I have had the privilege of writing this column for several years. I like routines so the process is the same for each issue. The deadline date approaches, Tony gives me a nudge, I sit down in my favourite chair and scribble down some notes, then I ask myself the same question: How do we find the time to fit it all in? Haley and I joined the Kent region over the Bank Holiday and took part in the Laon Historique, a moving car show around the streets of this beautiful French medieval town. A fabulous event which is unique, we had a great time and will return. Clive Richardson has summarised the trip in this issue, if you would like to take part next year contact Continental Car Tours. The following weekend was our national event at Hatton Country World. I would like to thank everyone that attended, to see hundreds of Porsches in the meadow was a real joy. The feedback from those attending was very positive, at last we have found a venue that was able to keep all of the family entertained. Shows do not just happen and a big thank you to Clive Gosling and to all the car park marshals who got sunburn parking up line after line of Porsches. It was also nice to see the 924 Club who must have had upwards of 30 cars in their display. They were a welcomed addition and we will invite them to future events. There was also a large contingent from 911UK, who pulled together a great display and had a rather unusual concours competition. Winner of Best in Show was James Kirk and he gets the privilege of displaying his gorgeous Speedster on the Meguiars stand at the Classic Car Show at the NEC in November. July had me visiting Silverstone for the F1, courtesy of Red Bull. I also attended the Classic which is my favourite event of the year. I am not sure what I make of the new look Silverstone, I suspect it will grow on me in time as I get my bearings. There will be a write up from the Classic in the next issue. I will close by thanking Paul Harrison who recently stood down as RO for Bristol. Paul did a great job building a thriving, active region from nothing. Sue Simmons has agreed to pick up the batten, best wishes in your new role. Fingers crossed for an Indian Summer.

Club news

The Northern Big One Mick Charlesworth reports on SYNN’s visit to a Subaru show. Before taking ownership of my Cayman S, I was heavily into Subarus. My last one was a WR1. I also enjoyed the show circuit winning 15 trophies in 2008. One of these trophies was the best in show at the North’s biggest Subaru show, the Northern Big One (NBO).

to join in the stand competitions, but they went with an open mind and not knowing really what to expect. They did cope with all my nerves and bulling and pulled together a well set out stand. We did get lots of visitors to the stand asking about our cars. Object complete I thought. We received a trophy for our efforts, although we did not get into the top five. The clubs that take part spend a lot of time, as much as one year, in their planning for this show as it is well contested in the world of Subaru.

The annual NBO is held at Lightwater Valley theme park during one day in June and all proceeds goes to charity. So far they have raised over £40,000 in the nine years it has been running. Not bad for an afternoon in a field! Over the past three years they have also invited other car clubs to boost the takings. As I have been a fan of this show and all that it stands for, I asked the organisers if I could take the TIPEC SYNN Region along this year. They were only too pleased to accept our offer. I asked the owner of one of these how much for the artwork, guessing at a fiqure of £20,000. He just shook his head and said “Not even close.” Our theme for the stand was an introduction to Porsche and our club world. So we had pictures of the cars through the years and pictures of our clubs own events through the year.

The Stig saves the day? Mick Charlesworth recently came to the rescue of a damsel in distress … I recently came to the rescue of one of my friends’ daughters. They had booked a well known Italian sports car to take her to her prom night after leaving school. This car let them down, so I helped them wipe away the tears and stepped in to take her in style. I have been in ownership of my Cayman S for two years and been a member of SYNN for the same time.

As a Porsche virgin, I finally succumbed to the temptation and purchased my June 2003 996 Turbo in November 2008.

On Thursday 26th May over 120 amazing vehicles set off from London on an eight day 3,000 mile journey across 10 countries all the way to Istanbul closing roads and city centres. From London the route incorporated Paris, Barcelona, Monte Carlo (attending the Monaco F1 race), Milan, Venice, Zagreb, Belgrade and Sofia before crossing the finish line in Istanbul on Wednesday June 1st. The Gumball tour brings its own unique brand of entertainment and festivities to each city, hosting incredible supercar and eco car displays, free music concerts and VIP parties with a line up of stars and cars that is unsurpassed. It all started in Convent Garden on 26 May, attended by SE Region member James Garrard who has kindly provided these photos.

There were over 100 supercars in an incredible line up including Pagani Zondas, Bugatti Veyrons, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Rolls Royces, Bentleys, Aston Martins, Jaguars, Porsches, Morgans and Lotuses, and this year there was also over 20 eco and electric concept cars taking part as Gumball entered a new decade of green motoring! The car voted best in the rally was the amazing Aston Martin One-77. How about that shocking pink 997, along with GT2RSs, GT3RSs, Cayennes, Panameras … and I was very pleasantly surprised to see a 924 entered , especially with a huge entry fee of £25,000 per car (two people), for a full-on week of partying, high jinks and adrenaline fuelled adventure! The fee included hotels each night, food, parties and checkpoints on route. The entry grid is a ‘who’s who’ of the international social scene, where celebrities rub shoulders with Sheikhs, entrepreneurs, oil tycoons, and dot com billionaires, but if the line up of stars doesn’t get your attention then the cars are certain to get you revved up! Participants this year included the legendary David ‘The Hoff’ Hasselhof. Gumball 3000 was created in 1999, when founder Maximillion Cooper invited 50 friends to take part in a 3,000 mile drive and party around Europe. The vision was to create a lifestyle brand that could combine elements of the music, film, fashion and sports industries. Over a decade later, and things have certainly grown, with crowds of over a million people attending the rally in Europe, a televised and online audience that reaches over 60 million in over 100 countries and more than 100,000 fans on Facebook daily following Gumball’s every move!

stratfordshark: Thanks to Sean, Clive and everyone who made the show happen. Thoroughly enjoyed the chilled atmosphere, the warm weather and catching up with Central TIPEC mates (and those from other regions) as current work schedule means I can’t make the regular meets. Good array of trade stands to check out and everyone seemed affected by the friendly atmosphere which is TIPEC’s hallmark. Learnt something useful at the Meguiars demo—I honestly never knew you could use a fast detailer on a dusty car (the guy warned not to use with any hard dirt, mud etc!) or that it would be great for water drop marks which are a pet hate! Cars looked fantastic, every one of them and it was an unusual treat to see so many 924s together. MonsterMatt: I’m sunburnt like a hero, even though it was yesterday! Was a great day, and while parking cars, I estimated about 500 cars turned up, all of which were amazing. My dream cars were there, in the form of 356s, and the flatnose 911 was utterly stunning. Finally thanks to Clive, who not only sorts out the show but keeps his daily driver in such fabulous condition. grbspeedster: Setting superb, easy to get to and from. The field allows easy expansion for more car related vendors if needed. Allows for region get togethers on informal basis. No need for over policing of cars all were very well behaved. For demonstrations maybe a head mic for the exhibitors, we had to improvise on the polishing demo which worked but could have been easier for the presenter. Catering, I only tried the café for coffee and buns. Good coffee, hot and served quickly and with a smile (even with James heckling the staff). Others tried the food at lunch and all were happy with quality and service. The rest of my party toured the shops so

