Of heavy tin with painted aqua and cream finish, having gilt edging and painted gilt garlands with blue flowers, double-spoked wheels, metal undercarriage and handle, wooden hand grip, original wire-framed silk shade which can open and close, lace blanket, and pillow. Condition: generally excellent, some frailty to original sunshade. Comments: Maerklin, Germany, circa 1890. 8. French Glass Dome with Porcelain Vase of Silk Flowers 21" (53 cm.) The tall glass dome resting on original wooden ebony base conserves a petite porcelain vase with profusely painted decorations and contains a wonderful arrangement of colorful silk flowers of many varieties. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1885, the talents of French artisans created these splendid silk flowers, their color choices, petal shapes, and accents providing apt substitutes for real flowers during cold winter months. 15. French Black-Complexioned Minstrel Playing Banjo by Vichy 31" (79 cm.) Standing in a jaunty yet sophisticated manner upon a velvet-covered flat base with gilt ball feet is a blackcomplexioned paper mache man with highly characterized features, brown glass eyes, black sculpted brows, broad nose, very full lips with hidden hinge at lower lip, row of teeth, black fleecy hair, slender carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, and paper mache hands posed to hold the banjo. When 15 detail wound, he moves his head in a complicated manner, his lower lip moves, and he strums the banjo, while musical tunes play. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Vichy, circa 1890. Value Points: rare Vichy automaton, with especially fine detail of facial sculpting and having original finish, original antique silk costume. $9000/13,000

16. Fine All-Original French Automaton "The Monkey Marquis' Evening in the Garden" by Phalibois 27" (69 cm.) Arranged upon a wooden ebony platform is an arched garland trellis in which a paper mache glass-eyed monkey, costumed as an aristocratic Marquis gentleman, is seated at a velvet-covered iron table with fringe trim, holding a goblet in one hand and a cigarette in the other; the entire vignette is under a glass dome. When wound, and strings pulled, the Marquis alternately sips from his goblet and smokes his cigar, while his lips move as though speaking and head turns from side to side and around, while two musical tunes play. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Jean Phalibois, France, circa 1875, the depiction of the French aristocrats as costumed monkeys was a popular theme allowing a gentle mocking of the habits of that upper society. There are ten movements and two tunes. Value Points: superb luxury automaton is in wonderfully preserved condition, with exceptional silk costuming, and most delightful contrast of satirizing set against elegant ambiance. $8000/12,000 16 details

The paper mache box, shaped as a French recamier with gracefully shaped sides and upholstered seat, has superb engraved paper cover with colorful designs including blue red-winged cranes centering a garland-framed lyre at each head-rest; a hidden pull-out drawer at the base was originally used as a container for luxury candies. Excellent condition. French, circa 1850, rare early candy box. $600/900

20. Outstanding Southern German Carved Wooden Gentleman in Original Linen and Silk Costume 34" (86 cm.) All-carved wooden doll with one-piece head and torso, strong jawline and well-defined nose, well-defined eye sockets with painted brown eyes accented by brown upper eyeliner, single-stroke brows, stern expression on the closed mouth, pointy chin with painted moustache, gluedon curly hair, cloth-padded torso, doweljointed shoulders, elbows, hips, knees and ankles, carved oversized hands. The paper mache reclining poodle has brown faux fur cover, amber glass eyes, nose, tongue, long fluffy tail and having a removable head for access to the candy container interior. Included are 30 plates for various servings, eight soup bowls, two covered tureens, gravy boat, footed compote,

