Chairman’s Chat We had a really positive AGM at the Coventry Transport Museum. It was humbling to see so many people willing to give up their Sunday to discuss the future of the Club. There was a short meeting after lunch with the Regional Organisers, which could have gone on all afternoon if we had the time. I suggest that we have a get together later in the year for ROs to discuss how the Club supports the regions and how we improve communication.

The trackday at Blyton was great fun. We thoroughly enjoyed unleashing all of those Stuttgart horses around a challenging but very safe circuit. The respect shown by all the drivers was as you would expect, there was not one infringement of either track or etiquette rules. The only disappointment was that we had not sold all of the spaces. I have spoken with a number of people since the event who wanted to book but were unsure what to expect and now wished they had. We would very much like this to be an annual event but if we can not fill all the spaces the financial risk to the Club is too great. We will look at maybe doubling up with another one make club, but it would be so much better if we could fill a venue with our Porsches. The Anniversary Weekend is just a few months away, you need to book for the Cotswold Tour and the Saturday Night Party. Family and friends are welcome to join us for a fun evening, please let us know if you would like to reserve a table. The hotels we are using are on the booking form inserted with this issue. The cheapest way to reserve rooms is with Booking.com and we will arrange minibuses from the listed hotels. For those that have already booked, tickets will be sent out Mid-August. The 911 is getting all the attention at the major shows across the country and the world. As a one off we are going to have three parking areas at the show: front engined (924,944,968,928), 911 and Boxster/Cayman. Jon Mitchell will be hosting a 944 maintenance seminar with a Q & A after the demonstration. A number of members have posted on the forum about the money they have saved by switching to Asset Trust, our new insurance partner. The insurance market is very competitive, it is worth time comparing the level of cover and the policy excesses. You will save money by realistically valuing your car at renewal time. Inflating the value will increase the premium and you will receive current market value in the event of a claim. Agreed values offer some protection, but again you pay for that level of cover which is not guaranteed if you have over valued your car. Enjoy the Summer.

20 years of TIPEC

The Porsche Show 2013

September 8th (Sunday) at the Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon We hope to make our 20th anniversary annual event the biggest and best so far. For the third year running the show will be free to enter, with access to the museum toilets and café. (With a reduced entry fee of £8 for the museum.) We will be hosting the annual TIPEC show and shine competition – a friendly event competing on pride of ownership, with a Visitor’s Choice award alongside the official judging. The Porsche-only parking areas will, for the first time, be split between 911 variants, transaxle Porsches and Boxster/Cayman/other, to help us create a 911 display and celebrate its 50th anniversary year. For £10, with tickets available on the day, you can take your Porsche for a run on the Jaguar/Land Rover test track.

Show and Shine entries On the day at the Heritage Motor Centre, our annual Show and Shine competition is sponsored by Meguiar’s.

There will be the usual array of traders, autojumble stalls and presentations from technical experts –and the chance to win a Porsche for the weekend.

Ours is not a traditional concours contest – in the friendly TIPEC spirit, we appreciate cars that are driven daily as much as we appreciate carefully stored garage queens. What the judges are looking for are Porsches that are evidently loved and cared for – cars that really are your ‘pride and joy’.

For the family, we will have a bouncy castle and ball pool – and Hollywood Heroes will be providing Star Wars characters to appear throughout the day.

Every Club member is invited to take part, you just need to register your interest so that we can allocate Show and Shine parking. Please send an email to cluboffice@tipec.net with contact details and the make/model of your Porsche.

We hope to raise money on the day for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

The overall winner of Best in Show will be invited to display on the Meguiar’s stand at the 2013 Classic Car Show at Birmingham NEC.

Derek Flanagan reports on a funpacked day This was our 15th Inter-Regional karting tournament held on Sunday 14th April at The Campbell Circuit, Filching Manor in Jevington, East Sussex. After a long, cold, white and wet winter it was unbelievable that we had another dry, sunny day for the racing and the hottest day of the year – the first time we’ve seen the yellow bun this year, especially after a downpour the day before.

2013 interregional karting

The racing was even more competitive this year with 11 teams on the track – two more than last year, so it was quite busy and eventful. The pit lane marshal seemed over strict with time penalties for pit lane speeding this year and there seemed to be a lot more yellow flag incidents than prior years, but this added to the spectacle. Congratulations to the two South East London/North Kent region teams – David Moore’s “AWWW YEAHHH” team and Nick Beaumont’s “Pond Motors” team who came first and second respectively with yours truly – Flanagan’s “Crazy Gang” – relinquishing their title taking the third place on the podium. David Moore’s last won the title two years ago (2011). Daryl Flanagan gained pole position on the grid after the 15 minute qualification session but David Moore’s team who were in P2, managed to get to the first hairpin in the lead and kept it for the entire race. The main battle was for 2nd, 3rd and 4th places, with the Crazy Gang taking 2nd place with only five minutes remaining due to a crash by Pond Motors, but the Crazy Gang were then pushed into a tyre wall and went back to third. The leaders were also black flagged and suffered a 30 second penalty in the last few laps but had a large enough lead (five laps) to stay in the lead and take the chequered flag with a three lap margin.

Meet your Committee The TIPEC committee members work in their spare time to make sure everybody gets the best out of the club. Unless you happen to have a committee member in your local region though, you’re unlikely to ever know who they are. We thought some introductions were in order.

Internal Communications Director

Vice-chairman

Membership Secretary

Hi I’m Sue Simmons and at the recent AGM in Coventry I accepted the opportunity to become the new Internal Communications Director, taking over from Derek Flanagan who has done the job for an amazing 16 years – Well Done Derek and thanks for all your hard work. My husband and I run the Bristol region of TIPEC and we have been members for around eight years in total since buying our first lovely black 944 S2 as an impulse buy, and loving the marque ever since. As you can see we now have a 944 convertible. My professional background is that I have been in management for the last 23 years running large national teams and I now run my own business as a freelance consultant, but keeping up with the latest technology for communicating with large groups is quite a task. I am really looking forward to this role so please remember it’s voluntary and a ‘hobby’! Please feel free to contact me with any good ideas you have in regard to internal communications and please get involved – if you can’t get to meetings you can at least join the Facebook group – just search for The Independent Porsche Enthusiasts Club on that site. Hope to meet lots of you at various events.

