11. Early French Mechanical Gliding Lady in Original Costume by Vichy et Fils 11” (28 cm.) Standing upon a tinplate base with three spoked wheels is a lady with paper mache swivel head, black enamel eyes, painted lashes and brows, open mouth, two upper and two lower square cut teeth, blonde mohair wig with elaborate original coiffure, paper mache body with modeled bosom and waist, bisque hands. Condition: generally excellent, very light craquelure on forehead. Marks: Vichy a Paris. Comments: Vichy, Paris, circa 1850. Value Points: when wound, the elegant lady glides forward and circles while turning her head and lifting arms alternately; especially beautiful coiffure and original costume. $3500/5500

12. Very Fine French Sewing Necessaire in the Shape of a Spinet Piano 12” (30 cm.) l. 6”h. In the shape of a spinet piano, with decorative inlay finish in checkerboard pattern and inlay design of keys. The lid of the piano hinges open to reveal mirror on the interior lid, and a wellfitted velvet-lined base containing number of elaborate silver and pearl accessories including needlecase, scissors, awl, knife, thimble and thread winders. Very good/excellent condition, one small crack at base of mirror. French, mid-1800s. $1100/1500

13. Extremely Rare German Bisque Doll as “The Work-Table Companion” 8 ½” (22 cm.) excluding base. Bisque shoulder head of adult lady with oval face, pale bisque, blonde sculpted

hair captured in a green painted snood with purple lustre tassel and white feather trim, painted bright blue eyes, eyeliner, closed mouth, muslin body, bisque lower limbs with painted black boots. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Germany, circa 1870. Value Points: the rare and dainty lady with fancily-sculpted hair is wearing her original costume, and was presented in The Englishwoman’s Magazine of that time as an exclusive design named “The Work-Table Companion”, the costume decorated with a pin-cushion coiffe, pockets with packets of needles, silk reticule enclosing a thimble, and sash pocket with scissors. A flat-back intricately-woven basket with decorative ribbons is filled with a plethora of miniature dolls and toys including all-bisque mignonettes, wooden tuck comb dolls, bisque monkey Marquis, tinplate penny toys, lamb, and more. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: for the French holiday market, circa 1890 , as presented in Parisian holiday Etrennes catalogs; the basket, known as “hotte” was a miniature version of a traditional peddler’s back-pack basket of the 19th century. The wooden vitrine cabinet with bowed-front and sides has double-door cabinets at the base, and glass-windows above with mirrored back and glass shelves; the cabinet has fine painted finish with decorative painted scenes of birds and flowers framed by scrolled garlands, and is accented by bronzed gilt mounts and drawer pulls.

In the foreground is a table piled with prizes alongside a large Polichinelle into which two older children are tossing balls into its open mouth, while two younger children anxiously stand by. Helen Webster Jensen, born in Chicago in 1896 studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, and in 1928 moved to Santa Monica, California with her husband where the two pursued a career in portrait bust sculpting; many of their commissioned works exist in the Los Angeles area and she is cited in Edan Hughes book, Artists in California, 1786-1940. She died in Seattle in 1990, and it is likely that Gladdie was the only doll model she sculpted, said to be a portrait of her own daughter. Each has pressed facial features with exaggerated shape and painting designed to enhance the caricature they are portraying, padded wire armature body in pose to further enhance the caricature, and elaborately-detailed costume and accessories, three with original paper label. Excellent condition. Included are bellhop which precariously balancing birdcage, luggage and golf clubs, folies lady with baton and top hat, Marquis with elaborate costume and hat, Scottish man with kilt and bagpipes, artist with palette, ballerina tying on her slippers. Felt swivel head with pressed and painted facial features, blue upper glancing eyes, painted lashes, dark eye shadow, closed mouth with accent dots on bottom lip, black mohair wig with coiled chignon at the back, jointing at the shoulders and hips. 319. Collection of Eight Cloth Caricature Dolls by Roldan 8” (20 cm.) - 10’. Each has pressed cloth face with exaggerated features depicting the sense of the character, with oil-painted features that further enhance that character, mohair wigs, felt body with wire armature that is posed in exaggerated manners, and each with original costume and whimsical accessories, with original Roldan paper labels. Excellent condition with rich vibrant colors perfectly retained. Included are woman with wooden baby cart and two babies; woman walking in a windstorm with coat blown up; woman at the beach, lad with pig and chick, peddler with goods, girl with roller skates having her arm in a sling, man with nightcap, candlestick and his dog, and a judge with gavel. The Roldan caricature dolls were made in Spain in the mid-1900s, and imported to the US by Rosenfeld Imports. $1000/1500