we could get on with important element of walking, looking and chatting about Porsche. My opinion (for what its worth) excellent venue, would go again and would be happy to pay entrance should it help to improve activity on the show ground. It was good to hear the site manager coming over to enquire if all was okay, he looked as though he was keen to ensure all was running smoothly. A great day THANKS! PaulPSB: Thanks to everyone—I had a really good day out. Nice easy run to Hatton and good to catch up with loads of people I see too rarely. Huge thanks to Sean and Clive who shoulder this event every year and to all the marshalls and helpers. garyw: We enjoyed the location and thought it was easy enough to get to from most directions—that and centrally based. The ground was okay—BUT it was dry, had it been wet then I think it would have been a very different day. My wife enjoyed the day and found Hatton park to offer something for almost everyone (they had a sweet shop


after all). I would have imagined that the kids would have had plenty to do there too. I think that worked really well for the club, incurring no additional costs or risks yet providing something exciting for the children. We had something to eat in the top café, the cost was reasonable and the coffee was excellent. I thought the layout was a bit odd with where 911UK was, it was almost like them at the top of the table? As ever the traders situation is going to be hard, more would have been better but fully appreciate the hard work it takes to get them to attend. Overall a great event the club should be proud of, thinking outside of the box as they say … Hatton was a great location, is it repeatable? The weather had its bearing as with any event, but I dread to think of the chaos had it been a wet one. However it wasn’t wet and was a great day. Steveb11: So who did get the shiny car award? entrants who did a great job. It was nice to see so many cars entered. Front Engined was won by Greg with his Red 944. Water Cooled was won by Clive with his Grey 996. Air Cooled was won by James with his Red Speedster. Modern was won by Mike with his Red Cayman. Best in show was won by James Kirk’s Speedster.

There were a few mutterings yesterday, so I will take the opportunity to clarify what we are looking for. We judge purely on cleanliness. We ignore stone chips, kerb dings and the like. It’s pretty much a given that all the cars are shiny which makes judging difficult. We look at the glass, wheels, areas where polish hasn’t been removed and the trim. We then eliminate the cars based on how many cleaning issues we find. The judging was done by myself and David from Meguiars, we look at the cars individually then compare notes.

Mike Holmes: I thought it a great venue, lots to do and see. Bit dissapointed that my car never got a look in at the show and shine. I did my very best to clean it at the show, cleaning all the glass and rubbers, got the old polish out, gave it a scrub, but Sean picked up that I had three flys on my headlights which in his view was not clean enough. I fully understand that, the question is how did they get there? After a lot of research I know what happened. The flies flew into the car while it was parked and stuck on the glass. How was I to know that … Sean Smallman: Kamikaze flies. Specsavers have a sale on, I’d get down there. Thanks for your help on the gate. MCK: Thanks to Sean and Clive for organising a great show, especially Clive on his tips on how to clean a car (an advantage to being parked next to him). RSR

Autotech Paul Bird took the Central region to visit the RSR Autotech workshop back in March and ended up on chef’s duties …

A chance phone call about the Club kickstarted this event. Richard and Liza Squires are the owners of RSR Autotech, a small garage workshop business specialising in Porsche, BMW and VW Audi. Richard rang me to ask a few questions about the club. After a five minute chat I agreed to pop in one morning for a coffee and the crude plans for a morning workshop visit were put together.

Richard & Liza had provided enough bacon and rolls to feed a small army and I had agreed to be chef so that Richard could get on with vehicle inspections and Liza could mingle. I set to with the frying pans and over the next hour everyone was provided with a bacon buttie and more tea and coffee. With full stomachs we all got on with the catching up after a long winter break.

Richard adores the Porsche marque and confesses that it is still his first love.

Initially we agreed to hold our visit at the end of February but a bout of Influenza knocked me off my feet for a fortnight and the whole thing was put back a month! Finally the rearranged date of 26th March came around and I set out early for our now traditional meeting point at Hopwood Services. Adrian Langford’s 928 was already parked up and over the next 15 minutes or so a few more friends showed up so that when we departed we had a fair collection of gleaming Porsches that turned a few heads as we pulled out onto the M42. We only had a short fifteen minute drive to RSR who are situated near to the ‘Morrisons’ island on the A38 in Bromsgrove. There were a few members already on site so we parked up and made a beeline

Richard is OPC trained and started RSR with Liza about 18 months ago. Equally at home under a BMW or VW Audi he adores the Porsche marque and confesses that it is still his first love. Richard has worked on all manner of Porsche cars during and after his OPC days and welcomes any opportunity to talk Porsche with an owner. With his attention to detail and the modest workshop he and Liza believe they can offer a far closer ‘customer/workshop’ relationship than many competitors and a real and credible alternative to the Porsche enthusiast. Both are confirmed petrolheads and involved in off road racing with their Bowler Wildcat, Liza having recently secured a drive with a specialist racing team.


The first car on the lift was Stuart’s Guards Red 997 and we all gathered around to get a glimpse underneath. Actually there is very little to see as the under body covers hide almost everything from sight—but there were a few interesting pointers and much discussion about the virtues of the 997! Graham Kirk’s Boxster was next on the lift and prompted some comment from Richard about the high standards of care and cleanliness underneath the car—a testament to the care lavished by the owner! Robert Teague’s 993 was next up and I noticed was sporting a West Bromwich Albion sticker in the rear window so clearly here was a man with excellent taste beyond his choice of car. Having been looking under the 997 only an hour earlier it was an interesting comparison to note the similarities and subtle changes between the two cars. Steve Jones arrived late in his 928 S4 and had a kickdown issue so his car was put on the lift to see if anything was obviously broken. Unfortunately it wasn’t possible to sort the problem and I know Steve has been struggling since. Hopefully by the time he reads this he’ll be blatting around Staffordshire again.

The last car on the lift was Paul Dunster’s recent 3.2 acquisition and it looks like a more than decent car. Having got rid of his 997 to make the change I have asked him to put an article together for a future edition of All Torque about the retro step back in models as I think it will make interesting reading. Having just read through and enjoyed his ‘Factory Visit and more’ article in issue 87 I intend to badger him about this when I see him next! Back to the visit and with the inspections carried out we were heading rapidly towards our agreed end time of 1pm and folk started to make their goodbyes and head off. A really enjoyable few hours poking around the cars and chatting with friends after what seemed like an eternal winter and many thanks to our hosts on the day for having us over and laying on the food and drink.

