Chairman’s Chat I do not know what it has been like for you guys but it has been non stop Porsche activity since we got back from France. The Silverstone Classic is probably my favorite show of the calendar, the mix of static displays, competitive racing and trade stands make for three wonderful days of petrol nirvana. The organisers gave us a huge pitch on the grass, which had several rows of gleaming Porsches for the 65,000 attendees to walk around and chat about. We had so much space we even allowed some PCGB members to join us as their infield plot was a fraction of the size. We plan to make a much bigger show of this next year, more on this in future issues. In August we visited the Southern Region and attended the Poole Quay Porsche evening. This was a very well organised gathering with around 70 Porsches lining the road by the quay. It was quite amusing when a passer by said to his friends “they must be rich in Poole, everyone owns a Porsche”. We also attended the Southern Region Fun Day whilst we were in the area. As in previous years this was a very well attended event and I would like to thank everyone especially Nick and Karey for raising in excess of £1,000 for Julia’s House Hospice. I also had the pleasure of presenting Jim Tarrant with the Drury and Philips Award for member of the year. Jim has done a fabulous job keeping the forum and website running since they were first introduced in late 2007. We attended the Central Region’s drive around the Peak District and PCGB’s Porsche and Polo at Kirklington. I also went along to Curborough to watch the guys in action on the sprint circuit. This has to be one of the best ways to have some track action money can buy, great value and judging by the smiles on the faces cheap at twice the price. On the club front, dates have been set for next year’s annual show and we are looking to host a Saturday night BBQ with a live band. Please put the weekend of 5th–6th June in your new diaries. The AGM will take place on Sunday 18th April at The Heritage Motor Centre. Membership cards are now being produced in-house and have changed from alloy to metallic plastic. This will help Dave turnaround the cards much quicker now that we are not reliant on a supplier. The Central Region are organizing our display at the NEC Classic Car Show, please come along and say hello over the weekend. Please note that members receive £5 off the ticket price when booked in advance, see the advert in this issue for booking details.

Sad loss of a good friend On Sunday 9th August 2009, Keith Strudwick, ARO for Anglia Region, passed away suddenly whilst at his home in Suffolk. Keith’s enthusiasm as A.R.O. over the last year saw the club move to a new monthly meeting place, with excellent member attendance. Our most recent club gathering at the Helmingham Hall Classic and Sports Car Event on Sunday 2nd August 2009 saw Keith in his element, TIPEC shirt on, 944 polished, organising the club stand and welcoming everyone. It was a beautiful day and Keith really enjoyed himself. He would have been so pleased to have welcomed the five prospective new members to our club meeting last night (Tuesday 25th August 2009) Keith, the big man, with a big smile, a true gentleman, and a good friend … we all miss you.

RO of the year We are pleased to announce that the Regional Organiser for 2008 is Paul Harrison from the Bristol Region. Paul has done a tremendous job building the Bristol Region over the last couple of years. Trying to grow a region is a very difficult task, it takes a long while before you see the fruits of your labour. Putting on events knowing only a handful of people are attending can be a little soul destroying. If you stick at it like Paul has, eventually you have more and more people attending and that makes all the effort worthwhile. During 2008 the region increased its membership by 50%, they have a varied diary of events with something for everyone. From the annual pilgrimage to Le Mans to trackdays and treasure hunts to name but a few from a very busy calendar. You will always be assured of a great welcome from the gang who meet at The Fox, Easter Compton on the 1st Tuesday of the month.

Member of the year It gave TIPEC Chairman, Sean Smallman, great pleasure to present Jim Tarrant (Hotblack944) with the Philips & Drury award for Member of the Year at the Southern Fun Day. When we commissioned Jim to build us an online forum, to say we had no experience or clue about what to do would be an understatement. Jim offered his support and works quietly un-noticed behind the scenes keeping the forum and the club’s website running smoothly. He puts in a great deal of effort, and his log-ins on the admin page are very often in the early hours of the morning. On behalf of the Club, thank you for the dedication and time you have given to keeping this service active which has and continues to benefit so many people.

Anglian trackday TIPEC Anglia Region are looking into running a ‘track activity day’ at North Weald Airfield (Essex) on a Sunday in Springtime (March/April) 2010, for up to 25 cars. Before booking it, they need to know how much interest there is and if members from other regions would like to join in. This is not just the normal track day event but has much more emphasis on car handling skills! See www.carlimits.com for more info. The day would include: 1. High speed cornering to assess drivers standards 2. Participants split on to two separate circuits to hone your own skills at your own pace with a few pointers from qualified instructors 3. T ime permitting, a sprint circuit to finish Anglia Region need to know what level of interest there is and roughly how many TIPEC members would like to take part. The cost is around £50 per entrant, (that’s if all 25 places are filled). This is outstanding value and a good insight into your own limits and that of your cars.

Motorsport category photo competition winner Keith Funnell

South East Region photo competition The TIPEC South East Region held a photo competition earlier this year, with winners announced at their July meeting. Here’s the three category winners. Clive Lusted and Alan Cordery were also recognised.

