Captain Dinosaur Report Fire at Taylor Recycling Facility

CAPTAIN DINOSAUR REPORT TAYLOR RECYCLING FACILITY GLENMARY DRIVE 16 OCTOBER 2022

At about 5:50 am, The Owego Fire Department was toned out for a possible structure fire at the Taylor garbage recycling facility. The weather was cool with temperatures around 40 degrees, light wind and darkness. Follow up communications confirmed a working fire in a large steel building. The first responding chiefs requested Tioga Center be dispatched for a tanker to support Owego for a water supply. Shortly after that Campville, Southside, Candor and Apalachin were requested for mutual aid.

The involved building was of steel construction. The supports were along the walls leaving a free standing construction with no interior support pillars throughout. The approximate size was 75 feet wide and 250 feet deep. On arrival the fire was well established in loose garbage, emitting heavy smoke.

Owego Engine 804 set up operation at the front and supplied Owego Tower 841 at the far side of the building. Campville Engine 302 positioned on the front near side.

Water supply was provided by the 6 tankers performing a shuttle operation.

Owego Emergency Support Services (ESS) served coffee and food and Fire Police controlled traffic on Glenmary Drive. EMS was present with the Owego Emergency Squad and Campville EMS.

Quick action by all departments limited the scale of the event and helped control the burning material within 1½ hours. About 40 personnel from 6 departments were on the scene and no serious injuries were reported.

Metal buildings of this construction style are composed of all vertical supports within the exterior walls and attach to the steel roof trusses. The trusses are clear span meaning there are no interior support posts. Critical to firefighting is the rapid collapse of these buildings when high heat is encountered. With the rapid attack this morning, the heat buildup was limited and this prevented a collapse.

This efficiency of the operation comes from a close working relationship between the departments along with a series of continuing training sessions and classes. This culminates with a well integrated attack.

It is an honor to work with all of you.
