HELP END

SUICIDE

By Xiomara Lara Guest Writer

In the wake of the suicide death of Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi, the nation’s attention has been focused on what many have called an epidemic of gay suicides. Within the past few months at least five recorded gay suicides have been reported. The most recent of these was Seth Walsh, who hanged himself after his family says he was bullied for being openly gay. However, the focus is always on the actual “Bully” who caused this to occur; and never on the other issues that may have also led to many of these suicides. Suicide never has one singular cause. The reality is that the true “Bully” comes in many other forms such as uncaring teachers, homophobic classmates, churches, anti-gay politicians, numerous hate groups and the most hurtful form - family members. We need to understand that suicide never occurs due to just one issue, but many Continued on Page 9

be an advocate,

By Carley Wyche Staff Writer It is 10 a.m. on January 1st, 2012 and you’re slowly rising from your party induced coma. There are two ways this story could go. You wake up alert and refreshed, prepared to face the first and every day of 2012 with an arsenal of resolutions to improve your life. Or you continue to sleep in, confident in the fact that New Year’s resolutions have no bearing on your behavior today, tomorrow, or the next day. The celebration of New Years can be dated as far back as the Babylonians in 4000 BC. But our more modern understanding of the tradition stems from Rome under the rule of Julius Caesar in 153 BC. Inspired by the mythical god Janus (namesake of January), god of beginnings and guardian of doors and entrances, Roman citizens began to make resolutions at the beginning of January. Building upon its historical significance, the beginning of a new year is a tradition celebrated in almost every culture.

Letters to The Editor

We welcome your feedback regarding the newsletter or topics relating to the organization. Submissions may be edited for length, clarity or style. Send all letters to director.communications@thetanuxi.org. Please include full name, season, year and chapter of initiation.

I hope this message finds you well in the New Year. At the start of this New Year, we welcome the opportunities and possibilities that are available to us. Many of us make resolutions to live happier, healthier lives. Even if we don’t fulfill all of our resolutions, we hope that the dedication and effort that we’ve put in to them improves us. If you are still making resolutions, I hope that you will consider devoting another hour of your week to serving Theta Nu Xi. I know that one hour might seem like a small amount of time, but 52 hours each year is a significant commitment to our sisterhood. If you’re looking for ways to give back to our sisterhood, reach out to your regional directors and they’ll happily connect you with a local chapter or sister who could use your assistance. In mid-January, the Chinese New Year was celebrated and this year we welcomed the year of the dragon. This is the 4709th Chinese New Year. And, yet, we continue to usher in the New Year with the same sense of hope and promise as the year that precedes it. According to Chinese custom, the year of the dragon is marked by excitement, unpredictability, exhilaration and intensity. I hope that you will approach your volunteerism with Theta Nu Xi with increased excitement, exhilaration and intensity in this year. I hope you enjoy this year, that you renew your commitment to our sisterhood, and enjoy this first issue of ONEVision in the New Year. ONE Love,

Cianti Stewart-Reid National President

Dear Sisters,

SISTERHOOD SPOTLIGHT 3 What do you now hope to achieve as a sister of Theta Nu Xi?

I really want to continue growing as a person and learning about myself and others during my membership in Theta Nu Xi. Before going through this process I had no clue how I was going to change and I sure did figure that out soon. I want that to continue, I want to grow more and learn more. How much I’ve grown as a person and learned are beyond priceless to me and there’s still more work to be done. This is a journey and there’s no end point, only milestones, so I know that it will happen and I will be an even stronger person because of it.

What are you passionate about in life?

I’m passionate about creating a global community that works together past any distance and embrace those things that make us different. I want to create a world that is open to all and willing to aid whoever needs it, no matter who they are or where they’re from. I work with an organization called Invisible Children that is succeeding in eradicating the Lord’s Resistance Army, rehabilitating and reintegrating child soldiers, and giving opportunities for education through the establishment of better schools and scholarships. A challenge that I often face is that people aren’t willing to help me with my goals because not everyone believes in helping our sisters and brothers in other countries. I’m passionate about changing that and making the world realize that we are also citizens of one planet and we are responsible for all who inhabit it.

