Rural Health Network of SCNY to Celebrate 25th Anniversary
Rural Health Network of SCNY has announced its 25th Anniversary Event. The Fundraiser will highlight its mission to advance the health and well-being of rural people and communities. Proceeds will support this mission and Rural Health Network’s areas of focus: improving access to health services, education, food, transportation, well-being, and advocacy.
Titled “Mash it Up on a Monday,” the event is open to the public by advance ticket sales only and will be held on Monday, October 16, from 5:00 to 7:30pm. It will feature cold and hot appetizers (including a unique mashedpotato bar), musical entertainment, cash bar, a keynote speaker, desserts, a basket auction, and a presentation honoring Rural Health Network’s founding board members. The venue is the beautiful ballroom of the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, Binghamton. Tioga County Rural Ministry’s Holiday Food & Gift Program

Tioga County Rural Ministry (TCRM) is taking registrations for holiday food for Thanksgiving and Christmas starting on Monday, October 2, at 10:00 am.
Stop by TCRM October 2 through October 13 to register for holiday food.
In-person visits are preferred because extra volunteers will be on hand to assist with this effort. If transportation or health is a deterrent to an in-person visit, call (607) 687-
3021 to register. You may only register at one pantry to receive holiday food.
If you have children age 12 or younger and reside in Tioga County, you may sign up for a clothing gift for each child and also for the toy distribution which will be held at the VFW.
The last day to register for these holiday programs is Friday, October 13.
The Apalachin Lions are looking for help with the cleanup of Rt 434 on Saturday, October 7, at 9:00 am.
The cleanup crew will meet at BEAM ELECTRONICS next to Dunkin Donuts on Rt 434. The amount of time normally spent is approximately 2 hours to pick

Owego Home & Building Tour - Oct. 21

Tioga Arts Council (TAC) will present its Owego Home Tour Fundraiser on Saturday, October 21, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.
The Owego Home & Building Tour is a fundraising event designed to highlight the extraordinary architecture in Tioga County and to exhibit the creative ways in which buildings are being used by contemporary families and businesses. It is one of TAC’s most beloved fundraisers attracting visitors from all over the region who explore these spaces and enjoy Owego’s downtown attractions.
Ticket are $25 for TAC supporters, and $35 for not-yet-supporters. All ticket holders must check-in at the Home Central Showroom at 151 Central Avenue in Owego. Tour locations will be provided in the booklets.
Participants are asked to wear shoe coverings inside the homes on the tour and only visits parts of the home or building authorized by the owner. Docents will be there to help you.

Owego Hose Teams, Inc. is hosting their annual Fall Chicken Barbecue on Saturday, October 7, from 11:00 am till gone with pickup at Croton Hose Co. #3 Fire Station, 8 Talcott Street, on the Flats. Proceeds will benefit the Hose Team’s 1866 Amoskeag Steam Fire Engine Restoration and Steamer House project.
It has been a busy barbecue season for the Hose Team with multiple organizations benefitting from their culinary expertise. Rudin Family Farm & Doug Worthing benefits, Tioga County Historical Association and Museum, and most recently the Shady Strong ALS Awareness organization partnered with the Hose Team on chicken barbecues for the benefit of the community and its people.
“It is our pleasure and obligation as a civic minded organization to help,” said Hose Team Treasurer John Loftus. “These chicken barbecues are just another avenue for the Hose Team to provide assistance to those organizations and individuals who need a helping hand.”
The October barbecue will benefit the Hose Team’s steam fire engine restoration project. The menu includes “Cornell Chicken” halves, the Duke’s baked beans, salt potatoes, and Roma roll for $14. Take-out or drive-thru is available.

Candor’s Fall Festival Celebrating 25 Years

by Carol A. HenryCelebrating twenty-five years of pulling the community together for an annual Fall Festival, the Candor Chamber of Commerce has a lot to offer again this year.
Highlighted around the Catatonk Valley Woodcarvers Show (Oct. 7 and 8) at the Candor Fire Hall with carving demonstrations, and carving raffles), are many events throughout the community including yard sales and pop-up events.
Starting off with a Fall Block Party at the Town Hall Pavilion sponsored by the Candor Chamber of Commerce and Candor Farmers Market, Friday night October 6, 5:00-8:00 pm, there will be live bands, vendors, produce, food truck, fire pits, S’mores bar, and much more. Fall Festival T-shirts will be available for purchase (as well as at Side Hill Acres) so you’ll be dressed for the weekend’s Fall Fest events around town.
But don’t forget to check out the many vendors who will be set up at Side Hill Acres, both Saturday and Sunday, including Finger Lakes Wineries, wine and cheese tastings, kids’ activity area, mingling with the goats, local craft vendors.

The Candor American Legion Auxiliary is holding a vendor Craft Fair and Bake Sale on Saturday, October 7, 9am to 4pm, located at 90 Spencer Rd., behind the Legion at the lower pavilion next to the creek. Besides various vendors, they are offering raffles and a chicken and biscuit luncheon. All proceeds benefit our military and their families, veterans, the community, and the Honor Flight.