I am a 56 Year old car nut, and I have been playing with all things mechanical since I was about eight. I came late to Porsche ownership buying a 944 in 2005 after a succession of classics, including a couple of kits & then a TR7 V8. In 2005 I found a 2.5 ’87 944. I have always done most of my own spannering and the 944 was the same, I bought the various special tools required and got stuck in. Around the same time I joined TIPEC, in those days the Membership Secretary was Trig Ellis. When I joined Trig told me that there used to be a South London Group and asked if I was interested in restarting it. We called the group South East London & North Kent (SELNK). I was surprised when I got the list of around 16 people to find that two members actually lived barely a 10 minute walk away. Our first meeting in December 2005 was held a local pub and had a turnout of around eight people. Since then we’ve increased membership of the group to 54 members, moved venue four times, and we now get turnouts of 20 or so. The 944 went last year to be replaced by a Boxster last year. We’ve been all over the country and off to France for various events and made some friends who’ll be friends way beyond Porsche ownership.

2012 was a big year for me. The first big event was becoming a grandfather at 40 years old. This would have been the highlight of a normal year, but with my first driving holiday round Europe, stopping off at Monaco for the F1 race, my year was only going to get better. Once home from the trip, which had been 18 months in the planning, I realised that I had spare time on my hands. I’m an active member of the Scottish region, but being unable to attend weekend events, Sean’s forum post asking for help with the membership role caught my eye. I got all the equipment couriered to my home and set about building it all back up again. It does take some time every week to keep up the database and post out the renewal cards and new membership packs, but I find it very rewarding to give something back to the club, after it has helped me find new friends, technical advice (having owned a 924, 944, 928 and now a 996 Turbo) and most of all saved me money. My 911 has been a dream car, and after owning a 928 which had been my poster car when I was younger, I was worried that I was buying something that was not my style. I never got hung up on the front, mid, rear engine thing, but the 928 had a certain charisma in my mind. All that was blown away after a few test drives, the cars can’t be compared they’re so totally different.

Member’s cars When a brand new, type 991, Porsche 911 Carrera S appeared at the August 2012 TIPEC NW club night it was seen as something of a coup for the region. When the owner, Tony, turned out to be both engaging and enthusiastic about his car and our club we knew there was a story to tell. All Torque sent its Northern Correspondent to find out more.

I asked Tony to tell me how the whole 911 ‘thing’ came about. Here’s what he told me: “I was approaching retirement and saw that as a bit of a life-changing event, having worked all my adult life. Although I have plenty of hobbies and pastimes to keep me sane and to keep me from under Joyce (my wife)’s feet, I knew that it wouldn’t suit me to retire gracefully. There was a desire to indulge myself, to be a little self-centered and to fulfill a longstanding ambition. I’d passed my driving test some 40 years ago had always had a longing for a 911. With concerns about what the neighbours, my wife and my three children would think ringing in my ears I went shopping …” I asked Tony if it was as simple as marching into a Porsche Centre and saying “I want that one!” He said: “Not quite. I went to a Jaguar dealership first and test drove a diesel XF . A fine car with comfort, refinement, economy and a relatively low price tag. It would have been a sensible choice, but I wasn’t in the mood for sensible. I wanted something to stir my soul, you know, get some adrenalin flowing.

The bemused salesman tempted me with an XKR convertible. It was much more like it – a bit of power to excite. On the test drive the salesman encouraged me to ‘go for it’ on a road he knew to be free of speed cameras. I didn’t want to disappoint so tested the, err, loud pedal. The car slewed sideways on a badly surfaced corner and I found myself wondering if such a car should be so easily disturbed. My brief XKR love affair was over”. So where did you go next? “Straight to BMW. I arrived looking a bit scruffy in my jeans and I don’t think I was taken seriously. Apparently, sourcing a 540D, a 640D and an M5 to test drive would have been ‘difficult’. They took my contact details and I’m still waiting for their call!” C’mon Tony, what happened when you went to the proper shop? “Ha ha, the Porsche Centre you mean? I met with Iain Joshua at Porsche Centre Chester and the writing was on the wall, so to speak. My only concern was whether I’d actually like a 911, having never

driven one. However, my first test drive at Chester was in a 987 Cayman with a PDK gearbox. It was a fine car and nothing I did would upset its poise on the road, but I did find the ride to be very firm. I knew I wouldn’t be able to live with it. Once we were back at the Centre, Iain asked me if I wanted to take his 911 demonstrator out on my own. With my pulse racing, my lifelong ambition was about to come true. I must be a Porsche salesman’s easiest customer. I don’t need to tell you the rest” Well, actually you do, please carry on: “I ordered my car on the 11th of March last year and picked it up during May. The car is Basalt Black with platinum grey 20" wheels. There’s a black rev-counter and a PDK gear-box with paddle change on the Sport Design steering wheel. The interior is black and platinum grey leather and I’ve got the heated and ventilated, leather backed, adaptive sports seats, I chose to have a Porsche logo on the storage bin lid, auto dimming mirrors, PCM with sat-nav and phone module and the Bose speaker upgrade. The car also has a rear wiper, front and rear parking sensors, cruise control, tyre pressure monitoring, a fire extinguisher and home-link, but don’t get me started on that because it refuses to communicate with my garage door at home and we (me and the Porsche Centre) still haven’t found a solution to the problem.” Judging by that list I reckon the car is fairly highly specced! Now that Tony has owned and driven his 911 for nearly a year, I wanted to know whether the ‘911 thing’ was working out for him: “Oh, I love the car. Obviously it’s my first Porsche so I have no reference points to the earlier cars – I hope to get a drive in an air-cooled 911 soon. The 991 does ‘look’ like a 911 should, albeit with a bit of middle age spread, but just when I think the car is just a ‘sensible sports car’ it reveals its schizophrenic personality – I need only to press a button or two on the centre console and all hell is let loose; the exhaust snarls, the PDK ’box drops a cog or two, the chassis firms ups and the accelerator becomes

a hair trigger. There’s plenty of power for me and it’s great fun when I’m off the motorway and enjoying an, err, enthusiastic drive along the coast or over the ’Dales.”

Just when I think it’s a ‘sensible sports car’ it reveals its schizophrenic personality – I need only to press a button or two on the centre console and all hell is let loose.

I was glad to hear that Tony hasn’t been disappointed with his first Porsche – mind you, that’s hardly surprising when that first Porsche is a brand new 991. However, he went on to tell me that there had been something missing a year ago: “I knew I needed something more – a car club would have been nice. A bit of Internet research found me two Porsche clubs and after looking at the TIPEC web-site it was a ‘nobrainer’ for me. There was an abundance of activities arranged which caught my eye and the manner of listing those activities and reporting upon them suggested a convivial atmosphere. The TIPEC North West members have embraced me and I’ve made many new friends. The club deserves to flourish.” I asked Tony to sum up his 911 experience so far: “A new dimension has been added to my life. Life is too short to keep putting things off, like I did for so long with the 911. I’m enjoying my new adventure and keep wondering where it’ll lead me. And when the time comes that I have to give it all up … the kids can split the 911 three ways between them!”

