Wishing you a great start to 2013 and trouble free motoring. To enjoy this bumper packed year we could do with some decent weather and not a repeat of the last two summers. My new wall planner is already full of events that will be keeping me away from my many chores. We are not the only ones celebrating an anniversary this year. Our 20 years is a great achievement, however when compared to the 911 which has been around for 50 years we have a way to go. Unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1963, it appeared originally as a concept with a 901 designation, changed to 911 for the following years show. They had to lose the zero because Peugeot use zeroes in their model names. There will be a nine hundred and eleven 911 model parade lap at Silverstone Classic for those attending and we have been asked to take part. Our anniversary activities are organised, we have over twenty Porsches going to Laon and we have a couple of places left for the European Tour in September. There are spaces available for the Trackday in April, spectators are also welcome if we want to come down and watch the action. There are also spaces available to join us at Le Mans. There is a booking form with this issue for our anniversary weekend in September. The Cotswolds has some beautiful stone built villages and rolling countryside to drive through. Starting at the Museum cafe with a bacon/sausage bap and finishing there after your drive with a scrumptious cream tea. Saturday evening we have a BBQ, with Krisis playing until late so that we can dance the night away. We can reserve tables for Regions or family groups, just let us know your requirements. Sunday we have our annual show, we need you and your Porsche to join us in the main parking area display. We have booked the Jaguar high speed test track for the day, for those that would like to unleash all of those Stuttgart horses under the bonnet. The show is once again free to enter and is being organised by Jim Hearnden assisted by Paul Greer. The AGM takes place in April and we have a couple of vacancies on the Committee. Derek has asked to step down as Communications Director when a replacement can be found. He would to see more of the world with Pauline and spend time with their grandchildren. Although Derek (member number 76!) has not gone yet, he has earned a very big thank you for all the hard work he has put in since the club started back in 1993. He fits the cliché perfectly, if you want something doing—ask a busy man. We also need an Advertising Director to manage advertising/sponsorship and member benefits. The Club needs a full Committee to be able to operate effectively and not to overstretch those in post. Please contact us if you are interested in helping out in either of these roles. We will focus more on the history of the Club over the coming issues. If you have any stories about past events or old photos from shows etc please send them in for our scrapbook. There have been changes at a local level, with several regions preferring to be managed by a Committee rather than an RO backed up by an Assistant. This should work as you have more people sharing the workload and the responsibility. We were asked to clarify the position about free memberships and have decided that each region has two to allocate. I will close with the good news that the Club finances are in good shape. The regional dividend is being paid again this year at £4 per member including admin.

Club news 2013 is the twentieth anniversary of our club, and the committee have planned a wide range of events to celebrate, making it a real year to remember, from trackdays to our annual show at Gaydon.

TIPEC Annual General Meeting April 7th (Saturday) 10:00am for 10:30 start Coventry Transport Museum Millenium Place, Hales Street, Coventry CV1 1JD

The venue for this years AGM is home to the worlds largest collection of British Transport and the 763mph ThrustSSC. We have arranged parking in front of the museum for Porsches only. We keep the AGM informal and quickly get through the formalities so that we can have a good chat about the Club and the year ahead. Drinks and pastries will be served from 10:00 and a buffet lunch provided after the meeting. You are then free to explore the museum until 16:30. Please confirm your attendance by email to cluboffice@tipec.net by April 1st, so that we can arrange catering.

Donington Historic Festival May 3rd–5th (Friday–Sunday) The Club will have a display at this event including infield parking. We have arranged buy one get one free tickets saving £36 on a three day pass, deadline for booking with the discount is April 19th. Visit www.doningtonhistoric.com and use code TIPECDHF13.

Silverstone Classic July 26–28th (Friday–Sunday) The Club will have a display at this event including infield parking. We have arranged buy one get one free ticket package saving £80 on a three day pass. There are also additional discounts if booked by 31st March. Visit www.silverstoneclassic.com and use code C13242.

Blyton Park is new Tarmac with a combination of long straights, slow and fast corners, and large tarmac run off areas. This event is probably the safest arena you will find to drive your Porsche as it was designed to be driven—fast. The format is open pit lane and we have limited the event to just 50 cars. This will ensure there is plenty of room on track and give entrants time to get into a rhythm. Professional instructors are available free of charge for those that would like to improve their lap times. Additional drivers and passengers are allowed. Jon Mitchell from JMGarage, Porsche Independent Specialists, from Christchurch, will be on hand with technical advice. Jon will have a variety of lubes, a diagnostic kit and his tool box with him just in case there are any minor issues mechanically on the day. Helmets are required and are available to hire, arms and legs must be covered. The cost is £120 for car and driver, additional drivers £35, passengers £10, helmets £10. To book go to www.trackaction-online.co.uk click on Track Days then click on April.

Member’s cars Graham Britt has upgraded to a new Porsche … well, new to him anyway! Regular readers of All Torque and members of the South Yorkshire & North Notts region will recognise this blue beastie …

And so I can report that on transfer deadline day, SYNN region member Graham Britt has swooped into the transfer market. I have recently purchased from SYNN ARO Mr Dean Lancashire the ‘star striker’ 996 coupé Turbo, finished in the all Riviera Blue strip. And may the Lord forgive me …

Yes it’s true that this has been my key transfer target for the last three years—but I didn’t mean now whilst I’m doing okay in the league without it, so to speak! Would have been better if the opportunity came my way when I’d been in the relegation zone … Dean placed this car on the transfer list with good reason, and whilst I’m not at liberty to say what’s followed it suffice to say that he’s a man with an eye for goal and his own new signing is still of Stuttgart origin. Stand easy. But that’s a story for another day and another exciting All Torque episode. A considerable transfer fee has been paid, with potential add-on fees to follow, based on appearances (at the Nordschleife where else?) and ‘goals’ (sub 8:30 min laps perhaps?). Don’t think it’s a TIPEC SYNN transfer record (£££s), but it can’t be too far away!

We’ve even managed to form a TIPEC sub-group known as the Blue 911 Man Group (eagle-eyed readers will spot the clue there re Dean’s new car, eh!) I’ve taken a lot of flack. Bathroom blue, little-boys-bedroom blue, etc etc … but I think I’m coping. I should have had a bit more foresight before dishing it out in the past, perhaps? Just the small matter of selling my 993 now! Well, you can’t drive two at once—although I’ll be very honest, whilst the 996 Turbo is a quantum leap forward (technology, pace, etc etc), my 993 has bags more character somehow. OK I’ll quit whilst I’m behind. Fingers crossed for many a happy mile of 996 motoring though. ‘Kettles’ as we used to call them when I was waving the 993 flag!

The timing of the transfer was such that Dean and I were able to announce the news during SYNN’s Cotswolds Weekend of the Year— which caused a certain amusement for us both. Well it seemed funny at the time anyway. Of course the transfer did also mean that Dean was able to hand back the ‘boy becomes man’ gold medal which I’d given him three years earlier to reward his own Boxster/911 progress!

All Torque 97 page 7

Member’s cars Paul Dunster bought his Boxster at the start of June 2012, just in time to enjoy open-top motoring through the summer. A nice thought, shame the summer didn’t really happen this year!

