Hanne Büktas:

A Life of Pleasure in Collecting Hanne Büktas with one of her collections.

I am Umur Büktas, Hanne Büktas’s husband. This is the story of Hanne’s collection. It was 1959, I was 19 years old. I had just won a NATO scholarship and was allowed to select where I was to go to university and what I would study. I chose Munich and electronics. Two years later, in Munich, on January the 14th, 1961 destiny caught up with me! It was a Saturday evening. Friends asked me to join them going to a Fasching or carnival ball in the Haus der Kunst. As I was strolling through the corridors, I saw a beautiful, I mean really beautiful, woman coming in my direction. As I approached, I looked into her green-blue eyes with long eye

lashes, very long dark hair hanging over her shoulders and said “Fräulein wollen Sie mit mir tanzen” or “Miss, would you like to dance with me?” She answered with a smile and said “Yes!” and “My name is Hanne”. We danced the whole night and met thereafter every day of the following weeks. This encounter on January the 14th, 1961 would change my life for all times. I had met the love of my life. After some months we became engaged and moved together to a small apartment. I continued my studies and in 1964 we married. During our six years in Munich we started going on weekends to some flea markets we had discovered, like the one at Johanniskirchen or at the Auer Dult. We did not really know what we were looking for. Any object which we both found interesting and to our taste,

5

we bargained for. We had each time the feeling that we might have hit the jackpot with nobody else having seen through the value of the item.

s in 1943. Hanne Bükta

In retrospective, that is where we were bitten by the collector’s bug. Our flea market excursions continued throughout our stay in Munich. We still had not enough knowledge nor money to concentrate on a certain field of arts. But we had fun each weekend. I returned to Istanbul in April 1967 with a lovely wife and a PhD. In Istanbul our quest for

antiques became more serious. Every weekend saw us in the Kapali Carsi or “Closed Bazaar”, or in the shops at Galata, Asmali Mescit and Üsküdar to name a few. I began seriously collecting Ottoman ceramics while Hanne found interest in Orientalist watercolours, oil paintings and Beykoz glass wares. In 1970 I finished my military service in the Turkish navy as lieutenant of the reserve and joined the Istanbul division of Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands while we still continued our search for our growing collections. But as time went on, our son Timur, born in 1969, and our daughter Rana, born in 1975, were taking Hanne’s full attention and mine on weekends, so that our tours of antique markets became second priority. Then, in 1979, Philips asked us to join their headquarters in EindhovenNetherlands. Once we were there, Hanne began frequenting the Amsterdam auction houses of Christie’s and Sotheby’s. I was often on business trips world-wide while Hanne attended auctions. Once she surprised me completely with an 1805 Dutch painting, “het japon” (“The Dress”) by Steffelaar that she had succeeded in winning in a bidding competition. She was very excited as it was the most expensive art object that she had ever purchased. It was the first of many to follow and still hangs in our home. Our years in the Netherlands were focused on the search of Dutch Romantic period paintings. We enjoyed this immensely with some successes. It was at this time that Hanne made the first steps in direction of dolls and doll houses. Ten years later we moved with Philips to Vienna-Austria. This was the beginning of a period of “intense” collecting and, I will admit, each interest area of Hanne’s, within a short period of time, also became mine. She collected French Art-Déco glass, 18th/19th century Viennese porcelain, further Dutch paintings and slowly but surely, she developed a huge appetite for beautiful antique doll houses and rooms and dolls, mainly French fashion poupées. The only field of arts I collected on my own was 16th to 18th century Iznik and Kütahy ceramics. Hanne and Umur Büktas through the years.

Hanne Büktas: A Life of Pleasure in Collecting

In the mid-1990s Hanne’s collections had reached such dimensions that I decided to renovate the loft of our house. That space was then allocated to her collections. Her French poupée collection had become such a beauty in all aspects that even I stopped in front of the displays in appreciation of the elegance and taste of it all. Twice a year we traveled to London for a couple of weeks. There we found everything which gave us pleasure. Hanne completed her collections mainly there and, in the USA, where we had the luck and pleasure of meeting Florence Theriault and Stuart Holbrook whom we today call our friends. They were instrumental for Hanne to be able to complete her collections with top quality articles which I had the pleasure of bidding for. Years before, Hanne had started collecting 17th and 18th century Neapolitan and Genovese dolls which are famous in Christmas cribs. Well, also here, Hanne did it differently. As always, very creative and with her own tasteful elegance, she arranged her dolls in scenes that reflected the social interaction of people of different professions in 18th century Naples, complete with the backdrop settings in which they became alive - just as they had been displayed in Continental homes in the 1700s. Expert friends in Munich helped Hanne very much in her endeavor. This fantastic collection has become over the years Hanne’s most loved one. We did not know then that this would be her “last collection”! The love of my life, my partner 60 years long, my wife Hanne has now serious health problems and is not able to enjoy her beloved collections. She therefore asked me to bring this last collection of hers to Theriault’s to the USA, where we know it to be in the best hands of Florence and Stuart. Hanne and Umur Büktas.

