Huguette Clark and The Beautiful Jumeau For Huguette Clark, the French doll was the grail of antique dolls, a quest that began in her earliest childhood and continued for more than 100 years. And of the French dollmakers, it was Jumeau who most captured her heart. Huguette’s attraction to beautiful dolls is understandable. From early age she had been exposed to fine art in museums, galleries and The childhood doll of Huguette Clark. even the grand halls of her family mansion in New York. The Bébé Triste Model – Her Artistic Favorite Although the Bébé Triste had long been a favorite of Huguette Clark (as early as 1980 she had acquired a beautiful example from Theriault’s, #8 of this catalog, one of 12 presented in her collection, in every size made, except 13), it was only with the 1994 publication of The Jumeau Book that she learned the name of the Bébé Triste sculptor, Carrier-Belleuse, and understood her instinctive attraction. For had she not spent her childhood in Paris, visiting the famous Opera time after time, admiring the Carrier-Belleuse torcheres at the base of the staircase? For some, this connection might seem trivial, but to Huguette Clark it was a felicitous blend of artistry and nostalgia. The Deposed Bébé Models – The Eyes Have it During the years 1883-1885 bébés with the mark “Depose Jumeau” cut into the bisque, with distinctive smaller eye cuts, as well as those incised “E. Depose J.” with dramatically large eye cuts, were made. It was for these latter dolls that Huguette Clark had a particular fondness, there being more than 20 examples from petite size 2 to splendid and rare size 14 in her collection. The Bébé “Tete” – The Gold Standard In 1886, Emile Jumeau introduced the bébé marked with the red stamp “Depose Tete Jumeau” which continued
to be made until the end of the century. Because of the 13 year period of its production, the model was made with many variations in quality, and it takes the canny eye of a wise collector to spot the rare and luxury examples. Huguette Clark had this prescient eye, seeking out those rare examples that continued to have eye shadow blush, shy-appearing smaller eye cuts, and other features of the earlier models. The eye of the artist, indeed! The Bébé Phonographe – The Lifelong Search for Missing Russian Recordings The Bébé Phonographe was first presented by Jumeau in 1893/1894 with recording mechanism by Henri Lioret, along with available recordings in French, Spanish and English… and Russian. The doll sang songs or recited poems with a limit of 35 words (amusingly, about the original length of today’s tweets!) when the cylinder placed in its torso was activated. For Huguette Clark it became a new quest – to find all of the recordings ever presented by Jumeau. In her collection is a nearly complete set (#1-15, except 12) of the French recordings, ten early recordings with hand-written labels, and eight recordings in English. But what she always sought, and never found, were the Russian recordings. Despite decades-long search in Europe and American, the closest she ever came was a Bébé

Phonographe box which listed Russian records on the lid. The Jumeau Doll in Music and Movement The French automata of Leopold Lambert, Vichy, and Roullet et Decamps offered a felicitous blend of pleasure to Huguette Clark, for not only did they showcase her life-long love of music (some even presented as musical performers!) but their presentation also featured the beautiful bisque faces made by Jumeau. Not only were these the classic “tete” model faces,

but also uniquely sculpted faces created by Jumeau under special commission such as the exotic face of the Chinese Tea Server or the vividly antic faces from the 200 series found in the Crying Child with Polichinelle and the Happy Baker. The Couturier Costumes – from Ernestine Jumeau to Dior and Patou That fashion was important to Huguette Clark should come as no surprise. She spent her life in the bustling couture centers of Paris and New York among

the “in” people to whom stylish mode was de rigeur. Which explains why, whenever possible, she sought to find her Bébés Jumeau in original costumes whose design, fabrics and construction had been overseen by Ernestine Jumeau herself. There are, in fact, more than 25 bébés by Jumeau in the Clark Collection with original Jumeau couturier costumes, a remarkable feat. That, too, is not even to mention glorious bébés in other fine antique costumes that did not originate with Jumeau, nor the Jumeau bébés in original factory flowered chemise dresses, nor the several dozen luxury automata with Jumeau faces and couturier costumes. And then, there is the exclusive bébé costumes commissioned by Huguette Clark from Christian Dior and Jean Patou during 1950s/1960s along with extensive correspondence concerning the choice of fabrics and trims. Correspondence with the house of Jean Patou included actual sketches of a proposed costume. And accompanying one of these costumes, in complementary colors, a bébé bracelet and earrings was commissioned from Cartier.

Bleuette – a Return to Roots Huguette Clark was born in Paris in 1906. Just one year before, in 1905, Bleuette, the doll, had been introduced by Gautier-Langereau of Paris as a reward to young girls for selling subscriptions to their journal, La Semaine de Suzette. While it seems hardly likely that young Huguette was put to the task of selling subscriptions, it is almost certain that Bleuette played a part in her childhood life, and became a fascination that carried over to her adult collecting years. During the 1950s she undertook the task of acquiring every issue La Semaine de Suzette from its seminal first issue in 1905 until its closure in 1960, as well as acquiring the new fashions as they were offered each year by Gautier-Langereau. Huguette’s love for dolls and their costumes pivoted back and forth throughout her life from nostalgia for simple child play costumes to intellectual pursuit of fashion design. Her collection of Bleuette dolls, their costumes, and

the journal which inspired it all, gives apt testimony to both. Conclusion A curious mind and an artistic eye led Huguette Clark to explore many genres of antique dolls, but over and over again, it was work of Emile Jumeau that most captured her appreciation. Even a brief perusal of the auction catalog, The Doll Collection of Huguette Clark, evidences that, while a study of the book helps define her fascination and the many avenues it took during her long and imaginative life. x