The choice of the Boxster was after a long thought process having previously had three 911s: a 911SC, a 997 Carrera and finally a 3.2 Carrera. Yes, in that order and after admitting to my daughter that the only real Porsche is a 911. Oops. The Boxster for me is a compromise car that allowed me to reduce the car count, replacing both the 3.2 Carrera and my 2002 Toyota MR2. So far I have not been disappointed (except for the lack of open top motoring this summer), however I do still miss the 997! The Boxster has done everything I need, with lots of carrying space, good performance and excellent overtaking ability but also with good economy. It has not been without its problems but fortunately only a few. When I bought the car it was just coming up to three years old, so needed an MOT and the front discs were found to be corroded and in need of replacement despite having done only 17k miles. I checked under the battery box cover to find a Halfords battery in place—now I’m sure this would not have been original fitment by Porsche so must have been replaced already. Why do Porsche batteries not last more than three years (I always connect the conditioner if the car is not going to be used for more than a few days)? The first problem I experienced was the car not wanting to start, so I took it back to the garage where they connected the diagnostic machine and detected no faults, which was reassuring, therefore advising that the problem would be the clutch pedal switch, which was duly changed and this has solved the problem. More annoying though was the low pressure found in the rear tyre and when taking the wheel off to clean the inside, to find a nail in the tread. Off to the local tyre shop, who advised that as the nail was within the tread it would be repairable, which they did, however when they put air into the tyre the sidewall blistered. The only solution was a nice new Michelin but they didn’t charge me for the puncture repair. A most unusual problem happened as I was returning home one day with the car still cold, so travelling at a moderate pace, when a bird swept down in front of me. I didn’t take too much notice as there was no sign of feathers flying in the rear view mirror. When I got home I left the car on the drive ready to give it a wash but when I looked at it later there was something sticking out of the front radiator grille on the off-side. Closer inspection revealed a bird trapped behind the grille bars! I got a rod to try and encourage it out the way it went in but to no avail, at a loss to know what to do next I called the RSPCA

who sent a very helpful officer along, although I was not too happy at the idea of him removing the front bumper! We found that by removing the sidelight there was enough room to get a hand in and lift the bird out. It was a young magpie, so just as well I didn’t put my hand in myself as apparently they can be quite aggressive. Anyway, this was very useful as I now knew how to get the vacuum cleaner nozzle in there to remove debris that can harm the radiators. That was within the first few weeks and since then all I have done is put petrol in and washed the car over the 2k miles (which would have been greater if the sun had been shining more). We have been to a few events together, starting with the Bugatti Owners Club Garden Party at Prescott Hill Climb where both my daughter and myself had a few runs up the hill. Next was the PCGB National day at Chateau Impney where the Boxster was lined up with an array of other Porsches. We have attended the local regional meeting (Central) at the Westmead Hotel and some nights it was even dry enough to line up with other Porsches. A sad occasion was to attend the funeral service of central region member Graham Kirk but we did him proud with a convoy of 11 Porsches following the hearse. Back to the racetrack then, to join the Central Region with a day at the Curborough Sprint Track, which is only short but has enough features to be very entertaining. A great start to Boxster ownership. Here’s to the next six months— and what about a trip to Europe?

Member’s mods John Persaud’s Cayman S has been transformed with the insertion of a clear panel to put its engine on show—and the engine’s been detailed with painted manifolds to make it worth looking at!

yet light and possesses great optical clarity and transmits over 92% light so it is virtually indistinguishable from glass and it will not shatter in an accident. The engine cover and heat shield are removed and then the inlet manifolds are degreased and then painted with high temperature paint and the rest of the engine bay is cleaned and then the inlet manifolds are refitted and the engine bay is finally detailed. The finished result is great and I am sure the team at Brake Calliper Specialists would welcome undertaking more projects like this. Overall, the project costs in the region of £1400 but that depends on what level of detailing you want and what colour scheme you desire.

I have always loved the sound of both the engines from my previous Boxster S and now the Cayman S. Visually however, the engine it is probably Porsche’s best kept secret—there is nothing you can see without removing a lot of basic covering and heat shields! I visited an open evening at an OPC where there was a Cayman S owner who had had a clear engine cover fitted and had the inlet manifold painted in the scheme of silver and red with Porsche written in white to match the brake callipers.

Brake Calliper Specialists are a small outfit with four outlets in the Derby/Nottingham area and they specialise in refurbishment of alloy wheels, painting brake callipers … and obviously now doing inlet manifold painting work for the Cayman S! If you are interested call Richard Munt on 01159 722 668 or visit their website at www.Brake-Caliper-Painting.com Alternatively, in the Worcestershire area, Richard at RSR Autotech Bromsgrove can also provide this service. Contact him on 01527 872 656 or on email at info@rsr-autotech.co.uk Richard is well known to TIPEC Central members.

This was a revelation and I felt that my car deserved this makeover to show off the beautiful engine bay. I just wanted to have a beautifully detailed visible mid-engine car which would allow my Cayman to join the ranks of the Ferrari 360 and 430, Lamborghini Gallardo and Audi R8 to name a few! I tried three independent specialists to try and get this project done but the only viable option was a company called Brake Calliper Specialists. The engine cover is molded acrylics panel (MAP) made by an American Company called Holmer at info@hip-designllc.com. These covers are not cheap at $885 including taxes and freight (about £600 depending on the exchange rate), but are of very high quality. MAP has a lot of other industrial applications and is used in aeroplanes, submarines and crane cabs. This polymer is very strong

All Torque sent its Northern correspondent to the Greater Manchester area in search of two relics from a bygone age. But let’s not dwell on the cars’ owners …

Nonidentical

twins Two 911 Carrera 3.2s which live within a stone’s throw of each other and which outwardly look pretty similar, but their stories are somewhat different. Bob’s white with red 3.2: “It’s a 1989 Carrera Sport” says Bob, “I’ve owned the car for nine years and have no intention of selling it anytime soon! It’s done less than 47,000 miles and is a mostly original car.” Bob tells me that his car is pretty much as it left the factory and that’s the way he likes it. He admits that he has had a Dansk stainless exhaust system fitted and inside there’s a fire extinguisher down by the passenger seat held in place using Brey-Krause hardware. “I saw a car catch fire last year and felt hopeless that I couldn’t do anything to help. The extinguisher was purchased soon after that” he says.

Bob went on to say “There’s nothing I don’t like about this car. I love the shape and the view down the bonnet and over the wings from the drivers’ seat. I like the smell when I open the door and the way the seats embrace me. Not everything about an old 911 is perfect, but some of the imperfections shine through as character and I’d not have it any other way.” I wondered if there were drawbacks to both owning and using such an original car: “As I’ve mentioned, the car is no garage queen but I do like to keep it as immaculate as I can. Whenever I’m planning a long trip I mask off the leading edges of the bodywork with clear film to prevent stone chips. It’s a chore but it works. I almost enjoy cleaning the car as much as I enjoy driving it!”

I love the shape and the view down the bonnet and over the wings from the drivers’ seat.

The red Carrera graphics and wheel centres are as the car was purchased. “I was told they were ordered by the first owner. The carpets are red and the seats are piped in red, so it all seems to follow a theme. Whether the graphics and wheel colour were a factory order or not I don’t know, but I like them and wouldn’t change them!” says Bob.

I guess we’re looking at a ‘garage queen’ then? “I don’t use the car every day, far from it, but it isn’t taken off the road for the winter either and I love to use it on a sunny winter day and have a good run out. I’ve also taken it to the Nürburgring twice and to the Le Mans 24 hour race twice. There’s been a long distance European road-trip too, through France and into Italy and Switzerland. I try to do at least one ‘interesting’ trip in it each year, though I do keep an eye on the mileage. It’s insured on a limited mileage policy and for an agreed value”.

Graeme’s white with blue 3.2 ‘Club Sport’: “First things first” says Graeme, “it’s not a real Club Sport, I added the graphics after the paint was done—it’s my personal take on a sensibly modified 3.2”.

So, what are we looking at? It’s a 1987 Carrera with a G50 gearbox and the speedo shows around 83,000 miles. Graeme says he’s owned the car about five years and has been tinkering with it ever since. He’s owned plenty of air-cooled 911’s over the years and this one is the culmination of all his experience. Body-wise, there’s been a glass-out repaint, the bumpers have been completely stripped and zinc etched, whilst the Fuchs wheels have been totally refurbished and wear Bridgestone SO2 tyres.

