Thanks for your support Each month I will pick at random two or three of our advertisers and run a brief free write up of those businesses to explain what they do, why they do it and why and how they started. This is my thank you to all of our advertisers, old or new, large or small who make The Riders Mag possible with their advertising dollars. Please patronize their businesses and let them know that you saw their ads in The Mag.

Leather King

Nash is a great guy who has been in the business a long time and shows no signs of slowing down! He started out in a store on Tecumseth Ave. in Windsor back in 1996 before buying the building at his present location at 2822 Howard Ave. Windsor in 1999. He renovated to suit his needs and went about selling great motorcycle leather products to riders in search of quality goods at reasonable prices. There are a lot of riders from all across this Country wearing leather bought from Nash

THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 8

as he took his show on the road doing the Motorcycle Show Circuit for years. He has a full line of Motorcycle boots and has recently brought in a great selection of Western boots. Leather King is now a one stop superstore for anything Motorcycle related including helmets and he also carries parts and accessories.

Hwy. 22 Action Trailer Sales

They opened at their present location in 2004 selling and servicing a line of trailers boasting the largest onsite selection of trailers in the area. If you want a certain type of trailer for whatever your need they probably have it in stock and ready to go. They pride themselves on personal service, knowing their product, their business and all that the business entails from regulations to all the options and specs. They are far more than just trailers and their showroom full of truck and trailer accessories will amaze you. If you’re interested in a trailer stop in and check them out! They also do trailer rentals!

Fred Hale/Strictly V Twin

Fred Hale Motors has been a landmark in Pefferlaw for 30 years! The Sign out by the road now says Strictly V Twin but all of us old guys still call it Fred Hale Motors. Fred slowly transitioned from selling used cars on this location to selling motorcycles and motorcycle parts and accessories back in 1988. It was a good decision as he has made a great life and career from those humble beginnings and it gives him great personal satisfaction. He semi-retired back in 2008 letting his kids Amy and Ted take over the business with him staying on as a consultant, advisor and in charge of the go get shit department! Fred is as enthusiastic as ever, and feels blessed to have lived the life he has, done the things that he’s done, been the places he’s been and accomplished all that he has! He feels blessed by having such a great business, great family, with great kids who share his interests his enthusiasm, his love of motorcycles and his love of life! There are many people out there who have built up successful businesses in hopes that their children would take over some day and carry only to find out that they want nothing to do with it! To have both kids willing and able to carry on is a real treat. He is thankful for all of the friends that he’s made from the business and during his travels and adventures all over North America. Fred and his kids are a pleasure to deal with and I’m happy to have them as advertisers and proud to have them as friends. Fred has given his support and encouragement to me since I took over the Mag. He called me during my recent Hospital stay to wish me well and even offered to come and drive down from Pefferlaw to give me a ride home if I needed him to. Thanks for caring and thanks for your support!

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 9

Well for many of you long time readers of my drivel that I have cleverly regurgitated into a series of columns for all these years, it will come as no surprise that life is never boring in Critter Country. If you have followed my adventures and misadventures this far, let me continue! THE FACT THAT I’M WRITING THIS PORTON OF THIS ARTICLE from my Bed at Southlake Regional Hospital in beautiful downtown Newmarket Ont. should be an indication that I’m still living up to my credo, “Why just have a life……. When you can have an adventure!” I arrived here early Friday morning, this has been my home for the past four days and it is where I will remain for at least the next few days or more depending entirely on what the fine team of Doctors here find wrong with me next! Let me take you back to where this little adventure began! Things have been incredibly busy around here lately. As if being on deadline wasn’t stressful enough on its own it seems that everyone and anyone even remotely connected to me or The Mag has had some sort of health issues or medical crisis arise. This all involved appointments that had to be shoehorned into our usual hectic schedule that is better described as loosely controlled chaos! I managed to fit all this extra stuff in with photoshoots interviews writing, editing drawing cartoons designing new Riders Mag Support pins shirts patches and other items that will make their début at the upcoming Spring Motorcycle Show March 25 and 26 at The International Centre in Toronto. I also had to pick out and pick up the clothing and get it to my buddies Dan and Kris at Alfagraf in Mississauga for them to silkscreen. Plus a whole bunch of other stuff! Sleep was a rare commodity!

THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 10

Thank God for our fine crew headed by Managing Editor Al (Persevering despite health issues of his own), Scott, Jordan, and newcomer, Gypsy, who all pitched in to get it done especially with working our print schedule coinciding with Family Day thrown into the mix. Special thanks going out to the fine crew at McLaren Press for getting it all done. The chaos didn’t end with getting it off to the printer as we hoped either but continued on right up to, what I’m going to label “Thursday from Hell!!!” The day didn’t start particularly well, taking an unexpected, distinct and rapid turn and descent in a downhill and southerly direction and just kept on going for the rest of the day and several more days after that! First off I arrived at the warehouse in Aurora at 7:00 AM as per my arrangement with the printer. The truck however wasn’t there and didn’t show up until 8:00 AM. This put me late before I can even start my deliveries and impacts everybody right down the line and makes for a very long day with no time for breaks of lunch for me or any of my crew of drivers including those waiting at the warehouse in Burlington for their Mags that were to arrive there at 9:00. Needless to say, there were several, not so cordial calls made in which I expressed my disappointment and dissatisfaction in as controlled a manner as I could muster while fielding angry calls, texts and e mails from my crew who wished to relay the same to me! So I continued on, trying to make up time, salvage what I could of this day and perhaps, set myself up for a fresh start tomorrow! I thought that if I could make it home that night even though, tired, frustrated, pissed off, and feeling kind of shitty, I would be OK in the morning! I failed to realize that my experience was far from over and the worst was yet to come and that what I’d experienced thus far was merely “THURSDAY FROM HELL”! This had been a prelude to what lay in store and will forever live on in my memory as; “FULL ON FUCKING FRIDAY”!!!! When I awoke next morning I felt like Shit on a Stick! My chest felt like I had a Sumo Wrestler or two sitting on it and they were taking turns trying to rip my head from my shoulders and pounding me in the gut! My bowels were producing masses of ugly black sludge that looked like it had been scraped off the fifth wheel of an old tractor or tar from some old well-travelled back road and it felt like someone had poured a quart of Gorilla glue down my throat. I thought to run away, but who can run with two fat Japanese dudes in diapers on your chest? I was weak as Hell and fading fast! I abandoned all thoughts of continuing on with my deliveries as planned. I showered,

slid into my jogging pants and an old shirt. I made sure that I had my Health card and stumbled downstairs intending to call an ambulance, while explaining to Godzilla what was going on. Then I remembered that our ever lovely Mag Hag, Tanya, would be dropping Scott off to work soon and got her to take me to The Hospital which happens to be my neighbour. It is close enough to walk and if it weren’t for those two Sumo Wrestlers who were still wailing away on me I would have tried! I made it into Emerge and everything after that was a blur but I knew that I was in good and capable hands as they have already seen me through a heart attack, a stroke and all the other crap that I have gotten myself into over the years! Thankfully, they wouldn’t let the Sumo Wrestlers in because they didn’t have Valid Health Cards but the damage they had already done was substantial and I knew it would take some time to recover. I then got loaded onto a stretcher, stabbed, jabbed, inspected, detected, probed, prodded, poked and processed through the system and eventually, woke up warm and wired and tubed to the hilt cozy in a bed in a nice room and an Angel named Nurse Pearl telling me that I would be alright! She had a brilliant smile, gorgeous eyes and amazing hair and I would have believed anything she told me. So after much testing, scoping and

many other procedures over the next couple of days, they determined that I had a bleeding ulcer for sure but were still unclear as to exactly what else was going on with me. But they were are working on it! The Doctor who did the scoping of my upper tract came by to discuss the results of my scoping and he even had nice colour photos from the tour that he and his crew (One turned out to be an old friend, Donna whom I have known for years. Yes, I seem to run into people I know in the strangest places and times!) had taken down into my stomach showing my ulcer and other highlights! He also took the opportunity to make an observation that perhaps my cougar like physique left something to be desired and surmised that my alcohol consumption and diet may be somewhat responsible for much of my predicament. I, in turn, made the observation that diplomacy and sensitivity may not be his strong suit but he did have some unique photography skills! Anyhow I’m still alive and kicking. The Doctors and nurses here are top notch and I even had the company of my Brother Harl from the Brothers of the Blades staying on the same floor as me for a while there. Harl as I wrote last month has been having some health issues and had been admitted the same day as me. His girl Pam was amazing as she scurried back and forth between the two of us making sure that we were both comfortable. Pam is quite the scrounger and is well aware of where to find all the

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 11

necessities for our stay here and each time she arrived she had arms full of goodies like snacks, books, wash cloths, towels and made sure that our water glasses were full and fresh. Harl and I shared an observation that our hides get well ventilated during our stay here as everyone seems to be armed with sharp objects and always seem to be in search of people to jab. One sweet young lady named Andrea was in charge of keeping track of my blood sugar readings and seemed to appear out of nowhere, armed with her lancet and glucose reader. It got to the point that I could sense her arrival and by the time that I actually saw her I had already selected the finger that would fall victim this time presented and prepared to take one for the team. Monday came and I was feeling a lot better and figured that I would be cut loose. When lovely Nurse Becky with the purple streaks in her hair and radiant smile came in to the room she was saying that

THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 12

the Doctor was heading this way and she figured that I would get my release. I was stoked! I cheerfully packed up all my stuff and had it stacked on the bed and sat there eagerly waiting her arrival, like a small child on Christmas Eve, waiting to hear the sounds of reindeer on the rooftop. When she finally showed up, I patiently fielded her questions but I was to learn that they were still concerned with some of my test results and they would be keeping me a few more days. They had more tests and a blood transfusion scheduled for me. Now I knew that they had my best interest and well-being at heart but I was still disappointed. I put my stuff away and made a call home to break the news to Godzilla and request that she send some stuff to keep me busy and occupied for the duration of my stay. I figured that I might as well be productive and that a stack of paper, a pen, and pencil along with my tablet should do the trick. I had a visit from a pleasant lady named Elizabeth who is in charge of discharging patients and she explained further w h y they wanted to keep me and I knew that it was for my own good. Lovely Nurse Becky came in and I feigned real disappointment, telling her that she had built up my expectations with promises of going home then ripped my heart out. I then feared that I’d hurt her feelings and felt bad as I saw very little of her after that until the Wednesday afternoon after the Doctor had told me I could go home. Gypsy, who had been helping out at the office, she and Harl’s Lady Pam had been bringing me stuff from home and office during my stay and had also volunteered to give me a ride home. She showed up and we were sitting killing time waiting for the final release papers and instructions to be prepared and the IV taken out of my arm. In strolled Nurse Becky. She looked fantastic with those flamboyant purple streaks in her hair and dazzling smile, waving my release papers seductively as she approached. “I wasn’t going to come anywhere near you without these in my hand!” She announced with a laugh. I signed off, got my instructions, they unplugged me from the IV and we were off and running. Gypsy dropped me off at home and I got a great reception from Godzilla and the Wonderdogs! It was great to be home! It was an experience but with the way that I had been feeling the previous Friday morning I knew that I had come in the right place and been given excellent care. The staff here were fantastic and I got to witness the way these dedicated and caring group of people deal with things quietly and efficiently. Especially at night as the come and go almost unnoticed doing all the little things that the patients often don’t even know that were done. I’m aware of the cut-backs and challenges facing our Hospitals, Nurses, Health Care workers and Doctors these days and hope that