The EMS will be opening their doors at 58 Main Street, Saturday and Sunday, 9am to 3pm, and will have free Cider and Snacks, as well as hands only CPR, First Aid education, Hunter Safety Education and ambulance tours. Stop in at Fay’s Fitness’ Open House, 41 Owego Road, to celebrate their 30 years in business, October 7, 10am to 2pm. Take part in an Atlatl competition, or watch the demonstrations at 90 Main Street, 11 to 4 on Saturday and Sunday, located in the back yard. Tracey Kid’s Crafts will be at the Candor Home Central on Friday morning between 9:00 and 3:00. Kids are invited to make an assortment of paper crafts. They will be serving cider and donuts from Iron Kettle.
For more entertainment, you can enjoy pie a la mode from 1pm to 4pm on Saturday, at the McKendree United Methodist Church, 224 Owego St., sponsored by McKendree Methodist United Women in Faith who will be serving up pie and ice cream ($5, just pie $3, just ice cream $2). Stop in at the Candor Congregational Church Sunday evening October 8, for an old-fashioned hymn sing followed by an ice cream social (5:00 – 6:30).
Are you still hungry? There’s food vendors at Side Hill Acres, the American Legion’s luncheon, enticing goodies at Brewed Awakenings on Main Street.
Whatever your plans are for Candor’s Fall Festival weekend, consider entering their annual Scarecrow Contest. There is no entry fee, but in order to be included, you must fill out the entry form, available on the Candor Chamber’s website, by October 1. No adult or political themes, all entries must be in good taste, and scarecrows must be in place for judging by October 4. Winners will be announced on October 7.
There is entertainment for the entire family throughout the Candor community, including pop-up yard sales (check out Kathy’s Korner Gift Shop at 506 Owego Rd.), and roadside markets such as Huizinga Farmstead at 463 Ithaca Road. Two Brother’s Pizza and Sub Shop Opens in Candor

Graduating Class, Terry Rose and Bartt Smith have teamed up to delve into creating a gathering place for young and old alike. A place where schoolmates, friends, and relatives can meet up, enjoy a slice of fresh prepared pizza or subs served on fresh in-house baked sub rolls, and experience a camaraderie that Rose and Smith have shared like brothers over the years.
During one of their conversations in 2021, both Rose and Smith realized they had a similar dream to give back to the community. “A lot of it truly has to do with the history of the town,” Smith said. “The things we’ve always loved, the special places there are and were, and what it was like growing up in Candor. And Terry’s passion for pizza! In truth, we want to be one of those places that become part of the community.”
Their love of food preparation, their social skills, and their passion to share their dream with others has culminated in their joint venture of the Two Brothers Pizza and Subs. Smith credits the help they’ve received in an effort to learn from others who have ‘been there’, including his cousin Matt, who owns Pour House Pub and Grill in Endicott, as well as Pete and Sherry Claire from Turkey Trot Acres, and Brewed Awakening. In additions, the “Two Brothers” appreciate the solid support they’ve received from other local people, businesses, and groups such as the Health Department, and the Village of Candor.
When asked what they envision the eatery to project, Rose commented, “My hope is people enjoy what we offer enough to make a connection with the community, provide a nice place for kids, families, and to be able to share our success by giving back to the community.”
And many in the community have been all but holding their breath waiting for opening day. Asked what has taken so long, their response was that the down-side of the site being a historic building (the old Candor Town Hall/ Candor Market), meant that there were unforeseen layers and changes required
to bring the building up to date, and up to code. The actual reconstruction of the interior layout to provide easy ordering, and a comfortable environment for their customers, took much deliberation and construction and time. And with any new food establishment, it required contacting multiple vendors.
“Most of our inventory will come from local suppliers with ties to local producers,” Rose stated. “Our goal is to keep things local as much as practically possible.”
“Our main attraction will be our wood-fired pizza oven that is directly behind the counter which will allow customers to watch the pizzas being created and tended to through the quick cooking process,” Smith said. “The majority of the remaining kitchen, including the double decker stone pizza oven, will be open - there will be no doors blocking the view of the kitchen, allowing interaction between the cooks and the customers.”
Daily specials are currently in the developmental stage. However, a wing night will be one of their highlights, as well as offering specialty pizzas on a weekly basis. The two concur that they will not be serving alcohol of any kind, and there will be no smoking allowed inside the building.
To start with, they plan to be open 11am to 8pm, Tuesday and Wednesday; and 11am to 9pm on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Parking and entrances to the establishment will be both in front of and behind the building. As for paying for your orders, the Two Brothers will have a POS card system that ties into their ordering system. There will be a customer-facing screen to review orders while they are placed. Once the establishment opens, food can be ordered and picked up at the counter, or phoned in for pick-up by calling 607-659-4455.
