The Southern Illinoisan : XXXXXXX 2015

Welcome to the Du Quoin State Fair

GROWING ILLINOIS The Du Quoin State Fair has been a showcase of Illinois families and rich traditions for over 93 years. For many, the Du Quoin State Fair is a rite of passage. It’s an opportunity for the Rauner future farmers of this great state to compete on one of the biggest agricultural stages. For others, it’s a chance to go behind the scenes of the state’s No. 1 industry: agriculture.

When you take a closer look at Illinois’ agriculture industry, you’ll notice there’s much more to offer than commodities and crops. The men and women who call Illinois home produce some of the nation’s top agricultural products: corn, soybeans, wheat, pork, pumpkins and horseradish. Because of their efforts and dedication, Illinois agriculture is a billion-dollar industry, and is among the leaders in the nation for agricultural exports and processed food sales.

During your trip to the Du Quoin State Fair, I hope you get a chance to visit the “AG Expo” area to witness the latest in implement equipment, cheer on your local high school participating in the “FFA Farmyard Follies,” take in an open or junior livestock show, or relax in the grandstand and enjoy the rich tradition of horse racing under the lights. Enjoy the 2015 Du Quoin State Fair. Bruce Rauner Governor, State of Illinois

Celebrating agriculture, Agriculture family traditions takes center stage – again and relationships It is my privilege to welcome you to the 2015 Du Quoin State Fair. The fair is a chance for Illinoisans, both rural and urban, to come together to celebrate agriculture, carry out family traditions and cultivate relationships. It is a privilege to see traditions that are handed down through the generations at the fair — a grandfather teaching his grandson that “winning Nelson isn’t everything,” or a mom cheering on her nervous daughter getting ready to show her horse for the first time. If you are taking part in an agricultural event during the fair, take a moment to explain to a fairgoer how you are involved in the industry. Explain what inspired your 4-H project, how your family farm puts food on dinner tables, or your secret to growing the largest pumpkins in the state. The fair is an event that every resident in the state of Illinois should be proud of. While at the fair, I challenge you to make a new acquaintance or reconnect with an old one, learn a new fact about the agriculture industry or start a new family tradition. Philip Nelson Director, Illinois Department of Agriculture

As an Illinois farm boy, I have been in your shoes. You’ve spent countless hours preparing your animal for this very moment. It’s your time to shine on one of Illinois’ biggest agricultural stages! Back in my 4-H days, I logged countless hours in the livestock barns where I worked with cattle. I hope you relish Buchen these times and these experiences. This exposure will teach you many life lessons that you may not even realize until later in life. That’s exactly what we set out to do at the state fair: Enhance agriculture through education and enlightenment in a safe and fun environment. I love agriculture and the fair business, so becoming manager of the state fairs in Illinois has been a dream come true for me. I look forward to watching you all compete for the top prize, making your dreams come true as well. As you look back on your time at the state fairs, I hope you’ll have fond memories and help us as we look to “Grow Illinois” for years to come. Patrick Buchen State Fair Manager

Still one of the most popular events in Southern Illinois Once known in the fair industry as “a grandstand fair,” meaning major emphasis was placed on stage shows produced before large paid audiences in the fair’s main grandstand, the Du Quoin State Fair is anything but as it prepares for its 93rd edition running Aug. 27-Sept. 7. Major night shows featuring many of Huff the nation’s top entertainers are still featured at Du Quoin, but there is an amazing array of free shows throughout the grounds that are largely responsible for making the overall event the most popular happening in Southern Illinois. While some may question the overall attendance figures provided down through the years, there is no legitimate challenge to the claim that the Du Quoin State Fair normally attracts well more than 300,000 people each year. As one might expect, the weatherman is the key. Reasonable weather with only a shower or two during the 11-day run equals 300,000-plus in attendance. A rainout of one or two major events — stage show or auto race — and fewer than that number may be the final tally. It all started when a gentleman by the name of W. R. Hayes and a group of his Du Quoin friends came up with the idea of forming a partnership and staging a festival at which horse racing and stage shows would be the principal entertainment. That was in 1923, and the happening was successful from the very start. And, from the very beginning, it was called the Du Quoin State Fair because the group agreed that they wanted it to be “the quality of a state fair.” Privately owned for the first 63 years — the State of Illinois didn’t