Laon Classic 2011


TIPEC’s SEL&NK region sent their petrolheads to northern France for the annual Circuit Historique dans Laon & de L’Aisne en Picardie. Clive Richardson reports.

Laon is a Mediaeval French city located northeast of Paris and was at one time the capital of France. It sits on top of a rock high above the plain of the surrounding countryside with fairly steep and winding access roads. Below it the new town spreads out and encompasses the more modern residential and industrial development. 20+ years ago the town started having a car show which turned into a closed road parade. Their twin town of Winchester was invited and so began the English Invasion and what has become a major three day petrolhead weekend every year, called the ‘Circiut Historique dans Laon & de L’Aisne en Picardie’. When the South East London and North Kent group were considering a ‘foreign’ trip for this year, Laon was suggested and as a couple of us had done the trip before with other clubs and knew the ropes, we decided to give it a go. Booking with the UK sponsor, Continental Car Tours, meant ferry, hotel and event entry were all done for us. All we had to do was get there. Our group of nine cars met at Maidstone services on the Friday morning and drove to the Dover ferry to meet up with about 400 other cars going to the event by this method. A couple of hours on the Autoroute later we were in Laon and at our hotel, a small modern place on the outskirts of the industrial area. Sitting outside on their patio, beer in hand and watching all the classic cars driving past on the towns ring road a few hundred yards away was a great sight, but nothing for what was to come.

On Saturday morning you have to drive into town and sign on, well that’s what they call it, but you just collect your event paperwork and goody bag as you drive through the entry gazebo, then park up in the ramparts grounds and wait for the Saturday road run to start. The run is a 175km route, with a lunch time stop, following a tulip road book. There are three different routes so not too many cars are on each one, but all stopping at the same lunch stop and finishing at the Hippodrome, a horse racing circuit, back in Laon for a glass of Champagne in commemorative glasses to take home. We led our group of Porsches on this run, with only a couple of minor deviations and nine car U-turns when the oblique right turn had been missed. There were some fantastic country roads to drive with the opportunity to open it up and let rip, while a slow tootle through any village had people on the streets waving happily to us. Sunday is the parade day. Cars are parked at strategic areas around the town first thing in the morning and as many people as possible cram into the town hall for the opening ceremony and the champagne toasts. After that it’s time for lunch, in the usual leisurely French style, before the Mayor starts the run at 2:30pm by leading a circuit in a classic open Rolls Royce. Then it’s our turn. From our parking place by the old town walls, looking out across the plains below, we join the other cars on ‘the circuit’. This consists of a 10 mile one way route on closed roads, from the old mediaeval town at the top of the hill, cobbled streets and all, down the winding hill to the lower new town, a route around this then to a very windy hill climb back up

to the medieval city. You, and the 800 other cars involved, can do this as many times as you like until they re-open the roads to the public at 5.30pm. The whole town seems to turn out to watch, and you spend most of the time waving madly to them. Officially you should keep to the speed limit, and on the cobbled streets that’s not a problem, but on some of the open stretches and especially the hill climb back up the hill, if the traffic is clear, then it’s hard not to get a little carried away and a few minor races take place. The golden rule is ‘Don’t have an accident!’ There is a closing ceremony back in the town hall with several speeches and more Champagne before we went to find a restaurant for dinner. The weather had been great all day and the whole atmosphere relaxed and laid back. The thunder of some of the cars (1931 Bugatti 23, 2006 Lamborghini Diablo, for example) echoing around the narrow streets was fantastic. On Monday there is an optional road run of 130kms back in the direction of Calais. Five of our group decided to take on this challenge, which again let us sample the back roads and villages of the area, finally passing through the Somme area and finishing at the very impressive and moving Thiepval Memorial to the war dead of the First World War. From here it was an hour’s run up the Autoroute back to Calais, where we got our only rain of the weekend. So, a fantastic weekend for petrolheads. South East Region Weekend of the Year The South East Region spent their Weekend of the Year 2011 in South Devon on the edge of Dartmoor from 20th–23rd May staying for three nights at The Dartmoor Lodge hotel, Ashburton.

As usual we started our weekend with a gathering at The Little Chef in Fontwell for breakfast and refuelling before starting our convoy west. Upon arriving at our meeting point, I had steam coming out of the engine compartment of the 996 Targa. Fortunately it did not appear to be serious, just coolant dripping from the overflow pipe in the expansion tank on to the exhaust, but something to watch carefully throughout the weekend. This year we had a few new members Chris Cook & Margaret Butler (944), George & Christine Fridlington (Boxster) and their daughter Suzanne Parr (Fiat 500) joining the regular SE Region WotYers, Nick & Jane Barnes (928), Terry & Jackie Rockall (BMW), Michael & Charlotte Bowden (944), Colin Bonner ( Jaguar), John Wallin (924) and Derek & Pauline Flanagan (996 Targa), so we had six Porsches and three others in our convoy. This year we decided to make a return visit to Chesil Motor Company en route. It was a short detour to pick up the spectacular Jurassic Coast road in Dorset, although the sat nav did take us off the A31 and down a narrow track with a grass central marking over the farm hills to reach the coast road near Cogden. Chesil’s owner Peter Bailey and his wife were fantastic hosts providing us with refreshments and some great cars to view in the build process including a 550 Spyder and 908 race car as well as their Classic Speedster range. Chesil have been building the Speedster, which is a replica of the Porsche 356, for over 20 years using a shortened chassis from a donor VW Beetle and glass reinforced plastic (GRP) bodywork. At the rear is a flat four air cooled engine. The cars are available as a complete factory built car or in component kit form for self build projects. We had freedom to browse throughout their workshop and chat with his experienced staff who were very knowledgeable. Bob not only built the cars but was also a skilled model maker producing all the patterns for the castings.