Wheels, wheels, wheels Derek Flanagan and the South East region paid a visit to alloy wheel refurb specialists, Wheel Works of Crawley. On Sunday 17th March alloy wheel refurbishment specialist Wheel Works in Crawley very kindly hosted another open morning for a group of 18 South East Region members. The workshop must have had 200– 300 wheels of all styles and sizes for refurbishment from all car marques and models with many different Porsche wheels in numerous conditions for us to compare and discuss. Proprietor Roger Evans and his son Paul have been running this operation for the past 10 years in Crawley which is growing and gaining a reputation for excellent quality and service at fantastic prices. Two Years ago they expanded their business to include the supply of tyres. It was fascinating to see how much work goes into refurbishing the wheels, and how they manage to rescue what appear to be irretrievably scruffy wheels. Since our last visit in December 2007 Roger has invested heavily, leasing the two adjacent units to treble his floor space for expansion and development of an automatic conveyor system and is now refurbishing 50 wheels a day. In addition to chemical stripping Roger has a bespoke stainless steel shot blasting machine from Rosler in Germany and is the only bespoke four-wheel blasting machine in the world stripping four wheels at a time. Wheel Works also have the very best tyre fitting equipment and can fit 22 inch tyres, whereas many tyre fitters can only handle 20 inch. There are four stages to wheel refurbishments which were demonstrated to us by Roger and his team.

Preparation This starts with removal of the tyre followed by stripping. Any repairs are then performed, it is rarely necessary to perform any welding unless absolutely necessary. We learnt one of the tricks of the trade, which is the use of Quiksteel – a putty compound on a stick which cures like steel and can then be sanded and ground to provide the repair. Apparently the AA and RAC have this magic stick in their toolbox for instant repair of radiators (far better than plastic padding). The wheels are then checked for roundness and if necessary made true. The second stage in the preparation is the removal of the old coating by chemical dipping and/or shot blasting to provide the mechanical etching finish for adhesion of the base coat. The stainless steel shot will strip some aluminium wheels in only 20 seconds, especially those off Japanese cars and even the toughest wheels only take 1.5 minutes compared with 8+ hours in the acid baths (unless you have Mercedes AMG wheels which seem to have an impregnable coating that will only respond to acids). This blasting process dramatically speeds up the overall wheel refurbishment process and provides a perfect key for the powder coating, as well as being totally green as the stainless steel shot is filtered to enable it to be continuously re-used.

Powder spraying Powder spraying is the third stage. This is spraying of the base material, it’s usually grey, but white and black are also regularly used. The first step is to heat the wheel upto 200–210 degrees Celcius for half an hour. The wheel is then removed from the oven and powder sprayed – an electrostatic process which ensures a uniform coating of 250 microns all over. This is superior to the manufacturers finish which is typically only 180 microns. For those wheels with a black silver finish the wheels are coated with black powder instead of grey. The silver coating which is translucent then allows the black to give its black chrome appearance. For this process only four micron silver coats are applied to enable the black to show through. The shade of black is darkened by each silver coating with up to four coats for the darkest finish. Top coat The fourth stage is the top coat which is usually one of 60 different silver colour powder coating finishes although there are numerous alternatives such as white, black, anthracite, black chrome and gold as well as bespoke colours available. Firstly the wheel is then placed back in the oven for green (partial) curing for 10 minutes and allowed to drop to 45 degrees Celcius in readiness for spraying of the top coat, which is usually silver in colour. The final protective coating is a clear lacquer which cross links with the silver to provide a protective and durable coating. This is then finally cured in the oven for 15 minutes. The silver coating is typically 25 microns thick. Most wheel manufacturers only lacquer the visible front faces of the wheels but Roger will lacquer the wheels all over if you wish, to provide maximum corrosion protection. Final tips from Roger are that we should look after our wheels exactly the same as our bodywork and wash them followed by waxing them with the car body wax to provide protection as they take more exposure to the elements than any other part of the car. He advised us never to use the acid based wheel cleaners available from car accessory shops and also used extensively by the mobile car cleaners in supermarket car parks, as these rapidly attack the protective lacquer coating. James Garrard took advantage of today’s visit and left his set of RUF wheels to be refurbished at the special price of only £45 per wheel, whilst other members have also obtained quotes for refurbishment of their wheels.

944 Owners Michael Bowden (centre) and James Garrard (right) with new member David Henderson (left) and his very smart 944 Turbo

Roger advises us to select our wheel styles with care, as different style wheels are more durable than others. The desirable split rims look very cool when new but they will deteriorate and corrode quicker than single part wheels as the joints will hold water and brake dust and refurbishment of split rim wheels is a lot more expensive than one piece wheels. When selecting your wheels, be aware that those with smooth radiused corners and edges like most Porsche wheels also have more durable coatings than wheel designs with sharper edges. Machine and Polished wheel finishes are very fashionable at present, but have a tendency to be less durable as the clear lacquer is usually the only protection against corrosion. For optimum protection machined or polished wheels should also be anodized but this is not common practice. Alternatively Wheel Works can replace the polishing with a chrome powder coat finish to withstand the severe British weather. Wheel Works is the only full factory wheel refurbishment centre in Sussex. Members can deliver their wheels or leave their car at Wheel Works. Wheel Works will also collect and deliver wheels. Beware that mobile wheel refurbishers only perform a cosmetic repair to the face of the wheel. Special thanks to Roger Evans for his hospitality and opening their facility especially on a Sunday for TIPEC members.

