ThePink Ladies were out in force on Friday 21st October to mark World breast cancer awareness month.

The event was another great success, once again organised in conjunction with the management of Zenia Boulevard who give such wonderful support to the AACC cancer charity.

The Pink Ladies had a Tombola store to help raise funds and the people of the Costa Blanca once again showed their generosity by donating to this very worthwhile cause.

There was live music provided by Project Duo, Simon Jackson MBE, The Blues Brothers (Alfie & Lee), Margaret Macdonald making her first appearance here on the Costa Blanca and Sam and Neil Baker (of Tre Amici from X factor) who flew in direct from the UK to perform.

Simon Morton from Sunshine FM hosted the day as well as keeping the crowd entertained with his Elvis impression.

Special thanks also to the guys from R&L Entertainment for their assistance with the afternoon’s activities.

The theme of the day was "Early Detection" which, as finding cancer early, can significantly improve the chance of a full recovery, and is so very important.

Needless to say, on the day, Maria and her Pink Ladies were making appointments for the AACC Early Detection cancer screening program.

Together with a 500 euro donation from Zenia Boulevard the event raised almost 2000 euro, all of which will be donated to the AACC.

Reprieve for Orihuela Costa Go Kart Track

The owner of the Orihuela Costa go-kart track and restaurant, adjacent to the N-332,has called off the demonstration that was scheduled to take place outside the Orihuela City Town Hall today (Monday),following the council’s climbdown of the forced reparcelling of the land that the Go Karts currently occupy.

José Luis Sánchez has said that he has been told, although only verbally at this stage, that the forced reparcelling is going to be withdrawn so for now the karts "will continue to operate".He added that he also hopes that the parties can reach and agreement so that the Go Kart track can be permanently maintained.

The planned demonstration, using the slogan "Less housing and more services",was to protest against the haphazard urban planning policy of the Orihuela City Council in the Costa area, which prioritises the unbridled construction of housing, without any attempt to meet the needs of the necessary infrastructure, among which he includes the leisure requirements for Costa residents.

The backdown of the Orihuela Council,if confirmed, will no doubt be linked to one of the many objections and allegations that Sánchez has presented to the subdivision process: the municipality did not publish - or at least it cannot find the documentary proof that it did - the publication in the official bulletin of the province,or the approval in 1997 by the plenary,of the partial plan that shows a change of use, which is also included in the General Plan of 1994.

Sánchez also states that there are many other administrative and processing deficiencies that completely invalidate the subsequent processing: from the approval of the urbanisation plan in 2004 and its modification in 2007.

The go-kart track has been operating with a municipal license for more than 45 years in the same location, complying with all acoustic regulations, and the owner points out, that it is totally irresponsible that the municipality "is currently attempting to justify a modification to the General Plan to provide more land for building,in areas that are already saturated with housing" on the Orihuela Costa.

Only recently the track owner denounced the Torrevieja builder,Marcos y Bañuls SL,the owners of the adjoining land,to the courts "for malicious damage to it’s electrical power supply,by preventing engineers from entering the area to effect repairs "an act of sabotage to the lighting towers that left the company without electricity supply,” which he called "a campaign of harassment that has gradually seen the reduction of its business area."

But now, with the recent assurances that Sánchez has received from the Orihuela Council,he hopes that the popular facility will be allowed to remain open with the abandonment also of the forced reparcelling project.

He added that with 30 staff who depend on him for their livelihoods it is also good news for employment in the area.

Pomegranate Picking Season Kicks Off

The first pomegranates from the Mollar Granada Denomination (DO) have been picked this week, with Elche CF goalkeeper, Edgar Badía, making the first ceremonial cut of the fruit.

The event was held at the Casa Gran d'Asprella in the district of Las Bayas. This year a reduction of around 30% is expected due to the weather conditions that have been experienced with rains and extreme heat.

With all this, producers foresee a production of between 35 and 40 million kilos, compared to 50 tons last year.

The mayor, Carlos González, and the president of the Provincial Council, Carlos Mazón, have valued this essential product of the Camp d'Elx and have encouraged the population to

increase the consumption of the “DO” to support the brand and the product on the market.

All have recognized the protection that obtaining the DO seal has meant for the Granada Mollar de Elche and the agricultural sector of Camp d'Elx.

The change of use is justified by "the need for more Commercial Developments on the coast.”

33,000 M2 OF UNDEVELOPED LAND RECLASSIFIED FOR COMMERCIAL USE ON ORIHUELA COSTA

Followinga request by two companies, the Orihuela City Council is proposing a modification of the General Urban Development Plan (PGOU) to create the El Barranco zone, "given the amount of residential properties that there are in the area and the few services".

The urban project is located to the right of the Ctra de Villamartín, across the AP7 motorway from Zenia Boulevard. The Council is processing a specific modification of the PGOU to reclassify an area of non-developable land into a developable one , the E-3 "El Barranco" sector in Orihuela Costa, which it has now displayed to public information for 45 days, through its electronic headquarters, so that objections can be presented.

It is an area of ??33,304 square meters that the promoter intends to be used for tertiary use in the surroundings of Zenia Boulevard. Specifically, the project, will have a building area just two storeys high, and will be is located between Calle Pimienta and Calle Clavo, Ctra de Villamartín and the Los Dolses urbanisation.

