1. Classic French Bisque Smiling Poupée Deposed by Leon Casimir Bru 21” (53 cm.) Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulderplate, blue glass spiral-threaded eyes in perfect almond shape, dark eyeliner, short curled lashes, arched feathered brows, mauve eyeshadow, accented nostrils, closed mouth with hint of enigmatic smile, pierced ears, brunette human hair over cork pate, French kid poupée body with square cut collarette, gusset-jointing at elbows, hips and knees, lovely antique costume including opera glasses. Condition: generally excellent, body very sturdy. Marks: J. Comments: Leon Casimir Bru, circa 1872, the year in which he deposed this very distinctive model, said to be a portrait of Empress Eugenie. Value Points: especially beautiful example of the sought-after portrait poupée with finest bisque, complexion and painting, sturdy original body. $2800/3500

Early-1800s Miniature Portrait Paintings Including Napoleon and Josephine Including 6”x 3” framed portraits of Napoleon and Josephine with outstanding detail of medals, jewelry, lace and crown, and with illegible tiny artist signature. And 3” round framed portraits of Spanish King Philippe IV and Spanish Queen Marie of Austria with wonderfully detailed ringlet curls and feathered hair ornaments, with illegible artist signatures. 3. French Maitrise Model of Marble-Top Chest of Drawers 12” (30 cm.) l. 9”h. Featuring bombe-shaped front and sides and with cabriole legs, the two drawer chest is of fine fruitwood veneers with further scrolled inlay pattern, and with grey marbled top and bronze drawer pulls and decorative mounts. Bisque socket head with very elongated facial shape, painted blue eyes accentuated by thick upper black eyeliner, grey eyeshadow, painted lashes, fringed brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, rounded nose tip, closed mouth with upturned lip corners in smiling expression, defined space between the outlined lips, brunette mohair wig, French slender wooden body with swivel waist, jointing at shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips and knees, metal hands. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Huret 66 Rue de la Boetie. (body). Comments: Prevost-Huret, circa 1915, in the illustrious lineage of Adelaide Huret, this model created during the era of the Renaissance of the French Doll. Porcelain shoulderhead with delicately-tinted complexion, painted blue down-glancing eyes with darker blue iris rims, thick black upper eyeliner, delicately-painted lashes, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth, unpierced ears, blushed cheeks, blonde mohair wig, kid body with gusset-jointing at hips, lovely antique costume. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Huret a Paris (and other illegible word, torso stamp). Comments: French, circa 1860, rare untypical body stamp, this being the mark usually found on costumes by Huret. Value Points: very beautiful face with artistic painting of eyes and blushed cheeks. $3500/5500

4” (10 cm.) x 5 ½” frames. The delicate watercolor miniature portraits depict the Honorable and Mrs. Edward Perceval in semi-profile with exquisite detail of shading and costume detail, each signed “Smart” and each in original inlay bone and rosewood frame. Ink script on the back identifying their persons. Paintings excellent, some wear on frames. John Smart (c. 1740-1811) was a noted portrait miniaturest in the late 1700s, known for his grey coloring and sense of quietude. $1200/1600

18” (46 cm.) White porcelain shoulderhead with elongated face and throat, sculpted grey hair drawn into highly-stylized coiffure, partiallysculpted ears, heavily-modeled eyelids lending a down-glancing expression, painted blue/grey eyes, aquiline nose, closed mouth, muslin stitch-jointed body, porcelain lower arms, silk gown, undergarments. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Germany, circa 1910, the doll was introduced at the 1908 Munich Art Doll Exhibition, this being a rare variation of hair color and complexion. $1100/1400

18” (46 cm.) h. 12’W. The wooden-framed toilette table has inset panels and drawer fronts with rose-patterned chintz cover, inset bevel-edge center mirror, lace and silk tassel accents and is fitted with original white porcelain wash bowl, pitcher and two dresser jars with floral design and gilt accents, with original cord ties to table top. Excellent condition. French, circa 1900. $500/800

Condition: generally excellent, fine professional restoration to right thumb. Marks: (crescent symbol) Bru Jne 0 (head) Bru Jne 0 (shoulders). Comments: Leon Casimir Bru, circa 1882, his transitional model of circle dot and classic Bru Jne that appears to have been made during a single year period and is rarely found. Value Points: the rarity of the transitional model is accentuated by the most desirable tiny size, having most beautiful face with lovely bisque and painting, original soft elongated wig, very sturdy body and wearing a fine, frail but original silk bébé dress, along with undergarments, pretty bonnet and porcelain perfume bottle on chatelaine, the bébé wears her original leather shoes (one sole replaced) signed “Bru Jne Paris 0”. Pressed bisque socket head, blue glass spiralthreaded eyes with darker blue outer rims, thick dark eyeliner, delicately-painted lashes, mauve-blushed eyeshadow, brushstroked and feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth, delicately shaded outlined lips with upturn lip corners, pierced ears, lambswool wig over cork pate, French composition and wooden eight-loose-ball-jointed body with plump limbs and straight wrists. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 7 (head) Jumeau Medaille d’Or Paris (body). Comments: Emile Jumeau, circa 1878. 15” (38 cm.) Standing at an upright wooden piano is a bisque-head bébé with blue glass paperweight inset eyes, long painted lashes and brows, closed mouth, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, paper mache hands, purple velvet dress with lace, undergarments, shoes; the piano has elaborate ormolu candlesticks, music rack and handles, silver basket with silk flowers, and faux keys. When wound, music plays, the girl turns her head side to side and moves her hands up and down “playing” the piano. Condition: generally excellent, music and movement function well. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau Bte SGDG 3 (and artist checkmarks). Comments: Vichy, circa 1890. Value Points: well-preserved parlor automaton with wonderful luxury details of piano, pretty music, charming petite size, and original presentation as a rare luxury candy box, the lid lifting for access to the surprise bon-bons. $6500/8500

