at Theriault’s Studio in Annapolis, Maryland The Auction Begins at 11AM Eastern Both Days

“ONE THING LEADS TO ANOTHER” A CATALOGED MARQUIS AUCTION OF FINE ANTIQUE DOLLS In a recent interview, Walter Isaacson, the historian whose works have ranged from biographies of Ben Franklin to Leonardo da Vinci to Steve Jobs, was asked what characteristic is common is all geniuses. He said, without hesitation, “curiosity”. Why things work, what could be different, why is this like that, and every other question one could ask about any topic, is the mark of a genius, he said. You start here, you wonder why, you ask a question, then think of something else and off you go on a new path. One thing just leads to another.

collectors. January 2022 Marquis auction features Part II of the Luann Guleserian Collection of California, the personal portrait dolls of the child film star Diana Serra Cary (“Baby Peggy”) and an outstanding collection of French dolls from a private Netherlands collector, as well as others. There are more than 500 wonderful antique and vintage dolls to be offered, and you are invited to enjoy the auction with a live audio/video presentation for both days. If you would like to examine your favorite dolls prior to the auction, you can reserve a private video viewing. Or you can call the office to arrange an onsite viewing (mask will be required).

One thing leads to another. And a great collection is built. If this feels familiar it is because this is also the path of great collectors. You start out searching for one little thing. It sends you off on the quest for something kind-of, sort-of related. But then what about this? What about that? And off you go. Theriault’s is privileged to be the “historians” of some of these great collections as they leave their cherished homes and coax the curiosity of other

Her highly characterized features and original painted pale complexion are complemented by an extraordinary trousseau of 13 early costumes. The doll is being presented with a provenance of her original family owners and story of the costumes.

Right: At 21”, this early bébé from the prestige studio of Andre Thuillier in Paris, c. 1880, is nonpareil. So seldom does a doll combine all the sought-after attributes of incomparable beauty, great rarity, and perfect state of preservation. This doll has all that, and even wears her original signed A.T. shoes. She is from the ex-collection of the famous Lucy Morgan who, in her collecting, epitomized the phrase “one thing leads to another”.

Right: How can such tiny dolls (here shown 6”-8”) have such distinctly different facial expressions? Too, check out the footwear. These are from a large collection of all-bisque French and German miniature dolls presented at the January auction.

Left: Her name was Diana Serra Cary, but to her fans, the young child star of silent film was known as Baby Peggy. So beloved were her child roles in the late 1920s that she was re-created in doll form in both bisque and composition. Until her death in 2020 at the age of 101, several of these dolls were held in her possession, and they are offered at Theriault’s January auction.

Left: The eyes have it! Look this way, look there, the googlies are always beloved. Three sizes of Kester 221 model are offered at Theriault’s January auction as well as more than 20 other sought after googly bisque dolls from the early 1900s.

A

mong the treasures at Theriault’s January Marquis auction is a Rudolf Szalasi furnished dollhouse, believed to replicate in miniature the Herrenchiemsee castle of German King Ludwig XVI. The rococo-style grand castle, 64”w. x 22”w. x 42”h., is three stories high, centered by a wide dramatic center staircase designed for a grand entrance. Made in Germany in the 1950s, it was commissioned by the wife of Conrad Hilton, along with a nearly identical second castle that was displayed for many years in the front windows of the Hilton Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. The castle is remarkable. The grand central staircase is flanked by balconies and decorated with a series of Fragonard style paintings. Other rooms feature music rooms with harp, grand piano and violinists, two boudoirs with elaborate canopied beds, and the grand ballroom which sparkles to the lights of floor and wall candelabra (yes, they absolutely light up activated by the 12 volt transformer which is included!). Even better, the elegantly garbed couples actually dance on the inlay parquet wooden floor. When activated, each pair spin and twirl around and around, to four different musical minuets including Luigi Boccherini’s “String

10

Quintet in E, Op.11 No.5-Minuet”. The house is alive with 50 little dollhouse dolls by Erna Meyer dressed in aristocratic costumes in the late 18th century manner. The house, itself, is elaborately furnished with more than 50 pieces of Szalasi furniture, with original cream painted finish accented with gilt, many with original paper labels on the underside. The distinctive miniature furniture was designed in 1951 by the Hungarian couple Maria and Rudolf Szalasi, registered in German patent offices as DRP 851 312 with the simple description “Doll furniture”, and made in their own studios in the village of Tann in the heart of the German toy region for about three decades until the company, still operated by the Szalasi couple, closed its doors. It is believed that only four or five of the palatial estate homes, such as the one presented here, were ever made, each on special commission. This particular example is the only known with the complete third floor fitted as a grand ballroom.