The suspension has been fully refreshed to what Graeme refers to as ‘Club Sport spec’, featuring Bilstein shocks, new top-hats and uprated bushes. The geometry was aligned by Chris Franklin at Centre Gravity to his (CF’s) preferred Club Sport values. The braking system has been fully overhauled and includes DS3000 Ferodo pads squeezed by ATE Super Blue fluid. Inside, Graeme has performed a rear-seat delete along with removal of the rear seat-belts. There’s cobalt blue carpet (by Southbound Trimmers), a genuine Club Sport steering wheel and front belts in blue which match the colour of the wheels and graphics. The engine was removed and sent to Redtek, where Nick Fulljames worked his air-cooled magic . I don’t think there’s any need to offer further details, suffice to say that any horses lost from the 3.2 stable over the years have are now back and fully harnessed, breathing in through a K&N filter and out through a Dansk stainless steel exhaust system.

many of the high Alpine passes. Closer to home the car has done some of the best Scottish roads too”. Graham continued: “For me it’s the small details on this car that I enjoy. The heating system works as well today as it ever did when new. The whole system was removed and replaced or refurbed as necessary before re-assembly so there’s nothing seized or broken. The headlamps have been re-wired as well—I upgraded the loom, added new relays and re-configured the switching. The lights work properly now and I can see where I’m going in the dark! The car is reasonably quick for an oldie, goes around corners pretty well and stops on a sixpence. I’m happy with that”.*

It‘s the small details on the car that I enjoy. The heating system works as well today as it ever did when new.

I asked Graeme about how he has used the car over the years: “It’s not a daily driver, but it does get me to work and back occasionally on a Saturday morning when there are fewer customers using our parking area! I enjoy taking the car to local shows—it achieved ‘Best Porsche’ at the very first Haigh Hall German Classics Car Show which was a great surprise. It has also been judged first at our local TIPEC annual concourse three times and has once come third. But it’s not just a show car, I’ve driven it to the Nürburgring twice and enjoyed several touristfahren sessions. I’ve also explored Switzerland and driven it over

So, two non-identical old 911s with rather different stories to tell. Thinking about it, I can’t help feeling that it’s not the cars that are the same, rather the owners—two Porsche fanatics, both passionate about their cars and the ownership experience; people who love to cherish their car and pour their hearts into them but also use them as the designers intended. Bob sums it all up: “Owning the car is something very special. Sometimes I only have to open the garage door to look at it to put a smile on my face. Member’s restorations After 18 months of hard work, Gary Ince’s 2.8 RSR recreation is still on target to come in under his original £15k budget. Surely a first for any Porsche restoration project, let alone for TIPEC!

I have been lucky enough to own a number of Porsches through the years and enjoyed the whole thing from driving to maintaining them, but there has always been one model that has kept on popping up into the grey matter in my head … the 2.8 RSR! In November 2010, I decided to sell my 1970 911 and began to look for a new project, it was time for an RSR recreation. I know this is frowned upon by many, but I knew that I could never afford the real thing! I decided to do a full restoration, by my own fair hands, setting a budget for under £15K (a tall order some might say). February 2011 came and the 1970 911 had gone, with that sad feeling that I have just let go of my car (what had I done?) I had been enquiring about a 1981 sc, which was already part stripped, as a donor car. The problem was the car was in Torquay and I lived in North Wales, so a viewing was out of the question. After many telephone conversations and emails with pictures, I was pleased to find that the car had some history with 911 & Porsche World magazine. The car was featured in September 2003, where they converted it into a road legal track car with 964 panels, then raffled it for charity. The previous owner had started work: the engine and gearbox was removed along with the front wings. The driver side sill, B pillar and wing support had been replaced, with pictures showing the inner sill and kidney bowl in good order. Eventually, we came to a deal with the same amount of work being done to the passenger side. This takes us to April, where I made arrangements to collect the car, however I needed to organise a trailer. Luckily there happened to be a drive day around North

Wales the previous month, where a club member offered to take me along. As we were talking I told him about my purchase and he offered me the use of his trailer—therefore I would like to thank Barry Steinhouse for that, and in addition for the many drives and trackdays he has taken me on while I have had no car. I arrived in North Wales early on a Sunday morning to meet my new project’s seller. He had pre-loaded the car with all the stripped parts and readied the engine on a pallet, eventually we finally got everything loaded and I got underway on the return journey. This drive was the longest I have ever experienced in my life. Over the hours and hours I could not stop thinking about what I had just done! With no time to waste over the next few weeks the car was on axle stands and stripped back to a wiring loom, so I could assess what I had let myself in for! The investigation found some rust (which led to some small holes) that needed to be repaired on the rear chassis legs and the front inner wing. Also the passenger side sill and B pillar had not been lined correctly. Over the next few months I spent many hours on my back, armed with a drill, many wire brush attachments and an angle grinder where necessary! Eventually the chassis was clean of rust. Any good original underseal was left on for extra protection. Now it was time to get the welder out and test my skills, as it had been a few years since I have used it. After a few practice attempts of welding on some spare metal I could get on with the repairs, away I went till I was happy with the chassis. Not being happy with the passenger side B pillar and sill, I had to unpick and re-hang them so the door sat correctly. Everything on the underside was seam-sealed and stonechipped. While all this was going on I was on the hunt for any parts I needed and making enquiries about bodykits, also selling anything of the car which I did not require. I eventually came across some panels on eBay, with an auction for a RSR rear bumper, front bumper and arches from GT Racing US, which I luckily won! Now having the rear arches they had to go on. Armed with tin snips and a help of a friend the rear quarters were measured, cut and rolled out so there was no step underneath, then the arches were bonded on.

Now the month is August and our region have a stand at the Tatton Hall classic car show. At previous club meetings everyone asked if I was taking the ‘car’ to the show, so with a little persuading, I said yes. Again, thank you to Barry for the use of his trailer. There was a slight problem thiugh, as at this point was the car was on still on the axle stands! I had to make a undercarriage on casters, which did also help to move the car in the garage. We all were shocked with the attention my still only just existant car could get, when there were all those other fantastic Porsches on the stand.

in my garage at home, finally I got rid of the overspray! The rest of the panels are being done at my friends garage, so I can carry on with the car rebuild.

The rest of the body kit was purchased from autobodykit.co.uk. The price of the panels did reflect on the finished quality, £700 for the two front wings with wide arches, bonnet and duck tail. The wings took a bit of sorting, I had to manufacture wing supports and indicator holders which got bonded on and supported the underside with a fibre glass matting so the gap could be made correct to the doors.

At the time of writing this (November 2012) the wings and bonnet are back and fitted and I am in the process of refitting/rewiring the lights with type R rear clusters. In the meantime the fuel tank has been altered so the fuel filler is under the bonnet. I forgot to mention that I also welded an RSR style strut brace which I fabricated myself. I am keeping the lightweight theme, but I am putting a dash top back in which is being re-trimed with knee pads, RS style door cards and footwell carpets. The doors will have Perspex windows with air slides. The wheels are 15" three piece Dage Compomotive which luckily I already have from an old car. I had the centres re-powder coated and the outer polished. To keep the cost down I managed to pick up some tyres for the rears on that good old auction site because the only tyres available are Michelin TB15 as the rear wheels are 10J and 8J on the front.

This now takes me to January 2010. All the panels are now hung and happy, but with all the gaps. many hours were spent shaping the panels. I was not happy with the roof shaping. When the car was prepared as a trackday car, the sunroof was welded in place. This meant that all the extra paint got stripped off the roof and anywhere else, all ten layers! I also had to remanufacture the lower dash, which had been cut out, so that I could re-house the heater air blower controls. Now I was happy with all the shaping it was time for etch primer and undercoat. Finally, the shell was primed, flattened and ready for some paint. The colour had to be Gulf Orange inside and out, and underbody. I would like thank my friend Mal, who has helped me with all the bodywork. The shell got painted

Once the paint was flattened and buffed on the roof and quarter panels, I fitted a new headliner, front/rear screen and Perspex rear window quarters. I then started on the suspension, which I had already prepared (stripped and repainted) with new Superflex polybushes supplied by Unit 11, with Turbo tie rod upgrade and Spax adjustable shocks. I then hung the main oil lines and oil cooler to get them in before the wings were back. Then the brakes were fitted. I used the standard brake callipers to keep the cost down, however I will in the future upgrade to the Boxster callipers. Stainless steel braided flexi hoses were also fitted.

