A great place to start and grow a business

‌A

s the gateway to an area with a rich tradition of agriculture and forestry, Carbondale has long been recognized as a community where things bloom and prosper. That reputation is

growing (pun intended) even more as Carbondale is gaining national recognition as a premier location to start, develop and expand businesses of all kinds. Carbondale, according to Wallethub.com, is the 22nd best small city

in the U.S. with a population between 25,000 and 100,000 residents, and is the second best city in Illinois to start a small business. There were 1,268 cities listed in the survey. Carbondale’s high score on the survey can be attributed to being third on the list for access to resources. This took

into account financing accessibility and was calculated by dividing the total annual value of small business loans by total number of small businesses, the survey read. Also, prevalence of investors was a criteria for access to resources. WalletHub Analyst Jill Gonzalez said that was measured by the number of investing entities per 100,000 residents, according to Yelp. Employee availability, meaning subtracting the number of unemployed residents from the number of job openings, along with higher-education assets, and workforce education attainment, meaning the percentage of the population with at least a bachelor’s degree were taken into account. For comparison’s sake, Urbana, home of the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign, ranked 545th on the list, while its sister city, Champaign ranked 305th. DeKalb, home of Northern Illinois University, ranked 795th, and Normal, home to Illinois State University ranked 370th, while its sister-city, Bloomington, ranked 259th. Jeff Doherty, Jackson Growth Alliance executive director, said this report shows there are a lot of good reasons to do business in Carbondale. “Whenever you compare favorably with 1,268 similar sized cities and you fall into the rank of 22nd, that is a good thing,” he said. He said looking at high-education assets, the work being done at the DunnRichmond Center and the Small Business Development Center plays a pivotal role in producing good businesses in the area. “The infrastructure to support small business is high here,” Doherty said. “The costs of doing business here is in the higher third as well.” The WalletHub ranking comes on the heels of Southern Illinois University again being named as one of Forbes Magazine’s “Most Entrepreneurial Universities,” landing 27th on the national list, and first among Illinois institutions. Forbes ranks institutions across the United States on the basis of alumni and students who identify themselves with a specific university and also list themselves as founders or business owners on the professional networking site LinkedIn. In order to adjust for the differing sizes of the universities, the numbers are adjusted according to enrollment ratio. Southern Illinois University has made the prestigious list two years running, moving up 10 spots in the most recent rating. “I think this ranking is acknowledgement of SIU’s commitment to entrepreneurship across campus – from our Office of Economic and

Regional Development to the various colleges, faculty, staff and students,” Kyle Harfst, executive director of economic development and of the SIU Research Park, said. “We support entrepreneurship through the Small Business Development Center, the Small Business Incubator Program and many other programs. SIU also fosters student entrepreneurship through Saluki Ventures, our student-focused incubation program, the Saluki Innovation Lab and the Saluki Entrepreneurship Corps registered student organization,” Harfst added. “In many ways, SIU encourages innovation and entrepreneurship among the campus community and in the region as well.” Together, the WalletHub report and the inclusion on Forbes’ list show that Carbondale is the perfect place to grow a business. The access to funding sources, business advice and resources, an educated and eager workforce and a high quality of life for residents all add to the appeal of Carbondale for business. “Carbondale has good access to capital, low cost of living and good entrepreneurial support. Those are all great things that business people need to start and continue doing business,” Carbondale City Manager Gary Williams explained. Williams added that recent developments in the community, such as the addition of ultra-high speed internet to much of the city, also make Carbondale a better place to grow a business. “What this means for Carbondale, there are only a handful of communities nationally that have gigabit fiber to the home, so for us to have this technology is not only unique, but it also sets us apart from other communities,” he said. “It will give us more opportunities to recruit businesses; it makes our city more attractive to them. I view gigabit as infrastructure — now we have one that very few other communities have. With the university and hospital here, this compliments both of those assets very well.” New businesses in Carbondale find a community of willing customers, eager to support start-ups and entrepreneurs. “Carbondale’s diverse culture broadens the type of businesses that can be started and thrive here,” says Todd Darnstaedt, owner of Today’s Technology, an automobile repair shop he started in 2006. “The wide range of services, suppliers and even customers available here helps to make businesses successful.”

