Well, Beaulieu just keeps getting bigger and better. Another great show has passed and the number of fantastic cars turning up grew yet again. There must have been 1,100 cars there this year. As well as more cars, there were more traders, something we’ve worked hard on. One even came over from Germany. Everyone seemed to have a great day, including David Sayed, who came straight from Heathrow after a long flight from Seattle. I didn’t get time to get around the show and chat to as many of you as I’d have liked but I did catch up with plenty while I was on the club stand. We had a great display of 928s displayed around the ruins of the old abbey. I have a soft spot for the old shark and loved helping the Meguair’s guys pick two out for the best of show. Well done to Vince and Peter, your cars were both excellent. One big plus for this year was to have our friend Tony on the mic all day, he did a great job speaking to owners, traders and enthusiasts. His own enthusiasm for Porsches shines through. Once again, we had the Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice along who ran the raffle. They raised around £700, I had a letter recently thanking us for our support. I must also thank the traders who donated prizes. First prize was a Porsche Experience Day at Silverstone supplied by Porsce Centre Mid Sussex. Other prizes came from Meguair’s, Detail Monkey and Leather-Restoration.co.uk. I must thank everyone that helped out on the day: Sean Smallman who battled though even with a severe bout of man flu, the guys

and girls from Southern region, James Garrard, John Rampton and all those that helped man the stand during the day. Away from Beaulieu, the show season is in full swing with many of you attending some great events with your region. Other than going out for a drive and a picnic with Thames Valley and Hampshire regions, I’ve been a bit quiet on the car front in the last month or so but there are a couple of events I hope to get in before Gibson Jnr arrives at the beginning of August. With the imminent arrival, I have been busy doing DIY at home and the fleet has been put to good use. Both of my 924s have been frequent visitors to my local recycling centre, with the large load area being utilised to the full. On the dry days, the Boxster has been excellent at carrying lots of 2.5m lengths of architrave and skirting board. Who says sports cars are impractical? A recent copy of Classic Cars Magazine, out at the end of June (so that’s probably the August issue) featured six Porsches on the front cover, five of which were TIPEC cars. The shoot was at the Longcross proving ground in Chobham. A great day was had by all, including yours truly who popped along for the day. We came across a couple of disguised McLarens testing on the track (it’s only a couple of miles from the McLaren factory) and we were also trying to get a closer look at some weird Mad Max style cars with fruity V8s blasting in the distance, when some burly Russian security guard ran over to tell us to look away as “These aren’t the cars you are looking for” Apparently it was Ben Collins hooning around on the set of the new Star Wars movie – sadly we have no photos. Porsche are also offering an even lighter edition of the car –the Weissach Edition GT2RS adds a carbon fibre roof, anti-roll bars, axle coupling rods, and magnesium wheels, for a 30kg weight saving. Rorhl described driving the awesome GT2RS as ‘a fingertips exercise’, suggesting that Porsche have managed to make this monster tame enough for mere mortals.

Ian Jones knew that his Pig’s bodywork would need some TLC eventually but it came around a bit sooner than expected, resulting in swiftly sliced Pork! Back in Autumn last year, I dropped The Mad Pig off at my usual Porsche specialist for its yearly service and those little extras to keep ahead of the game! With those little jobs tucked away, everything was going to plan for taking it off the road at the end of 2017 to address some bodywork issues, but after a careful inspection it became apparent that the Pig had a bad case of tin worm and was going to need surgery sooner than expected. With a few phone calls and estimates gathered and the need to sit down and get my breath, a fellow club member whispered ‘I know a man that can …’ ‘Give him a bell he’ll talk you through what needs to be done without any old flannel.’ AT / 124

After a little chat, a plan was hatched that fitted in with a near-impossible time frame of a very busy man indeed. With a date set, the Pig was tucked up for Christmas and then trailered away to Nick Bentley in the New Year without any problems.

Surgery started with the inner and outer sills, B posts/lock pillar, kidney bowls, front wing and lower rear arch repair. Everything was sliced off and all the parts ordered for replacement on both sides, and lots of other little parts were fabricated in house.

With a secondary inspection given, a price confirmed and a deadline to work to, it was time to unwrap the old girl ready to be sliced open to show the horrors within!

With everything prepped and the tin worm eradicated, it was time to fit, fill, prime, seal, paint, polish and buff – job done. Fantastic work, signed sealed and delivered ahead of the planned collection date. I highly recommend Nick Bentley (pig surgeon extraordinaire!)

Nick and his colleague Nigel were not fazed at all, saying she was pretty good for the age and mileage (no garage queen), and she’d be better than new once he’d finished with her.

Surrey & Sussex region chose the Isle of Wight for their Weekend of the Year Bob Stephens reports on the late May tour, a decade after the region’s first visit Being 10 years since the last WotY to the Isle of Wight the time was right for a return. This year’s starting point was our house in Walberton and seven cars made it there. It was good to see Nick & Jane make it for the start, as work commitments often sees them catching up along the way. Andy & Stella turned up in a smart new Boxster, courtesy of a Porsche Mid-Sussex raffle prize. We met up with Derek, Chris & George at Portsmouth ferry terminal, which is undergoing refurbishment and we got separated, much to Colin’s concern. It would not be a WotY without a breakdown but it came as a surprise when we were informed that the ferry had developed a fault! This caused about an hour’s delay, just time for our first casualty, Michael & Charlotte’s 944 with a flat battery. The ferry staff assisted with a jump start but the battery proved terminal and was later replaced on the island. On disembarking we regrouped at Godshill for lunch then set off for a visit to MIL, this had caused some interest as people Googled ‘MIL

IOW’ without much success. It is in fact Chris’s ex-Mother In Law, Joan, who laid on tea and homemade cake! She was highly delighted to have so many wonderful cars visit her, Chris & I would like to thank all those that made Joan’s day, if not year. It was then off to our hotel, Lakeside Park at Wootton Bridge where the hotel had arranged reserved parking. Naturally we repaired to the bar and then dinner in their private dining room. Saturday morning we had arranged a glass blowing demo and museum visit at IOW Glass at Arreton Barns. This is a well known glass specialist and the demo was very informative. Ian & Eirian were able to join us at this stage, so this brought our number up to a full compliment, or so we thought. It was then off for a drive along the Military Road, just about the best road on the island, and on to IOW Pearl for lunch, after which the afternoon was free. We reconvened back at the hotel where we had the surprise arrival of Terry & Jackie who had not booked on the WotY with the lame excuse that they were away celebrating their ruby wedding!