As working progress goes on I am now starting to think about the engine. The car has covered 150k so I will be giving it a rebuild, which will be running on Webber carburettors. I can hear the sound of the trumpets barking already, which I have already sourced from the States, and the exhaust will be equal length headers with a two in, two out silencer from Turbo Thomas. As you can see its been a busy 18 months! I am still on target with my budget. I know the car will not be a concours Queen, but I feel as an enthusiast it will be finished to a high standard and it will get used on track and road. I hope you have enjoyed reading, I will give you an update in the future! Writing & photography by Gary Ince All Torque 97 page 13

Fire-breathing monsters James Garrard reports from a weekend spent trackside at Misano World Circuit race track, Italy 2012.

In an attempt to escape this year's pitiful summer here in the UK, and to satisfy my hunger for the smell of burning rubber, carbon monoxide and fine food, I find myself heading once again back to the Italian Riviera of Riccione. Following the my last report from Misano in All Torque last December (issue 91), I managed to befriend the ‘Sportlife Racing 2’ team. This year myself and my lovely wife Alison were invited back for the weekend trackside! We started off with a fortnight’s well earned rest at our favourite hotel, Harry’s, in the resort of Riccione, a short hop from the beach. Once again we were greeted in warm fashion by Giulietta and her Mum, swiftly followed by the big dumb look smiles and wavy hand gestures from me, and more annoyingly fluent Italian from the wife. After ten days of good wines, fine food with great friends and slow spit roasting on golden sands, the finale of the holiday was two days solid trackside with Massimiliano Lodi (Max) and Stefano Galeazzi, our team racing driver and host. I headed up the usual way to the circuit for the day by pedal power. At the gate I hit the first problem, trying to explain in English to an Italian, that tickets have been left at the gate for Mr J. Garrard from the UK! How hard can

it be? VERY! After trying to get hold of Max without success on the mobile, who at the time was trying to sort out problems in FIA scrutinising, the guy on the gate eventually let me go 50 yards to the Sportlife Racing 2 team area to get Max to come back to get the tickets for trackside. After much hunting I eventually find Max who was not best pleased to find out about my problems getting in and five minutes later he returns with the passes for the weekend, “Sorry about that Mr James, if you give an Italian a cap and a simple task, he thinks he becomes the boss of everything!” This got us off to a good start. After the introductions to big boss man Stefano Galeazzi, a large middle aged bold character, with a inviting smile and personality to match, I was introduced to the rest of the team. The other driver Giacomo Jelmini races white with blue stripe 3.0 ltr 930 RSR and his son Felice who also races for the team in a red 1300 Alfa giulia GT. I was invited in and given a welcome drink, which after the ride in the heat, was much needed. I was introduced to the chief mechanic Claudio, a

quiet well rounded sort of chap with a sprig of grey hair, who was intently looking over Max’s white with red stripe 3.0 ltr 930RSR, trying to find why, during qualifying, sparks were seen from the rear of the car. He is a man of much wisdom it seems, and the problem was soon found. So from this point onward I will simply call him Yoda (as in Jedi Master). Max’s RSR had been through a full overhaul during the winter months and converted from a six point ignition system to a 12 point ignition system. Apparently the reason it was down on power was a spark plug had been over tightened and had stripped the thread on the cylinder manifold during the reassembly. Also, the straight through exhaust had developed a crack halfway down its length. The decision was made to haul the car back to the workshop 20 miles away to try and make good some repairs. This meant Max would be unable to race the first two hour endurance race of the weekend, he simply said “better to rectify the problem and do a good race tomorrow, than not race at all this weekend” I truly was in the realm of professionals.

At this point he said “well we go now to watch Felice Jelmini in the first race, we lunch, and you are very welcome to stay with us”. Anyone mentioning free food and trackside viewing of Porsches is a friend of mine. So we headed off to the track which also gave me a chance to get used to my new Canon camera. The pit wall was certainly a different place to be standing; Just a year before I was up there in the stands like all the other spectators, yet here I was, trackside up close and personal with the cars and the drivers. The stuff dreams are made of. Felice, despite only being 16, drove an aggressive race, and seemed to fly around the 4.064km track. Max and the pit crew watched with enthusiasm at the screens, cheering at their team mate as he flew past, then in he’d come, for a fuel refill and a rapid tyre change, not quite as fast as seen in F1, and with more of a relaxed attitude. Back out to complete the race, which by the closing stages was finished with a lunch time rain shower. Refreshing but still a shower! Following the results we all got into Italy’s favourite pastime (and mine), FOOD! A full three courses for the whole team followed by wine or soft drinks (for the pit crew) and coffee, and if Stefano had his way, it would

have ended in a drinking game of limoncello or sambuca and me wobbling around a pit lane all afternoon. You have to be careful with these ’ere Italians you know! It was at this point I met the rest of Max’s family; his wife Silvia, a slim built raven haired beautiful woman with an equally beaming smile, and their two sons, Ricky & Tommy, who I suspect will soon follow in Dad’s footsteps judging by the way they hurled themselves around the paddock on scooters.

BMWs, Lotuses, Alfas, a Lancia Beta Monte Carlo which looked incredible, and of course no less than eleven Porsche 911s, 930s including a rare factory 935. The pit was cleared the lights went down and they were off, all hurtling towards the first turn at the end by the pit lane exit. What a noise, what a buzz! I was in Porsche heaven! After a few laps the field had spread out a little with the 935 and the Monte Carlo flying around the track, swiftly followed by the Porsches, BMW and the Escort with the Lotus and Alfas bringing up the rear.

Following lunch—and rather ominously still no sign of Max’s 930 RSR—the team readied themselves for the afternoon’s first historic race of two hours. I took my chance to do the tourist thing and grab a few pictures with Max and Giacomo in and by the white with blue stripe RSR and by the time that was done the drivers had to get ready too. With only the white and blue striped RSR and Felice’s Alfa Giulia, the team headed out to the pit area. By the time I had done a quick scout of the other teams including the pit lane (remember this is Italy so none of that health and safety crap like in the UK), the race was about to begin.

The pit lane was a hive of activity; with a few coming in for fuel at the same time, a tyre change on one of the Alfas and sadly a retirement from one of the other Porsches due to fuel problems. The clouds were rolling in again by the time Giacomo came in for his refuelling stop, tyre change and with a quick wash of his screen, drink and thumbs up to my camera; he was off again heading into 5th place. With the race two thirds in and the threat of thunder and a pending downpour from a storm front closing in, Giacomo managed to fend off his opponents and gain an extra place, moving up to fourth until the end. The young and talented Felice in the Alfa concluded his junior class of the race with a very respectable placement and he walked away with the cup, so the afternoon had finally turned out well for the team.