Total solar eclipse Thousands of people expected to converge on the region for event

hough all eyes will be on the total solar eclipse due to arrive in Southern Illinois well more than a year from now, a byproduct of the celestial happening might prove to be as rare if not more for the region. And it has local tourism, business and emergency representatives preparing – now. Southern Illinois University in Carbondale has been planning for three years. After all, how often do hundreds of thousands of people converge on the region for a single event? Some eclipse experts put the number of potential visitors in the millions. “They are coming from all over the place,”

Brandy Nance, marketing director for Blue Sky Vineyards, said of calls her business has already received about accommodations. “I mean all over the state. We’ve had some from China that have called in. They’re from everywhere.” The challenge with planning for the “Great American Eclipse” is that nobody really knows how many people will descend upon Carbondale and Southern Illinois on Aug. 21, 2017, to marvel at one of nature’s greatest phenomena at or near its point of greatest duration. Phrases such as “tens of thousands” and even “hundreds of thousands” have been thrown about by officials planning for the event in regard to crowds throughout the region, though they readily admit they aren’t really sure. In that regard, it’s kind of like throwing a dinner party without RSVPs, where a few people could show up or dozens: it’s a waste to cook too much, and rude to run out of food. SIU Chancellor Brad Colwell estimated there could be 30,000 to upward of 60,000 people on campus that day — which is also the scheduled opening day of the 2017 school year at Southern Illinois University. And there are expected to be many more people in the region. “It’s a bit of a guessing game,” Colwell said. Steven Mitchell, chairman of the Southern Illinois Economic Development Conference Committee, expressed a similar sentiment

After a speech by Matt Penn, an astronomer at the National Solar Observatory, Chris Midden looks through a special telescope set up for viewing the sun March 31, 2015 at Southern Illinois University.

about estimating crowds. He said officials are also trying to form estimates based off total eclipses visible in years prior in other parts of the world. “Trying to estimate is an almost impossible task,” Mitchell said of anticipated crowds on eclipse day, not only in Carbondale but throughout the region. In Southern Illinois, the eclipse’s path of totality will run from south of Chester to south of Golconda, Mitchell said.

The Eclipse — Or should we say, Eclipses

On Aug. 21 2017, the first total solar eclipse over the U.S. mainland since 1979 will reach its point of greatest duration a few miles south of Carbondale, totaling about two minutes and 40 seconds when it arrives around 1:21 p.m. It will be the first total eclipse – during which day will literally turn into night complete with dropping temperatures and visible stars – to

traverse the entire mainland from coast to coast since June 8, 1918. If you miss it, you’ll have a second chance when the centerline of totality – roughly a 70-mile wide path of the moon entirely shielding the sun – will return April 8, 2024. The two centerlines seven years apart will intersect over Cedar Lake, bringing with them astronomers, students, first-time viewers and those who are known as eclipse chasers from around the world. One link of interest at GreatAmericanEclipse. com is a list of the Top 10 best places to view the total eclipse that day. Carbondale is listed as one of those top sites, with the author stating it has the “special distinction” of being near the crossing centerlines of both the Aug. 21, 2017, total solar eclipse and the April 8, 2024, total solar eclipse. Also, the point of longest eclipse for 2017 is just southeast of Carbondale, it states. The duration of totality is 2 minutes, 41.6 seconds, though that’s just a matter of seconds longer than in some other nearby locations. Totality will begin at 1:20 p.m. “I am expecting it is going to be in the millions,” Southern Illinois University’s Bob Baer said of the number of people anticipated in the region for the eclipse’s first pass. Baer directs public astronomy observations through SIU’s physics department and is co-chair of the university’s eclipse planning committee. SIU officials are projecting 30,000 to 50,000 visitors on campus for the eclipse. Among them will be NASA astronomers, Baer said, but more on that later. It’s hard to predict. With the 2017 eclipse traversing across multiple states coupled with a weather pattern far too early to forecast, no one can yet say with certainty how many might descend upon the area. By the time the 2017 eclipse arrives, it will have been three years since SIU officials began planning for it, Baer of the physics department said. “It’s a really, really big project. It’s hard to overstate how big of a project it is,” he said. “It is probably the biggest event that will be at SIU in most people’s lifetime.” The eclipse committee also has a public safety component, and discussions are under with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, public health departments and local law enforcement. Several activities centered on the eclipse are already set, including using the football stadium and the surrounding athletic complex for observations, he said. Indoor viewing, lectures and tailgating are also planned. Baer is in charge of the eclipse committee’s scientific outreach. He’s also a member of the Astronomical Association of Southern Illinois, which plans to hold events at Giant City State Park. The project goes beyond merely hosting enthusiasts. Coordination with a number of scientific outlets has been ongoing, among them NASA, Baer said. Others include the

The total solar eclipse occurs only within the yellow path as shown in this map. Only the southernmost section of Illinois enjoys totality, but the area will witness the longest duration of the total solar eclipse along the entire path if only by a tiny whisker over Kentucky.