The Bolney Stage pub provides more space for their monthly meetings and is very car club friendly, providing reserved car parking spaces for club members’ Porsches as well as a designated meeting area. Meetings are held second Wednesday of every month and kick off around 8pm. All are welcome.

CTEK Multi XS 3600 Battery Charger (RRP £54.99) Features

The CTEK battery charger may look familiar to some of you, it is the charger that is branded and sold via the Porsche main dealer network. It is very easy to use with either the clamps or by eyelets that can be permanently connected and hooked up to the main unit in seconds. Our cars can drain a battery in as little as two weeks. We’ve all been there when you turn the key and instead of the starter motor spinning all you hear is click, click, click. Ironically, there is always enough power to allow the alarm to start blaring, further adding to the frustration that is involved when having to deal with a flat battery. With winter approaching and garage queens in particular getting little, if any, use this product is an easy to use, low cost solution to the problem.

• Four step, fully automatic switch mode model • Charges lead-acid batteries (Wet, MF, GEL and AGM) from 1.2Ah to 120Ah. • Maintenance pulse charging increases battery life and gives superb performance • Charges even drained batteries • Pulse recovery of slightly sulphated batteries • Three unique charging modes for use on small batteries, large batteries and a special cold mode that is also suitable for AGM batteries. • Low back current drain, low ripple and input voltage independent (220–240V) • High efficiency: 85% • Delivered with two interchangeable connection leads; one with clamps, and one with eyelet terminals • The charger can be left connected for months, ideal for seasonal vehicles • Compact design with mounting holes for permanent assembly • Five year warranty

A Porsche in my life for nearly 60 years Brian Hilliard describes his long history of Porsche ownership My appreciation of interesting but not always good cars started with my father (he has a lot to answer for). Some very good Rovers (they were in pre war years), several interesting Rileys, a Frazer Nash … when we went on holiday it was rare to come home in the same car. During the war it was a Ford 8; my father ran a factory that made shell casings so was allowed a petrol ration. One day the Ford was stolen, when it reappeared it had straw and pigs**t on the back seat. Some poor pig had been stolen for food. The car was returned to exactly the same place it was stolen from. After the war cars were hard to get. We had a new Austin A70, I think it was. When it had its first service chalked on the block, was “unfit for export”. This was followed a succession of Jowetts, Rovers, Zephyrs etc and finally an XK140 followed by an Aston Martin DB2. In the mid ’50s I went to Toronto, Canada and rapidly went through American cars, a Morgan, two six-cylinder Austin Healeys and a Mini used for ice racing. I worked for an American company and got transferred to San Jose, California. Before I left Toronto I had the pleasure of driving a Porsche 356 Coupe and fell in love with it. On our way to San Jose we dropped in to some friends in Los Angeles and I went to the local Porsche dealer and came away with a Speedster and only $40 left to my name. With a 450 mile drive and nowhere to stay in San Jose it was cutting things a bit fine. No money for an apartment as they wanted a month’s rent in advance. But the weather was good and I had a job to go to. We kept the Speedster quite a while, including an 1,800 mile round trip to Vancouver.

From then I owned a string of Porsches, a convertible D to a 356 S90 Coupe, a Carrera 2 Coupe, 911T and 911S. We took the 356 S90 to the Porsche parade at Colorado Springs. This was a five day trip and about a 1,200 mile drive. I had spent almost six months preparing it for concours. 132 cars entered this event and we came 5th but got bumped to 9th. If you and another car had the same judging points, the one with the highest mileage got the place. We had a day on Pikes Peak Hill climb, a track, a rally. One evening there was visit to the Flying W Ranch (food and western show) with over 300 356 Porsches in the car park. People tied various things to radio aerials to help find their cars again. It was a great evening and attended by the Porsche family. The Americans were briefed on how to pronounce Porsche correctly. I belonged to the Porsche Club of America, Golden Gate Region. A very active group. The first 911T in America belonged to the owner of the Porsche dealership in San Jose. I stood looking at it one Friday afternoon with a long weekend coming up. A voice said here are the keys Brian, bring it back on Tuesday. He never got it back, it became mine. It had two triple Solex carbs and I believe some weight in the front bumper to counteract the engine

at the rear. With the short wheelbase, care had to be taken to keep it facing the right direction. The 911S was far better, but I think I liked the Carrera better. A great little car. The 356 was probably the best Porsche that I have driven, it did everything so well. When I moved back to England I had too long a spell without a Porsche, briefly a 911SC Targa then a BMW M5 which got demolished by a boy on the wrong side of the road. A Guards Red 924 came along which I kept for over 10 years. It did many trackdays and fishing trips and it was on the TIPEC stand at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and best 924 at the 25th anniversary of the 924 at Snetterton. This had quite a few mods and was very trouble free. I found it a lot better than the model is given credit for. I currently have an Austin 10 Litchfield and after selling my sailing boat, Landrover and MX5 I started looking for a 944 as I was suffering Porsche withdrawal symptoms. I phoned the SE Region organizer Derek Flanagan who coincidentally was attending the TIPEC ’09 show at Gaydon. Within half an hour he phoned back and said he had found a very clean white 944. It had most of the engine rebuilt, polished and ported, a CMax chip, upgraded front brakes and new clutch and tyres. The owner was desperate to sell as he was emigrating to Australia. I’m getting on a bit now (nearly 80), so think this may see me out. I have started getting it into concours condition and will probably lower the suspension. I’m not going to do a Redgrave, but will just ensure it stays a very clean car. Now, where did I put the axle stands? Writing & photography by Brian Hilliard

