The Candor Central School District (CSD) Mascot committee recently announced its new mascot that will officially start howling on July 1, 2023: The Candor Coyotes!
The Candor Coyotes are unique, strong spirited, clever, instinctive, adaptable, fun and playful. The Candor Coyotes love new opportunities, thrive on teamwork, are affectionate and are proud to sing the school’s praises.

In the 1950’s Ed Nizalowski was told of a black burial ground in the Oakley Corners State Forest by his father, but it wasn’t until 1981 that Ed was able to visit the site. This visit sparked a desire to learn if there was any truth behind the story. By examining census records, he was able to prove that Black people lived on a farm belonging to Madison Livermore in the 1870’s. When looking at other information pertaining to Black people, Ed discovered an Afro-American past in Tioga County that stretched back to the mid-1700’s.
Ed has led hikes since 1992. He will be giving an orientation session concerning the hike starting at 9:00 am inside the Herrick Barn at the Bement-Billings Farmstead. It will include information relating to the burial ground, Black history in Tioga County, a history of the farm that is now the state forest and some tips on how to interpret the rural landscape.
The hike has become much more than just an interesting aspect of local Black history. It will help give a glimpse of how primeval wilderness was transformed into a highly productive farm that is now a state forest.
Note: Those not wishing or unable to go to the orientation session for the burial ground hike should meet at 10:00 am at Oakley Corners, a spot near the center of the Oakley Corners State Forest. The hike is a relatively easy one with a wellmarked trail. Oakley Corners is three miles from the juncture of Wade Hollow and Route 38. (Wade Hollow is three miles south of the stoplight in Newark Valley on Route 38 or six miles north of the Village of Owego.) Travelers from the Triple Cities can take Dutchtown Road for about two miles off of Route 38B. The hike is normally done rain or shine, but severe weather may result in postponement

Forced Entry Simulator for Fire Department
The members of the Apalachin Lions Club & Foundation teamed up with the Apalachin Fire Department (AFD) to purchase a Forced Entry Simulator which will be used to train local firefighters in opening residential and commercial entry doors during emergency situations.
This simulator will increase efficiency and, with practice, undoubtedly save lives and property.
The Apalachin Lions Foundation assisted in the purchase of the simulator with a significant donation to the Apalachin Fire Department. Both parties look forward to the new forced entry simulator becoming a significant contributor to firefighter training.
The Apalachin Lions Club has served Apalachin, Little Meadows and Campville since 1956 and is part of Lions Clubs International, a world-wide volunteer community service organization.

Hose Team Continues Fundraising Efforts for Steamer Project
Several fundraisers planned for Steam Fire Engine Restoration
Owego Hose Teams, Inc. continues its fundraising efforts for the Owego Fire Department’s 1866 Amoskeag Steam Fire Engine restoration project and associated Steamer House on North Avenue. Several fundraisers are planned in the coming weeks. Now under the care, custody, and control of the Hose Team the Steamer is undergoing a complete restoration at Firefly Restorations in Hope, Maine. The Steamer boiler recently received its American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) stamp in February. This was accomplished through a “hydro test” or stress procedure to determine the integrity of the boiler unit. The new boiler will now be fitted on the existing frame and replumbed.
To help offset these costs and the new building, Hose Team Members are working the following upcoming events: Chicken Barbeque/Trout Derby on Saturday, April 8, at Croton Hose Co. #3 Fire Station on Talcott St. The Hose Team in partnership with Tioga County Anglers will host its 4th Annual Trout Derby. The contest for anglers of all ages will be held virtually or by checking fish in at the fire station on Talcott St. More than 60 anglers participated in the event last year. Online registration is available at the Hose Team website at www.OwegoHoseTeams.com.
The registration deadline with $10 fee is Friday, April 7. You must be registered to participate. A chicken BBQ will be held in conjunction with the Trout Derby but sold separately for $10. Monthly Bingo returns on Saturday, April 8, at American Legion Post #401 on Front St. Doors open at 10am and games begin promptly at 11am. Twentyfour rounds of 12 games will be played from “regular” that includes straight bingo or inside, outside four corners to “cover all.” Bingo has been drawing about 50 players per month so far with proceeds being split between the Hose Team and Legion Post.

The Little Meadows Methodist Church women will have a Rummage and Bake Sale on Saturday, April 22, from 9 am to 2 pm at the Little Meadows (PA) United Methodist Church, 843 Pennsylvania Ave./ Rte. 858 in Little Meadows, PA. Hose Team Golf at Tioga Golf Club in Nichols on Saturday, June 3. The field for the 6th Annual Hose Team Golf Tournament is full with 65 teams registered for both morning and afternoon flights. A waiting list has been started for any cancellations by contacting Pat Gavin at 202-494-9108. Sponsorship opportunities are still available for one of the largest charity golf tournaments in the Southern Tier. Individuals can also contribute to the project by participating in the Hose Team’s “Steam Booster” donor program. For a one-hundred-dollar ($100) tax deductible contribution name (s) will be placed on a cast iron bronze plaque that will proudly hang on the Steamer House building. Donors will receive a letter and certificate thanking them for their donation. Donors can also purchase benches that will surround the Steamer House. Information on all fundraisers can be found at the Hose Team’s website.
The Hose Team expects the Steam Fire Engine restoration to be completed this year and Steamer House building raised funding dependent.