they can get these issues resolved. They deserve the full support of our Government because they give their full support to their patients! To the Doctors, Nurses, Technicians, and all involved, thank you very much! I must give a shout out to my good friend Dangerous Doug who didn’t hesitate to go along with Managing Editor Al to deliver a large portion of my run when he heard that I was down and to Miss Kitty for taking over the Norfolk area. Now it was time to make up for lost time! I’d missed Big Al’s Swap Meet in beautiful downtown Dundas. It has always been a favourite event of mine and I had been looking forward to being there this year. I love meeting all the great folks who run it and all the friends that come out in droves in search of bargain prices on elusive parts or just a chance to socialize. I knew JR would be there as this is one of Senior’s favourites as well and he has become a permanent fixture here for years! I also missed Clare’s Annual Open House that coincides with John Clare’s Birthday and Anniversary of the store. Again JR went out to cover this one for us but just went to the Niagara on the Lake location. I try to make it out to say hi to John and his fine crew but just wasn’t up to facing the long drive through snow storms and such! I had deliveries to finish off and a lot of work to get caught up on but was still not 100% and had to pace myself but I got it done as best that I could. TombStones Calendar Feature Shoot It is such a great drive out through the scenic country roads that lead to the fabulous property that is not only the new home of Josh and Maggie but also the great new and much improved digs of TombStones Cycles! This is a dream come true for this very dynamic couple who put so much of themselves into the business! The shop in Richmond Hill had served them well and they made some great contacts and developed a strong, loyal customer base there since

opening in Nov. 2013 but it was time to move onward and upward and look to the future and the future for TombStones Motorcycles since August 2016 is at 7848 Castlederg Sideroad just North of Bolton. You will find it nestled among the trees on a beautiful lot with a pond and lots of room for growth. Since Josh and Maggie are not just the face of TombStones Cycles but the very heart and soul of it, who better to represent the shop in a feature? It was decided that Josh and Maggie would be the focus of not only the article but serve as the models as well. (This is also another first for The Riders Mag as we further change up our format and policies to better reflect our readership. Since I took the helm we have evolved from just the Golden Horseshoe, Southern Ontario to Nationwide. We ran our first Metric bike on the cover. We started the Calendar feature had our first guy and a dog on the calendar and now Maggie will be the first lady to grace the cover on her own motorcycle. There have always been ladies on the covers but it was always a lady on the guy’s bike as that was the policy before I took over!) Anyhow we worked away and got the shoot done and socialized awhile with Josh, Maggie and neighbour Joe discussing plans that they have to make this business bigger and better. Combining your home and business is not always an easy task and it can be a real balancing act at times as one can quite quickly overshadow the other and it can cause problems along the way. Josh and Maggie are a great couple with spirit and enthusiasm equal to

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 13

their love of motorcycles. They treat each other and their customers with respect and honesty and if you combine that with Josh’s natural mechanical ability, skills and talent in this environment, they will thrive and best is yet to come. We have created some real great Support items and will have more on the way. They will be available at the Spring Motorcycle Show, which is another thing that needed immediate attention as we wanted to change things up a bit. My pal Dusty once again showed his keen woodworking skills by making adjustments to our bar set-up. So hopefully everything will function better this time around Inkuisition Tattoo - Part two I had wanted to add some wings to my new tattoo so I made an appointment with Michelle and headed on down to the great little Studio on the Danforth to get it done! The last time I was here was for last Months feature shoot and the shop was closed that day. It was great to have a

THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 14

shop free of the organized chaos that is the norm around here to do the shoot and interviews and such but to get a true sense what the shop is like you need to see them in action. This is a very busy Studio! I arrived before they opened and they already had clients ready to have artwork done on their hides and everyone was busy. Michelle had already drawn a set of wings that looked fantastic and was ready to go so I climbed up onto the big leather bed and got down to it. Owner Trevor had a client in his station, a lovely young lady who was in to get a cover up combined with new artwork that would become a fantastic looking sleeve! It consisted of large dragon, coy fish and flowers and will be a classy piece of art when it is completed. I believe that to see the true nature of anything is to watch it in action in a normal environment and see how it performs. I got to observe Michelle already but had yet to see Trevor in action. It was easy to see why his Studio is busy and has the reputation that it does. There is a great vibe here with warm interaction not just between staff members but the way the clients are welcomed into the group and people who were strangers when they walked through the door seem to develop bonds during their visit here. Trevor’s warm and sincere personality serves him and his clients well as he puts them at ease without being condescending and it was obvious to me as I watched him work on this lady. His incredible artistic talents are only equalled by his patience, personality and incredible “people skills”. These are traits that he spotted in Manager Michelle who is also well suited to this work and has chosen her career well. She works fast and efficiently and had my tattoo done in short order and I was more than happy with it. But with tattoos, at least from my perspective, are never really finished and you can never just get one! I looked at my arm and while thrilled, was already thinking you know, if I was to add this and that it would make more of a statement! I guess it is the artist in me but I’m going back in a couple of weeks. Also while I was languishing in hospital, with a pencil and a stack of paper in front of me and little else to do, I managed to produce a couple of dragons that I was very happy with and figure might look great displayed on my other arm. I showed them to Michelle and she is getting set to do them up for me! The adventure continues! Well that is about it for this month come see us at the Spring Motorcycle

Show March 25 – 26 at the International Centre out by the Airport. Most of our Rider Mag Crew will be out and Donny Peterson will be in the booth selling and signing his books. We will have lots of Mags and all kinds of new Support Gear and check out the new and exciting events and happenings that have been added to The Rideau Rendezvous Motorcycle Rally that is happening this July 14 – 16 in Sensational Smiths Falls as they will be in a neighbouring booth. I did hear from one of our West Coast Representatives, Stacy and she apologizes for not getting a column in this month as she has had a lot going on in her life lately! Not the least of it was the exciting news that she is about to become an “OMA” for the very first time and her oldest Son, Stewart and his fiancé are getting married this July! Great news Stacy and congratulations to all! It is shaping up to be a very busy and exciting riding season if the weather would just co-operate we could get on with it!

Clare’s Spring Open House Clare’s Harley Davidson of Niagara has been around forever, but only in their current location since 2008. They are, by far, one of the most ardent supporters of the Mag over the last 18 years. It’s a family operation and I know they also treat their entire staff as part of the family. Since the Harley shop moved, they have maintained the original shop over on Highway 20 in Fenwick. This was the location of the Harley side since the late 60’s and hold spring and fall open houses every year for as long as I can remember. Clare’s Niagara also host a Bike Night for 13 weeks over the summer, so this is a happening place. They draw a huge crowd for all of their events and offer terrific deals on all the stuff that they can offer. Deals on such stuff as dealer shirts, Harley branded clothing, footwear and of course, accessories and collectables. They must have been offering some awesome deals ‘cause the line to the cashiers at the last two I attended with Senior was significant. I like a deal like just about everybody else, but I don’t know if I’d stand in that line. But then again, there’s always someone you know standing near you, so shooting the shit makes the time pass. Both Randy and Robin were on hand overseeing the event. One of the crucial yardsticks for success at these events over the decades has been the Donut Counter.

They always brought in a lot of really big boxes of donuts from one of the Tim Horton’s whose owner was also a Harley rider. John Clare is Randy and Robin’s father and he told me about this measurement many years ago. I learned that he had come north for the event which he always does, but was not feeling well. So, best wishes to John and his wife Donna on their continued health and John’s speedy recovery. Although, wintering in Myrtle Beach can’t be all that bad, it must be the coming back to the cold that got him. We got Senior out of the truck at the door and got him inside. I parked the truck and led him back through the rows of brand new Harleys sitting on the floor to the Diana Sweet’s Shop in the back corner. We set him up with a coffee and a donut from John’s famous Donut Counter. I must have drank about 3 cups of coffee and I wandered back and forth realizing at one point that I left the 4-ways on when I parked the truck, but didn’t have the keys. Bruce jinxed me by saying “you better turn them off or the battery will go dead in this cold weather”. I thought it was a new battery, but it is the only vehicle besides my softail that hasn’t had a new battery in the past two years out of the 7 of them. Of course, I ran into Sandy who usually helps out with pictures. Sadly, she

didn’t have a camera nor did I as I was too focused on getting over to pick Senior up. I ended up forgetting about the flashers. I did eventually go and shut them off, but when it was time to leave, the battery was dead. Gee, thanks Bruce. Gratefully, one of the guys from Lincoln County was just on his way out I had booster cables. He brought his big snazzy F250 over and gave me a boost. The truck has been good since. I’ll try to remember not to leave the four ways on anymore, but with Senior I find myself using them a lot when I drive him around. No matter how you measure it; whether it’s the lot overflowing to the side of the road, or the really long lines for bike stuff, or John Clare’s famous Donut Counter, the place was packed. Everyone was happy, especially the ones that got new bikes. I don’t know for sure, but Randy and his guys are pretty good and some people just come in to check it out and end up upgrading to a brand new ride. Worse things could happen, right? Senior really wanted to see the lovely Lisa, Clare’s Promotions girl for the two Niagara shops, but I was told that she was stationed over at the old shop on Highway 20. I had to get Senior home for his 3pm therapist, so we missed her. Next time, I hope.

One for the road

As Mother Nature shows us just how much of a heartless bitch she is by dropping yet another 15 cm of snow, we were faced with laying indoors and planning for a cruise… .a BIKER cruise. Now I’ve always had a reluctance to the idea of a cruise, ‘cause…well….I’ve seen Jaws. My idea of a vacation is not to rely on my less than exceptional swimming abilities to avoid becoming shark bait. I have also not been one for spending a prolonged period of time in the often-addictive, lifestyle hobby, offered at your local casino. Did I mention that I rely merely on my ability to dog paddle should it require the saving of my life in water higher than knee deep? Let’s move on. In our discussion of the idea of a cruise, we talked about the ‘bring your bike’ cruises that are available. Then a friend of ours mentioned the High Seas Rally Cruise. Bikers only is intriguing. I’m sure, should the time call for it, such as the boat SINKING….I could find a larger fella to use as a floatation device, or hell, I’m sure the silicone that’ll be on that boat in amidst the ladies ‘treasured chests’, could

probably serve as a last minute floating solution. Again...let’s move on. An entire cruise ship that is taken over by none other than us party-hard animals (and my idea of ‘party-hard’ is staying up past 11 pm!). Let’s do this! The mere fact that the cruise takes place in one of the many months that Mother Nature brings her bitch on, is in and of itself, fantastic. Just think of a truly amazing biker event weekend, and times that by 7 days in the Caribbean! This cruise has two great goals in mind. Number one, to have a

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 18

…..with Lil Red

great time surrounded by like-minded bikers and number two, to raise money for Debbie’s Dialysis Fund. This cruise has always included a focus of raising money so that family

and/or friends that are suffering from kidney failure can join this fun-loving group of bikers on the seven-day cruise for a little fun in the sun. Since the chosen patients would require life support kidney dialysis machines to keep them alive during the cruise, the organizers, Dean and Debbie (bikers themselves) found a medical company that would provide just that. These folks have been truly amazing, not only in raising money, but for giving these folks a memory and experience like no other. To top it off, this cruise hits Grand Cayman, Cozumel and Key West. I could use that kind of vacation, minus the sharks. Wait. Is there gators and octopuses there? Dear gawd I’m gonna need some drugs! To add icing to an already double chocolatey cake, they have themed parties such as a Halloween party, a belly smacker contest, a treasured chest event (ladies..line em up), and even a topless man contest!