25th anniversary of the Porsche 962 Derek Flanagan celebrates the ‘other’ Porsche anniversary in 2009 There were also road legal versions produced, Dauer was the most notable but also Schuppan and Koenig produced versions. We still see the 962 on the tracks at classic car races such as Le Mans Classic, Silverstone Classic and Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Whilst the 40th anniversary of the 917 seems to be one of the Porsche highlights of 2009, amazingly the Porsche 962 is 25 years old this year and yet it still looks awesome. Its top speed of 250 mph with acceleration of 0–60mph in 2.6 seconds is even fast by today’s standards, using 2,650cc and 650bhp engines.

In fact, due to a loophole in the GT regulations the Dauer Porsche 962s, based on the roadgoing Duaer 962, were rebuilt at the Weissach factory for GT class racing right up to 1994.

The 962 was the last of the Le Mans winning Group C cars making its debut at Le Mans in 1984. Le Mans in the ’80s was dominated by Porsche, especially the factory entered cars which withdrew in 1988, but privately entered cars continued into the early ’90s. During its nine year lifespan, wa testament to its reliability and success at Le Mans, Daytona, Sebring etc, the 962 saw numerous changes including both air cooled flat six single turbo and water cooled twin turbo engines, as well as short and long tailed bodies like some of its predecessors the 917 and 956. The long tail, (or longer wheelbase) versions were designed to meet the American IMSA regulations whilst the short wheelbase was preferred in Europe. There were even open top versions racing.

After finishing 2nd at Le Mans in 1985, Derek Bell went on to win two of his five Le Mans wins in the Rothmans sponsored 962C in 1986 and 1987 (with co drivers Hans Stuck and Al Holbert) keeping ahead of the new Jaguar XJR8s which became the first serious rivals to Porsche. Rothmans sponsored the 962 for six years before it changed to the red and yellow colours of Dunlop from 1988. Although Porsche have introduced the double clutch PDK gearbox on the 997s in the past year, did you know that Porsche invented this system 25 years ago and actually fitted it to the 962 from late 1984?

Porsche Centre Glasgow Stewart Gordon on TIPEC’s role at the joint launch night for both the Panamera and the new Glasgow showroom In the middle of August TIPEC Scotland Region were invited By Porsche Centre Glasgow to provide a selection of classic cars for their upcoming event. Never shy to show off their pride and joys, members fell over themselves to help. PCG did however have a specific list of cars they were particularly looking for, so as each car came to me I then had to forward them onto PCG for approval. Sadly they weren’t all accepted, but by three hours before the event we did have 15 of the desired models.

Cayenne Diesel. There was an abundance of wine, champagne, beer and soft drinks along with a never ending supply of canapés. All in all it was a brilliant night. A big thank you to Porsche Glasgow for inviting TIPEC Scotland to bring along some of our members’ cars to show off and for looking after us so well.

We all arrived on the day between two and four o’clock and as soon as the cars arrived the Porsche Centre staff had the cars taken, if needed, for a wash and tyre dressing before they were parked in their respective areas: four in the super clean workshop and the remaining 10 facing the front of the new showroom. Porsche Centre Glasgow were kind enough to lay on taxis to take us to a restaurant for dinner prior to the launch start at 7pm. Time to head back in for the start of the launch, no big fanfares just speeches from Roger Penske and the Sales Director for Porsche Europe then a mention from the dealer Principal of their appreciation for the enthusiasts who kindly donated their cars for the event. There were 750 attendees on the night with 550 Porsches parked up in two massive car parks. They had Roger Penske’s Le Mans Spyder car taking pride of place in the showroom along with three Panameras on display and the new

Swainby Classic

Simon Poole on TIPEC NE’s visit to the Swainby Classic Car Show to meet up with Mike Williamson and his Ferrari. After a while we heard a sound not unlike an F1 car coming down the main road heralding Mike and Andy’s arrival so we were finally able to join the rest of the cars and give the new TIPEC flag its second outing.

After checking out this small show just a few miles outside Middlesborough last year and being made very welcome, Andy and I decided that this year we would have a TIPEC display at Swainby as, despite being only a small village, there was a large number of classic vehicles in attendance with everything from motorbikes to a few old tractors. I arrived first and was told that if we wanted to keep our cars together I would need to wait to one side until the others joined me. Ian arrived in his black Super Sport and we waited for Andy who had gone

still generated plenty of interest and questions from potential Porsche owners. All in all, this is a surprisingly well attended show with quite a few rare cars that are not often seen at other events in the area and well worth a visit.