After an interesting hour in the workshop and looking over the numerous Speedsters outside we continued on our journey to our chosen hostelry, The Dartmoor Lodge hotel at Ashburton, Dartmoor, checking into the hotel around 5:00pm with time for a couple of hours relaxation before meeting in the bar for drinks before dinner and some great socialising. Day two started with the usual a la carte breakfast before setting off together on a 60 mile circular tour around Dartmoor, starting with Buckfast Abbey before driving along some very narrow lanes (some even with grass central markings) with high hedges to explore Dartmoor, visiting Dartmeet, Widecombe in the Moor (for a lunch stop), Haytor Tor and finishing at the market town of Bovey Tracey for cream teas. Then back to the bar at the hotel, which is a member of CAMRA, for a few drinks before dinner and a few bottles of wine. On Sunday (day three) after a leisurely three course breakfast we had another circular tour planned firstly heading for Canonteign Falls, the highest waterfall in England. We took a steady 400ft climb from the lily pond to the top called Buzzards View and the fantastic panoramic views over lowland Devon as far as Exeter for a group photo. We then headed along the Teignmouth estuary to the coastal town of Dawlish where we stopped for lunch and a stroll along the promenade which has Brunel’s railway running along the coast. We then travelled down to Dartington near Totnes to the out of town to Dartington Cider Press village but there was no cider, just a shopping village. On Monday (day four) after breakfast we had our obligatory group photo outside the hotel before checking out and departing, a few of us decided to return back along the Jurassic Coast road stopping at Abbotsbury. This year’s Prescott Classic was yet another enjoyable adventure on the hallowed hill, but with the added twist that one of Britain’s most celebrated racing drivers would be on hand to show us how it is done. Sir Stirling Moss had very kindly offered his services to the organisers of the event, Cheltenham and Cleeve Vale Round Table, to make demonstration runs for anyone who would make a £100 donation to the Round Table’s fundraising efforts. As you might imagine, Sir Stirling’s offer was taken up by a number of people, including our own Clive & Jo Gosling in their 996 Turbo. You may have seen some photos in the last issue of All Torque. We must not forget that a couple of other well known drivers had also offered their services, including journalist/driver Mark Hales, who ignited my passion for cars through his writings in Fast Lane magazine back in the, ahem, 1980s. I had the opportunity of a brief chat with him while he toured the paddock looking at all our cars. He’s a bit of a Porsche fan, but was due to drive the Ferrari 250 GTO of Nick Mason (Pink Floyd drummer) in the Mille Miglia a coupe of weeks later. Lucky chap! Anyway, rather than blather on I will leave you to enjoy some fantastic action photos from the hill. The good people of Magic Car Pics (www.magiccarpics.com), who were on hand taking excellent photographs all day (they took over four thousand!), very kindly supplied a selection of their shots for us to enjoy. The eclectic mix of cars is always fascinating, but it’s a run up the hill in your own car that is just so much fun. With the added twist of a damp track after lunch, it became an even greater challenge, but it’s simply one of the best things you can do in your car and such a thrill. Enjoy the photos!

Repeat repair

Martin Whitelaw is becoming an expert on 933 door stay brackets ‌


Having had the pleasure of owning four Porsche 993s, 1994 to 1997 vintage, I must report to having door stay bracket failures on three of them! This common failure is not the door stay itself but the stay bracket that protrudes rearwards from within the ‘A’ post. Quite why most 993s suffer from this ailment is unclear but what I can say is that, by inspection, the almost identical 964 set-up is of a stronger design. Could 993 models be inferior in this area? My latest car also has the highest mileage at 104K, which could partly explain why this failure is the worst I have experienced. With the door removed it was immediately obvious that the front of the N/S ‘A’ post had sustained an 80mm metal fracture—this due to fatigue in the panel caused by bracket movement as a direct result of earlier failure of the internal factory welds (see picture).

This area has internal reinforcement (to which the door stay bracket would have originally been factory welded) and can be awkward to remove neatly with the limited space available.

Photographs also show the ‘quick fix’ repair to my car—this is typical of an external repair weld to the ‘A’ post rear face only. In my case this was a substantial weld but did nothing to rectify the already fractured steel on the normally unseen side!

The following is a very brief description of how I set about effecting a N/S ‘A’ post door stay bracket repair on my 993. I have started from the point that the door has been removed and the wiring harness moved out of the way. Firstly, I cut out a section of ‘A’ post to remove

Unlike previous repairs, where I only had to reinforce the existing bracket in situ and then replace the rearward ‘A’ post skinning (see my earlier All Torque article), the forward fracture together with the ‘quick fix’ welding gave me no option but to completely remove and replace the affected metal work. A genuine Porsche replacement ‘A’ post section was priced at my local OPC at £155 plus VAT—and this I believe may not have included a new door stay bracket. As I only needed a small section of this their offer was declined. Next, it soon became obvious that localised ‘repair sections’ were not available and that I would have to make my own—this to include the original door stay fixing bracket. Also, all welding of the fixing bracket/repair section would have to be completed as a single unit prior to welding the assembly back into the ‘A’ post. The next pictures show my attempt at a repair section (c/w internal support for the door stay bracket) and a trial fitting of this into the ‘A’ post. Clearly seen, I hope, is the internal bracket support and the design of the bracket exiting, as does the original, through the rear skin of the ‘A’ post. This rear

Finally, and after a fair bit of fettling, my repair section was welded in place and the ‘A’ post refinished in body colour—Zenith Blue. Job Done! I’m sure you’ll get the gist of my repair from the brief outline given but please feel free to contact me if you think I can be of further assistance with a repair you might be contemplating. Running Report: Derek Flanagan’s 996 Targa It’s been five years since I last reported on my 996 Targa when it had only 15,776 miles on the clock. It now has 48,000. The car still gives me a smile every time I get behind the wheel and see that evocative view down the bonnet and the rear wing curves in the rear view mirrors. Whilst the Targa offers a chance to see and catch the sun’s rays, or some may say the clouds and rain in the UK, for me the opening tailgate that is unique to the 911 Targa is one of the features that I like best and I don’t know why Porsche haven’t extended this feature across more of the 911 range. It provides accessibility, practicality, and the large glass roof provides a lighter cabin—Porsche interiors can be rather dark especially with black or dark colour finishes. The Targa is an integral part of Porsche history and provides an excellent compromise between open top motoring of a Cabriolet and the tin top Coupe. Up to my retirement in 2009, the Targa was my daily drive to work, but nowadays it get less usage and probably only one drive a week. The daily commute was a short journey of approximately eight miles and that is not good for the engine, so I always ensured that it was serviced regularly by the local OPC (Mid Sussex) and in fact I have it serviced more frequently than recommended in the service manual. I also include oil changes every 5,000 miles even though Porsche recommend longer 12,000 mile service intervals. I felt this helped to compensate for the numerous short journeys. With less frequent usage I did take the precaution of investing in a CTEK 4003 smart charger (who make the Porsche charger but that’s £30 more expensive) at the Classic Car Show last year so that I don’t find myself swearing at a flat battery.