Sunday we were booked at the Steam Railway in Havenstreet, where they were holding their ‘Festival of Transport’, which turned out to be a small car show, plus a falconry display. After a run on the steam train and a look round the museum and car show the afternoon was again free for sightseeing. Chris and I elected to go back to the hotel for a walk along Wootton Creek and out to Woodside Beach with views across the Solent. Sunday morning we took the opportunity for team photos with Michael & Nick making a mad dash to beat the shutter delays on their respective cameras. Derek, George & Chris made their way to Yarmouth for a ferry to Lymington. Some of us went back to Godshill to see the model village which proved to be well worth the trip. The model and gardens are prize winning with great detail in the modelling and the occasional humorous item, including a streaker at the football match! It was then back to the ferry for the return trip, no delays this time. Chris & I would like to thank all those that took part. Here’s to next year, wherever that may be! PAGE / 9


40 YEARS OF SHARKS BROOKLANDS 2017 2017 marks the 40th anniversary of the Porsche 928 and what better way to celebrate than with 150+ sharks on the famous banked circuit at Brooklands? Author Stefanie Mahan / Photography Gareth Aldridge & Stefanie Mahan

This event was organised by PCGB with a large attendance from other clubs including TIPEC and 928OC, as well as sharks from the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany as well as England, Wales and Scotland. Gareth & I arrived in our 928S4 (aka Cassie) and we were the 147th 928 to arrive with more arriving after us ... I’m led to believe there was 154 928s in attendance which was a truly spectacular sight. There were all models of 928 present, from 928 Cup racing cars to a fleet of SEs and one in every colour too! there were 928, 928S, 928S4, GT, GTS, as well as a custom built Arab Sheikh’s car (a sea of tasteful gold and wow was it gold; gold paint, gold wheels, gold interior, even a gold engine!) The sea of sharks invading the three car parks and the grass embankments was mesmerising, though not as much as the vast amount of colours! Even the three Cassis Red 928S4s present were all different and special in their own rights. Yes, you read right; three Cassis Red 928S4s. Anyone who knows me will be able to imagine how super excited I was to have not one but two of Cassie’s sisters in one place. It was educational chatting to Stacey Chandler from Porsche Centre Leeds again about the work carried out on their 2015/6 restoration project by herself and the team. She’s happy to talk about the Classic Porsche range she has worked on in her position at Leeds OPC. Cassie and the restoration project first met and became AT / 124

‘friends’ on our TIPEC stand at Donington Historic this year when Leeds kindly let us have the girls together. I had the pleasure of chatting to Stacey whilst in the passenger seat of the restoration project on the drive round to Cassie at Donnington and you can tell she has a soft spot for the old girl too. Whilst looking around the museum’s amazing displays of many different modes of transport from bikes, early race cars (some of which had set speed records in the early days of motorsport on the legendary Brooklands circuit), modern race cars and all the way through to Concorde. It was also nice to see other Porsches parked up – oh yes, there were a few sneaky 924s, 944s and 911s dotted around too, which gave me ideas for sneaky photos later! We had the pleasure of meeting many fellow 928 owners whilst admiring each other’s beauties from all different parts of the country/Continent and everyone talked so passionately about their cars with so much affection, it made me realise I’m not alone in loving my baby girl the way I do. It was good to catch up with fellow 928 owners that we had recently met on our road trip to Spa Classic too. It was lovely to hear about everyone’s adventures at Spa, including all our drives round both Spa and the Nurburgring circuits. Cassie was introduced to Pinky’s


new friends she had made in Spa, as we had traveled the road trip in our 944 Turbo Silver Rose (aka Pinky). It’s fantastic to hear about the regular use of these trusty old girls and the many miles they do. After lunch all engines (except one) started (some needed gentle persuasion ...) once all were going the smell and sound of 150+ 928s starting was intoxicating. The ozone had a shock too with a plume of 928 fumes arising whilst everyone lined up for a truly amazing photo opportunity. The burble, pops and bangs from such well crafted machines were music to everyone’s ears. With true banksmen in position we were all safely parked up for a spectacular sight for any classic Porsche owner, but in particular the transaxle 928 lover. I was in awe the whole time; the noise was erotic, the sight was one of true beauty with perfect curves from the pure early shape cars through to the menacing looking GTS and all the interesting variants in between. The atmosphere was electric. It was amazing to see and be a part of so many 928 owners getting together even if it was for just a short time. A truly memorable moment Once the photos were concluded a lot headed homewards, whilst we had a further wander round and catch up with friends. I managed to get our The Real 928 ‘Originals’ book signed by the author David Hemmings. It’s very educational and I highly recommend a read. Cassie had another photo or three taken with her sister

from Leeds and new friends alike. We were all looking forward to a sedate drive home playing our usual road trip pastime, ‘eye spy’, so we thought we would see how many sharks we could spot en route home, but we only saw a 944S2 cab … but that was nothing compared to what chased our tail on the M42. I asked Gareth what was coming up Cassie’s rear as it looked amazing – we were then overtaken by a stunning Jaguar XJ220. Gareth was like a five year old on Smarties and we have to get up closer to take a cheeky ‘spotted’ photo. The driver was a gentleman and let Cassie go past for her co-pilot to get a photo, which led to a little cat and mouse playtime. Then Cassie decided that she no longer wanted her gearbox oil and ejected it very disgracefully on the motorway! We limped to safety, but our pit stop for food with friends in Birmingham became a recovery stop and Cassie was chauffeur driven home on the back of a recovery truck. The 928’s 40th anniversary weekend has not only mesmerised me with the amount of sharks still used as they were intended, but Cassie had fun, played with a Jag XJ220 (and caused mischief by disgracing herself) and we are now the proud owners of a second 928. Thank you Jason for giving us the opportunity to join the 928 crew eighteen months ago, we’ve never looked back and love every second in our gorgeous girl. The North West region held its 3rd Annual Longest Day Run* on Sunday 18th June and meandered from Southport to Whitby. The first Longest Day Run was a drive around North Wales, taking in Portmeirion and a cider tasting. Last year we ventured into the Yorkshire Dales and explored Brimham Rocks. This year we decided to do a bit of an ‘epic’, a drive for driving’s sake and one which would be a little bit of an achievement – coast to coast across the North of England. The start point was the Victorian seaside town of Southport on the west coast. Having met on Marine Drive, the coast road that runs right along the Southport sea-front, our drivers were on the road at 8am following route notes that took them along country roads to Bamber Bridge. After a short section of motorway, our cars were back onto ‘A’ and ‘B’ roads through Colne, Earby and Skipton heading for our breakfast venue – The Hopper Lane Hotel – at the drive’s halfway point just outside of Blubberhouses.