Comments: Aristide Halopeau, circa 1884, the successor to the prestigious Barrois firm created bébés from about 1877 to 1890 in very limited numbers; the heads were commissioned from Frayon of Montreuil, the painting of faces is known to be by Barnard, a wellknown artist. Value Points: few models of the Halopeau bébé exist, this example with spectacular eyes enhancing the captivating expression, original body, and body finish. Standing upon a velvet-covered base is a bisquehead doll with brown glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted dark lashes, brush-stroked and feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with defined space between the outlined lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, and bisque forearms. When wound, she turns her head from side to side and daintily fans herself while two tunes play. Condition: generally excellent, left arm can be adjusted to lift floral bouquet. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau Bte SGDG 4 (head) Coppelia [and] Vienna Moussaka (handwritten paper label on base). 30. Outstanding French Musical Singing Bird by Bontems in Octagonal Bronze Gilt Cage with Porcelain Panels 20" (51 cm.) An octagon-shaped bronze bird cage with very rich gold finish has eight arches held by ribbed columns and surmounted by sculpted bronze winged birds; the cage rests upon a bronze base with eight intricately framed porcelain hand-painted panels by Sevres, each depicting a romantic pastoral scene in the 18th century manner. 31. French Sevres Porcelain Jardiniere with Two Singing Birds and a Butterfly by Bontems 19" (48 cm.) The gold-rimmed Sevres porcelain jardiniere, which is exquisitely hand-painted with branches of flowers and two colorful winged birds, is resting upon an ebony wooden base with tiny claw feet, and is filled with a luxurious arrangement of colorful silk flowers, berries, and leaves. Perched atop the arrangement is a feathered blue bird, while a smaller bird perches below, and a butterfly is hidden in the leaves. When wound, the smaller bird begins to chirp while alternately fluttering its side wings and then tail feathers, and moving side to side. The larger bird remains silent, but the smaller bird persists, and eventually the larger bird begins to respond, at first with a delicate chirp, then a light flutter of tail feathers, then eventually chirping and turning its head side to side. 32. Very Rare French Automaton "Vive La France" for 1889 Paris International Exposition 24" (61 cm.) A petite 14" bisque-headed doll with brown glass paperweight eyes, beautifully painted features, closed mouth, blonde mohair wig, slender carton torso and legs, metal upper arms, bisque forearms, silk and lace costume including slippers and cap, is balanced on one foot, posed upon a blue paper mache globe, her other foot posed freely as though merrily dancing, and her arms waving a French flag and silk ribbons in the French national colors. The paper mache globe is decorated with blue velvet stars and is attached to a blue velvet-covered base with gilt metallic and blue cord trim. When wound, music plays, and she appears to dance and then re-balance on the globe which tips back and forth (see photo of hidden groove). Meanwhile her torso leans side to side, her head alternately leaning and her right arm waves the ribbons. Condition: generally excellent, faint hairline at side right neck rim (under lace collarette), mechanism and music function well. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau 1 (head). An original wooden frame with patinated and gold leaf accents surrounds a set-back lithographed scene with various cut-out persons, animals and accessories set dimensionally and connected to wires which give them animation when wound at the side: the blacksmith cobbles the horse, a little boy tosses a stick for his dog to fetch, a man sharpens a knife, chickens peck for food, in all a series of 14 different movements. In the background are mountains, a lake and various buildings including the town hall with a working porcelainfaced clock and second dial with sounding wake alarm. There are separate keys for clock winding and mechanical movements, and a pull-string activates the beautiful music. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1870. 96. Outstanding Example of the Rare French “Monkey Conjurer� by Phalibois 28" (71 cm.) Arranged upon an ebony wooden base, under oval glass dome, is a paper mache headed monkey standing behind a wooden table, the entire scene framed by a garden arbor decorated with fabric leaves and flowers. The monkey has brown glass movable eyes, hinged lower jaw, double row of teeth, mohair wig, beard and moustache, carton torso, carved wooden hands, and is costumed as a mystical Conjuror in elaborate silks and velvets with gold ormolu paper edging and conical shaped crown, lorgnette at his right eye. The table is decorated with velvet drapes edged with metallic fringe and upon the table are arranged various objects including playing cards and two silver cups that the monkey clasps. When wound, and lever released, intricate movements occur: the monkey turns his head to one side, nods, then to the other side and nods again, and, in synchronic movements with the nods, he lifts the silver cups to reveal different possibilities including green, orange or white balls, die, little boxes, and such. Sometimes both cups are lifted simultaneously, sometimes in sequence. Throughout, he blinks his eyes and opens and closes his mouth as though calling for wagers. Two musical tunes occur from a separate pull-


string and lever. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: (original French language paper tune label on base). Comments: Henri Phalibois, circa 1880, the “Monkey Conjuror” appears to have been a popular theme with Phalibois for a number of years despite its somewhat complicated mechanism, and was offered to both English and French markets; one known example is documented as having been the centerpiece of an Austin, Texas, gambling saloon at the time. Value Points: exceptionally fine state of preservation with wellfunctioning music and motions, superb presentation of background, costumes, and accessories. $18,000/25,000