Ticking time bomb or myth? There are many negative publicity reports and scare stories about the M96 series engine failures or more specifically the M96.0x types in the 996 Carrera (and 986 Boxster) models including my Targa, but fortunately I have not experienced these yet and hopefully I will not become one of the 10% who do experience these problems. The cost of a new engine would even make Roman Abramavich tweak. The alleged failures are cylinder liners cracking, failed intermediate shaft bearings (IMS) and Rear Main Seal (RMS) failure. However, my Targa is a Mk2 (or post 2002 facelift model) where Porsche acknowledged this weakness and replaced the suspect double row rear bearings with a larger single row bearing, so I should not be concerned with this potential issue and should not think of it as a ticking time bomb. However, the other reported weakness with this engine is the rear main seal (RMS) which seals the crankshaft, and my car has exhibited an oil dampness in this area for a few years

now. I am assured by Porsche that it is currently okay and I am informed not as important (or expensive) to fix as an IMS leak if routine servicing is adopted and is a £400 fix. In the five years since my last report, I am pleased to say that it has been reliable and apart from the annual services and wear and tear components—I have replaced brake pads and discs, battery, wiper blades and tyres. The only other component that has failed has been one of the air con condensers and a nearside lower suspension bush. In hindsight I wished I had replaced Porsche standard rubber suspension bushes with polybushes (polyurethane) which are constructed and function differently and claim to be wearproof and thus everlasting as well as a lot easier to fit. I am now more aware of the need to keep the area inside the front valance clear of debris and routinely vacuum out the leaves and fine debris that wedges in the lower corners to prevent corrosion of the heat exchanger matrices. Sadly the aftermarket companies don’t make a clip-in set of front grills for my model, so I am now considering the fitting of front grills to eliminate this issue and replicate the solution that Clive Gosling took last year, that is when I am brave enough to remove the front bumper/valance (see AT issue 84, Oct 2010) to make and fit them.

Over the last couple of months since my last report the region has attended the Tatton Park Classic Car Show, taken part in the Weaver Wander Navigation Run and been to Unit 11 in Warrington. The Tatton Park Classic Car Show this year as always was a great show, numbers were down for us with members displaying their cars, but all for genuine reasons, hopefully the August show will attract higher numbers as in previous years. Nevertheless on the Saturday Dave Watson took the 2nd Place Trophy for Best German Sports Car with his 911 Flatnose Turbo and on Sunday Albert Leonard took 3rd Place for Best German Sports Car with his lovely white 944, well done to both of them. Gary Ince had made four sail flags for the region to fly at the shows which really made our club pitch stand out amongst the other car clubs, thanks to Gary for his time and effort for making the flags for us. Gary is currently working on polo shirts for us all to wear at the shows. The Weaver Wander Navigation Run organised by the Crewe and Nantwich Rotary Club in aid of MacMillan Nurses again was an excellent day, those who came along had a great time, and also witnessed for the first time in four years my car out in the rain, and by that I don’t mean drizzle it absolutely sheeted it down for half an hour or so! The Rotary Club raised over £4,500 for the charity this year. Our Club night in June was held at the premises of Unit 11 in Warrington. John, Danny, Roger and Mike kindly offered the region the use of their workshops for the evening to make use of the ramps, diagnostic equipment, the steam cleaner and other specialist tools and equipment. the evening to carry out general maintenance on their cars: oil changes, brake fluid changes and such. When this falls on a Bank Holiday, we meet on the second Monday instead. We’ve been pretty busy over the last couple months attending shows, going on drives, open evenings and the like. However before we get into all that, on behalf of all in our region I would like to welcome back Mr & Mrs Bob McKee after a couple of years away. Bob had a 3.2 Carrera but sold it and so let his club membership run its course. However the thought of being without a 911 was too much to bear and so Bob bought another recently (even more pristine than the earlier one I am told!) and came along to our June meeting, rejoining us that night. Welcome back! I hope you both can join us on some or all of our events for the rest of the year. As mentioned in the last edition of All Torque we had some events in May that took place after we went to print so here is a review of what went on: The annual Jasmine Porscha-Link open evening was held on May 18th and attracted many a Porsche nut from all corners of the region. Jasmine are independent Porsche specialists serving the community with wheels and tyres, parts and servicing. Porsche Club GB were also in attendance as well as a whole host of other Porschephiles and it must be said Brian Goff and his team did an excellent job of looking after us all for the evening. There were two lovely 911s on display inside from either end of the cars history to feast our eyes on. Firstly was a very early 2.0 911S which was a joy to behold. Secondly, and probably as rare was a 997 Sport Classic. It has to be said that grey paintwork does seem to work in the flesh! A view held by all who saw it. Also on hand was an excellent slot racing circuit in which you could have a go against the clock in order

to win a prize. It must be said that although none from our region won the prize they didn’t disgrace themselves with their lap times either! We were well fed and watered and even a couple of members won on the raffle! Outside was a display of around sixty Porsches and everyone spent a good while milling around picking out their favourites. All in all a great evening and thanks once again to Jasmine for having us. We kicked the chippy teas off at one of our favourites, Knott End Chippy. As usual we met at the Dressers and were joined by PCGB’s David Baker and his wife for the drive over to the Fylde Coast. Just like last time the weather had been pouring down all week but I’d booked the good stuff for the Friday and the big man upstairs didn’t disappoint! We had around seven cars for the initial run and then met up with some members from PCGB once at the chippy. As always the fare was first class. It was then off for a slightly disjointed run along the prom as its being redeveloped, stopping for a picture at the Big One before finishing off in Lytham for a sherbert. I know I’ve said this before but if you haven’t been on one of these runs yet give it a go. Everyone seems to really like the easy going pace of them. ARO Richard Sholl writes: The North West region of TIPEC is happy to enjoy a friendly relationship with the Lancashire region of the Ford RS Owners Club. As such, we were invited to attend their recent event at the Anglesey race circuit which would consist of a Concours event and track day interspersed with a round of the XR Challenge. Although Anglesey isn’t just a five minute drive from our corner of the country, it was suggested that a return route encompassing the now fabled ‘Evo’ triangle could be included in the trip. This seemed like a good wheeze and good enough reason to attend. The weather forecast was grim for the 22nd which put a few off, but in fact apart from a fresh on-shore wind and a couple of heavy showers it, err, turned out nice again ... An early start at the muster point off the M6 saw Richard and Diane in their 986S and Debbie and Andy in their 996 C4 following Peter and ‘Radio Operator’ Paul in Pete’s 993 Carrera down to Anglesey. Once onsite they met up with Mike and Sheila in the ‘sunglass special’ orange 964 and Bob and Petra in their 911 (3.2) Carrera. There should be a photo hereabouts showing the five cars lined up on the day—a welcome distraction from the many Fords on display methinks!