With 19 Porsche cars in the car park, The staff at Hopper Lane were delighted to serve hearty breakfasts to all our participants, while several motorists stopped to admire the Porsches lining the roadside. After breakfast and back on the road, the route wound its way towards Harrogate, Killinghall, Ripon, Sharow and Kirkby Mills. A sharp left turn towards Hutton le Hole led the cars up onto the North Yorkshire moors where the views across the sun-soaked landscape illustrated Yorkshire’s rugged beauty to its best advantage. With sea views appearing on the horizon, the cars dropped down from the moors into Whitby and then climbed again to the magnificent remains of Whitby Abbey, perched high above the seaside town.

With priority parking for club cars kindly provided by English Heritage staff on the grassy church car park above the cliffs, daytrippers and holidaymakers enjoyed watching the Porsches pour in, whilst club members enjoyed their picnic lunches in the sunshine or walked into town for traditional fish and chips. By mid afternoon it was time to leave Whitby Abbey. Before heading back into Lancashire, several Porsche Enthusiasts crossed the estuary to visit Whitby’s famous Whale Bone Arch for a quick tourist photograph whilst dodging the traffic wardens! Yes it was a long day, but everyone agreed that driving coast-to-coast from Southport on the West coast to Whitby on the East coast was nighon the perfect TIPEC North West day out!

Colin and Richard would like to thank everyone who came along and got into the spirit of things. It’s the North West members that make the region the success that it is.


URBAN OUTLAW’S UK TOUR

It was May Bank holiday Porsche night at the Ace Café and with Magnus Walker releasing his new book Urban Outlaw: Dirt Don't Slow You Down it was going to be busy to say the least, if his last visit this side of the pond was anything to go by. Hoping to get a signed copy, I convinced the better half to accompany me and we were off, arriving an hour earlier than official start time with fingers crossed that there was still a little room, and there was! We met up with NLH&SE Region, our Chairman Jason Gibson and familiar faces from far and wide! We were parked up in a prime spot, next to Frank Cassidy’s (Porsche Owners UK) 2.8 RSR backdate and Liam Howlett (The Prodigy) with his very own Magnus Walker outlaw car. There were many other outlaws in the house and not all of the air-cooled type. Credit to Magnus, who signed books and photos for over four hours. There were over 200 Porkers, with the likes of a GT3 RS and a 917 parked on the road, it was rammed full that night at the Ace.

With his whistle stop tour coming to an end, it was let out of the bag that his last stop was going to be at Paul Stephens in Essex. After leaving Paris that morning for this quick stop in Essex, he was then off to Le Mans 24hrs the following morning (only a slight detour). The night’s format was a very chilled affair, Magnus chatting to everyone with an excellent Q&A session. The outstanding car of the night was Mick’s 968 Club Sport, which even caught Magnus’s eye! With over 150 registering an interest for the night, plus a few more that turned up on spec, it was a very busy night indeed with great weather. It was also a great insight of what goes into a Paul Stephens retro outlaw. Look out for a write up in Total 911 magazine. Great turnout.

I was sitting opposite TIPEC Bristol Region member Norman Holliday during the regional Christmas lunch raffle when he won the voucher for a Porsche Driving Experience at the Silverstone Porsche Experience Centre, so I know just how pleased he was to get that prize. Kindly donated by our local Bristol OPC, his win entitled him to a choice from the driving experiences available at the PEC comprising Boxster, Cayman, 911, Panamera, Cayenne or Macan. Although some people might choose a different model to the one that they own, Norman selected the Cayman precisely because it was his model and he felt that it would be interesting and more rewarding to put a Porsche with which he was familiar through the various situations to be found at the Centre. AT / 124

The Experience was scheduled to last for 90 minutes but Norman felt that his driving time comfortably exceeded that, even allowing for coffee, lunch and afternoon tea, all of which were included and to a very high standard. It is important to emphasise that these courses take place on a one-to-one basis and so after an initial chat with his instructor it was off to collect his chosen car, a yellow Cayman S which was not too dissimilar to Norman’s own Cayman R. With laps of two circuits, the Kick Plate and the Ice Hill there were a wide variety of conditions not just to experience but to attempt to master and having someone alongside to coach his technique in all areas certainly made a difference and allowed for a steeper learning curve.

While this was useful to gradually improve the way in which he was able to tackle the straightforward circuit driving, the special features available also allowed Norman to hone his skills in difficult conditions while in a controlled environment. The Ice Hill uses computer-controlled water jets on a slightly sloping low friction surface to duplicate the slippery conditions which can sometimes be found on winter roads, while the Kick Plate does the same by causing the rear of the car to loose grip suddenly. Both of these situations occur rarely for most drivers but being able to learn how to counteract them in complete safety was something he felt to be an invaluable asset to anyone’s driving skills.

As well as all of the varied driving experiences and the excellent restaurant the Centre also offers a well-stocked Porsche shop and a small collection of particularly interesting racing Porsches. Those accompanying the participant can witness the action from the upper part of the building and the fact that Norman came away feeling that the day would have been worth paying for is surely the ultimate recommendation.