The modification, which must be submitted to the plenary session and then obtain the final approval of the Department of Town Planning, explains that the proposal is focused on "correcting the significant deficit" in this type of development that exists in the area "given the amount of land that is already in residential use and the few services", so that 49% of the surface area is designated for commercial use, and 51% for the implementation of social activities, including 5% for public facilities and 10% for green areas.

The change of use is justified by "the need for commercial developments on the coast due to the high population density".

The justification insists that tourism is "the fundamental activity, the main engine of development and source of wealth" of Orihuela Costa, so "it must better commit to a model of residential, leisure and commercial tourism development".

This urban planning process comes after the request in June 2020 by the company Ciudad Quesada Service Station and

the Real Estate Developer Espiral de Inversiones, following an environmental evaluation by the promoting companies. Last May, the Ministry issued a favourable report considering that "it will have no significant effects on the environment". Thus, there is no evidence that there are any protected species, nor will it affect the Natura 2000 Network and fauna reserves.

However, it identifies nine conditions, among them "the scarcity of water, so follow-up reports on the availability of such resources must be provided.

The treatment of wastewater is another consideration although the proposal is viable, according to the Public company responsible for Wastewater Sanitation of the Valencian Community, but it must meet 16 additional requirements. Not surprisingly, the company once again refers to the inadequacy of the Orihuela Costa treatment.

The amended plan also includes an economic sustainability report that determines an increase in public income due to municipal taxes and fees, having "a positive impact on the municipal treasury," although additional public expenditure will include expenses of approximately 35,000 euros per year for the maintenance of road infrastructure, green areas and public lighting.

PIOC PIOC seek partnership with CLAR CLAR O O to fight Local Elections

Theresidents of Orihuela Costa have, and still are today, suffering from an appalling lack of services, compared to all the other districts under the control of Orihuela. This cannot be blamed on the population size as Orihuela Costa has inhabitants in far greater numbers than many of the neighbouring villages, but they have full control of their own administrative affairs.

I fail to see how a city at 30 kilometres distance, separated by countryside and two independent towns, can lay administrative claims on the coastal area. Surely a location with a population of 33,227 is of sufficient size to have its own municipal council, and elect councillors to that assembly who actually reside in the area, and can truly represent the region they live in.

It is amazing that towns and villages far smaller have control of their administrative affairs. Just a few kilometres from Orihuela Costa, the town of Pilar de la Horadada, with a population of less than 25,000, gained independence from the strangle hold of Orihuela in 1986.

Since that time the town has thrived and the amenities available to the residents have grown enormously. Funding raised from the area is actually spent on it’s residents contributing to

municipal income.

There is ABSOLUTLEY no comparison between the public amenities in Pilar de la Horadada and those in Orihuela Costa; the former is a very well-resourced and thriving area.

55% of Orihuela revenue comes from the Coast, roughly 5560 million euros a Year; Orihuela Costa also attracts 90% of tourism; what do the other 26 villages in the municipality bring to the table…… NOTHING. The reality is, that the residents of Orihuela Costa shoulder the burden alone of supporting the others. The truth is that without Orihuela Costa the remainder would not survive.

San Miguel del Salinas, population approximately 8,000; Montesinos, population 5,500; Dolores, population 7,300; Catral, population 8,600, are all self-governing and self-determining, independent administrative areas.

The services provided in all these areas clearly outstrip those available to Orihuela Costa residents. Until the citizens of Orihuela Costa have power over the development and advancement of their own locality they will continue to receive little more than scraps from the Orihuela table.

Independence or devolved power for Orihuela Costa is the

way forward. This is the only way that will ensure that services and amenities appropriate to the size of the population are provided.

For too long the Costa has been marginalised, neglected, and raided for the benefit of Orihuela. It is now time that the residents are provided with the services that they have been desperately waiting for.

PIOC has continually extended the olive branch to CLARO and it’s membership. Let’s unite and fight the next elections together. The ball is now in their court and so too is the future of Orihuela Costa.

UNITED WE ARE STRONGER DIVIDED ORIHUELA COSTA WILL FAIL

TORREVIEJA NOW HAS FREE ELECTRIC CHARGING POINTS

Lastweek saw a presentation of 4 recharging points for electric vehicles (each with 2 chargers), finally allowing visitors and residents in the town to charge their electric vehicles.

These are 4 semi-fast stations that can serve 2 vehicles simultaneously and that, for the time being, will be free for users.

The Mayor, Eduardo Dolón, together with the commercial manager of IBERDROLA in Alicante and Murcia, Juan Carlos Brotons, saw the start-up of the four charging stations, which has involved an investment of over 50,000 euro for the assembly, connection, communication, supply and commissioning with remote connection.

The new charging points are located on: Calle Caballero de Rodas, nº 27.

Calle Ucrania, municipal parking area of the Torrevieja Hospital.

Avenida Monge y Bielsa, parking area of the “Tavi y Carmona” Sports Palace.

Calle Mayor, at the height of Plaza Encarnación Puchol de La Mata.

In order to access each station, users must make a reservation through the Iberdrola Public Recharge application (the only application in Spain that incorporates verified information on all electric vehicle chargers), available both on Android and iOS, which allows you to geolocate recharging points with your mobile phone, book and pay, although in the case of Torrevieja it will be free.