take over ownership until 1986 — it’s always been known as the Du Quoin State Fair. The grandstand lineup through the years, but especially the past 60 years, has featured the finest and most talented entertainers touring the fair circuit. Not all of the nation’s most talented entertainers played fairs, but it’s somewhat difficult to name a great one which has not appeared at Du Quoin. True, Elvis, Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand never appeared, but virtually all of the other majors did. Bob Hope, Red Skelton, Liberace, Johnny Carson, Louie Armstrong, Johnny Cash, one can go on and on, and, in all probability, they’ve also played at Du Quoin. And, too, the fair was once the home of the Hambletonian. For non-harness racing fans, that may force a home of the what?. The Hambletonian was — and still is — the Kentucky Derby of horses that trot as opposed to running like they do so well at Louisville, Kentucky, the first Saturday of May each year. Hosting the prestigious Hambletonian guaranteed the Du Quoin fair of national recognition in addition to the attendees that went along with it. Auto racing also was a major spectacle at Du Quoin for many years with the likes of A.J. Foyt, Tony Bettenhausen, Mario Andretti, etc., regular competitors. All the principal stars — entertainers, horses and drivers — have combined to make the Du Quoin State Fair a once-in-alifetime experience for fairgoers. And now the many free shows on the grounds, structured primarily for pre-teens, are keeping it one of the major attractions in Southern Illinois. Fred Huff Du Quoin State Fair Historian

HISTORY LESSON First Fair, Oct. 6, 1923: W. R. Hayes, prime owner and manager, although several other Du Quoin businessmen were involved. And, contrary to some reports, there were electric lights available. A Du Quoin Evening Call story specifically mentioned “electric lights will be turned on for first time tonight” (Oct. 6, 1923). Attendance: 60,000. Second Fair, Oct. 7, 1924: W. R. Hayes listed as “general manager,” Jim McSherry as president. Attendance: 85,000. Third Fair, Sept. 30-Oct. 6, 1925: Rain forced postponement of auto races, so the fair was extended two days as downtown businesses closed. Fourth Fair, Aug. 30-Sept. 6, 1926: First major change in fair dates. Mid-July, 1945: All-wooden 3,000seat grandstand at one-half mile track burned to the ground. Present grandstand rushed to completion in time for Labor Day (Sept. 3) opening. Sept. 10, 1952: W. R. Hayes died of a heart attack a few days after fair closed. Two years earlier, his Lusty Song had won the Hambletonian still being held in Goshen, N.Y. Aug. 27, 1957: Hambletonian raced at Du Quoin first time. (Hickory Smoke, 2.1) March 15. 1964: E. J. (Gene) Hayes, who had followed his father (W. R.) as fair president, died suddenly at age of 54. June 24, 1967: Don M. Hayes, who had succeeded his older brother, Gene, as fair president, was killed in a plane crash at age of 55. March 3, 1979: Bill Hayes, grandson of W. R. who had taken over management of the fair after Don’s death in 1967, announced the sale of the property to Saad Jabr, a Carbondale resident and his Delaware corporation, Sabr Aeronautics Inc. He placed his oldest son, Saleh, in charge although hiring a Disneyland executive, Jim Benedick, as “president.” Benedick made many decisions before resigning after only one year. Saleh and his brothers then took over completely. Aug. 23-Sept. 1, 1986: The 64th Du Quoin State Fair was now owned by the State of Illinois after its purchase from the Jabr family several months earlier for a reported 3.5 million dollars. Aug. 28-Sept. 7, 2015: The 93rd Du Quoin State Fair is the 30th under State of Illinois ownership and guidance.

