ollectors refer to these as dolls from “the Golden Years”. For Judith Spencer Merrill the dolls are more personal. She still calls her dolls “The Girls” as she relates

even now how Alexander dolls “brought tears of joy to my eyes from our first meeting at Macy’s window in 1954 when I was a young girl”. It was from that time forward that Judith sought to find and preserve these dolls which, once considered modern, have passed into the realm of vintage, and now are seven decades into life. Her collection is remarkable, focusing significantly on the child doll, Wendy-Kins, but also encompassing the beloved Cissy doll, Elise, Lissy and even rare historical portrait dolls from the series known as “mystery”. More than 300 dolls are included in the auction. x

Included is the original 5” painted eye hard plastic doll by Irwin Plastic Co., wearing original baby outfit created for the doll by Alexander. Both dolls have beautiful complexion and costume, her unique and original hat not seen with any other Madame Alexander doll. $800/1000

Including Romeo with red caracul wig and Juliet with tosca hair gathered into an elaborate arrangement of curls at her crown and with cascading curls onto her back torso, each with straight-leg walking-style body. Romeo is wearing purple knit body suit under black felt jacket with pagoda sleeves, trimmed with gilt metallic braid and medallion, purple cap with pink feather, gilt boots; and Juliet is wearing ivory satin brocade floor-length gown with magenta velvet yoke and matching longsleeved coat, panties, gold tie shoes, and elaborate coronet. Each costume is tagged Alexander-Kins. Near mint condition, Alexander, 1955. 8” (20 cm.) Brunette hair with short curls, real lashes, bendable-knee walking-style body with unique posing of arms and fingers to accentuate the costume role, wearing ivory robe with rhinestone and pearl studded design on front, matching rose satin lined cape with lace and rhinestone edged collar, and silver bead and rhinestone cross at the back cape with two rose stone accents at the cross top, taffeta full slip, panties, white socks, side-snap suede-like shoes, along with elaborate crown heavily encrusted with pearls, rubies, and rhinestones, and a matching orb to be held in the doll’s specially formed open palm. Also included is a second gown in somewhat simpler style along with matching crown, and a third ensemble with gown and cape. Near mint condition except some of the boa is a bit fly-away on the third costume. Alexander, 1957, the doll and crown frames were commissioned from the Alexander firm, then fitted with specially shaped arms and hands, reportedly by I. Donnelly, a religious supply company of Kansas City, and, finally, costumed by the Sisters of Mercy in Omaha, Nebraska. Few examples of this doll are known to exist. $6000/8000