I, myself have never been on a cruise. And the idea of my ass in a bikini is less than desirable for me. However, December is 8 months away. So I got time to break a sweat, or an ankle, or whatever else that’s fragile and brittle. Now, I won’t say that during this shitty cold season I haven’t been the least bit envious of my fellow riding buddies heading to Daytona for Bike week. But, one thing I’ve learned about being part of this exceptional biker community, is that safe travelling in the company of friends and stranger biker buddies alike will be a given. The one thing

that I truly admire about being a rider, is the quality of people that are fellow riders. A fellow rider will (more often than not) stop if you’re having bike problems. A fellow rider always has your back and although you may have just met them, it’s like they have been your friend for years. Not to say that there aren’t any twats out there, but the majority keep the drama shit away.

And these friendships definitely make the blistery winter season that is the cold hearted bitch of now, much more bearable to take. Our friends Kate and Rod (we met through riding) are joining us on the aforementioned cruise. So during this wintery crap, we now get to sit with our buds at a delicious eating establishment in Stirling that is The Black Dog, and chose our excursions and drink packages unwisely. Now in previous stories, I’ve spoken of a female riding group of ladies called the Windsisters, and they’ve got groups all over Canada. In the summer, it’s fairly common to have a minimum of 4-5 of these ladies riding together on a regular basis. Not to mention the events they have throughout the year, just to catch up, to meet new ladies, and to trade some absolutely funny riding stories. By the way, men sometimes attend and chickens stories have come up. We met up recently at Crabby Joe’s in Napanee. We got together to play a game where you had to read the description on a sheet of paper and find the woman that coincides with the description. Kate, Ellen, Terry, Bonnie, Diana, Kim, Lynette and quite a few others, drank and wandered around, asking questions while having a drink with the lady of the minute. I had no problem walking up to each woman I did not know, introducing myself, shaking their hand and saying “Which one are you?” as I pointed at the descriptions. Being forward and without a buffer between my thoughts and my mouth is one of my strong points. With tables full of ladies, it was easy to mingle and chat. Then pictures, contact exchanges and onto planning for the next event. Coming up is the Spring Breakout on April 23rd, the International Female Ride Day on May 6th (which I will be attending with a few of these wonderful women at Classy Chassis!) and the Burbilly Girls weekend on Jun 16-18. All can be found on Facebook or ask me and I’ll tell ya where to go….ahem. By the time you’ve read this, the 27th Annual International Spring Motorcycle Show will have come and gone.

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 19

I so look forward to these events. Either at the booth or walking around, I get the opportunity to meet up with many of the readers that follow my antics and articles. By the way, a big shout out to Glenn King, ‘cause if not for this gentleman at the January bike show bringing me handfuls of beer nuts while I was manning the Riders Mag booth, I may not have survived. I was starving (and if you follow my writing at all, you’ll know food is a big part of the events for me!). I got to meet so many readers and actually had the chance to talk to them. It is one of the highlights of writing for this great Mag. Oh, and we got some AMAZING new Riders Mag shirts, I mean these are cool little shirts. I got to sport a chick one and I gotta say, they do the ladies justice in the right bra! It’s starting to get busy and I’m already running outta room on my calendar! The events are in the works, and I’m gonna be shameless and mention a few for you to mark on your calendar. Sunday, April 2nd is the next Peterborough Swap Meet. I’ve gone two years myself and never leave empty handed. Greg and the boys from The Redneck MC are holding a Poker Run on May 27th. And these guys plan a nice, long route to ride and have killer BBQ burgers after! Tam and Derek, with their exceptional staff of volunteers, are running the Quinte Ride for Paws Poker Run on June 11th and the Ride for Paws on August 27th! This event

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 20

last year was one of the more memorable ones for me, as it was one of the largest group of riders we’ve ridden with. This is just getting bigger by the year and having them both at Centennial Park in Trenton makes for a great event! The National Memorial Ride is on June 4th. This one is near and dear to my heart and I’m hoping to pay respect to many of our veterans that, if it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t have the liberties that I’m afforded. The Rideau Rendezvous is one I’m looking forward to. This is a brand new event in Smith Falls and runs on the weekend of July 14-16. Great destination ride and looking to be quite the party spot. Ride for Pet Rescues on July 16 is a new one for me. I’m pretty pumped about it cause it’s for animals, and any ride that benefits Veterans, children and animals, I’m all over it! There’s gonna be a bike event coming this summer as well, and CC Cycles in Trenton is behind it. Planning is in the infancy stages but it’s a bike event and I’m

stoked! Always Apsley Rendezvous will be back, as will Wheels, Water and Wings in Bancroft. Oh, and I’ve been contacted recently by Fred Rea at Bikers Alley in Vaughn. He’s carrying our mag now, and I’m heading out his way in a few days to see what kind of biker stuff he’s got. I mention these as they’re just at the top of my head for the moment, and I have full intentions of attending. If you have an event, or want to advertise for something of interest to our biker buddies, catch me by email or on facebook! After that last blast of Mother Nature’s temper tantrum on us here in New Brunswick, it looks like spring is just around the corner, finally! We got a chance to sneak into Carter Customs to check out how the “raffle shovelhead” was coming along. Ian let me grab some pics of the new paint scheme that he designed for this ride. I thought I would be able to report on at least the colour, but depending on the angle that you look at it, it seems to change colour at any angle under the light! I can tell you that it is a very shiny deep profile metal flake. Lucky for me my new bike (‘cause I bought the winning ticket – ya right!), which will be drawn at the Riverview bike show on Apr. 29th @ 3:00 pm, got finished and I was sent a shot of the finished project! What a beautiful piece of workmanship. (By the way I have said “my new bike” with just about every bike raffled off at “Biketoberfest” in Ontario since it’s conception, without any luck!). See you all on the 29th in Riverview! By the way I hear that there are a few tickets left (out of 300 total). So, if you want a chance, get a hold of any Bacchus member, Carter Customs, or myself, and we will try to get one for you. They’re only 50 bucks a ticket.

The new look for J.H. Stewart Ltd. The Boss & I recently took a drive up to J.H. Stewart Ltd. Harley Davidson to check out their new rebuild (not a bike, but a whole damn business!). We were in awe when we stepped into an L.E.D. setup and a whole new layout of the new Harley Davidson showroom, which is completely redone from the new flooring, up

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 21

departments, complete with dressing rooms and mirrored viewing area, all staffed by great people. While we were in the main showroom we drooled over the centerpiece custom Harley. Junior let me know that it belonged to his son, James. Jamey is also part of the management team and has named his beautiful ride “The Money Pit.” I think we all know what was going through his mind (and wallet) when he named her! Then it was through the new but not completed, Honda power works and Suzuki section, which I’m sure will be as impressive as the “Grand Showroom”, into the new service area, complete with an inside reception area where Mic will go over your ride with you inside and address your problems before it goes into Bill’s playpen (the new service shop) for service. Upon completion your ride will be washed &

the walls and over the ceiling complete with super lighting to show off the best H.D. has to offer! We met up with “Junior”, the proud owner, and while he gave us the grand tour, he explained to me that he wanted his operation to be a leading “1 stop motorcycle enthusiast store”. Along with the grand showroom, he has incorporated accessory, safety, clothing and bling

THE RIDERS MAG ---- PAGE 22

dried before you ride off! Junior also has plans for a pre-owned area in another building on the property for buying used and “starter” bikes. Upon leaving, I joked with Junior about the cost of this completely rebuilt operation, he wouldn’t tell me, but I’m sure it makes his son’s “money pit” bike look like pocket change! Well that’s it for now. Hopefully the bikes will be out far after this edition comes out! Don’t forget to catch Rob’s write up in this issue to catch up with N.S. Atlantic Jeff signing off. Be well!

Back in January, I set a new riding goal for the year. It’s one where I would try and complete at least one ride a month for the calendar year. So far I’m two-for-two, which is quite incredible for being a resident of Nova Scotia. Fingers crossed, the storm that is approaching from the Northeastern United States (as I write this) and is supposed to drop 30 plus centimeters on us, will be cleaned up before the end of the month so I can get my March ride in. It goes without saying, I am sure all of you are as excited as I am to get rid of this winter, get the maple syrup flowing and those “V” twins revving! I stopped in on Terry Rafuse and Rick Jollymore to check on their trike build. Ricks garage looks out onto the Northumberland Strait, on the Sunrise Trail that passes through the quaint little village of River John. The Sunrise Trail is a beautiful biking route that takes you all along the North Shore of Nova Scotia, starting when you enter our beautiful province at Amherst and takes you in and out of beautiful ocean views all the way up to the base of the Cabot Trail which is world reknowned as one of the most scenic rides in North America. River John has a long history with the sea, at one time it was a booming shipbuilding port and its residents have maintained its connection through the lobster fishery. Not surprisingly, Rick’s shop is surrounded by fishing traps and gear. The trike could be found sprawled out in one part of this very Maritime setting. The shop itself was typically laid out, cluttered like any good working shop with bits and pieces of any number of bikes, old bags, fenders, chrome and pictures of once owned bikes, builds and good friends. This is the kind of shop that sees friends and neighbours drop in anytime to shoot the shit. Terry was hoping to have the paint finished when I arrived, but true to his creative nature he couldn’t settle on a basic two-tone job. He had to work it a bit more and as a result the clear coating and assembly still needs to be done. The trike itself is an 1800 Suzuki Boulevard front end morphed with a ’74 Chevy Nova rear-end. Every aspect of the trike was done by this duo and I was impressed to hear how they carved and shaped construction Styrofoam to produce the molds for all the fiberglass work. The rear of the trike was most impressive in its size and design. Looking at it’s lines, it was impossible to see any imperfections in its lines or symmetry. The front fender design also adds to the overall impression of the build. Once the project is assembled and on the road I will include a photo. Rick and Terry’s passion for what they do is obvious. It has strengthened their friendship and the biker community. Keep up the good work! Keeping with the North Shore theme I met up with Mark Trenholm of East Wallace who is the proud owner, THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 23

operator, builder, handyman, and toilet cleaner of the “Biker Only” East Wallace Motorcycle Campground. www.eastwallacemotorcyclecampground.com