The Doll As Theatre: A Preface Nearly 500 years before the Golden Age of the Italian theatre doll, the roots of that genre were born in a small gathering north of Rome. There St. Francis of Assisi invited a small group to join him in observing a vignette of the birth of Christ. His scene used live people, even live ox and ass. Over the centuries the nativity scene tradition continued. But it evolved. Live figures became statuary of marble, stone and even wood. Installations became permanent and year-round. Life-size figures became smaller…and smaller, in sizes eventually ranging only from several inches to two feet in height. Until, finally, during the 1700s Golden Age of Naples, the original simple scene became grand theatre, evolving into an entire village of people, animals, backgrounds and accessories that showcased everyday markets, elegant salons, country farm

scenes, banquet halls and such. Grapes were gathered by winemakers, men herded their animals, women tended their crying or mischievous children, vendors offered their wares, musicians played, people reveled at banquet tables, animals crowded every scene. The actual Nativity scene had been edged into a far corner of the entire tableau, taken over by the drama and excitement of everyday life. The scenes and costumes themselves underscored this change, reflective of the society, architecture and costumes of the 1700s rather than the time of the birth of Christ. The portrayal of the dolls in these scenes was highly characterized – smiling, animated, excited, worried, serene – made possible by the malleability of terra cotta which was now being used for the doll head. The material of the body changed, too, into a tow-wrapped wire armature

8

that could be positioned in infinite ways to accentuate the facial expression and dramatize the scene in which the doll was placed. Persons were now arrayed in the finest silks and velvets, festooned with rich metallic thread embroidery and beading or as more simply costumed country folk or, in fact, in whatever costume their role demanded. This was dynamic, this was character, this was Theatre! Make no mistake. It cannot be emphasized enough. The theatre of the 18th century Neapolitan doll was antithetical to the original nativity scene in both purpose and presentation. In a catalog introduction to a 2008 museum exhibition at the Kimball Museum of Fort Worth, presipio scholar Elio Catello described it as “a grand distraction for a population at play, a toy of the elite”.

How did this happen? How did a simple scene evolve into something so grand, so opulent, so extraordinary in its artistry and storytelling? It was an 18th century fusion of historical and social events, a “perfect storm” of traditional Neapolitan reverence for the arts combined with extreme wealth and the competitive desire to display that wealth. During that era, 1734-1805, known as the Golden Age of Naples, the city soared to an artistic, intellectual and cultural apex that was rivalled only by Paris. Too, marriages of Neapolitan royalty with royalty from other European countries, such as Maria Amalia of Saxony and Maria Carolina of Austria, served to bring a more continental and sophisticated air to the Naples artistic scene.

Maria Amalia, queen consort from 1738-1759 of Charles III (King Carlo), was born in Dresden of Saxony, considered the birthplace of European porcelain manufacturing, and among her contributions to the arts of Naples during King Carlo’s 25 year reign was the 1743 introduction of porcelain production, most notably in her sponsorship of the Capodimonte Porcelain Manufactory. It is believed that some of the notable artists who designed for that manufactory also created terra cotta figures for the Neapolitan scenes, some under special commission by the Palace. A history of Carlo’s reign written in 1789 by Pietro D’Onofrio noted the King’s pleasure in watching Maria Amalia sew costumes for the dolls of the scenes, and added

9

that the king was amused himself “in the idle hours of the day, with his royal hands, moulding and baking little bricks…shaping the stable, designing the background, putting the statuettes in their place”. As for Maria Carolina of Austria, queen consort from 1768-1814 of Ferdinand IV of Naples, her involvement in the creation and popularity of the dolls was more specific; it is known that she and her court ladies dressed the dolls in fashionable silks and embroideries encrusted with real jewels. In 1784 Maria Caroline established the philanthropic San Leucio colony, a village with its own unique laws and customs whose sole object was to weave silk whose use was so

prevalent in the costuming of Neapolitan figures. Too, Ferdinand and Maria Carolina had a particular fascination with the historical traditional costumes of the region. In 1782 he ordered a set of

prints illustrating these peasant costumes and there is archived literature of instructions given to the sculptor Celebrano concerning the use of these costumes on the dolls that Ferdinand commissioned from him. Ferdinand was also intrigued with the