The show did not disappoint, with the organisers expecting around 500 vehicles on display. Refreshments were available from the village hall and I’m sure the two local pubs did very well for Sunday lunch too! We found a very nice AC Ace parked alongside a very early Mercedes SL and amongst the older cars there was an immaculate Lagonda with leather covering the outside of the door as well as inside. Our cars were probably the youngest on display on the day but Writing & photography by Stewart Gordon (above) and Simon Poole (below)

Help for Heroes Prodrive event How lucky is Robin Pettifer? Very, very lucky. It was back in May, and Rachel (my better half) had been scouting around on Pistonheads motoring forum, and came across in invitation to join an event in aid of Help for Heroes. This is a charity that both of us have done things for in the past so she was automatically drawn to it. Unfortunately it was out of our league as the price was just too expensive. Not one to be deterred Rachel contacted the organiser and asked if we could come along and take photographs and this was agreed. Two days before the event the organiser contacted Rachel to tell her that two people had dropped out having already paid and was she interested in filling one of those places, for an additional donation? Well that was it, we were in. I have to say now that as only one place was on offer, Rachel had very kindly arranged for ME to drive. That is how lucky I am! The event was being organised by/for Major Phil Packer in conjunction with Prodrive: http://snipurl.com/classicdriver You may have heard of Major Phil as he has been doing many things to raise money and awareness for Help for Heroes. He suffered the loss of his legs in combat but this has not stopped him from completing many challenges including the London marathon.

The event ran as follows: • Transport to an open field and tuition by Prodrive drivers on a Prodriveprepared Subaru STI WRX rally car • Timed laps around a coned circuit in the Scooby on your own • A passenger ride with a Prodrive rally driver around the Hannu Mikkola designed Goodwood Forest Rally Stage • Lunch at the Jackie Stewart Pavilion • Tuition by Prodrive drivers in Mercedes around Goodwood motor circuit • Laps around Goodwood motor circuit in various different Aston Martins • Fast laps around Goodwood motor circuit in a DBRS9 driven by Anthony Reid • Champagne and prize giving And so to rally school 101. A powerful car and an open space. The Prodrive instructors are great. They showed us where and when to apply the power, where and when to apply the hand brake, where and when to feather the power. Then handed us the keys and told us to get on with it.

I made a bit of a pig’s ear of my first timed lap around the coned circuit but the second time I thought I had it: a minute and eight seconds. An improvement of about 28 seconds. The pro rally driver passenger experience at the Goodwood rally stage is something that everyone that has a passion for motor sport should try. It was totally awesome. Just how does he miss those trees, that pot hole, that rock? One of the Prodrive management team, Ray Hough, had been speaking with Rachel and asked her why she wasn’t driving? She filled him in and, before walking off he said “Let me see if I can’t do something about that”. He came back and offered both Rachel and Keith Funnell (who had joined us in the picture taking opportunity) a ride with the pro rally driver.

Now to the highlight of the day. A couple of fast laps with the Le Mans driver Anthony Reid. Suit up, climb in and you’re off. WOW. For those of you that have experienced something as quick you will know what I mean. Think back to your first time in something like that. What an adrenalin rush.

It was now lunch time, to be served at the Jackie Stewart Pavilion on the start/finish line at Goodwood motor circuit. Anthony Reid was there as was Major Phil and his family. A great lunch, with previous Le Mans and Formula One races being screened on the two wide screen TVs. Now on to the afternoon session. In the pit lane were five Mercedes cars and lined up behind them were four Aston Martins. One DB9, one Vantage V8 Cabriolet and two Vantage V8 coupes. All for our pleasure. Firstly we were taken out in the Mercedes and shown the ‘racing line’. Where to brake and where to plant it. Anna was my designated Prodrive instructor. She was very good and not pushy at all, very casually pointing out my errors and where to pay particular

attention. Once she thought I was safe enough to be let lose with one of the Astons there was no stopping me. First off the block was the DB9. Wow, I want one! The sheer power, acceleration, noise. I love my Porsche but this was a whole new world. Then the Vantage V8 cabriolet. This was great fun but in my personal opinion, a bit of a posers car, “Hey look at me, I have an Aston Martin” with the roof down. Not so much oomph. Then came the Vantage V8 coupe. Much better. This thing goes. Anna told me after I was out of the car that I had notched up “about 150 down the back straight”. It didn’t feel as quick as the DB9 but hey, Template I’m 024POR185:AI not likely to own either. 28/7/09

For those of you yet to experience it, I really can’t explain except to say it was one of the best things I have ever done. Definitely up there with flying a Harvard T6, hot air balooning and Paragliding. Thank you Anthony Reid. Finally, on to the champagne and prize giving. Out of the 20 participants I really didn’t think I was going to come any where near prize level. And I was right. However, I did come third with my rally lap time of one minute and eight seconds. Not too shabby eh! There is nothing else to say, apart from “Thank you Rachel for the best day’s motoring fun in a long 14:27 time”.Page One 24 life, Live it!