Adler Planetarium in Chicago and a number of universities for science projects. “This is really blowing up into a massive project,” Baer said.

Eclipse chasers

Baer has also been giving presentations at community workshops for many months. Past workshops have involved eclipse chasers, such as Dan McGlaun from Indiana. A former math teacher and now works in information technology. He has witnessed 11 total eclipses in various locations around the globe. There are too many variables, like the ever-changing weather, to say with confidence how many will be here come August of 2017. But if the weather is poor elsewhere in the country, a million-plus people are plausible, McGlaun said. “That is not outside the realm of possibility,” he said. Plus there is the fact that the eclipse will last the longest in Southern Illinois, a point that NASA has been publicizing. McGlaun believes a total eclipse is an experience like no other, he said, accounting for the chase phenomenon and making duration all that more of a draw. “It’s the coolest, greatest, amazing and most wonderful thing you will ever see in your life. I continue to want to go to every one of them because they are so stunning,” McGlaun said. He stressed that it is critical to be within the totality pathway for the full experience. Being slightly outside of that pathway, where only a partial eclipse can be seen, does not

provide the same effect. NASA is planning to be set up in Carbondale that day, to broadcast the total solar eclipse to viewers around the world, said Lou Mayo, a planetary scientist and program manager working for ADNET Systems at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, and a professor of astronomy at Marymount University. The goal, he said, is “Let’s see if we can touch a billion people with this eclipse, and we have some history of doing that sort of thing.” Retired astrophysicist Fred Espenak — known to many as “Mr. Eclipse” — said a number of unusual events will accompany the total solar eclipse. The local temperature can drop upward of 10 degrees, he said. Flowers begin to close up as if it is dusk. Birds begin roosting. Cows may head to the barn thinking it is sunset. Baer also noted that pets may react negatively out of confusion, and should be left at home. This is anticipated to be such a big event because it is the first time in 38 years — since 1979 — that a total solar eclipse was visible from the contiguous United States, Espenak said. The last time a total eclipse was visible from Illinois was 1869, he said, and coming up, the Land of Lincoln will be graced with not one, but two occurrences: next year and in 2024. The centerlines of totality for both these eclipses intersect over Carbondale’s Cedar Lake. “This is really unusual,” he said. “You’re really lucky.” — Molly Parker and Nick Mariano of The Southern Illinoisan contributed to this article.

he Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities, or CEO program, is in full swing in Carbondale and Southern Illinois. The program offers students hands-on business experience and a chance to build their own start-ups over the course of a year. It is offered in Williamson, Jackson, Union, Perry, Saline, Randolph and Perry counties. The program, which started in 2008, is already in place in more than a dozen counties in Illinois, Minnesota and Indiana, said Craig Lindvahl, executive director of the Midstate Institute of

12 carbondalechamber.com

Entrepreneurship, which oversees and promotes the program. Jackson CEO is primarily funded by business investors from the community in each county. The class is open to high school juniors and seniors, who are selected by a board in each county. Lindvahl said the application process is rigorous. Classes never meet inside a classroom. Instead, they meet in a different business each school quarter. The class meets for 90 minutes to two hours each day and provides two high-school credits to students.

In the second half of the class, students are given the opportunity to start their own businesses. The students draft a business plan, look for investors and generate a profit. At the end of the semester, the program hosts an annual trade show to showcase the businesses. Students even go through the same process as other entrepreneurs — including meeting with lenders. In March, eight Jackson County high school students sat down with Jackson County bankers to learn their fates for their plans and potential funding for their small businesses and to see if those plans were prepared well enough for a small business loan.