TIPEC members from various regions made the trip to the circuit for the club’s anniversary track day. Signing on was from 7:30 with the drivers briefing at 8:30 being an introduction to the circuit layout, event rules and the expected level of behaviour for the day. It was all done professionally and with good humour. All drivers then went onto the track for ‘sighting’ laps. Sighting laps are used to familiarise drivers with the layout of the circuit and the best line to take, whilst following an instructor at a gentle pace. The day was run on an ‘open pit lane’ format which meant drivers could go on and off the circuit whenever they wished. Free track time started at around 9:30am with a break for lunch, with track time finishing at 5:00pm, so with the potential of over six hours on track there was more than enough time for all. I’m by no means an expert, but having completed a handful of track days previously I decided upon my usual format of around 20 minutes on track followed by a similar amount of time in the paddock before venturing back out. This format works well as 20 minutes of high speed circuit driving is physically and mentally demanding on the driver so the break is welcomed and it also gives an opportunity for a few safety related checks to be made on the vehicle whilst allowing it to cool down. Lunchtime gave drivers and passengers an opportunity to exchange stories from the morning session before venturing back out in the afternoon. For the afternoon the latter part of the circuit layout was altered and it became particularly twisty. It required a new focus and kept the day fresh. The track was only closed, briefly, three times – two minor mechanicals (a blown turbo hose and a loose gear selector linkage on a 944 Turbo, both quickly fixed) and a minor spin from a 993 which caused no damage to the car and only minor damage to the driver’s pride! TrackAction Online instructors were also on hand offering track driving instruction which I think was useful to those who used them. Jon Mitchell (www.jmgarage.com) was on hand with spanners and diagnostics to help out where needed – but I’m glad to report that he wasn’t very busy, testament to the engineering quality of the Porsche brand and the care taken by our members to maintain their cars. A good variety of models attended including 924, 944, 987, 993, 996, 997 and 991 (plus a rogue, but welcome, McLaren MP4-12C). Extreme Sports Photography (www. extreme-sports-photography.co.uk) captured some great images, some of which are shown here. Thanks to all the staff at Blyton Park for providing a safe, organised, fun experience. Thanks also to the Club for arranging the day in the first place and thanks to all those who turned up on the day to drive, spectate and have passenger rides. TIPEC members really do know how to enjoy their Porsches!

Well organised, enjoyed the day and the gathering the night before. The photography service was top notch – got some great pictures. A good bunch of enthusiasts.

I’m proud to have been the only female driver on the day, and it was a good chance to really see what the 997 can do.

Thanks for making the day so enjoyable – in true TIPEC style we all got on and had a great time. No injuries, no damage, spirited driving and no road-warriors.

Great day, the sun had his hat on and I met some great, likeminded people.

A cracking day and a great bunch of guys and girls. This is what owning a Porsche is all about.

Great day. Thanks to all the drivers who took me and the Mrs out for passenger laps.

All my expectations were exceeded. The chance to learn fundamental aspects of track driving from professionals. I got what I paid for and was able to indulge my passion – our passion – and take my driving up a level.

Blyton got me hooked after my free tuition. I managed to get a really good ‘flow’ to my laps and the track was really friendly with loads of run-off. Brilliant value for money and great to have the circuit owner on site all day, chatting to us all.

Excellent to see so many cars turn up. Top day out, enjoyed that, and everyone was really well behaved on track.

Great to see all the cars. Nice to see so many novices on track – hope to see you all on the track again soon.

Oh what fun – really pleased I decided to track the 991. The only damage was to my wallet … 5mpg whilst on track!

Great to see all the cars. Nice to see so many novices on track – hope to see you all on the track again soon.

Fantastic day thrashing my GT3. Well organised, great circuit, other Club members were so friendly and the car was awesome, and to top it off, half an hour of professional instruction from a racing driver for free!

What’s stopping you

Lee Reader decided to undertake his dream road trip in 2012. Everybody should have a go.

European road trip, what’s stopping you? I’ve always loved the idea of taking my Porsche over to Europe, round the Alps and back again. After years of thinking about, and a bit of prompting from some friends, I finally decide I should fulfil an ambition and go for it. After agreeing a route with my travelling companions, I set about booking my accommodation and researching where and how we would get round the route. Obviously it is a lot easier to book it through an agent, but having been assured that one of us had organised exercises for NATO all over Europe, we decided on this occasion to organise the trip ourselves. This has many issues, booking the accommodation was probably the biggest and I would probably book with an agent the next time I go. Thinking about what had originally been barriers that stopped me going, I began to look at the facts and not my self-made obstacles.

Firstly the car. I took out European insurance and breakdown cover, and got the car inspected, serviced and prepared ready for the trip. A few spare litres of coolant and oil for the journey and I was set. I looked into the ferry. I finally found that the car parking is safe and secure, with little or no danger of damage to the car so I booked my ticket. Next up was me. Driving on the right I’d done before in France and America, but it had been a long time. Thousands of people manage it every year, so what’s the big deal? I bought my tax for Austria and Switzerland from the web and stuck them on the windscreen ready. A few apps downloaded to my phone let me plan fuel stops, check out restaurants and plan activities helped. I checked my spare tyre and repair kit, packed my high-viz vest and spare bulb kit. Local customs, language and any other laws I might have missed were all researched, discounted as reasons not to go and I reminded myself of the very reason I wanted to go … so I hit the road.

Writing & photography by Lee Reader All Torque 99 page 19

The excitement of going on holiday, visiting attractions, new countries and seeing the sights is amplified by the fact that you’re in your own car. Finally, I’m driving my own car on the open road in Europe. At one point I’d done three countries in one day while trying to get as many roads done between Innsbruck and Turin as I could. Enjoying the Porsche museum, roads and fresh air of the Alps was one of the best holidays of my life. The final trip home, getting on and off the Chunnel was easier than I remembered and was a great was to get home. Knowing I had taken the car round Europe, driven the passes I’d wanted to, visited the Porsche Museum and factory and seen all the sights I had have given me a great sense of achievement. I’m planning on going again at the first opportunity. If you are thinking for one minute that you might enjoy this, if you enjoy your car and you like holidays then this is for you.

A warning for 944 owners Mick Simmons wants to talk to you about your door opening mechanism. It’s a common point of failure and worth paying a bit of attention to. Not exactly a warning of impending doom – more an inconvenience, unless both sides fail at the same time which is highly unlikely. Jim Hearnden, our TIPEC vice-chairman, wrote an article in All Torque 94 about the door locking on his 944 having failed due to the failure of an operating rod. Mine suffered a similar failure a few weeks ago, on the day it was being dropped at our local OPC for belts and water pump replacement. I couldn’t open the passenger door from inside or out. The mechanic at the OPC got it open by removing the LED cover and using long nosed pliers to lift the inner rod buried inside the door. Having stripped the door panel I found the same problem that Jim had found, the operating rod is plastic with a ball socket at one end. The tension is kept on the fitting by a plastic clip. Over time the plastic has hardened and gone brittle and the clip has broken off allowing the socket to drop off the ball – end result no door mechanism.

