Never Forget & Always Remember September 11, 2001. Never Forget & Always Remember those who died, those who survived, and those brave heroes who answered the call to help others.

In 1958, the Apalachin Lions initiated an annual “door to door” Broom Sale. This event was a Community Service Fund Raiser and all money raised was used to help the Lions better serve our community. In 2020, due to the uncertainty raised by Covid 19 and out of concern for the health and safety of our community, the door to door Broom Sale was discontinued. This year, however, there will be special sales on September 8 and 10. Each year substantial funds must still be raised by the Lions to finance their numerous community programs and to provide aid to needy families. Annually the Lions typically provide over $25,000 to help local residents. The money is used for activities which include Disaster Relief, Scholarships to High School Seniors, Special Olympics, Highway Cleanup, Elementary and Pre school Eye Screenings, Christmas Baskets, Santa Phones, the Easter Egg Hunt, Emergency Expense Assistance, a Summer Picnic and Winter Social for the visually impaired, Back to School gift certificates, and the annual Senior Citizens Dinner. According to a spokesperson for the Apalachin Lions, while there will no longer be a door to door sale, the Lions still have their extensive inventory of brooms and other quality products available for sale. Please look for their sales in Apalachin on Thursday, Sept. 8 (4 to 7pm) and Saturday, Sept. 10 (9am to 1pm) at both the Visions and Sweeneys Market parking lots, and help support the Apalachin, Campville, and Little Meadows community. An anniversary ribbon cutting was held on August 30, for the Little Creek Farm at 2027 Day Hollow Road in Owego. The event was hosted by the Tioga Chamber of Commerce.Little Creek Farm, located at the corner of Day Hollow and Gaskill Road in Owego, operates a family run farm store. This store started during the COVID 19 pandemic by offering to neighbors its farm fresh eggs, pork, and beef in a stand by the road, all on the honor system. To keep up with the high demand, the stand was moved into the old farm barn (built in 1863) and their product line was expanded. They now offer a wide variety of local products as well as other convenience and novelty items. However, they are becoming most famous for their “Farm Fresh Donuts.” The store is open year round, Monday to Saturday, from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. It is closed on Sundays.

The Tioga County Veterans Service Agency and Tioga County recognize September as “Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.” On September 1, the agency unveiled for the fifth straight year, the “Field of the Forgotten Fallen” on the lawn of the Tioga County Office Building at 56 Main Street in Owego. The exhibit will stay up through the entire month to bring attention to the national tragedy that is veteran suicide. This exhibit is designed to raise awareness about the issue of veteran suicide.Twenty two veterans a day complete suicide, that’s 154 per week, 660 per month and 8,000 per year. STOP 22 Share the Struggle is a Tioga County Veterans Service Agency’s Dwyer Program project. For more information about this event and to get involved in STOP 22, call Mike or email him at middaughm@tiogacountyny.gov

This fall, Candor high school students interested in a career in healthcare can add EMT training to their schedule. That’s because Candor EMS, with a generous grant from the Floyd Hooker Foundation, is offering a Junior Healthcare Program to young people between 16 18 years old. The new program integrates the junior EMT program with classes currently offered by Colby Westervelt through Candor High School’s Health Services program. “Our goal,” says Candor EMS Director Curtis Hammond, “is to provide training and certification for young people who want to go into medical careers.” Students will learn about the diversity of opportunities in healthcare. One of the forces driving this new initiative is the urgent need for emergency medical technicians and paramedics in rural areas. “We hope to boost interest in becoming first responders,” Hammond admits, “but we need more than EMTs. We are currently experiencing a shortage of providers across all of the health care fields.” The new Junior Healthcare Program will go beyond the school classroom, offering students experience on the ambulance and, Hammond hopes, opportunities for clinical time. Planning for the program began this past winter. Third lieutenant Shelby Wheeler did much of the organizational groundwork, collaborating with Sean Lanning from the Tioga County Department of Economic Development & Planning to secure funding for the new“Studentsprogram. participating in the program this year will have an opportunity to offer feedback and help shape the program going forward,” said Wheeler. “In the future we hope to see it grow into a county wide program.” While Candor EMS is involved in developing and teaching the courses, Hammond noted that a large component of the program is its community involvement. “We are collaborating with local schools and colleges, hospitals, and other EMS agencies, as well as community partners,” he said.