The recharging stations are Type 2 (semi-rapid) with the possibility of simultaneously charging two vehicles, through two sockets with a maximum power of 22 Kw in each one, with a limited maximum

recharging time of 2 hours for each vehicle. Also add that the parking spaces for recharging will be exclusively for the parking of electric vehicles during the time of use, parking being prohibited once the 2 hours are exceeded.

The mayor stressed that the commissioning of these first recharging points aims to promote electric mobility, thus reducing greenhouse gas emissions and continuing to advance in achieving the sustainable development goals set out in the 2030 Agenda.

Torrevieja is yet to announce where the Low Emission Zones will be, another environmental requirement, which must come into force by the end of this year.

MASK REFUSER SLASHES BUS TYRE

A man has been found guilty after he had been refused access to a bus in Alicante for refusing to wear a mask, and subsequently took his anger out on the vehicle by slashing a tyre.

The crime took place in the early hours of October 7 on a bus that connects the Virgen del Remedio neighbourhood with the city centre.

"I repeat again that I am not going to put on the mask," the defendant replied when the driver reminded him that to use the bus he had to comply with the law, which currently requires the use of a

Given the detainee's refusal, the driver closed the bus door in his face. Immediately afterwards, the aggressor took out a 10-centimetre blade knife that he carried in his pocket and stuck it in the right front wheel of the public transport vehicle.

The defendant pleaded guilty to a crime of damage. According to the agreement reached between his lawyer and the prosecutor, the man was sentenced to pay a fine of four euro a day for four months.

To this amount must be added the 483 euro that he will aalso have to pay to cover the costs of repairing the damaged wheel.

The case has reached the Criminal Court of Alicante, which is in charge of ensuring compliance with the sentence.

Estate Agents face Legal Clean up

Afterdecades of operating with little regulation, estate agents in the Valencia Region are set for a legal clean up, as new legislation comes into force this month that requires any individual who operates as an estate agent to be listed on the government’s register, for which they must satisfy strict requirements to be accepted and to work as a property broker.

On 16 August, the bulletin of the Valencia region published the legislation, DECREE

98/2022, of July 29, which would enter into force two months from the publication date.

In order to comply with the legislation, as of 16 October 2022, all real estate agents who want to sell property in the provinces of Alicante, Valencia or Castellon will have the obligation to be registered in the Registry of Real Estate Brokerage Agents of the Valencian Community, the Registro de Agentes de Intermediación Inmobiliaria.

Registration is mandatory for all individuals

operating as in this capacity although there will be a transition period of 12 months for them to meet the requirements.

In order to register, the individual must have an establishment open to the public, unless the services are provided by electronic or telematic means.

People who provide services exclusively by electronic or telematic means must have a physical address in the Valencian Community.

There are also requirements to undergo professional training for which there are 3 methods.

The first option is to be in possession of the official title of Real Estate Agent by proving membership of the corresponding Official College of Real Estate Agents (API). In this case, the school will carry out the registration

process.

The second option is for an individual to be in possession of a university degree belonging to the branch of Social and Legal Sciences, Engineering or Architecture.

The third and final option for individuals is to attend an academic training course and examination in Spanish, of at least 200 teaching hours in real estate, related to mediation, advice and service management, whether in person, distance or virtual, issued by public teaching centres, private universities or centres whose statutes include training.

They must also be able to provide professional civil liability insurance or any other financial guarantee that covers, throughout the European Union, the responsibilities that may arise from professional negligence.

Ifyou look like your passport photograph, you aren't well enough to travel.

I've been ill in some really nice places. Often it seems impossible to go on holiday without coming down with something or other.

I would have thought there were sufficient ailments available at home to save us the extra expense of replacing lost airline baggage and buying backdated medical insurance at double the price from a man in a bar in Sorrento.

Or was that just me? Either way, I'll never go back to Sorrento.

But no, we jet off -- or used to -- for Mexico, with visions of giant stuffed donkeys, sombreros and mariachi bands -- is that why Montezuma likes to take revenge on us?

Take it he did, on me, and it wasn't till I reached Acapulco a week later that I had any fun, thanks mainly to its water purification system.

In many countries you remember wonderful meals you had, Eiffel Towers or Great Pyramids you climbed, or trying to out-stare a reclining Sphinx in Giza. But memories may also be mainly of maladies.

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever "may cause loss of part of an arm or a leg."

Is there a choice? The Rocky Mountains are in Colorado, which means "coloured red," as are the spots on the part of your arm or leg that remains, but otherwise the affliction has little to do with that state -and might just as easily have been called Simply Red or Red Hot Chili Peppers. Still, I per-

sonally would give the Rockies a wide berth while all my limbs are intact.

And let's face it, for ease of pronunciation if nothing else, which would a newsreader prefer saying, "Omsk Fever'' or "Acute Systemic Schistosomiasis"? I rest my twisted tongue. No matter how many pre-departure immunizations we submit to, the odd bug always seems to find some wriggle room -- a Uruguayan toenail nibbler or whatever.

Some great philosopher, Wittgenstein, or perhaps some other Witt, wanted us to say things so clearly that our meaning couldn't be mistaken, at least I think that's what he said.

Personally, I have always been of the opinion that some things are better left unsaid. Chief among which are the words "bon voyage."

San Fulgencio presents it’s Seventh Tapas Route

Thetown is busy preparing for the seventh edition of its Tapas Route. The gastronomic event will take place on the 28th, 29th and 30th of October in many bars and restaurants.

