4th July (Friday–Sunday) Goodwood Festival of Speed I am delighted to report that the South East Region will be having a stand at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed on Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th July when the theme this year is ‘Viva Veloce!—The Passion for Speed’.

Just as Audi used last year's FoS to mark their centenary, this year's featured marque Alfa Romeo will mark its own centenary with lavish displays, but the theme will also be interpreted more broadly into a celebration of Italian cars and motorsport past and present. The press release promises ‘unbridled Latin zeal’ and a wide array of iconic Italian machinery, though the exact list of automotive appearances is yet to be confirmed. As you'd expect with the FoS, some other important birthdays will be acknowledged. The 60th anniversaries of the F1 World Championship and the Carrera Panamericana road race, and the 50th anniversary of the RAC Rally will all be celebrated with appropriate mini-exhibitions and no doubt Porsche cars of all eras will be there in force.

February This month started off with slight panic as we found out that the Crownpoint Inn had not only closed for refurbishment but had also changed hands! Not only that but the refurb wasn’t due to be completed until 10th Feb, in other words after our club night! Oops. Someone recommended the Bullfinch in Riverhead, Sevenoaks. Despite the last minute change to this venue we had a great turnout of 20 people. Unfortunately, although the venue internally was great and the staff were very obliging, the car park is just too small so it was a non-starter. I’m told the fish and chips were great as well. March Back to the Crownpoint, this has changed considerably since its refurbishment and is now a very large carvery. We took over a corner of the lounge and the 12 of us had a great evening. I had a discussion with the manager and he is happy for us to stay. So for the foreseeable future we’ll be staying at the Crownpoint. 18th April (Sunday) AGM at Gaydon starts at 10:30, if you want a lift then shout as I’ll have room. 25th April (Sunday) Karmann Ghia Owners Club and Marden Motor Club on ‘Drive it Day’ Being organised and coordinated by Clive & Janet Richardson. The joys of older cars: Pete Blackler’s 944 Cabriolet

Wessex RO Pete Blackler 07779 203 278 (mobile) peter@blackler7827.fsnet.co.uk Meetings are held fourth Tuesday of every month 8pm at The Wheatsheaf Inn, Braishfield Road, Braishfield, Romsey, Hampshire, SO51 0QE. Club nights continue to be well attended, but not many Porsche’s venturing out, hopefully that will change in the next few months. Please have a look at the events list and let me know the ones you would like to attend. I have just MOTed and Taxed the 911 Turbo. I did not get to do the restoration over the winter that I wanted, so it will have to go on for this year with just a tidy up. I am having the wheels polished by the wheel specialist that we went to last year for an evening, they have already done my Jag wheels and made and excellent job. I will let everyone know how the polishing went with some before and after pics. The 944 Cabriolet is also on the road and I suspect Carol will be driving that to the events, unless it lets us down again. I still have to sort out the discharging battery, I will probably write an article on that one, but for the moment I have to keep using the battery quick disconnect I have fitted every time I leave the car with the engine off. Oh the joys of older cars! (I love it really.) Let’s hope the weather is kind to us this year and we manage to have a lot of fun with our cars. Finally, the sun has made an appearance, my car is back on the road and running well, and I’ve posted up a packed programme of Porsche things to do in 2010. Please go along to the forum and take a look, and I will add things from time to time.