How would your life be different if you had not joined Theta Nu Xi? My life would be a mess and I wouldn’t know how to handle it all if I had not joined Theta Nu Xi. My sisters were all there for me when I needed them and they helped me up when I needed to be but they also taught me how to handle situations and understand that it’s okay to trust others and allow others to help you. I learned from them that you don’t always have to be strong and that you can be weak because you’re human; we aren’t impenetrable like Superwoman or as perfectly happy as Rainbow Brite but that’s okay. I wouldn’t have been able to confront fears that have been haunting me for years and I wouldn’t have been able to fully accept my eating disorder. I didn’t know how much of an impact that Theta Nu Xi would make on me but it’s clear that it is a true blessing and it will continue to impact my life in enormous ways.

What are you most proud of?

I’m very proud of myself for being the first in my family to continue on a track for higher education and choosing a career path that I actually want as opposed to what others want. I chose this because education is so important, and I’m creating the path for my siblings and other family members to continue their education. Choosing a career path goes along with this because women in my family do not have careers. So as a child, my family engrained the idea that I needed to be either a doctor or a lawyer so I could be successful but I realized that through education and by doing something I love like work in developing nations, I have become a success. It wasn’t easy expressing that to my family because at first they were worried I wouldn’t be able to survive but they finally understand how important helping others is to me and they embrace it now. I just had to break the mold.

What is one word that you would choose to describe yourself?

Apwoyo which means “thank you” in Acholi. I think that this describes me because I’m very grateful for what I have, the people in my life and the experiences that I’ve been through and each have shaped me in countless ways. I am the person I am today because of the good and the bad and I am thankful for it all. Apwoyo also has another meaning and it’s “welcome.” This meaning describes me because I’m open to all aspects of life. I welcome challenges and obstacles and use them to further myself. I welcome people and cultures and the rich stories they can share with me. I want to experience as much life as possible and embrace it all.

FAT? Does this make me look

By Dana Wooster Guest Writer

How many times do we as women walk pass a window or pause in front of a mirror and ask ourselves that question? I bet if you really thought about it you’d be surprised at how many times we stop to assess how we look – and then unfortunately find ourselves wanting. American society seems to be

filled to the brim with avenues to make women (and men) feel like they’re doing something wrong. In the summer we’re shown images of emaciated women and told to diet for that perfect bikini body. Then as soon as fall hits it’s time to ‘get slim for those holiday get-togethers!’ It’s a never ending cycle of diet, diet, diet, how wrong your body is, and what you should be doing to fix it. The reality is that the diet industry is a multi-billion

dollar cash cow relying on us as the consumer to continue buying their message of dissatisfaction. To continue hating ourselves enough to spend money on quick fixes that most of the time produce no results. What I’d like us all to stop and question is just how long we’re willing to remain hostages to this mentality. Gossip rags and fashion magazines are pushing an unattainable perfection. Helped along by hours of exercise a

If you hear a Sister speak of herself in a derogatory tone, encourage her and remind her how beautiful she is. It’s not an easy battle, that myself and many others continue to fight it every day. But the war is worth winning and I think we’re just the right kind of women to attack it head on.

day, radical diets, and a deft hand at Photoshop, the women portrayed might as well have been designed by a computer as much as they resemble you or I. Magazine editors don’t have to worry about their readers’ mental or physical health, so we have to start doing it for ourselves. We have to start realizing just what amazing, incredible, ONEderful bodies we have and what they do for us everyday. If you’re

reading this right now, your body is up and breathing, blood is circulating, your eyes are focusing and you may even be on your way to eat something delicious that your tongue and brain will appreciate and that your stomach will digest. These are awesome things and functions that should not be taken for granted, but we do so over and over again. We get consumed by worrying about a lump, bump or wrinkle to the point that the total picture is lost. We lose sight of that fact that a long healthy life results from a combination of factors: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, etc. Health and happiness can’t and shouldn’t be defined solely by an arbitrary physical ideal. Beauty is so much more than what we look like on the outside, and I think that we as women of Theta Nu Xi should be even more excited to help spread this message of acceptance and hope. Take time today to think about how awesome your body is. How fantastic it’s working and how thank-

Mel has also served as a model for her university art magazine, jewelry websites and a recent breast cancer awareness benefit that had women dressed up as real life barbies! This beautiful sister is adding one more accomplishment this winter by featuring in the Women Who Jam event hosted by the National Association of Black Female Executives in Music where she will be acting in the main showcase. This dedicated sister is proud to use her talents to break free from the ethnic restrictions placed on her by growing up in the South. Now, she can truly embrace her art and talent with her sisters and family constantly there for support.