Clip just visible through the partially obscured hole above

Jim’s article explains the whole process so no need for me to repeat it here. I made one change in that I didn’t release the solenoid to do the job, I managed to work in the confined space – I obviously have longer fingers than Mr Hearnden! To engage the plastic clip there is a conveniently placed hole (see photo – partially obstructed hole) that a screwdriver can be placed through and working by mainly feel can be used to put pressure on the clip. The other end of the rod connects to the servo by a clevis pin which is again very restricted in space to get to; a pair of angled forceps proved to be the most useful tool to align the pin. I did both sides, as it turns out it was just as well as the driver’s side clip failed on removal. The part required is 944.537.511.00, the same part for both sides. The total cost from the friendly Bristol OPC was £3.05, after TIPEC discount of course. Part of my reason for the warning is that mine is a ‘relatively’ young 944, being Oct 1990, with 64K on the clock – if this one has failed then there may be a few more cars with a similar problem looming. For £3 and couple of hours work to do both sides it is probably worth some preventative maintenance! Make sure you lubricate the door lock and electric window mechanisms while you are in there and it shouldn’t need to come apart again for some time to come.

Well the spring/summer has sort of arrived up here in bonnie Scotland after a long cold winter it has to be said. The season has kicked of having just completed the first show of the season in East Kilbride, at the Museum of Rural Life. The Spring weekend has been superbly put together by James Mclauchlan and looks an action packed weekend with huge and interesting content. James will no doubt have the weekend summarised and submit a wee article for the next All Torque regarding that. This weekend is now full with the hotel bulging at the seams with Porsche enthusiasts! As you will see from the list we have managed to finalise the diary of events for the coming season for the region. There is a bit of the old and a bit of the new for the season and again it was communal suggestions from you, the members, that decided the way ahead. You will notice an extra show on the 7th of July at Bridge Of Allan in Stirling. I have updated the diary of events with this latest addition on the TIPEC.net website and emailed everyone on the group list. The region, as always, is committed and looking forward to the national show at Gaydon this year and with 20 bodies and 10 cars confirmed already it looks to be a real strong turnout for the 20th Anniversary celebrations for the club. With the Saturday and Sunday events this year it looks to be fantastic and I look forward to the weekend in good company. The TIPEC.net website under Gruppe North has a list of the diary of events etc and minutes of the monthly meetings are also posted there to keep you informed as to what is happening with the region. If any member for the region out there is wishing a personal email regarding the region’s activities etc and is not on the group email list already then please email me and I will add you to the list to keep you updated. Also for this season we have introduced a text message reminder service—simply a text every now and then to remind us all of up and coming events etc with the region. Approx 20 have signed up to

this service and it is another way of keeping you members up to date to what is happening within the region. Alan, James and myself look forward to seeing all of you at some point during the season and as always the region is very active and we hope something for everyone during the course of the summer. We have on the 1st of September Scotland’s largest show of Porsches on display at Calderglen Country Park in East Kilbride and we really could do with you and your Porsche there for that day. Last year was a great success with over 50 cars and it has to be said very wet weather to which I am sure put many of coming. We are anticipating 75 cars plus this year. This show of cars is a rare joint effort between PCGB and ourselves and is a real treat for anyone wishing to come along for a real great family day out and seeing all the cars on display. When this falls on a Bank Holiday, we meet on the second Monday instead. Since the last report our region has really got up to speed with things going on. We’ve had detailing evenings, new meeting venues, chippy teas, trackdays and loads of Porsches descending on a pretty Victorian seaside resort. As mentioned in the last issue of All Torque. we had to postpone the detailing evening due our host’s work commitments, from February to late March. Well in true British spring weather seven hardy souls braved the threatening snow shower to head over to Finer Details in Chadderton. Hot tea & coffee was the order of the day when we arrived, and our host Iain Brown did a sterling job of brewing up and making us welcome (He’ll make someone a good wife!) Iain had lined up a lovely Mercedes SL that already looked in great condition. We were soon to discover that what can look like a great finish on a car, can be transformed into something amazing with the right products, equipment and most importantly with these jobs, skill from the operative. I don’t think it can be stressed enough with detailing, that experience really does stand out when contemplating these jobs. Especially when using machines.

Iain has been detailing cars for over 15 years, at least eight of those professionally. We were taken through various stages of compound selection, machine pressure and speed etc. All of which can produce surprisingly different results. We even had the chance to have a go ourselves. I think all those who went learned something new and had a good night. Iain even got a couple of bookings from our members, so everyone was a winner. It was just a bit of a shame that the weather was a bit rubbish and maybe put a few off. I’m sure we’ll line up another at some point. Early April found us having our club meeting at the new venue, The Boatyard. When we broke the news at the March club night everyone seemed to agree that a move was necessary. Calls of “we need a bigger room” before club business got underway made the announcement all the more easier. However we were still nervous as to how many would come and would they like it. Well, if the first night was anything to go by we needn’t have worried. We had a very good showing of 30 people and 17 Porsches in the car park. I would like to extend a warm welcome to Norman Harris with his 944, and Doug Ogden with his lovely 997 Turbo who joined up straight after coming to the meeting. Also we had Mark and Dee Chamberlain who have recently acquired a 997 C2S and Kev who owns Classic Car Workshop in Coppull came along to see what we were about. We marked the new move with a group photo. There were a couple of camera-shy ladies who shall remain nameless! From what I could gather from the evening we have made the right decision to move. The room was just the right size I think without being too big. If you haven’t been down yet this year then have a think about it. It would be great to see you. We seem to have a really good banter going on and very much a social evening. To those who have been coming down regularly, again we can’t thank you enough for making the effort. Let’s keep it up! Many thanks to Terry and Dave from the Boatyard for making us very welcome. I also spoke with them afterwards and

they were happy for us to hold some events in the room, so if there’s anything you have a thought on let either Richard, Simon or me know. We have a couple of things in mind as well which we let you know about in due course. As well as other regions we had a quite turnout of North Westerners for the Blyton Park Track Day. Many a discussion was had in the meetings running up to this day and I know everyone involved was looking forward to taking part. Here’s Richard’s first hand report on the day’s proceedings: Nine of our members attended the club’s trackday at Blyton Park on 20th April and there should be a full report elsewhere in this edition of All Torque but here’s the regional detail: Most of us met up the night before in Scunthorpe for tea and tall tales. Once we got to Blyton Diane found that she was the only female driver on track all day and relished the opportunity to give passenger laps in her shared 997 Carrera S. Tony went along to spectate (again, there should be a full feature elsewhere in the magazine about his 991) but temptation got the better of him and he signed-up on the day and thoroughly enjoyed being on track. Dan took his GT3 on track, as did Simon with his Boxster S, Ciro with his Cayman S and Peter with his 993 Carrera. Another good event for the NW region! Thanks Richard. Our last event before went to print was the teaming up with the North Wales region of PCGB for ‘Porsches On The Prom’ in Llandudno for the last weekend of April. A few members had mentioned this event last year but we were a little late to do anything about it. So it was decided that we would like to see if we could join PCGB this year and make it a bit of a run out. I contacted the organiser Brendon Daly who replied “the more the merrier!” to our request to partake. For those unfamiliar with that neck of the woods, Llandudno is a lovely Victorian seaside town so the thought of the promenade full of Porsches sounded quite appealing.

