June is Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month The month of June is National Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month. The Jackson County Animal Shelter (JCAS) would like to announce that not only is it ki�en season but adult cats are available for adoption at a discounted price for the rest of June. Cat adoptions include spay/neuter, feline leukemia testing, de-wormer, ea treatment, distemper, Felavac, rabies vaccination and any other needs. Every year at this time, the
Jackson County Animal Shelter faces a major challenge as the number of cats and kiďż˝ens begin to overwhelm their facility and others. Despite the animal welfare community’s long term spay and neutering eorts, there is still an oversupply of felines in Jackson County and nationwide. JCAS does everything possible to ďŹ nd good homes for each feline coming through the doors of the shelter. They work with volunteers, foster parents, res-
cue groups and other licensed facilities to care for and locate new homes for their feline friends. They continue to work with the other shelters and the local veterinarian community to actively spay and neuter cats year round. Through these efforts, they have decreased by half the shelter’s intake of cats to the current level of 1500 cats per year. Unfortunately, there continues to be an oversupply of cats. continue positive progress. The American Humane Society points out that: - Of the approximately 7.6 million companion animals who enter shelters nationwide every year, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats. - Each year, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized (1.2 million dogs and 1.4 million cats). - Approximately 2.7 million shelter animals are adopted
Dental clinic in Jackson receives $350,000 federal funding boost and expands services to all adults The new Center for Family Health Dental Clinic has been awarded $350,000 in annual support from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The award, announced June 13 by the Health Resources and Services Administration, helps the Center for Family Health expand dental services to all adults who need care, regardless of whether they are medical patients at the Center, and regardless of insurance or ability to pay. The Dental Clinic opened May 16 at 500 N. Jackson St. It is a state-of-the-art facility with 20 dental chairs and room to expand. With 22,000 square feet of space across two oors, the facility enables the Center for Family Health to broaden dental services previously limited mostly to children. Built and equipped at a cost of $8.5 million, the Dental Clinic was ďŹ nanced in part by generous community and charitable support. Construction is complete, but fundraising continues, thanks to a Challenge Grant from the Weatherwax Foundation. Donors include Henry Ford Allegiance Health, the Jackson Health Plan Endowment, the Delta Dental Foundation, the Alvin Glick Foundation, the Speckhard-Knight
Charitable Foundation, the Samuel Higby and Margaret H. Camp Charitable Foundation, and the Myers Trust. The Weatherwax Foundation’s ongoing challenge grant promises $200,000 if the Center raises an additional $600,000 in donations. “While we thank the community for the ďŹ nancial support given to expand adult dental services, the work is