Although I attend Simply Porsche at Beaulieu every year I still find it to be one of the most enjoyable events in the Porsche calendar – but then we have always been very lucky with the weather! For me its strengths are not only the huge number and variety of our favourite make but also a great venue with decent facilities and many things to enjoy over and above the cars themselves. The latter is an important feature for an event like this, not just for the benefit of partners and children but as a refresher for enthusiasts temporarily suffering car overload. Despite its location being less than ideal for those further north, Beaulieu is within reach of a huge number of members and potential members and the picturesque area also makes it ideal for a weekend away. The marshals always have their work cut out in dealing with the massive influx of cars during the initial 90 minutes or so and cope with this remarkably well. Routing arrivals via a parking area where owners can wait and group if necessary is a simple but effective way of dealing with those wishing to park together and particularly useful in view of the appalling local phone signal. Once past the payment point parking is swift and efficient, although the sheer volume of cars makes any model grouping very difficult. However, just watching the cars streaming down the tree-lined avenue bumper to bumper provides a Porsche pageant rarely seen elsewhere. Given this year is the 928’s 40th anniversary it was a little surprising that they were not parked more prominently, but that may have been a Beaulieu decision rather than ours. There were certainly a good number of them present and walking around the site year on year it is interesting to see how the popularity of certain models changes, as does the condition of those present. For instance, 944s were once seen widely but often in less than good condition whereas now they are less common but usually very good, many of the marginal cars having come to the end of their lives. You can see something similar happening to early Boxsters too, with many 986 models falling by the wayside due to the maintenance/repair costs versus car value versus ease of replacement equation. With over 1,000 cars attending – a big jump from the 800+ of the previous year – there was a great cross-section of the Porsche range from the 356 up to the newest cars. The fact that the cars are parked much in the order in which they arrive makes wandering around the site a constant voyage of discovery with almost every car different in some way to the next, sometimes dramatically so in the case of modified vehicles. It was good to see a variety of pre-impact bumper 911s present and 914s were out in reasonable numbers too, although 968s and 924s were surprisingly thin on the ground. The various modified 911s provided a good contrast to the many standard cars, although a bit of information as to the base vehicle and what has been done would be useful as it is often difficult to even work out what the car started out as being. While wandering around I always enjoy coming across cars in unusual factory colours and there were some rare combinations to be found, sometimes in conjunction with uncommon interior shades too. I would prefer to see 356 replicas displayed separately – difficult, I know, but not impossible – but the rearrangement of the overflow parking worked well. Seeing so many cars together can serve to highlight particular models and I was again prompted to think of the Cayman as being the best-kept Porsche secret of modern times. The Peoples’ Choice Award was won by the 2013 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet of Steve & Kate Hough, leaving Norman & Jackie Holliday as runners-up for the second consecutive year with their 2011 Cayman R along with the 1960 356B Super 90 of James Peel and the amazing 1996 911 GT1 displayed by Universal Classic Cars. The latter was certainly the rarest car on site and was driven the short distance from where it was parked to the finalists display, allowing it to be heard as well as seen. In fact, its appearance could not have been more appropriate as the issue of All Torque being distributed on the day included the history of this fascinating model. All in all it was another great day and I shall happily attend once again next year. I have a feeling that many others are looking forward to doing the same. PAGE / 19

Well it’s the start of the classic race season and this can only mean one thing ... Cheshire & Staffs region are off on their annual road trip. As the Le Mans Classic event is held every two years, the consensus for 2017 was to attend the Spa Classic (19th–21st May). David Watson (RO) put his planner cap on and set about organising what was to be another fantastic adventure from start to finish. Everyone was raring to get to port on Wednesday and thankfully this year everyone arrived on time and with no mishaps, so we all happily set sail heading to Dunkirk. Once docked onto foreign soil, we regrouped and headed for the Le Domaine du Haut Vent Hotel in Belgium. Our convoy of nine Porsches enjoyed a scenic drive through France and Belgium. This could have quickly changed had it have not been for swift communication over the radios about a reversing truck on the Autoroute. There were some choice words reserved for this driver as his truck reversed towards us – we can only presume he missed his junction! The weather was glorious making the drive even more beautiful. Once parked up at the quaint hotel, the Belgian bier began to flow.

I even tried the Belgian ladies’ bier (think this is a myth!). Our group of 17 cleared the bar of over 70 bottles. Each drop was enjoyed and welldeserved after a fab days driving. Thursday saw another scenic drive though this time through the German countryside to the Nurburgring. On arrival we all stopped for a photo opportunity (it's got to be done!) where we were joined by a local 991 too. It is not everyday you see 10 different Porsches under the Nurburgring sign. While we were there, we had to have a wander around the museum and Ring-Werks. There was a variety of things to see, from wax figures of racing drivers, a 4D cinema experience, F1 cars that you could sit in (they are rather snug), and

then there was the pit challenge. This was great fun and an excellent team experience. Chris, Ian and Gareth were the quickest team to change an F1 tyre. I sent one rolling off around the museum, oops! There was also a simulator experience from behind the wheel of a ’Ring bus. Our ‘bus driver’ gave us all a very different experience of the track ... it was brilliant to see the Nurburgring from an offroading perspective! Our youngest club member had booked three track laps with Apex Car Hire at the Nurburgring and impressed in his track-prepared VW Polo. Other members of the group decided to brave the track in our own cars and have a drive of the infamous Green Hell too. So with Tom & Pete in Tom’s 911, Barry PAGE / 21


& Trevor in Barry’s 964, John B & Gary in John’s 911 and Gareth & I in Gareth’s 944 Turbo Silver Rose, it was all a big adventure given most of us were Nurburgring virgins. Wow, that’s all I can say. It was fantastic sitting as a passenger on the Nurburgring; and it was refreshing to be able to enjoy Gareth’s 944 Turbo being pushed to the limit in an unrestricted environment. From the passenger seat, I was able to see a whizzing glimpse of the beautiful backdrop of the track. You could feel how the infamous Carousel pushes you out, with plenty of other tricky bends like Swallow Tail ready to catch you out when you don’t know the track! Some of the straights were brilliant. It was a real opportunity to stretch the cars legs. Craig Pye kindly took John, Trevor and myself round for a passenger lap in the VW Polo. This little beauty was nippy and driven exceptionally well by such a novice. Watch out for when he gets his 924 insured! Everyone enjoyed the experience. So much so that some of us went round for a second lap. Dinner was very much needed after such a memorable day. A decision AT / 124

was made to take a short drive to the Restaurant Pistenklause. We managed to get a table for 17 at this well-known hotel/venue, which is Sabine Schmitz’s family restaurant. We enjoyed a lovely meal in surroundings steeped in Nurburgring history, then we had a sedate evening drive back to Belgium. The following day, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, everyone washed the residue from the last few days off their cars and we headed to the Spa Francorchamps circuit for the start of the Spa Classic weekend and more track fun. Over the next three days everyone thoroughly enjoyed seeing many classic road and racing cars, on the various club stands, in the free-to-access pits, as well as in action around the circuit. Bonham’s auction house also had an array of amazing beauties to admire before being sold to the highest bidders on the Sunday. It was not only interesting listening to our friends talk about these cars with such passion, but obvious that we had a wealth of knowledge on tap from various knowledgeable club members. The 944 and the 928 in the auction were prominent topics of conversation that afternoon.