The starting grid for the Memorial Angelo Rossi race consisted of twenty-six cars, all historic and ranging from Mk1 Ford Escort,

As the finishing cars headed off to the holding area for the FIA scrutinising to commence, I noticed the trailer coming back with Max’s Writing & photography by James Garrard All Torque 97 page 15

RSR on it. This could only mean one thing, it had been repaired. Sadly though, the racing for the team was over for the day, so the only testing was around the paddock. The exhaust was fully welded and now secure, but the problem with the cross threaded spark plug still remained, so it was capped off and only ran on one plug instead of the required two. This now meant the car would be slightly down on power but could still take part in the second endurance race the following day, “it's all about points in this game”, said Max, as he tried to hide his disappointment. The team started to pack everything down for the night and prepare for the night’s entertainment to which my wife Alison and I were invited. This would consist of another four course meal with what I can only conclude as drinks of all manner of description, so before heading back to the hotel to change, I quickly headed off for more pictures at the pits and out trackside to get up close and personal with some of the teams on the grid at the start of the next race, the Gruppo Peroni 6 Ore. I felt like Jake Humphrey seeing the teams so close. The starting line up of the team cars consisted of Ferrari F458s Porsche GT3 RSRs, BMW M3s and even two KTM XBOWs. Having seen how this was run last year, I only saw the beginning of the race, then donned my waterproof for the pending shower and headed back to the hotel. I got halfway back to the hotel when the heavens opened, so by the time I got back I looked like a drowned rat! When it rains here, it rains! Alison wasn’t keen on a wet cycle ride back to the track, so we phoned one of our Italian friends and blagged a lift back at 7pm. By the time we got dropped off it was nearly 7:30 and the party (and downpour) was in full swing. The six hour race was about halfway through at this point, and due to the deluge was temporally stopped while the heavens opened. The rain was so heavy. Stefano and Yoda were in the hospitality tent doing their impression of Singing in the Rain, very comical. As we sat amongst the rest of the team, sharing food and wine, Max came and sat at the head of the table with my wife, and we started to talk about Italy, the state of the economic climate and how hard it has been for his business since the big crash. It seems they have had it a lot tougher than us, he also added that sponsorship for the team had been down compared with other years, which made me realise just how much race teams depend on contributions from outside means. The conversation then drifted towards how he had got into racing with the team, and how he had changed from 4x4 rallying to classic Porsches. We discovered that he also has a daily driver 996 and a classic car for the high days and holidays, however the car he was most passionate about was his rebuild on his very own classic RS, due to be finished later on this year. It had been completely stripped out and overhauled from

the wheels up. (Lucky bugger, not that I’m the jealous type … much!) We spoke about the problems surrounding his 930 during the day, and concluded that the cylinder manifold head would have to be replaced, a setback for the weekend but nothing that couldn’t be rectified for the next scheduled weekend’s racing at Imola in September. By the time we had eaten, the bottles of vino had run dry, the rain had lifted and the six hour endurance race was back in full swing. So while some of the team headed back to their hotel, Alison & I headed trackside with Max and his family to grab the last pictures of racing that day. Stadler Motorsport’s Porsche GT3 RSR seemed to be at their usual warp speed along the pit wall, easily doing in excess of 180mph, with that distinctive crack from the exhaust gases hitting the cold night air as it passed us time and time again. The winner in their Ferrari F458 flew across the line to a multitude of fireworks and music at around 12:20am. Max very kindly gave us a lift back to the hotel and on saying our farewells for a wonderful evening, we had just enough time for a small nightcap before bed. After waking with a surprisingly clear head, a hearty breakfast of croissants and bomboloni was required before heading back to the track for around 10am. The team had been there since around 8am which left me feeling guilty for getting there so late. The racing was already underway and the team tents were the usual hive of activity. Max was already eager to go and I just had enough time to

As the cars made their way to the grid, I headed up into the stands for some high level pictures, and the air was heavy with the anticipation of the start. The mood seemed more aggressive in the pits today. This was the big race of the weekend, the one that counted. Max was on the grid with teammates Giacomo & Felice again in the Alfa, the lights were red and everyone held their breath, then they were gone. The Lancia Beta Monte Carlo took the lead, swiftly followed by the Porsches like an angry cloud of hornets. The Escort Mk 1 tried to hold its own but, like the Alfas, were no match for the Porsches. Sadly the 935 had to retire due to an electrical fault the day before which opened up the battle between the Porsches and the Lancia, which although I am biased to Porsches, was a stunning car. Despite the hard work by the team on Max’s car, it was still struggling to keep up the pace, owing to the power displacement he came in shortly after the start with a possible fuel problem, soon rectified with a flare from the exhaust when the car started again. By the halfway point he was in again with more problems, a battery strap had come loose. I could see he was very frustrated but he still held his 14th place throughout the race. Giacomo on the other hand was still flying around and at the half way point, with the usual tyre change/refuelling I again got the thumbs up, before he headed out in to fourth place. By this time the carnage was rife, some had retired early, and a Porsche littered the track with a broken drive shaft as I headed out on foot to some of the furthest turns from the stands. The day was warming up with the sun finally back, and the race was nearly at an end. My last few shots included the fire-breathing monster from the Rennsport Team. This was a Turbo powered 911 and was eating the naturally aspirated cars for breakfast. A few laps from the end the decision was made by Giacomo to put the hammer down and fight for third place, and lo and behold Giacomo had gained the place he needed to come in third which he held until he crossed the line. Once the cars were in the award ceremonies took place for the drivers, and just before Giacomo & Max came out to collect their third place award for the team, I took a glance over my shoulder to see Yoda leaning on Giacomo’s RSR smiling with contentment. I think a good weekend was had by all. A Big Thank you to Massimiliano Lodi, Stefano Galeazzi and the rest of Team Sportlife Racing 2, for a truly remarkable weekend trackside. Gruppe North If I look back on 2012, the handful of dry days that we have had recently come as a welcome contrast to the dreadful weather that impacted numerous events throughout the past year. The picture of my 911 Flatnose sitting up to its axles in mud and long grass at the Cholmondeley Pageant of Power will take some time to erase from memory. Our final meeting of 2012 was our annual Christmas Dinner at the Whipping Stocks. A good evening was had by all with 17 members joining in on the festivities. It was great to see some couples in attendance—Gareth and Stephanie, and Steve and Julie (Hulme)—and some old friends such as Randy Sweeting, back from exile in Spain with his swanky new wheels. The group of people that we had together summed up what the club is about. Like-minded, genuine enthusiasts that don’t mind braving the weather for a catch up on all matters Porsche.

The diet starts next Monday as the saying goes ... The region's Christmas bash was a super night out up in Fort William at the Moorings Hotel. It was a great night out in good company, a fair travel for all of us in fairness but nevertheless well worth it. Everyone enjoyed it, a super weekend in great company once again. Many thanks to everyone who attended. I have included a couple of photos as a wee reminder of the evening and Jamie McNeill even trying to impersonate a reindeer amongst the party night games! In the last All Torque I summed up the 2012 season with all the region did over the year. All those ideas came from you, the members, and for me it was a good year full of different venues and of course some of the old mixed in for good measure. I hope your ideas for 2013 will be rolling in soon as it is coming to the time for deciding what we as a region will be attending this year and as always your suggestions are paramount.

Brian Wood and myself attended the NEC Classic Car Show in November and it was a far bigger show last year than I have ever seen. Well worth a visit. A few of you have expressed an interest for this year and Brian and I will tell you it will not disappoint. I have circulated suggestion forms via email to you all so please put your thinking cap on, fill them in and send them back ASAP.

We are at the point again of pulling together our planned programme of events for the coming year. This exercise highlights the commitments needed from key individuals to ensure that these events happen. It also emphasizes the importance of having the support of the region’s members in order to make such efforts worthwhile. With that in mind, we have taken the decision to form a committee to share the burden of ‘making things happen’ across the year. By involving a wider body of views, we hope that it will also help ensure a broader variety of activities, events and club meeting speakers etc.

In the next All Torque I will submit a wee article regarding help for your Porsche North of the border, so look out for that one.

The Committee comprises Steve Taylor (primary contact), myself (Dave Watson), Dave Mercer, Barry Stenhouse, Terry Murphy and Gary Ince. Dave Mercer has volunteered to manage communications from the region online and so please check the TIPEC forum periodically for information on events and specific dates.

Well, 2013 has arrived and i look forward to all your suggestions etc, and of course seeing you and your Porsches throught the season is an absolute must!