It is located on Route #6 of the Sunrise Trail. Mark has been open for two years, but building it for 8. It has been a life-long passion to turn land left to him by his great grandfather into a mecca for bikers. A biker himself and a lover of camping have combined the two to

produce a 22 lot campsite. Each lot can comfortably fit three tents and with a basic rate of $25 a lot and $5 for each additional adult it is very reasonably priced. The campground is augmented with 4 huts that are tipi-shaped with a queen-sized bed to get you off the ground. If you suffer from some aches and pains and the ability to predict weather with your knee or hip this is a welcome luxury. Each hut has a cooler, a Coleman stove complete with pots and pans; all you need is your sleeping bag! The huts go for $50 a night which is considerably cheaper than THE RIDERS MAG ---- PAGE 24

a motel and you have your own little porch to sit with your feet up and enjoy a refreshing beverage. Services also include a small canteen with the basics such as ice, coffee, mix, and more. It has walk-in shower facilities, laundry facilities (which is always welcome on a long ride), WiFi and he is hoping to have built for this summer a screened-in clubhouse where everyone can hang out. Don’t forget to sign the Biker Wall when you come to visit! The Cammpground is hosting ToadStock 2017 Summer Rally on August 12th this year. Mark hopes it will grow into an annual “Woodstock” for bikers. ToadStock is sponsored by the amazing organization Bikers Down Society www.bikersdown.com. They are a not-for-profit organization established by bikers to provide assistance to motorcycle enthusiasts in need, regardless of their age, make of bike or riding club. The weekend will see lots of rides, activities and Bike Games. To kick it off, registration for the poker run to the campground starts at 10am at one of our Mag distributors Riding in Style Leather www.ridinginstyleleather.ca Kickstands up at 11am to head for East Wallace.

This past month was the Halifax Bike Show March 3rd-5th. It was nice to see lots of amazing customs and paint and have a chance to talk to a few builders, shops, rallies and charity organizations to help spread the word that The Riders Mag is hoping to increase its presence in Nova Scotia. It appeared to be really well attended and had great energy. I generally felt that it was far more impressive than the Moncton show. A few events that are coming up in

Nova Scotia in the next month or so include: a biker swap meet at the Louis Millet Centre in New Minas April 15th 10am-3pm; Bikers Down Flea Market at the Sydney River Firehall on Saturday the 29th; Flea Market 10am-3am and the dance from 9am-1pm. The “Big One” that really kind of signifies the start of the riding season here is the Blessing of the Bikes in Truro on May 6th 11am-1pm. This is where hundreds of bikes will converge on Victoria Park and shake off the cobwebs of the winter and prepare for another riding season. Check out their Facebook page! Pray for warm weather and dry, saltfree roads. Can’t wait to feel that wind on the knees on a daily basis! Rob Barrett www.rob@theridersmag.com

Kicking off the season this month in Calgary was the Steel Horse Social able. Main event organizer Josh Toney was on hand and hands on with a busy night at Woodys Tap House with a near capacity crowd. I had a great time myself, challenged with trying to catch up to Josh to steal a moment of his time. When I asked Josh what he thought of the fruits of his labours, his reply was quick. This event was a complete success. “I couldn’t have done it without everyone’s support” he said, “I was totally blown away with the attendance”. The live auction went better than he ever could have imagined. They raised approximately $6,200.00 for the Veterans food bank. Even the 50 – 50 winner took home $500.00. “It was truly amazing to see the generosity of the Southern Alberta Motorcycle Community” added the ecstatic organizer. Most of this could not have happened without the help of so many sponsors. Woodys Tap House, Destination Cycles, One Broken Biker, Lucid Customs, Calgary Harley Davidson, Cycle Works, Precision Frame Works, Stampede Boot Company and Ride Dogs Ride to name a few

THE RIDERS MAG ---- PAGE 26

that stepped up to the plate to make this event a great one for a great cause. It was amazing to meet new friends and to see so many familiar faces. Also in attendance was representation from almost every MC and RC in southern Alberta. The support and community that we share here in this province makes it truly one of the best places to call home. As much fun as the Social able was, it always comes back to getting things done. A big part of this new commitment is getting The Riders Mag out to the people who it matters the most to, the riders. Supporting our community and connecting us in our common interests is at the heart of this endeavour. From my home near Drumheller, I have enjoyed my travels

in trying to establish a distribution group. For now, in Drumheller, copies of the Mag can be picked up at Top Rocker Motorcycle Gear, The last Chance Saloon out in Wayne and the Newcastle bar and Badlands Choppers, all very rider friendly establishments. Around Alberta, I have approached almost every Harley Dealer in the province except for Edmonton and Lethbridge, hoping to add to the endeavour. I know this will change with spring budgets coming up so I will keep my fingers crossed. I will keep you informed. Just seeing how everyone is preparing for the 2017 season brings on an intense excitement for some of the events going on locally. Some of these events I will hopefully include are the Calgary Motorcycle Awareness Ride, May 28th and the Drumheller Motorcycle awareness ride June 3rd, which is put on by yours truly. Like all rides, everyone welcome. Yeah, I know that May

is Motorcycle Awareness Month, but one week into June, Three Hills hosts a massive car / bike show that just can’t be missed. That is when it takes place with a planned stop for all to take in the Three Hills Cruise Night Show and Shine. June 4th is Two Wheel Sunday in Calgary, which is another excellent event open to all with plenty of vendors and related attractions. One Broken Biker has the Spring Run June 10th in Calgary. July 8th is Motorcycle Madness held in historic Wayne (AB) spilling over to most of Drumheller. July 14th will be the 10th annual Run To The Hills in Two Hills. July 8th for southern Alberta and 23rd for Northern Alberta for the Ride For Sight. As you can see, way too many to list here so that will bring me to my next project, setting up a Face Book page for The Riders Mag Alberta. I know, not too difficult, but still another step to accomplish.

With the wintery roads persisting and spring around the corner I am hoping to get some of this preliminary stuff out of the way so when the riding weather hits, it will be time to ride, attend the different events and take it all in. In the mean time, those fortunate enough to slip a ride in please play it safe out there. We all know spring road conditions can be somewhat suspect and as always remember that the cagers just aren’t used to seeing two wheels on the road, so again, please enjoy with caution. Also, just a heads up, I have an official Riders Mag email address, if you would like to send me some info, please use dan@theridersmag.com. No change on the phone number (403) 443 3126. Well for now, let’s keep it real, all. Dan T.

These include buttons, dam snaps that don’t say done up, broken threads on seams, buckles, laces, soap sticky zippers, dry rotted rain suits and the likes. If it does need repair you’re going to have it back quicker taking it in now, and less expensive alternatives for replacement than if you wait till May (not to mention the aggravation). Nothing worse than when the weather brakes and you are just not ready for it.

Windsor Motorcycle Club 87th Annual Stag January 28, 2017-Moose Lodge Windsor Ontrario

Getting Gear Ready…

Well folks it is, March 14th. As I sit here and tap out this to you, my outdoor weather station is reading fricken’ -7 ….far cry from some of that fantastic freaky 65+ degree warm riding weather we had in February! If you didn’t do a good once-over on your riding gear at the end of the 2016 season, while waiting out Mother Nature to kick into spring mode, it is still a perfect time to break out all your gear and get “er” done. Get those leathers, boots and gloves cleaned and water proofed with the elixirs you have found to work best. Check for any repairs or replacement of items that just have seen better days.

THE RIDERS MAG ---- PAGE 28

For this event I had to get insider information, it is a Strictly Stag Event -No Exceptions! I even thought of trying to get a job as a waitress for the night at the Moose Lodge so I could get in. It was a no go. The Windsor Motorcycle Club Originally started running observed trials jointly with Michigan Riders and Clubs and presenting trophies. Still today they recognize unique riders for their unique goals. This is not a brand-specific membership. They’re not worried about what people ride; it’s the goals they obtain riding it! This Event highlights accomplishments within. Some of these members have been part of this for 40 and 50 years, traveling from as far away as North Carolina and Florida to attend the Banquet, yearly. Bob Williams at Arrow Racing, has continuing this Stag Banquet Tradition for the past 25 years with his Master of Ceremonies, the one and only, Cheyenne. With over 100 in attendance, a great meal, lots of giggles and grins. Some of this year’s trophies were awarded to the following: Drag Racing: Tom Trupp (Suzuki Hayabusa) and Denis Patrick (Kawasaki Ninja H2R) Longest Distance: Charles Fider-Key West, Florida to Deadhorse, Alaska and back 19,000km (and I do believe that was done in 21 days, which ties the 1983 CMA record on a BMW). Can you say Iron Butt? Congratulations to all of the Members of the Windsor Motorcycle Club for inspiring us to be unique and turn our dreams into accomplishments. Sorry no photos on this one, but big thanks to my insider Cheyenne for the above info! Keep’in it Simple Kathy Troiani

EROSION – Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines it as: the process by which something is eroded or worn away. My lifestyle, read – YOUR lifestyle, is currently undergoing the corrosive creep towards endangered species status due to local officials (barraged by the paranoid pressure of law enforcement) ignoring the truth and trampling on our basic civil rights. The OCC&I are constantly outing these blatant efforts to prejudice society towards bikers. My column last month detailed two motorcycle events that foster this discrimination. I am forever amazed by the attitude of these so-called biker/ organizers towards 1% er’s. This is what happens when dummies prove the proverb that ‘a little knowledge is a dangerous thing’. Many choose to believe the definition (bandied about by law enforcement and bastardized by the media) that a 1% symbol designates criminal intent. Smells like pure LE/Hollywood bullshit, Eh, Ollie? The 1% symbol is an individual statement of a full-time commitment to the biker lifestyle…. nothing more. Posers or weekend warriors need not apply. Truly, if a 1% symbol designated preponderance towards criminality then hundreds of police, priests, child coaches, politicians, leaders of industry, etc. need to be sporting it on their attire. The truth is….every segment of our society harbors individuals who seek to commit acts of criminality. So, what is the exact percentage of criminals compared to the worldwide population? The number is fluid but U.S. Sen. Jim Webb stated at a conference, “We have 5 percent of the world’s population, 25 percent of the world’s known prison population.” This statement was declared true by www.politifact. com . As we know this to be a fact of life – then why are bikers being singled out for erosion? Because we fit the profile. We’re an easily identifiable minority, different from mainstream society, and a lifestyle which has been vilified by the media and stereotyped by Hollywood. We all know they never get it wrong! Ignoring the absence of malice rules, media subscribes to the doctrine – ‘Barrage the fuckers with half-truths, innuendo, and propaganda until they fall into line with your ideology.’ Truth be damned, sensationalism is the order of the day for 21 st Century society, Eh Ollie! Sadly, the majority of society believes that what is delivered by the mainstream media, or revealed on social media is gospel. Prince Edward Island – with fearful haste to return to a Draco-

nian society – is seeking to outlaw structure fortification and the wearing of body armor (does this include LE?) and also seeking a province-wide ban on the wearing of club “colours” in bars and restaurants. This backward governing body has swallowed the Kool-Aid of law enforcement’s depiction that savage hordes of bikers will ravish the populace and replace the tranquility of ‘Anne of Green