During the weekend it was lovely to meet other fellow club members. We spoke with members from both Kent and Scotland, and got chatting to a Spanish couple who were admiring the 944 Turbo on our club display. It transpired that they had only recently sold their beloved 951 Silver Rose that they had had from new to become proud owners of a 996 Turbo.

The racing was spectacular to watch too, with many irreplaceable classic racecars driven with verve. Though it was sad to see the Scirocco that we had just been admiring in the pits come back on a recovery truck with his front end out of shape, closely followed by a BMW Batmobile on the back of another truck. The two had become intimate on track, not a pretty sight.

Over the three days all our members on the road trip bought track laps in their cars to experience the Spa circuit. The weather was a bit mixed over the two days with some experiencing a wet track whilst others had the pleasure of dry laps. The wet laps saw a few hairy moments with a spectacular amount of spray thrown up. A Peugeot 205 spun out on a corner and narrowly avoided being collected by a BMW and our 944 Turbo. Thankfully there were no mishaps!

There was a fantastic array of things to see and do with full access to all areas. There were various forms of entertainment around the circuit with brass bands, singers, circus acts and much more. The sights and sounds in the pits were another story. The smell of intoxicating fumes and various engines popping and burbling was electric. The drivers of these amazing machines were also friendly and happy to chat about their cars and experiences with us.

In the dry, John’s 996 was having a good old play with a Ferrari race car – and giving it some grief too! Dave’s 930 Flatnose had the boost turned up and blew many cobwebs away. Just like a few days beforehand at the Ring, everyone had a brilliant time stretching their car’s legs on track.

We all had a fun time with friends on and off track. Classic racing, bier and food, and despite the mixed weather in Belgium, a perfect Weekend of the Year. I would like to thank David Watson for his excellent planning skills, having organised another fantastic road trip. Roll on Le Mans Classic next year.

In a story that began as early as 1950 with the Glockler Special, Porsche engines have found themselves in quite a few non-Porsche cars over the years and there have also been a number of road and racing cars based on Porsche models. However, in 1994 there appeared one of the few – perhaps only – Porsches based on another make. It was a fast, sleek animal and a powerful hunter of prizes; in fact just like the motoring equivalent of a jaguar … In 1991 Jaguar introduced their XJR14 as a contender for the newly-reconstituted FIA World Sportscar Championship. The car was designed by Ross Brawn, built as usual by TWR (Tom Walkinshaw Racing) and used a 3.5 litre Ford HB V8 F1 engine. It duly secured the championship, but at the end of the year the company withdrew from the WSC and turned their attention to racing the cars in America in the IMSA series, where they had rather less success. A number of these cars were also built in 1992 for Mazda as the Juddengined MXR-01 – but, you ask, what has all this to do with Porsche? In 1994 US company Andial, who had a close relationship with Porsche due to their work on Porsche Group C racing cars Stateside, contacted the works with the revolutionary proposal that one of the Jaguar XJR14’s, now with TWR at the end of their American competition life, could effectively be converted into a Porsche. The thinking behind this was that in the absence of any Porsche with a chance of victory in the 1995 Daytona and Sebring endurance races this scheme would allow the company to be represented reasonably easily. Andial also thought that this project could be realised at relatively little cost and perhaps surprisingly the factory agreed to the proposal and so received the donor from TWR that September. The carbon fibre monocoque and the suspension were still suitable for their intended purpose and aside from the modifications required to take the chosen Porsche engine – a trusty 935-derived 3.0 litre flat six – the bodywork was extensively modified, not least in the conversion to open form by the removal of the coupé roof. The ‘new’ Porsche was tested in America and found to be aerodynamically wanting and much slower than expected, but in spite of this the American organisers – not for the first time – decided to penalise Porsche with weight and AT / 124

induction restrictions. As these were imposed early in 1995, less than two weeks before Daytona qualifying, the decision was taken to withdraw from this race and ultimately from Sebring too. An alternative plan was then hatched to run the cars – a second having been constructed using a new tub – at Le Mans using 962-type engines, but financial constraints imposed by Porsche on their racing department prevented this. The developed cars thus languished during 1995 but early the following year longstanding Porsche driver and entrant Reinhold Joest approached the factory with a proposal that Joest Racing run them at Le Mans. Although already aiming for a win there with their new 911 GT1, the works saw the sense in doubling their chances of victory and so a deal was struck to let him run the WSC95’s – as they were now known – and after a few days in the wind tunnel to overcome their remaining shortcomings they were ready to race. Qualifying first and seventh they proved to be fast and generally reliable and while one eventually retired just over 50 laps from the finish the other won convincingly, the 911 GT1s following it home. As Joest now owned the winning car – the agreement had been that he could keep it if he won! – he returned to the event with it again the following year and repeated his triumph, something the same car has done at Le Mans on only a handful of occasions. In fact, this time he actually saved the day for the company as both of their 911 GT1s retired. With the cars renamed LMP1 98 in acknowledgment of the many changes made to them they returned to the race yet again in 1998, although by this time the factory felt that they were at the end of their development cycle. This proved to be the case, with the joint Porsche/Joest entries respectively lasting less than one and two-thirds distance, although since the 911 GT1s scored a one–two, the company was still happy. Although based on a car from a rival manufacturer and never raced where they were intended to compete these cars scored some notable highprofile successes for Porsche and also won a two hour race at Donington in 1997. Given that the design was five years old even before it raced for Porsche and yet still won twice at Le Mans this model should certainly not be overlooked, even given its rather mixed parentage!

After a hearty breakfast we headed out for the second leg of the journey which took in some very Porsche friendly North Yorkshire roads. A couple of hours were spent taking in the sights and eating Fish & Chips and ice cream before making our way home.

Unfortunately for me it’s been a very busy time of year with work. It’s not stopping me from visiting car shows and events but due to the 944’s engine fire and a mid-summer MOT (how did that happen) I’ve been having to resort to using my ’71 camper van. It’s still from the Porsche family. However the guys have had the cars out to several events and we still have a lot to come. Hopefully some of you will have joined me and my 924 Turbo at the CSCC classic sports car meeting at Croft on 22nd–23rd July. Have a look on YouTube at the championship and see if it’s your sort of thing for future events.