COLT FORD Colt Ford will “crank it up” at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 29 in the DU Quoin State Fair Grandstand. Ford, a good old country boy and one-time pro golfer, brings hip-hop rhythms to country music. Ford’s music is described at country, but it is so much more. “Crank It Up,” from his 2014 album Thanks for Listening, has rock and roll fell to the rap cadence of “Driving Around Song” released in 2012 on the album Declaration of Independence, Ford’s music does not fit neatly into a country label. While the music may not always fit its county label, the lyrics are another story. The theme of Ford’s songs resonate with the country music crowd – America, country music, hard work, trucks, golf,

celebrating with family and friends, and even chicken and biscuits and trailers. Ford does not just like to sing about parties with his friends, he also likes to sing with his friends. He has collaborated with George Jones (“No Trash in My Trailer”), Jason Aldean (“Driving Around Song”), Brantley Gilbert (“Dirt Road Anthem”), Randy Houser (“Washed in the Mud”), and others. Josh Thompson will open for Ford. Thompson’s third album, Turn it Up, pays homage to the solid country tradition from which his music has grown. Thompson’s live shows have earned him a solid fan base and respect from the acts that have followed him. Tickets are $20 and $15.

KidBuck$ Game Show is a thrilling game show where randomly selected members of the audience participate in wild and crazy games. The grand champion enters the Kidbuck$ chamber and grabs as many Kidbucks as possible as they swirl about the chamber. The bucks are tallied and redeemed for a prize based on how many bucks are collected.

American Authors American Authors is a four-piece alternative rock band based in Brooklyn. Members Zachary Barnett, James Adam Shelley, Matt Sanchez and Dave Rublin met while attending Berklee College of Music in 2006, where they honed their razor-sharp musicianship and mastery of songcraft. Their sounds weaves hip-hop grooves, Afro-Latin rhythms and vocal harmonies into a rock and roll sound. Although American Authors garnered attention for its first single, “Believer,” the group’s second single, “The Best Day of My Life,” catapulted them into the spotlight. And, whoa, whoa, you have heard this song and are probably humming it now. “The Best Day of My Life” was a No. 1 hit on the U.S. Adult Top 40 charts and on music charts around the world. It was

featured in commercials for Lowe’s and MLB Fan Cave, as well as commercials in the United Kingdom, South Africa and New Zealand. It also was used in trailers for the films “Delivery Man,” “Earth to Echo,” “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” “Humpback Whales” and “St. Vincent.” Their 2015 hit, “Go Big or Go Home,”

hit number 25 on the U.S. Adult Top 40 charts and is featured on NBA videos showing highlights from the playoffs. The Mowgli’s will open the show, an alternative rock band that works to convey a positive message through their music. Tickets are $22 and $17.

CHARLIE DANIELS BAND Country great Charlie Daniels will return to the Du Quoin State Fair. Best known for his No. 1 country hit “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” Daniels has been an active singer since the 1950s. He was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 2008 and Musicians Hall of Fame in 2009. Daniels has had five albums in make the top 10 on U.S. music charts and numerous hit songs. Songs like “Long Haired Country Boy,” “In America,” and “The South’s Gonna Do It” resonate with his fans as anthems of small-town America. But Daniels is also an accomplished musician. Few can

match his fiddle playing. During the 1970s he played fiddle for The Marshall Tucker Band and Hank Williams Jr., in addition to releasing some of his own biggest hits. Daniels is not afraid to speak his mind. The band’s official website contains a “soap box” page where Daniels expresses his opinion on politics, America and other topics. Lee Roy Parnell will open for The Charlie Daniels Band. Parnell is a country music and blues artist, songwriter and guitarist. He has recorded eight studio albums and has had more than 20 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Singles and Tracks. Tickets are $18 and $13.

MONTGOMERY GENTRY Montgomery Gentry has become one of the most identifiable duos in the history of country music. After nearly 15 years, they continue to draw door-busting crowds to their concerts and release albums that stay true to the Kentucky country music they helped define. Troy Gentry and Eddie Montgomery began performing as part of two different bands with Montgomery’s brother John Michael Montgomery. The duo was formed in 1999 and is known for its southern rock influences. The group has released six albums and has had No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts with “If You Ever Stop Loving Me,” “Something to be Proud Of,” “Lucky Man,” “Back When I Knew It All” and “Roll With Me.” Ten more songs have reached the top 10 on the country charts and two albums are certified platinum. Montgomery Gentry has won American Music Award for favorite new artist-country, Academy of Country Music Award for top new vocal duo or group, and Country Music Association Award for vocal duo of the year, and they have been nominated for numerous other awards. Tickets are $22 and $17.
