THE BIG PICTURE

What is a steward? In this magazine, you will see the collected accomplishments of The Steward School during the past year. Some of these are individual achievements, and some are the fruits of our collective work. Among the many things we have done this year, one that fills me with the most excitement and gratitude is the work of the Spartan Spirit Committee. This group of parents, faculty, and administrators met throughout the year and worked with groups of students on a host of new activities, which I hope will become traditions. Did you notice the athletes helping with Lower School carpool before invitational tournament weekends? Our actors there prior to plays? Eighth-grader Trace Coles and senior Virginia Villani teaching the entire Lower School to jitterbug in anticipation of the spring musical? All conceived in the committee.

I believe we fight two battles all the time in the big picture. How do we make ourselves better, and how do we make our community better? — dan frank, head of school

I’ll give you another example: at the annual Thanksgiving Assembly, we are familiar with the long-standing tradition of Timothy Turkey (there are more of us than will admit who can sing Timothy’s song and dance his dance). This year we added to the tradition—in advance of the assembly, each student and faculty member wrote about something for which they are grateful on a small slip of blue or gold paper. These thoughts were collected—roughly 700 in all—and combined into a single chain, which was raised behind the stage during the proceedings. The chain was then displayed throughout the year in the lobby of the Cramer Center; during the last week of school, it was shredded and bagged, then used as confetti to be thrown by the seniors as their diplomas were conferred at Graduation. Full circle. The newest expression of school spirit this year was the Blue/Gold initiative, in which every member of the school community was assigned to represent either the Blue team or the Gold team. A light competition existed to see which team would earn the most points by attending school events. Though one team eventually “won,” the initiative was important because it gave us thousands of reasons to exclaim “Blue and Gold” publicly, to wear our Steward gear around Richmond, and to plant the seeds of school spirit at every level. We plan to continue Blue/Gold this coming year, but families, as opposed to grade levels, will be designated as one color or the other. We’re all looking forward to finding even more ways to celebrate our collective pride, but as Coach Bruce Secrest reminds us, no matter what, we are one team. We are not Blue or Gold; we are all Spartans. (See more about this initiative on page 42.) While Blue/Gold is lighthearted competition, I believe we fight two battles all the time in the big picture. How do we make ourselves better, and how do we make our community better? How can we make the most of whatever gifts we have been given, and how can we share those gifts with others? How do we move from the fragmentation of a group of individuals in the company of one another to the integrity of a tight knit community? Each of us has worked hard this year to find and serve a calling, and that calling is almost universally outside of ourselves. In working on behalf of the community, we tend to find the justifications for our gifts. We reveal the character of the community as we express our own. Commentator David Brooks describes us all as “stumblers,” flawed individuals working throughout our lives to improve, to become wiser and more graceful, achieved only with the help and guidance of others. “There’s joy in a life filled with interdependence with others, in a life filled with gratitude, reverence, and admiration. There’s joy in freely chosen obedience to people, ideas, and commitments greater than oneself.” This year, we have given ourselves to Steward, and we are better for the work. What is a steward? A steward is one who is reflective and courageous and perseverant, on behalf of him or herself and on behalf of a cause that is greater. A Steward is all of this—with a love for Blue and Gold.

A N N UA L R E P OR T O F G I V I N G

A benchmark year What a tremendous year! It is hard to capture in words the power of the Steward community and the innovative voices that continue to inspire, engage, and care for our students, alumni, and families.

We are truly thankful for the many stewards who continually help us exceed our philanthropic goals and push our dreams into reality. — maggie hoak

The Steward School was founded on the principle of stewardship—in 1975, the Board of Trustees urged the community to uphold the values of a true “steward” who could change reality through responsiveness to a challenge and impact others. This tradition remains at the core of our school’s values. We are truly thankful for the many stewards who continually help us exceed our philanthropic goals and push our dreams into reality. I’d love to share with you what I consider to be the highlights of our giving year: l Our Steward community joined together to raise an outstanding $940,000 for the school, students, and programs. Many families chose to match their passions with their philanthropy, and we saw an unprecedented number of designated gifts. From the new Innovation Station in Lower School funded by Wanda and Jason Welch (pictured on page 35) to the baseball windscreen financed by baseball parents (listed on page 37), we were fortunate to be the recipient of donations that will help drive our school to a better place. l The Annual Fund met its goal of $380,000, and gifts of every size made a great impact on helping us reach this target. Last fall, we launched the Annual Giving Family of Funds, which includes Area of Greatest Need, Professional Development, Financial Aid/Scholarship, Digital Learning and Technology, Athletics, and Fine Arts. These six funds represent the core elements of Steward’s programming, and donors could designate their gifts to the particular area of the school’s operational budget that they found most meaningful. l Following the tragic loss of our dear friend and colleague, Debbie Robson, in September, we were proud to establish the Debbie Robson Merit Scholarship. The merit scholarship program was a vision and passion of Debbie’s, and we were honored to create it in her memory. To date, a total of $210,000 has been raised for the Debbie Robson Merit Scholarship, and the first two recipients, Morgan King and Aayush Lalwaney, are on their way toward a Steward Upper School experience as a result of this generosity. As you read the Annual Report of Giving, you will see many examples of stewardship and a passionate giving community. I look forward to another wonderful year ahead and getting to know the Steward families even better!

Thanks to those who choose to give ANNUAL GIFTS Whether contributing to the Annual Fund, Spartan Club, Debbie Robson Merit Scholarship, Latino Education Advancement Program (LEAP), or other scholarships and programs, Steward would not be able to provide the distinctive educational experience for which we are known without the steadfast and loyal support of its donors. Gifts of all sizes are truly valued and make a great impact on the advancement of the school. The Steward School proudly recognizes donors for their contributions between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015. Spartan Club Matching Gift

Debbie Robson Merit Scholarship In September 2014, The Steward School lost a dear friend with the sudden passing of Debbie Robson. While the school community was stunned by this tragic loss, the generosity that sprang to life in her memory was astonishing. All gifts received by the school in Mrs. Robson’s memory were applied to the newly-created Debbie Robson Merit Scholarship unless otherwise requested. This scholarship, which will provide four years of tuition for two rising ninth-grade students, is the result of a cause which Mrs. Robson championed during her 15 years at Steward, and we are honored that her legacy can live on through this effort.

Blue & Gold 2014-15 saw the kickoff of a new school-wide spirit campaign. We want everyone who graces our campus to feel Spartan pride radiating from our pores. The Spartan Spirit Committee was composed of parents, faculty members, and staff representatives, who met frequently with students to plan activities to boost blue and gold fever. Their ideas included athlete and actor visits with Lower School students during spirit weeks and morning carpool, cards and posters made by our youngest students to support athletes during the Lower School Jamboree, and the revived tradition of a spirit chain that was ultimately shredded to make confetti for Graduation. The festivities were wrapped up with a Blue and Gold spirit celebration, complete with tongue-staining blue and gold ice treats, at the end of the year. Points were accumulated based on attendance at events, and the Blue team won the trophy for 2015. No doubt, the Gold team is already planning its strategy for 2016‌let the games begin!