As a provisional 2013 calendar of events, the Committee is working towards organizing the following itinerary:

North West RO Andrew Lane 01772 740 625 07949 167 698 (mobile) andrewclane@btopenworld.com ARO Richard Sholl 07970 147 779 (mobile) rksholl@sky.com Meetings are held first Monday of every month from 8pm at The Dressers Arms, near Wheelton, Chorley PR6 8HD. When this falls on a Bank Holiday, we meet on the second Monday instead. I think we would all agree in the North West region that 2012 was a very active and successful year. But before we recap on the last few months, I would like to wish all our North West, and National, members a very Happy New Year and I hope you all had a very merry Christmas. Did the love of your life get a lovely surprise from Santa (and also the better half!?) November got us underway with our annual quiz and once again we were absolutely thrilled with the prizes that were very kindly donated from Porsche Centres Wilmslow and Bolton. Again we had a great selection of prizes ranging from model cars to special edition coffee mugs that were large enough for you to swim in! I always say to our members that they are always worth considering when looking to buy or service your car as well as the independents. The quiz itself was hosted by ARO Richard Sholl and once again he did a sterling job. Plenty of head scratching ensued as well as friendly banter, cries of “Stewards Enquiry!” and the like. Nearly everyone went home with something. We usually get enough prizes to give everyone a chance of a prize so make sure you get yourself down this year in November. The last run out of the year was the to the Lakeland Motor Museum. We have visited this venue before, but this time was with some new members, so a new experience for them. The morning weather was looking great and the general feeling was that we

would get around 7–8 cars. It turned out that we set off with 13 cars. A fantastic effort by everybody considering it was so deep into the year. We had 911 C2Ss, Caymans, GT3s, 3.2 Carreras and Boxsters, a real mixture. The Lakeland museum is a lovely little place. They don’t change too often but it is always worth a look. Afterwards we had lunch in the café, followed by a spirited run over to Settle. Some went their separate ways at this point whilst others carried on ‘living the dream’ for a little longer. A great turn out. Many thanks. December kicked things off with our monthly meeting and I have to say it was a pleasure having our Membership Secretary, Lee Reader as an unexpected guest. Lee was down in Manchester on business so was a pleasant surprise. Thanks for coming Lee. We usually have a bit of a Christmas gathering for this meeting, and I suppose it’s testimony to our regular meeting attendees that we were packed out in the room that we have reserved each month. From both Richard and me, we really can’t thank you all enough for making the effort throughout the year. Without you turning up it would mean nothing. And for those reading this who have yet to venture out to the Dressers on a Monday, I urge you to give it a go. We don’t bite. I’m sure you will enjoy it. Whilst we are on the subject of monthly meetings I would just like to bring to your attention that ARO Dave Hallet has decided to step down due to a heavy work schedule. We wish him well. Finally for 2012 we had the TIPEC NW Christmas do. In recent years we frequented the Viking at Blackpool but felt like it was time for a bit of a change. The Inn on the Prom in St Annes was the chosen venue based on a recommendation. Some people were able to make it over in the afternoon and make a bit of a day of it whilst we were very sorry to hear that Andy & Debbie Tyldesley didn’t get over due to being poorly. The evening was all the poorer without their presence. We started off in reception with canapes before heading down to the main room for the evening. Unofficial/official snapper Tony

(991 C2S) was straight into action with his ‘Lens’ Lens’ capturing our moments from stone cold sober to full on party animal (well alright just me then. Have a look on the NW pages to see the pics!) I think the line of the night was “Ladies and Gentlemen will you please climb down from your seats for the main course!” We even won (dubiously) the quiz with Mrs L picking up a bottle of plonk for our efforts. A great night was had by all and no-one was left sitting in their seat. For those who couldn’t make it you missed a cracker. Details will be given in due course for this year. Make sure you get yourselves along!

That just leaves us with letting you know what’s on for the year ahead. We have a plan taking us up to around September. Hopefully with better weather we can to a few more car shows than we did last year. We all know that things will get added before then and things may change so have look and I hope we can rely on you support for the year ahead. Also as we always say, the best way to get the low down is to get along to the meetings or to check the NW region’s page on the TIPEC website. Here’s looking forward to seeing you in 2013!

Did Santa bring you the Porsche you wanted? I am still waiting for my 911 and my 944 Turbo race engine! The Christmas curry night was attended by the usual club members who enjoyed good Indian cuisine and the delights of the local pub for a beer or two. Thanks for coming.

I would like to see more members at events next year and possibly a new RO for me to support. My commitments at work and racing mean unfortunately I cannot devote as much time to TIPEC as I would like to, but the North East needs this Porsche club and I have enjoyed being involved with it over the past nine years. With the lack of a RO it’s up to the members and myself to keep the club going. If you have any events or activities you would like to attend I am always willing to help were I can.

April 20th (Saturday) TIPEC Porsche only track-day at Blyton Park A few NW region members are now booked onto this event—see the thread on the Club forum for more details or call Andy/Richard on the numbers above.

2012 review The year started with a visit to the Autosport show in January where myself and fellow TIPEC member John Armstrong name dropped that I was the ARO for the TIPEC club. We were dually invited on to the official Porsche stand for a close up look at the prototype hybrid 918 and the 911 racing hybrid spawned from the same Williams F1 technology in its 918. As you would expect from Porsche the cream scone nibbles were delicious. The show was outstanding with talks from the Le Mans winning Audi driver Tom Kristensen and F1 driver David Coulthard. The Ayton Senna tribute was fantastic for a F1 fan like myself to see.

no one knew it would be the wettest year on record. The first opportunity to blow the cobwebs away came in March when the guys met up at the Sporting Lodge to have the usual run over the moors to Malton Supercar Sunday, the Big Breakfast. I love this event and not just because of the winding, deserted, morning roads that lead to the impromptu gaggle of super cars that park half on and off the kerbs up and down the industrial estate. With all those Lambos, Porsches and Ferraris on show I was drawn to a Talbot Lotus Sunbeam (I owned a Sunbeam TI rally car in my youth) however this car was Jean Todts, from his youth. Jean was responsible for the 205 T16 team, Jean went on to run Schumacher’s Ferrari F1 team and is now president of the FIA and yet there it was; his Sunbeam on the kerb in north Yorkshire! The next few weekend saw me working on my race car and friends’ racers. The hard work resulted in a win for Evo I give race support to, on its first outing in the first race of the season at Knockhill. My first outing of the year in the 924 resulted in two of my best races, a personal best lap time and a blown engine when the bottom end let go. A few more weekends in the shed and a bottom end rebuild for the 924. The next outing was off to Croft to test at a Ford RS day with the EVO after the EVO had had several teething problems during the race weekend were I had done so well. Several local car shows were attended during the summer, starting with Swainby, a local show boasting some exotic classic vehicles from AC, Jaguar and a large collection of British classic bikes. The club also attended the Terry Dickinson charity car show were a mix of vehicles from modern Porsches to Group B RS200 and 6R4 were on show alongside a Bigfoot type 4x4 and a R8. Sadly Terry passed away a few months after. Hopefully this will be made into a memorial event to pay tribute to him and his motorsport history. I was accompanied to the annual TIPEC show this year by one fellow member, the two water cooled Porsches made the trip down to the show incident free as you would expect. We enjoyed our day out at a relaxed,

blast to Malton for the Air Ambulance support Super Car Sunday. An equally impressive event giving us the chance to look at the 962 Derick Bell road legal Le Mans sports car. A few of the lads hung around to see the Minardi F1 car started. This car came from the end of an era with its Judd engine. There was not a laptop in sight as a pneumatic starter was un-ceremonially shoved up the rear and it barked into life. What a fantastic sound to behold and worth the wait. We then headed off to catch up the guys who left early. We met them at a wet Croft race circuit (is there any other type) at the Jaguar owners club track day. With only two sessions left to watch we decided to end the day with a warm pub meal. This only leaves me to share my New Year resolutions with you. • Loose some weight (make the race car faster) • Attend more car shows • Run the bug up the Saltburn hill climb Why not make yours to attend more club meetings?