The Mayor, José Sampere, and the Councillor for Tourism, Darren Parmenter, have now announced the ten establishments, from both

the town centre and the urbanisation area, that will take part. "We are back for another year with this tapas route which, after seven editions, has become one of the most anticipated events in the municipality and one of the most popular," said Parmenter. A drink and a tapa will cost just 3.50 euros.

The event is organised by the Town Council

through the Department of Tourism with the aim of boosting the hotel and catering industry and the local economy as well as boosting the leisure offer of the town. It will also "promote our traditional gastronomic culture to our foreign residents", said the councillor.

The participating establishments included in the route will be Sami's Café, bar L'Ajuntament, bar David, Fiestas Belga, bar Santa Monica, bar-tapería La Rosa Negra, Olive and Joe's, Em's Dreams, bar Enaybe and Cervecería Bavarius, where the participating public can collect their 'tapaporte' when the event begins with which to stamp and evaluate their visit and opt for the different prizes.

The Town Hall will provide free bus routes between the town centre and the urbanisation, "to facilitate the participation of those who do not have transport and to promote road safety".

The bus service will start on Friday 28th from 20:00 to 00:00 hours, and Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th, from 12:00 to 19:00 hours and from 20:00 to 00:00 hours.

Mayor, José Sampere, wanted to invite all citizens to participate in this event, noting that "we hope that this tapas route is to the liking of all the people San Fulgencio, and also of all the people who visit us during these days, to enjoy our town and the richness of our cuisine”.

[Dis]cushions concerning a crowded couch …

Someof you may say, ‘that fellow is way too touchy for my liking’, or ‘hasn’t he little to bother him’, after you read this week’s rant. But, dear readers, have you never experienced the feeling of something irritating you for a very long time without being able to put your finger exactly on the problem? It just eats away at you until someday, the root cause of your unhappiness hits you like a bolt out of the blue.

This is what happened to me last week – and I did get some temporary relief, which I shall tell you about in a moment.

Clearly the niggling irritant has been present for some time before I finally cracked. I don’t know if it was getting worse, or I am getting more contrary, but by its very nature, there was always going to be a cumulative build up.

My problem is cushions! My house is full of cushions; all sorts of cushions from all over the world. There are round cushions, square cushions, scatter cushions, silk & satin cushions, cuddly cushions and floral cushions. You could sit down on Jaw’s teeth, the island of Cuba, the back of a Canadian Black Bear, or into the face of a beautiful Spanish Flamingo Dancer.

Some came here as full-blown cushions; others as cushion covers to be filled with, feathers, wool, polyester, and even stuffed with paper fragments. Now I am being crowded out of my own house by cushions!

Every armchair, sofa, settee, chair and bench in my house is so packed with cushions that I have nowhere comfortable to sit down – or at least I didn’t until the solution dawned on me and I got that short surge of temporary relief that I told you about above.

Mrs Youcantbeserious appears to love cushions: I say, ‘appears’, because this problem has never been discussed in Casa Comaskey - until after I found the temporary relief last week. This is how the row started:

Mug of coffee in one hand and piece of buttered brack in the other, I opened the room door with my foot and backed my butt towards the settee, where the intention was that I would jockey myself into a sitting position for the kick-off between

*Author, entrepreneur and newspaper columnist, Bernie Comaskey, now spends most of his time on a farm in Ireland; but he retains his strong links with the Costa Blanca.

Liverpool and Rangers. Here I found that there wasn’t any room for me to sit down – with cushions piled on top of each other, where any man of the house should feel fully entitled to be sitting.

It is precisely at that moment that I became enlightened as to both the significance of the problem and the solution to my long-suffering affliction. I dramatically deposited the coffee and cake on the coffee-table … spilling a small amount of coffee on the cross-word puzzle the wife was working on: Then I ‘fecked’ every cushion within reach onto the middle of the floor. There were 7 of them – just in case you are wondering.

Whoever designed the soft seats in my house knew their job and did it well. It is easy to get comfortable in them. And nowhere is there a label saying, ‘fit another cushion on this spot’ or ‘you need a cushion behind your back’. The chairs are fine as they are – and don’t require to be filled with cushions!

GARDEN FELIX Beautifule Sun Rose that attracts Butterflies

Sometimes known as the sun rose, or moss rose, the Portulaca is a truly beautiful, easy to grow low growing ground cover type plant.

Growing in a mixture of colours of pink, red, yellow, orange, deep lavender, cream and white.

Portulaca flowers will tolerate many kinds of soil, but prefer sandy, well-drained soil and

love the full sunlight, ideal to grow on the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida.

Suitable for containers and hanging baskets, the portulaca plants will grow out and over the edges of the containers, which make a grand display of their truly striking, vibrant coloured blooms.

These plants are excellent for their high heat and drought tolerance

Now, you all know me and that I am not a violent man or an abusive husband! Since I gave myself the temporary relief from the problem, an

and will easily seed and spread themselves very well.

However, you may need to control them to keep portulaca plants from becoming invasive to areas where they are not wanted.

The cylindrical foliage of the portulaca flower retains moisture very well, meaning regular watering is not needed. Just a light watering will do, as their root-zone is very shallow.

When planting, it's not necessary to cover the seeds at all, as they only need the sun to sprout and grow.

These wonderful plants will also help attract butterflies to your gardens.

impasse has been reached and I need some of you to intercede on my behalf … please!