At Anglesey Race Circuit with the Ford RS Owners Club

Mid afternoon saw Bob & Petra go their own way, whilst the four remaining cars headed for the triangle. A steady touring gait was maintained, giving drivers and passengers the chance to soak up the beauty of the Welsh countryside whilst ensuring excellent economy on light throttle openings. Peter, of course, had nothing to worry about when he spotted a yellow van with darkened side windows lurking on the side of the road, tucked out of sight. After a final Costa (fortune) coffee at a quaint coffeeshop within a motorway service area the happy tourists went their separate ways having enjoyed the company of fellow Porsche owners and enthusiasts for the day. This sort of day out/drive out is becoming typical of the activities that the NW Region of TIPEC is organizing. We still attend local shows, but believe that a drive out in fine motor cars enjoying the open road and the fellowship of TIPEC members’ company is as good a reason to be a member as any! June This month also got off to a busy start with various members making the trip down to the National Day. We had a couple of members scheduled in to display at the Tatton Park Classic Car show with the Cheshire region. However due to illness were unable to attend and have since passed on their apologies to Steve Taylor, the Cheshire RO.

We saw our busiest club night in June for a good while at the Dressers so thanks to all who came. Let’s keep it up as this is the best way of discussing what you want from your club and what events you would like to attend. To those who haven’t been down yet we have a good laugh and a good mix of people. To those who haven’t been for a while, it would be great to see you again! Another first time event saw us in Bolton town centre on the same weekend as Le Mans. This was held on Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th to celebrate the race as Bolton is twinned with the legendary French town. We had a few cars displayed on the Saturday in the precinct followed by six more on the Sunday. The day started off reasonably dry, however, the weather soon turned on the Sunday and so the streets became pretty empty. I think this was probably the reason other clubs didn’t arrive and so made for a pretty quiet event. There was a gallant effort by the Audi Quattro owners club though so there was a little variety but the displays of people who did turn up were a little spread out. We were also under the impression that there would be a screen showing the race but this was not to be. I’m not sure if we will do this one again but I suppose these things have to start somewhere and hopefully grow. We will have to see. My thanks go out to those who battled in vain.

Chippy run number two saw four cars going out towards Southport, this time after meeting just off the M6 at Standish. A steady drive was had through Eccleston and Croston before heading onto the A585 towards Southport and the meeting point of the car park at the chippy. We were also joined by a couple of our members who live out that way. After a bit of banter on the footpath outside (and also some manic wheel spinning nearby by the local corsa boys proving their manhood!) we got down to the serious business of ordering tea before collecting our fayre and driving off to the seafront car park to indulge. The night was rounded off by a short drive into Formby for a drink in the Grapes. We were tagged on to by an anonymous Boxster and for a while I thought they might see where we were going. I was getting ready to do my best sales pitch for the club but they peeled off. Maybe we will get them on board next time! I think the dodgy weather put a few people off and also work commitments but a nice night was had by those who did attend. This is the reason why we are having one per month so you don’t feel pressured if you can’t make one of them. There will still a few more to come yet so don’t panic if you’ve not been on one yet. We kicked off July, just as the print deadline was looming, with our annual concours and meeting. As usual, a high standard was maintained, and we had a new name on one of the trophies this year which is always good to keep things balanced. Graham Cooke took top spot with a high score in his pristine 911 3.2 CS recreation. There was very little to find fault with. Second place went to another trophy regular (and deservedly so!), Dean Price, with a lovely 2.7 944 Lux. The interior was of particular note. His car also received the RS Owners Club ‘Car of the Day’ trophy. Finally third went to Richard Sholl with his 986 S. It’s good to see some of the modern stuff get a place as it’s not easy against the classics because more points are awarded just for age, so well done Richard! Thanks to Cully & Simon of the RS Club for helping with the judging of the concours and to Simon butterworth of Porsch-Apart for sponsoring the trophies. By the time you read this we will have done a third chippy run over to Banny’s near Colne and then on through Barrowford and Gisburn. We will have more on this next time. Also the door has now closed for Woodvale but there may be a space or two for the German Sports Car Show at Haigh Hall. I believe the Cheshire region may have one or two going as well as the 924 owners club. Give me a call if interested.

I have been Porsche-less for some time now. I don’t see this changing anytime in the near future. Having recently become heavily involved in Triathlon, I’m finding it increasingly difficult to juggle the balance of work, family life and training, and as always something has to give. I’m sure there is someone in the region who would like to take this opportunity to work with Dave in planning a great 2012.

A warm welcome must be extended to Rahat who turned up for his first club night despite being a member of TIPEC for a few years. Rahat expressed surprise at how laid back our club night was. I think he thought it would be all agenda items, motions and minutes. Hopefully we’ll see Rahat at a few more club nights soon.

We had a passing Cayenne driver stop to have a chat whilst we were out in the car park—he’s now joining up! Over the last three years we’ve increased our club numbers from 18 to 43 ... not bad going!

This was the second year members have had a long weekend away, and the venue was brilliant. Our secretary Yvonne, selected an excellent B&B, situated right beside the resevoir. The accommodation, and views, were excellent. Over the weekend we visited the local tourist sights, and had a trip around the lake on the ‘Belle’ ... our Chris Wayman (a train fanatic, and driver) decided to ask the crew if he could have a quick look below deck at a rather special engine ... his ‘enthusiasm’ caused considerable delay to the next passengers!

Our next fixed outing is at Helmingham Hall on Sunday 7th August, for the Classic and Sports Car Show, with 18 members already booked to attend (have a look at www.helmingham.com) ... with a host of other events in the offing during the next three months. Whilst Yvonne and Chris, Ifor and Lesley, Colin and Heather took their Porsches, Geoff and Heather decided to take their very smart Morgan ... it was a good job the weather stayed fine!

June's meeting was a quieter event following the recent bad weather ... we were however, pleased to be able to welcome new member Richard Felton. Shaun

RO and ARO required, to host monthly meetings at a local pub/hotel with support from the members and the committee and to attend/organise local events.

So what's been going on, I hear you ask. Well, May saw us visiting Prescott for what has become a bit of a pilgrimage for the Bristol Region and getting a bit of the spotlight on us at the same time. Pete Mack was lucky enough to have guest of honour Stirling Moss drive his ’78 911 Carrera up the famous hillclimb. Apparently, his palms were a trifle sweaty as the Master explored the car’s performance but all ended well and Pete was once again to take the driving seat without any mishap! The following weekend, we joined other Porsche owners for the Poole annual Quay event, followed by a Saturday visit to Beaulieu to see the Motor Museum. What a nice weekend ... The weather was gorgeous, the hotel perfectly located and we had a lovely meal on Poole Quay on Saturday night. Thanks to Sue for all her hard work, it really was a great time! Next to follow of course was the TIPEC Annual Event at Hatton, and a fair contingent of members trundled up for the event. Sadly, some failed to get their Porsches out of the garage for the day because of the threat of inclement weather (Steve!) and will have to live with the mickey-taking for the remainder of the year ... All agreed that it was a big improvement over Gaydon so well done to the organising team—we’re looking forward to next year already. The day after, Clive and I journeyed up to Bedford Autodrome for a track day. I guess I could class myself as a junior intermediate rather than a novice but I must say that Bedford was a great surprise. Brilliant venue, with a good layout, nice tarmac, nothing to hit and it’s soooo long! No chance of congestion ... I hope that we will get the chance to go there again this year so watch this space if you fancy hitting the track. Coming up, we have a BBQ with the Southern Region on the 7th, the Wilton House Supercars Show on 14th, and a visit to Castle Combe for Porsche racing on the 29th of August. East Midlands have been to quite a few events recently. Unfortunately, they haven’t been graced with my wonderful presence as I’ve been sunning myself in Cyprus, oh and giving my step daughter away in front of 41 other people. Wonderful, and my advice to those thinking of marrying abroad—do it. Okay, so back to the club and the annual event that I missed. Sunday 5th June saw our National Event at Hatton Country Park, Warwickshire. Others will, I’m sure, be reporting on the event in this issue and