At time of writing this I’m particularly looking forward to the trackday event on 27th July, also at Croft. John will be taking the 924S racecar out for the first time having successfully tested at the Auto Dome earlier in the month. He’s been building the car for about six years, just going to show you have to hang on to your dreams and keep plugging away at them. Our beloved RO will also be taking to the circuit in his blisteringly fast Evo. Mike is back from his travels to Wolfsburg after seeing some of Ferdinand’s early work and is itching to take to the track. With the summer in full swing the club has been hitting the village green car shows and seeing the usual smattering of Porsches (and hopefully some new members). Mike has been flying the flag for the club on an international level with his club activities in the past month. We are now the proud owner of a Porsche main dealer on Teesside – watch this space for a club visit to this new purpose-built dealership. Darren King at Unique Porsche Specialists in Westhoughton held a successful open morning on 7th May. With 50 cars in attendance, plenty of sunshine and 11 TIPEC ‘faces’ the morning was a roaring success.

Our first meeting at The Bowling Green

The Bowling Green pub in Charnock Richard was our Friday Feast destination on 19th May. We used the event as a test for the pub because it had been suggested as a new regular meeting venue by club regular, Jo Diamond. With 20 attendees giving the room, food and car park a positive review, the decision was made to make The Bowling Green our new regular venue. It was nice also to welcome new members George & Yolly Pollard into the fold. We had a convoy of 20 Porsches for our run down to Llandudno on 21st May for Porsches on the Prom. Now a huge event, my understanding is that it attracted around 580 Porsche cars this year. By mid-afternoon several of us had left Llandudno for a scenic drive through North Wales, taking in the delights of the Evo triangle en-route. Over the weekend of the 4–5th of July we joined forces with both Cheshire & Staffs and Cumbria regions for the Tatton Park Classic Car Show in Knutsford. With eclectic displays on both days the club won an award on Saturday for its efforts. Our annual ‘Long Run on the Longest Day’ happened on 18th June. This year we went coast-to-coast from Southport to Whitby with an early start, a mid-way breakfast stop, priority parking at Whitby Abbey, an ice-cream eating PAGE / 29


dog called Peanut, and sunburn. This event was always going to be about doing a drive that you ‘wouldn’t normally do’ and through the day we had some 18 Porsche cars enjoying the sunshine, the countryside and club camaraderie. By the time you read this we will have had a Friday Curry Night, another Unique Porsche Sunday and our Annual Nurburgring trip. Read about that next time. We had a mix of weather though that definitely didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the group, and all seemed to enjoy a proper road trip. Gareth & Stefanie joined a handful of others at the 928 40th Anniversary celebrations at Brooklands. Amazing to see 156 Porsche 928s on the banking. In early June, we combined forces with the North West Region to put on our best stand yet at the Tatton Park Classic & Sportscar Show. We had 27 Porsches on the Saturday and 31 cars on the stand Sunday. The amazing variety resulted in a First Place Highly Commended Club Stand trophy. I was particularly pleased with our own 928 tribute with no fewer than nine 928s on display from Gareth’s early S barn find to a rare manual 928 GTS. Stefanie then organized our region’s attendance at the Trentham Gardens show which turned out to be an exceptionally warm day. It brought out a good crowd and we had around 10 cars on the stand. The heat was obviously too much for some! Our June Club night was held mainly in the car park of the pub. Phil Harrop of DeVille Detailing

offered a very interesting demonstration of the differences between washing your car and detailing your car. The transformation on a member’s 911 was very compelling. I would like to thank Phil (www.devilledetailing.co.uk) for stepping in at the 11th hour to cover for another firm who we had originally hoped would attend. There are now at least 10 928s in our group. Having had contact with Dan Furr of Ultimate Porsche Magazine, we rallied seven of them for Dan’s magazine stand at the Fast Car Festival at Donington. Some 13 928s were exhibiting, including the All Torque cover car of Vince Dallimore featured in issue 123. In keeping with 928 reputation, three cars required a pitstop on the return leg … As you read this our annual Pride of Ownership competition will have been held at the July meeting. This is always a crowd puller. Fingers crossed for the weather. Finally, I would like to sign off by saying a big thank you to Gareth Aldridge & Stefanie Mahan (AROs) who have supported me in recent years. I am stepping down as RO at the end of July due to work pressures and personal commitments. Each month kicks off for us with Colmworth Cars. It’s a great way to spend a Sunday morning with around 50 cars from all eras and a great chance for a bacon roll and a chat.

928s at Donington

In May we visited Porsche Centre Cambridge where we drooled over new cars and restored projects and had an opportunity to put our cars up on the ramp. A big thank you to the team for their hospitality, especially James who showed us the 911 engine he has been painstakingly restoring. We have started a regular trip to the Super Sausage Café near Silverstone. The food is tremendous and there is always lots to see. We joined in with the Cayman Owners Club and had a great time ogling bikes and cars alike. Some members went over to the Barrowden 20–49 meetup for cars built between 1920 and 1949, although many other cars were there, from pre and post war to original Cobras and some Porsches.

A small contingent from Peterborough travelled down to Beaulieu and had a wonderful time. So many great cars and equally nice people. A real mecca for Porsches. A fantastic day! I’m sure Peterborough will be in attendance en-masse in 2018. Stuart, Michael & Sunny descended on Neil’s house to test his newly learned detailing skills. His 997 is looking amazing and he set to work on Michael’s 944. After spray foam, various dirt loosening products and a full wash, he worked his magic with his new dual action polishing machine and the difference was astounding. Stuart’s Cayman received a full decontamination too. We are fortunate that a new Porsche specialist, DW Performance LTD, has been opened in the area by a Porsche Gold Accredited Technician from Porsche Centre Silverstone. Several of the club have had their cars in to Kev Waterhouse in

Bedford and in May he welcomed around 40 cars to his inaugural Coffee & Cars morning. He does do a discount for TIPEC members. The range in the workshop from classic Porsches to brand new hybrids is an encouraging sight. Kev will be attending the July meeting as a tech ‘everything you wanted to know about your car’ special. We’ll introduce other themes throughout the summer including detailing, suspension geometry, tyres and more. We’ve continued with our informal ‘Sausages & Spanners’ mornings which cover car fettling and detailing with our resident master, Neil. With the growing membership and events, I have enlisted the help of Nick Papé as ARO alongside Michael. Nick also had a new addition (a 997 C2S)in May to keep his 944 ‘Rog’ company. We spotted a tasteful GT3 body conversion for a Boxster, rather lucky as Ray had just acquired one. We had a good turnout for Sportscars in the Park at Newby Hall, a good show with plenty of variety. Ray & Katharine and Jeff & Edith attended the Prescott Hill Climb and Tour. It didn’t seem as frantic as other years, but a good time was had by all. We bumped into Prince Charles leaving a concert in the local church … well, Katharine had seen his DB5 with dragon hood mascot parked outside earlier and asked the nice policeman what time he was coming out. So we waited and said hello. As you do.