At half time in the match, I took my mug to the sink, had a pee, washed my hands and returned to my seat … to find all the cushions back on the settee! There was just enough room for me to sit at the end of the seat. Mrs Youcantbeserious sat in an armchair at the other end, the crossword on her lap and that malevolent look on her face. Yes, Gorls, I just sat down quietly … If Angela McNamara or ‘Dear Frankie’ were still around I could write to one of them and ask for advice. ‘Dear Frankie, I think my wife is suffering from a bad case of cushion fetish, what should I do?’

At the end of the good weather, I cleared all the outdoor furniture over to the big shed. It didn’t take long … apart from the cushions! Cushions belonging to the egg-chair, the lounger, the benches … the full of a transport box!

I’m almost finished here now and I’ll head up to bed: A bed with two pillows on my side and two pillows on the side of my beloved. You are not going to believe this, but dividing the four pillows, right in the centre is another bloody cushion …!

Don’t Forget

When a wise man argues with his wife he says nothing.

With almost 150 people resplendent in all their finery the evening got underway with a reception in the grand entrance hall where the RBL Concert Band, directed by David Last, played for arriving guests.

The main ballroom was packed as members and guests enjoyed themselves into the early hours with music provided by ‘Amnesia’. There was a short interlude in which the audience was entertained by Stevie Spit MBE and a wonderful raffle which raised over 850 euro.

Mike Wyatt, the Worshipful Master of the Dama de Elche Masonic Lodge No 163, who was attending the ball with fellow Lodge Members, announced a donation to the Poppy Appeal of almost 600 euro from his charity fund, with a further profit of 400 euro raised from ticket sales and the monies raised from the raffle.

'Agala charity concert was held last Saturday evening 15th.October in the prestigious Don Pancho Hotel, Benidorm. The Royal British Legion Concert Band together with Stevie Spit, Crescendo Choir and the Jersey Boys performed a spectacular show to a full house.

Jack Kemp, Spain District North Chairman welcomed everyone to this charity event and spoke about the importance of the Poppy Appeal Launch which had taken place earlier in the day. The band opened proceedings with the very popular Radetzky March.

Crescendo Choir, under their musical director Irene Oliva, performed 'Sing' 'Stronger Together' 'Make you feel my Love' and the rousing Mansions of the Lord. The Jersey Boys closed the first half and opened the second half with a non-stop medley of hits, very enthusiastically received by the audience.

There was a good selection of music from the band including The Greatest Showman most ably sung by Stevie, a Marvin Hamlisch and Abba selection, the evening finished with Tchaikovsky's Greatest Hits, including the 1812 Overture for which the band received a standing ovation and did an encore.

The performance was once more compared by Stevie Spit and concluded with Sunset and the respective national anthems. It was certainly an evening to remember'.

NATO’s Tactical Leadership visits the Orihuela Costa RBL

Wing Commander Jon Millington from NATO’s Tactical Leadership Programme (TLP) at Los Llanos Air Base, Albacete, was the guest at Thursday’s meeting of the Orihuela Costa and District Branch of the RBL.

Speaking to a full room of members and veterans from all three services, Jon spoke about the 43-year history of TLP, how it has become the focal point for NATO’s allied air forces tactical training, and the associated knowledge and leadership skills that are considered critical if NATO is to effectively face today’s tactical air challenges.

He explained that the force is composed of personnel from the 10 NATO member nations participating in the

programme, the main objective (Mission) of which is ‘to increase the effectiveness of allied tactical air forces through the development of leadership skills, mission planning, briefing, tactical flying and debriefing skills, and doc-

trinal/conceptual initiatives’.

Wing Commander Millington’s presentation concluded with a short film which showed footage of the airbase, it’s aircraft and TLP graduates in action, after which both he and his

wife, Amanda, received a warm round of applause as they were presented with a small gift from branch members.

The main photo shows John being welcomed to the branch by the Vice Chairman, Eddie Coleman.

CALLING ALL WOMEN OF SAN MIGUEL

San Miguel town hall is about to launch a new series of fitness activities specifically aimed at the women of the municipality. This is a new season of Body Fit and Pilates for women, which offers a choice of two different programs:

Body fit is a very complete workout where you will combine aerobic activities and muscle exercises. You will work muscle group strength and toning.

Pilates is where you will strengthen body and mind, unifying muscle dynamism with mind control, relaxation and breathing. You will combine gymnastics and yoga techniques.

If this sounds tempting, then we have good news, because the events are free to women who live in San Miguel. The bad news is that places are limited, so you will have to be quick to sign up.

Enrolment opens on Monday 24 October, from 8:00 a.m., and can be done via the Social Services department at the town hall.

The event has been organised with support from Social Services and Equality Council, the equality area of Diputación de Alicante and Mancomunidad la Vega.

INFILTRATION - TO DESTROY A GOVERNMENT

Itwas a cold and windy day in the UK in December two thousand and nineteen,on the twelfth to be exact. It was the day which laid the basis for a political circus to start a few months’later.

It was also the day when Boris Johnson defied the critics and won the General Election with an impressive majority,by reversing many Labour held seats into questionable blue.

Perhaps the unpleasant blustery cold conditions of the day were a forecast of what would happen in the following months after what should have been a momentous occasion for the Conservative Party, when sadly,it became a ‘free for all’uncontrollable mess.

Why? Possibly because the days of pure honesty and trust have vanished along with morality, respect and loyalty, all replaced by greed and me,me,me!

