Pharmacy Closing After 64 Years

After 64 years the Apalachin area will be without a pharmacy again. Jay Lilkiya, owner and pharmacist, closed the Apalachin Pharmacy late last month. The UPS Store and Gift Shop will remain open. In 1958 the father/son team of Bill and Jim Hamlin opened the Apalachin Pharmacy (pictured below) on Rt. 17 (now Rt. 434) and W. Main St., and operated the pharmacy for 26 years. In 1983, Ken Manti continued the Pharmacy for the next 10 years. In 1993, Jay Lilkiya took ownership of the Pharmacy and in 2003, the Pharmacy moved to a new building at its current location on Rt. 434 at Williams Street. A ribbon cutting at the new location was held on September 29, 2003 (pictured at right).

NOW IS THE TIME TO GET YOUR TILLER AND LAWNMOWER CHECKED OUT AND READY FOR SPRING!

In the spirit of full transparency, the Borough of Little Meadows would like to address the public concerning the pursuit of a small communities grant from The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). The purpose of this grant would be to enhance the current park, located at 819 Pennsylvania Avenue in Little Meadows, PA. If awarded, the park upgrades will include adding a walking path to the perimeter of the LMB Park that connects all features of the park as well as to the existing sidewalk in front of the borough building. Removing old, rusted & broken playground equipment. Adding an inclusive swing seat to the existing swing set. Adding ADA compliant rubber mulch around and connecting to all the playground equipment and to the proposed walking path (Creating ADA/Handicap access compliance). Adding a bench for additional seating. Adding various youth fitness centers, (i.e., pull up bar, sit up bench, parallel bars, etc.). These up-

grades will provide the community with a safe place to meet, exercise & play. This grant will be awarded at the beginning of 2023 if the Borough of Little Meadows is selected. Groundbreaking will take place in the spring of the same year. The project will take place through the summer and plan to be completed in the fall of 2023. A second phase of this project, including another grant application at the beginning of 2023 will occur. This second phase will include expanding the playground area with a large play structure. This again is contingent on the award of the second grant application. All questions can be addressed to the Little Meadows Borough Council during the monthly council meeting. These meetings occur every second Monday of every month at 7:00 pm, at the Little Meadows Borough Building located at the same address as the park mentioned above. Meeting minutes and agenda are posted on the borough building door every month.

Candor Historical Society Receives Mildred Faulkner Truman Foundation Award by Carol A. Henry With renovation projects at the Candor History Center still underway, the Board has been busy with several fundraising opportunities, as well as having applied for and successfully obtaining a grant from the Mildred Faulkner Truman Foundation. The Candor Historical Society is thankful to have received an initial grant of $25,260.00. The Foundation also awarded them a discretionary grant of $1,000. These grants will be assigned to Phase 3 of the overall renovation project, which will be to fully insulate the entire building. This will reduce the cost of heating the History Center, and contribute to greater financial sustainability for the Society. The History Center is once again open for visitors on Mondays from 9:00 am until 12:00 noon, or by appointment. Contact person is Georgia Westgate (607-659-7769). A list of some of the collections available to search include CCS Alumni Newsletters, community annual events, Barns of Upstate NY, books and booklets about Candor’s history, books of other neighboring communities’ histories, Candor Bicentennial 1811-2011, CCS Annuals, cemetery records from local cemeteries, family files and genealogies on many local families, businesses and community organizations through the years, newspaper articles, maps of Candor from various years, Candor Schools, and a large variety of past and present photos. The Historical Society has several other ongoing fundraisers in the works. One such fundraiser to assist with the renovation project at the History Center is their Can and Bottle Drive with the Neighborhood Redemption Center on 5th Avenue in Owego. Candor’s Home Central location on Rt. 96 has enthusiastically allowed the Historical Society to use their site as a drop-off location. If dropping off at the Neighborhood Redemption Center, be sure to mention that

they are for the Candor Historical Society. Be sure to place your cans and bottles in a plastic bag for easy distribution at both locations. Another fundraiser for the Historical Society is through Amazon Smile. Shoppers can go to smile.amazon.com and choose the Candor Historical Society as your recipient. By placing a link to Amazon Smile on your computer, you can use this Amazon Smile account when ordering from Amazon, and the Historical Society will receive 0.5% of the cost of eligible purchases. For those wishing to simply contribute to the Candor Historical Society, whether for their renovation project or general operational funds, you can either send a check, or visit their website: at https:// candorhistoricalsociety.weebly.com/ and choose PayPal. By choosing the PayPal Giving Fund, 100% of your donation goes to the Historical Society. You will find links to both Amazon Smile and PayPal Giving on the Historical Society website. Food Bank of the Southern Tier The Food Bank of the Southern Tier announced that Check Out Hunger 2022—the 28th year of its largest, annual community fundraising campaign— was a tremendous success. The amazing support of its grocery partners (Jubilee Foods, Save-A-Lot, Tops Friendly Markets, and Wegmans), media partners (WETM-TV in Elmira and WIVT-TV and WBGH-TV in Binghamton), and the generous community of shoppers all combined to donate $223,295 - or 669,885 meals - to support the Food Bank’s mission of building and sustaining hunger-free communities across the Southern Tier. This year’s Check Out Hunger campaign kicked off on Sunday, January 23, at Jubilee Foods, Save-A-Lot, and Tops Friendly Markets, with Wegmans launching their campaign the following week, on Sunday, January 30. All campaigns concluded between mid-February and mid-March. Throughout the campaign, grocery retailers united with shoppers who were able to donate right at the register when making their purchases, even if using self-checkout. Check Out Hunger 2022 culminated in the March 29th GratiTOUR, a oneday travelling celebration when Food Bank staff visited and celebrated all 14 participating grocery store partners, taking photos and live-posting on social

media. GratiTOUR is a true expression of gratitude to all store staff and store customers for their generous support. Additionally, GratiTOUR honors Golden Cashiers, the cashiers at each location who tirelessly asked customers to support Check Out Hunger and who rang up the most donations at their store. “We are so grateful to our grocery partners, their customers, and our media partners for ensuring the continued success of our annual Check Out Hunger campaign,” says Natasha Thompson, President & CEO of the Food Bank. “Every dollar truly does make a difference and your donations will support our critical work in communities across the Southern Tier.” A highlight of this year’s campaign was the 18th annual Jubilee Foods shopping spree, in which one special winner was given a two-minute shopping spree at Horseheads Jubilee Foods. WETMTV in Elmira broadcasted the March 8th early morning festivities live during their 6am and 6:30am programming. This year’s winner, Kelly Lloyd, set a new shopping spree record by gathering more than $2,800 in groceries for her family and friends. And Jubilee Foods, once again, generously added to their campaign funds by matching Kelly’s shopping spree value with an additional donation to the Food Bank.
