INTRODUCTION

From the time of America’s founding, there has been a traditional look toward Europe as a treasure trove of great art works and antiques. From Thomas Jefferson to Andrew Carnegie, American persons of power or wealth imported wonderful art treasures to their homes in Virginia or Pittsburgh. Within the world of dolls, William Andrews Clark, the copper baron, and father of doll collector Huguette Clark, garnered the impressive collection of French art that formed the Corcoran Gallery in Washington. So it was little wonder that Huguette Clark, herself, would look to Europe for the doll treasures she so cherished. And she was not alone among doll collectors, who, to this very day, dream of the time they will make the journey and search for a doll with that special European flavor.

Yet, no need now. Because Theriault’s has brought Europe to you. Four exceptional collections, from Austria, Italy, Switzerland and Germany, appear in this one day auction, offering you the best of European dolls and toys without the trouble of traveling there. The collection includes not only fabulous bisque dolls from the finest French and German firms, but also early wooden and paper mache dolls, a delightful collection of toy wooden and mohair animals

(including, curiously, a very rare exhibition Schoenhut horse!), a collection of exceptional maitrise model doll furniture, very rare toy stoves, Christmas ephemera, and more. This is the European toy world of the 1700 and 1800s brought right to your doorstep. x
