Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulder plate, cobalt blue glass enamel inset eyes, dark eyeliner, feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with center accent line, ears pierced into head, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, very firmly stuffed poupée body with shapely waist, gusset jointing at hips, kid over wooden upper arms, bisque arms from above the elbows, sculpted fingers and thumb. Condition: generally excellent, body especially sturdy and fresh. Comments: French, circa 1865. Value Points: superbly preserved poupée with lovely bisque, rare bisque arms and hands, and wearing fine original costume of white pique, undergarments, leather-heeled shoes in the Huret manner, and turquoise necklace and watch with fob. $3000/4000

7. Very Rare French Bisque Double-Faced Poupée by Leon Casimir Bru, Depose Model 15" (38 cm.) The solid domed bisque swivel head with flat-cut neck socket on bisque shoulder plate has two sculpted facial models, one on either side of the head, the faces 7 detail. depicting alternate moods of happiness and despair, each with painted facial features; one face with sculpted frown lines, squinting eyes and closed mouth modeled as though open and crying, and with painted details including tiny beaded teeth and "frowning" brows; the other face with a beaming smile, sculpted laughter crinkles around the eyes, impressed dimples, painted graceful brows and tiny beaded teeth. The head pivots easily side-to-side and the wig pivots horizontally from an axis at the level of the ear to alternately reveal either face while the wig hides the other face. With original deposed Bru kid poupée body with square-cut collarette, gusset jointing, shapely torso, and wooden arms with dowel articulation at shoulders, elbows and wrists, separately sculpted fingers, wearing fine antique gown, undergarments, leather boots, and double strand of early pearls. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Leon Casimir Bru, the earliest version of his 1867 depose for "Poupée Surprise"; the patent illustration is shown in The Bru Book by Theimer/Theriault, and was made for one or two years only. Value Points: very rare 8.

Two are of fine petit point with exquisite handwork of delicate floral scenes, and the third of woven tapestry with romantic courting scene on one side, and a castle scene on the other, each with fine quality well-preserved frames. Bisque lady with oval face and elongated throat is posed with outstretched arms, her head tilted and gazing at the bird she holds, sculpted and painted downcast brown eyes, aquiline nose, closed mouth, brunette mohair wig with original net snood. Condition: generally excellent, costume is attached and has not been examined beneath. Comments: Germany, circa 1910, attributed to Galluba and Hoffman. Value Points: all-original elegantly costumed and coiffed lady with rich details depicting Medieval lady. $800/1200

Comments: Kammer and Reinhardt, circa 1912, the model was marketed as "Mein Susser Liebling", the transitional model that combined the aesthetic qualities of the art character dolls with the idealistic dolly-face model. 281. French Automaton "Elderly Lady Drinking Tea" Attributed to Vichy 24" (61 cm.) Seated upon a high-back wooden chair is a paper-mache elderly woman with incised wrinkles, brown glass eyes, leather eyelids, sculpted brows, hinged jaw, row of porcelain teeth, grey hair, wire spectacles, carton torso and legs in seated pose, wire upper arms, papermache hands, holding a tea cup and saucer in her hands. When wound, she lifts the tea cup to her mouth as though about to drink, and her eye lids open and close while jaw hinges open. Condition: the mechanism functions slowly, fine professional restoration to the face. Comments: French, attributed to Vichy, circa 1890. Value Points: well-sculpted face lends charm to the realistic everyday activity. $5000/7500

293. Vintage American Doll by Edwina Fallis with Extremely Rare and Important Documentation 27" (69 cm.) overall. 6" head. Composition sculpted head with textured complexion, grey sculpted hair, painted blue eyes with black upper eyeliner, thick brows, closed mouth, strong chin line, cloth body and wearing black taffeta dress. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: made by Edwina Fallis, proprietor of the Fallis Toy Shop of Denver, Colorado in the early 1900s. Edwina created her own dolls in a material similar to the Munich Art Doll, and especially emphasized "dolls representing the beloved characters of children's literature" according to a scrapbook issued by her. In this scrapbook are 25 vintage studio photos of dolls that could be custom-ordered from the artist. The scrapbook is included with the doll, along with a book "When Denver and I Were Young" by Edwina Fallis, and with a wooden artist palette with three model heads from the artist illustrating the production of the dolls. $2000/3000 Shown are 3 of the 25 tipped-in photographs in the scrapbook.