“Charlotte”, the Cover Doll in the January Marquis Auction A

n outstanding English wooden doll, circa 1760, with fascinating provenance linking to Queen Charlotte (1744-1818), the Queen Consort of King George III, will come to auction at Theriault’s January 22 Marquis auction. At 28”, the doll is extraordinary not only in its provenance, but also in its originality and splendor of presence. In 1761, the young German princess Charlotte, then only 17 years of age, was married to the just-crowned British King George III, a union which lasted 57 years, amidst the turmoil of George’s bouts of severe mental illness, as well as the American declaration of independence from England and the ensuring American Revolution. During that era, Charlotte gave birth to 15 children, thus drawing to her court a number of children’s attendants and personal ladies-in-waiting. The English author Flora Fraser wrote of Charlotte’s particular kindness to her children’s attendants in her 2005 book, Princesses: The Six Daughters of George III, such as personal little notes of thank you.

daughter of the 4th Duke of Atholl, the gift of the wooden doll that is shown here. The young goddaughter, who named the doll Charlotte in honor of the Queen, remained in the court, and later became a lady-in-waiting to Queen Charlotte. As for the doll, it was carefully cherished, was passed along in her family, for several generations and eventually passing into the hands of Frances Ada Drummond (18971922), a noted British artist whose listed paintings include “A Woodland Scene in Spring” and finally Lady April Agnew Somerville who determined to pass the doll into the caring hands of collectors. Throughout these years the doll was always named “Charlotte”.

And it is also certain that her kindness extended to other members of the court. Kindness sometimes took the form of a warm smile, a personal note, or, in the case of her young goddaughter Charlotte Murray (1775-1832),

Accompanying the doll through the years, and presented with her here, is a glass-lidded box with engraving which contains a number of precious miniature objects. Of greatest interest is a small roll of silk fabric with exquisite embroidery carefully wrapped in paper labeled with the hand-script designation “piece of old Queen Charlotte’s train 1770”. There is a linen homespun double “pocket” with embroidered detail, an embroidered miniature folio with internal pockets, a small silk purse with gilt metallic embroidery, a framed engraving labeled “Charlotte, Queen of Great Britain, &c” on the

reverse, and a very fine miniature painting of an 18th century lady seated at her desk. The doll, Charlotte, itself, is a wonder. Standing a regal 28”, her dark enamel eyes proudly center a perfectly sculpted face and strong aristocratic throat. Her complexion is flawless and completely original, indicating her vigilant care for 250 years. And, oh, her costume. Of the finest embroidered silk with gathered ruffles and flounces, the gown is neatly fitted to her elegant shape. Beneath is a fine homespun petticoat with embroidered details, and on her dainty feet above shapely legs are fitted silk slippers. She carries a cobalt blue glass cornucopia for a dab of perfume, or perhaps - dare she? - a little touch of mid-day brandy. Charlotte wears a tiny ruby necklace, and on her head is an exquisitely fitted cap in woven crepe and silk ribbons accented with stiffened lace. In all – her beauty, her luxury of production, her state of originality, and her provenance - the doll Charlotte, ranks among the finest early English dolls ever presented at auction. x

Saturday and Sunday, March 12 and 13, 2022 The Important Vintage Barbie Collection of Thomas Romanotto More than 500 very rare dolls, costumes and accessories, gift sets, and ephemera including cars, planes, and boats, dollhouses, and furnishings from the collection of the late Sacramento California savant and author, including rare examples for the American market, 1959-1969, as well as costumed dolls made exclusively for the Japanese and European markets. A full color catalog is available for $59 with free shipping.

Saturday and Sunday, March 19 and 20, 2022 The Madame Alexander Collection of Judith Merrill of Dallas, Texas From 1954, the very first time that she spotted a Wendy-kins doll in a holiday display at Macy’s in New York, the young Texas girl was enchanted with the magic of Madame Alexander. Today, more than a half century later, the enchantment encompasses nearly a thousand of these rare 1950s models.

Saturday, March 26, 2022 The Betsy McCall Collection of Marci Van Ausdall The serious collector of the 8” child fashion doll authored the bible of this collecting genre, Betsy McCall, a Collector’s Guide more than 20 years ago and it has stood as the standard for the doll’s documentation. Her collection, shown in the book, is featured here. Also included in the auction are other dolls of the 1950s era including Ginny, Mary Hoyer, Tammy and more.

Come Visit The New FlorenceandGeorge.com In the early 1970s Florence and George Theriault cast off their lucrative and stable careers to open a small country auction house in rural Pennsylvania. They didn’t make more money, they made less. They didn’t work fewer hours, they worked more, but they were their own bosses. Within ten years that small auction company became an internationally renowned antique auction firm. Later Theriault’s moved to Annapolis, Maryland, and a sister company, Dollmasters, was founded by Florence and George. Where Theriault’s would offer people unparalleled antique collectibles, Dollmasters presented collectors with a mix of hand-crafted art pieces and old store stock discovered by Florence and George as they toured the world gathering antiques. Dollmasters distinguished itself as the mail-order company that didn’t simply offer every item it could find; they picked and chose the ones they would be proud to have in their own homes.

Shopping couldn’t be easier at the great new Florence and George! Better, faster, and still the name

Four decades later, Dollmasters changed its name to Florence and George to celebrate the original entrepreneurial spirit of its founders.