well put together show. This year it was John’s turn to find a bargain in the stalls, buying a pair of S2 Brembo callipers for £10 for his race car build. This year seem to be the year of clashed events for me, with family commitments, weddings, racing and holidays all having to fit in with club events. I finally found a window in my schedule and went to the Saltburn hill climb for vintage vehicles. Attending this year was an immaculately restored Lea Francis— one of the owner’s three Lea cars and of only six in

existence. I have said before that to see these old vehicles at full chat is much better than looking at them polished up in a car park. The event has expanded to allow pre 74 vehicles a chance to run up the hill. Hopefully next year I will take my Porsche designed VW beetle up the hill after being off the road for three years. The bug is back on the road and will be taking me to club meetings until the 944 is back on the road in the summer. In August the club meeting was well attended and we even managed to sit out on the patio. The year ended as it began with a

By the time you read this we will have had our first monthly meeting and be planning our activities and events for 2013. To see off 2012 we had a lovely Christmas Lunch at Alveston House Hotel—it was lovely to see those of you that joined in the fun. 2013 includes several national events planned to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of TIPEC so I hope lots of you will join in some of those as well as our own local events and get-togethers. I have been in negotiations with a recommended hotel in Portmadog and have put together a weekend trip which I am calling The TIPEC Bristol Road Trip. I’ve got us a great deal and will be sending out a flyer by email and handing out at the meeting so I hope to put a group together for this for the trip in September. We did have the SYNN Christmas meeting and party which were a huge success. December ‘Christmas’ Meeting The annual voting was announced for the RO & ARO positions, which ensured Myself & Dean retained our positions respectively. Thanks to all members for their support. We then had, as usual, the now traditional hilarious SYNN slide show! This included the ‘Rogues Gallery’ of 2012. A few laughs were had, from the slides of our members past and present, in various guises and haircuts (Ray & Anita!) We also had a show of Judith’s pictures of her beloved 944 in various stages of repair from her major bodywork renewal! Hope you can all make next year’s slide show as funny as you have 2012’s.

SYNN Christmas Party Our annual party at Ye Olde Bell was on the 15th, which was a lovely night of chat, music, Dad dancing (!) and secret Santa! We had a good turnout of members who made the night very special. Ye Olde Bell is a wonderful venue and really knows how to have a special Christmas bash. A lovely night and not to be missed in 2013! Happy New Year to all our members. Take a look at us in 2013 and join us for an outing or meeting. We have the Pistonheads show, Vulcan Bomber tour and an Indian meal out all planned for January/February, so make sure you attend to find out more details. Well 2012—what a strange year that was, just about every event got cancelled either to the terrible weather or due to lack of numbers. One good point to 2012 was that the South Central Group was joined by some new members: Paul Winter, Charles Tanner, Oliver Bayliss, Jayne Coleman, Jon Anderson, Dean Warrillow, Bob Ford, Gary Howard and Adrian Wilkins. Speaking for the South Central group as a whole, we look forward to seeing you during 2013. Towards the end of the year I announced that I would be standing down as RO at the end of 2012 due to family and work commitments and our December meeting was a get together to look at ways for the SC group to move forward. I would to thank all of those who turned up. It was a good meeting with high spirits and some good ideas for 2013, one idea which everyone their agreed on was for each member to organise their own choice of event, this along with all the other great National events happing this year will make it a good, busy and eventful year. All we need now is the weather to back our plans. Following on from the December meeting and due to the commitment of the SC group I will be staying on as RO for the moment, however if anyone is interested in the role then please let me know.

You also have the opportunity of winning our own regional lotto with all SE Region members going into the hat each month—but you have to be at the meeting to win if your name is drawn out. Club Members Simon Huber has sold his beast of a Martini liveried 935 replica to a collector in France and purchased a more practical Orange 997GT3RS.

Alan Cordery has recently done a photoshoot with his immaculate Carrera CS for Porsche’s prestigious Christophorus magazine which will be published shortly. You may have seen his car at Brooklands on New Year’s Day. Brian Hilliard has upgraded from a 944 Lux to a Cayman. Current 944 owners should be pleased to know that 944 prices are predicted to start increasing in value!

TIPEC SE Region members joined thousands of petrolheads and all marques of cars/eras. We were fortunate to enjoy a dry sunny weather for the first event of the year at Brooklands Motor and Aviation Museum, with a great selection of classic Porsches including a very desirable 924 Carrera GTS in the obligatory Guards Red. Brooklands has expanded its collection and now incorporates a double decker bus museum. Inter-Regional Karting

Christmas dinner Once again we had our annual Christmas dinner and raffle at our club night venue, The Bolney Stage Inn, where 33 members and partners enjoyed a fabulous menu. In addition to the usual raffle prizes we were grateful to Porsche Centre Mid Sussex who generously donated a number of prizes including the much cherished ‘Porsche for a weekend’ again this year, plus a full valet prize. Member James Garrard who runs his own ‘Ovens’n’Stuff’ business also kindly donated a free oven cleaning service. The Porsche for a weekend was won by Liz Greenwood, the valet won by Terry Rockall and the oven cleaning service by Charlotte Bowden. New Year’s Day: Gathering of car clubs at Brooklands Museum

We will have booked our next Inter-Regional Karting tournament which is held annually at the outdoor Campbell circuit at Filching Manor in Jevington, a few miles north of Eastbourne. It is booked for Sunday 14th April. Please advise me if you are interested in entering any individuals or teams. The cost is £40 per person (£160 per team of four) for a two hour endurance race. There is a maximum of 12 teams. We can place individual entries into teams. South East London & North Kent RO Jim Hearnden 01634 869 658 07930 353 232 (mobile) tr7v8@phaetonconsulting.co.uk ARO Paul Greer 07799 412 870 (mobile) prgreer@blueyonder.co.uk Meetings are held first Friday of every month 7:30pm at The Harrow, Maidstone Road, Hadlow TN11 0HP. Tel 01732 850 386 (Google: http://g.co/maps/x7hck) The new location is pretty easy to get to, it is about 15–20 minutes from J4 M20 and has a massive car park as well as being large inside. This one is a couple of miles closer to the motorway so even easier to get to. Partners are more than welcome and it is not all car chat. The venue does great, reasonably priced food so if you do not want to cook, you can have a meal before the meeting starts. More and more members are doing that now. We now have 48 people on the SELNK list and a lot of these Paul & I have never met. It would be great to see some of you in the forthcoming few months. I have two or three members that I don’t have email addresses for. If you have an email address and do not see mails from me, then please send me a mail to tr7v8@phaetonconsulting.co.uk and I’ll add you to the list. That also applies to people in adjacent areas who would like a copy of our calendar. Please also ensure that you update address, car and email details when you renew. November club meeting The TIPEC SELNK Members of the Year award winners have sold their Boxster and bought of, all things, a Morgan! December club meeting Very quiet, probably as we were into the Christmas build up period and the following day was to be the club’ Christmas dinner. Christmas Dinner Great turnout for this with 16 attending for some good food and a disco. The disco had been paid for by the bank who were having there Christmas dinner in the same room. Some of the more energetic ones ended up on the dance floor after eating. Some of us were complaining at the volume leve as it made your ears bleed. But maybe I’m getting old! January Club meeting Great turnout for the beginning of 2013, lots of stories as regards our Christmas exploits.