Gables’ life with a ‘Mad Max’ version of Armageddon. It appears that paranoia has replaced common sense in the island’s provincial legislature. Historically, oppression techniques provide zero crime prevention and usually results in the persecution of lawabiding citizens. If this is made law then ( in my humble estimation) P.E.I. will always be synonymous with the demise of Canadian civil liberties. This month’s featured OCC member club is Bikers Church (Kawartha Lakes). The Club/Ministry was started in 2002 by Reverend Rob Dale, who founded the first Bikers Church chapter in Ottawa, Ontario. Within a few months, Kawarthas Biker Church was founded with Pastor David Neals at the helm. Kawarthas Bikers Church was designed by bikers for bikers. From the beginning, KBC was a refuge where bikers could come for fellowship and worship; or seek help to conquer the excessive social evils that befalls many of our breed. From the very beginning, Kawarthas Bikers Church members experienced the exact same discrimination, suffered at the hands of law enforcement, that all of us in the life have experienced…..Kawarthas Bikers Church paid its dues and earned its street creds from the school of roadside justice. Today, KBC members are always ready to assist bikers and offer fellowship – and always ready to lend a sympathetic ear concerning the problems facing bikers and their families. All sensitive conversations are held in the strictest of confidence - between the Pastor and the immediate family. Kawarthas Bikers Church and Pastor Dave also conduct weddings and funerals - a full service shop that can marry you and bury you. All scorching aside, everything is conducted with the utmost respect and decorum. Kawarthas Bikers Church extends an open invitation of welcome to all bikers, and their family members, wishing to attend their events such as pot luck dinners, weekend rides, occasional evening rides and all KBC charity events. Kawarthas Biker Church has 2 locations, one in Peterborough and the other in Bancroft. Need more info? www.kawarthabikerschurch.com Rooster Rider OCC Treasurer

Owner Josh Fairhall has been working in the Motorcycle industry for 24 years honing his natural mechanical abilities, gaining knowledge, experience, credentials and credibility. He is a fully licenced, Red Sealed Certified and trained Technician. He dreamed of opening his own shop some day and in 2013 circumstances indicated that the time to make that dream a reality was at hand. TombStones officially opened their doors in Nov. 2013 in Richmond Hill and soon established themselves as a major presence in the Motorcycle Scene. Word of Josh’s incredible mechanical ability, knowledge, honesty and reliability spread rapidly and gained the shop a large and loyal customer base. The shop had come a long way in a relatively short period of time due primarily to the talents and personality of Josh but combined with the support and business acumen of partner and soulmate Maggie they are a formidable team. But now they were faced with a new reality. They had outgrown their present location and the search was on for a new home for them and the Shop. Opportunity once again came knocking when they found a great house with a fully functional automotive shop on an awesome piece of land North of Bolton. It was perfect for both their personal and business needs so they jumped on it! So in August of 2016 they moved into their new home and opened the doors to TombStones Motorcycle`s new and improved location at 7848 Castlederg Sideroad, Bolton Ont. Moving a fledgling business isn’t always advisable as customers can be fickle and a good business can go bad quicker than it was established. In this case, his customers decided that a few miles were a small price to pay to maintain a relationship with a top notch mechanic who they entrust with their motorcycle. Besides that, it is a nice ride and we normally look for any excuse to take a ride in the country! Any worries that they may have had soon dissipated as the phone started ringing and the driveway and shop were soon seeing a constant

flow of motorcycles. They are also drawing in new clientele from the local area and business has been showing steady growth. The move proved to be a cost saver as well as a time saver. There is no longer a commute from Newmarket to Richmond Hill allowing more time that Josh can spend wrenching and taking care of business. The additional space has also allowed for the addition of a truck and trailer so he can now do pick-up and delivery of motorcycles. It also opens the door for more services and future plans, such as a bike wash that will be a real benefit to the shop and their customers. The New and Improved TombStones Motorcycles will be a Spa for your Harley and the size of the property will also provide a cordial atmosphere and a comfortable space for their customers to relax and enjoy the clean country air while they wait for their motorcycles. So it will be a relaxing experience for all concerned! They will also be able to host ride nights and hope to become a weekend ride destination. It could also be an excellent poker run stop. Josh has built some amazing motorcycles and done some incredible performance work over the years and firmly believes that it is not enough for a motorcycle to just look good it has to run better than it looks! He prides himself on his ability to get the most out of an engine and with attention to reliability and safety! TombStones can do everything from ground up custom builds, turning 88s into 98s and 96s into 107s with turnkey reliability, to regular maintenance and repairs. They are a full service shop specializing in Harley-Davidson Motorcycles but will do stuff like certifications, oil changes, tires, batteries etc. on any make and model. They treat all their customers fairly and with respect. So if you are looking for a place to take your Harley-Davidson take a ride out through the beautiful countryside North of Bolton to Castlederg Sideroad and look for the distinctive sign at the end of the driveway at #7848. You won’t be disappointed.

Big AL’s Swap Meet 2017

by

JR

I’ve been taking Senior around to events since I retired. He moves pretty slowly these days, so it was nearing 11am when we arrived at the Dundas Community Center for Big AL’s Motorcycle Swap meet. Despite our arrival time, the building was still swamped with buyers. This has been a popular meet for as long as it has been going on. I don’t have the definitive details, but I believe it was going on pre- magazine (over 18 years) and paused for a short while. Then it was restarted in the early days (I haven’t looked it up but probably about 2000 maybe 2001). I remember the early days when we used to set up at events for the Mag like we did at pretty much everything. Back in those days, there were many of the same familiar faces among the shoppers and the vendors. Over time some vendors come and go but there are some that just keep going on, others are individuals or collectors who feel the need to clear out the shop or garage every couple of years (or decades) and move some of their excess parts that fit bikes that they haven’t owned in years. There was no shortage of folks that I knew and most of the conversations started with “I thought you retired”. Yeah, I did retire more than 4 years ago, but I still have my paper route and I do still write some articles and cover some events. Plus, Senior still wants to get out and the guys at the meet were all glad to see him as they acknowledge he is a Legend there and hands out mags. He did a damn good job too moving almost all the mags I had left over from my deliveries so it was worthwhile. I made my way through the event trying to get my usual crowd shots and stopped to talk. After the “I though you retired” question the second was usually “how’s senior?” “Go see for yourself” I’d tell them. “He’s sitting out front with the guys handing out mags”. I kept running back and forth to check on him to make sure he was behaving himself and had mags to hand out. Despite the hour, the place was still quite packed and it was a challenge moving back and forth. There was a lot of product moving out of the building. Of course it was a decent, mild day and I had cho-

If you’re looking for a deal on that thing you’ve been missing and thinking about all winter long, or that thing that fell off your softail (‘cause we all know that everything on them solid mounts vibrates loose), this is the place to check. They have a great slate of vendors on hand and all the product you could want, whether you ride a newer fat head and evo or a shovel you can probably find what you need. On the other hand you just might find that thing that you didn’t know you needed or had seen on someone’s ride somewhere at some point in the past and always thought it was the thing you needed. Well, there’s a good chance you will find it at this event, but the rule is get there early and line up cause almost everything at these swap meets are one of a kind. Also, bring a pocket full of cash. See you at next year’s Big Al’s Swap Meet.

I headed down to Port Dover for the January 2017, Friday the 13th rally. I arrived on the 12th as usual. I spent my summers in the area when I was a kid and am out that way. We have a shack on the lake, so needless to say I have seen a lot of changes over the years. I have been to all manner of Friday the 13th in Dover over the past 25 years or so and am proud to say I only missed one that was a few years ago in March ‘cause I was in Florida with my teenage kids. I knew that it could be a big deal or a complete bust, depending on how the weather comes down in the Great White North, seeing as the forecasters never seem to be able to put down an accurate guess. So, I brought a couple things with me to eat and dropped all my crap off at my shack and headed to town. As expected there were a lot of die-hards, hardcores and locals already populating the town. My experience has always been Thursday is better cause there’s less gawkers and tourists. I grabbed a bite to eat at the newly renovated South-

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 40

side Louie’s (formerly Arcade Wade’s & Captain Billie’s). It was dead as a doornail for a Thursday night and I had my own personal waitress. The food was good and once I had a few ice teas I headed out to roam town and see if I could find any ladies to flash their titties. To put it bluntly it was a no go, but I did run into an old friend that I hadn’t seen in nearly 2 decades. We had a few drinks, packed up and headed back to my shack. I headed in Friday morning and actually beat the Clare’s bus and crew of sick. It’s probably a good thing that the Harley Niagara crew weren’t driving ‘cause they arrived before noon and they were already well on their way, but then isn’t that the great thing about having someone else do the driving? Have your self an ass kicking good time for sure. Not surprisingly, I ran into lots of friends, fans, readers, and associates over the course of the day. Wayne from Niagara who I rode with in several Eagles Nest rides showed up asking about Senior saying his father had passed away. His mother was former writer for the mag during my tenure. I had met his mom before and talked to her on the phone, but she said it was the first time she had made it in for a Friday the 13th as Jon always rode and she couldn’t manage getting on his bike. The lovely Lisa from Clare’s was leading her crew of sick through town. The Clare family from John and Donna through Robin and

Randy and Robins kids were all on hand I always have a fabulous time talking with John. He was one of our earliest and strongest supporters here at the Mag and he recently made the investment to purchase retail property on Main Street in support of the event, Clare’s of Port Dover shirts and also Friday the 13th shirts. I headed back out to the shack later in the afternoon to keep an eye on the markets which is one of the things I do these days. Then, I headed back into town early evening and ran into the infamous Road Runner and his wife Mary. He put the crowd at around 2500, and he figured a couple hundred bikes. It was a little higher estimate than I had calculated but he’s been at it longer than me and he was nice enough back in 1999 to come by and invite us over to his place to educate us on the history of Friday the 13th back when we were newbies. I had my customary dinner at the Erie Beach Hotel indulging in the perch platter although these days since I don’t have a crew I had to eat alone but its part of the new normal. I visited the bars and had the great pleasure of running into the lovely Cathy from Cathy’s Country Kitchen. She’s a terrific gal and a great cook (she made fabulous soup). Too bad her landlord was so difficult. That gal is not just another pretty face. I told her husband I would gladly steal her away if he took his eye off her. I always expect

to see Black Bart in town. He lives close and is a Toronto boy that has lots of great stories. He is a lifelong rider and we featured his pan way back when. If I was gonna guess I think it was December 2000. That fabulous gal who worked at the turkey point hotel modeled on his bike. (I am sorry that I cannot remember your name it will come to me two minutes after I click send to critter). She rides too and has a beautiful Heritage Springer and a great ass (sorry I am too honest). It wasn’t too long before I was worried that I was drinking too much that the bar maid came over and said when your ready for another beer your friend wants to buy you one. Dirty Nick from B.R.O. Niagara is always around and

never misses buying me a beer, I am conservative cause I just don’t drink and drive. So I let all the guys go and headed back to the shack. Sorry guys, I failed miserably at getting any titty shots, but I am used to having a driver. I do better in the summer cause I can set up at my bike and catch the ladies as they wander up and down the street. Thanks to all of you guys for the help getting your old ladies to whip ‘em out! I give ‘em a dated shirt and I did have some 2017 shirts done up. I’ll be out there this October. See y’all then.