10

burgeoning ethnographic studies of the time, especially the customs and cultures of peoples of the Eastern world, and this was reflected in the Asian, Turkish, and Moorish peoples he commissioned for his scenes. And since whatever was favored by the

royal family was also favored by the aristocracy, the trend blossomed. Of particular interest for today’s collectors of Neapolitan dolls is the desire to identify a figure by its maker. Understandably, collectors are

always curious – “who made this?” Sometimes the desire is driven by a hunger for knowledge, sometimes by a simple desire to categorize, and, sadly, sometimes by ego. This can be problematic. In a rush to assign attribution, it is most important to

11

remember certain facts. First, very few of the pieces were signed, and even if a figure was signed, the signature was generally on the inside of the terra cotta head, a location not easily attainable for today’s collector as it would require

dissembling the costume and head in the search. This is a task not recommended for the preservation of the doll!

prediction of the manner of creating the celebrated poupées offered by the luxury Paris boutiques a century late.

Also, an artist did not make the complete doll. Rather, the model might be sculpted by one person (the artist), the terra cotta cast by another, the painting achieved by a third, the carving of the wooden limbs by a fourth, and likely the creation of the utilitarian posable armature by others, and then there was the assembly. And, of course, the costume, the jewelry, the accessories…each created by skilled artisans in their own specialty. This was not unlike the concurrent production of wooden dolls in Bavaria, and a virtual

As for the artists themselves, their backgrounds varied considerably. There was Francesco Celebrano (1729-1814), a celebrated painter and sculptor with many commissions from Ferdinando IV, praised as an expert modeler at the Portici porcelain factory and Painter to the Royal Chamber. On the other far end of the spectrum, there was Lorenzo Mosca (d. 1789) whose lifelong employment was as a high-ranking government bureaucrat, who was considered a dilettante by other sculptors, but whose artistry and specialization in

12

exotica, made him in high demand by the aristocratic families seeking the best. And there was Giuseppe Sanmartino (1720-1793), who had studied under an earlier presipio modeler, Bottigliere (1684-1757), and was considered the leading 18th century Neapolitan sculptor in marble and silver, whose presipio figures were described by Molajoli in a 1950 exhibition catalog as being the best “both in penetration and creative freedom”. Sanmartino, in turn, was the tutor of Salvatore di Franco, who even at the end of the 18th century, was noted for his works of intensity and imagination.

And there was Nicola Ingaldo, Giuseppe Gori, Camillo Celebrano (the son of afore-mentioned Francesco Celebrano), Francesco Cappello, Giovan Polidoro, and Francesco Gallo, all sculptors in the late 1700s/early 1800s. One might wonder why these artists did not freely sign their names. It is important to remember that the creation of the Neapolitan presipio figures was considered playful art rather than the fine art of marble and stone for which many of them were so celebrated. The sculpting of “common folk” with all their unenchanting features such as warts and goiters, their wrinkles and their grimaces, was exclusive to the Neapolitan doll, and as Elio Catello notes in the introduction to the 2008 Kimball exhibition “allow[ed] the peasant classes to be depicted in a sympathetic light – still with all their foibles and in all their misery, but also with a sense of humor”. The sculpting of these figures by the celebrated fine artists was, thus, a pleasant aside from their more serious work, and, practically speaking, a source of ready day-to-day income. That their skills and talent spilled over into the creation of Neapolitan dolls is our benefit today but not the work for which they aimed to be more remembered. So, what can one do about assigning an artist’s name to a particular work? Research continues into the archives to

locate references to specific models. Collectors study techniques and artistry of those examples that are signed. And, then, occasionally and carefully, we “attribute”, meaning the piece bears the stylistic techniques and

13

the quality of that artist who is likely its modeler. One collector summed it perfectly, “I see it as a wonderful opportunity for study and research, and it helps hone my collecting skills to choose for quality rather than just for a label”.

sought by collectors today. There was the mid-late 1700s French wooden court doll, usually posed in the presence of other court figures, each of which was singularly carved to represent a specific person, their collective purpose to insinuate a rumored scandal of the court. There was the English wooden doll, often housed in a perfectly scaled setting designed as a replica of the family manor, replete with a bounty of related miniatures from everyday life. The Japanese Ningyo of this same era, too, were showcased to tell a story, punctuated with accessories ranging from animals to furnishings to foods; this was most tellingly evident in the elaborate arrangements created for annual celebrations.