For a government to be able to act,its members must give total support to the leader, which is essential. That is not to say in a dictatorial way,but the precise way through discussion within the group.

The devotion to the cause of governing by all its members is paramount if progress is to be made.In a democracy where the difference of opinion is sought in the decision making process, anyone who has opposing thoughts should accept the judgement of the group.

‘The Spy Catcher’book is the true story of how the Secret Service worked in the United Kingdom during the cold war and others. The book was banned because it was thought to relay too many secrets, although it was available in other parts of the world.

In it,Peter Wright the author, and at one time a man who was high in the circles of the clandestine operation, describes the infiltration of enemy facilities. This method of causing dismay and destruction was also carried out by the resistance movements on the continent during World War Two.

Are we looking at something similar, but on a lesser scale, where a governing party, right of centre, has members who think totally different to the history of the faction.

Or,probably stating the obvious, the powerful people who objected to Brexit are using that influence to destroy the

workings of an elected administration. What we have here is similar to a tug of war team, whose members love being selected to be on the rope but don’t want to do any of the pulling.

It is an extraordinarily difficult to cast off the opinions and learnings of one’s upbringing. The caring of the family and its thoughts from a young age has a direct bearing on the decisions of life.I cannot help thinking that being a Member of Parliament for a party which is right wing in its thinking must be counter to a person who has been brought up with a different ideology,as per the change from the red wall to blue.

Perhaps that is why the party does not seem to pull as one in the same direction.

However,I think it goes far deeper than that, where, after forty or more years during which the UK was seriously linked to Brussels, without going into the whys and the wherefores of Brexit, the divisions after the vote to leave are deep and unforgiving.

Never mind the fact that the British people voted to leave,a decision not acceptable by the powerful Remain lobby who have the means and the desire to reverse what they see as the wrong direction, and no doubt damaging to their way of life.

What was important to this faction, those

in and out of the government, was to be rid of the Prime Minister,Boris Johnson, the man capable of progressing the Brexit phenomenon,so he was accused with a barrage of words of lying to Parliament - in my view no more than sound bites as most politician do,nothing more than his view of the future.

And of course, the ‘Partygate’nonsense by referring to it over and over again made it into something it was not.

Where is the party of Government now? In tatters.A mixture of members who have their own agendas backed by money which would prefer total change.

It is also hampered by a Civil Service reluctant to follow instructions and capable of reversing the Administrations orders.Hence, very little progress with the Government’s requirements.

There is also the question of thousands and thousands of migrants arriving on the shores almost daily, with the authority tangled up in EU Human Rights Laws that they have little answer for.

The new Prime Minister,Liz Truss, was thrown into the deep end of leadership with very little time to prepare for it,so I can understand that her administration is not up to scratch, and mistakes have been made.

However,is she the right person to con-

trol the Conservative party? Maybe, but her history has not been one of devotion to its course,as at one time she was Liberal, and her family is in the opposing corner - and I wonder if she is another implant.

More frightening is where the stewardship of the country is going.People younger than thirty-five would see the present administration set up with three parliaments outside Westminster, and each city having its controlling Mayor,as normal. This came about when Tony Blair’s executive, twenty years ago, divided the Union up into separate governing parts.

The power at Westminster shrunk when the other parliaments came into being and the office of Mayor was giving far more autonomy,so much so there are some towns and cities in England which are as English as the Middle East.

More frightening, with a government that has little or no authority,we are seeing the total collapse of the United Kingdom itself,as it is slowly taken over by the established settlers, and a thousand years of Britishness is at risk of vanishing into a very different type of organisation.

Take care

Freakie Taverners v Domino's Desperados

Some powerful scoring from Despo's in the 1st leg from Paul Chick 100, Chris Oates 122, Mike Langan 104, proved fruitless as a Sharon Frain 125 and an Ernie Willis out, gave the hosts a surprise lead.

Tipsy Tiaras v Tipsy Toppers

With the Freakie Taverners having been plucked out first to play the Desperados, the odds of both the Tipsy Toad teams being drawn to play one another in the KO cup preliminaries were more than 30 - 1, but as Boris Johnson says, ´´Them's the Breaks´´.

So, a local derby and indeed battle of the sexes took place on the fields of El Galan. Dressed in identical uniforms, the soldiers of the Tipsy

up with rations of pizza, chips and salad.

Fortified, Gunner Galloway (95 x 2, 2-D1) cried ´victory´ for the lads despite an impressive counter offensive from Wendy Hayward.

The lads could then relax, and they added to their tally with 3 more wins, courtesy of Maiden

RESULTS FOR 20TH

KO CUP PRELIMINARY ROUND

Freakie Taverners7-4 Dominos Desperados Tipsy Toad Tiaras 1-7 Tipsy Toad Toppers

Just two preliminary K.O. Cup matches this week, both winners Freakie Taverners and the Tipsy Toppers joining the main draw in November, for 1st round matches proper on November 24th.

On the subject of the main draw, co league sponsors, One Way Services' Matt Smith, has suggested this be conducted live on Facebook, the committee of course, excitedly compliant, anticipating a future in the film industry.

More news about this "ground breaking" project at a later date.

Potential make up artists should forward appropriate credentials / references in due course to Paul Durrant c/o Leader newspaper.

This was quickly doubled via a John Boden D2. Skipper Steve Harding, hitting a 90+ and double for the visitors.