Fortunately our visit to the Classic Car Spectacular at Tatton Park at the end of August was a fine and dry weekend, as always at Tatton. Congratulations to Dave Watson who won 3rd place in the Best Sports Car category on the Sunday, well done.

I don’t know about you but I’m still waiting for the summer heatwave that we should be having this year to arrive.

Our club nights over the past few months have been well attended, in July Dave Watson gave a demonstration on car detailing with various products and techniques, this was just in time for everyone to prepare their cars for the following months club night when we held our annual concours. This year 15 cars entered which has to be one of the largest entries in years. Several other cars attended on the night but did not enter.

Every time I decide to get the car out of the garage and go for a drive it starts raining! Still that’s the downside to owning a show queen, you never want to drive it in the rain—or even if there is a slight chance of it.

Martin Barnett has kindly uploaded the photos from the evening onto the club forum under the Cheshire & Staffs region, so give them a look. Martin has also uploaded the photos from Trentham Gardens earlier in the summer.

We attended a show at Capesthorne Hall in August and it rained so hard for so long that the organisers decided to close the show at 2pm and let everyone go home. Thanks to all the members who braved the day despite the weather, the downside for me was I had only just managed to dry everything out from the weekend before at Cholmondeley Castle.

The winners at the concours evening were: Russ Cameron in third place with his 964 ‘The White Flash’ as it’s known in the region, Nigel Bromwich in second place with his immaculate 997 and myself in first place with my tatty old 944. Thanks to George Price and Geoff Tattum for counting up the scores at the end of the evening.

Meetings are held third Tuesday of every month 8pm at The Whipping Stocks, Stocks Lane, Over Peover, Knutsford, WA16 9EX.

Unit 11 Porsche Specialists are having a Breakfast meet on Saturday 10th Oct from 9am at their premises on Kingsland Grange in Warrington, come along and see the £150k 911 RSR replica they have almost completed first hand. There will be several other traders there on the day: an air-con specialist, a paintless dent removal team, a Porsche breaker, a valeting & detailing company and not forgetting the all important bacon butty van. Our trip to the Morgan Car Company will be going ahead in mid October, the entry fee into the factory and museum is £10. We are currently looking into the possibility of a coach to take everyone down to Malvern, currently the cost per head for the coach is £15—again watch out for the emails going out. Take care everyone and see you all soon.

John’s report September’s meeting was a bit quiet with Eddie, John, Andrew, Ben, Dave & I. Eddie left his 944 at home and came along in his Panther Lima, after his trip around Germany in it. It looked very nice and compact.

Bradford Classic Many thanks to Gren, Jonathan (JJ) & John for coming along to the event on Saturday and Sunday. Unfortunately Ben could not make it as his wife had just given birth. There were lots of different types of cars on display including this year’s Le Mans racing Aston Martin LMP1 and the GinettaZytek that retired with a small engine fire. The highlight of the show was seeing the Le Mans Silk Cut Jaguar XJR-9LM, that won in 1988, driven up and down the public roads with a Police escort on the dual carriageway.

After Dave’s comments in last issue of All Torque, I had to bring the 928 out to the meeting in the rain to shut him up. I also used it for the next two days for work and it rained again. Thankfully Dave volunteered to clean it for me, when I see him next. Dave (Siggy)’s report Ben (Ben944) and I travelled down to Retford to enter the SYNNers yearly concours evening. A warm evening with a good turnout of around 18 cars. Sadly neither Ben nor I won. Nice to see John’s 928, out at a club night and in the rain! Bring it around next time I am cleaning mine and I will do it for you. Welcome to new members Karl Thompson (968), Rahat Hussain (944) and Peter Cross (944 S ventiler). We hope to see you all at a club night soon.

On a personal note before the events of the summer I’d like to thank all who have expressed their kind wishes for my speedy recovery. Hopefully by the time you read this I will be half way there; first op over and one to go. I have had many good wishes from all over the country (and the forum) from all my friends old and new. We may live miles apart but we are all one family—and of course TIPEC Porsche nuts! Well, what a summer! Woodvale was as usual a fantastic show and the weather was hot—yes I did say hot. In fact, quite a few of us got sunburned. To cap it all my beautiful 944 was actually 21 years old on the Saturday of the show and was dressed up accordingly. We may not have had the most cars at the show but we had quality and, for those of us who stayed over, a good night of free entertainment with a couple of rock bands, good food, plenty of booze and a trip down the runway for two of our members which will not be forgotten in a while. Not many people can say they have been down a runway on a deckchair at 75 mph but Harry (my husband) and Barrie Weights can. Oh, how us girls enjoyed taking them on their little trip. Knowsley Show was small and beautifully formed for its first time and I am sure it will grow. Thanks to Dave and Caroline for being stand-in ARO’s and supplying prospective new members with information.