Well, the bike show season is in full swing and the riding season is fast approaching. For those of you that haven’t made up your riding schedule yet for this year, there are a lot of activities to choose from. For those of you that would like to get your event noticed and covered, now would be a great time to get a hold of The Rider’s Mag to book it, since this year is going to have a Steller amount of events happening in the Great Northern Ontario. With only brother Rebar and myself (so far, looking for more) covering all these events some might end up with less coverage as they should get. At this time, I would like to introduce, what is promised to be one of the areas Great Rallies put on by two well established biker friendly locations, Signature’s Restaurant and The Horse Tavern in Chelmsford, Ontario. The day will start off with a quick breakfast then a scenic ride to the famous French River area for some cool refreshments then back to Signatures Restaurant for a special dinner. It will be followed by festivities at The Horse Tavern down the road where entertainment will be set up to please everyone. This new and promising event will be held on June 24th , so SAVE THE DATE and come support the Heart & Stroke Foundation while showing strength in our community. The Rider’s Mag will be there in full support of this one, covering the excitement and taking tons of pictures, as both these establishments are full supporters of the Mag! Thank you! At this time I have to say that I receive a lot of comments and criticism for some of the material I write about. But, it humbles me when I receive personal texts from a few people to whom I respect a lot in the biker community for their dedication and their commitment to the cause. Here are a couple: “Good article this month… like the one about brotherhood.;)” and “I don’t read much but when I do read your articles all the time and go through withdrawals waiting for the next month’s edition”. These really fuel me up and put lead in my pencil to keep going strong. These are only a couple of examples. Others show their support in various ways. Thank you brothers for these comments and words of support. Much appreciated. You guys are the driving force behind The Rider’s Mag, North Ontario. This month’s article is limited to allow you some time to get out there and get those rides ready for the

upcoming riding season but I do have a quote to end it dedicated to all my silver haired comrades out there:

“A Biker’s hair doesn’t turn to grey, it turns into chrome! “

Grand Opening at the New Sudbury Outlaws MC Club

House by Brother Rebar Its winter, but a nice mild morning here in the Great White North. The camera battery is fully charged and ready for action. The Sudbury chapter of the Outlaws MC are working on the finishing touches to their new club house and I will have the pleasure of attending as The Rider’s Mag rep.

Looks like there are plenty of parking spaces at the house and across the street. From the parking lot I can see various local establishments. A super location for the house in the uptown area. Should I knock or ring the buzzer? No need, the door opens. The camera system must be in operation. They saw my old grey mug and opened the door for me. Inside I inhale the odour of fresh paint. Work is also being done on the sound and video system. I like the big screen TV

(nice job Redneck). The finishing up work of the bar is done and it looks pro. They are hard at work to ensure the house is in order for the evening event. Time is now tight, but they will get it done. After taking a few pics and a friendly conversation with all who are present, I head out with the intention of being back this evening for the 8:00pm invite. There’s a sign at the exit DO NOT TOUCH THE FU%*##$ DOOR. OK, please let me out and I will be back this evening. Thanks, love and respect but I have to go. Riding home, I drive by one of the Tim’s on Lorne street. Looking over the 4 foot snow bank I see a decker in the parking lot. It looks like Big Mike is out again. It sure is a pleasure to

ride in the Great White North in February. 8:00pm. Time to bum a ride from my dear wife. I’m going to the new club house for business and pleasure. She drops me off right at the entrance like a celebrity. Thanks honey, you’re the greatest. After a successful check and pass through club security and I’m in there. An impressive looking house with an excellent sound system. The volume is set perfect so we all can talk and hear each other. What a big crowd at 8:15 pm, I had no idea we had so many Outlaws and support bikers in Ontario. A great bunch of bikers are here from all over Ontario. Along with the guests the house is packed. It’s a good time talking to the AOA brothers and having a few laughs. We took photos, had a few beverages, and then had an excellent dinner that was catered by Luanne Fugard, who enjoys catering to bike events. Then a few more beverages, telling stories and enjoying the music until about 4:00am. We have a saying in our biker culture: ‘show respect and it comes back to you’. That is so true with this club of 1%ers. Once again it’s time to bum a ride back home. I didn’t even have to ask. Willy can see I’m cooked on both sides and he

offers a ride. Thanks brother Willy; you and I are always there for each other at all times. And that my friends are what brothers do. Respect to the Outlaws and supporters who attended the grand opening of the house. Looking forward to hooking up again. Thanks for the invite. Ride safe and look out for the patches of sand. Rebar Mike.

Friday night in Calgary, AB was a great night for my good friend Selene’s birthday party down at the Chainbreakers RC. A big thank you to Laurie and Meeker. The beer was flowing and the laughter and music was loud with a lot of dancing going on. It was a fantastic evening! I was just going down to the house for an hour or so to make an appearance but what ya know, my appearances lasted until 2:00 AM in the morning and I was the last to leave. I had a blast! It was great seeing so many old friends and meeting new people. Not only do the Chainbreakers RC host birthdays and weddings, my favorite is when they do the Veteran Run. This is a short sweet story and I will be writing more about Chainbreakers RC. Until then, full throttle and hair straight back and remember to keep that rubber side down MLLH&R. Island Angie

Loss of a loyal brother.

It is with great sadness that I write this as I lost a great friend and brother suddenly with the passing of Darrel H. McPherson. Darrell as known as “Goober” to family and friends was a dedicated dad, brother and loyal friend. He was a hardworking man who knew how to burn the midnight oil. He was an amazing storyteller, a famous biker with the biggest heart of gold and a soul that shined through as well as a smile that lit up any room. He looked after everyone else first; his family was his pride and joy. Goober will be missed by many and loved by many who knew him. He left behind an amazing lady, Leigh Croney, three daughters Jessica, A.J & D.A, two grandsons Legend and Hunter, two brothers and a sister (Cheetah, Lick & Kim), his parents as well as many great nephews and nieces and extended families and friends. He was a brother and a friend and will surely miss being able to see him every day or every year. What l would give to sit and talk to him for a while, leaving the rest of us with his amazing memories that will never be forgotten and will always brighten our hearts. It is just so hard to have him gone and my heart is so heavy it hurts. I’m angry and frustrated and most of all am very sad. He’ll never be forgotten. He’ll be part of all we do. So, until we meet again my friend, keep your knees in the breeze, ride on ride free you are an angel up the above with no more pain and no more sadness. Until we meet again. This isn’t goodbye it’s only see you later.... Gone but Never forgotten.

From Goober’s lady, Leigh Croney writes

I don’t think I have ever met a man more loved or respected than Darrel. I was always in awe of him, and he was completely unaware of the reputation and respect that he had. I don’t quite think he cared so much how popular he was. He was a down to earth man who’s biggest success and greatest joy in life was his 3 daughters, Jessica, AJ & Darrelann. He always made sure that his mom and dad weren’t lonely and always made time to visit with them. He loved his brothers and sister. His family truly was his biggest love. He was the hardest working man I have ever met. He was up before dawn and back after sunset and didn’t have a cushy job. He was a car hauler, crawling around on the rig putting cars on and off and driving many miles a year. We met in Sturgis in 2012, the year his daughter rode her own bike there for the first time, which made him pretty proud. Although we met there, we didn’t actually really meet until a month later at the Sweetgrass Rodeo in Sweetgrass, Montana. He was playing the rodeo games with his daughter and the “Honey I’m Home” game came up, I told him he probably shouldn’t play that

one with his daughter, and he smiled big at me and said ok I’ll play with you, and that was the beginning of things for us. That smile and those blue eyes, I fell head over heels. We spent many spring and summers riding with friends and each other all over the Calgary area, Vancouver, South Dakota, Idaho, Yellowstone. One thing I was always amazed at was no matter where we went, Goober always knew someone. He was literally known from coast to coast, and there would be someone in every province that would consider him a good friend. There is not many people like that out there, who have that impact on people without even knowing it. He was a true old school biker and always on the bike if he could. He would never leave a man behind, on and off the road. He cared about his friends and family and he made me feel so loved and special (he made everyone feel so loved and special). There are not a lot of people like him out there. He is now riding with his old buddies in heaven that have passed who he always talked about. He is having the time of his life with them and that big, sweet smile on that face of his. Rest in peace my sweet Darrel, you will never be forgotten!!

The month of March is a roller coaster of surprises in eastern Ontario and this year is no different with a week or so of above zero temperatures and a promise of Spring followed by days of bitter cold and a monster snow storm and yet I am happy to report that nothing is stopping our motorcycle community from getting ready to hit the riding season up and running. At every motorcycle event I have attended so far this year the turnout from the public has been a promoters dream. While I know everyone would much rather be out riding by now if you can’t then next best thing is being somewhere inside at a show rubbing shoulders with all the other riders who feel exactly the same way you do. From the messages, phone calls and emails I have received in the last month or two from different clubs and events asking me about advertising in the Mag and wondering if I could personally come to their event to participate this summer I have the feeling that the season of 2017 is going to be one of the best years ever for our motorcycle community. It is always a pleasure to know that people appreciate my dropping by their event or ride to take pictures so that later on I can mention them in my column in the Mag. The truth is that while many of you thank me for what I do I should be thanking you for all the great times and memories we have together during the season. Over the years many of you may have read in one of my articles or posts my mentioning a group called SOAR (Society of Ottawa Area Riders) and all the positive things this organization has been responsible for over the last 30 yrs for our motorcycle community which included the City of Ottawa finally proclaiming the month of May as Motorcycle Awareness Month. They later headed up a

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 46

movement to have the province of Ontario do the same as well because we need more awareness of motorcycles and their riders on our streets and roads. Recently chairperson Mike Bossio aka Bozz, along with other members of the board decided that restructuring was long overdue and that the organization could better reflect the needs of the present day motorcycle community. So they reached out to some of the area clubs to come to an informal meeting and to get their input and discuss what changes they felt SOAR could make to reach some of those goals. It’s always tough to get people out in the middle of winter for anything but much thanks to clubs such as Retreads, TCB, Dedicated Few, Backroads Touring Group and the Ottawa chapter of BACA who did send representatives and while the representative from the Simple Men MC was held up and couldn’t make the meeting but hopefully along with the other clubs will be able to make the next meeting. I have attended a lot of SOAR meetings over the years and I have to say that this one some of the ideas and energy expressed by those present to help become part of the “new” contemporary vision of SOAR was pretty inspiring. Over time there had been some confusion among clubs as to the “area” definition in the name and with that in mind all those present decided that from now on after the title ‘Society of Ottawa Area Riders” we place in brackets the words Eastern Ontario so that in the future clubs from all along the Seaway and up the Ottawa Valley would be made aware that their participation and input from their areas was welcomed. Another idea that would benefit all clubs that host rides was to see what it would take to have one of the many organizations that teach motorcycle safety to provide training on how to be a ride captains or even just refresher courses for those who would like to improve their riding skills. For years SOAR had free information for any club in regards to them creating and having their own rides or events and acquiring special insurance in case they do organize a ride to help protect themselves from liability. Many of the core values of SOAR are still relevant today but just like your motorcycle, everything can use a few new tweaks and some additions to make it run even smoother and go farther. It is important that everyone feel welcome whether you are an MC, RC or don’t wear a patch at all, if you are a group of riders then you should consider contacting SOAR either on the website or on Facebook. Please remember SOAR is open to all riders whether cruiser or sport.