Noel Kenny extended Freakies lead in the opening pairs, Cathy Wallbanks and the experienced Ray Hayes 85,85, D2, making it 3-2 in favour of Freakies. Boden found plenty of trebles in the remaining pairs, but it was partner Frain on D4 giving their side a 4-2 half time lead.

Harding's decent form continued after the break closing on D14, to keep Despos in the game. Willis regained the hosts 2 leg advantage with a 95 and fine 78 out, over Chick.

The "see sawing" continued Hayes finding D4, the score now 5-4. It was to be Despos last leg as Annette Dobson D6, Boden the tie winner and Frain a 40 out, finished off the remaining three for 8-4. POTM - Boden - Hayes.

armies tested each other´s training and preparation with a cautious start which could have seen the first two triples go either way, both sides having half a dozen turns to take the first ground.

Andy Rutter (100, D1) took the first scalp, and Lee Maiden (100, 85 x 2, D2) took the 2nd despite some feisty efforts from Pat Schofield (141) and Denise Green (110).

Toppers Clan-Leader Baz Schofield´s rallying cry of ´Here we go!, Here we go!, Here we go!´ didn´t have quite its usual confidence. None-theless, the lads took the third triples (Hugh Galloway, D8) and first doubles, Paddy Winterbourne (D20), the check-outs starting to get a little more convincing.

Tiara Tracey Simpson AKA Psycho (for good reason) isn´t one to run away from a fight and she took it to the lads, all guns blazing in the 2nd doubles, taking out 62 with S6-D8-D20 earning her the POTM medal (no one daring to question the route she took to victory).

Phil de Lacy (D2) took the score to 1 - 5 to the Toppers.

Rifleman Rutter sniped a double top in the first singles to take the Toppers tantalisingly close to the crucial 7th point, before the Naafi opened

(D20), Steph Simpson (20 - D10) and Graham Solomons (D10).

The Tiaras had one last chance to leave the field with dignity and did so when Sapper Simone de Lacy (92x2) checked out on D19.

Monday 18th and 2 home games to play/watch and after saying last week how I look forward to Winter, I am stuck at home with a lousy head cold, so the report is based solely on the result sheets.

Not the best reading but a long way short of disastrous. In the morning our Explorers played the Chestnuts from Greenlands and lost 8-4. All 4 points came from Anne Stone, Steve Syddell and Alex Whyte they were the top scoring rink with a 35-14 victory, which was also sufficient to carry the shot difference 83-82.

The afternoon game was our Pathfinders against Country Bowls which produced a mirror image of the morning's result with us winning 8-4 and gaining the shot difference of 81-79, our top winning trip being Audrey Birch, Len Daniels and Alex Morrice with a 20-12 victory.

Well done all to win the shot difference by so little in both games reflects on you all.

Our internal Animal League started this week, and I would like to start by introducing the teams:

Magpies:Pete Parsons, Trevor Stemp, Norman Ship, Margaret Finlayson.

Swans: Alan Birch, David

Joynes, Reg Jackson, Jeff Halfhide

Robins: Alex Morrice, Audrey Birch, Lorita Rae, Mike Smith.

Sparrows: Garth Slater, Barbara Foreshaw, Cliff Rawlingson, Marilyn Fryatt.

Puffins: John Rae, Janet Parsons,Trevor Hancock, Tom Spencer.

Eagles: Maureen Kidd, Martha Reynolds,Carol Smith, Lesley Joynes.

Should be a interesting league as after 1 game played, we only had 1 undefeated team and that's those cockney Sparrows with 6 points.

Friday 21st and our Sharks were away to Greenlands Cedars, which was also a return fixtures of Explorers versus Chestnuts which we lost on Monday 4-8, today revenge was very sweet with a 10-2 win away at Greenlands.

The one rink we lost was only by 3 shots and our top winning rink was, Steve Douglas, Mike Smith and Margaret Finlayson with a 23-15 win.

Overall shots were 89-69. An excellent result. Sorry no report received from the Seagulls, you will have to wait until next week for their results.

We always expect a close match against VB, especially with this mixed format; which is why it’s so challenging & frustrating. All the matches were hard fought and even the losing teams kept going, to try and keep the shot difference close and that certainly worked!.

However we weren’t expecting a result as close as this!!

LMGS MATCH REPORT

Altorreal Golf Course was the venue for this weekís game for the members of the La Marina Golf Society. The Mike Barbour trophy was competed for with a Texas Scramble and the camaraderie between the players made for a most enjoyable day. There were three nearest the pins up for grabs, on hole 5 was Graeham Buchanan, hole 8 was Garry Garbett, and hole 10 was Paul Saxton.

All five teams were very close with their scores, however, the runners-up with a score of 74 were Graeham Buchanan, Jimmy Scott, Iain Lyall and Frank Cullen. The dayís winners with a score of 73 therefore, winning the Mike Barbour trophy were Gordon McLagan, Tony Moore, Bill Allen and Lesley Cullen.

CK1 Ladybirds secure a 3rd victory this week, keeping them in 2nd place overall. Donna Ralph, Sue Christie, Sharon O´Rourke, Kirsty Green, Sandra Crabbe (Cpt), Angela Mullen, Sue Cam

As anyone who has played the game of golf for some length of time can confirm it can be the biggest test of patience you will ever face doing something that you are supposed to be enjoying and at some point in time we have all felt like just walking off the course and throwing the clubs in the river.