At the beginning of August, we attended the Air Ambulance show in the grounds of Dorman’s Club, Middlesbrough. The show had originally been planned for July, but constant rain had seen the field underwater and forced the organisers to postpone for a couple of weeks. Their efforts definitely paid off with a large number of cars in attendance including a Lamborghini Miura and a very tasty looking Lancia Stratos replica. The Air Ambulance also made a scheduled stop so that no one was in any doubt who would be benefiting from the proceeds. We managed to field seven Porsches (and a Ferrrari) and I would like to thank those members who supported the event including John Oakes who made the trip up from the Yorkshire region and Stephen Taylor for providing his gazebo and lunch from his barbeque (most welcome!) At the end of August a few of us attended the Swainby Classic Car Show. Despite the size of the village, it certainly managed to

attract plenty of nice cars, not just from the immediate area, but also from across the North and Yorkshire, many of which I had not seen at other shows we had attended. It seems that new memberships and renewals are currently taking four weeks or more for info packs and membership cards to arrive. My apologies to those who have been experiencing this problem. The membership has fallen back slightly from its previous high, but the attendance at our meetings has remained steady although I have had comments from some members regarding the location of the meeting being to far East. It only seems like five minutes since I was doing our last write up and here I am again. The year is passing so quickly. The first weekend in July was the now traditional Cars in the Park event at Lichfield, hosted yet again by Paul Keeling. This event has built over the years and is now one of the best classic car shows in the region—and a charity event if you need another reason to come along next year. Loads of stunning vehicles packed into the park yet again and our pitch was overflowing on the Sunday, a great advert for the club and a fun day out with friends. Huge thanks To Paul K for all the effort he puts into this one every year. Club night on the 13th was beset by poor weather but there was the usual turnout of stalwarts to ensure the night was a success. I must admit I admire the determination of many of you to come along even when the weather is foul and I assure you all it is much appreciated. A change of holiday dates meant I headed off to France just ahead of the Silverstone weekend but I understand the event went well and I suspect commentary on the event may lie elsewhere in the magazine. August club night was yet another bad weather evening (our third in a row!) but I had prepared a short music quiz just in case and it was needed. We moved indoors as the rain howled down and passed an hour testing everyone’s music knowledge over a beer. Can’t believe nobody knew the bass player for the Beatles! Arbury Hall on the 23rd was a new event on the calendar so we trotted along to take a look at the new show. The venue was very good but the long break (four years or so) meant it was not a well-attended event by exhibitors or traders and the very sharp

Central Region at Yeatsall Farm, enjoying a ‘drive by’ from a radio controlled King Tiger! wind made it feel quite cool for much of the day. That said we enjoyed a lazy day and the club pitch looked great with a good line up of Porsches and Phil & Sandy’s Ferrari! We closed off the month with a trip to Yeatsall Farm fun day on bank holiday Monday. This is an event with a difference in aid of the Air Ambulance. Classic cars, a traction engine, model tanks and light aircraft flying in and out of the field made it stand out and I suspect we shall have this one in the calendar again next year. A big welcome to Dolly & Kushi Bachada who joined us for their first TIPEC event that culminated in Dolly taking a flight in one of the aircraft—definitely one for next year! At this point I would please ask you all to note that Club night in October will not be held at the Red Lion. Instead I am changing the date and venue for this one occasion as we have a special event lined up: An Evening with Richard Attwood and Classic World Racing The date will be Thursday 22nd October and the venue will be: Classic World Racing Ltd (CWR) Unit 4 Victor Business Park Arthur Street, Redditch B98 8JY www.classicworldracing.co.uk Arrive from 6:45pm for a 7:30pm start. Tea/coffee and biscuits will be available. Our hosts specialise in classic racing car build, restoration, race preparation and support and so there will be some

interesting cars in the workshop for us to look over ahead of the main part of the evening at 7:30pm. The well known motor sport commentator Andrew Wilkins will interview Richard Attwood about his life, racing, and of course the 917 years and Le Mans success. This will conclude with a short question and answer session. There will also be a chance to take a look at some suspension modifications that CWR offer for the 911 that will interest those of you looking for trackday and/or fast road modifications to your car. This will be strictly limited in numbers on a first come basis and you must confirm with me to be on the admission list. This is a rare opportunity to find out what its like to drive a 917 to victory at Le Mans and enjoy anecdotes from a racing legend as well as take a glimpse behind the scenes of a racing workshop. I advise warm clothing as this is a workshop environment after all! Please note you must be prebooked with me for this event otherwise you will not be admitted. 2nd–4th October Friday–Sunday Weekend of the Year (WotY) 13–15th November Friday–Sunday Classic Show at the NEC 28th November Saturday Curry Night 14th December Monday Christmas dinner at the Red Lion

Why not join us for the weekend of the year in Whitby? We’re a friendly bunch of folk who enjoy a passion for Porsche, and of course a pie and a pint. Our Calendar seems to be getting shorter as we close up to autumn, hard to believe the summer’s nearly over (which never arrived as promised by the weather men). Our September regional meeting was an important one as its 50 years since the Monte Carlo Rally stopped at Ye Olde Bell and the management were wanting to recreate a photo from the original event, showing a good selection of Porsches. The event was well advertised locally so we were expecting a good turn out. At 6:00pm it was just beginning to look like the usual crew with around 10 cars making the line up outside the Bell on an overcast evening, but come 6:30 we had over 25 Porsches squeezed onto the front car park. The media was out in force interviewing owners on video, with numerous local papers and professional photographers on hand.