as I didn’t go (did I say I was in Cyprus?) will leave it up to them to fill you in with the details and photos. Those who couldn’t go to that went to Autokarna at Woollaton Park, and by the reports I’ve received that too was a very good event. When I returned (from Cyprus), we attended a joint event with Central to Crich Tramway Museum. I know there are some closet tram fans within TIPEC, but unfortunately they couldn’t make it. The museum itself celebrates over 100 years of trams from the early horse-drawn vehicles, through to their demise in the 1960/70s. They house in the region of 70 trams from all over the world along with audio and photographs. Once in the museum, the club was allowed to park within its confines (rather than in the public car park) and there are unlimited tram rides on the vehicles that are out for the day. The sheds house the trams, some still in a state of repair and some quite unusual exhibits from all over the world whereas the museum gallery houses the history of trams including one made in my home town of Loughborough! And it shares its resting place with the Falcon from Brush who made it. Sunday 26th June saw Central’s charity event in aid of Northampton and Warwickshire Air Ambulance, but I’ll let Paul tell you about that.

I was there on the Sunday for a mooch around all and sundry with 20 Porsches on display and a multitude of other exotic vehicles. The weather was kind to us and 13 of our number were invited into the display arena where Paul kindly explained the different models to Joe Public.

It’s been a very busy two months, but very enjoyable! Here goes ... May 2nd (Bank Holiday Monday) Thoresby Hall Classic Car & Bike Show A fantastic turnout and a ‘fun day’ was had by all. May 14th (Saturday) Woburn ‘Porsche Auto Jumble’ A few of us travelled down the night before and stayed at a very nice hostelry. A few drinks, a fine meal and car related ‘boys talk’ ended the night as we had to get up very early for one of the country’s ‘Biggest’ Porsche Auto jumbles! (so the advert said) I don’t think so! We ambled around the field three times to ensure we hadn’t missed anything, and that only took an hour! So what to do now? “Next stop boys: the safari park” We went ‘Ape’.

Another ‘action packed’ tour of the Superb German Eiffel forest. Five cars, 10 couples. Glorious driving roads, and a good few laps of the famous circuit. We hired ‘race’ cars again and had an absolutely awesome time. This year we went on the Grand Prix circuit too, €38 for twenty minutes! What a feeling! A petrolheads heavenly holiday, with wonderful scenery, exotic cars, fantastic food, wine and Glorious weather ... a real treat! June 5th (Sunday) TIPEC Annual Show at Hatton Country world A good turnout from the SYNN region, and a lovely dry day. Nice to meet and chat with fellow enthusiasts. Mick Charlesworth entered his much admired Cayman in ‘best of class’ and polished it to within an inch of its life. Unfortunately he was having lunch when Sean announced his win! So I stepped in to receive his trophy. Well done Mick! June 13th (Monday) Track evening at Cadwell Park, Lincolnshire Run by Javelin Track events. Fantastic weather and another good Porsche turn out with plenty of ‘high speed’ testing! Well worth it! The next one is already booked. June 18th (Saturday) Promotional Car Display day at Costco Sheffield with free gifts, refreshments and a good shopping session. Several members attended with their ‘pride and joy’ and lots of time to chat. Later we went for lunch at ‘Cubanas’ restaurant in central Sheffield, enjoyed a feast of tapas while watching live Salsa entertainment ...

May 14–15th (Saturday–Sunday) Prescott Weekend Another great weekend for those that attended, and a privilege to see Sir Stirling Moss driving the course.

Good call Dean for choosing the venue, and highly recommended, next time we will all have to take part!

Seems like only five minutes since I was doing the last round up but the National Event has come and gone. Hatton seemed well received by pretty much everyone I’ve spoken to and it was great to catch up with a few friends that I hadn’t seen for a long time! Suffice to say it was well organised and went off really well! The week before Hatton we were scheduled to attend the classic car show and VW festival at Ragley Hall. Unfortunately the rain gods were out in force on bank holiday Monday and we arrived at the event to find a few very sorry (and sodden) exhibitors and traders that were packing up for the day at 10am! Half an hour in the horizontal rain and I called it a day and headed off for home. It was after 4pm before the rain finally stopped so not a day to remember. Our visit to Crich Tramway museum with East Midlands region took place on the 19th June but we were well down in numbers because we hadn’t noted it was Fathers Day when the venue offered us the date! Even so I think we had a good laugh and the museum is well worth a visit if you’re in the area. Many thanks to Graham Waller for putting in all the effort to sort everything with Crich.

Air Ambulance. Selling Porsche passenger rides on probably the hottest day of the year proved hard work and several other major events nearby helped to keep visitor numbers down but we raised a bit of cash for a worthy cause so it was worth the trip! Thanks to everyone for coming along and a special mention for Gary Wiln who was kept the only ‘busy’ driver on the day! Lastly we had our annual pilgrimage to Lichfield for Cars in the Park. This is an event Paul Keeling has been organising for the last ten years or so and this year we were blessed with great weather. Always a fun event a bit of sun tops it all off and Sunday was a full house with a great display of cars.