However, seriously, are there any acceptable reasons for actually walking off the golf course?

A recent study indicates that the following are at least plausible reasons for leaving the golf course (although it you had tried some of these with my dad you would be lucky to play with him again)

Our 11th President's prize was celebrated yesterday at our home course of La Serena. We had a field of 92 players participating and a good day was had by all. The course is in fantastic condition and playing from the whites made it that bit more challenging. Many thanks to Miguel, Bruno, Vanessa and team, Karolina, Paul and Michael for all your help on the day.

To Camillus and his assistants, you made it look like a seamless operation even when the app had a nap, coupled with Terry falling ill with Covid and Philip could not make it on the day.

THADER SPEND THEIR AFTERNOON CHASING SHADOWS

Thankfully, a string of magnificent saves kept the scoreline down to just three.

Thader rarely looked capable of providing a response, with their best chance of the first half, a stoppage time strike, by Quino.

But with a hat trick, Crevellente’s Guille was on fire. Two of his 3 were prodded home from close range, but in the manner of a true striker the no 9 was always where he needed to be.

Thader in their Centenary kit....but the line up was as good as it got!

A hint of suspicion for the first, in no way detracted from his fine performance.

Indeed, but for yet another marvellous save by Thader MOM Chema, Guille would have bagged his 4th midway through the 2nd period. The addition of club president Lloyd added a little bite to the visitors defence, clearly evident by a booking within 5 minutes of his onfield arrival, but the team were sadly lacking in both urgency and determination.

Three

goals down by half time, this was not the Thader that we have been used to watching during the early part of the season. Frankly the first half perform-

ance was awful with their only contribution being a share of a scrappy opening period.

Sporting their new ‘all black’ centenary kit at the freshly relaid Enrique

Moralles Stadium, it was the man in pink, keeper Chema, that was earning all the plaudits, without whom the damage at the interval would have been a whole lot worse.

Krusaders 6-4, The Rancheros returned a 6-4 win against Hals Heroes, with The Jokers chalking up a 6-3 win against The Flaggers.

Thader were marginally better after the break, courtesy of 4 second half substitutions, but it was still the home side that enjoyed the majority of the game.

This was probably the visitors’ worst performance of the season with Raul Mora’s side largely limited to chasing shadows, particularly in the first half.

Let us hope that we see rather more next week in Sunday’s local derby against Almoradi.

The Almoradians defeated The Goof Shot Boys 7-3 in the Costa Blanca Independent Pool League Round 1 Knockout Cup to go into the hat for the second round draw on October 29.

El Raso Mixtures defeated Kennys

Cab Buddies cruised through to round two following a comfortable 8-2 win at The Pines Nuts; The Taverners defeated Full Monte Azul 6-4, with The Excellence going through, following a 6-5 win against The Young Boys.

Round 12 of the Carp-r-Us Summer/Autumn Series was fished on the Rio Segura at Jacarilla/Bigastro. Although there hadn’t been any recent rain the river was very high, running fast and very muddy so a tough match was expected. The match was won by Dave

Hutchinson, fishing his first match for a while. Dave fished peg 1 with pole and corn to take 13.16kg.

Towards the other end of the stretch, Steve Fell used a combination of pole and bread and feeder and maggot to take 6.32kg, including four small barbel- Third was the ever con-

sistent Willie Moons with 3.84kg form peg 2, just pipping Richard Crawshaw who had 3.82kg on peg 3

Disappointing Day for SAAM

The autumn racing season for SAMM sailors should have started in September but once again other events at CTD caused a delay. So everybody was really looking forward to the first races on October 9th.

PINOSO GO TOP OF REGIONAL GP 8

Pinoso CF Abagged five goals in a 5-0 win against CF Atletico Algorfa in the Valencia 1st Regional Group 8 in Saturday's only fixture to go

top of the table.

SC Torrevieja travel to Sporting Dolores CF on Sunday evening, with Racing San Miguel hosting CF Rafal and CD Montesinos hosting CD Cox.

In the 2nd Regional Group 16 Callosa Deportivo

CF Adefeated Athletic Crevillente 4-1 to go third in the table, with Crevillente dropping to 16th.

Guardamar Soccer CD took three pts with a 2-0 home win against CF Sporting Albatera to maintain top spot in the table.

Torry B edge out local rivals

Sporting Costablanca Torrevieja CF B defeated CD Horadada Thair 2-1 to jump three places into 13th, ahead of Sunday's fixtures, with Diaz and Soko netting.

CF Popular Orihuela host Atletico Benejuzar A on Sunday, Bigastro CF host Santa Pola CF B and CD Benijofar host CF United Elche A.

Full results round-up will appear online.

But, a disappointment awaited as the weather refused to cooperate. The normal start time came and went with no wind so the first race was delayed for and hour so did not start until 12.15 when a little wind had materialised.

Five boats started, one took 17 minutes to cross the start line after the gun, made minimal progress and soon retired while the other took 20 to 30 minutes to complete a lap (normally boats lap in 9/10 minutes).

The race was average lap format of an hours duration, the slowest boat only completing 2 laps, the fastest 4 laps. The winner being Shoestring Omega crewed by John Down and Jack Moss.

The wind died away to nothing so, although the second race did start it was abandoned by the race officer after 30 minutes as three boats had retired and the remaining two hadn't even reached the first mark.