One to be added is a charitable ball in Oxford in aid of cancer charities. A good friend of mine has mobilised her considerable organisational talents to arrange this event in memory of her friend who lost her battle with the disease this year. By the time you receive this edition of All Torque, I should have placed more details on the forum so please take a look, but I will probably already have hassled you for support by then anyway! Please respond kindly and it’ll be great to have your support. I’d like to commit to filling at least one table on the night, and it should be a pleasant way to raise much needed funding to help in fighting this terrible disease, that touches nearly all of us in one way or another. We kicked off the 2010 activity calendar with a run down to the Goodwood Breakfast Club on 7th March. Glorious sunshine accompanied us all day, but it was bitterly cold wandering around the paddocks and track looking at all the amazing pre-’73 cars that had turned up. The were some great noises too; a chap with an orange 911 RSR was most accommodating in demonstrating the ground shaking flat six howl from his apparently unrestricted exhaust. Lovely! The drive down was absolutely superb too, taking a route I had not used in entirety before, but stringing lots of great roads together with little other traffic. Mind you, it damn well ought to be quiet at 6:45am on a Sunday. It was a little busier on the way home, and there was Plod absolutely everywhere. At one point I crested a twisty hill to find a pursuit car waiting malevolently in a lay-by and it pulled out behind me. I couldn’t tell you if I had been speeding, I was having way too much fun.

A nail biting moment arose when the blue lights came on but thankfully he tore off up a side turning … So after that, it was a more gentle pace for the rest of the journey. Goodwood Breakfast Club takes place nearly every month from now and I’ve put a few of the events on the calendar, so please do come along to one or more. Thanks to Darren Vallace for joining the run this time, which we enjoyed with some other chaps from PCGB Thames Valley. Can I please urge all Thames Valley members to ensure I have your up to date email details, or you won't receive any updates or nudges to attend the next monthly meeting. Speaking of which, if you’ve never been before, or it’s been a while since you've been along, it’s all about informality, good company, nice food, a little drink and a good chat. We don’t do committee meetings if that’s something that might put you off, and time is usually called before we are ready to go home. From April, the evenings will be brighter so we might even get to be outside and look at some cars again. It’ll be interesting to see who’s bought/sold/restored/polished/tuned/ crashed what in recent months. Come along, all welcome! 9th May (Sunday) Prescott Hillclimb Open Classic Event Our space allocation for the hill climb is now full, but there are still spectator places available for £18 per car if you want to watch the rest of us thrashing our way up the course. See www.cleevevale.org.uk/ classiccar/CarEventEntryFormHill.htm for your application form. Fill it in and return it urgently with your payment as places are VERY limited.

On the 2nd March, after re-arranging the furniture, we settled into our new venue which is The Angel near Ferndown. This is the place to trade banter with fellow club members on a day-to-day basis, ask questions and share knowledge, up and down the UK (and worldwide!) Here’s a recent example. Forum: Porsche models; 911 Aircooled Topic: Tyres for a 911 Carrera 3.2 1989 hedley: Hi there, last October I bought my first Porsche, something I've dreamed of since I was 13. I managed to get myself a black 1989 (when I was 13!) Carerra 3.2 Sport, which is absolutely wonderful; the best car in the world in my eyes. I have been looking at replacement tyres (mine has 4x Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3) on it: Rear (225/50 ZR16 92Y); Front (205/55 ZR16 91W). I would be very interested to know 16:49 if thesePage the right tyre Gmund qs 30/6/08 1 for the car. I am comfortable with the sizes and happy these are correct for my

16" Fuch wheels, but I have struggled to find out what the recommended manufacturer/model should be. Many of the tyres around today are obviously more technologically advanced than my 21 year old car, so the handbook may not be the best place to look in any case. Does anybody have any recommendations?

Porsches of our vintage left the factory on Bridgestone RE71, no longer available.

tr7v8: Porsche’s Nx grading didn’t start until 1990 and so has virtually no relevance on the older cars anyway as Porsche won’t have tested them on say a 944 or a early 911.

hedley: The existing Goodyear F1s do feel good, so I may still go with them again, as I guess the devil you know and all that. However I will definitely consider these others.

Sean Smallman: I have Bridgestone S02 N rated tyres on my 911 3.2 Speedster.

sam: Whatever happened to John Bull Remoulds? Always a fine tyre!

hotblack944: This might help [link to Porsche’s recommended tyres document] tr7v8: I smell a rodent. All of those tyre manufacturers are tied to Porsche as suppliers on current models.