Although today’s doll collectors tend to place the Neapolitan doll is a special sphere, apart from the general lineage of doll history, it is very important to know that these splendid dolls occupy a logical point in doll chronology. Yet despite the artistic quality of these dolls, despite their variety of facial models, despite the masterpiece quality of their costuming, the collecting of these dolls remains an outlier in most doll collecting circles today. Why is that?

representations of people, as they lend themselves to feed our imagination, as they can be posed in infinite scenes, as each face speaks differently to each observer, so they are dolls. That their clothes could not be removed and re-dressed without damage to the costume is hardly an argument, as this is generally true of most dolls created during this time period when costumes were commonly tacked or glued to the bodies.

Some argue that they are not really dolls, they are not playthings. This is folly. As dolls are miniature

Dolls from other cultures were being created concurrently with the Neapolitan dolls, and they are avidly

14

In Germany, the tradition was even more dominant, ranging from the extraordinary Mon Plaisir doll mansion of Princess August Dorothea which comprised over 400 dolls and 2670 pieces of furniture and accessories, arranged to represent everyday life in the village as well as the palace, to the carved wooden crib figures of old Bavaria and the Tyrol. “The accumulation of architectural detail is as characteristic of the Tyrol cribs as the superabundance of figures. A crib belonging to the Jaufental family… mingled dwellings of the Tyrol Alps with architecture of the Renaissance, Temples, and a hill castle. For the six scenes [which] it represented it utilized twentyfour buildings, 256 human and 154 animal figures” wrote Max Von Boehn in Dolls and Puppets, 1956.

For each of these dolls, characterization was paramount. Facial expressions were sculpted and painted to represent moods of festivity, anger, anguish, joy and every other emotion imaginable. Bodies were designed to articulate, to a greater or lesser degree, the better to enhance the expression through pose, while costuming, ranging from sumptuous silks and embroidery to simple homespun and lambswool, defined the social station of each person. Dolls were theatre! It is also interesting to view the Neapolitan doll as it preluded later doll production of the 1800s and 1900s. For example, the Neapolitan industry-wide use of terra cotta (easier to sculpt, less expensive to produce), the development of the articulated posable armature body (all the better for “play”), and, importantly, the divided labor in the actual making of the doll (the artist to sculpt the mold, the caster to pour the mold, and so on) all foretold materials and techniques of doll production in France and Germany in the next century. The sculpting of fashionable hair styles and carved hats or hair ornaments was mirrored in the 1860/1880s modeled hair dolls of Germany, many of which seem to be virtual duplicates of the earlier Neapolitan models. Too, comparison with the doll facial models of the German art character movement of the early 1900s reveals its roots in the exceptional realism of the Neapolitan dolls.

Conclusion The Golden Age of the Neapolitan doll lasted scarcely a century. The secular direction of this doll had begun in the late 1600s, gathered steam in the early 1700s and, finally, upon the prevalent use of terra cotta, which allowed a variety of facial models, and the “new” armature body which allowed posing in scenes, did the movement reach its peak. The fad fed upon itself, inspired in no little degree by the wealth of the aristocracy, the playful and extravagant atmosphere of the times, and the patronage of the royal family.

15

Then, as fads will tend to do, it ended. The heyday was over by the early 1800s, although some lesser work continued for several decades. Some important collections were kept intact, yet many other family collections began to be dispersed at that time. It was only in the late 1800s that some few art lovers re-discovered the genre, and not until the mid-to-late 1900s that serious collecting began. One of these collectors has been Hanne Büktas and her judicious preservation of these rare dolls is a gift to history and art. x

During the Golden Age of Neapolitan dolls, the Magi (or Three Wise Men) were central figures, not only representing the original nativity scene, but also the most exuberant portrait dolls inspired by the burgeoning interest in Eastern culture encouraged by King Ferdinand IV. Splendidly costumed, some on very rare occasions, such as the three shown here, astride a superbly decorated horse, and with sculpted facial expressions of the highest artistry, they perfectly exemplify the concept “the doll as theatre.