It was great to see Neville Parkin (911 3.2 Sport) at our June meeting. New member Steve Perrin also turned up in his recently purchased Black 996 Targa which looks fantastic. A large group of members enjoyed a relaxing hot bank holiday Monday (30th May) at our monthly meeting venue, The Bolney Stage, who put on a hog roast, Pimms tent and live jazz band. I’ve never seen so many people or cars at the pub with over 1,000 customers and hundreds of cars having a great traditional bank holiday treat. A few members also went to the Santa Pod European Drag racing event on Sunday 29th May with the Brighton & Hove Motor Club who organised another coach trip, fantastic value at £32 including the coach and entry tickets. SE Region WotY This year’s WotY was a great success, this time we stayed at the Dartmoor Lodge in Ashburton, nestling on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park. We also secured a visit to The Chesil Car Factory again. See separate report inside this issue. Gumball 3000 Rally James Garrard took a trip up to rainy Covent Garden on Thursday 26th May to see the start of the 2011 Gumball 3000 Rally, an amazing spectacle with over 120 amazing vehicles and an equally amazing

gathering of celebrities setting off from London on an eight day, 3,000 mile, journey across 10 countries all the way to Istanbul closing roads and city centres. From London the route incorporated Paris, Barcelona, Monte Carlo (attending the Monaco F1 race), Milan, Venice, Zagreb, Belgrade and Sofia before crossing the finish line in Istanbul on Wednesday June 1st. August 7th (Sunday) Show and Shine TIPEC have an invitation to this ‘Porsche Show and Shine’ event to be held at the amazing Arundel Castle and being organised by Robin Pettifer. August 14th (Sunday) Canal boat trip Our canal boat trip is on the Lee and Stort Navigations, starting from Broxbourne which is approximately five miles north of Junction 25 on the M25. There are two boats which take eight and 12 passengers respectively, so we have 20 places. We will follow last year’s procedure and moor up for a picnic lunch which you should bring with you, as we have been finding that the time taken by stopping for a Pub Lunch has seriously eroded our boating time. The cost of the trip is £20 per head, and a booking deposit of £5 is needed when you book. The balance of £15 will be needed by the July club night. These costs are based on a full complement of passengers, and if we have fewer, we will have to collect a little extra. Further details and a location map will be provided nearer the time. Even the weather behaved itself, raining on the way down and on the return journey but bright and sunny during the three days we were there. June In the middle of the three events in three weekends came Hatton Park. Becky & I had an early start for this and together with the Greer family were the only SELNK members there.

weather was pretty good with the drizzle starting as the day ended and people were leaving the site. Nice venue with a great breakfast on the go. The retail establishments benefitted from the Hearndens being there, with Becky going home with a bracelet and a dress. It could have been worse, she had her eyes on a £150 mirror at one point. So it gets the thumbs up from her and given the fantastic mix of cars it gets my approval as well. Unfortunately the weather gods didn’t do too well for Bromley, we have had two hot and sunny ones (09 & 10) and this one was wet. The meeting at Sainsbury’s was a little drizzly, with a longish queue to get into the site, despite it being only 08:00! The event organisation is always a bit flakey especially bearing in mind this is the largest one-day car show in the world. This year they hadn’t sent maps out of the site layout, so groups going in didn’t know where they were going. We just managed to get the gazebo up, kettles and frying pans on the go and it started raining then never really stopped. A real shame as the turnout is fantastic and there were interesting cars there despite the rain. After three years we have got better organised at this and within 30 minutes of arriving we had delicious sausage and bacon sandwiches on the go, even

I was astonished to see that despite the steady drizzle, that at around 12:00 people were coming in and paying, both classics and tin tops. It went very quiet at around two so we upped sticks and packed up. Thanks to all who made the effort, it was a great day despite the weather! Needless to say by the time I got to Chatham the sun was out and it had warmed up, typical British weather. July Unfortunately both Paul & I couldn’t make the June club meeting and according to Sean we had a poor turnout.

Busy times since the last report. The Prescott Classic Open went well! a group of us met on the A40 and enjoyed the quiet, twisty and undulating roads leading to the venue on a beautiful summer morning. With bacon rolls on board, we signed on for our runs up the hill and took on board the drivers briefing. You’ll read elsewhere about Sir Stirling Moss and his demonstration runs up the hill which added to the occasion, but I can’t tell you just how much fun it is to chuck your car up the hill on the limits of adhesion. Over lunch it rained, you see, and the damp track surprised me in the slippery first left bend, and a big lock-up into the second hairpin made slowing down more of a drama than I had expected. However, it all turned out okay and I couldn’t help a little laugh as we powered over the finish line. Next up came the day out at the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone. If you haven’t been it’s

well worth a visit and I have to say the day was unparallelled value for money at just a tenner. In the end we blagged a go on all the activities, trying the kick plate first which simulates a sudden loss of rear adhesion requiring the driver to catch the spin. It went well—success in four out of five goes and the 997 I got to try was very nice. Over to the Panamera demonstration and it was good to be on board with a pro driver while he drifted the thing round the low adhesion track. Fun! Then it was a ride on the offroad track in a Cayenne, which seemed able to scrabble up and down vertical cliff faces without much effort. Impressive. After this it was into a Cayman for a go on the ice hill, which has ‘walls’ of water jets to try and avoid crashing into. Now this is infuriating—the road surface is utterly devoid of grip and I wiped out every time, spinning and sliding all the way to the bottom of the hill. I could spend an afternoon on that hill trying to master it and it still wouldn’t wear out the fun. Then the piece de resistance. Andy Prill brought along the 1974 Le Mans RSR and started the thing up, with the help of new Porsche GB MD Geoff Turrell. To say the sound of that car is magnificent is an understatement. I took some shaky iPhone video so if anyone is interested, let me know and I will post it up somewhere. Then came the Hatton Porsche Show, our club's big summer event in early June. I think it was a great success with lots of members and ethusiasts filling the field, and nice weather, a great selection of our favourite cars and lots of other things to look at in the shopping village and petting farm. I was trying to sell my Targa and had lots of interest, but then I managed to flood the engine and that rather put off a few people. Anyway, big thanks to everyone who helped, particularly Dean, Mike and the other chaps from the SYNN and other regions who gamely pushed the car up and down the access road in the hope I could get

it to fire (obviously I owe them beers). Fortunately a call to the AA solved it in the end, and my lovely car sold a week later to a very happy new owner. Then I bought a 968. It’s great! Its first day out was a run to the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which I haven’t been to for four or five years. The show seems to have grown massively and I could have used another day to see it all. Glad I wore a hat though, it was HOT! And soooo crowded ... So how much of a fluke was it that I bumped into Thames Valley regular Darren Vallace, who started climbing the track bridge to head home at precisely the same time as me. Heck of a coincidence. Great car action as usual though. As I write, I'm feeling very excited about a trip to the Nürburgring with Nick Ramsay in a couple of days and will report back on that next issue. Suffice to say, the prospect of another drive in his awesome GT3 on the Green Hell is almost more than I can bear. I’ve emailed everyone about the trip to the Le Mans Classic next July, and the barbeque in early August in the New Forest. Our next outing to the Silverstone Classic will hopefully be as much fun as the 2010 event and I hope to see a few of you there. But if you haven’t heard from me there’s someting wrong with your email address so please let me know. Have fun in your Porsche this summer.