Condition: generally excellent, hands repainted. Marks: K*R 101 50. Comments: Kammer and Reinhardt, circa 1910, the model marketed as “Marie” from the firm’s art character series of that year. Value Points: especially well-defined wistful expression with choice bisque and painting, wonderful antique costume. $1100/1500

Bisque socket head with very deeplyimpressed sculpted facial features, upper-glancing painted brown eyes, red and black upper eyeliner, painted curly lashes, accented eye corners and nostrils, rounded tip nose, closed mouth with full outlined lips, impressed dimples at lip corners and chin, brunette mohair wig in side-coiled braids over plaster pate, composition and wooden ball-jointed body, antique brown linen dress with handmade lace trim, blouse, undergarments, socks, shoes, lace cap. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: K made in Germany 208 14 (head) Germany (body). Comments: Kestner, circa 1910 from their art character series. Value Points: pristine original condition of the extremely rare model, notably so in this large size, enhanced by superb detail of facial modeling, flawless complexion, original wig, body and body finish, antique costume. Few examples of the size 14 model of the painted eye character 208 are known to exist. Provenance: The childhood doll of Miss Willie Pearl Davis of Douglas, Georgia, born 1905, the doll was tenderly cherished in the Davis family home until the passing of Willie Pearl in 2000, when it was acquired by a local Douglas doll collector who has preserved the doll until this date. $25,000/35,000

Oil painting on canvas depicting a brown-haired girl wearing a white dress with ruffled collar of broderie Anglaise, and with dainty feathering of curls at the top of her forehead. In original gilt wooden frame with framer’s mark, and signed in red by the artist “Daniels 1877”. Excellent condition. Anson Daniels of Medway, Massachusetts (1813-1884), the 19th century New England artist/poet, “a man of broad and generous culture” according to documents in the Medway Historical Society, was known especially for his portrait work. $3000/5000

Bisque socket head, deep blue glass paperweight inset eyes, dark encircling eyeliner, painted curly lashes, rose-blushed eyeshadow, brushstroked brows with decorative glaze, accented eye corners, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with defined space between the shaded and outlined lips, dimpled chin, pierced ears, brunette human hair over cork pate, French composition and wooden fully-jointed body, lovely antique whitewear costume. 28. Six Rare Early Miniature Wooden Dolls in Original Costumes 4” (10 cm.) Each has one-piece carved wooden head and torso, wooden limbs with cloth strip jointing, painted facial features and sculpted hair over gesso. Condition: generally excellent, some age wear to costumes. Comments: mid-19th century, the dolls were featured in a full chapter (pages 201-206) in Evelyn Ackerman’s Dolls in Miniature, with noted similarity to a set of dolls then found in the Dingley Hall dollhouse of famous Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood. Value Points: outstanding detail of individual hair styles, facial expression, and meticulous costume and accessories on the set of tiny dolls. $1200/1600

29. All-Original French Musical Automaton “Little Girl with Surprise” by Leopold Lambert 20” (51 cm.) Standing upon a velvet-covered platform is a bisque-head child with large brown glass paperweight inset eyes, lushly painted lashes and brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with shaded and accented lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau Bte SGDG 3 (head). La Czarina (paper tune label on base underside). Comments: Leopold Lambert, circa 1890. The little girl appears to hold a paper mache Easter egg (which is actually attached by hollow metal rod to her torso). When wound, she lifts her right hand to sniff the flowers she holds, then lifts the basket lid with her other hand, revealing a tiny feathered bird. All the while music plays. Value Points: all-original condition, with beautiful soft wig, couturier costume from the workshops of Lambert, and with enchanting activity and music. $7500/9500

Condition: generally excellent, Marks: A La Recompense/Nadaud Jouets 32 Rue du 4 Septembre (boutique stamp on torso). Comments: French, circa 1875, the prestige doll shop, located just next to Place de l’Opera was established in 1861, and in their 1875 advertising noted a “separate workshop for making trousseaux”. Value Points: very beautiful face with subtle blushing, superb original couturier costume with extended train, undergarments, boots, jewelry. $3000/4200