Oooh, it’s smooth! Finer Details evening

TIPEC North West group photo at our new home

Some of us decided to make a bit of weekend of it and have a relaxed day of it on the Saturday before heading off to our respective hotels/guest houses for a bit of sprucing up of the Porkers (well just me, maybe I need to get out more!) The rest of the gang headed down on the Sunday morning. Making a total of 13 people and nine cars. Prompt and organised as ever, our group were fairly early to arrive and get parked on the Prom. There were maybe only 10–15 cars before us so it was difficult to gauge how successful early on. It didn’t help that the weather was looking slightly threatening. As the next hour came along more and more cars arrived, parking ‘Le Mans’ style with their backs to the sea. You could sense the growing anticipation that this was going to be quite a big turnout. People spent time catching up with friends and looking at each other’s cars before heading off into town for a bit of coffee and retail. The sight that greeted us an hour or so later was truly something to behold. Porsches were lining the prom as far as the eye could see. Many of us proceeded to walk the prom and do a count up. There was everything from old 924s and 356s to lots of modern stuff. We were treated to a 993 Ninemeister Speedster special and even a genuine 2.7 RS. I didn’t get chance to see Brendon before we left but before the event but he told me that last year they had 93 cars and were hoping to crack 100. We counted over 210 Porsches. I’m sure Brendon must

have been blown away. Thanks for having us. The day was finished off with a run over to the fabled EVO Triangle.

June 1st–2nd (Saturday–Sunday) Tatton Park Show. We would like to build up the numbers on this one. Please lend your support

A steady and slightly congested drive over there was rewarded with a pretty empty triangle. However new member Doug in his 997 Turbo had got split up from us and failed to see us parked up at the start of the route. He promptly blasted past about three cars with us frantically waving in his mirrors. As Richard pointed out in the regional pages his triangle became more of a straight line! We managed to catch up with him at Chester services and try to decipher how we lost him. Maybe we’ll take a run back there later in the year ‘just for Doug!’ Thanks to all involved for coming.

June 3rd (Monday) Club night at The Boatyard

That’s about it for now. Please not the change of the Annual Concours in the events below. Also as we go to print, two of our members, Colin and Tony have acquired a bit of a track ready 924 to tinker about with. We’ll bring you all up to speed soon on their project. That just leaves us with the return of our ‘Car of the Month’ slot. This time the Honour goes to Ciro ‘Lead Right Foot’ Vivone and his Cayman S. Ciro is always out on events, is very active in our meetings and is very much a driving kind of member. He joined us last August having acquired his car a little while earlier. If he doesn’t start at the front of our convoys he always finishes up there. It’s always a pleasure to have him along and hope we live up to his expectations as a region. I hope we see him year after year.

We also had a game of Killer for a Bottle of Wine and a Porsche Calendar—won by none other than our ARO Mick. OPC Clinic 13th April On Saturday April 13th again thanks to the partnership with the Bristol Porsche Service team, 17 of our members were able to have their cars up on the ramps and checked over very thoroughly by a Porsche technician. The comments from our members were extremely positive. Most common comment was the exercise ‘was really useful for planning future jobs’. The day gave us the opportunity to put a range of cars through the workshop and I had an email saying the technicians found it very interesting to work on some of the older classics.

Everyone is benefitting from this partnership so if any of my members want to know more about this please get in touch with me. Castle Coombe 29th April Our normal routine for a Castle Coombe day is a hearty breakfast at The Compass at Tormarton and this Action Day was no exception. We all had free tickets courtesy of the team at Castle Coombe and spent the day viewing an enormous range of enthusiasts’ cars. An additional angle to the day was joining up with the local PCGB cars for a side-by-side display that was impressive to say the least and we all made some new friends. Hope we can pair up for more events. Porsche night at the Ace Café

Visit to Orchard View Classics

Informal meetings are held twice monthly: First Sunday of every month from 10:30am at The Goat Inn, Vicarage Causeway, Hertford Heath, Herts SG13 7RT and last Monday of the month from 18:00pm at Ace Café London, Ace Corner, North Circular Road, Stonebridge, London NW10 7UD. Now that the sun has come out we have been busy. The last weekend in April encompassed a Saturday morning visit to Orchard View Classics at Yalding near Maidstone, for bacon rolls, coffee and cars. Then a 6am start on Sunday to join Derek and the Southern Region to display on Brighton seafront for the Ace Cafe annual InCarNation event. Finally our Monday evening at the Ace Cafe for Porsche Night, the warm weather brought out many enthusiasts and around 60 of their immaculate cars from far and wide, even our Chairman popped in en route home from the Midlands! At the AGM in Coventry it was agreed that Anglia region and our own would embrace car owners in Essex, with our two regions being renamed: ‘Anglia & North Essex’ and ‘North London, Herts & South Essex’. As Essex was previously unmentioned it is hoped that we can welcome new members that perhaps felt excluded. Time will tell! There are a number of TIPEC 20th anniversary events this year which are detailed on the website and in All Torque. Below are some forthcoming regional events that we hope may tempt R11 members to stretch the legs of their cars now that we have shaken off what seemed a never ending winter! June 8th (Saturday) Letchworth Classic/Vintage car show at Halls Green June 9th (Sunday) Bromley Pageant A huge show at which we have committed to support a pitch of up to 15 NL,H&SE cars for a display area adjacent to our friends in South East London, North Kent region. This is a great one day event of static displays, arena shows and trade market, that we would like to get as many R11 members to as possible. Reserve places with Vince. We still have spaces to fill so contact us if you’d like to join in. July 28th (Sunday) We hope to repeat our very successful drive out and display at the Spitfires, Merlins and Motors event at Imperial War Museum Duxford on 28th July. Last year we met for breakfast then cruised to Duxford in convoy for a great day out. A return to the ‘Toy Box’, Roger Dudrich’s personal car collection near Potters Bar, is a possibility. Our visit in 2012 was a fascinating few hours looking at a fine array of luxury, sporting and classic cars, assembled by Roger over a lifetime as a car and motor bike enthusiast. Once a date is proposed we will let you know.

