The large one-piece bisque figurine depicts a little girl with brown tousled hair, down-glancing eyes, smiling expression, bead-trimmed smock, standing upon a grassy mound, alongside her large St. Bernard dog and tabby cat with collar and bell, with two little tabby kittens held in her apron. 4. German All-Bisque Black Character with Trunk of Puppies 5” (13 cm.) The seated black-complexioned bisque child has sculpted short black fleecy hair, brown intaglio side-glancing eyes, sculpted romper suit, impressed with Heubach sunburst mark and having blue Heubach stamp. Along with a bisque trunk from which are protruding the heads of three different dog breeds, lettered “Tom, Dick and Henry”. Excellent condition. Germany, circa 1910. $400/600

A bisque box with removable lid appears as a one-piece figurine when unopened, with woven wicker designs on the sides and top, and with four bisque baby heads peeking from beneath the lids, each with eager playful character expression and sculpted hair, one with sculpted baby bonnet. 14. German All-Bisque “Baby in Papa’s Shoe” by Gebruder Heubach 8” (20 cm.) One-piece bisque figurine depicts a young baby who has climbed inside papa’s shoe which has a worn hole in the toe front from which the baby’s toes are protruding in a curled manner, and having loose side flaps with drilled holes for shoelaces; the baby has curly blonde sculpted hair and loose smock. Marked with Heubach sunburst mark. Excellent condition. Germany, Gebruder Heubach, circa 1910. $700/900

15. Very Rare and Gorgeous French Bisque Bébé “H” by Aristide Halopeau 19” (48 cm.) Pressed bisque socket head with very full elongated cheeks, amberbrown glass paperweight inset eyes, thick dark eyeliner, painted curly lashes, roseblushed eye shadow, brush-stroked and feathered brows, accent dots at eye corners, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with defined space between the very full lips that are enhanced with shading and outlining, pierced ears, auburn mohair wig over cork pate, French composition and wooden eight-loose-ball-jointed body with straight wrists. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 3 H. Comments: Aristide Halopeau, circa 1880, the successor to the legendary Barrois doll firm. A unique bébé model was commissioned by Halopeau, and created for him at the Frayon porcelain firm, with painted complexion and facial details by the noted Parisian artist, Barnard; only one model was ever offered by the firm and few examples were created. Value Points: gorgeous dreamy eyed bébé with very full sensuous lips enhanced by exquisite painting, original body and body finish, lovely costume includes antique coat with matching dress, undergarments, leather ankle boots, and very fine antique bonnet. $28,000/35,000

16. English Hepplewhite Mahogany and Fruitwood RollFront Desk 25” (64 cm.) The maitrise model desk features a roll front that opens to reveal a myriad of little file and pencil drawers decorated with fruitwood inlays (the two upper drawers having shortened back walls to allow a secret hiding place behind). The upper section features a locked cabinet, possibly for liquor storage (key included), and three additional storage sections, and the desk base has three drawers, all with dovetailed construction. The desk is accented with carved bone knobs. Excellent condition. English, Hepplewhite period, late 18th century. $1100/1500

Each is porcelain bust of child with head inclined slightly downward, and having very elaborately sculpted and painted cap and bodice, includes applique Dresden-like flowers and feathers, ribbon streamers, ruffles and richly painted details of floral designed caps. 25. Outstanding French Mechanical Automaton “La Victoire Finale” by Henri Phalibois 42” (107 cm.) h. overall. 32”x 21” base. 28”h. lady. A wooden base with original tapestry carpet cover displays an elegant fashionable lady standing alongside a wooden-framed display board. The lady has paper mache head, glass eyes with leather eyelids, closed mouth with row of tiny painted teeth, pierced ears, brunette mohair upswept hair, carton body with shapely torso and slender limbs, and is wearing her original black satin dress with rhinestone collar, and chapeau. Held in her extended hand is a gold coin. The frame, which 25 label.

is decorated with gilded mounts, has a curved front sign which solicits the donation of a gold coin to support French troops during WWI (every coin is another step toward victory), and a glass-fronted sign at the back exclaiming (translated) “No Defeat!” and enhanced by hidden blinking lights which give animation to the scene. The automaton is activated by an electric motor with pulley to the large wooden drive wheel. When switched on, a number of movements occur. The lady has 8 animations: head turning, nodding, eyelids blinking, left forearm sideto-side, right arm both lifting and then gesturing upward, upper torso bending at waist and leaning forward, chest breathing action, and entire figure rotation 90% to look at sign, and then returning. Meanwhile, the front sign is synchronized to the woman’s movements, so as she turns, the sign flips to reveal the back side, and she leaps backward as though stunned. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism functions well. Marks: Henri Phalibois (calling card fragment attached to underside of dress). Comments: Phalibois, Paris, circa 1915. Value Points: exceptional number of realistic and complicated movements enhance the poignant message of the early 20th-century automaton. $15,000/20,000

Posed upon an oval porcelain base with gilt edging are a woman and man in stylized manner, each with flowing brown sculpted hair in long curls, painted costume, elaborate gilt accents, 26 mark. bare feet, centered by a pedestal upon which is standing a little cherub with gilt bugle. A porcelain figure of standing woman, posed as though dancing exotically, has arms upraised, with grey sculpted bobbed hair having goldbeaded headband, three strands of gold beads, and a draped rose skirt with wrapped tassel, bare feet. 43. Outstanding French Musical Automaton Conjuror by Leopold Lambert 29” (74 cm.) h. overall. 22” magician. An ebony-complexioned paper mache man is standing upon a velvet covered wooden platform, behind a wooden table; the man has brown glass eyes, leather eyelids, highly defined cheek and temple bones, white mohair sideburns, moustache and goatee, hinged jaw, two rows of teeth, carton torso and legs, paper mache hands with expressively posed fingers, and is wearing original silk costume with velvet vest, tucked formal shirt, black tie, black pressed flannel hat and various fob and cuff links. The table is covered in green wool flannel with metallic trim and with embroidered conjuror symbols. His hands are resting upon two silver cones which hide a compartment with revolving action that allows different “surprises” to appear, When wound, the Magician turns his head left and right, and then nods downward as though drawing attention of passers-by to the table, his jaw opens and closes rapidly as though he is calling to passers-by and his eyelids blink up and down. One of two musical tunes play, and then the cones are slowly lifted, one by one or together, revealing one of five possible treasures: flowers, coins, gilded butterfly, a little bisque doll, dice...or nothing. Condition: generally excellent, music and mechanism function well. Marks: L.B. (key). Comments: the automaton, named “Escamoteur” (conjuror) appeared in an early Lambert catalog, French, circa 1880. Value Points: superb state of preservation of the rare automaton with six movements plus six possible surprises. $21,000/32,000
