THE SCHOOL

The Steward School was founded in 1972 as an independent, coeducational, non-sectarian day school. Steward is accredited by the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS) and the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS). Steward is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and the Potomac & Chesapeake Association for College Admission Counseling (PCACAC).

MISSION, VALUES, AND BELIEFS

The Steward School's mission is to prepare our students for college and for life in a community defined by robust academics, inspiration, engagement, and care. Students are encouraged to share their ideas while considering the views of their fellow students. Hence, we adhere to guidelines for civil discourse. Our sense of community is facilitated by our commitment to a relatively small student body.

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION STATEMENT

The Steward School is committed to diversity and the development of an educational environment that fosters mutual respect, responsibility, and empathy within our school and in life. We value the presence of individuals whose differences include, but are not limited to: age, ethnicity, gender, learning style, talents, physical ability, political views, race, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and family structure. We expect that all members of the Steward community- students, parents, faculty and staff, administration, and trustees - keep their minds and hearts open to difference as a source of strength and a means of growth for the entire community. We recognize that fulfilling this mission is an ongoing process that requires open dialogue and constant attention.

THE HONOR SYSTEM

The student-run Honor Council administers the Honor Code of The Steward School. The purpose of the system is to create a community of trust throughout the school, to develop in each student a strong sense of individual integrity, and to allow each student responsibility in making personal decisions.

CURRICULUM

As a college-preparatory school where 100% of graduates are admitted to four-year colleges or universities, the curriculum is accordingly rigorous. AP courses are not offered until Grade 10, and it is common for top students to take no more than three or four AP courses in a single year.

FACILITIES HIGHLIGHTS

Steward's campus boasts: five academic buildings, a center for the arts, an athletic center, three athletic fields, a baseball stadium, and nine tennis courts. The Bryan Innovation Lab is a 21st-century, problem-solving environment. Through experiential learning in this cutting-edge facility, students build critical thinking and resourcefulness to succeed and lead in a rapidly-changing world.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

All Upper School students are required to complete 20 hours of community service per year. Many Steward students are deeply invested in service and will exceed this requirement.

EXTRACURRICULAR LIFE

Steward encourages development in all aspects of a student's life. The majority of students participate in athletics, drama, music, and fine and performing arts. Steward's Upper School offers over 30 clubs and organizations, including Entrepreneurship and Leadership programs, which both offer a diploma credential. Annually, students travel domestically and internationally on school-sponsored trips. There are 25 JV and Varsity sports teams with 16 state tournament titles. Steward also has three main-stage productions each year.

MINIMESTER, PUBLIC SPEAKING, AND SENIOR PROJECT

All Upper School students participate in a one-week Minimester each March. Freshman programming is service-oriented, while students in Grades 10-11 participate in off-campus internships, community service experiences, and travel both foreign and domestic. All seniors take a Public Speaking course in which they learn the art of rhetoric and skills for clear and confident oral presentations. All seniors also participate in a long-term Senior Research Project on individually chosen topics. As a culminating activity, students deliver an oral presentation for faculty, parents, and fellow students in April of the senior year.