Dean Lancashire, Richard Marot and friend attended the PCGB Anglesey trackday. If you like trackdays this is a must as it has everything. A great day with everybody behaving and no spin offs, the GT4 and the 3.2 RS ran all day without issues. Tying in with that we visited Porsche on the Prom Llandudno. A good turn out from the North West clan who reminded me I’d left my lights on, cheers guys. I even spotted Martin Thorpe from our region who’d had a drive out for the day. June saw Simply Porsche at Beaulieu. If you haven’t been you are missing out on a great day. Ray went round the museum for the first time (and even Katharine was interested). On the Saturday we’d organised a visit to Canford Classics, a hidden gem in a rural setting with classic air-cooled Porsches everywhere. After a tour upstairs looking at engine rebuilds and downstairs perusing cars for sale, we saw that various other buildings included some ‘better than new’ restorations. Thanks to Alan for taking time out to show us around. We moved on to Corfe Castle to catch the steam train into Swanage. After returning by train we caught the ferry back to Sandbanks and some numpty (me) programmed their sat nav wrong and took us back to Canford Classics … oops. Sorry David (in his Morgan) who got caught in a heavy shower.

Stuart’s Rotary chums organised an event at Renishaw Hall. Ray arrived an hour and a half early and the site was already filling up – I think it has become a victim of its own success. Thanks to Ray & Katharine, Bob, Judith and GB & Sally for supporting this good cause. Our German Tour took in the Nurburgring, Baden Baden, Stuttgart Porsche Museum and Cologne, and was attended by Dean & Joanne Lancashire (GT3), Graham Britt & Sally (996TT), and Richard & Sarah Marot (GT4). A fantastic tour which included some quiet time on track over two evenings, a mountain bike tour around the outside of the circuit (make sure you’re fit), a visit to Sabine Schmitz’s family restaurant, BBQs with the Nissan and Michelin test guys, and we all managed to get in the Porsche Museum for free by accident (oops). The V8 hotel is worth a visit if the in area as it has two halls of cars too. We timed our arrival to perfection with parking just outside the main entrance, and within 20 minutes the car park was heaving with Porsches of all years and flavours. With the attraction of Magnus Walker the car park remained busy until late into the evening. I watched Magnus talking to his fans and thought he was extremely courteous, making time to chat and have selfies taken individually with everyone who approached. A group of Central’s finest had a trip over to Laon and a great time was had by all. Unfortunately we had a member’s car break down just before he boarded the ferry home. He had an extended break as it was a Bank Holiday in France that weekend … and arrived home safely later in the week with his wallet a little lighter. We were invited to Shenstone Methodist Church annual show, an informal affair where the whole village seemed to open their homes and gardens and serve tea and cake, very yummy and relaxing.

We had new attendees at both May & June meetings with June notable for representatives across the current suite of GT cars with GTS, GT3 & GT4 models all in the carpark. To show that Porsche owners also have other interesting cars, we’ve had a Mustang and a Corvette along. In June we were also joined by a couple who just happened to be having dinner in the pub (having left the Porsche at home). They were very pleased to find out about the club and left clutching a copy of All Torque and a membership form! The development of the region continues and another important step was made in June with the appointment of two new Assistant Regional Organisers. I’m very pleased to be joined by George Acquah & Jack Littlemore who have generously agreed to help out. I’m going to let them introduce themselves: “Hello, I’m George. I’ve been a member since last year, after Simply Porsche at Beaulieu. I was struck by how welcoming everyone seemed to be, so it was a no-brainer to sign up. I’ve been going to local meets ever since Jim started them up in early 2017, and even attended the AGM in Coventry! “During one of the meets, Jim noticed my habit of working the room (a work-related habit – I am a chartered accountant), and thought I’d be a good person to host one of the meets he couldn’t

North London, Herts & South Essex

How time flies when you’re having fun. Halfway through the year, loads done and loads more to do! So far, the Spa Classic couples weekend, with a few ad hoc ‘cars & coffee’ meets of various types. We also had a Bank Holiday run over to the Ace Café to the NLHSE Regional night which corresponded with Magnus Walker’s first stop on his book tour. This was followed up by a great weekend in the New Forest and Simply Porsche at Beaulieu, with a bunch of us stopping at Lymington. We then supported Tim & Elaine Stevens at their inaugural Suffolk Motor Show with a great turn out of over 200 cars, closely followed on ‘Good Old Facebook’. We enjoyed an evening at Paul Stephens, with Magnus Walker yet again! This time en route from Paris to Le Mans (via Essex – what a detour)! A very chilled affair with a great Q&A session. For those of us not lucky enough to make it to Le Mans, our local Porsche Centre Colchester opened its doors for the whole weekend with every nailbiting minute live (and what a result it was). We had another joint venture with the Porsche Owners UK and the 996 Club at Cressing Temple Barns, spreading the word and swelling our numbers. It was another great turnout for our monthly get together at the Woolie (Woolpack), visited by our neighbours from Peterborough, with talk of our next proper road trip through the Wilds of Wales (WotY) in early July. Also planned: Silverstone Classic, more local shows (Battlesbridge, Colchester), and another trip to the AVD Oldtimers GP at the Nurburgring in August, a BBQ, and Club Carrera UK’s AT / 124

Knowing the likely swollen numbers attending Peter & I arrived early, the car park was already filling and by the usual start time there were probably 80 cars inside and the same again on the road and lining local streets! Simply Porsche on June 4th was again a great success with an estimated 1,000+ cars; the weather was excellent and another good day was had by all. As the club’s main event of the year it continues to grow and I’m sure is a firm fixture going forward. If you haven’t attended, you are missing a great day out, parked in the grounds of the Beaulieu Motor Museum and stately home, perfect for a family day out or a weekend. NLHSE members joined Peter & I at Bromley Pageant on June 18th, taking up the invitation from South East London & North Kent region. Bromley is a huge display event with car clubs

The car show season is in full swing and our regular meetings at the ACE Café and Goat have been blessed with good weather. Simply Porsche at Beaulieu clashed with the Goat in June and The Fast Car Festival at Donington clashed in July, hence my absence, but Peter attended on July 2nd. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the 928 at Brooklands on May 28th saw 156 cars attend, the largest ever gathering of the award winning

and privateers displaying their pride and joy. The sun was out all day, so yet another lucky rain free day. Thanks to Nick Seager for coordinating our cars into the group. On June 30th four of us attended the Friday of Goodwood Festival of Speed; it needed a very early start to avoid rush hour traffic on the M25, but we arrived at 7:30 and had a great day out at the show. Thanks to Peter, Savash & Ken for their company on the day; it is certainly one for the diary in future years.