“I asked them the exact same questions as if a regular business person were to come into the bank. They answered the questions just as good as, or even better, than some people.” Bob Bleyer, president of Bank of Carbondale Ken Stoner, class facilitator, said bankers were specifically asked to treat the students just as they would any business owner looking for a loan. Representatives of The Bank of Carbondale, First Southern Bank, SIU Credit Union and First Bank and Trust Company of Murphysboro were all in attendance. The eight students each met with two different bankers, spending a half hour with each person at the Dunn-Richmond Center in Carbondale. According to Stoner, all the students were fully funded. Although the bankers were not actually funding the students, they were making actual decisions on whether or not the students received capital to start their businesses, Stoner said. The students have generated capital through a micro-business and class business during the first portion of the class, he said. That money was placed into an account and in order for the students to gain access to any seed money for their individual businesses, they had to write a full business plan and get it approved by a banker. If the students were denied at this stage, they would’ve had one more opportunity, and if they were declined again, they would have been responsible for generating their own seed capital, Stoner said. The seed money in the account generated in the first part of the class will be given to the students in the form of a check to cover initial business costs. It is a zero-interest loan and has to be paid back within a year. Stoner said that money coming back will serve as an investment to the next year’s class. Bob Bleyer, president of Bank of Carbondale, said he was very surprised by how well-thought-out the business plans were and how well-versed the students were. “I asked them the exact same questions as if a regular business person were to come into the bank,” he said. “They answered the questions just as good as, or even better, than

some people.” Joshua Loyd, a senior at Carbondale Community High School, said the experience was “eye-opening.” “We were able to see and get suggestions on how we could improve … from a banker’s perspective as to

what they absolutely want,” he said. “In the future, if we want to go to a bank for another business loan, we will be completely prepared.” — Dustin Duncan of The Southern Illinoisan contributed to this article.

on the cutting edge but still fond of the simple things. Carbondale is home to outstanding educational institutions, a thriving business community and vibrant entertainment scene, all while serving as a gateway to natural attractions and

destinations found nowhere else. It is a city with thousands of young people, eager to make their mark and build their futures, working and learning side by side with professionals willing to lend guidance, mentoring serious study, research discovery, understanding that

discovering one’s self is the truest result of education. Ours is a community for serious fun, too — perfect for those who want to shop, play, enjoy live entertainment and great food or simply bask in some of nature’s most beautiful and awe-inspiring views. A bustling community, Carbondale is the educational, retail, health care and cultural capital of Southern Illinois. Founded in 1852 by Daniel Harmon Brush, John Asgill Conner and Dr. William Richard, Carbondale quickly became a railroad hub, serving as a shipping point for Southern Illinois coal and fruit. Education was a focus of civic leaders who developed Carbondale College in the city’s early years. Later, Southern Illinois Normal University was established as a teacher-training school. SINU grew into what is now Southern Illinois University, an internationallyrecognized public research university with more than 200,000 proud alumni around the world. Promoting Carbondale as a great place to live, work, visit, play and invest

‌T

he Carbondale Chamber serves the area as a strong non-profit professional organization whose mission is to advance the interests of business and promote Carbondale as a great place to live, work, visit, play and invest. Chamber members are people and firms who believe in their community and in doing business the right way. They strive to be involved in the life of the city and in taking action rather than sitting on the

bench. They share the understanding that being a member is an investment not only for their business, but also in the quality of life for the entire region. The Chamber is a credible source of information for residents, visitors, people relocating to the area and new and existing businesses. Membership identifies businesses as reputable, trustworthy and caring. The Carbondale Chamber of commerce serves the city and the organization’s more

than 450 member-businesses through a variety of programs, services and activities. Major events such as the Chamber’s annual awards banquet showcase the accomplishments and successes of our business sector. On-going programs including the Chamber’s regular Business Builders Breakfast seminar series and the “Talk of the Town” radio program heard every Monday morning on WDBX-FM, which brings the latest in information and

business news to the community. Many of these efforts are the responsibility of the Chamber’s volunteer committees, each with diverse membership and specific roles: The Ambassadors Committee strives to promote member participation, support the mission of recruiting and retaining Chamber membership, designing, implementing and participating in fundraising events, planning and hosting Chamber annual meetings and organizing ribbon cuttings, grand opening ceremonies and after hour events for member businesses. The Saluki Pride Committee partners with Southern Illinois University in recruitment and retention efforts. The committee participates in activities such as SIU open houses, Saluki Athletics, Homecoming and international student events. This committee is also responsible for the “dawg paws” seen on streets and in driveways across town and for the Saluki Stay Scholarship that assists juniors and seniors by providing a variety of in-kind gifts from member businesses. The Government Affairs Committee discusses and researches pertinent state, local and national issues to help the Chamber best represent to governmental bodies the views and opinions of its membership. This committee surveys Chamber membership on matters at the state, local and federal levels and shares the results with elected officials. During election years, the committee sponsors candidate forums and discussions on issues.