Capesthorne Hall is a picturesque 18th century Jacobean-style house and the immediate courtyard to the property hosted an impressive array of classic MercedesBenz from the Mercedes-Benz Club of Great Britain. We had nine cars on display in total so a reasonable line-up considering that this is a new show for the club. Phil Barton made the shortlist for sports car of the show in his 3.2 black Targa. Well, here we are again at the end of the summer and, I don’t know about you, but it seems as though it has been as wet as ever. We’ve had lots of people perservering and bringing their cars along to monthly meetings despite the weather—well done! So what have we been up to? Well, a few of us visited the Silverstone Classic (not me as I was sunning myself on the Continent) which turned out to be a great weekend. The next big event was the visit to Castle Combe on Bank Holiday Monday in August. A great line-up was in store with Porsches, Ferraris and Aston Martins all competing in their own races and in inter-marque events. We met for food at a local hotel first (and what a great breakfast it was!) then drove on up to the circuit in convoy. Castle Coombe had kindly granted TIPEC half-price entrance so it was good value as well! The weather on the day was kind to us and we enjoyed a great day’s racing. The 968s were impressively dominant in the Porsche Open and the RSR stretched its legs on the Ferraris in the closing race. All in all, a great day and one I shall be aiming to repeat in the future … Looking ahead to the remainder of this year, we are off to Angouleme for the Circuit des Remparts in the middle of September, then we have a trackday at Hullavington on Friday the 16th of October.

I am trying to put together a Sunday drive out with a pub lunch for mid-Oct (probably 18th) then it’s a clear run to the Christmas meal with only the prospect of a visit to the Fleet Air Arm museum in Yeovilton in November to delay us (date to be confirmed). Club nights continue to be well attended, with a few more Porsches venturing out in the good weather. We’ve taken part in a couple of events recently, the first being another open day at Brookspeed International Motorsport in Southampton, our local independent garage. A great day was had with some real exotica on show, including an Aston Martin Zagato, Lamborghini SV, and several Porsches and Ferraris. Thanks to Martin, Mike and the rest of the team at Brookspeed for a great day and a lovely BBQ. We also attended the fun day and BBQ at the True Lovers Knot in Dorset, organised by the Southern area. We were made very welcome and the food was excellent. The weather was great and we all had a good time. Our next event was at the Hampshire Pageant of Motoring at Broadlands, Romsey, which is a great event to attend, with something like 1,500 cars of all types, autojumble, craft tents and an events ring with lots going on. The weather was poor but we managed 20 cars on the TIPEC stand, many thanks to all who attended. I hope you have managed to get your cars clean after all the rain.

On September 22nd, we visited The Wheel Specialist in Fareham, for a demonstration of wheel refurbishment and some refreshments. The latest calendar is now out and should be in your inbox for those with a valid email address. It is in Excel format, if anyone has a problem viewing it you can download a viewer from the Microsoft website. Please advise if you are interested in any events. There are two or three members that I don’t have email addresses for. If you have an email address and do not see mails from me, then please send me an email to tr7v8@phaetonconsulting.co.uk and I’ll add you to the list. That also applies to people in adjacent areas who would like a copy of our calendar. Please also ensure that you update details when you renew. August was quite a busy month. A bit of a surprise at the Crownpoint as we arrived and found the place heaving! We eventually acquired a corner and annexed seats as required. The new manager is very receptive to us and wants us to continue there. Quite a good turnout for the meeting with 15 members and some lively discussion about myriad issues some of which even involved Porsche. Amberley Living Museum This was a very early start, meeting up at 07:30 on a Sunday morning in Kings Hill near West Malling. We had six cars booked but one didn’t make it! The five of us set off on the back roads route to Amberley. Apart from getting stuck for 10–15 miles behind Darby & Joan in a Morris Minor, who were doing around 35–40MPH (and even slower on the corners). The drive down was great with some fantastic roads and very little traffic at this time of the morning. We arrived at around 9:45, drove straight into the site and parked up. Luckily the café opens early in order for the staff to be able to eat, so we were able to sit down to the breakfast of our choice. This place is great, a chalk pit of about 35 acres which has now been restored with various buildings some of which are restorations of old buildings some new. Each building has a theme, a massive one for communications sponsored by BT with phones and vehicles, a lot of which are interactive so you can see how a phone and an exchange work. Others are sponsored by EDF etc. Intertwined into this is a narrow gauge industrial railway and a fleet of classic buses run from a rebuilt bus garage on site, these both providing transport around the site. The smaller buildings contain various trades and arts & crafts, such as woodturning, printing, etc. The weather was fantastic and I understand everyone enjoyed themselves.