Kimberly Barba #2 AQUA-Storm Alpha Beta Chapter Spring 2011

“I have been drawing pretty much my whole life. I started doing those simple drawings you would normally do in class back in elementary school. I’ve always had an eye for detail so my drawings were more developed than those of the other kids. When I draw, my main goal is to make it look as realistic as possible. Drawing is my talent so that is all of the inspiration I need. I amaze myself sometimes when I take a step back and realize like, “Hey, I made this!” I like it because it is a great stress reliever and it also helps me become more familiar with patience.” -Soror Kimberly Barba

BEST TIME TO MAKE A

RESOLUTION?

Continued From Page 1

WHY MAKE RESOLUTIONS?

• New Year, New You: Maybe 2011 was personally a •

really horrible year. January 1st is the day you can forget the mistakes of yester year and begin fresh. Tradition: What would New Year’s Eve be without the accompanying resolutions? A night full of festivities but with no solace in the feeling that you can live in excess on December 31st because you’ll be a changed woman tomorrow. Better to keep the tradition alive. The Beginning: Let’s just face it some people like to start new projects on Monday and you are that person. As Julie Andrews sang the beginning is a very good place to start and what better beginning is there than the beginning of a new year. Motivation: New Year’s resolutions are a competition and you like to be the winner. While others have forgotten their resolutions weeks ago you are motivated to outlast everyone and accomplish your goals.

STRATEGIES: • Vision Board: The key to all successful ventures is the • •

ability to visualize achieving your goals. This is the purpose of a vision board, pictures of the resolution you wish to accomplish hung in a place where they can constantly be seen. S.M.A.R.T Goals: Specific. Measurable. Attainable. Realistic. Timely. This system of goal setting requires not only being honest about what is possible but also setting a specific path to success. New Year’s Buddies: Get a group of Sisters or friends together and review your resolutions for the year while brainstorming ways in which you can support and motivate each other to stay on track.

POWER QUOTE:

“We will open books. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day.” -Edith Lovejoy Pierce, American Poet

While there are major variations in the date on which the holiday is celebrated there are only minor variations in its meaning. Whether you are burning effigies representing the misfortunes of the past year (Hungary), releasing fish and birds from confinement (Thailand), or eating 12 grapes at midnight (Spain), the goal of the new year is to begin anew. This is where the decision comes into play: to begin the year with a host of resolutions or not. Regardless of which side of the resolution debate you fall on, below are some words of encouragement and strategies to help you navigate the path of 2012.

WHY NOT MAKE RESOLUTIONS?

• Already Awesome: Congratulation are in order, you • • •

are already at your most amazing and the only resolution you can come up with is to continue being as awesome in 2012 as you were in 2011. Crowds: Starting a new gym membership or beginning a new meditation class while these places are packed with crowds of people enacting their New Year’s resolutions is not an attractive option. Pressure: Not accomplishing New Year’s resolutions within a month of the first is pretty much deemed failure and who needs that type of pressure, certainly not you. Why January 1st?: The 1st of January has no astronomical or agricultural significance; it’s just another day so why the big fuss. If you want to pick a day to make a resolution, do so on a day when you are ready to really make the change, not when tradition dictates.

STRATEGIES: • Start Today: The lack of calendar boundaries allows ac•

tion to occur at any time you wish. Why put off until tomorrow what you can do today. Say Yes to Life: There are no resolutions/ restrictions governing your actions. This leaves you open to any and every opportunity that comes your way. If an invitation for a dessert tasting comes along, forget the calories, and say yes to life! Say No to Peer Pressure: The excitement created by those around you making New Year’s resolutions may tempt you over to the dark side. But remember you don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions. You believe in action free from pressure and fads.

POWER QUOTE:

“I don’t do those. Instead, every day I try to do better. See better. Say better. Talk better. Be better. I do my best. And I blow it 10 times out of 12. I ask forgiveness of anyone whose feelings I may have hurt. I ask forgiveness of God. I forgive myself. And then I start again.” -Dr. Maya Angelou, American Writer

Researchers have found that the suicide rate is higher in the LGBTQ community than among all other types of populations. The majority of these suicides are due to the harassment allowed to occur in the school environment. So what can we do? Advocate! There are many organizations out there whose main focus is about helping to save lives. One in particular is the Trevor Project. The Trevor Project is determined to end suicide among the LGBTQ community by providing life-saving and life-affirming
