Letter  to  the  Editor Dear  Editor,  As  a  member  of  Cougar  Pride  Club,  I  was  thrilled  to  read  the  mid- summer  article  about  the  clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  activities.  Not  only  did  Melissa  and  Annie  do  a  great  job  of  articulating  the  clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  successes,  but  they  also  did  a  great  job  of  demonstrating  the  clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  passionate  engagement  of  political  and  social  issues  that  are  central  to  Washington  State  University  Vancouverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  GLBTQ  community.  The  photo  featured  by  the  paper  was  taken  at  a  conference  that  engages  in  the  â&#x20AC;&#x153;workâ&#x20AC;?  of  the  community  and  was  a  nice  way  of  demonstrating  to  prospective  Cougar  Pride  members  that  the  organization  is  more  than  just  a  social  group;Íž  we  are  a  group  engaged  in  changing  minds  and  changing  lives.  I  really  hope  that  this  article  makes  its  way  into  the  hands  of  new  students  in  the  fall.  As  the  title  explained,  Cougar  Pride  Club  is  here  to  support  everyone  in  the  campus  community.  Bravo  to  Annie  and  to  Melissa!  The  article  did,  however,  leave  me  wondering  exactly  what  we  (the  campus  community)  are  saying Â
by  designating  our  only  GLBTQ  organization  at  WSU  Vancouver  as  a  â&#x20AC;&#x153;club.â&#x20AC;?  Our  campus  diversity  website  explains  that  WSUV  â&#x20AC;&#x153;strives  to  support  all  members  of  our  community,  including  GLBTQ  (gay,  lesbian,  bisexual,  transgender,  questioning)  students,  faculty,  and  staff.â&#x20AC;?  Charging  the  support  of  our  community  to  a  club  feels  to  me  like  we  are  equating  sexuality  and  gender  expression  with  choices  like  playing  pool  or  going  hiking  or  bowling?  For  all  of  us,  our  gender  and  sexuality  are  more  than  these;Íž  they  are  part  of  who  we  are.  As  a  student  club,  Cougar  Pride  could  decide  to  meet  only  on  rare  occasions  or  at  off  times.  Given  that  we  are  a  campus  that  hosts  many  non-Âtraditional  students,  many  students  in  need  of  support  could  be  left  with  few  options  and  feeling  very  alone.  Further,  where  does  this  leave  new  students  arriving  on  campus?  Does  communal  support  really  mean  just  giving  new  students  an  email  or  web  address?  Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  get  me  wrong;Íž  Cougar  Pride  does  fabulous  work  and  the  student  turnout  at  events  has  been  amazing, Â
but  I  think  the  tasks  they  are  charged  with  are  simply  too  much  to  expect  of  a  club.  Gender  and  sexuality  impact  what  happens  in  the  classroom  and  in  professional  environments  around  campus.  Can  we  expect  a  club  to  LQĂ&#x20AC;XHQFH FODVVURRP SROLFLHV FRXUVH materials,  library  holdings,  and  faculty/staff  workspaces?  I  am  reaching  out  to  you  and  to  the  greater  WSUV  community.  WSU  Pullman  has  a  Gender  Identity/ Expression  and  Sexual  Orientation  Resource  Center;Íž  why  donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  we?  Isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  it  time  we  take  the  â&#x20AC;&#x153;clubâ&#x20AC;?  out  of  Cougar  Pride  and  establish  a  permanent  home  that  does  not  expect  unpaid  students  to  defend  the  human  rights  of  an  entire  campus  community?  Or  better  yet,  canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  we  have  both  a  club  and  an  accessible,  permanent  resource  center?  After  all,  Shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  all  Cougars,  not  just  those  who  join  a  club,  be  allied  in  support  of  WSUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  mission?  Shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  all  Cougars  have  Cougar  Pride?

an  exchange  of  competing  ideas  and  opinionsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;this  yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  senate  is  no  different.  Nevertheless,  the  newly  elected  representatives  have  formulated  key  institutional  goals  and  have  agreed  to  work  toward  them  throughout  the  year.  The  important  aspect  that  all  students  should  recognize  is  the  underlying  theme  the  senate,  along  with  all  of  ASWSUV,  is  trying  to  expressâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and  that  is  to  provide  a  service  to  the  student  community  at  WSU  Vancouver. Below  are  just  a  few  examples  of  how  this  service  can  take  shape  through  the  senate:  Communicating  with  the  student  body-  Reaching  out  takes  effort  but  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  an  effort  our  senators  have  agreed  to  make.  A  plan  to  increase  the  frequency  of  senate  tabling  is  currently  under  discussion  with  much  enthusiasm  from  the  seated  membership.  In  addition,  an  initiative  to  assign  at  least  one  senator  to  each  registered  student  organization  to  provide  assistance  with  all  legislative  matters  is  on  the  table. Legislative  Update:  Themes  of  a  new  legislative  year aking  on  a  new  job  often  begins  with  a  â&#x20AC;&#x153;settling-Âinâ&#x20AC;?  period,  a  time  used  to  learn  the  ropes  and  familiarize  yourself  with  a  new  environment.  While  this  is  expected,  proactive  organizations  want  to  hit  the  ground  running,  and  this  is  exactly  what  the  21st  ASWSUV  senate  has  done.  By  volunteering  portions  of  their  summertime  to  meetings  and  training  sessions,  the  newly  elected  senators  achieved  a  running  start  on  their  roles  as  active  student  representatives. 6SHFLÂżFDOO\ VHQDWRULDO PHPEHUV collaborated  with  ASWSUV  executive  leadership  to  organize  several  special  meetings  that  allowed  early  work  on  routine  legislative  responsibilities.  Those  completed  include  passage  of  the  ASWSUV  EXGJHW FRQÂżUPDWLRQ RI the  executive  staff,  appointment  RI DOO VHQDWRULDO RIÂżFH SRVLWLRQV assignment  of  senate  standing  committees,  branch  goal  setting  and  general  legislative  training. student-Ârelated  interests-  The  senate,  as  the  legislative  branch,  is  the  policy- making  body  of  ASWSUV  with  responsibility  for  providing  students  a  means  to  make  their  concerns  DQG RSLQLRQV KHDUG 7R IXOÂżOO WKLV the  senate  plans  to  maintain  a  high  degree  of  accessibility  between  its  members  and  their  constituents.  Times  for  public  comment  will  still  be  incorporated  into  senate  meeting  DJHQGDV 6HQDWH RIÂżFH KRXUV ZLOO VWLOO be  posted  and  maintained.  An  open- door  policy  for  student  concerns  will  continue  serving  as  the  cardinal  standard  for  the  senate.