97. Extremely Rare French Mechanical “Alligator” by Roullet & Decamps in Exhibition Size 34" (86 cm.) Of very sturdy paper mache with painted finish to realistically depict an alligator hide, the figure has hinged jaw, ferociously sculpted row of teeth, bulging glass eyes, sculpted ribs and hide, and sculpted claws. A mechanism within the alligator creates a series of realistic movements: when wound, the alligator moves forward in a complicated slithering manner allowed by the linen-wrapped jointing at the neck and mid-torso and by multiple jointing of the tail, while the jaw opens and closes in a synchronized bulging movement of the eyes. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism functions well. Comments: Roullet & Decamps, circa 1895, the firm created a number of mechanical animals ranging from gentle kittens to squirrels in cozy scenes to more exotic animals such as lizards, and this present example, the alligator. Value Points: perfectly preserved mechanical animal was likely presented as an exhibition model, judging by its size and extreme rarity. $8000/13,000

98. German Bisque Miniature Novelties in Original Sample Box by Hertwig 14" (36 cm.) x 11”. The cardboard box is fitted with 29 miniature all-bisque novelty figures including men on horseback at the hunt, dogs, and a series of leprechauns with amusing hats and accessories, along with a bisque mushroom house. Each is affixed to the original sample box, and identified on the underside with a paper label with original factory inventory number. The sample box was displayed in the showrooms and at toy fairs by the firm of Hertwig, showing the many products available from their firm, and is very rare to find still intact. 135. Wonderful French Musical Automaton with Imaginative Scenes and Movements 21" (53 cm.) h. 20” w. Constructed upon an ebony wooden oval base is a dimensional scene of a fort with guard tower, viaduct with walkway, windmill, 135 detail house, water wheel, ground, and a turbulent ocean upon which is a large sailing vessel. The scene is constructed of heavy stock and has hand-painted architectural details to further enhance the dimensional effect. When pull strings are activated a series of activities occur: soldiers on horseback ride across the viaduct bridge, the ship casts to and fro as the water moves choppily, the water wheel turns, the windmill turns, water appears to flow at the base of the viaduct, and a lone guard patrols around and around the watch tower. A glass dome has a hand-painted scene enhancing the effect, and when removed reveals a paper tune label listing “2 airs”, namely “Madame Angot, Choeur des Conspirators” and “Les Cloches de Corneille”. The first song, from the popular comic-operetta first performed in 1872, was set just after the French Revolution, which the scene appears to represent. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, 1870s. Value Points: very fine original state of preservation with entrancing theme, many simultaneous movements, and beautiful music. $5500/7500

267. Very Rare Early Cloth Mickey Mouse from Charlotte Clark Design and Likely Her Production 19" (48 cm.) including ears. Of cotton fabric with linen-like cream face fabric, black head, nose tip and body, felt eyes and ears, flat-stitched cotton tail, black embroidered mouth and eye accents, loose whiskers, ivory sateen four-digit gloves, sewn-on brown corduroy shoes with stiff-bottom feet covered in the same linen as the face, wearing red cotton shorts with four large pearl buttons. Condition: near mint. Comments: Charlotte Clark, the American seamstress, designed and created the Mickey Mouse doll under approval by Walt Disney, originally only made for his gift-giving and soon thereafter, sold through exclusive Los Angeles area stores; eventually a pattern was created by McCall’s. This particular example is indubitably the Charlotte Clark design and likely her own studio production, early 1930s. The square-shaped radio with ochre finish is designed to appear as the cottage of the seven dwarfs; a dimensional colorful scene of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs highlights the front of the radio, four standing aside her, two peeking from the window (which also serves as the speaker) and one hiding behind the window shutter. The name “Emerson” is impressed on the window frame, as are

273. Very Rare American “Snow White and Seven Dwarfs” Radio by Emerson 11" (28 cm.) l. x 8”h. x 5 ½”d. The wood frame radio has a dimensional scene on the front featuring Snow White seated with four of the dwarfs at her feet in front of the cottage, two other dwarfs peeking out from the window (which is actually the speaker) and the final dwarf half-hidden behind the window shutter; the radio dial appears in the archway of the cottage door, and the radio is dialed by acorn-shaped wooden knobs. Emerson is impressed into the stairs leading to the door. The radio, model DB247, was made in 1939 by Emerson, under license from Disney, and is in near mint condition, functioning well. $1100/1600
