LIFELINES

The Gospel of Life is “meant to be a precise and vigorous reaffirmation of the value of human life and its inviolability, and at the same time a pressing appeal addressed to each and every person, in the name of God: respect, protect, love and serve life, every human life! Only in this direction will you find justice, development, true freedom, peace and happiness!”

(The Gospel of Life 5).

Deacon’s NOTE

We have come here this morning because we want to be in a holy space, full of memories and sacred tradi ons – a place where our ancestors in the faith are s ll with us, and s ll worshipping. This morning, this room is Jacob’s well, where we encounter one another as Jesus once encountered a Samaritan woman: spiritually thirsty, but with ears open, listening to one another, encountering one another and encountering our blessed Christ.

And we have come because we s ll believe in that promise of living water that sa sfies thirsty souls.

We, like the Samaritan woman, have known what it means to be thirsty: and we, too, have encountered the One who offers us living water, so sa sfying that we will never thirst again. Deacon Ron Maida—dorronto@protonmail.com

2024 REGULATIONS FOR LENT

All faithful of the Diocese of Scranton are reminded of Diocesan Statute No. 41 which addresses the penitential aspect of Lent: “The season of Lent is penitential in nature and during Lent penance should be not only internal & individual, but also external & social Sacrosanctum Concilium, No. 5, 109). Pastors are obliged to avoid scheduling activities in the parishes which in any way could possibly detract from the external and social penance required by Lent.”

During Lent the following fast and abstinence regulations are observed:

• Good Friday, March 29th, is a day of fast and abstinence.

• Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence.

• All Catholics who have reached their 14th birthday are to abstain from eating meat on Good Friday and on all Fridays during Lent.

• All Catholics over 18 years of age to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to the obligation of fasting. Those bound by this rule may take only one full meal and two smaller meals unless dispensed or excused.

LENTEN REMINDERS

Lent is a time for sacrifice and for spiritual renewal as we reflect upon our baptism and the call given to each of us to walk as disciples of the Lord. We are provided with three personal challenges associated with our individual observance of Lent:

• Almsgiving – generously giving to those in need

• Fasting – practicing self-discipline and self-denial

• Prayer – reading, hearing and reflecting on the Word of God

?

• By “giving up” things you hunger after, such as sweets or alcohol; or activities you desire, such as vacations, concerts or movies.

• By “doing” things to help others, such as offering an extra donation to the poor or helping those in need by providing food or clothing.

• By “adding” to our normal routine, such as going to daily Mass, praying the Stations of the Cross and going to confession.

Lent continues until the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, March 28th.

LENTEN HOLY HOUR WITH BISHOP BAMBERA

For the second consecutive year, all of the faithful in the Diocese of Scranton are invited to a Lenten Holy Hour with the Most Reverend Joseph C. Bambera, Bishop of Scranton, to commemorate the Year of Parish Revival for the National Eucharistic Revival.

OPERATION RICE BOWL

RAISING CHICKENS TO SUPPORT HER FAMILY

Nowadays, in Morazán, El Salvador, it is very difficult to know when the rainy or dry seasons will be. The unpredictable weather puts the livelihood of Sandra's family in jeopardy. Despite the challenges, Sandra and her husband, Santos, remain dedicated to ensuring their children grow healthy and succeed in school. Learn how their strong family dynamic enabled Sandra to participate in a Catholic Relief Services’ project on raising chickens and how her determination has helped her family and community. Visit crsricebowl.org to read this week’s Story of Hope.

The Rice Bowl Collection is the second collection on Holy Thursday. You can place your envelopes in the collection any time during Lent.

GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION

During Holy Week, the Gospel readings come to life in a special way as we gather to celebrate the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. The readings remind us of our special connection to the land where this great story unfolded. Supporting the church in the Holy Land is an historic mission. Since the time of St. Paul, Christians worldwide have understood the responsibility to support the land where Jesus walked. (cf. 2 Cor. 8-9)

Our collection on Good Friday will be the Pontifical Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land. You can also place your envelopes in the collection at any time during Lent.

LENTEN RETREAT FOR MEN

All men, ages 18 years and older, are invited to an overnight Lenten Retreat titled "Spiritual Direction: I'm Not Lost, I'm Wondering" from 6:00PM Friday, March 15th to 2:00PM Saturday, March 16th, at Holy Transfiguration Retreat Center in Dalton. Participants will examine the spiritual journey of men in our world, moving from wandering to wondering about God’s will in their lives. There will be talks by Fr. Pio Mandato, Fr. Stan Fortuna, Fr. Brian Van Fossen, and Mike Donovan, opportunities for Adoration and Confession, and Holy Mass offered by Bishop Joseph Bambera. This is a great way to renew one's heart and mind before Easter.

The cost is only $75, which includes meals and overnight accommodation at the retreat center. For info visit www.beacatholicman.com / Joe Adcroft at jadcroft@kknepa.com or 570-380-5070.