North London, HErts & South Essex members’ cars on Brighton Seafront for InCarNation

The above diary list is in addition to our normal monthly meets and we hope R11 members will be able to join in in as many events as possible. We will be planning events for later in the year and will keep you informed as opportunities arise, but we are open to suggestions from members for any events you feel would be of interest. We are keen to hear from you what you would like from us as your regional reps. To this end, we will be calling all members over the next few weeks to get your feedback and ideas.

South Central RO Pete Garrett 07804 030 695 (mobile) garrett-peter@sky.com Meetings are held from 9:45 am on the first Sunday of every month and from 19:30 on the fourth Monday of the month at The Red Lion, Evenley, Nr Brackley, Northants NN13 5SH First of all I would like to confirm that our evening venue has changed to The Red Lion at Evenley, this is due to a couple of factors, one its more central for the members that attend the evening meetings and secondly the pub owners have doubled the size of the car park and built a new beer garden. Set in a sleepy village next to the cricket green this is a perfect location for the Porsches to rattle the windows on the Grade two listed cottages.

April Our first trip out this year was to Center Gravity near Hinckley, on behalf of the SC group I would like to thank Mark Saving for organising this event. On the day we had a good turnout and the weather was spot on, the talk started at 10:30 and finished around 4pm, although it was a long day standing it was very well put together, not too techy but just enough to understand what each adjustment does and to leave it to the professionals. Towards the end of the day a couple of members put their cars on the ‘damper tester’ this device puts one axle at a time through a 30 second cycle which then show a performance graph on the PC, all those who took part came away happy. May 26th (Sunday) By the time you read this we will have enjoyed the first car show of the year for the SC group at Newton Longville (Milton Keynes) on May 26th. There is another Transtar event which we will be attending at Ragley Hall on May 26th, lets hope the weather is better for us on this date. The following day (27th May) we will be travelling down to The Ace Café for their dedicated Porsche night, we have attended this before and there was a varied selection of cars on display, one for the bucket list methinks. We will meet at Warwick Services (Southbound) at 14:00 for a 14:30 convoy down to The Ace Café. June 16th (Fathers Day) is the date for the Transtar event at Trentham Gardens, this is a lovely location, and is usually well attended. I have to apologise as I put the wrong date for the Cars in the Park event in Lichfield, it should be over the weekend 6–7th July, (info to show your car below), this is a joint display with PCGB.

We had our first light night meet at The Bulls Head on April 8th and 17 Porsches turned up, it looked great, many thanks to you all. I mentioned last time that we would have our first Transtar event of the year done and dusted by now, but unfortunately the poor weather put paid to that, the event being rescheduled to June 23rd with tickets being honoured for this date.

Club night will be moved to the 3rd Monday of the month in July (Monday 15th July), for one month only as we will be having a Pride of Ownership night, with all cars to be entered and a £5 entry fee to include a buffet, there will be four prizes and it’s definitely not a concours! Hopefully we will see you at one or more of these events, if not pop along to club night, it’s the second Monday of every month at The Bulls Head, Shenstone, it would be nice to see you there.

We have also had the AGM at The Museum of Transport in Coventry on April 7th—even with a huge turnout we fairly rattled through the agenda.

Meetings are held third Tuesday of every month Cars in the Park, Lichfield. This event has been 7pm for food (meeting proper begins 8:00pm) at running since 1997 with more than 50 car clubs The Field Head Hotel, Markfield Lane, Markfield, JON MITCHELL_q 29/08/2012 14:11 Page 1 attending over the weekend. We can also tour East Kent’s picturesque villages in this area known as ‘The Garden of England’. A full report will be published in the next issue. April 28th (Sunday) Brighton InCarNation We had 13 Porsches from four regions at the Ace Cafe’s third annual InCarNation event at Brighton on Madeira Drive. We had Porsches from SE Region, SELNK Region, Central Region and North London/ Herts/South Essex (NLHSE). This was our first visit to this seafront car show and fortunately the sun came out , but we also had to endure the loud music from many hot exotic street cars with bigger audio systems than their engines , producing over 1,000 decibels competing against the Ace Cafe stage equipment playing continuous rap, garage, house and R&B music. This In addition to cars from the SE & SELNK Regions, we also had Matthew Oulton from Central travel down

from Birmingham in his Guards red 944 which is in excellent condition. We had Vince Dallimore’s 928S4 and Peter Musk’s Boxster S from North London/Herts & South Essex Region. convoy set off for Compton. We had very decent weather for a change, and an enjoyable drive to the airfield, although somewhat marred by the terrible road conditions on Zig-Zag Hill which was wet with washed out gravel etc on the surface, we decided not to give the cars their customary thrash up, or down the hill as the road condition was so poor it was considered imprudent, plus most of the attendees had experienced this drive previously under more favourable conditions. We all enjoyed a really good breakfast in pleasant surroundings .This is certainly one of our favourite early season events which I am sure we will replicate next year.

The March club night was held on the 5th as usual at The Angel, and despite our fears of a smaller than usual turnout we were surprised by the attendance of twelve members and guests. We discussed the confirmation of our BBQ arrangements and the booking of the site at Anderwood, plus some of the charging and catering plans. We went on to look at other events we may wish to include in our programme, including race meetings, the Porsche challenge series, and the MG car club series, both of which we attended last year, and found them to be well run and fun events. Jason then showed us photos of his mid ’60s 911, which he has been restoring for the past 19 years! It’s a spectacular car, in which he hopes he will be able to attend our next meeting! (or at least the one after) April’s club night was very well supported with twenty plus members and guests, we welcomed new member Hilary with her pretty 996 as well as several members who we had not seen so far this year, and some who brought out their cars for their first outing of the season, we discussed the upcoming breakfast drive out to Compton airfield, and the events already planned and others still under consideration. Some members went out to the car park to see some of the new machinery, and indeed to admire the sparkling old!

