“The Empress and the Child” The Empress was Eugenie and the Child was Eugenia Josephine Huwe. Empress Eugenie reigned over France from 1853-1871 and for many, she symbolized all that was elegant, sealing the recognition of Paris as the world center of fashion. Her dominance even extended to the world of dolls, with many of the models presented at the 1867 Paris International Exposition inspired by her “look”, and the 1872 deposed smiling poupée by Leon Casimir Bru believed to be an actual portrait of Eugenie. So it is little wonder that French families honored the Empress by naming their child after her. One of these children was Eugenia Josephine Huwer who was born in Luneville, France in 1883. Three years later, Eugenia, along with her parents, her sister, and her doll, a bisque bébé A.T. by Thuillier which is shown on the cover of this catalog, immigrated to the United States, where her father’s old world skills as a glass blower put him in demand in American glass firms. Eugenia grew up to become an embroiderer, married, had one daughter Vivian to whom she gave her doll, and in which family it 2

has remained until this time. The auction and the catalog are dedicated to The Empress and The Child.

The cover doll is a French bisque Bébé A.T. by Thuillier, its condition as flawless as its beauty, still further enhanced by its provenance. An able companion is a wonderful “Bébé Triste by Jumeau, also being sold with its original family provenance, including photographs of the child owner with the doll, having descended in the family of Robert Louis Stevenson, and still wearing its original Marquis costume. As for the Empress, she is present in two splendid variations, one a rare 21” model with Bru depose wooden body.

The auction features the complete private collection of Gail Nichols of Clarence New York with special emphasis on French bébés and a fabulous group of their look-alike cousins from Sonneberg. Also highly featured are early Steiff animals and character dolls from the Helen Welsh collection, a one-owner private collection of mignonettes, and a stunning array of fine French automata. x 3

26. Grand and Extremely Rare French Paper Mache Automaton “Bob and His Learned Piglet” by Vichy 50” (127 cm.) overall. 13” Piglet. Seated upon the top rung of a ladder-back chair is a paper mache clown with painted clown features and original wig, with glass eyes and hinged jaw, carton torso, legs and hands. The chair is arranged atop a platform stage and the clown balances a ladder on his left leg upon which is balanced, at the very top, a paper mache piglet dressed in fancy clothes, the piglet with hinged ears and a very pleased expression on his painted features. When wound, a very complicated series of movements occur in various synchronized movements: the clown blinks his eyes and opens and closes his mouth, his shoulders move back and forth and then heave, his arms move from side to side as though preparing to catch the pig, and his foot now and again taps in time to the actions. Meanwhile the piglet performs his “learned tricks”: he stands upside-down, at first balancing on two feet, then on one foot, then swivels to be directly in front of the clown, occasionally wiggling his ears in delight and kicking his hind legs back and forth in the air, while periodically the ladder tilts dangerously to and fro. Meanwhile, four tunes play. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function perfectly and for extended time. 66. Important and Unique French Child Artist Mannequin with Renoir Provenance 42 (107 cm.) One-piece paper mache head, torso and legs, with hand-pressed details of facial modeling, the head posed turned slightly to the side and upward tilted, with unusual very deep eye sculpting lending a dimensional effect that is enhanced by dark shaded painting, grey eye shadow, brown eyeliner and shaded brows, accented nostrils of small rounded nose, closed mouth with solemn expression, wooden upper arms designed for articulation at the shoulders and elbows, paper mache lower arms with fingers posed for holding articles, the right

leg with cast iron hinging mechanism in the knee to allow articulation, the right leg with hole in sole for placement on display floor dowel, with painted blue stockings and black one-strap shoes. The figure is wearing brown woolen coat with wide handmade cotton lace collar and cuffs, grey silk dress with lace bodice, undergarments, a lavishly feathered cap, and carries a wooden-handled black parasol. Provenance: It is generally acknowledged that the Impressionist artist, Pierre Auguste Renoir, used child mannequins as models in his studio, finding that live child models were simply too restless. The mannequin presented here is believed to be the actual model that appears as the young child with hoop in his painting, The Umbrellas, based upon the exceptional quality of sculpting (especially of the eyes) indicating its unique creation under specific directions, and upon its uncanny facial resemblance to the child in the painting. In addition, although its costume is identical to the child in

46

the Umbrellas painting, it is also believed that the same mannequin, with different costuming, was used by Renoir in the paintings Two Sisters and Girl with a Watering Can. Equally compelling is the oral information concerning the background of the piece. It was acquired directly from Renoir in his later years by Bernard Davis, a Russian-born American who had parlayed his textile-made fortune into a collection of modern French art and who served as patron to many of those artists, in particular befriending Renoir. Later, in 1959 Davis opened his Museum of Modern Art in Miami, featuring the mannequin therein. After his death, the contents of his museum were sold and the mannequin acquired by a private collector in whose family’s hands it has remained until this time. During the past 30 years the mannequin has been featured in special exhibitions of Impressionist art at the Kimball Museum in Texas and the Chrysler Museum in Virginia, among others (documents relating to these exhibits are included). $20,000/30,000