Ultimate Porsche magazine publishers Kelsey Media issued an invite for 928 owners to provide a small display at the Donington Fast Car Festival on 2nd July. We had 13 cars on show, with owners from the North West, Yorkshire and our own region. An early highlight of the day was the running of an Aston Martin Vulcan; sadly it only managed two outings amounting to three laps before technical issues prevented further running. Peterborough Region We have an open invite to meet with this new region; a date will be proposed by email and on our Facebook page August 27th (Sunday) Little Gransden Air Show In recent years, a small number of members have attended and enjoyed Little Gransden; we will purchase tickets in advance only for those who commit to attend and pay for tickets in advance. August 27th (Sunday) Merlins & Motors, Duxford As this clashes with Little Gransden Air Show, space will only be reserved if there is a clear demand from members; so far no interest has been expressed, we wait to hear from you.

August 20th (Sunday) The Jazz Picnic, 12:30–4:00pm This is a charity event collecting for MS Society. The charge is £10.00 per car.Please bring your own food and drink. Great event with great jazz and in the perfect setting, I can’t recommend this afternoon enough. We all had a great time last year, hoping many more can join us this year. More details to follow. On Saturday 10th June we had our summer visit to Porsche Centre Tonbridge for our car health check. A great mix of cars turned up to be checked over by the technicians. Sunday 18th June we headed en masse to Bromley Motoring Pageant. A huge thank you to Nick Seager for arranging this event for us. We had a great number of cars turn up and were joined by the 928 club as well as members from North London, Herts & Essex Region. The weather was amazing, if anything too hot! Bromley Pageant is the largest one day car show in the world – well worth a visit!

We were lucky enough to be invited to OPC Brooklands on Saturday 6th May for a Service Clinic and BBQ day, and very popular it was too with a good number of Porsche Enthusiasts Club members turning out. A few hours later, Sunday 7th May, we were heading out again, this time for our little drive around Berkshire and Hampshire for breakfast at the Blackbushe Café, which is becoming a regular on the Thames Valley calendar! Anyone for tea? The Grand Hotel in Brighton, here we come! Sunday May 14th was our planned afternoon tea run to one of the PAGE / 35


grandest hotels in England, overlooking the sea of course, what could be better! With the Hampshire region joining us for a good run out, meeting at Newlands Corner, a visit to Porsche Centre Mid-Sussex, a run into Brighton, a walk along the promenade and then to the hotel for tea, sandwiches and yes … cake! A very enjoyable day out was had by all. Simply Porsche at Beaulieu is by far the biggest event that we put on with around a thousand Porsches in attendance enjoying a truly wonderful day. Graham did a great job, arranging to meet at Sutton Scotney services for the run down with about 20 cars in convoy, never easy with so many cars to look out for in your mirrors! A big thank you from Graham and myself to all of you that helped out on the club stand, it wouldn’t happen without you! Following on from Simply Porsche saw a slightly more sedate event with our summer picnic taking place on Sunday 18th June at the Vyne near Basingstoke. We had a nice little run out from the Novello, meeting up with a few of the members from the Hampshire region at Blackbushe Café and then onto the Vyne. Wonderful company, warm and sunny, very relaxing … just what a Sunday picnic is all about!

We are now well into our summer ‘themed’ evenings at the Novello with May being Transaxle night and June being Air-cooled night. These evenings have proved to be very popular and it’s always great to see a good number of both versions of these wonderful cars turning out. They certainly put on a good spread with pleasant views across the golf course. Mike and Liz Barnett are now the proud owners of two 928s. Unfortunately Mike was away at the time of the 928 40th Anniversary at Brooklands Museum so I volunteered to pilot one car, a manual with dogleg gearbox takes some getting used to! Liz took the automatic (sensible lady) and on the way we met up with Claire in her S2. A great turnout with a good selection of cars parked up on the historic banking.

As most of you are aware, Andy Fenwick stepped down as Regional Organiser at the June monthly meeting. I’m sure you will all join me in saying a massive ‘thank you’ to Andy for all he has done for the region over his years as RO. We do need to find a new RO, so please let me know if you might consider taking on the role and we can talk through what’s involved.

when the 928s were shunted off to one corner whilst the other cars went elsewhere … we did meet back up with Tim Mountain but we lost the others in the crowd. At least it was a good turnout but as a personal thought, there could be more trade stands. June Club Night was very different; we reintroduced the Car Swap theme. This is not where you give your car to a complete stranger but is the opportunity for members to offer rides, as passengers, to other members so that they can get a taste of a model they have not previously been in. Many thanks to all those who took part, including John (GT3 RS), Dan (immaculate Targa), Lloyd (911 Turbo Cab) and non-Porsches David (Ferrari, can’t remember the model), Colin (BMW Z4), Terry (BMW 335i) and I brought along a Jaguar XKR. Apologies for anyone I missed out but it is an event we will definitely repeat. Another great Simply Porsche at Beaulieu, once again the weather was on top form and it was a fantastic event. A few of us made the most of it and camped the night before just up the road from Beaulieu. I’ve never done it before but it was great fun and something I’ll do again in the future. It’s a lovely family event with plenty of interesting things to do and see for kids, mine certainly enjoyed it!

The weather was much better for our long weekend in Belgium for the Spa Classic. What a beautiful part of the world – up in the woods of the Ardennes near the German border, where we stayed in a gorgeously quaint little town called Monschau – highly recommended for anyone in that area, for a Motorsport event or otherwise.