Southern RO Steve Wagg 0124 337 3159 truefaith.wagg@gmail.com ARO Jim Tarrant 0120 260 1886 jim.tarrant@hotblack944.fsnet.co.uk Meetings are held first Tuesday of every month from 7:30pm at The Angel, 188 Ringwood Rd, Ferndown, Dorset, BH22 9AP The Southern Region monthly meeting held at the Angel, Longham, on the second of October was a lively and interesting evening with eleven members attending. We discussed our events diary for 2013, which is filling out already, although we are waiting for information from some of the organizers to allow us to firm up our arrangements. Final numbers were collated for the Jon Mitchell Garage free car inspection and BBQ arranged for the 20th, from within our own membership, but it was suggested that we would probably gain some more interested parties via the forum as we got closer to the event. I suggested that I would attend the first meeting at the new venue of the Wessex Region on October 18th, with a view to suggest maybe a joint social event to be held during November, our membership on balance thought this a good idea, and would bring a more social feel to our regions activities. The members expressed their approval for the way the committee were steering the region, as we discussed the form that our first social event would take, and as a first for us I suggested that we hold a normal club night on the 4th December, as well as our Christmas Dinner on the 11th, as I was keen to be able to discuss our plans regularly going forward, particularly as most of our active members do not take advantage of visiting the online forum. A decision was made that we would be holding our Christmas Dinner Party at the East Close Hotel, Hinton on the 11th December, sample menu’s, photographs, and costings were distributed and agreed by the membership, thanks to Steve M for his investigations. I attended the Wessex region meeting on the 18th, which coincided with their first meeting to be held at the new venue, The Bucks Head at Meonstoke. Thanks Pete for making me so welcome, I reminded the members of the upcoming JMG Inspection day and BBQ, but unfortunately it was not convenient for most of the assembled members apart from Pete B, who said he would come along. We suggested a joint social evening to be held in November,

possibly skittles, as historically it is a very quiet month, and would hopefully encourage our members out on a Winters evening! I said I would discuss this at our next meeting at the Angel, and come up with some dates. The Jon Mitchell inspection day and BBQ on the 20th went very well, we were very lucky with the weather, and had a good turnout from our members and visitors from Wessex, Kent and from as far North as Heathrow. Sean S also visited the event, and we had a couple of potential member joining us. All in all a very good day. Thanks Jon for hosting this event and sponsoring the BBQ. The monthly meet on the 6th November was a lively affair with 12 members gathering at the Angel. It was good to see Nick and Karey joining us again after a couple of months away, which was associated with Karey’s fall in which she had severely damaged both arms, and indeed was still in plaster! I discussed my meeting with the Wessex members and suggested the Skittles evening to be held on the 22nd November as it was the most convenient night for members. The venue was decided as the Three Legged Cross, Ashley Heath. Steve M had done quite a bit of research into a suitable venue, and this seemed the best bet. Discussions were also held concerning our Christmas Dinner Party to be held in December. Deposits were taken from members attending the skittles night, and I said I would post on the forum concerning this and advise members by email or telephone. Although discussions had taken place between myself and Pete B of Wessex region, the suitability of the 22nd November for the majority of the Wessex region members, became untenable as it seems there was a skittles evening arranged by the PCGB taking place on the 23rd! and the majority of the members were going to attend this, as I had already arranged with our members and indeed the pub had been booked for the 22nd, we decided to go ahead as arranged, and to look at a joint social event with Wessex in the new year. The night of our cheap and cheerful skittles event was almost a washout, with gale force winds and torrential rain forecast. I thought I may be sitting in the Ally on my own, trying to eat 28 portions of something and chips in a basket! I need not have worried because the Southern Region members are a hardy and resilient bunch and 26 folk were there hurling balls down the alley all evening, including our illustrious Chairman, Sean S. It was a good night, lots of fun, excellent venue and value, we will be arranging another event here as it’s a great thing to do on dark winter nights. I think even ‘Captain Haddock’ AKA Andy F enjoyed himself despite the frolics in the lake! Congratulations to Lisa A for being the champion

skittler of the evening. It was also great to see new members Hilary and Ray, we all hope you both enjoyed Southern Region hospitality! December 4th was the evening of our Club night at the Angel. 12 Southern Regioners, three with their partners, attended and discussions took place concerning the plans and format of our BBQ in 2013. I suggested that as the committee is keen to ensure that the members are included in deciding how their standout event of the year is run, I would like to see suggestions from them. We spoke of a January social event, maybe a meal, pursuing our theme of inclusion of partners in non-car based events. It was suggested maybe we will arrange this for the third week in January. I suggested that we could invite the

Wessex group to this , and we should therefore look at somewhere round the Romsey area for a venue, the members of the committee had tried a restaurant some time ago, which was found to be good. A decision on this will be taken at our meeting in January. The committee and members would like to welcome new members Tim A, Nick M, Jonathan D, and Wayne M to the club, and in some cases Porsche ownership, we all hope you will enjoy both in equal measure, and look forward to seeing you all at meetings and events soon. December is also the month when we make our award to the member of the year, and this year our decision was easy as we were able to recognise the efforts of our former RO Nick S and Treasurer and partner Karey, we all thank them and wish them well in the future. December 11th saw the Southern Regioners at their Christmas bash at the East Close Hotel, Hinton near Christchurch. 25 of us had a fab time, good food, great ambiance, and an enthusiastic bunch of members! All contributed to a smashing evening. We would like to thank Sean and Hayley for attending, and a particular thank you to Steve M and Jon Mitchell of JM Garage for sponsoring our auction, which allowed us to raise a substantial amount towards the regions funds plus a very useful contribution to some local charities. We were also very pleased to see

Nick & Karey

Wayne and Sarah M, at this their first ‘TIPEC do’. We hope they enjoyed it, and look forward to seeing them at many others in future. Due to the publication dates of the magazine, this will be the first opportunity for the Southern Region committee to wish all our members, and indeed all members of the club a happy and successful New Year, and look forward to seeing you all at many of our events and club nights during 2013.

Forum: Porsche Models; 924, 944, 968; Snow+944+LSD=Happy Ending??

Be careful though—they swap ends pretty damn quick!

Hairyarse: With snow looming here in the next few days I was curious if I’m better off taking my Beemer to work, which is absolute pants in the snow, or the 944. Now I know everyone says the 944 is pants in the snow too (something I’ve never tried) but having an LSD fitted to mine I didn’t know if that would improve matters much, or at least make it less pants than the Beemer in the snow?

jonjeffryes: Yep, I can second that, full 360 without warning one icy December night a few years back … on a straight road with a smattering of black ice!

Hotblack944: I’ve driven both mine in the snow. I’ve never got stuck, but I did park up and abandon the S2 in a side road once as I was trying to pick my daughter up from her school that had closed early and the school is at the bottom of a dip that I would never have made it out of. Seeing the chaos of a bus slewed across the road and cars stuck everywhere meant the S2 stayed safely in the side road and a walk home in the snow for us.

Tabman: I put winter tyres on mine, which does improve things noticeably—however they do not bend the laws of physics, i.e. wide tyres, low coefficient of friction and 200 hp = not the easiest of drives!

jameso: I prefer N/A cars in the snow. My 2.7 944 was great in the snow. The Turbo (same tyres) I took out for a play in the snow and I got as far as the end of the road and took it back again. Very hard to stay out of the boost and on the road. david924s: I use my S2 all year round as my main car so no real option when it snows but to use it, and have done for nearly five years now, with a 924S for four years before that. Never had the funds for a set of winter tyres so just take it easy and gentle on the throttle and it has managed to cope with whatever the winter throws at it. Only problem I have is the front wings and the plastic trims on the bottom fill with snow and if you dont clear it out when it freezes it pulls the trims off.

R_D_Olivaw: A few years ago I made the mistake of driving my Audi Quattro on snow without winter tyres. I managed to get it off the drive and onto a flat road, at which point it refused to move. I had the embarrassment of having to be pushed back onto my drive by the neighbours who asked “Is it rear or Hairyarse: You’re right, a lot of it is down front wheel drive?” On that day it was no simply to how you drive, not what you drive. wheel drive! My Beemer is still pants in the snow though! JON MITCHELL_q 29/08/2012 14:11 Page 1