South East London & North Kent RO Jim Hearnden 01634 869 658 07930 353 232 (mobile) tr7v8@phaetonconsulting.co.uk ARO Paul Greer 07799 412 870 (mobile) prgreer@blueyonder.co.uk Meetings are held first Friday of every month 7:30pm at The Harrow, Maidstone Road, Hadlow TN11 0HP. Tel 01732 850 386 (Google: http://g.co/maps/x7hck) As many will know the Harrow was closed when we turned up for the April meeting! Having spoken to Shepherd Neame it appears that the landlord & landlady did a runner sometime during that week without giving notice. As Murphy’s law would have it was one of the biggest club turn outs for quite a while! We luckily managed to get into the Wateringbury for the evening and I did ask if we could use it as a club base which was OK. However it is not ideal, the car park will be packed come the summer. Shepherd Neame intend reopening the Harrow pub ASAP and having discussed it with Paul we have decided we will probably return to the Harrow for the June meeting. For the May meeting however we were invited to OPC Tonbridge for the evening. They opened up the whole place having some stunning cars there and their local detailing specialist. They served soft drinks and had lots of sandwiches available for us. The great venue obviously bought people out for the evening with a fantastic turnout of 24 members and some stunning cars. We are not sure whether the Harrow will be open for the June meeting so please keep an eye on your email and the region’s web page as we may need to move venues with short notice. We have very kindly been offered OPC Tonbridge again if that’s the case.

We now have 52 people on the SELNK list and a lot of these Paul & I have never met. It would be great to see some of you in the forthcoming few months. I have two or three members that I don’t have email addresses for. If you have an email address and do not see mails from me, then please send me a mail to tr7v8@phaetonconsulting.co.uk and I’ll add you to the list. That also applies to people in adjacent areas who would like a copy of our calendar. Please also ensure that you update address, car and email details when you renew.

May club meeting at OPC Tonbridge

April club meeting As above we all arrived to find the Harrow in darkness, no one there, the hanging baskets all disappeared and the place locked up! As we stood there debating which venue to move to a lot more people arrived. Eventually we piled into our cars and went off to the Wateringbury which much to my surprise managed to accommodate 20-odd people. Some people wanted to eat, others didn’t but it all seemed to work itself out. See above for venue news.

Drive It Day is promoted by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs, to increase public awareness of historic vehicles.

April 21st: Drive It Day Thanks to Clive Richardson for the report and pics. A sunny Sunday morning saw a group of 26 cars meet at the Classic Car dealership of Godin Banks for coffee, doughnuts and a chat. We were able to drool over the collection of classic cars and bikes they have for sale. There was so much to see, but we needed to leave for a scenic drive of about 30 miles through the Kentish lanes, with idyllic views on route. Maidstone Museum staff were waiting to welcome us and park the cars around Brenchley Gardens, the Victorian park behind the museum in the centre of Maidstone. The Museum Café had laid on a wonderful buffet lunch for us, after which Simon Lace, Museums Manager, gave us a fascinating ‘behind the scenes’ tour. Our next drive took us for a relaxing stop at Iden Croft Herb Garden where many cups of tea and homemade cakes were consumed, in a very peaceful setting. The day was finished with a pleasant meal at The Stile Bridge Inn, which even had some live music to entertain us. The day was enjoyed by all.

Forum: Porsche Models; 924, 944, 968; Hew owner needing info Pete82: First post for me and needing help, sorry guys. I picked up a cheap 944 2.5 lux auto and had it delivered at the weekend. Car’s in average condition but for what I paid I don't mind. I knew from the onset that the autobox had issues. Basically it will drive fine in reverse, when cold it will creep forward in drive. Looking underneath the back of it when running there is fluid in the reservoir and the amount changes if its running or not. The top cable does move when the box is put in the different modes on the shifter, I’ve no idea what the bottom cable does as that doesn’t seem to move full stop and worryingly is cable tied on as the clip doesn’t seem to be doing much. On tickover there are some bad noises that go when the engine is revved. I picked up another box tonight with the views of changing it, does anyone know how hard this is or if there is any good guides? El Gordo: Hello and welcome to our forum. I have no bloody idea about the answer to the technical questions but I am positive that someone will be along who can offer some help. Nice to have another new owner here! tr7v8: OK, first hi and welcome. It is a long time since I was involved with autos, but if the car goes in reverse that rules out the torque converter. When you say it moves Gmund qs 30/6/08 16:49 Page 1 forward slowly, is this with lots of revs? If it is then it points to a slipping brake band

or a knackered first gear clutch. The very first thing is to dump all the fluid, swap the filter and refill it. Replacing the filter after dropping the pan. It takes standard Dexron which is cheap. The level should be between the marks when the case is hand hot, the car needs to be level. This is engine running in N. Check the cables and linkage. If the fluid is burnt, brown and/or fells coarse then the box is knackered. Completely dead boxes are rare. El Gordo: Thanks for this reply, thats very informative. Yeah when the car is cold it will drive forward at maybe 1–2mph. When the car was delivered on the trailer the guy was able to reverse it off the trailer but it was not able to drive over to my lockup (100 yards) I had to reverse it over to the lockup (reverse works fine and it engages fine and straight away when put into gear) but it wasn’t able to drive forward once warm at all. When cold it will move with reasonable revs but when it starts getting warm even loads of revs don’t do much. I know a bit about cars but have not had autos myself, only manuals, so didn’t know anything about a slipping brake band. The first gear clutch – is that part inside the box I take it? Is there a guide/ pics on filter locations for the box? and any recommendations on where to source one from? I'm waiting on a Haynes manual to have a read of and I won a spare auto box earlier today on Fleabay for £50. The fluid did look a bit burnt/brown when I checked the level. I will have another look and see what its like plus make 100% sure that the

noise/rattle I hear at idle is from that and not the exhaust rattling somewhere as when the revs are taken up the noise goes away. At worst, how hard is it to swap a box on these? Thanks for the responses/help so far, hopefully I can sort this and then see what porsche ownership is like. tr7v8: Go to Rick Cannell’s website and download the manual, this covers the box in detail. The Haynes manual is best used as a door stop. www.2010.cannell.co.uk Google autoboxes and how they work to understand the brake bands. It sounds to me like it may just be low on fluid, sometimes this gives weird symptoms. Pete82: Thanks for the link, I’ll have a look. I had the same sort of issue with a forklift today, level got low and we couldn’t move it till we topped it up then it would move fine. jmgarage: Good advice from Jim there. My first advice would be to service the transmission by draining the fluid, dropping the sump, changing the filter inside the transmission (easy with the sump off), refit the sump with a new gasket and refill it with fluid … Many a seemingly shot auto or Tiptronic transmission has been resurrected by a good service. If it is saved by this, keep the spare transmission, it is worth having. If you need to change the transmission, it is reasonably straight forward, just make sure you remove the transmission with the torque converter still attached to it.
