CAPTAIN DINOSAUR REPORT 4-26-2022

Campville Fire Dept. Structure Fire

Early on Tuesday morning, April 26, at about 3:40 am, the Campville Fire Department was alerted by Tioga County Dispatch of a structure fire on East Beecher Hill Road. The weather was clear and warm. Campville responded with Engines 302, 303, and 304, Aerial Ladder 301,

Tanker 321, EMS, Fire Police and Emergency Support Services. It was rapidly transmitted the blaze was the sawmill near the McClean Valley intersection. Command immediately called for Mutual Aid from Southside Fire, Owego Fire, and Newark Valley Fire. As the enormity of the scene became apparent additional

help was requested from Apalachin, Berkshire, and Richford Fire Departments. It was quickly determined a large tanker shuttle supply system would be necessary to combat the inferno and additional support was dispatched from Broome County including East Maine, Vestal, and 4 other departments, all supplying large tankers. At the height of the blaze about 12 water supply vehicles were driving approximately a 10-mile circular route and supplying in excess of one quarter million gallons of water. Because of a long uphill driveway, only one engine and the aerial ladder approached the immediate site, with the balance of the 16 apparatus supporting the attack. Large diameter

hose lines were laid up the driveway with pumpers operating to feed them from the bottom of the hill. Approximately 60 fire fighters were on the scene along with the Tioga County Fire Coordinators Office and NYS Police. The entire operation encompassed 12 hours with the last units being placed in service at about 4:00 pm. Importantly all firefighters returned home safely and the fire was limited to the buildings initially involved. It is an honor to work with all of you, Captain Dinosaur

Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers Announces New Program Staff

Charity Field has been named Program Officer of the Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers. She joined the Foundation on April 12, 2022, and will oversee the Foundation’s grants programs. Charity comes to the Foundation with over 20 years expertise in the non-profit sector. Most recently, as the District Executive Director for the Bradford and Tioga County YMCAs, Charity’s focus was to strengthen communities. She was instrumental in growing the programs and services for all ages. With the help of staff and volunteers, she implemented creative ideas such as 24/7 access that adapted to the needs of those served, specifically those with nontraditional employment. Beyond fitness, she also helped bring several chronic disease programs, increased aquatics programming, childcare and more. “Charity is passionate about helping families and individuals and she is joining the Foundation at the perfect time to advance our philanthropic work. She has led programs that function alongside staff and volunteers, which shows the creativity and collaboration we are looking for at

the Foundation” said Suzanne Lee, President of the Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers. She added, “Charity has the experience with leading a non-profit, but it was her experience with the community that meant a lot as well.” “After working in Bradford County for the YMCA, one of the larger nonprofits, Charity brings an existing connection to many of our local and regional partners. The Foundation has recently experienced the largest growth in its history. We are looking ahead building a strong capacity for the generous donors in our communities committed to finding solutions to our most pressing needs,” said Tom Shoemaker, Chair of the Board of Directors at the Foundation. Charity is currently a member of The Rotary Club of Towanda PA, and the Bradford County Children & Youth Services Board. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Relations and Elementary Education at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. Charity lives in Sayre, PA with her husband and two children. Founded in 2003, the Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers serves 5 counties, Bradford, Potter, Sullivan, and Tioga Counties, PA, and Tioga County, New York. The Foundation is committed to building philanthropic resources that will sustain healthy and vital communities now and into the future. The Foundation currently manages over 150 funds valued at $12 million dollars and has awarded over $1.5 million in grants and scholarships since inception, positively impacting hundreds of lives in the region. For more information on its work in the community contact Suzanne Lee at (570) 888-4759 or slee@twintierscf.org and www.twintierscf.org.

In April, Stephen and Kimberly Cruty, owners of Fuddy Duddy’s Confectionery at 27 Lake St. in Owego, conducted a local fundraiser to raise money and awareness of the Russian war and aggression toward Ukraine and its people. Kimberly Cruty designed and created a milk chocolate sunflower that was available for sale in store and on their website. The sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine. At the end of the month, Fuddy Duddy’s generated $1,225 in chocolate sunflower sales. Sixty-one anglers enjoyed a mostly sunny day at the Owego Hose Team’s 3rd Annual Trout Derby on Saturday, April 2, 2022. The Hose Team in partnership with Tioga County Anglers hosted the derby for anglers of all ages at Croton Hose Co. #3 Fire Station on Talcott Street. “We saw many out-of-town participants,” said Hose Team Trout Derby Co-Chair Mike Glasgow. “Part of the reason we hold this event is to showcase the trout fishing we are lucky to have right here in our backyard on the Owego Creek.” Congratulations go to 2022 Owego Hose Team Trout Derby winner Randy Outman, Jr. with a monster 24-1/2-inch brown trout. Second Place goes to last year’s winner David Givens with a 22-1/2inch brown trout.

Third place goes to Emma Howe with a 20-inch brown trout. Glasgow presented Tioga County Anglers a $500 check from the day’s proceeds aiding the organization’s push to better Tioga County cold water fisheries. Fishing for the tournament was limited to both the east and west branches of the Owego Creek and all registrants were required to have a valid New York State fishing license and abide by all New York State Department of Conservation (DEC) rules and regulations. Fly, spin, and bait fishing were permitted. A chicken BBQ was held in conjunction with the Trout Derby and eager patrons lined Talcott Street waiting for the Cornell sauce-based chicken. The Hose Team appreciated everyone’s patience.

Demolition of Houses in Owego Neighborhood

The demolition of eight residential structures, along with two sheds owned by the Tioga County Property Development Corporation (Tioga County Land Bank) are underway in the Village of Owego. These structures, located on Temple Street and Liberty Street, have been a source of blight in the neighborhood for many years, with conditions significantly worsening after flooding caused by Tropical Storm Lee in 2011. The demolitions are being completed by LCP Group, in coordination with O’Rourke, Inc., the firm that will be handling air monitoring for the project. “We are excited to see this project underway,” says Tioga County Land Bank Director Brittany Woodburn. “The Land Bank acquired these properties throughout 2020 and 2021, and the removal of

these distressed structures will eliminate significant blight in this neighborhood, and allow for new opportunities for the residents of Liberty Street and Temple Street, and the surrounding area.” Ralph Kelsey, Chair of the Tioga County Land Bank Board adds, “We are pleased to be able to bring this project to life, and are looking forward to similarly partnering with our other communities in the future to help combat blight and deterioration, and revitalize housing, neighborhoods and downtowns throughout Tioga County.”