It has become a yearly ritual for some of my Brothers in the TCB and myself to head down to attend the Montreal Motorcycle Show held at the Palais Des Congres de Montreal and as in the past we had a great time at the show. While much of the show is a dealers showing off new models you can be guaranteed that there will be colors and models that you don’t often see in the local dealerships and the real prize is when there are custom motorcycles whether Harley or metric, you will be blown away by the paint and the imagination used to build them. Quebec has some amazing bike builders and painters but sadly not many of them bother to travel outside their province to show off their talents and so many people from Ontario attend this show. Another interesting component of the Montreal show is the large presence of Can-Am Spyders or as some kids call them backward trikes but forward or backward these recreational vehicles have overtaken the province of Quebec. There are touring clubs with hundreds of members on the roads in the summer time heading to one festival or another and more and more are coming here to Ontario. There are a number of companies getting into this market and some of them are powering theirs with Harley motors and while I still prefer trikes with two wheels in the back I have to admit that some of these machines are amazing to look at. Something else you see a lot of at the show are booths promoting touring clubs in Quebec and while we have similar associations in Ontario they are much more prevalent in Quebec. Another thing that is very popular is the companies that book trips all over the world and have motorcycles waiting for you when you get there and planned out tours of what country you choose. I wish more companies like these would market this in Ontario because I think it would become a very popular vacation choice if it was offered. Just saying! During our walk around the show we stopped by many of the booths and especially those of the touring clubs and did our best to promote and encourage them to consider coming to our area in mid-July and take part in the Rideau Rendezvous being held in the town of Smiths Falls. There was a definite interest and I will be in Quebec a number of times over the next few months doing my best to lure riders to come and enjoy the hospitality of Smiths Falls and eastern Ontario. During the conversation we were reminded that this year we did not have a motorcycle show

in the City of Ottawa and that is just plain wrong. We have the numbers and the desire for a motorcycle show but Ottawa is short on locations. The few that exist are very expensive but none the less let’s hope between now and the late Fall there may be some potential promoters out there who might step up to the plate. I know it’s hard putting on a bike show but this city has a hell of a lot of riders and with the right promoters I am sure a new show would be a successful venture. I only mention shows in Quebec that I feel are worth the trip and one show coming up if you like custom bikes with amazing paint jobs and chrome is the Laval Bike & Tattoo Show taking place April 21st – 23rd at the SportXpo. This show usually draws some of the very best of Quebec’s builder & painter community not to mention tattooists and it is only a few hours ride for most folks in our area so I hope to see many of you at the show over the weekend and for those that cannot make it, don’t worry I’ll take lots of pictures and be sure and post them for you to see.

“Crazy” Joe Deevey’s Celebration of Life Every so often I bring to your attention the passing of someone that I feel deserves recognition for their part in the history of motorcycles and their riders in the Ottawa

area. One of our ‘Legends’ has gone on to Valhalla to wait for us all. “Crazy” Joe Deevey passed away recently and I not only had the pleasure of knowing him for a half a century I had the honor to call him a friend and a brother. When it came to living life to its fullest, Joe was an over-achiever and his love of life whether it was motorcycles, hunting, fishing or partying he did it. A short time ago on one of the coldest days of the winter approximately 400 people came out to celebrate his life and to pay their respects to his wife Mouse (Cathy), his two daughters Jo-lyn, Kim and his son Patrick. All those that attended also came to tell their favorite Crazy Joe story including me and throughout the afternoon the hall was roaring with laughter while pictures of Joe over the years flashed on a screen. Younger people always think that bikers were only guys that wore patches

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 48

and if you believed the media well then every biker was a criminal but nothing could be further from the truth. Joe was an elevator mechanic for years, he built bikes and muscle cars and raced both and was a traveler whether to motorcycle shows across the continent or going to places like Africa because Joe Deevey was fearless. When people were with him they became fearless too! Every table in the hall had a binder filled with pictures of Joe from different decades and guests spent the afternoon going through them, recognizing faces of not only themselves but others who have long passed. Traditionally back in the 60’s & 70’s bikers didn’t take many pictures because I think that required we stay still for a moment but Joe’s passing had everyone going through drawers at home and bringing old black and white snapshots to the Celebration. Bozz, Chuck and I along with our wives sat next to the family table and we were joined by Felix (Cycle Salvage) and Doug Taylor (Harley). Not only were we surprised the Felix had brought some old black and white pics from days long gone, one of them showed a young Doug Taylor from about 35 years ago. Next to us at the family table were JD & Rocky who had come all the way from Florida. JD told me that her and Rocky could not have stayed home and missed honoring Joe and being there for Mouse.

Throughout the afternoon younger bikers wandered around paying their respects to their elders and in many cases got to see photographs and hear stories of their fathers when they were younger. Mouse spent hours in the receiving line getting hugs and kisses and condolences from people she knew and likely some she didn’t but she was as much there for them

and they were there for her. I know the family would like to thank each and everyone who came out for Joe’s Celebration of Life but in reality the real thanks goes to Joe who had always been famous for his birthday parties, well he threw one last party and it was the best of all. Until Valhall Joe! LLH&R and most of all Brotherhood! I have a few more events I want to remind you about and one of those is the SOAR gathering at Ottawa City Hall on Saturday April 29th for the Mayor’s Official Proclamation of the month of May being Motorcycle Awareness Month. Starting at about 9:00 am in the morning and while mornings can be kind of cool around this time of year and the actual event is not all that long, I would appreciate it if as many of you attend because if we want the city to be supportive of doing more to keep us safe it figures we should show the city that we care enough to come out and support it. If any clubs or riding associations would perhaps like to set up a table to promote their organization please go to the SOAR group site on Facebook and message them and they will get back to you or you can email SOAR. On a related note I also want to encourage all of you to consider coming out for the 6th Annual 2804 Dice Run

that is held in Casselman Ontario. This event was the brainchild of a former member of SOAR who passed away a year ago, Denis Renaud who was a strong supporter of Eastern Ontario riders. Look for the ad for this event around my column in next month’s issue of The Riders Mag. A must to remember is the Rideau Rendezvous July 14th – 16th being held in Smiths Falls. Put This one on your event calendar because as I mentioned last month this event is an opportunity for our part of the province to finally have what could become a first class event develop within our boundaries. I hope that many of you will consider taking part in this event. You will find adverts for this in the and if any of you would like some further information please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me personally. At The Riders Mag we are all about the people who ride the motorcycles, not the bikes and we want you to be proud that you are Bikers because you can’t get better than that. As always I remind you to support the rides and events that are created by the riders and clubs in your area because they are the same people that come out to support your events and rides. Please remember to show your support for the businesses that advertize in our Mag they are truly Biker Friendly because they have shown support for our lifestyle and deserve our support back. Also if you have an event/ride or you are a business that deals with either motorcycles or the people who ride them you might like to advertise or even become a distributor of “The Riders Mag” and if so please contact me by email. As always please remember that we make our motorcycle communities stronger by making them better! Brotherhood! Bacchus Swap Meet 2017

Full House At Bacchus MC 2nd Annual Swap Meet - Jan 29/2017

My neighbour and riding bud, Mike, and I arrived 30 minutes earlier than the official start at 10am. We were planning to get in early for a sneak peek and avoid the crowd – turns out we were wrong. Already, the doors were open and a lineup had already begun to snake its way down the steps of the Beachville Legion. By the time we entered the hall a good fifty souls were mixing it up with a packed house of vendors. Buyers could expect to find a large assortment of vintage and almost new parts – anything from that sought after carb for a shovel rebuild or a batwing for the latest in HD rides. Prices were fair and the sellers were knowledgeable, friendly and open to offers. I noticed a lot of happy faces on both sides of the table. Vendors hailed from Woodstock, London, the GTA and The Golden Horseshoe. Like Deb, from Bling Your Things. I didn’t know this, but she’s a fearless hacker tracker by day and entrepreneur by night. Others included Matt from Strictly Red Line out of Hamilton, Wayne from W/M Embroidery and Leather in Tillsonburg and Paul from London. I also met Judy (not her real name) from east of Woodstock. She had a nice selection of old school, custom made, men’s and ladies hair bands for sale. Great for those with a long mop

riding in the wind. I would have bought one too ‘cept for my very obvious and rather large bald spot. As we chatted she shared her story of being a single mom raising two kids - nothing unusual in that right? She started her business because she refused to accept social assistance and wanted to set a positive example for her kids. Look for her at your local swap meet. Overall, it was one of the best swap meets that I have attended in a very long time - hats off to Bacchus MC, The Beachville Legion, the vendors and the great support shown by the folks from South-Western Ontario. And if you’re looking for something to do in March check out ABATE’s 6th Annual Pool Tournament on the 18th at Hustler Billiards in London. See you there. I’m outta here but I will leave you with this: When in doubt think of A.O.F. - “Action Overcomes Fear.” Trust me it works in life and in business. Irish

