The breath-taking one-owner Trudy Butler collection of fashionable ladies from the celebrated American firm is highlighted by a remarkable collection of Cissy dolls in original costumes. “Perhaps not every model ever made, but very close to it!” says Florence Theriault. Especially notable is the pristine preservation of the dolls with perfect coiffures, complexions and costumes. The collection also includes other Alexander fashionable dolls including Margaret, Queens, Elise and Cissette, as well as “Ballet des Fleurs”, “Judy”, and “Champs Elysees” from the very rare 1951 Portrait series.


Part One

August 1st 2020 at 9AM EST 1. Outstanding Cissy “Slyly Kissed with Rhinestones”, 1955 20” (51 cm.) Blonde hair with tightlyarranged curls at the forehead and nape. Wearing blue heavy slipper satin gown with cap sleeves, fitted bodice, wide flared skirt, which is trimmed with silver metallic braid that is “slyly kissed with rhinestones”, according to the 1955 Alexander catalog, that are a unique blue color, taffeta petticoat with stiffened tulle ruffle, taffeta panties, stockings, silver cross-strap heels, and an elaborate floral and silver braid coronet. Accessories include large rhinestone ring, rhinestone and silver bracelet, and ostrich feather. The costume is tagged. The rare doll is in mint condition, with Cissy box, flawless complexion, rare and perfectly-kept coiffure, and pristine condition of the very rare costume. 2. Splendid Very Rare “Ballet Des Fleurs” Portrait Doll from the Mystery Series of 1951 21” (53 cm.) Burgundy-brown hair waved away from her face, rolled tightly at the sides and captured in a rhinestone-accented black snood at her nape, distinctively-hand-painted facial features. Wearing white Alencon embroidered lace and satin dart-shaped tutu, tulle neckline and shoulder guards, multi-layered tulle skirt overlaid with beautiful Alencon lace and trimmed with embedded rhinestones and clusters of dainty silk flowers that are repeated as a throat band, satin panties, blush net stockings, pink ballet slippers, crown of starched lace trimmed with rhinestones and seed pearls. Near mint condition. Alexander, 1951, from the extremely rare group known as “The Mystery Series” which definitively established the dolls of Madame Alexander as mid-century fashion icons. This extremely rare model from that series is in wonderfully-preserved condition. $8000/11,000

Elongated vibrant auburn-red hair drawn away from face and captured in a rhinestone-studded snood at her upper back, distinctive hand-painted facial features, original thick eyelashes, very full color lips. Wearing tagged silver-blue silk organdy full-length gown with tiny sleeve-lets, decorated with a sprinkle of rhinestones, corsage of silk flowers at the left shoulder and cascades of flowers on the skirt, double pink taffeta petticoat and panties, silver-blue felt slippers, net stockings, pearl necklace and rhinestone teardrop earrings. Excellent condition except some spotting on the upper left skirt. Alexander, 1955, the doll is a variation of model 2100 from “A Child’s Dream Come True” series, has rare zipper closure, rare earrings only appearing on dolls of this year, and is presented in her original (worn) box labeled 2100 and with store tag from FAO Schwartz. $1800/2300

8. Cissy in Pale Yellow Gown with Elaborate Jewelry from “A Child’s Dream Come True” Series, 1955 20” (51 cm.) Auburn hair drawn away from face with luxurious cluster of curls at her nape. Wearing tagged gown of pale yellow slipper satin with fitted bodice, very full skirt and gathered caplet sleeves, soft yellow taffeta hooped petticoat, matching panties with Val lace, hose, and gold cross-strap heels, yellow tulle muff with an extravagant cluster of roses, ring, bracelet and a unique topaz and rhinestone necklace that was singularly used for this model. Near mint condition with gorgeous complexion and vibrant costume colors of which this dress is a rare color variation. Auburn wig drawn from her face into an elaborately-arranged long chignon, distinctive handpainted facial features, eye shadow, arched brows, very full lips. Wearing tagged pale pink wedding gown with a separately fitted bodice of white lace over soft pink silk under-blouse, long fitted sleeves and collar, matching overskirt that attaches to the bodice in the back (and with zipper closure) and floor-length skirt of narrowly-pleated tulle over a pink underdress. Layers of petticoats (two tulle and two soft pink taffeta), white taffeta panties trimmed in Val lace, seamed nylon hose, garter belt, white elastic and silver heels, pearls, solitaire ring, and an extraordinary coronet that entirely frames her face composed of tiny baby’s breath and rose and white petals on lace-covered headpiece, long veil. Near mint condition. Alexander, 1956, with early Alexander (unmarked) box, the very rare doll has her original paper wrist tag “Lucille Ball “Forever Darling” Bride Doll by Madame Alexander”. The earliest presentation of this doll carried this Lucille Ball reference tag, but as Madame Alexander had not licensed the doll, she was obliged to remove the tag, rendering it extremely rare to find today. $7500/9500