Kingswear Castle We had a date in the calendar for the Kingswear Castle which is a 1923 Medway based paddle steamer. They run various themed events, the theme on 29th was ’50s, ’60s & ’70s music. Not sure it if it was the event, the time of the year with people on holiday, or what, but the response for this was poor with only David & Jacquette and Becky, I & our visitors, so six in all. It was a great evening, two guys on guitars playing Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Kinks and Neil Diamond to name a few. This was great evening ending in a Chinese meal in Chatham which finished the evening off. This was great and we’ll certainly do this again next year. September The new manager at the Crownpoint certainly seems to be making the place busier! Lots of people there for a party, some of them interestingly dressed to say the least! We found a corner which the manager had allocated and a great meeting ensued, the last few of us not leaving until gone 11. 2nd October Friday Club Night at the Crownpoint This night is a Scalextric event with the guys and gals from SE region. Let’s have your fastest reflexes and thumbs for this. Last year we were beaten by the SE folks, this year we need to reverse the tables. I supply cars, track etc. There will be trophies for the best racers. All you supply is two pounds and a quick thumb. Please let me know if you are coming as it helps my prep. 6th November Friday Club Night at the Crownpoint We hopefully have Peter Hamber from Bilt-Hamber joining us to give a talk. Bilt-Hamber make car orientated chemicals, everything from polish to derusting products, to another product you spray into the crevices to reduce rusting. This should be a good evening, please try and attend.

Thames Valley RO Craig Moore 07748 733 000 (mobile) craigwmoore@btinternet.com ARO Jason Gibson 07958 459 725 (mobile) jasongibson@blueyonder.co.uk Meetings are held first Tuesday of every month 7:00pm at The Novello, Bath Rd, Littlewick Green, Maidenhead, SL6 3RX. It’s been a busy first two months as RO for the region and I’ve certainly enjoyed myself with all the things to do that have come along. I hope you have too. First, there was the Silverstone Classic. Nick Ramsay, our former RO, and I attended. Me somewhat at the last minute, I admit, but one of my music heroes was performing on stage on Saturday night, so that sealed the deal for me. Carlos Santana was brilliant as usual, with a really varied crowd enjoying the sunny evening and awesome music. Nick’s daughter, Rhiannon, took some great photos of the concert, oh, and the racing of course! A good run down to Poole Quay with new member Brian and his sparkling 911 3.2 Cab was fun too, except for the large deer that was dispatched by a Merc on the way down … And I saw my old 993 Targa there too. Leaving her with her new owner all over again was very painful. Our August region meet at the Novello went very well, with more cars and people than we have seen in a good while. The weather was kind too, with the joy of summer topped off by some spectacular new staff behind the bar! Gina promised

her 911, long in restoration/repair, would debut at September’s meet. Sadly it wasn’t to be, but October could be on. Quite a few regulars were away for September’s meet but the turnout was good nonetheless. It’s great to have some new members along too—if you’re new to the club or region, or have never made a club night before, please do come along and meet your fellow enthusiasts. I think we’ve got a great region going and there’s always a good atmosphere on meeting nights. I am a bit concerned that The Novello has been put up for sale by the owners. I’ll keep a watching brief and hope the new owners will maintain it as a stylish pub. In the meantime, I’ll look around in case we have to move on—any suggestions, drop me a line please. Remember, the quality of burger is paramount! As mentioned in the monthly emails, I’ve added an events list on the region’s page of the club forum. I’m also listing those members who have expressed an interest in attending an event. New events will be added every now and then, with details updating as we go along, so please visit and take a look from time to time—and don’t forget to let me know if you want to attend. The next big event is the NEC Classic Car show in November, there’s a concessionary rate available for TIPEC members. We also have the Pie and Pint night at Sweeney Todds in Reading—date to be arranged in November—I’ll get onto that ASAP. Then, I’m afraid to say we are racing headlong into Christmas and the plan at present is to return to Jagz in Ascot, venue of our excellent night out a couple of years ago. I’m trying to book the second Friday in December (the 11th)

4th December Friday Club Night at the Crownpoint. It is that time again! Normal club night but I may have a fiendish quiz for it … 5th December Saturday Xmas dinner at the Crownpoint Not sure of Menu yet but please let me know if you are going.

Please email me if you would like to attend, and in the meantime I’ll firm up the prices etc., which are likely to be around £40 a head for three courses with an excellent live band followed by disco. I believe there’s overnight accommodation on site too and hopefully we’ll get a preferential rate for a short stagger after the eating, drinking and dancing. I’ll update you by email. Which brings me to the need to update email addresses. I get a few bounced back each time I send one out, so if you haven’t had at least one email from me in the last two months, please let me have your new address so I can keep you in the loop. Finally, October’s meeting date will change to the SECOND TUESDAY—THE 13th— ONLY FOR OCTOBER! There are so many of us away at the beginning of October that at September’s meeting we decided to move it and hopefully that’ll guarantee a good turnout. See you there!