Hope Means Having Nine Lives. Is This True? I write this segment on my 60th birthday and my present to me was submitting my final work for my Doctor of Divinity studies. Milestones indeed and I look back over 13 riding seasons with great pleasure and memories to last my lifetime. I have over nine lives: pastor, student, musician, teacher, fisherman, canoeist, surveyor for Bird Studies Canada, father, biker, and pyrotechnics amateur. It’s that last one that my wife bugs me about. She says, “be careful out there; you’ve used up your nine lives with your cheap Chinese fireworks!” Realistically, the hope of Spring is already upon us and I would echo my wife’s words, “Be careful out there.” We all know what idiots pass for drivers. Then there’s crummy roads, still in a mess from the winter but you already know that. To be honest, what brings me the greatest hope and peace is my spiritual service to the biker community as Bikers’ Church Pastor. My last 13 years on the bike have been dedicated to bringing bikers to faith or simply helping to increase faith in God. I feel like I’ve lived more in these biking years than I did most of the rest of my life! In fact, with Easter in sight and spring flowers already popping up, all kinds of different hopes for this riding season loom large. With regard to my life as I just recounted, I would say that my nine lives ARE my hopes and dreams coming true. But there’s more...Emily Dickenson’s powerful poem, “Hope is the thing with feathers, that perches in the soul, And sings the tune without the words, and never stops at all...” reminds me of the hope I have in my Creator. Google the rest of that poem! Our only hope of Heaven lies in our acknowledgement that Jesus rose from the dead that first Easter. St Paul said in Romans 8:24, “For in hope, we have been set aside for Heaven” and we read in 1 Peter 1:3, “Jesus Christ...has caused us to be born again to a living hope through (His) resurrection.” The word “hope” appears 72 times in the New Testament! There must be a good reason. Those of you who see me often enough know that I do not badger you about your faith; I don’t tend to clobber you over the head with Jesus and the Bible, although I sometimes bring up faith; it’s my duty as a missionary. Yet, you know what I stand for and what I’m “up to” so never hesitate to ask questions or email me or call with a prayer request or other spiritual services needed. Meanwhile, I challenge you to sincerely pray this Easter prayer with me: Our Father in Heaven, I want to believe in you more. I already believe that you raised Jesus on the first Easter. Please accept my small faith in you and make it better. I know you’ve already forgiven my sins. Thank you, in Jesus’ name, amen. Now enjoy the beginnings of a great riding season! See you on the road and may God bless your spring with even greater hope in life. Pastor Ken Williams 905 870 8584 kenang@ cogeco.ca www.hamiltonbikerschurch.com

While most of us are waiting for the angst of spring to croak and the excitement of riding season to kick in, over 130 riders took matters in their own hands to participate in the first annual Grand Prix De Snow on February 19th. Ironically, the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. Even though there was still snow, the temperature hit a record-breaking 11 and the sun beat down all day. By the end of the day, with most of the snow melted and people walking around in t-shirts, the event resembled more of a spring or summer event than a winter one.

Town Moto of Toronto and Lawernce Hacking teamed up this year to run this event that provided people with “an excuse to get out and ride your bike in the winter”, as Andrew McCracken of Town Moto put it. It might sound like an ill thought out idea to have a motorcycle even in the winter, but I can assure you it was anything but. Lawrence has an impressive 50 years of riding under his belt and has been involved in the organization of over 25 motorcycle events, including the first World Enduro Championships in Canada and the annual Overland Adventure Rally. Town Moto also organizes a slew of events at their location in Downtown Toronto that are almost always to capacity. Both parties know what they’re doing and it stemmed from two complimentary mindsets: Town Moto wanted to create a unique event in the winter and Hack-

ings wanted to give to the motorcycle community that has given him so much in his own life. GPDS was held at the Mohawk Inn and Conference Centre in the backyard and wooded trails, tucked away just off highway 401 in Campbellville, ON. When I arrived before the event started, the parking lot was already packed with people unloading their dirt bikes, enduros and vintage bikes. The number of riders and attendees also cleared the expectations of the dozen organizers and volunteers. I attribute this mostly to the promise of a fun and chill event for riders of all skill levels with a non-competitive attitude

towards riding. Of course, the weather helped. The event was p ay- w h at-yo u can, with a recommendation of $10 for non-riders and $20 for riders, which included free raffle tickets and BBQ, with proceeds (a total of $2,050) going towards going to the United Way of Milton. Husqavarna was there with about 8 brand new bikes from 200cc to 450cc for anyone to sign out and rip around on and talk about the different bikes they had. Other sponsors (too many to list) and Town Moto pooled together

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 55

so many prizes, nearly everyone left with something. The races were broken down into categories of experience and equipment with a final all-in run. Each race had its fill of spills on the difficult combination of snow, mud, slush and puddles. In the end, there wasn’t a clean shirt in the house and the ones who were most soiled also wore the biggest smiles. Even the crowd and photographers were wearing part of the track. It was clear from the homemade plastic trophies, (recycled sports trophies with toy motorcycles glued to the top) that this was a nonchalant event. Riders were only competing for the biggest mud-eating grin at the end of the day and bragging rights to the finest wipeout. I talked to dozens of riders throughout the day and I didn’t hear a

single competitive word out of their mouths. Although there were tense moments on the track and some tight finishes, experienced riders and beginners lapped through the course howling in joy and giving space and respect to those who fell or got stuck in the mud. On one occasion, I watched a nearby spectator go on the track to help a kid get his bike back up and out of the way while a lineup of racers waited patiently to continue. At other events, the kid probably would have been plowed through. “It’s just for fun. We don’t want anyone taking it too seriously,” explains McCracken. Hacking shares that sentiment, adding that “if you are expecting a serious race, don’t come”. The good news is that you don’t have to wait a whole

year to attend a similar event though. Lawrence also organizes the summer version, the Grand Prix De Mud, held in June this year. You can expect everything that GPDS has, without the snow.

A young monk arrives at the monastery. He is assigned to helping the other scribes copy the old canons and laws of the church by hand. He notices, however, that the monks are all copying from other copies, not from the original manuscript. So, the new monk goes to the Abbot to question this, pointing out that if a scribe made even a small error in the first copy, it would never be picked up! Any error would be continued in all subsequent copies. The Abbot replies, “We have been copying from the copies for centuries, but you make a good point, my son.” The Abbot decides to check so descends into the dark caves deep below the monastery where the original manuscripts are held as archives in a locked vault ...which has been unopened for centuries! Hours go by and nobody sees the venerable old Abbot... Our young monk was worried so went down to find him. He finds him banging his head against the wall, wailing. “We missed the R ! We missed the R ! We missed the R !” His forehead is all bloody and bruised and he is crying uncontrollably. Our young monk asks the old Abbot, “What’s wrong, Father?” In a choking voice, the old abbot replies, “The word was...”CELEBRATE !!!” After experiencing the discomfort and embarrassment of my last Colonoscopy; I decided to have my next one done while visiting friends in San Francisco.! Where the beautiful nurses are allegedly much more gentle and accommodating. As I lay naked on my side on the table, the gorgeous nurse began my procedure. “Don’t worry, at this stage of the procedure it’s quite normal to get an erection,” the nurse told me. “I haven’t got an erection,” I replied. “No, but I have,” replied the nurse. Lesson: Don’t get a colonoscopy in San Francisco. I am seeing 5 gentlemen (give or take) every day!. As soon as I wake up, Will Power helps me get out of bed. Then I go to see John. Then Arthur Ritis shows up & stays the rest of the day. He doesn’t like to stay in one place very long so he takes me from joint to joint. After such a busy day, I’m really tired & very glad to go to bed with Earl Grey. What a life! Oh, yes, I’m also flirting with Al Zymer; Or whatever his name is. I forget ! And I’m thinking of calling JACK DANIELS, Jim Beam, or JOHNNY WALKER to come over and keep me company. Now remember: Life is like a roll of toilet paper.....the closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.So have fun, think ‘good thoughts’ only, Learn to laugh at yourself, and ‘count your blessings!!!

Instead of characteristically telling me it’s not so, he uncharacteristically comes up with a suggestion. “If you want your breasts to grow, then every day take a piece of toilet paper and rub it between them for a few seconds.” Willing to try anything, I fetch a piece of toilet paper and stand in front of the mirror, rubbing it between my breasts. “How long will this take?” I ask. “They will grow larger over a period of years,” my husband replies. I stopped. “Do you really think rubbing a piece of toilet paper between my breasts every day will make my breasts larger over the years?” Without missing a beat he says, “Worked for your ass didn’t it?” He’s still alive, and with a great deal of therapy he may even walk again, although he will probably continue to take his meals through a straw.*Stupid, stupid man.* A husband walks into a shop to purchase a sheer negligee for his wife. He is shown several possibilities that range from $250 to $500 in price -- the more sheer, the higher the price. Naturally, he opts for the most sheer item, pays the $500, and takes it home. He presents it to his wife and asks her to go upstairs, put it on, and model it for him. Upstairs the wife thinks (she’s no dummy), ‘I have an idea. It’s so sheer that it

might as well be nothing. I won’t put it on, but I’ll do the modeling naked, return it tomorrow, and keep the $500 refund for myself.’ She appears naked on the balcony and strikes a pose. The husband says, ‘Good Grief! You’d think for $500, they’d at least iron it!’ He never heard the shot. Funeral on Thursday at Noon. Closed coffin This Woman Has More Guts Than a Sausage Factory. Take a look at this film. Fabulous footage, although grainy due to time and bad equipment in those days compared to today, but what nerve this gal had. Gladys Ingles was a member of a barnstorming troupe called the 13 Black Cats in the 1920s. Ingles was a wing walker; in this film, she shows her fearlessness in classic barnstorming fashion to save an airplane that has lost one of its main wheels. Ingles is shown with a wheel being strapped to her back and then off she goes as “Up She Goes,” a duet from the era, provides the soundtrack. In the film, Ingles transfers herself from the rescue plane to the one missing the main landing gear tire. She then expertly works herself down to the undercarriage only a few feet from a spinning prop. It’s certainly a feat many mechanics I wouldn’t even try on the ground with the engine running. She died at 82…. A cowboy and his wife had just gotten married and found a nice hotel for their wedding night. The man approached the Front Desk and asked for a room.... He said, ‘This heerza special ‘casion -- our honeymoon-and we need a nice room with a good strong bed.’ The clerk winked -- ‘You want the ‘Bridal’?’ The cowboy reflected on this for a moment and then replied, ‘Nope, reckon not. Guess I’ll jist hold on to her ears til she gits used to it.’ I don’t know how they wrote this with a straight face. This was a memo sent out by a computer company (IBM) to its employees in all seriousness. It went to all field engineers regarding a computer peripheral problem. The author of this memo was quite genuine. The engineers rolled on the floor! Especially note the last couple of sentences. To whom this may concern Re: Replacement of Mouse Balls. If a mouse fails to operate or should it perform erratically, it may need a ball replacement. Mouse balls are now available as FRU (Field Replacement Units). Because of the delicate nature of this procedure, replacement of mouse balls should only be attempted by properly trained personnel. balls can be replaced using the pop off method. Domestic balls are replaced by using the twist off method.. Mouse balls are not usually static sensitive. However, excessive handling can result in sudden discharge. Upon completion of ball replacement, the mouse may be used immediately. It is recommended that each person have a pair of spare balls for maintaining optimum customer satisfaction. Any customer missing his balls should contact the local personnel in charge of removing and replacing these necessary items. There was a large tree on one of the highest points in the tract. She wanted a good view of the natural splendor of her land so she started to climb the big tree. As she neared the top she encountered a spotted owl that attacked her. In her haste to escape, the woman slid down the tree to the ground and got many splinters in her crotch. In considerable pain, she hurried to a local ER to see a doctor . She told him she was an environmentalist, a Democrat, and an anti-hunter and how she came to get all the splinters. The doctor listened to her story with great patience and then told her to go wait in the examining room and he would see if he could help her. She sat and waited three hours before the doctor reappeared. As her eyes brightened, the nuns thought it would be a good opportunity to have one last talk with their spiritual leader. “Mother,” the nuns asked earnestly, “Please give us some of your wisdom before you leave us.” She raised herself up in bed on one elbow,
